Things your mom never told you

I’ve got a newsflash for the naive among us: your mom didn’t tell you everything. This comes with the territory of motherhood.

I’m talking about real lies about important things. Listed here are some of the things your mom probably never told you (and probably never will, but you didn’t hear it from me): She sacrificed more for you than you’ll ever know – until you are a parent yourself. Then you will realize and lose your breath at the very thought of it. But you’ll repeat the process because that’s the circle of life.

She never valued sleep before you were born, but immediately after she was tired. She longed for a nap. She couldn’t wait for you to sleep through the night and then when you finally did, she found herself standing beside your crib at 3:00 am, watching you breathe, tears running down her cheeks.

She doesn’t dislike Skittles, Reeses, cheesecake or chocolate chip cookies. She just said that so you could have more. Ditto that for the final piece of bread at dinner.

On the other hand, she wasn’t above hiding the good chocolate.

It was in the cupboard above the fridge – too high for you to reach.

She worries. About everything and nothing. About the important stuff and the inane. She worries about you and there’s no way possible she can ever stop, so try to be patient with her on that end.

When she says, “I’ll think about it,” she probably has already made her decision.

Let me be called anything but practical

Practical. Ugh. That word makes me scrunch up my nose and shake my head like a toddler looking at something she doesn’t want to eat.

I’m far from a toddler, but at this juncture in my life, I do not want to be practical.

Being “practical” feels confining. Why be sensible and pragmatic? Who says? Practical feels like a judge. Or an old lady with glasses at the edge of her nose (with a long pearl chain and a pretty broach on her stiff black collared 1800s dress - my imaginary old lady judge is at least fashionable) looking down at me with a disappointed look and wagging her finger in my face.

Taking more than one vacation in a year? “Now that wouldn’t be practical.” Getting a hot pink crushed velvet sofa? “Now that wouldn’t be practical.” Ditching the sofa altogether and having the living room be a mish mash of eclectic chairs in a circle? “Now that wouldn’t be practical.”

Practical schmactical. Playing it safe feels boring. My time is ticking and in the span of fun I have left, I can’t stomach mundane.

Thankfully I did not marry a practical man. He is wise and smart and keeps me tethered, but he also is fun, creative, and playful.

When we met, I had a condo with a desire for a chandelier in

every room. For those rooms that didn’t, I had chandelier ornaments.

My Prince bought me a wall sticky chandelier for the bedroom and I knew he was The One. When we moved from that condo into our first house together, I thought we would keep the decorating sort of low key and blend with the woodsy surroundings. It didn’t take long until we were blinging it up with gorgeous lighting and fun paint colors. Tasteful, elegant, whimsical, and not practical.

Even with words and swirls painted around the kitchen soffit and a castle on a hill painted on our bedroom wall, the house still sold first go. (They painted over everything.) When we then moved into a condo, we made it a stunning show place. Yet no matter how pretty we made it, it was too small for me. Move after just one year? That’s not practical.

The current joy house is lovely.

We’ve been here over a year now and keeping it neutral and practical makes my skin crawl.

We are looking at patterned carpet for the stairs that is absolutely not practical. And feels so good.

We ordered a huge birdcage chandelier for the foyer. I’m skimming magazines for kitchen colors to add some zing. We’ve got wall décor ideas floating about.

I need wowee wow. FYI – wowee wow is not a synonym for practical. I prefer to be impractical. You know what a synonym for that word is?

Idealistic. If I had to choose a label, I’d wear that one with pride.

When I kick off into the Great Unknown, my gravestone will be blinged out (I have seen cemetery plots with twinkle lights), and my eulogy will NOT read: She was a practical gal.

No thanks.

The desire for more pizazz is palpable. Beauty feeds my soul.

Nowhere did a philosopher ever state “Keep thy home neutral for eventual resale.”

Lively surroundings energize my spirit. Creativity in my house matters because I spend a lot of time here. It’s time for more personality. A little oomph. Some enchantment.

Make my home romantic and pretty and personable and cheerful and imaginative and fanciful when I do not know how long I will stay there? “Now that wouldn’t be practical.”

Thank god.

Weekly Connection Our family farm wasn’t much for hogs on the homestead. My mom thought they were too stinky and my Dad really didn’t have any experience with them. Everybody was happy without the experience of raising any little porkers… until I got a bright idea during the summer going into my senior year of high school.

Here’s how it went down. One of my friends raised pigs for his FFA project, and he had some baby pigs to sell. I thought to myself, wouldn’t that be cool to raise a couple of pigs! So I asked my Dad if he thought I could buy two of them. “What is your plan for these pigs?” Dad asked.

Well I hadn’t really thought too much about a plan, but I came up with one real quick. I told him my plan was to raise them in one of our calf hutches until they were big enough to run behind the heifers and steers out in the

feedlot. Out in the feedlot they would find plenty to eat from what the other animals wasted or couldn’t digest.

Thus they would grow big and fat without a lot of investment in feed. When they were big and fat, I would either have them butchered or sell them at market. Dad wasn’t so sure, but after a little coaxing and arm twisting, he relented.

It was quite exciting as I brought these two little pigs home to the dairy farm on that bright sunny day. The farm had never seen anything quite like it. Everyone gathered around and helped me shoo them into their new home; an unused calf pen made out of plywood.

We studied them and admired their little smiley faces and long snouts, which sniffed about at everything in the pen. Each morning and night when I fed the baby calves their milk and grain,

I would pour some milk into the pig’s trough too. Then I would pour in a heaping scoop or two of grain and watch them devour it in seconds. They ate like, well… little pigs, and soon they were gaining weight and outgrowing their little calf pen. It was time to turn them loose in the feedlot.

The first couple hours in the feedlot things went pretty smoothly. They explored, and dug around the corners scavenging up all the food they could find to eat.

Everything seemed hunky-dory so to speak.

That evening, however, when

I finished up my chores in the dairy barn and was heading in for supper, I saw the two of them standing at the corn crib munching big mouthfuls of ear corn. I hurried over and herded them back into the feed lot. It didn’t take me long to discover a broken board at the bottom of the fence that they had pushed through, and so a few minutes and several 16 penny nails later, the hole was fixed and I went in for supper happy that I had taken care of the problem.

The next day, however, there they were eating at the corn crib again. Oh no, I thought, what now? Again, it didn’t take me long to discover a second hole in the fence. After chasing them in, I fixed the second hole. Well, as you can imagine, this went on day after day as my chubby friends just couldn’t get the taste of corn out of their minds, and escaping out of the lot at every possible place

they could. Finally, my Dad told me I had to do something with those pigs. They were wasting way too much ear corn, and making a muddy mess near the crib.

Guess where they ended up for the final couple months of their lives? They went right back in the plywood calf pen. It was perfect because they couldn’t get out, and they got plenty of milk and grain for finishing. When the day came to haul them to market in the spring, they weighed in at nearly 275 pounds each. Needless to say, there has never been another pig on the home farm since those days back in 1980.

Proverbs 21:5 says; good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty. Thankfully my hasty shortcuts didn’t bankrupt the farm, but it did strain my relationship with the family for a while.
