In my opinion

Back in the day when I gave a lot of JOY talks and workshops (I still do some), people started called me the Joy Fairy. I loved it.

Still do. (Some now call me the Book Fairy too.) I was constantly gifted with joy mementos and trinkets and cards, in person and in my PO Box. As much as that was indeed joy and my gratitude overflowed, I told folks to instead send to someone in their world who could use a pick me up.

That is what I am asking you to do today. Snail mail someone a card or a note, just to say “Hey, I was thinking about you!” This simple act of kindness does a world of good. And we are a world that always welcomes more good.

It can be a simple joy kind of

Random Acts of Kindness Day is every single day thing or it can be specific to that particular someone. Know a friend who digs sunflowers? Print out a picture of a field of flowers from your computer and sign it. Sending happy thoughts has exponential power.

Use your imagination. I had a friend cut something off a cereal box and she sent it with a sticky note. It made me smile. It made my day. (Thanks, Mary, for the fun snail mail!)

You don’t have to be a creative genius. If your friend loves Adam Levine, print a picture and sign it: Singing for you! Do whatever feels fun for you.

special someone. A stamp is fifty cents. If you do not buy yourself one cup of coffee this week, you can have the moolah for the stamp, the envelope, the card, whatever.

The return on the investment is priceless. The ripple effect of kindness is real and scientifically proven.

You can also throw a little surprise kindness to strangers. My hubby and I were out and about

this weekend and everywhere we went, people of all ages and origins, were holding doors open and smiling and saying “Have a good day.” We did.

Don’t wait for Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17, a long way off). Make every day random acts of kindness day, make it a way of life.

When you are feeling up, pay for the coffee for the person behind you in line. AND when you are feeling low, pay for the coffee for the person behind you in line.

Studies show that doing a kindness is a huge mood booster. So if YOU need a pick-me-up, do a nice little deed for another.

There is something lovely about doing kindnesses for

strangers. They may not be able to reciprocate directly to you, but they will be compelled to do a nice gesture for another and that strengthens the collective goodwill toward mankind vibe.

Kindness is always in season.

We can plant more and more and more. We can watch it blossom and grow. We can reap the harvest and share the spoils. We can plant more seeds. And on and on and on.

One thing leads to another. One joy leads to another. Do one small this week and see what happens.

were Mary, but it was Sylvia, so it wasn’t overly remarkable.

Point is, she didn’t want others seeing her as a grandma. Maybe she felt she was too young for that, or maybe she didn’t want anyone to know she was old enough to have a grandchild. It matters not. She was Sylvia to them.

My own mom wasn’t grandma, but not by choice. She would have been perfectly happy being grandma, but on the day I was bringing my first baby home from the hospital, my mom fell and broke her hip.

Her recovery was gradual and for years she had trouble walking.

We explained to our toddler daughter that grandma had an “owie on her hip” – and from then on she was no longer grandma, but “owie on the hip.” The name was adopted by each of our subsequent kids and for the rest of her days my mom gladly answered to the name “owie on the hip” or sometimes just “owie.”

Grandmas are called different names in different countries. A babushka in Russia is akin to a mormor in the Scandinavian countries. In Spain and Mexico she goes by abuela; in Japan o

baachan; in France grand-mere; in Germany oma. All are good, but I’ve no need to be bilingual in my grandmotherly status.

Here in the U.S. a few different ones are common. In addition to grandma, you’ve got granny, gran and nana. If you wanted to go the formal route you could opt for grandmother. One I found clever and sweet was a woman whose husband, as grandpa, was called simply “pop.” She asked to be called “lolly” and together they made a lollypop. If that doesn’t make you go “Awww” I’m not sure what will.

As for me, I’ll come when called, no matter what she calls me. But, I have decided on a preference – if it works out. I sort of like grammy, for a silly and simple reason: it sounds like an award and I’ve always wanted to win an award.

And my new little granddaughter is the best award this grammy could ever get.

Recipe courtesy of The National Honey Board Servings: 8 2 tablespoons honey 3 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 lime, juiced 1 pound chicken breast strips, skinless and boneless bamboo skewers In small bowl, whisk honey, soy sauce, olive oil and lime juice until completely blended. Pour mixture into re-sealable freezer bag and add chicken strips. Seal bag and gently shake to cover chicken strips. Allow to marinate 2 hours.

Heat grill to medium-high heat.

Soak bamboo skewers in water 15 minutes. Remove chicken strips from marinade and skewer onto bamboo sticks. Grill 8 minutes, or until juices are clear and chicken is fully cooked.

Java London Broil

Recipe courtesy of Devin Alexander from “You Can Have It!,” copyright American Diabetes Association Servings: 6 2 teaspoons freshly ground coffee 1/2 tablespoon Truvia Brown Sugar Blend 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1 London broil (1 1/2 pounds, preferably grass fed) 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil Heat grill to high.

In small bowl, add coffee, brown sugar blend, black pepper, coriander, oregano and salt; mix well.

Place London broil on cutting board or large plate. Drizzle 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil on each side of meat then rub all over. Sprinkle seasoning mixture over roast and rub in to evenly cover meat.

Grill London broil to desired doneness, about 3-5 minutes per side for medium rare. Tent meat with foil for 5 minutes then slice into thin slices, cutting at an angle against the grain.

Grilled Sticky Ribs

Recipe courtesy of Nestlé Prep time: 20 minutes Total time: 3 hours, 35 minutes Servings: 5-6 2 racks (about 4 pounds) baby back ribs garlic salt ground black pepper 1/2 cup water 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1/4 cup finely chopped red onion 1 teaspoon finely chopped garlic 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger 3/4 cup sweet chili sauce 1/2 cup Apple Nestlé Juicy Juice 100% Juice 1 tablespoon rice wine (mirin) Heat oven to 300 F. Using knife, remove membrane from bone side of ribs. Pat ribs dry with paper towel; season both sides liberally with garlic salt and pepper. Place ribs in large roasting pan, overlapping as needed. Add water to pan. Cover tightly with aluminum foil.

Bake about 3 hours, or until meat is tender but not quite falling off bones.

In small saucepan over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add onion; cook, stirring occasionally, 2-3 minutes, or until soft. Stir in garlic and ginger; cook 1 minute. Stir in sweet chili sauce, apple juice and rice wine. Reduce heat to low; cook 8 minutes, or until sauce is reduced to about 1 cup.

Heat grill to medium heat.

Brush glaze over tops of ribs. Grill 4-5 minutes, or until sauce caramelizes. Serve with remaining glaze.
