The opposite of busy

I know a lot of busy people. They use calendars to remind them of their appointment and commitments. They pull out their phone to see if they have 15 minutes of free time anytime in the upcoming week, or maybe month. They talk about the business of busyness because it’s important stuff. It’s whonot.andlife;esteemprestige,it.becausesometimes.all-encompassing,OftentimesthereisnoescapingIt’sthepriceofsuccess,happiness,self-andfulfillmentinbusyleadstoallthesemore.It’sallgood.OrmaybeTakeitfromsomeoneusedtothinkshewas

one of the busiest of the busy - and damn proud of it, thank you very much. I know, because I’ve been there. I was there - for eons. A very, very, very busy person.Iused to color code my calendar with highlighter markers - one color for each kid and one for my husband and me. I think maybe even the dog and cat had their own highlighter colors, but I’m not sure. I was too busy to commit that to memory. Some days - most days - looked like a rainbow because of all the activities, meetings, commitments and veterinary appointments. And I’ll be honest: That calendar stood as a source of Ipride.wasdrinking the Kool Aid without paying attention to calories, sugar content or artificial colors and ingredients. I was buying into that brand of cool without even glancing at the label. I thought busy was cool. And it was, in a sense, but not in the way I thought at the time. My brightly colored rainbow calendar pages were cool because they illustrated happenings in the lives of the people (and perhaps animals) I loved. They showed my priorities were defined by family. Love and family is cool. Busy, perhaps, may not be.My comfortable, busy, recently vacuumed carpet got yanked out from under me less than two years ago when a major life circumstance marched in and forcibly grabbed busy from my anxious grasp. I was left holding nothing, standing in nothingness and unable to move anywhere beyond that. In that moment, I discovered the opposite of busy. I discovered the nothingness of freedom. The value of unencumbered time. The beauty of a day without commitments. It redefined my life. And it made me realize I have a choice. That we all have a choice. Busy is a choice.Itisalso an illusion. We tell ourselves we are busy, because It somehow serves our psyche. I’m not sure how, exactly. I think perhaps “busy” serves different purposes for different people. It can alleviate loneliness; it might hide insecurity; it can give value to time spent working at a job, parenting kids or helping aging parents. Again, that is okay. Busy worked for me for many years. But right now, honestly, busy is too complicated for my life. I don’t have the time to be busy. And all I ask is for your understanding and nonjudgement. I don’t judge you for being busy; please don’t judge me for the opposite.Idon’t have the drive to be busy right now. I don’t have it in my heart. I just want to be. Be calm. Be at peace. Be in the here and now. Be me.nAnd you can be you, as busy as you wish. Just realize it isn’t for everyone. At least not anymore. Camping in the rain at Yellowstone

See CAMPING, Page 5

We had a wonderful time doing some camping with our big family this weekend over at Yellowstone Lake State Park near Argyle, Wis. About 30 years ago we bought an old pop-up camper that we took all over the place when our kids were young.Weloved that old camper and used it until the roof finally caved in. Before the roof caved, it started leaking through the ceiling and the walls began to crumble as well. Finally, we had to shut her down. It was a sad day when I put a $50 for sale sign on it and parked it in the driveway. In about an hour someone stopped, gave me a 50, and drove it away. A few days later I saw it in town. The new owners had transformed it into a trailer to haul their lawn mower around in. A few months after we said goodbye to our camper, a wonderful teacher and pastor friend gave us a couple old tents that he was no longer using since his kids were all grown up. So, we were back in business, and we started to use tents instead of the camper. One of those old tents fell apart some years later, and I threw it away and we were down to one. It was well used but continued to get the job done a couple times a summer. So, this weekend I got it out once again to see if it had any life left. It didn’t. In fact, it bit the dust Friday night or should I say bit the mud. Here’s how it went down. It took some work, but the grandkids and I convinced my wife to abandon her plan to drive home after our campfire supper and sleep in our soft Instead, bed.she decided to stay the night with me in our old tent at the campsite so we could be there in the morning as everyone was waking up. After all the good nights were said, and it was very dark, we crawled into our tent for a good night’s sleep or so we hoped. By this time, the rest of the group, our grandkids, and their parents, had all settled into their own campers and tents for a pleasant night’s sleep as well. There had been a few sprinkles throughout the evening, but we were hoping that the rain was done for the night. About two hours later we awoke to the flashes of lightening and rumbles of thunder in the night as a steady rain began to fall. Soon we began to feel drops of water splashing on our faces and the sound of it sloshing around inside the tent. Gazette, Herald Tempo

Flipping on the flashlight we saw several small rivers of water flowing through the tent. Sure enough, like its owners, that tent wasn’t as young at it used to be. So, we bailed, no pun intended, ran to the car, and headed down the road to our own soft bed for the night. We got home, washed the mud off our hands and feet, brushed our teeth and hopped in bed. The next morning, fully rested, we headed back to camp just as the grandkids were getting ready to begin their day at the lake. We had a great time for the next few hours splashing in the lake, doing some hiking and eating a good lunch over the campfire.Eventhough we had a little weather to deal with, it turned out to be a great time together making wonderful memories.Wedecided that there won’t be any more memories to make in that old tent, however, and we chucked it in the dumpster. I’m not so sure a couple of 60-year-olds should be sleeping on the hard ground in a tent anyway. In 2 Corinthians 4:7 the Apostle Paul tells us that our bodies are like clay jars that are slowly crumbling, but when we know Christ as our Savior and Lord, they are filled with a wonderful treasure that continues to grow richer and richer as we walk with Jesus. That treasure is life through the power of the Holy Spirit who helps us every moment of the day andHenight.isour joy and our strength that brings us this treasure. Someday these old bodies will be cast aside like that old tent of ours, but if we know Christ our souls will go to live with Him in paradise. If you have never received this treasure by believing in Jesus, do it today while there’s still time.Until next week, God bless.
