Did you know? Summer is quickly flying by. Between sports, vacations and everyday life it is easy to forget about our health. We have all heard,“be thankful that you have your health,” but what is true health anyway? The World Health Organization defines health as, “The state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease, or infirmity. Health is a dynamic condition resulting from a body’s constant adjustment, and adaptation in response to stresses, and changes in the environment, for maintaining an inner equilibrium called homeostasis.” Gray’s Anatomy states the purpose of the brain and nervous system is to control and coordinate the function of all the organs, all the tissues, and all the systems in the body, and to adapt that person, and that person’s body to the environment around them. As chiropractors, we look for those areas that are disrupting the way the body is designed to function. When this interference is removed, communication between the brain and nerve system normalizes, and there is an increase in function on all levels: physically, mentally, and socially. There is an increase in the body’s ability to fight off illness, to keep healthy, and express vitality. Here’s to Your Best Health!

Holding heaven: Babies bring joy, love
You forget how tiny they are. And helpless. So utterly, completely helpless. And exhausted. And hungry. And explosive. So literally explosive. Eat, poop, sleep, repeat. Cry, but not often if you are lucky. Babies – of the human variety. They are born helpless and remain dependent on parental care for 18 (or sometimes 40) years. Animals of other species are born helpless, but don’t often stay with mom and dad nearly as long. Chimpanzees are one of the closest and with good cause. They share 98 percent of their DNA with humans. Either we are like them or they are like us. I guess it depends on whom you ask. Chimps are dependent on their mothers for at least five years and are considered an adult at age 15. Elephants also spend more than a few years with their mothers. Their babies are born weighing upwards of
250 pounds (ouch!) and are adults at about 18 years of age. Maternal sacrifices aren’t rare, but porcupines deserve an extra ounce of our respect. Their babies are born with quills and are dependent on mom for five to 12 months. I’m surprised she doesn’t kick them out sooner, quills and all. Raccoons are born blind and completely helpless yet they set out to conquer the world on their own 10 months later. Let’s make the transition from months to weeks. Kittens start walking when they are about three weeks old. They are ready to leave mama five to nine weeks later. And on to day(s): lizard babies are born knowing how to walk and hunt. They are able to acquire their own food at only a day old. Despite differing rates of growth and independence, puppies, kittens and even baby porcupines all have
JILL PERTLER Contributer
one thing in common: they are cute. Babies are created to be cute. There is a scientific reason for this. Cuteness makes it more likely they’ll be cared for; it helps further the species. Newborn humans are no exception. Their eyes are large – as big as they’ll be when baby becomes an adult. Their noses are small and their face round. It’s a combination adults find adorable. Their little fingers and tiny toes are practically irresistible. Even when they cry at 3:00 in the morning and wake up with a full diaper, they are still cute. Most of the time at least.
And I haven’t even touched on the reality of the sweet baby smell. There’s nothing like it. Well, except for puppy breath. The noises human babies make are beyond endearing. I’m not talking about crying, but about the snurks and snurzles, grunts and growls. It’s all part of nature’s clever plan to make us fall instantly in love. And it works. I haven’t had a new baby in my life for more than 16 years. I’d forgotten how precious they are, especially when they are one of yours – or nearly so. And this time I realize how fleeting and cherished each moment is because it will all be over much too quickly. I didn’t realize how much I’d like her. I knew I’d love her, but I wasn’t as prepared for the liking part. I guess the like and love sort of overlap. I didn’t think I was ready for this next stage but I suppose it’s like be-
coming a parent. I wasn’t ready for that either, and it worked out okay. We had four babies and managed to keep them all alive. I guess that says something. She’s six weeks old and I can already see changes. Eye contact. A growing awareness of the world around her. A familiarity with those she sees often. Smiles that aren’t gas. Each change is welcome, but again I reference the word fleeting. She still loves to snuggle and sleep in my arms. I’d hold her forever if I could because holding her is like holding a piece of heaven. I’m so glad she came down here to spend some time with us. that would be fine. The cost of our double ticket was not wasted as I felt the evening cruise was worth it entirely. We opted to do the day cruise. The morning was sunny and bright and beautiful. We took the upper deck this time and my Prince decided to not wear the provided poncho as we did really get too wet the night before. The day cruise was different. They took us farther into the crashing water. We went close. 681,000 gallons pounding every second. 2500 tons of force. The spray is fierce. And fantastic. We got soaked. And we loved it. We loved every minute of our mini-vacation. It was a spontaneous last-minute decision to tack on the side trip. I’m so glad we did. (Note to self: Plan to be more spontaneous.) I am not sure if the billboard is true, that Niagara Falls is one of the sev-

the crowd cheered. They then donned their plastic ponchos and we were off into the mist. Heading straight into the thunderous falls, illuminated at night, was nothing short of magical. It felt like a fairy tale experience and gratitude overwhelmed me. The boat then turned and proceeded to a calm spot to watch the fireworks. A memorable night for sure. The next morning, I told my husband that I didn’t care if we did the daytime cruise. It would be hard to top the night before so if he wanted to use the time to do something else,

Hey Kids!! Summer Fun Is Just A Phone Call Away!
We recently took a quick side trip up to Niagara Falls. We were already in Pittsburgh and Buffalo for business so we scootied across the Canadian border to take in one of the seven wonders of the world. Many places do not live up to the hype. The falls did not disappoint. I loved Niagara Falls and want to revisit the area (Niagara on the Lake, wineries) when we have more time to spend. My client in Buffalo advised us to take the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge to have less wait getting through customs and have a prettier drive. We arrived in overcast weather, but the scenery was still magnificent. The drive was lovely and the falls, of course, impressive. Rain or shine, the force and volume of waters crashing is mesmerizing. The rain held off and the view/ the experience was not diminished in any way. On this Sunday afternoon, we wandered the crowded sidewalks and took it all in. At our age and phase of life, we tell ourselves to go for it. We are healthy, we are here, we may never pass this way again, so if we want to do something, go for it. We did the zip line (does not go across the falls), the “journey behind the falls”, and bought tickets for the evening fireworks cruise and a daytime cruise. The ticket booth attendant suggested we come back in the morning for the day cruise as the weather was predicted to be sunny. Suggestion taken. At the end of our first day as we emerged from the “Behind the Falls” adventure, the sky cleared and we saw the famous rainbows in the mist clouds produced by the falls. As we boarded the boat (The Hornblower) for our evening cruise, I was enchanted that a small wedding party was allowed to get on first. A bride, her groom, the officiant, and three young gentlemen in black tuxes joined them. When we got on board, my Prince and I went straight to the front of the ship for best viewing experience of the fireworks and the falls. Much to my delight, the happy couple was exchanging vows right above us in the top deck corner. The groom faced me and I watched with tears in my eyes as he said his vows. I couldn’t hear and I think they were speaking French, but I could see the love and sincerity on his face and in his eyes as he spoke to his beloved. The love was palpable. They exchanged rings, kissed, and
