Thanks to the almighty powerful fast internet and the ease of PayPal and dexterity of skilled fingers, I now have two adorable pumpkin hats. If you want to take a walk with me, you can use one.

Because of the outreach ability of the internet and apps, I joined a walking challenge. 30 minutes a day for 30 days straight. There are prizes at the end and I am very confident I’m going to win. This challenge is not about pace or distance or calories or weight. It’s simply to commit to walk outside, rain or shine, to breathe fresh air for 30 minutes every single day. The organizer is able to see via the app that I have walked every day. Easy peasy.

All this to say, to myself, (and you if you are like me) relax and let go of the judgement.

When I see groups of young people out to dinner and they all are on their phones, I make comments to my dinner companions and pass judgement when truly it’s none of my business.

If your family of four goes out to dinner and no one looks up until the food comes, none of my business. If you walk down the street with your nose down in your phone, none of my business. Your life, none of my business.

Last night out to dinner, we saw a mom holding the phone in front of her toddler and they were doing Facetime with Grandma. I thought what a joy for faraway folks to be able to connect, to hear each other and see each other.

Back in the day, some people thought the telephone itself was an unnecessary invention. Then it became the easy way to stay in touch. Let’s roll with the changes and be grateful for what we can do and how we can stay in touch. And now I’m going to post pictures of my pumpkin hats.

Many people, myself included, sometimes complain about the incessant internet and our need to always check social media. I’m able to go unplugged now most weekends and it feels good. My life and business have not experienced backlash because I don’t post photos of pretty trees, or share uplifting quotes or groan-worthy jokes.

I love the internet. I cannot live without it. My livelihood takes place across the world wide web.

I talk via zoom to clients in Canada, Costa Rica, and all across the US. My tech guy lives in Asheville, I’ve had VA’s in Colorado, Utah, Ohio, Kentucky, Canada. We do everything over the internet. It is an amazing blessing.

We all dig it. If we don’t recall the name of something, someone whips out their phone and looks it up. It’s not just the young things, it’s all ages, including my parents and their generation.

Instead of bemoaning the time spent on social media, I realize it’s not up to me to judge other’s habits or boundaries. If you want to post every random thought that crosses your mind, have at it. If you want to stay off social media entirely, wonderful. To each his own.

I’ve decided to celebrate the connections. I recently posted on Facebook a photo of a knitted pumpkin hat that I thought was darling and whimsical. It was for a baby so I asked if anyone knew where to get

Discovering the joy of Miracle Marula oil By

provide a clue as to the secrets and benefits of this magical Marula oil.

The mystery took an unexpected turn when I checked the ingredients and discovered that despite its prominent placement on the front of the bottle, Marula wasn’t even listed.

Game on.

Despite a lack of Marula, the ingredient list contained 21 items.

Four were dyes. One was water.

That left me 16 to investigate.

Most of them had long chemical compound-type names but a quick Google search showed me their true purposes.

They were substances like detergent, foam booster, surfactant, anti-microbial, thickener and skin conditioner. All logical and expected ingredients for hand soap. But no Marula.

Then I found it – right between a pH balancer and preservative: sclerocarya birrea seed oil, otherwise known on the Google as Marula.

But what was it, really?

Back to my research.

The sclerocarya birrea, a.k.a.

Marula, is a medium-sized tree that grows in the woodlands of Southern Africa, West Africa and Madagascar. It produces small yellow fruit that has eight times more vitamin C than oranges and is considered a delicacy by elephants, giraffes and rhinos – to name a few. Now I understand why elephants never catch colds.

They may, however, catch a buzz. When the fruit becomes overripe, the animals continue eating it and experience a Marula drunkenness that one has to see to believe.

Imagine an intoxicated elephant stumbling across your path. Gives a whole new level of excitement to the idea of an African safari.

The oil of the Marula comes from the seeds of the fruit. It’s used in cooking, cosmetics, as a meat preservative and to treat leather so putting it in hand soap could

fulfill double duty – depending on how leathery your hands are. Then again, if it has preservative qualities perhaps your skin benefits trifold.

Marula oil is touted as having powerful antioxidants, nutrients, omegas, essential fatty acids and the vitamin C referenced above.

It’s an anti-aging, hydrating, skin repairing powerhouse – according to one website that’s selling the stuff for a hundred bucks an ounce.

Ouch.

It isn’t always that pricey. You can find it online for a fraction of that cost. Or you can simply buy some liquid hand soap for a couple of bucks.

Either way, it beats going all the way to Africa and getting trampled by a stampede of inebriated elephants.

The little pump dispenser sat on the sink in my bathroom for more than a month before I noticed the label. I hadn’t read it at the store; just pulled the liquid hand soap off the shelf and threw it into my cart without paying much attention.

Hand soap is hand soap, right?

It turns out I hit the jackpot with my random choice of product. Like I said, I didn’t notice right away.

But when I did the words on the label became impossible to ignore: Miracle Marula oil.

Wow! I was in possession of Marula oil (of the miraculous kind).

How could a person get so lucky? I did a little happy skip right there in the bathroom. But then my brain went to a place that sort of changed everything.

I thought, “What the heck is Marula oil?”

I’d never heard of it. To think I lived my entire life without ever crossing paths with Marula oil. I wasn’t sure whether I should be embarrassed or glad I was finally discovering this miraculous substance.

I had to know more. I thought maybe the rest of the label might

There will be no out-of-pocket expense if you are covered by Medicare Part B (please present Medicare card) or a Medicare HMO accepted by FHN (there’s a list available at each location; covered persons MUST present the Medicare HMO card instead of the Medicare card for the billing process).

All immunizations not covered by Medicare or a Medicare HMO must be paid for by cash or check payable to FHN. The prices shown here are only available at these flu shot clinics; other rates may apply in FHN offices.
