Change of seasons and birthday fun

I saw a great picture that showed a guy standing outside in the sunshine all bundled up in his winter coat, scarf around his neck, and a hat pulled down over his ears. Below the picture are these words, what 45 degrees feels like in Wisconsin in October.

The next picture shows that same person in shorts and a t-shirt enjoying that same bright sunshine and below that picture are the words, what 45 degrees feels like in Wisconsin in March. It is amazing how one’s body becomes adjusted to the seasons of the year here in the northland. It only took a week but most of the snow has disappeared across the fields and in our yards. It has been quite a change on the landscape in such a short amount of time.

I was talking to some people at church about this amazing phenomenon of the change of seasons and we realized that just because we live in Wisconsin, we have an endless supply of conversation material on just the weather alone that most people who live in other states don’t have. We thought it was pretty great that we had so much to talk about concerning the change of seasons;

the melting snow, the birds chirping, the geese flying around, the smells of thawing soil, and much, much more.

I have some family who live in Arizona and honestly, it just seems that the weather is just way, way too boring there. I can only imagine that the conversation between friends after church there would go something like this; “Well, it’s going to be warm and sunny again today just like it has been the last two hundred eighty days or so.” That’s it, conversation over. That just sounds rather ridiculous to me.

Next week during this change of seasons we will celebrate my Mom’s 85th birthday. My Mom grew up in a family of nine children in Northern Indiana. Her Dad worked in the steel mills and her Mom was a homemaker.

A few things this family had going for them was love, happiness, and faith in Christ. Whenever we got together over the years there was always lots and lots of laughter and genuine joy. Mom was number eight out of the nine children and was kind of everybody’s favorite, I think. Her siblings have told stories over the years of Mom’s great feats of athleticism and daring that really endured her to her brothers and sisters. Because of the influence of her five brothers Mom never backed down when playing ball with us after chores in the front yard. She was a tough competitor as we say in sports.

Even though she could be pretty strong in that way, she was always very tender and warm. I guess she was pretty well balanced in life and very

confident that the Lord was close to her at all times.

I couldn’t be more thankful to have been blessed with a mother like her.

There are eight of us kids, and we have also been blessed to give her and Dad thirty-one grandchildren, and now some forty-five great grandchildren with more on the way I am sure. The Bible has much to say about God’s blessing on those who fear him. I love Psalm 103:11. “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.” Mom is loved by God because Mom has been faithful to God and has given her life to Jesus Christ in service to him and others. Thanks for a great legacy, Mom and happy 85th. Until next week, God bless.
