A surprising way families are coping with pandemic stress ecause of the pandemic, everyone’s lives have been turned upside down. This is especially true for families coping with altered routines at school, learning from home or both. Children are stressed about their routines, and parents are anxious, too.

Emily Hanley, mother of 6-yearold Cameron, said this year became increasingly challenging for her family. “Bedtimes got later, meals were refused, and every little choice became a battle. We all put up a strong front for those first six months, until getting back into a school routine threw us off,” she said.

The Committee for Children, a global nonprofit leader in social-emotional learning, spent more than three years studying this concept, and then teamed up with Sproutel, a play-focused design studio, to bring their research to life.

“When kids respond to stress with emotional outbursts, it can be hard on the whole family,” said Kate Gallo, product manager for Committee for Children’s Innovation Lab. “Purrble isn’t

High-tech sensors allow Purrble to respond to touch and fidgeting, so when kids pet their companion, Purrble’s vibrational heartbeat slows into a gentle purr.

“As kids explore the toy, they learn to care for Purrble, interpreting the purrs, heartbeats and reactions,” said Aaron Horowitz, co-founder and CEO of Sproutel. “The discovery process helps kids to not only develop these self-calming skills but to take charge of how they learn.”

According to research, when taught at a young age, these coping and social skills can lead to better

long-term emotional, social and academic outcomes into adulthood, not to mention the benefits of in-themoment self-soothing.

In a preliminary study conducted with families earlier this year, parents found that when their child was heading for a meltdown or just having a bad day, Purrble could help transform tantrums into moments of calm. In fact, of the 73% of these parents who reported their child was experiencing challenges with emotions, concentration and behavior during the pandemic, 91% of these said the toy played a role in improving these struggles.

“With the coronavirus, being home is extra challenging for everybody,” said mom Stephanie Blanchard, whose family participated in the trial. “It’s hard for kids to understand what’s going on. When my 6-year-old, Sophie, was stressed or having a tantrum, I would say, ‘Hey, go get Purrble. Can you calm Purrble down?’”

A companion for all ages From parents and children to 20-somethings and grandparents, people of all ages are discovering the calming effect – grandparents who ordered one for their grandchild and ended up loving Purrble so much they ordered another for themselves, young adults grappling with anxiety and even teachers using Purrble as a classroom management tool.

COVID-19 may be having a positive impact on household dynamics

urns out a lot of us actually like certain changes we’ve made in our lives while holed up at home since the coronavirus hit.

No, we’re not talking about what turned out to be the not so stopgap measures experts usually cite in arguing the entire world has been forever transformed due to COVD-19.

Telemedicine. Telemeetings. Fist bumps – well, okay, maybe not fist bumps, but (sadly) “handshakes may be one of the last things to come back,” the Boston Globe reported.

Instead, a new survey of U.S. adults aged 18 and over provides rare insight into what could be the pandemic’s long-term impact on individual household dynamics.

Think about it – 53% of those surveyed report spending an extra 7.4 hours, on average, at home each day, which works out to be the equivalent of two additional days per week. And what have we been doing with that extra time?

We’ve been cooking together more (14%, allowing us to infer that nearly 36 million people are spending more time making meals).

We’ve been sharing more chores (12%, meaning more than 15 million households – and, yes, that includes the 66% of that figure who cited doing the laundry).

We’ve been exercising or learning Spending more time at home, in the company of loved ones, is one of the benefits of the limitations from the coronavirus pandemic. From home-cooked meals to learning new skills, many say they are enjoying a less hectic lifestyle.

new skills together (22%), adopting new hobbies like cooking, drawing or painting (16%), and – if you’re looking for something truly uplifting – generally getting to feel closer to family and friends.

“When the world feels chaotic, we often look for shelter and comfort in our homes as somewhere we can control,” said Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute and New York Times bestselling author. “That’s never been truer than now.”

The survey was commissioned by home appliance manufacturer Whirlpool Corporation, which also launched a new “Improving Life At Home” online hub replete with expert advice on everything from recipes to organizing garages, in an effort to better understand how lives have changed in the last year.

“It’s been heartening to see some silver linings as new dynamics and habits emerge in homes everywhere,” said Eleanor Reece, the company’s senior director of global campaigns, in noting that 28% of those polled want to stick with the positive changes they’ve made.

Wiking, himself, is optimistic that many people’s new-found “understanding that happiness is homemade” is here to stay – even if some hobbies don’t last.

And the guy the New York Times has called “probably the world’s happiest man” has a few tips to help get us through the rest of this ordeal: • Carve out “me time” by disconnecting.

What “me time” with mandated remote home learning for school kids, you ask? “There is evidence,” Wiking said, “suggesting that kids crave more attention if you’re sitting with a digital device, like

a mobile phone, than with something like a book or paper or a puzzle. So go old school.”

• Use a “retirement box” for decluttering. Clutter can negatively impact your satisfaction with your home. Find out if you really, really need that collection of Russian nesting dolls, say, by putting it in a box, and – if you haven’t opened it within a certain time – you’ve got your answer.

• Keep learning and growing. “Most people overestimate what they can do in a day, and underestimate what they can do in a month,” said Wiking. “The important thing is to keep moving forward and not put too much pressure on yourself.”

Different ways children can give back Children can learn about the importance of giving back at an early age. Youngsters who become accustomed to volunteering and supporting charities may be more inclined to continue doing so as they get older Parents magazine reports that the number of parents with young children who are volunteering and getting involved has increased in recent years. As family schedules continue to be busy, charitable work done as a family unit can be an ideal way to spend time together and engage in activities for the greater good.

Kids can get involved in many different charitable efforts. Quite often children are forward thinkers and innovators and may have their own unique ideas in regard to volunteering or charitable work, but the following are some ways kids can get involved in giving back.

DONATE FOOD Children can easily gather food to donate to a food pantry in the area. Set aside a bag to donate and pick one item for the donation bin each time the family visits the supermarket. When the bag is full, deliver it to an organization in need. Children also may work with their schools to have a collection box on campus and encourage other families to donate.

GET MOVING Participate in a “walk” or “run.” Walks or runs for a cause are popular events in which participants solicit pledges tied to their performances. While these are traditionally group efforts, COVID-19 may change the way future walks are organized. Participants may be able to do a walk or run on their own and still raise funds for local charities.

BE A BUDDY Children can be paired up with a senior at a nursing home, a child at a children’s hospital or even a kid who is new to the neighborhood and hasn’t yet made school

CLEAN IT UP Get involved in a cleanup campaign. Picking up litter from parks, beaches, streets, and even around school grounds can be a great foray into volunteer work. Go beyond just removing trash. Organize a planting event or remove brush and weeds as well.

COLLECT FUNDS Children can learn the joy of charitable giving by starting small. Keep a change collection jar at home and toss change from shopping excursions or coins they may find while out and about in the community. When the jar is filled, cash in the coins and donate to a charity of your child’s choosing.

Bath time can be fun for young children and their parents. Many children love playing in the water, while their parents enjoy hearing their kids laugh and play with their rubber ducks and other bath toys.

It’s easy to focus on fun at bath time, but it’s important that safety remain the utmost priority when bathing children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents take the following steps to keep bath time as safe as possible.

MAKE THE BATHROOM INACCESSIBLE Children who love playing in the bathtub may try to access the bathroom even when it’s not bath time. The AAP notes that the simplest way to avoid bathroom injuries is to make the room inaccessible so curious kids cannot get in the room when parents aren’t keeping an eye on them.

REMAIN IN THE BATHROOM AT ALL TIMES Bath seats and bathing aids can be effective, but they won’t prevent drowning.

Children can drown in a few inches of water, so parents must remain in the bathroom at all times while kids are in the tub

USE A NO-SLIP STRIP IN THE TUB A no-slip strip or a non-slip bath mat can ensure kids don’t slip and fall while in the tub. That’s especially important as children reach the toddler stage and older, when many youngsters tend to stand up and move around in the tub.

CONTROL WATER TEMPERATURE The AAP advises parents to adjust their water heaters so the hottest temperature at the faucet is no more than 120 F. Test the water temperature using your wrist or elbow. Water for youngsters’ baths should be warm, but not hot.

UNPLUG AND STORE ALL ELECTRIC APPLIANCES It may be convenient for adults to keep hair dryers, razors and other electric appliances in the bathroom, but doing so is dangerous.

Unplug all electric appliances and store them in a locked cabinet when not they are not in use. The AAP notes that using electric appliances in rooms where there is no water is preferable to using them in the bathroom.

Keep the focus on fun during family baking sessions Baking is a beloved tradition in many families. Though family baking sessions tend to be especially popular during the holiday season, there’s nothing stopping families from breaking out the flour and having some fun in the kitchen at any time of year. Baking is a great way to spend a stormy afternoon.

Fun is the focus when families bake together, and the following are some ways to make such sessions enjoyable for everyone

Encourage input

The designated family baker may have a host of go-to recipes up his or her sleeve, and baking such specialties might

be a necessity on birthdays or during the holiday season. But all baking sessions need not be beholden to family favorites.

Encourage all family members to recommend recipes prior to family baking sessions, even allowing a different person to choose the recipe each time. This can make the whole family enthusiastic about baking together and may even help families discover some new foods.

Remember that patience is a virtue

Family baking sessions require patience, especially when young children are involved.

Kids’ attention spans may wane or they may grow upset if they spill some ingredients. Remain patient at such times and let kids know making a mess is part of the fun of baking together.

Simplify sessions as necessary

Baking with toddlers and schoolaged youngsters is going to be different than doing so alongside preteens and adolescents.

In addition, consider kids’ maturity levels when planning family baking sessions, as some youngsters might be more than capable of following more challenging recipes. Making sure kids are given age-appropriate tasks or jobs

on par with their maturity levels is a great way to keep sessions fun and prevent frustration.

Share the baking bounty

Let everyone indulge a little during the baking session. If you plan on making cookies, don’t hesitate to let everyone snack on a few chocolate chips while preparing the cookies. And once the bounty is done baking and it’s ready to eat, share it with family, friends and neighbors.

Kids will be proud of their creations and want to share them, and that will ensure they’re excited about the next family baking session.

What parents can do about cyberbullying amid the current crisis

Screen time is on the rise for kids and teens as a result of remote learning and social distancing measures. At the same time, cyberbullying and hate speech are reaching new heights amid the current crisis, according to analysts.

A recent new study conducted by L1ght recorded a 70 percent uptick in hate among children and teens during online chats since December 2019. While this is worrying, there are steps parents can take to help protect kids from the surge of online toxicity they may be encountering:

Pay attention

There are many common red flags that a child is either involved in cyberbullying or a victim of it. Those who are instigating or participating in cyberbullying may exhibit increased secrecy around their mobile device or laptop, display arrogance or have other behavioral problems.

Signs your child is a target of cyberbullies include depression and anxiety, (particularly while or after using their device), problems with sleeping, changes in appetite, self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

While the “new normal” has caused a dangerous uptick in toxic online behaviors, parents have new tools at their disposal to help protect kids.

Communicate

Open a line of dialogue with your child about what they are experiencing, but be patient. Your child may be reticent to share everything going on with you at first. It can be helpful to draw in the assistance of another adult role model or even a professional therapist.

If your child is the one doing the bullying, work on identifying their motivations, so you can better address the root of the issue, and of course, continue to serve as a positive role model when it comes to expressing empathy and kindness toward others.

Keep kids active

When remote class time is not in session, it’s important to place an emphasis on spending quality time offline.

Encourage kids to be physically active outdoors in order to raise levels of mood-boosting hormones and

promote better sleep at night (something that may be suffering more these days as a result of additional blue light from screens). If possible, arrange for socially distanced meet-ups with close friends, such as bike rides.

Get kids involved in positive hobbies like reading, playing an instrument or art.

Manage screen time

As parents know, actually managing screen time can be tricky. Kids are not always upfront about what they are doing online and there are many hours a day where it’s

simply impossible to monitor your child.

Fun activities to enjoy this spring With its increased sunshine and warmer temperatures, spring is a beloved time of year. Check the surrounding small towns Take a road trip to an out-of-theway hamlet. Spend the entire day there shopping, dining and supporting a small town community.

Downtown Lake Geneva offers beach access, shopping and a walking trail to entertain the family. Or travel to the East Troy Village Square to enjoy the local coffee shop, independent bookstore, brewery, restaurants and the East Troy Electric Railroad. Burlington and Elkhorn both have lively downtown areas as well.

Enjoy al fresco dining While outdoor dining during the pandemic may have been done as a necessity, do not forget how it also can be a relaxing way to enjoy a meal. Find a restaurant with a particularly scenic backdrop and dine outdoors.

Visit a thrift shop or flea market Spring cleaning can serve as the catalyst

for people to put items on sale. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.

Spring can be a great time to shop for antiques as well.
