HUD awards over $116 million to help end homelessness in Illinois Federal grants to help a total of 380 homeless assistance programs statewide

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded over $116 million to support new homeless programs across Illinois.

Amount awarded reflects an increase of nearly $7 million from the awarded last year and is among the top three awarded across the nation.

Last month, HUD also announced nearly $102 million in grants to renew funding to 325 of local homeless assistance programs throughout Illinois. Combined, this funding represents a record investment to support state and local efforts across the nation to reduce and end homelessness.

HUD Secretary Ben Carson made the announcement in Akron, Ohio last week during a visit to the Battered Women’s Shelter, a HUD-assisted local program that houses do-

mestic violence victims who are at risk of homelessness.

“Today we make another critical investment to those persons and families living in our shelters and on our streets,” said HUD Secretary Ben Carson. “These new programs will join those already on the front lines in their communities working to end homelessness.”

“In Illinois, we have made great strides in reducing overall homelessness by over 26% since 2010. This new funding is critical as we work collaboratively to eliminate homelessness as we know it across the state,” said HUD Midwest Regional Administrator Joseph P. Galvan.“ HUD grants support a broad array of interventions designed to assist individuals and families experiencing homelessness, particularly those

living in places not meant for habitation, located in sheltering programs, or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Each year, HUD serves more than a million people through emergency shelter, transitional, and permanent housing programs.

HUD continues to challenge state and local planning organizations called “Continuums of Care” to support their highest performing local programs that have proven most effective in meeting the needs of persons experiencing homelessness in their communities.

Many of these state and local planners also embraced HUD’s call to shift funds from existing underperforming projects to create new ones that are based on best practices that will further their efforts to prevent and end homelessness.

33rd Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition results The results are in for the 33rd Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition! The winning teams were announced at an awards ceremony last Saturday at Sinnissippi Park in Rockford, Illinois. Windy City Snowmen team of Kim McCombs (Captain), Mike Dillon, and Juan Zelaya won the 33rd annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition with their sculpture titled “Lincoln.”

Windy City Snowmen will also advance to the 2020 U.S. Nationals Snow Sculpting Competition in Lake Geneva, Wis. In all six state teams, 15 high school teams, and one exhibition team (the winner of last year’s Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition) participated in the Feb. 6–9, 2019 event.

4 slices bacon, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch-wide pieces 3/4 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 3/4-inch pieces 10 ounces (about 4 cups) farfalle (bow tie) pasta 2 1/2 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 3 cups baby spinach leaves 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes, for garnish Place removable pan inside programmable pressure cooker. Using saute function, cook bacon, uncovered, until crisp. Use slotted spoon to remove bacon from pan. Drain bacon on paper towels. Leave 1 tablespoon drippings in pan; discard remaining.

Add chicken to bacon drippings in pan in two batches. Using saute function, stirfry chicken 2-3 minutes, or until cooked through. Use slotted spoon to remove chicken from pan. Repeat until all chicken is cooked. Press cancel.

Stir pasta, broth, garlic, Italian seasoning and pepper into drippings in pan. Secure lid and set pressure release to sealing function.

Select high pressure setting and cook 5 minutes. Press cancel.

Allow pressure to release naturally 5 minutes. Move pressure release to venting function to release any remaining steam. Remove lid.

Stir cream into pasta mixture. Using saute function, cook and stir, uncovered, until boiling. Boil, uncovered, about 4 minutes, or until sauce generously coats pasta, stirring frequently. Press cancel. Stir in chicken and Parmesan cheese.

Place spinach and bacon in large bowl.

Pour pasta mixture over top. Toss until combined. Ladle into serving bowls. Top each serving with tomatoes.
