Doug was born in Beloit, Wisconsin. After high school graduation, he went to Michigan State University. While there he received a draft notice for the U.S. Army. He opted to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He served four years in the South Pacific. Doug is one of the few remaining World War II veterans.

Back to civilian life, his shipmates met periodically for reunions. These reunions were held at locations all over the United States. At one reunion, they were invited to visit the White House. Doug spent his working years at Warner Electric Brake and Clutch Company (as it was called then). He married Doris May Knapp in 1947. A son, Dennis, was born to them. They will celebrate 75 years of marriage this year on September 7th.

A trip to the Wisconsin State Fair

One of our favorite things to do in August whenever we can make it happen is to get over to the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis. We have some great memories of the fair over the years. In the past, we have tried to get there on a day when there was going to be a good Christian band performing a concert that night. This year however, we weren’t able to see a big concert, but we did take in the group called The Kids from Wisconsin. They put on a pretty amazing show themselves.

The group consisted of about 20 singers and a dozen or so band members who played, sang and danced for more than an hour and a half in over 90-degree heat. Their smiles

and enthusiasm were infectious as they jumped around the stage singing a variety of very peppy songs from all different genres of music. Throughout the performance they managed to change outfits several times as well. It was most impressive.

Before the show we grabbed a little lunch because fair food is always the best. I had a barbeque beef rib sandwich, which was exceptional, and

my wife had a pretty good slice of pepperoni pizza. After the show we made our way over to the cream puff shed. The Wisconsin State Fair is known for its cream puffs, and they certainly didn’t disappoint.

After our creampuff break it was off to see the sea lion show where we saw two of the smartest animals on earth perform an assortment of tricks and stunts. They clapped their flappers, did head stands, rolled over, snagged these big hoops over their heads, balanced a basketball on their noses, caught and threw frisbees to the crowd, jumped way up out of the water and touched a ball that was hanging from a string, and at the end of each little

event, climbed back up on their stand and waited for a treat and the next trick. They were great!

When that show was over, we made our way down to the animal barns where we watched these gargantuan workhorses being judged.

There were Clydesdales a plenty being led around the ring with their massive frames and powerful muscles bulging. I couldn’t get over how a small man or woman could control those beasts with just a little rope hooked on a bit in the horse’s mouth. Later we walked through the barns and were just amazed at their size once again.

Even their feet were monstrous.

As the sun began to set, we took one last look at some of

the new gadgets that we had seen earlier in the exhibition building. They always have the newest juicing machines, knives and potato peelers along with a bunch of other contraptions like massage guns and vibrating chairs to relax tired muscles. Of course, there were all kinds of candies, nuts, baked potatoes, and even corn on the cob stands to indulge the appetite as well. As we left, we stopped by a kettle corn stand by the exit and grabbed a bag for the road. All in all, it was a very good day. We were back home before 11 o’clock, which was a plus as well.

As I was thinking about those huge horses being led around by a bit and rope, I

remembered the scripture about how our tongues are like a bit in our mouths as well. The tongue has a great deal of power.

James 3:3-5 says, “Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look at ships: although they are so large and are driven by the fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.”

So be careful about the words that come out of your mouth. They can have a powerful effect in a positive or negative way on those around us.

Next, consider money. We may pinch pennies during the regular, average week, but during vacation, money flows more freely. We’re more likely to eat out, to spend money on beaches, theme parks and tropical destinations.

We purchase T-shirts, coffee mugs and other souvenirs that we don’t really need and won’t ever really use because we are on vacation and buying a memory feels right, somehow, in the

Consider your vacation schedule. It’s created with one thing in mind: fun, happiness, pleasure, entertainment, laughter, joy, new experiences, respite, relaxation and possibly a little excess. It’s set up for you to do whatever you want, whenever you want.

If you planned for the beach, but wake up feeling the vibe of a theme park, go for the vibe. If you wake up feeling something completely different – something not even on your vacation “schedule,” it’s yours for the taking.
