Parenthood: Sometimes it’s a bumpy ride

Editor’s note: This column was originally publishing in 2012.

My second born is 17 years old today. Like each of my children, he’s brought me more joy than I ever could have imagined. Well, at least after he got over the colic. And then there was the teensiest bit of parental stress when he got in a couple of (minor) fender benders during the last few months. But between those events, we’ve experienced much joy. And perhaps a bump or two (or many) in the road.

Parenthood is bumpy.

Road construction abounds and hazardous driving

conditions exist day and night. Navigating the streets of parenthood is no drive in the park. It can be difficult. (Did I actually write that out loud?) Please excuse my candor. I know I’m not supposed to admit to being overwhelmed by an overwhelming job. Every once in awhile I joke about the trials and tribulations of parenthood

Weekly connection

I think I have prayed more this week than I have prayed in any one week in my entire life. I used to not like it at all when I would wake up in the middle of the night or in the early morning hours and just lay there thinking about all the things I needed to do.

I’m telling you God has brought revival to my heart because in the last couple weeks the moment I wake up,

and can be assured to get at least one email chastising me for being an ungrateful mother who fails to count her blessings.

I am not ungrateful. Only honest. And I do count them. Every day. Usually more than once.

My kids are blessings beyond imagination. Let’s get that out on the open road right now. I love them more than I ever thought possible. They are miraculous wonders.

If we were going to sugarcoat things, that would be the end of this column. Instead, we’ll leave the sugarcoating to my kitchen countertops. (After my kids

experiment with melting chocolate chips in the microwave – again – while I am at the grocery store.)

After 20 years on the job (no pink slip yet) I’ve come to understand parenting isn’t about sugarcoating. It’s about love. And hard work. And sacrifice. And cleaning chocolate out of the microwave.

It’s about sticking with something (or someone) when things aren’t what you’d anticipated and, then again, when they are something much better than you ever envisioned. My kids cause me to worry. I lose sleep over things they

do or don’t do. I wonder if I’ve done enough for them, or maybe I’ve done too much.

They expose the worst in me sometimes. My patience is short. I don’t take time to listen. I jump to conclusions before I know the entire story. I make a rash judgment, and then wish I hadn’t. I admit this with trepidation. No one wants to confess to being a less than perfect mother.

I am a less than perfect mother.

The road of parenthood is bumpy and I am a human being with little or no talent for driving in restrictive conditions. I am humbled every day when I wake up and

More humility – more revival

my mind goes immediately into a state of praise and prayer.

The moment I pick up my

Bible to read it the same thing happens; I get really hungry for what I’m reading, and I just devour it.

Over the years of my life, I have experienced similar times of refreshing and revival in my soul. This all started when I was just a small child, and I received Jesus Christ into my heart as Savior.

At that moment He became my best friend. He was with

High Top Tree Service LLC

me all through my school days helping me fight against the temptations to sin and walk away from what I was knew was true.

He helped me stay on track. Then when I was twenty-one years old my brother invited me to his school for a Bible

Conference of sorts, and it was then that I received a call to ministry.

We were in a big auditorium at the time listening to a speaker tell how God had saved his life from a life of sin and confusion.

It was very moving and

realize I have been granted the honor of being called Mom by my kids.

My second born child celebrated his birthday today. All in all, navigating the last 17 years with him has been a joy (and will continue to be, as long as he brings his chemistry grade up). I look forward to what lies on the road ahead. What a privilege it is to ride shotgun and have a front seat view as the events unfold.

in a powerful “Holy Spirit moment” I felt the Lord call me into ministry. A few years later he made it more plane that he wanted me to be a pastor.

Once again God spoke

Weekly connection

(Continued from page 3) to my Spirit when I was at another Bible Conference.

This time a group of men from our church had traveled to Chicago, Minneapolis and then to Washington D.C. to three men’s Christian Conferences.

These were absolutely amazing times of revival and through all of that God called me to become a pastor. God works n these ways when people gather together in worship and hunger to learn of His will.

Once again, God is stirring our hearts.

In August of 2019 we began praying together as a church family every day at noon for the Holy Spirit to come and bring a fresh revival to our hearts, our families, our church, our community, even to our nation and indeed the whole world.

We have continued to pray

this prayer every day for almost four years, and we are experiencing the Spirit moving in all those areas that we have been praying for.

When we started to pray for revival in August of 2019, our world was pretty calm. The economy was booming here in the U.S., there was no worldwide health crisis happening. Governments weren’t declaring lockdowns, the death of George Floyd and subsequent rioting around the country hadn’t occurred and life seemed to be going along pretty peacefully. God was preparing us for what was to come.

In 2 Timothy 1:6 we read; for this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you. Paul says for this reason…What reason was that?

e said in the previous verse that he was reminded of Timothy’s sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandma and your mother and now Paul is sure also dwells in him.

God asks us to pray, and to do these things I mentioned, to fan into flame His presence in our lives. Thus, we started praying in faith, Come Holy Spirit! Come and teach us to pray, teach us to love, teach us to worship, teach us to forgive, teach us to cherish your word, teach us to encourage each other, teach us to share our faith, teach us to be bold and stand in the truth, teach us to be courageous, and to be kind. Come Holy Spirit and become a flame and not a just a flicker in our lives. A flame that helps us to grow.

When we lived in our

previous home, we put a beautiful fire place that I really loved. I especially loved starting the fires. Man, do I miss my wood fireplace.

I loved starting fires in there and blowing into those sparks and seeing the flame burst forth.

Today we are told to be fanning into flame the fire of our relationship with Jesus and

in turn the flame of His Spirit begins to grow.

When we do this the flame begins to heat up our hearts, and then it begins to spread to our families, our churches, and our community.

It is a wonderful experience

to feel the presence of God in such a real way. So keep praying, worshiping and growing in your knowledge of the Bible, and keep looking up. Yes, as I mentioned last week, God is indeed on the move! Until next week, God bless.

SUDOKU Fun by the Numbers

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
