The sad fact is that doping has been going on behind the scenes for decades, and while Russia is currently the target of investigations, chances are Russia is just the top of a much bigger iceberg.

If I sound cynical, it’s because I’ve become increasingly so growing up.

Like many my age, I came to age during the 1980 Moscow boycott by the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. boycott of Los Angeles in 1984. In both those boycotts, the athletes – the ones

who really matter – were the ones who suffered. A political statement was made at the expense of the competitors, and it’s becoming increasingly clear little has changed.

Now, though, it’s just different statements made by different people – with the athletes expected to stand down and just compete. Voices deserve to be heard, all of them.

By continuing to play politics, in one way or another, around sports, athletes and humanity as a whole will gain no ground, and the world learns nothing new.

Early to bed – Early to rise

Since I retired from teaching almost five years ago, I have really enjoyed my small dairy herd of 35 cows. It has been pretty much everything I thought it would be. The satisfaction of completing the chores each day, experiencing the cycle of life on a regular basis, driving tractors, skid loaders and old trucks has brought a great sense of achievement each day.

The only trouble is that caring for the cows, calves and heifers pretty much ties a person to the farm both physically and mentally every day of the year. Even if someone comes and gives you a milking off or a couple days off, you pretty much are thinking about the cows while you are

away and all the responsibilities that are awaiting you once you get back to it. Teaching and being a head coach of one or two varsity sports is very equivalent by the way.

On the farm I’ve found that the best way to find a little free time in the evening is to get on an early schedule so that you can be done with the milking before it gets too late each night. The problem is one has to get up mighty early in the

morning to make this work, and when it’s 20 below zero getting out of a warm bed is a chore in and of itself.

I remember years ago my brother and I would set our alarms for 3:00 in the morning.

The only way to start early at night is to start early in the morning because when one is milking two times a day it is best to milk on a 12-hour schedule.

We wanted our evenings freed up because we had things to do, places to see, ballgames to play and girls to date. One day I recall we were done early enough to run into the hardware store in town after the evening milking before they closed up at five o’clock. The store owner was wondering if we still had

There are two types of people in this country: those who have a car and those who don’t.

There are good reasons for living on each side of the roadway. People without a vehicle often live in areas where public transportation is the norm and street-space is not.

If you don’t have a garage or a driveway, you might have to pay for parking on a daily basis. That adds to the cost of car ownership, which is no fun.

Multiply that if you have to drive around the block multiple times in search of an open space.

Parking aside, the act of driving on populated roadways requires a special skillset.

I traveled to New York City a few years back and saw this firsthand. The space between cars on all sides of the vehicle while traveling at 30-plus miles per hour is mere inches, and that is no exaggeration.

It takes an especially talented, level-headed and barbaric person to dare to navigate such treacherous conditions. I may be barbaric, but not that talented or level-headed.

Give me black ice and the most white-out snowstorm in memory. I’ll drive through it with a confidence instilled by four-wheel drive, a good set of snow tires and decades of experience navigating blizzard conditions.

But bumper to bumper traffic with the possibility of road rage in the mix? I’m opting out, thank you very much.

Still, I’ve lived all my adult life with a vehicle to call my own. I didn’t live in New York, or any other highly populated

area where taxis trump personal transportation. I was rural, and rural demands a car of your own.

I always had one. At least one.

Until recently, when I found myself 1,500 miles from home, in a new home. My son and I moved across country with his car. Thankfully it got us here in one piece.

Then the problems started.

The car wiggled when accelerating. It coughed up disturbing noises when making a sharp turn. One tire habitually went flat. The vehicle got us from point A to point B, but it didn’t feel right. It felt very, very left. We brought it in for diagnostics and, while opinions differed between mechanics, one thought rang consistent: It was time to get rid of the car.

In a word: Ugh. Then life happened. I won’t bore you with the details, but in amidst of life happening, I went about six weeks without a car. Luckily I had a bike and a backpack. It’s amazing how many groceries you can fit into a small space when you are hungry.

I also blessed the gods for delivery of bulky items like toilet paper and cat litter.

So, as dire as I make it seem, it wasn’t. It was only irritating.

But irritating gets old quickly.

Especially when irritating denies you access to the super store, or, worse yet, the dollarpoint-two-five store, which it now is, if you’ve done your research.

Never mind eating, It felt as though my crafting days were over.

But back to the bike. The bike saved me. It got me from here to there, and I even figured out how to fit a frozen pizza into a backpack. That is no small effort.

I decided to embrace the adventure. I was able to bike to the grocery store in the middle of a January winter. I haven’t been able to make that claim to fame for most of my life, so why not look on the bright side. Yes, leaking chicken juice into the back pack was not a desired outcome so rotisserie chicken was probably out of the question.

But I had other options. I figured out the frozen pizza backpack challenge. I also figured out how to find a new (used) car.

It was another adventure, which I conquered successfully I now have reliable wheels - two on a bike and four on a little SUV. I can head to the superstore and fill my cart with a mega pack of toilet paper, a couple of rotisserie chickens and as many frozen pizzas as my heart desires.

Life is good.

the evening milking to do. He just about hit the floor when we told him we were all done already.

When you’re on a schedule like that you had better be able to grab a nap sometime during the day or you are going to be dragging before too many days.

Milking is basically at minimum a 14 hour a day job and that’s why so many young people didn’t want to stay on the farm.

It’s not that you are necessarily working that many hours each day, but you have to be there at the beginning of the day and then you have to be there at the end of the day some 14 or 15 hours after you started.

Today’s modern dairies, however, milk three times a day and have many workers and regular time off, but in the old days it didn’t work like that.

The other day I noticed that a

couple of my jerseys who were first calf heifers were starting to get very very thin and were losing milk production rapidly.

I couldn’t figure out what was going on, but I did notice that these girls were trying very hard to lick up any snow they could get their long tongues on.

I should have figured it out sooner, but I missed the obvious clues. Finally, I decided to move them to another shed and see if I could feed them more.

When I let them off the trailer they hustled over to the drinker and drank and drank and drank.

As I was watching them with wide eyes and open mouth, it finally dawned on me that perhaps they weren’t using the drinker in the barn. I walked back to the barn, and sure enough when I put my hand in the water I felt a little shock of electricity. It didn’t bother the bigger Holstein cows, but those

little jerseys would have thirsted to death before they would drink. I found a rusted heating element and replaced it. Lo and behold the problem was solved.

Soon these cows were back to eating, drinking, milking and gaining weight again.

When these cows were getting so thin, I actually had prayed and asked the Lord to help me figure out what was wrong with them. It was the Lord who directed me to move them to the other shed, and that’s where I finally figured it out. Sometimes it seems the Lord has to smack us over the head with a two by four before we see what’s going on.

Psalm 86:15 says, But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious. You are slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth. I’m sure glad God is patient with me.
