Weekly connection

A boy and his motorcycle

It was one of those days that is etched in a boy’s mind forever. There we were, six excited brothers, ages nine to 16, encircling a small trailer staring with our mouths wide open at the gift of a lifetime.

One of my favorite uncles, out of the goodness of his heart, had decided to bring a little excitement into the lives of his nephews, and so he bought and delivered a small motorcycle for us to buzz around the farm on. Now this was long before the times of ATV’s that can go almost anywhere and are part of the everyday life of farmers.

We were elated that day as each of my older brothers took their turn driving down our mile-long driveway and back, carefully clutching and shifting our brand new little Sears 50 CC cycle. Being the youngest of the brothers, I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to be included in this adventure, and so I asked my Dad if I could have a turn.

He said I could and I could hardly wait. Finally, all my

older brothers had finished their turns and with great fear and apprehension they watched me climb aboard. I felt like the king of the world as I throttled and released shifting gears from first to second, then to third and finally into fourth gear.

All the way to end of our drive, I motored without a hitch, being careful to keep my eyes on the wheel path and away from the loose gravel in the center of the roadway.

It was amazing as I drove along feeling like I had finally arrived in this world.

As I sped along at about 15 mph heading back down the drive, the most dreadful thing happened. I can remember it like it was yesterday. It happened when I took my

eyes off of the wheel-path, and instead noticed the mound of loose gravel in the center of the road.

I can still see it happening in slow motion. My front wheel drifted over nudging that mound of gravel in the center of the road. In a moment, all at once, my world was turned upside down. You see that loose gravel caught ahold of the front tire, and when I tried to correct the situation the little cycle began to weave and rock sending me straight into the ditch.

There I was down lying in the ditch bleeding from chin to foot. I scrambled to my feet and rushed over to the bike, which was lying there upside down, the engine roaring as the throttle was stuck wide open. I managed to flip the kill switch, and the engine died.

There I was all scraped up, but the worst thing of all was knowing that I was going to have to push that bike the rest of the way down

(Continued from page 3) clutch handle, the dented gas tank, and the bent foot pegs. I learned a great lesson that day. I learned that I should always keep my eyes up and look ahead of me as I drive.

Remember the story of Jesus walking on the water toward the boat to rescue his disciples who had been

caught in a storm? He called to Peter to climb out of the boat and walk to Him on the waves. Peter was feeling great as he hopped over the side of the boat and into the raging sea. “I’m coming, Lord” he called as he placed his eyes on the Savior, but a few moments later he took his eyes off Jesus and

began to notice the wind and waves howling around him.

He became terrified of his situation and as he was sinking, he cried out to the Lord to save him. Jesus reached forward and as He lifted the sinking Peter up, He said, “Oh you of little faith.” Isn’t that just like us? We take our eyes off the

Lord, and the “loose gravel” sucks us in.

Hebrews 12:2 tells us to keep our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of

God. It’s a good reminder that when life gets tough, we need to keep our eyes on the Savior, my friends. He is our strength and sure hope for eternal life if we by faith receive Him into our hearts and lives.
