After spending the last three decades with my husband, I’ve learned marriage isn’t what I thought it would be. In some ways it is harder. In myriad ways it exceeds my expectations. And like a fine wine, it really does get better with age. Take heed, newlyweds.

Weekly connection A couple weeks ago on a cold wet morning, one of my young first calf Angus heifers had a tiny little heifer calf herself. Since my three beef cows are all expecting calves this spring I have been checking on them each morning after milking. I would make my rounds first going to check on my Holstein heifers at one farm, and then my three beef cows at another farm. This particular morning I had gone out to check on my three beef cows and there was one of my heifers standing over her newborn calf in the corner of the cattle shed. The young mother looked good as she was standing there licking her calf off, so I just hopped back in my pick up and took off for home. I

wanted to give her and her calf a little privacy so the baby would get up and begin to nurse her mother.

It was a cold, snowy and rainy morning, but that didn’t concern me much. I was sure that all little beef calves were tougher than nails, and that everything would be just fine in a few minutes. I didn’t give them a second thought throughout the day.

That evening after milking, I once again drove over to take a peek at my new calf and young mother.

When I arrived at the shed, however, I was shaken because there was the mother standing in the exact same spot she had been standing at in the morning. The calf was lying there in the same place where she had been lying in the morning as well. As I

peered in at them, the mother looked at me and gave a feeble little moo as if to say, “Can you please help us?”

Since I trusted the mother who I had raised since she was a calf, I walked into the shed and right up to them.

She stepped back a couple steps and I lifted the calf to her feet. She immediately flopped back down in a heap shaking and shivering. How could I have been so negligent, I

thought to myself?

It didn’t take me long to quickly carry her out of that shed and into the cab of my warm pickup truck.

I immediately drove her back to the warm barn office and rubbed the shivering girl down with a towel. Since I freeze excess fresh colostrum milk when my dairy cows freshen, I grabbed a bottle from the freezer and set it in a bucket of scalding hot water to thaw. Within an hour or so the little calf had drunk a bottle of colostrum and had stopped shivering. She lie there peacefully resting in the warmth of the office. The next day I took my cattle trailer over to where the mother and the other two beef cows were and brought them back to my

farm where I could keep a closer eye on them. I put the mother in a small pen in the shed where her calf was waiting for her. The two of them were elated to be together again and before long the baby was nursing from her mother with her tail wagging furiously.

The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 2:7, but we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. There is something very special about a nursing mother and Paul says that he and his team cared for the church with the gentleness of a nursing mother. Wouldn’t it be great if all God’s people were this kind and nurturing? Until next week, God bless.

There have been some awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets here lately that make me ooh and ahh. My phone camera does not capture the magic, but my heart does.

Other parts of the country have more glorious sun shows than what we get here in northern Illinois and I wonder if they appreciate it every day.

When my husband retires, I told him my plan to get up every morning to watch the sunrise together. Then I realized it would be watching daybreak. A pretty sunrise is not a daily occurrence. The sky goes from dark to daylight, but with no predictable color show.

A National Geographic article discusses why some sunsets are so spectacular and others not. “What we see with our human eyes is just a tiny part of the electromagnetic radiation that’s given off by the sun. That radiation contains a wide spectrum of wavelengths, but your eyes are only sensitive to certain parts of it: the socalled visible wavelengths. Some of those visible wavelengths don’t even reach your eye. There’s a good sunset every night; we just can’t always see it.”

Our eyeballs/humanness have limited capabilities. The good news is that we can expand our capacity. Maybe not in our physical eyesight, but we can expand our capacity for beauty, love, kindness, magic.

There may not be a picture-postcard sky display every day, but there is beauty all around. In nature. In people.

In circumstances. In strawberry ice cream from ALDI. The National Geographic article continues: “True sunset occurs a minute or so before you see the sun disappear.

What you see is a kind of mirage; the light is getting bent around the horizon by the effect of refraction. Our eyes are sensitive to a very tiny part of the spectrum of the sun’s wavelengths, and that’s responsible for the way we see our environment. We can only see a tiny part of what’s going on.”

We humans say butterflies are legally blind, but that is not true. Their eyes and way of seeing are completely different from ours.

Humans have “trichromatic” color vision. All the colors we perceive can be produced by mixing three primary colors—red, yellow, and blue. Different creatures have different types of lightsensing cells. Butterflies have six or more types of light-sensing cells. They truly “see” differently than we do and can see colors that are invisible to the human eye.

Even though some things are invisible to our eyes, the benefit of being human is that we can pay attention to our sight.

We all know someone who sees situations optimistically and someone who sees dire at every turn. (Tell me, who is more pleasant to be around?)

Right now I see moving clouds out my window. They are magnificent. I see the trees, in various shades of green. I see birds, a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.

I will look more. I will see more. I will appreciate more. When the dusk turns to dark and I witness no colorful sunset, I will still know it’s there.

I will take a moment to reflect on all the beauty I did see today. And realize there was way more that I missed.

relationship. Everyone needs to hear good things about who they are or what they do, especially from their spouse.

Sometimes it’s best to bite your tongue. Not literally, but you don’t have to say everything that comes to mind. If in doubt, don’t say it. You can always voice your opinion at a later time if needed.

Laugh together.

Always be honest, but never brutally honest.

Talk about your day. Every day.

Share mostly the good, but also the bad.

Be consistently kind to one another so that you both know you can count on kindness at home.

Teach your children this tenet as well.

Little things mean a lot. Your dad brings me a cup of coffee each morning. This small gesture provides positivity to the start of our day and has come to mean the world to me. Find something small and make it big.

Stick out the hard times – and there will be hard times. Even if both you and your spouse are perfect as individuals, no marriage is. And although this one sounds hard (because it is) there is an upside. The hard times make you stronger and you will be glad for them in the end. (Or at least glad you got through them.)

Don’t seek the perfect spouse; seek to be the perfect spouse. The

goal is unattainable, but it puts your perspective in the right place: on your significant other and not you. You don’t get married so another person can make you happy. It’s vice versa. Basically, that means loving unselfishly, which isn’t easy to do. But the things in life that are the most meaningful and worthwhile aren’t ever easy.

That’s part of what makes them so valuable – and worth doing.
