Restoring an old tractor and the coming of Christ

My brother recently visited from Louisiana for a couple weeks. He has been living down there since the early eighties doing ministry. He married a native American girl many moons ago and has been the pastor of the church there for decades on the reservation where she and her family lives.

He also runs a small Christian School at his church and even does a little farming on the side.

When he came to Wisconsin last week, he wanted to finish up a project that he started a couple years ago that involved taking the only brand-new tractor my dad ever bought when we were kids and restore it.

I can still remember the first day that bright red Farmall International 706 tractor arrived on the farm in Indiana. I was only four years old back in 1965 when my dad made the purchase. I was watching from the ground as Dad

Well, last week he did it and now that old tractor is like brand new. When I hopped up on her seat again a couple days ago, I was immediately taken back to the first time I sat up on that seat as a four-year old on my dad’s lap and steered her down the lane years ago.

I remember lots of other things when I was a boy as well. One of the things I remember vividly from sermons our pastors used to preach was how God was getting ready to send Jesus back to the earth.

They explained it as a twophase return, first to snatch up the believers to heaven in something called the rapture as described in I Thessalonians 4:16-18 as well as other passages.

The second part of His return is after the great tribulation explained in the book of Daniel and in Revelation as seven years

of deception that turns to wars, famine, pestilence, and death for millions, and we think it’s bad now. The seven years begin with a false hope for the world but ends very badly.

Finally, Jesus returns to the earth to put an end to the chaos and carnage. At that time, He will finally become the earthly king that the 12 disciples thought He was going to become back the first time He came. The thing was He had a different agenda the first time. He came to show us how to live and bring salvation by His death and resurrection.

The next time He comes He will fulfill the other prophecies of the Old Testament and become the earthly king. The disciples were confused because they didn’t see the other prophecies of His suffering and death to bring salvation that had to happen first.

Because of His death and resurrection, for 2,000 years we have seen the birth and

life of the church and now the church is ready to be called home. Even though I heard the warnings as a boy, I never thought I would see the world change into what it has become so rapidly.

The final pieces of Biblical prophecy are falling into place at breakneck speed, and Jesus is now ready to come for His church. Are you a true believer who understands that your salvation is by grace and not of your own works?

Ephesians 2:8-9 says, For it is by grace you have been saved through faith.

It is the gift of God, not of our own works so that no one can boast. I trust you will not shrug this message off today but investigate for yourself if what the Bible says is really true. Eternity is a long time to be wrong, so I urge you to get right with God today. I’ll be praying for you.

I was an early proponent of online shopping. I lived in a rural community without much access to retail, so it was a natural fit. I even experimented with grocery purchases when it was a new and novel thing. I wrote about the crazy packaging practices of my delivery orders back in 2017. Yes, I was that cutting edge.

I didn’t make online grocery shopping a habit.

I preferred to pick out my toilet paper in person.

Then COVID hit in early 2020 and all our worlds – and shopping habits – changed, perhaps forever.

E-commerce had already established itself in our daily lives, but COVID cemented it there. According

They wear the company uniform and a smile and they get the job done, all so we can order toilet paper and have it delivered free with two-day shipping, even on weekends. Even on Sundays.

Since when do we need our laundry detergent or area rugs delivered on a Sunday?

Since now, supposedly.

These good people work without the benefit of tips (at least that I know of). I hope they get incentives and bonuses, but I’m not sure.

They deserve all three. I’m not sure how often people let them know they are

appreciated and their work is valued, but we should.

Shame on us if we don’t.

In that vein, I have one message for them: Thank you.

Thank you for all you do.

Thank you for working early in the morning and late into the evening just to make sure my new bedroom pillows arrive on time. Thank you for making sure I get my granola, pesto sauce and cat treats well within the estimated delivery window.

Thank you for making our lives easier, during the pandemic and probably after, if an after ever comes. Thank you for carrying the heaviest packages inside my door because it would be hard for me to do that by myself.

Thank you for providing a rescue to many during a difficult time for us all.

Thank you isn’t enough, really, but it’s all I have, and it’s delivered from the heart.

I see what you’re doing. I see how hard you work. I see the long hours that are required of you. I see that you may be taken for granted and I’m sorry for that. I see how much you benefit us all from simply “doing your job.” I see, and I hope others do as well.
