I choose gratitude during the tough times

Life can seem complicated sometimes. Because it is.

There are responsibilities and deadlines. Work is demanding. Home life is demanding. There are never enough hours in the day - or the night for that matter.

Sleep deprivation is real. The threat of COViD is real.

For more than a year we have been social distancing and masking up and staying home and often alone and calling that our new life. Our new normal.

I’ve had my share of pain and suffering in the last six months. At times I’ve been a full-blown pity party. I’ll readily acknowledge that fact.

But after going through it all, I’ve decided to focus on gratitude. We all have things to be grateful for, even in our darkest hours. A matching pair of socks. The sunrise or sunset. Puppy breath.

There is always something

Until now. Ready? Because this is big.

Gratitude isn’t just for the good times. Or even the mini good times. Or for the good times, at all.

When gratitude is most important, most crucial, most valuable - is during the tough good in every day, even if times. During hardships. it is the tiniest and most When things don’t go our inconsequential of good, or way. When we want to cry. not so good.

Heck, when we want to wail, I had a eureka this because our hour, our day, morning, when contemplating our month, our life feels just gratitude and what I had to be that bad. thankful for.

I’ve been trying to sell my house, but that hasn’t happened with the swiftness I’d hoped. I’m grateful for this.

It’s taught me flexibility.

It’s given me a new outlook on priorities, not to mention control (or lack thereof).

It’s made me re-evaluate the togetherness of my family.

It’s beckoned my creativity.

It’s helped me understand the importance of living in the moment. It’s given me the opportunity to decide how I’m going to perceive this situation.

I choose gratitude.

Six months ago I lost my husband of 33 years. How do you find gratitude in that?

With effort. Sometimes with great effort. But you can find a way. I have found a way.

He loved me truly, madly, deeply, and those feelings were reciprocated on my end.

We never questioned that. We still love each other; that will never end. I feel him every day. He is close. He is waiting for me. We experienced a love of lifetimes. Most people don’t get that privilege, but we did. We are soulmates; I have absolutely no doubt about that. He is happy and in a wonderful place; I have no doubt about that, either.

My husband not being here, physically, is a great loss for sure. And I could sink deep into it. It’s tempting, sometimes. But no one wins with that outcome. Certainly not me.

My husband may no longer be here physically, but gratitude brings him closer. I can feel it. I can feel him. We are just apart for now, for the moment. And that moment is brief when compared to a love that is eternal. I choose gratitude for all that we had and all that we still have.

Life isn’t always easy. It often isn’t easy. We all have hardships and pain and days when the sky is dark and up seems down and down seems up. When you find yourself downtrodden and feeling low, remember you aren’t alone.

We all struggle. And we all have a choice in the face of adversity - we choose how we perceive and respond to our own situation. I humbly ask you to consider gratitude as on option.

Dare to look up and see the sunshine and blue skies even on the darkest of days.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord

My wife and I are extremely thankful for another incredible blessing from the God of heaven.

Friday morning our daughter and son-in-law welcomed into their family of four beautiful little girls a brand new bouncing baby boy, He weighed in at a

robust 9 lbs. and 1 ounce.

And you can’t imagine how excited this pack of sisters

is to have a little brother.

We were so blessed to be able to spend Friday, Friday night and Saturday morning with the girls as they couldn’t stop talking about their new wonderful little baby brother. At one point they all were holding their dolls practicing in great

anticipation of being able to hold their new brother.

Isn’t it great that in these difficult days of godlessness in our world and with God’s coming judgment on the horizon that God still chooses to bless His people? Recently John MacArthur, the pastor of

Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California welcomed a grandson of his own who had been given the name, John MacArthur III, after his dad and grandpa.

Pastor John was asked to comment on how he felt about his grandson coming into such a messed-up world. I loved his response.

Pastor John said that he was tremendously excited for his grandson to become a future Christian leader to a lost world.

He said he was excited to think of how much power the Holy Spirit was going to pour out on the Christian leaders of this next generation just as God has done for each generation that has ever lived.

We feel the same way about each of our 10 grandchildren, that God is going to equip them with tremendous power just as He has always provided for Christian of each new dark generation on this earth.

What is great is that it is such a blessing to be able to assist in their Christian training. In fact, we have started a tradition that the last thing we do before

anyone heads for home whenever we are together is to read a Bible story and pray together.

I love also how whenever we are together over the noon hour and my phone prayer alert goes off, the grandkids call out that it’s time to stop and pray. They know when my alarm goes off at noon, we are going to pray. What a blessing!

It’s Memorial Day weekend and my thoughts always seem to return to a favorite uncle of mine.

Uncle Don was a medic in WWII, and he passed away at the age of 77 in March of ’99.

When he was just 22 years old, he ended up on the beaches of France at the Normandy invasion. A few years back when I was also 22 years old, he and I took a vacation trip together all the way to Arizona to see his sister and take a look at the mighty Grand Canyon. It was just him and me in my shiny new Ford Thunderbird with its fivespeed manual transmission and turbo powered engine.

• Connection Indiana home. He kissed Aunt Irene good-bye and we took off for 10 days of driving across the good old USA together. We drove and drove and talked and talked.

He told me many stories of his young life growing up on a North Dakota wheat farm. He told me about how he used to drive a team of 12 horses across the fields as a small boy working alongside his 11 siblings.

Somewhere out across the vast western United States he told me things that he had never spoken of before. He spoke of Normandy Beach that cool June morning in 1944. He said that he barely made it to shore that day because he couldn’t swim, and they were in very deep water with heavy packs on their

He said that in his battalion of over 400 men, there were only 23 medics and 19 of his comrades died that day on Normandy beach. He told me that he felt God spared his life for a purpose.

All medics wore a big red cross on their backs and were not supposed to be fired upon, but that didn’t stop the Germans from shooting and killing them. That day was the most traumatic and gutwrenching day he had ever experienced in all his life.

When I think about the sacrifice these soldiers made so that we might have the freedoms that we have known down through the years, I am just overwhelmed and it makes

me never want to take the blessings that God has given us in this country for granted, not for one minute.

These men fought to not only secure our freedom and liberty but also the freedom and liberty of people all over the world. So very many in our country do not realize the depth of sacrifice that has been given on our behalf.

So many have not respected our beautiful flag

or the national anthem of this most blessed country.

So many don’t take the time to give thanks to God and to the families of those who gave their very lives.

So many today don’t even begin to understand the price that has been paid for this country’s blessing.

And it isn’t just those who fought in WWII, but in every war and conflict that we have ever entered into. I just want to say a thank you

to all who served.

I love the scripture found in Psalm 33:12 that reads, Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord! We have been so truly blessed to have been raised in a land with where so many of our forefathers and mothers were committed to Jesus Christ.
