The weekly connection

My uncle took the lessons of D-Day to heart

I always thought this person was the toughest man in the world. He was incredibly strong and willing to undertake any mechanical project that needed to be done.

During the week he worked as a supervisor at Inland Steel Mill near Gary, Indiana.

On the weekends, however, he was busy helping others. There were cars and trucks aplenty in his shop and he was right there fixing them. There were brake jobs going on, a carburetor torn apart, some welding to do, or even a major engine overhaul underway.

You see Uncle Don had a large number of teenage nieces and nephews who were just learning to drive and we needed his help.

When we had a special project to do on the farm as well, he would come right over after work or on the weekend to mastermind it. He once redesigned and created larger iron paddles to replace each and every one of the smaller blades on our old shuttle stroke Jamesway barncleaner. I still can see him welding away making paddle after paddle. It was a remarkable improvement to say the least. Now it only took about forty-five minutes to clean each side of the barn instead of ninety minutes or more on each side. Later he designed and engineered some huge tie rods and metal plates attached to the outer walls of our barn and running completely across the width of

the haymow that saved the huge building from collapsing. They are still in place today supporting that barn and giving it a firm and stable structure.

My Uncle Don lived in northwest Indiana where my parents were born and raised. I spent the first 10 years of my life there as well. Once when I was older and living in Wisconsin by then, I drove down to Chicago with friends to watch a Bulls game. As we were heading home my car mysteriously stalled right there on Madison Street outside the Stadium in a not so nice part of town. I called Uncle Don late that night and sure enough, he hopped up off the couch, grabbed his hat and toolbox and headed an hour and a half up the road to help his needy nephew. He towed me home to his house that night, about sixty or seventy miles in Chicago traffic using a t-bar between our two vehicles. He was able to diagnose the problem, get the part and the next day, I was heading for home after a wonderful home cooked meal by my Aunt Irene.

I had the privilege of taking a trip with this man to the Grand Canyon and back when I was twenty-three, just the two of us.

As we drove mile after mile in my five speed Ford Thunderbird, we talked, laughed and snacked on food that my Aunt had sent along.

Don that very few people ever saw and a guarded side as well. You see he was a survivor of World War II and the horrors of D-Day when American troops invaded France at Normandy Beach on their way to stop Adolf Hitler and the German army. Uncle Don was a medic. It was his job to treat the wounded and and rescue the dying from the battlefield. He told me that day that there were twentythree men in his company when the army rifts hit the shoreline.

By the end of the day there were only four left. Nineteen of his buddies and fellow comrades had been shot and killed. The rules of war say that your enemy is not supposed to kill anyone with a giant red cross on their back, but that didn’t stop the Germans.

After he told me about that day in 1944, my uncle got very quiet as we drove along, and I saw him crying. I cannot imagine the sacrifice, pain and heartache that so many of our veterans and their families have had to endure to preserve the freedom and liberty we hold so dear here in this country. I am so thankful for our vets and that all gave some and

some gave all so that we could live here in the USA, the greatest country that was ever created. It is my prayer that we will never forget that here in America, we proudly cherish our veterans and we unashamedly put our trust in Almighty God. Psalm 9:10 “Those who know your name trust

in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.”

Thank you to all who served in our great military. We owe you a great debt and thank you Almighty God for establishing this country and helping us to thrive. Turn us back to you, I pray. Until next week, God bless.

Slices of life

Nearly a decade ago, my 80-year-old dad sensed quiet and a lack of activity upstairs and felt a worried edginess creep under his skin. He headed up the basement stairs and was about halfway toward the top when the doorbell rang. Standing outside were his neighbor and my mom. The neighbor found her wandering next door, on his driveway, appearing lost. She had her purse, but wore only slippers on her feet. Although it was December in Minnesota, she had no coat. When the neighbor asked what she was doing, she told him she was just going home.

When the neighbor pointed toward my mom’s own front door, she showed no recollection of familiarity. She looked at the building and saw a strange house, not home.

Home. It’s a concept we all understand. Everyone wants a home to go to. A place to call one’s own. A place to feel safe. Home is a comfortable haven.

Even in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, my mom understood the concept of home.

Going home

And, she knew with certainty she wanted to go there. Trouble was, she was technically home; she just didn’t recognize it. To this day, that knowledge breaks my heart.

Alzheimer’s is a disease known for robbing one’s memories, but it takes so much more. Memories constitute our concept of family, friends, life, home – the things that make us who we are.

My mom understood to the very core of her being that she needed to go home, but she didn’t know how to get there. The nice elderly gentleman she found living with her (my dad and her husband of 49 years) couldn’t seem to help her. So, when he wasn’t looking, she grabbed her purse and exited out the front door, looking for a location that didn’t exist– yet did exist all at the same time – which is about as illogical and confounding as Alzheimer’s.

The situation became unsafe and we found a new place for her to live. It was beautiful. It was safe and the people there were equipped to provide the care she needed. We called it her new

Some people think of themselves as stuck in the mud at middle age, feeling as though they’re going nowhere after their children have grown up, graduated and moved on.

These people could be suffering from a “midlife crisis,” a wellknown term for what some health professionals believe is a real psychological affliction, not a cultural myth. Studies show a high percentage of adults over the age of 50 have experienced a period of emotional turmoil in middle age in which they have a strong desire for change.

Sandra A. Miller (www.SandraAMiller.com), author of Trove: A Woman’s Search for Truth and Buried Treasure, thinks those suffering from a midlife crisis can overcome it by turning this time of restlessness and confusion into an adventure that can open positive pathways for the rest of their lives.

“The greatest thing you can do

for yourself is to live the life you were meant to live,” Miller says.

“Finding that life often requires an external adventure, but it first requires an internal journey to peel back the layers to discover who you are, what you want, and where you want to go.”

Psychologists say symptoms of a midlife crisis include the fear of aging and a longing to feel and act younger. But that doesn’t mean the answers are always found in quitting a long-held job, buying a convertible, or ditching the spouse for a love interest who’s far younger — as depicted in some movies and sometimes seen in real life.

“Many men and women in midlife are struggling right now with what I call a crisis of the soul,” Miller says. “They might have achieved the many trappings of a successful life, but they still don’t feel fulfilled on a deeper level.”

Miller offers three keys to shifting the mindset and taking a midlife adventure:

NOTICE TO ROCKTON TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS CONCERNING SNOW REMOVAL Winter has arrived – is it here to stay? No one can say for sure, but not to worry, because the Rockton Township Highway Department is prepared to start their snow removal season and we wanted to share some information with you so that we can do a better job of cleaning snow from our roads in a timely and economic way.

Rockton Township is dedicated to doing the best job of snow removal possible, within the restraints of reasonable cost. By its nature, there will always be someone who is plowed first and someone who is last. We operate on routes designed to best utilize our equipment and to give the fastest economic service possible. Conditions, such as when snow starts and stops, how wet or deep, and/or how windy, all effect the timing, method, and success of removal. There are times when it is impossible to make progress and we may have to delay starting or pull off the road. And there are times and conditions where we may only plow to keep roads open. Your understanding and cooperation is very important to our efforts. With the best planning and efforts, there are still things that go wrong. If you need to report special problems, please call 624-7177. Snow crews can operate all hours of the night, so patience and understanding can go a long way. Here are some specific issues you may need to deal with from time to time: OBSTRUCTIONS: Some residents like to landscape their yards close to the roads. You should be aware there are rather deep right-ofways in front of all homes, Which the homeowner does not own. These right-of-ways serve many purposes including allowing crews to push snow off the pavement several feet to make room for future snowfalls. Damage to any obstructions (railroad ties, boulders, posts, cars, etc.) on the right-of-way will be the responsibility of the homeowners, as these obstructions are in violation of State Statutes.

MAILBOXES: Winter is hard on mailboxes. By their nature, they are in conflict with efforts to clear snow from the roads. There are times, under difficult winter conditions, when we may knock down a mailbox. If the mailbox is properly located and maintained, Rockton Township will replace these damaged mailboxes with a regulation box (sorry, no fancy replacements). Each property owner is responsible for the condition of their mailbox and the approaches to them. Poorly maintained mailboxes may be lost to conditions other than damage by a plow. The homeowner is responsible for all damage other than a plow striking their mailbox.

DRIVEWAYS: An unavoidable result of plowing snow is a ridge of snow along the road at the end of driveways. Operators do what they can to minimize this when possible. You can help yourself. Piling the snow you shovel off your driveway to the right side (the side away from approaching traffic) will minimize the snow ridge on your drive.

CUL-DE-SAC is a wonderfully peaceful place to live, but you will have to pay an additional price for your privacy. They are difficult to plow and cause many problems for the homeowner. Please be understanding of the additional problem they cause for snow removal crews.

STUCK VEHICLES: Please do not ask or expect us to assist in pulling out stuck vehicles. We do not accept the liability nor do we have the proper equipment to do this. You should be prepared to call a local towing service should you get stuck.

For those of you who are newcomers especially from cities or southern states, you should make yourself aware of differences in conditions, in removal methods, and in responsibilities. There are a number of government agencies responsible for roads in Rockton Township. They include the State, the County, the Village and the Township. Knowing who to contact for a road problem could help expedite any problems you may experience. Rockton is also still a rural community which may dictate harsher snow conditions for both the resident and the snow removal crew. Your proper preparation and driving techniques will help avoid problems for everyone. Please slow down and drive carefully during adverse conditions.

Determine what you’re looking for — and don’t be shy about it.

What have you wanted to do for a long time but for various reasons have not? “Many of us think we should be grateful for all that we have and keep quiet,” Miller says.

“But in our life journey we also have to explore our desires and what they might be showing us. If not, what’s the alternative? People need to be real about what they feel is missing, and why, in order to get the most out of the rest of their life.”

Break rules. “Too many people conform to the rigid boundaries created by their self-limiting doubts or fears,” Miller says. “And sometimes we never take action on our dreams, never cross those lines because we’re afraid of what others may think or how it’s not conventional. Essentially, we impose rules on ourselves that shouldn’t apply, so we need to break them in order to break through. To have a big, creative life, you’re going to have to break some rules. And it’s never too late to start doing that.”

Live in the moment. “Living your life in the moment every day while being mindful of your adventure means being fully alive — observing, absorbing, and appreciating constantly,” Miller says. “There is so much to search for, but sometimes we go looking too far for it when discoveries are all around us.

With the constant distractions of our phones and social media, now more than ever we need to stay awake and alert to the beauty that is there if we just look up and take notice.”
