Thoughts on garbage day It was in the wee morning hours; I was summoned from sleep by a grinding and screeching sort of noise that is universally recognized as the sound of a garbage truck doing its business.

Panic set in. We hadn’t pulled our garbage to the curb. Did we, gulp, miss garbage day?

I was now wide awake approximately 90 minutes before my regular getting up time. If that’s not a way no one wants to start their day I’m

not sure what is.

But back to garbage day, or in my By case Garbage! Day! (Oh no!) Was it JILL ours? I hoped not. I wracked my brain.

One would think garbage would be a more coordinated effort: with everyone having their pick up on the same day.

But life isn’t coordinated like that.

Neither is garbage.

There are different garbage companies with different schedules. We are free to pick our vendor of choice.

Free to make our own garbage. And apparently free will is running rampant in my neighborhood. Either that or we have a lot of garbage.

Maybe both.

Garbage trucks frequent my street nearly every day. I see and hear them all the time. We do our best to remember our allotted day and at the assigned time we haul our trash down to the curb and the truck picks it up and carries it away to be forgotten and never thought of again.

Wouldn’t it be nice if life was like the garbage? We’d pick a day and wheel our proverbial garbage down to the curb so it could be carted off and forever forgotten. The garbage truck would arrive and haul away all our mistakes, regrets, worries, burdens and

Wouldn’t it be nice? Sure it would, but real-life garbage isn’t as easy to get rid of as an empty can of chicken noodle soup. It doesn’t work that way.

Real life garbage is stickier than that. It hangs on. We have to live with our choices and decisions and move forward one step at a time. And, during the times when our garbage can feels overly full or too heavy to carry down to the curb, I think we perhaps should give ourselves some slack and realize we aren’t the only ones in the neighborhood with garbage.

When our can is so full the lid won’t close, we can look across the street and see that our neighbor is in the same situation. It may feel like we are the only one with garbage or with too much garbage or with too much garbage to deal with, but we aren’t.

That sort of thinking is a waste of time and quite simply fodder for the rubbish pile.

Sumner Park District Meeting Date Changes

Wild weather and baseball It seems like late March and April used to be much more mild throughout my lifetime than what we have experienced the last few years.

In years past there were more sunny spring days in the 50’s and 60’s.

There were more robin sightings, more gentle rain showers here and there, and then we experienced a gradual move into the 70’s by the month of May. Now there seems to be flooding one week, and snow storms the next. The variety in our weather these days is rather unprecedented.

On Sunday, Cathy and I drove into Janesville after church, and we ran into a full blown snowstorm. I mean it felt like we were right in the middle of winter. Instead of April 14, it seemed like a February winter day complete with wind, driving snow and icy cold temperatures. It was weird because after we saw a movie and did some shopping, we drove back to our farm here west of Monroe and the storm completely disappeared. As we drove along, it became dry and calm just twenty or thirty miles west of Janesville and Beloit.

Now I know the weather can change very quickly in these parts and just like that we can have a 60 degree day with sunshine, but it just seems like the weather is completely unpredictable these days no matter what time of year it is. One of my brother lives in Colorado Springs and he sent a photo on Sunday morning of his backyard deck. Here it is mid-April, and they had just received five or six inches of fresh snow. My sister-in-law lives near Fort Dodge, Iowa and last week she was posting pictures of a snowstorm they were experiencing as well. It’s rather fascinating to read about all the flooding, droughts, wildfires, tornadoes and hurricanes that occur these days all over the country. There always seems to be some major issue going on in our weather.

As a high school baseball coach for the last almost 30 years, my teams have bundled up and played in all kinds of Wisconsin weather, and this spring is no exception. It’s never all that enjoyable to play baseball when there are snow flurries swirling around in the air, but we have done it more than a few times these last few seasons. The funny thing is that all at once in the month of May, we seem to move right into the heat of summer.

There really doesn’t seem to be as much springtime as there used to be.

the bunt sign to move two runners into scoring position. He ignored me, swung at the first pitch, and grounded out to third base. I pulled him aside immediately and confronted him about blowing off my sign.

“Oh, I’m not going to bunt. I’m hot right now,” he said. Needless to say, despite the cold weather, after he said that, I got pretty hot myself, and sent him right to the bench. I didn’t start him the next game either, even after he apologized. Coaching isn’t for cowards. The good news is that after a little discipline, he’s back to being a team player again.

Hebrews 12:11 reads; No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.

Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Most of the players I have coached over the years respond pretty well to being disciplined. I think it’s because they know deep down inside it’s for their own good, and of course, because they want to play. Until next week, keep looking for spring. Happy Easter and God bless.
