Three uncles: New baby brings joy to family By

Another worried out loud about his sister, the baby and whether everything would go as planned. He grew more quiet and thoughtful as the day lingered on.

The third spent the day Googling various labor and birth-related topics, sharing bits and pieces of his newfound information with the rest of the family; knowledge is power.

The golfer returned from his outing and still there was no baby. He probably could have done 18 after all.

Why was this baby taking so long to get here? Impatience lingered in the air.

Day faded into night and the worrier and Googler opted to go to bed and try to sleep. I don’t think they were successful, but their aim was an attempt at normalcy. The golfing son was in it for the long haul, determined to wait it out until baby arrived.

Arrive she did at 11:58 p.m. and although they all were beyond eager to meet her, each took his own approach toward the newest member of our

family when we made our first visit that next morning.

Two of them fought over the right to be first uncle to hold her. After a quick round of rock- paper-scissors, Google won out over golf. They all expressed amazement at her tiny hands and firm grip on their now seemingly enormous index fingers.

They gushed over her. “She’s strong for being so little.” “Look at her baby fingernails!” “Her ears are so tiny!” She dozed like an exhausted newborn in their arms and they were impressed and in love. Their awe and amazement was undeniable. Even and especially from the son who opted to hold her last.

When it came his turn, he sat down and made a crook in his arms like he’d seen his other brothers do. Another brother gingerly lowered her and they completed the hand-off with a tender loving care I’d not previously witnessed and didn’t know they were capable of. In their eyes she was as delicate as a newborn and they treated her as such: treasured and fragile.

They’d be the first to admit they are more adept at handing off a football versus a tiny human being, but during the last week they’ve certainly given the latter their best efforts.

At exactly two minutes before midnight on a recent Sunday, soon-to-be Monday, my three sons became instant uncles. Their excitement and curiosity regarding the whole process has been interesting (to say the least).

Early on Sunday morning, they were all aware that their very-pregnant sister had gone into the hospital and the possibility of a baby was imminent. As a group they were inquis-

He worried about doing something that might make her cry. Oh please don’t let her cry! He’s never been an uncle before and newness can be unsettling. She slept right through his consternations.

At one point she wrinkled her nose and then her lips rose at the edges in what looked suspiciously like a smile.

His face lit up. His shoulders relaxed and he settled more comfortably into his chair. Maybe this baby holding gig wasn’t so scary after all.

“She smiled already and she’s not even a day old!” More gushing ensued.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him it was probably gas.

Realtors: Proposed statewide property tax untenable ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

The best way to pay off Illinois’ $130 billion in unfunded pension debt is a statewide 1 percent property tax on top of local property tax levies for the next few decades, according to a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

In the report, Thomas Haasl, Rick Mattoon, and Thom Walstrom said the best way to raise $130 billion in revenue would be to add another line in homeowners’ property tax bills. This would cost the owner of a $250,000 home another $2,500 annually.

The report estimates a 1 percent tax on all home values in the state would pay off the debt in 30 years.

The analysts said this would be the “most equitable” way to raise the money because homeowners are more likely to have benefited from state spending.

“It seems reasonable that they should pay a larger share of the costs,” the report said.

Jon Broadbooks, vice president for communications for Illinois Realtors, said homeowners would likely revolt if they were to see property taxes spike like that.

Good wishes for retiring Loves Park mayoral assistant

Long time Assistant to the Mayor of Loves Park, Gail Daughtry, is finishing her 29th year with the city.

Daughtry recalled how she began her career with the City of Loves

Park after completing 16 years of legal background in the land title industry as a title officer and examiner.

She notes that she first served “former Mayor Joe Sinkiawic for eight years, former Mayor Darryl Lindberg for 20 years,” and is pres-

ently finishing her first year with Mayor Greg Jury.

Gail says her main function in her position “has always been to relieve the Mayor of administrative detail, which involves many projects, venues and responsibilities.” Gail has

represented the city in the past by serving on Parks Pinnacle Awards, Loves Park’s 50th Anniversary Committee and United Way’s Auditing Committee.

She is currently the longest tenured Board Member of the Parks

Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the Loves Park Rotary Club (since 1999), having served twice on the Board of Directors. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Swedish Historical Society as Vice-President and of the Friends of the North Suburban Library.

In 1993, Gail received the “Service Above Self” award from the Loves Park Rotary Club.

She is a lifelong resident of the Loves Park area and she and husband Jesse have been married 45 years, and are members of Grace Lutheran Church, Grace Sanctuary Choir and The Sounds of Grace. Together they have four children and ten grandchildren.

Daughtry says, “Retirement has been calling my name, and I will be retiring from employment with the City of Loves Park on May 31st.”

Over the years, Gail Daughtry has done an excellent job of transitioning from one mayor to another and has always put forth a good effort in having information available for aldermen, city boards, and for city council meetings.

Loves Park City Clerk Bob Burden notes, “Gail has served three mayors in her 29 years, and has a tremendous knowledge of our city and its history. She was always a total team player and excelled in all she did. Gail loves the City of Loves Park and it shows. She will be missed by us all, and she can be proud of a job well done.”

Current Mayor Greg Jury adds, “Gail ‘s dedication to Loves Park has been truly unbelievable and the residents and the staff have been blessed by her commitment to the city.

I was fortunate to have her stay on here in the mayor’s office for my first year to guide me through this very busy time. I hope she enjoys her well deserved retirement!”

Former Mayor Darryl Lindberg says, “I had the pleasure of having Gail Daughtry as my executive assistant for the entire 20 years I served as Mayor of Loves Park. Prior to working with me, Gail served in the same capacity for former Mayor Joe Sinkiawic, so she started with me already armed with a tremendous amount of knowledge on how the mayor’s office ran.

“Prior to serving as Mayor, I was the Police Chief. That position also required a close relationship with the mayor’s office and Gail was my contact person. Gail consistently gathered facts to help me in my decisions and helped to solve many of the day-to-day crises that occur in the city.

“The important job Gail did required a vast set of skills, including confidentiality, loyalty, budgeting, financial, forecasting revenues and expenditures and a strong desire to keep our community moving forward. Gail possesses all of those skills and used them continually.

“The Executive Assistant to the Mayor also requires a person who is willing to perform above and beyond the normal day to day operations and projects. Gail always served however and whenever she was called up. She was active in the Loves Park Rotary Club, served the Parks Chamber Board of Directors, served on the Swedish Historical Society Board and still serves those organizations. She has also served throughout the years as an integral part of the Young at Heart Committee helping to organize and gather volunteers to make the festival a huge success every year. Gail also serves Grace Lutheran Church as a member of their choir.

“Gail Daughtry is the type of person to always accept challenges and work while continuing to focus on the future by using the skills she learned throughout the years.

“Although she will be missed at the City of Loves Park, I’m sure she will treasure the time she will have with her husband, Jesse (who also served as a long term employee and Civil Service Commissioner) and her family. We wish her all the best!”

West Nile Virus surveillance According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), West Nile Virus (WNV) is spread to humans through mosquitoes that have been infected by a bird carrying the virus. In 2017, IDPH reported 90 cases of West Nile in humans in Illinois, which resulted in 8 deaths. Most people that are infected have very few symptoms or experience a mild fever and headache. Those most at risk for adverse symptoms are individuals such as the elderly or those with weakened immune systems. There have been no reported cases yet in 2018.

Symptoms of WNV include: • Fever • Headache • Body aches

• Skin rash • Swollen lymph nodes The Ogle County Health Department will be surveying 9 sites in the county for infected mosquitoes. Additionally, OCHD will be collecting dead birds in order to test for West Nile Virus. The following types of birds will be collected for testing: Top Priority - Crows - Blue Jays Second Priority - House Finches - House Sparrows - Robins Other Eligible birds: - Blackbirds

- Bluebirds - Catbirds - Cardinals - Chickadees - Cowbirds - Creepers - Goldfinches - Grackles - Finches - Flycatchers - Larks - Mockingbirds - Nuthatches - Orioles - Purple martins - Sparrows - Starlings

- Swallows - Tanagers - Thrashers - Cedar waxwings and wrens Excluded Birds: waterfowl, gulls, vultures, chickens or eagles cannot be tested.

These birds will be found most likely in midsummer to early fall. Birds that will be collected should have been dead for less than 48 hours and show no sign of decomposition such as strong odor, no presence of maggots and no bloating.

If a dead bird is found, please contact the Ogle County Health Department at 815-5626976 as soon as possible.

Stillman twins on course to finish Naval flight training

Twins Brianna and Ashley Koenig went to Stillman Valley High School together, followed by academic careers at Rock Valley College and Illinois State University, together. It only made sense that both young ladies would decide their next step was to go into the Navy. While both sisters are currently in flight training, the togetherness ends there.

Brianna is currently stationed at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola,

FL, where she is training to be a Flight Officer. She finished the academic portion of API training and earned her flight suit on Friday, May 18. She then had two weeks left of continued training after that. Upon completion she will be sent to a Student Naval Flight Officer Training Squadron to continue her training.

Ashley is currently training to be a helicopter pilot for the Navy while stationed at the Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton, FL Both Koenig’s current rank is Ensign.
