In my opinion

Scrolling Facebook I read that cinnamon rolls and chili were “a beloved combo” in the Midwest.

I hail from the Midwest and had never heard of that pairing. Does not sound appealing, but it made me hungry for a cinnamon roll. So I posted this tidbit of info with a yummy photo.

Another Midwesterner, I’ll assume an Illinois gal like me, posted that my leg was being pulled. Another gal immediately chimed in and said she grew up in Kansas and it is indeed a thing.

I then found an internet source that states chili and cinnamon rolls go together in many Midwest states, but Illinois was not mentioned. A fast food joint in Nebraska, Runza, offers a chili and cinnamon roll combo, and school lunch menus across the land started serving these two together back in

Hmm. Okay.

There are many food pairings that we don’t think about and take for granted or don’t know about at all so I guess it’s where you come from and what you are used to.

Once upon a time, peanut butter was not friends with jelly or chocolate, but look at it now, married to both. Plus there’s peanut butter and banana. Peanut butter and honey. (Does peanut butter hail from Utah?)

People make peanut butter and pickle sandwiches or put peanut butter on a burger. My sons grew up with peanut butter on their waffles, a tradition in their dad’s family. Peanut butter gets around.

Some foods become fads and get paired with everything. Think bacon. Or hot sauce. Or bourbon.

Life’s lessons

She was always the little sister; I was the big one. She was expected to learn things from me. What I didn’t realize at the time was that I was learning just as much from her.

Growing up and growing into adulthood, my sister has taught me many life lessons worth noting. Some of them are: Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. When the tar gets too hot on a summer day and you are barefoot, get someone who is bigger to carry you across the road.

Two people can easily fit on the a banana seat bike; it’s the front person’s job to steer and pedal. The person in the back just has to hang on tight. Your pet poodle fits just right in the front bike basket.

Sharing is not optional; it is mandatory. Throughout life we will be called upon to share time, toys, parents, love, resources, joy, sorrow

and clothes.

Don’t worry too much about what other people think. You don’t have to sing on key to enjoy karaoke.

Family is family. You don’t get to choose them, and they don’t get to choose you. But at the end of the day, sometimes they are all you’ve got.

Often they are the best you’ve got, and you are lucky for that.

Grow a garden even if you have to do it in pots versus plots. Get your hands dirty. Pick the flowers and bring them inside so everyone can enjoy them. Grow vegetables you can eat.

Make salsa. Nurturing growing things nurtures your life.

Grow a family. Even though she was the little sister, she started her family years before I did mine.

Through her I saw the magic of motherhood – the wonder and splendor of raising and loving a batchful of boys.

Never quit learning. Pick your interests and make them good ones.

cattle who need their cows to calve in the spring so they can live outside under the stars without fear of frigid cold. Dairymen, however, want their herds to give birth year around so as to keep the milk production consistent throughout the year.

So my three beef cows are ready to calve any day, but I usually have three to four dairy cows giving birth each month.

Last year I decided to try and avoid my dairy cows giving birth in January and February, and so I had several bred to freshen in March and none in January and February. Does anyone know how cold the first two weeks of March were?

Yeah, it was bad and January and February were quite mild.

Sometimes a fella just can’t win for losin’.

Anyway, I had a couple dairy cows that freshened last week in my maternity shed.

After spending a few hours with their calves, I needed to move them to the dairy barn so they can be milked. So I backed the trailer up to the shed door and set up a couple gates to route these cows onto the trailer. You would have thought the angel with the flaming

sword was standing at the opening where I needed to walk these ladies to the trailer.

For the life of me these two cows would not walk out of their pen and onto the trailer. I tried sweet talking them, scaring them, yelling at them and whatever else I could do, but they would not walk through the opening.

After about 10 to 15 minutes, I started to get angry, ticked off, upset and my blood pressure started to rise. Suddenly I paused and prayed. “Jesus, I know you don’t want me to get all upset, I’m sorry about that.

Could you give me a little help here please?” This is the honest truth, as soon as I finished talking to the Lord, those two cows turned and walked right through the opening and onto the trailer.

It was absolutely amazing.

I literally laughed out loud for several seconds because of how

God answered that prayer. I thanked him for caring about the littlest things in my life. It’s just so incredible to have a relationship with the God of the universe who loves us all with an undying love.

His love for mankind led him to come to this earth in the form of a man to shed his perfect blood for our sins. Christianity is the only faith that has a Savior who actually gave his life to save us from our sin condition. Either Jesus was who he said he was or he was the greatest deceiver that ever walked the earth.

I was substitute teaching for a fourth grade class the other day and they were asking what BC and AD meant in history. I asked them what the C stood for in BC, and they knew it was Christ, but they weren’t really aware that our global calendar is based on the life of Jesus Christ. That is one pretty special man, the son of God, our Savior and Redeemer.

John 3:16 is probably the most famous verse in the Bible. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes on him will not perish, but have eternal life.
