Slices of life

Familiarity breeds contempt – or confusion

I saw someone familiar at the store today. I knew that I knew her or at least that I’d had cause to interact with her on several or perhaps a few occasions.

Problem is, I couldn’t pinpoint exactly which occasions. I was at the grocery store and she wasn’t a person from the grocery store. I hadn’t seen her there before. She definitely didn’t live at the grocery store, much less work there. I was 100 percent positive of that conclusion.

Still I wasn’t sure, exactly, how well I knew her or from where. Were our kids on the same team? Was she someone from my recent past or more distant and long ago? Was I better acquainted with her husband and perhaps acquainted with her via

One of my own first instances of this sort of out-of-placeness happened when I was in first grade. My teacher osmosis? Were we on first name terms? was Mrs. Corrigan. I assumed, like Did I know her from work? most first graders do, that she lived at Who the H-E double toothpicks was the school. Why wouldn’t she? she?

Imagine my consternation when I This wasn’t the first time I’ve ran into her at the grocery store. To encountered this type of situation – make matters worse (much worse) she seeing someone you know you know was with a man! They were shopping but you don’t know from where together! Laughing and talking. Like a because they are out of place. I’m sure married couple. Exclamation point. no one reading this can in any way I was floored. Mrs. Corrigan had a relate. But I hope so.

In my opinion I don’t think about it much, but today age is on my mind. I’m reading an article that states “once you turn 55 you start to enter the senior age demographic.” Part of me feels like I’m still a college senior, not a senior citizen.

“Senior age demographic?” Wow. My Prince and I achieve that magic number 55 this fall. It’s still months away, (Sept. 29, mark your calendar, send me a card), but that age triggers me.

I already have an AARP card, and my hair has been gray for a couple years now, but no one has yet to offer me a senior citizen discount. It could be because I don’t go to fast food joints, but I’ll take it. Save a dollar because I’m old? SURE! As I ride out the last months of 54, I realize I’m no longer the primary target age of advertising demographics.

And I came up at a loss. I couldn’t figure it out. Not uncommon.

However I move forward toward tomorrow with optimism. I know I will solve this puzzle because I will run into her again and most likely it won’t be at

the grocery store or any other location that lacks the familiarity I seek. Most likely she will be exactly where she is supposed to be (for me).

And likewise I will be where I am supposed to be (for her) and neither of us will be confused (again or any more) and all will be right with the world and we will recognize each other and smile and exchange pleasantries and life will go on. I look forward to it.

Age is a funny thing There’s less media pressure to buy things I don’t need. And yet we over50s spend plenty, on all kinds of stuff.

(Bird seed, for example.)

We don’t go out clubbing (the bands are too loud)(yes, I said it) (#tooloudmeanstooold). We do buy plenty of wine to enjoy at home, while we play Scrabble with friends (#wildandcrazy, #stripscrabble, #justkidding).

Contemplating 55 means accepting I’m past the half-way point of my life. (I plan to exit at age 108.) Time is ticking loudly. (Maybe that’s a good thing, I don’t hear as well as I used to.)

I told my hubby that if there’s things he still wants to pursue, he’s only got 40 good years left (the last decade may be creaky). Do it now because the years evaporate quicker than…something that evaporates really quickly. (#oldagebrainfog).

This article on seniorliving.org says “Senior citizens are also known as elderly persons. A senior citizen is a social demographic based on age.

Someone who is 35, for example, cannot be a senior.”

Not a well-written article for sure, (#crankyoldeditor), but an “elderly person”? Me? Zoinks! (#scoobydooreference, #whippersnappers).

If one is old enough to quote Scooby Doo, and young enough to

interject witty hashtag commentary (#kellyissocool), dol not take on the “elderly person” moniker.

We in our 50s are still ripening.

We most certainly are not in what is called the “declining years.” We are in our reclining on the deck years. Our refining our poetry years. Our fine dining years. Our outshining our youth years. Our moonshining, sun shining, ziplining years.

The article states “a senior citizen is slowing down in their life.” Maybe they/we are working less (#woohoo, #hellyes, #lifeintheslowlane), but slowing down is in the eye of the beholder. Smelling the proverbial roses? Yes, indeed. Taking in their beauty, yes. Appreciating more, absolutely. If that is slowing down, I suggest we all do at any age.

There are many perks to aging, and in fact, I feel perkier already. But if I

kick the bucket right now, I’m happy.

I’ve had a wonderful life and have no unfulfilled longings. There is plenty I still want to see and do, and that is the plan. My Prince and I will be off exploring.

Maybe I’ll start practicing now, asking for the senior citizen discount (#cheapskate). I just read some airlines give travel discounts (#forreal?, #dontbelieveit). I like to road trip too.

Are there gas discounts?

This time of life, being a senior, feels like a college senior again. The future is wide before me, the open road, unlimited possibilities. My travel companion (#zenman, #angelboy, #everythingman) is the best I could ever hope for. Senior age demographic, here we come! #buymecake!

The trip to Green Bay

A couple weeks ago on Friday, March 8, I was up early in the morning as usual feeding my calves, herding my cows into the holding pen, scraping up the freestall barn and finally milking my mixture of Holstein, Brown Swiss and Jersey cows.

I was planning to get my chores done in a timely fashion so I could watch the Black Hawk Girls’ Basketball team play for the Division 5 state championship at the Resch Center in Green Bay. These young ladies are extremely tough farm girls who grew up helping with the daily grind on their family dairy, beef and hog farms here in very rural southwest Wisconsin. They are also very involved in FFA, cattle showing, as well their athletics.

Since 2010 they have played at the state basketball tournament several times bringing home the silver ball twice, but never the gold ball. I went to school with or coached some of their moms and dads here in South Wayne, back in my much younger days, so it’s been fun to feel that connection to the families.

My brother-in-law has been the head girls’ coach for several years here as well. He puts his whole self into it.

He holds summer camps, helps with the youth program, actually coaches the seventh and graders in the early fall, and then starts in immediately with the high school season. He controls all levels of the program.

Anyway, I had completed my chores on this Friday morning, made myself a nice bacon and eggs breakfast, and was now ready to relax in front of my television set to watch the championship game.

This year it was between two tiny little school districts and both of them were undefeated. Clayton, was making their fourth straight appearance at state and Black Hawk was in their second straight state championship game. It was a great match up.

Black Hawk took an early lead, but Clayton hit four three pointers just before halftime and tied the score. In the second half, however, Black Hawk pulled away and a great celebration occurred when the final horn sounded.

They lifted the gold ball high above their heads jumping and shouting for joy, but it was a little bitter sweet. One of their players wasn’t able to be there on this great day.

Before the game as I sat down on my couch, a news update came on

the screen that there had been a bad accident on highway 69 near New Glarus. They showed a picture of an overturned and smashed up SUV. As the game began, the news began to leak out that the family in the accident was actually our close neighbors. There were nine of them, family members and friends, traveling to Green Bay that morning. One of their daughters was on the team and the rest of the family got up early and were on their way to take it all in.

To make a long story short their SUV was rear-ended by a semi-truck when they braked for some deer that were crossing in front of them.

Miraculously after being rammed, spun out of control, hitting a huge snow bank and flipping several times, all nine passengers have survived including their 85-year-old grandpa.

Two walked away with just scratches, but the rest sustained severe injuries. Three or four of them have broken femurs and pelvic bones, and some have broken vertebras, collar bones, and several endured concussions.

The most severely injured was their 12-year-old son, who now, two weeks later is just beginning to be brought out of a coma. Even as he has been in the coma they have done surgery on his neck to fuse his second and fourth vertebrae together because the third was crushed. The tests show that he has feeling in all his limbs.

The amazing thing about this family is that they all have tremendous attitudes and are very aware of God’s hand of protection on their lives. I have had the chance to spend time

with several of them and I ask for my readers to please keep them in your prayers as the recovery will take a long long time.

When things like this happen, we must trust that our loving God is in control. Sometimes he receives our loved ones who know him into heaven and sometimes he keeps people here to give testimony to his love and salvation. Either way God our faith and trust can be strengthened as we call out to him for help and assurance.

Two verses come to mind as I write this. The first one is John 1:12; But to all who received him, to all who call on his name, he gives the right to become children of God. All they need to do is to trust him to save them.

The second verse is Romans 8:28; And we know that all that happens to us is working for our good if we love God and are fitting into his plans.
