Weekly connection Somewhere I read that rolling a tennis ball under your foot was good for back and foot pain. Since a tennis ball is kind of soft, and it doesn’t really feel like one is doing much of anything, I thought I would help the process along.

You know, speed things up a little, increase the effect, be more efficient. So my bright idea was to use a golf ball instead. It’s much harder than a tennis ball and would get me some results a lot quicker, so I presumed.

For several days I was really going to town with this golf ball. Each time I sat down at my computer I would roll it under the bottom of my foot on the hard floor. I pushed harder and harder envisioning

all this bad connective tissue being stretched and massaged to bring about all kinds of great health benefits.

Well, after a few days of this new exercise, I began to feel some sharp pain under my right foot, and a couple days later I could hardly walk it hurt so bad.

I think what happened is that I actually injured the connective tissue on the bottom of my foot, and instead of making my back and feet feel better, I now

am having difficulty just walking around. It sure is a pain, pun intended, getting older.

The other morning as eight of my dairy cows were standing side by side in the parlor contentedly being milked, the cow at the end took her long nose and tongue and gently nudged the latch of the gate open. I was a few feet away when I noticed her and the rest of the eight begin to walk towards the open gate with the milking machine still attached to their udders.

Before I could get them stopped and the gate closed, four half-milked cows had escaped and the other four had moved down towards the open gate, pulling all the milking machines off of their

udders landing on the floor and creating quite a stir in the parlor.

I quickly shut the vacuum off on each machine, reattached a milker to the four cows that were still in line, and then headed right out to the barn to bring the four escapees back to finish their milking.

Here’s the thing, once the cows walk into the barn from the milking parlor they aren’t too interested in returning to the holding pen as they think their work is done and they are ready to eat some feed and relax for a few hours.

So there I was trying to herd these four cows back to the holding pen when one of the cows tried to make a break for the far end of the

barn. As I turned and tried to push off quickly on my right foot, the pain shot up through my body and I went down, splat, right in the middle of the barn aisle.

I got up, brushed myself off and limped to the far end of the barn to bring her back, muttering under my breath how much I loved her.

Thankfully, I wear coveralls when I milk, so all I had to do was throw them into a wash tub of hot water in the milkhouse scrub them off and hang them up to dry.

That’s been a couple days ago and I’m happy to report that my foot is starting to feel better. Needless to say I stopped rolling anything under my foot as I sit at my computer. It’s taken a few years, but I’m learning that

short cuts are not always the best way to get where we want to go. There certainly are no shortcuts to God. His way is the only way.

In the gospel of John Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

In Matthew 7:13-14 we also read these words in the Message translation; “Don’t look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life-to God-is vigorous and requires total attention.

Cars on Main cruising again in Pecatonica

Even though citizens are still able to register their vehicles for the late July event, there are certain opportunities already missed, including event apparel distribution.

There are certain prizes and awards given away during the annual Cars on Main event in Pecatonica.

Winners, which can include best of show and overall top pick honors are accorded during the event. Raffles and dash plaques are also featured during the celebration.

When Cars on Main first began, a few cars found their way to the streets of Pecatonica. The event grew with even more cars arriving in the second season.

Over 100 and shortly after, 200 were taking their space on village streets.

As the years moved along, hundreds of cars were featured with the goal of 300 participants or more always etched in the minds of organizers.

Display vehicles will be viewable along Main Street towards the Pecatonica River north and south approaching Fifth Street.

Show vehicles will also be lined up along Second, Third and Fourth Streets, for about a block or two in each direction.

Registration for the annual Pecatonica Cars on Main is ongoing and goals for participation have already been set by the committee responsible for the July 24 event. Registration can occur on the day of the event, reportedly.

From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. next Saturday, the roads will be closed as they are filled with autos representing American history.

The annual Cars on Main event has regularly drawn in excess of 200 vehicles during its run, covering a decade of display highlighting nearly a century of citizen pride.

Cars and trucks dating as old as the late 1920’s, with other means of early days transportation share the spotlight during the day of appreciation.

Social networking sites have helped push along the message to register for the July 24 event to homes and businesses across the nation.

Hundreds of vehicles are expected with the possibility of even greater success and larger numbers, still existing, Interested individuals can log on to find out more.

The history of Cars on Main goes back over a decade with an early partnership formed that helped put together an idea that became what is now regionally-recognized as one of the most interactive options available in the realm of automotives.
