Remember to vote this election

Another election is almost upon us, and it is being hyped as one of the most important elections our country has ever held.

The first election that I can remember when I was about seven years old was the presidential election of 1968 when Republican Richard Nixon defeated Democrat Hubert Humphrey in a close race.

When it was over Nixon had been elected the 37th president of the United States. He won again in 1972 with an absolute landslide victory over George McGovern. Nixon amassed 520 of the 538 electoral college votes that year as the country was elated that he had helped bring an end to the war in Vietnam.

Just two short years later in 1974, he resigned over the Watergate Hotel wire-tapping incident, and he became the first president to ever resign from the highest office in the land. I remember as a little boy seeing how sad our President looked announcing to the country that he was resigning. Vice President Gerald Ford stepped in and took over for the final two years before losing in 1976 to Democrat Jimmy Carter. Politics have fascinated me ever since.

This year’s election is not a presidential election so why is it considered to be so important? I believe there are several reasons. I would say our country is once again at a crossroads. There seems to be two distinctly polar opposite views of which direction our country should go these days.

The sad part is that there isn’t much respect for opposing opinions in our society. Instead, there are all out attacks from one side to the other and vice versa

on every issue. It’s too bad that the issues aren’t just explained clearly and truthfully so the voters can make up their minds which way to vote.

There is so much deception going on that it is hard to sift through it all.

Even with these problems, we are still so fortunate to be living in a free country with a representative government. This simply means that our elected officials vote according to the wishes of the majority of the people in the district they are representing.

There are major issues to consider this year when one goes into the voting booth such as where each candidate stands on the importance of being energy independent and just what are the implications of going green.

There are also issues around the use of what is called fossil fuels and socalled man-made climate change. There is also the issue of whether or not we should support the police in our society, and of course the rights of the unborn verses the rights of the mother. All of these issues are important as pertaining to the direction we are headed as a society. But which are the most important?

When I look at these issues, I ask myself what determines the direction I vote. What standard do I measure the morals that our society should live by? For me it is the Bible. The Bible is the book that our

intelligent awesome creator of the universe wrote through human authors that give us instruction and laws for a decent and just society.

Our second president, John Adams, once said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” He also said, “I have examined all religions, and the result is that the Bible is the best book in the world.”

The Bible tells us that it was God’s plan that mankind should live as nations of God-fearing people practicing His rules in society. It also teaches that everything should revolve around the fact that God created life in the womb, and that He expects humans to nurture and protect it from those who would destroy it. Psalm 139:13-14 reads, For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

To me there isn’t another

issue that carries more weight than a person’s view of life in the womb. I hope that we can all agree to spend some time praying for the upcoming election that God would help this nation become a Godfearing nation once again. Until next week, God bless.
