Slices of life

When it comes to driving, I’ve always allowed my husband to take control of the wheel. Sitting in the passenger seat is so much easier than differentiating the brake from the gas pedal or driving between the lines, so I figure I’ve gotten the better end of that deal. But with driving comes the other “D” word: directions.

When you are driving, you are the person in charge of directions. You must know where you are going and when to exit Interstate 10 and head north.

I have always been fine with that.

Directions meant effort and thinking and reading a map and knowing east from west. I thankfully relinquished directions decades ago. I consult the map when requested to do so, but my husband has always had the better head for geography.

In the past, when we’ve traveled across the country, we utilized the cutting edge tool known as the atlas.

It was huge and large and mappy, mapish or maplike - take your pick.

Each page spread contained one state. As we traveled from north to south (and vice versa) I’d turn the page from Wisconsin to Illinois to Kentucky and (quickly) to Tennessee. I’d count the numbers on the page to see how many miles it was from Madison to Springfield, adding the mile markers in my head.

I’d tell him I thought the best route looked to be Highway 55.

quicker way, which he’d mapped out the previous night. I’d ask, “Highway 47 or 62?” He’d pick which one and away we’d go.

He was the driver. I was his shotgun-sitting sort-of navigator.

It took some effort, but we always got from point A to point B. Mostly on time. We were a semi-welloiled machine, or at least a married couple traveling in a semi-well-oiled machine.

We still travel, but things have changed.

First off, I’m still sitting shot-gun, but I’m not longer chief navigation co-pilot. My husband has a new woman for that.

Her name is Siri, and holy heck she is boss.

Siri will not take anything other than her own opinion into consideration when mapping out a route. If she says Highway 65 and my husband believes it should be Highway 35, Siri is relentless. She is boss and is 100 percent sure she knows the quickest route. Because she does.

It drives my husband crazy.

She’ll say, “In 13 miles, take

But he doesn’t. He insists on taking Highway 45; but I’m on Siri’s side.

A perfect fall This has been about the most perfect fall that a person could ask for. My wife and I have just been overwhelmed with the beauty of the colors this year. To top that off each day has had just about the ideal amount of sunshine to make it one of the most excellent falls we have seen in a long long time.

The harvest of the crops and gardens has been excellent all the way around as well. Yesterday, a family from church came by, and we enjoyed walking around the farm together. We have several kittens, and they were tussling around in the sunshine as only kittens can do.

The dogs were chasing each other around the yard. The heifers were grazing on some clover in the pasture and the calves were lying in their stalls enjoying the fluff of fresh straw underneath their bellies.

After a while we ventured over to the garden and picked some of the last of the tomatoes, brussel sprouts, beets and kale. Our friends filled a plastic shopping bag to the top with produce. It was a wonderful little visit to say the least.

In my sermon at church yesterday I spoke a little about a movie that we showed last week to our youth on our big movie screen.

Christ. The true-life story depicted the former atheist, Lee Strobel, and how he came to believe in Jesus.

It was set back in the early ‘80s when Lee began earning awards as a distinguished reporter with the Chicago Tribune. He and his wife, Leslie, were devout atheists who were part of the intellectual elites in the journalism field there in Chicago.

Something dramatic took place in their lives one evening when they took their young, six or sevenyear-old daughter, out to celebrate her birthday. The daughter asked if she could go over by the door and purchase an exceptionally large gum ball from a machine where they had entered.

Her parents consented, and Lee and Leslie were sitting at the table chatting when after a couple minutes their daughter, Alison, suddenly walked up to them with a look of panic and horror on her face.

They realized she was choking, but neither of them nor anyone around them knew the Heimlich maneuver and so they began to yell for someone to call 911. They were hopeless and thought for sure that their daughter would soon black out and die.

At that moment, a lady came to their table, announced that she was a nurse and began performing the children’s Heimlich maneuver on their daughter. It worked and out popped the gumball and in a matter of moments the situation went from sheer terror to tears of joy and hugs and thank yous galore.

Leslie was crying and hugging the lady thanking her when the lady said calmly, “oh, it’s all because of Jesus.” “You see,” she said, “My husband and I both felt a strong urging that we should stop and eat at this restaurant tonight instead of the one we were planning to go to.”

Her words stuck in Leslie’s mind and she could not stop thinking about God from that moment on.

She had to know more.

After meeting with this dear lady and her hearing about God’s plan of salvation, Leslie gave her heart to Christ. She believed and received the Lord Jesus as Savior and Lord. Her life changed dramatically from that moment on, a change that her very elite intellectual husband was none too happy about.

So, for the next several months, he tried to make life a living hell for her. He ridiculed her. He harassed her. He stayed out late and came home drunk. He tried almost everything, but was not able to

shake her, not one little bit. She had become a new person. While all of this was going on, he was secretly investigating Christianity.

He had to find some way to convince Leslie that she was giving up her mind. He went to several of his former university professors and asked what he could do to get his wife back. They told him to do what he did best as an award-winning newspaper reporter and writer, he should investigate the issue.

Was his wife’s Christianity real or false?

So that’s just what he did. Someone had told him that all of Christianity rests on the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the fact that Jesus had come back to life after He died. If he could just disprove the resurrection, then Leslie’s faith, her Christianity, would fall like a house of cards.

Lee began to research and study all the aspects of the resurrection, including what the historical writers of the early days wrote. After weeks of investigation, Lee became overwhelmingly convinced that Jesus Christ had indeed been a real person and that He had indeed performed miracles while He was on this earth.

Jesus had been crucified and had died of that crucifixion on a Roman cross. There was no way that Jesus had just passed out. Lee found that there is no record of anyone ever surviving a Roman crucifixion and the fact that when the Roman soldiers came to break the legs of those being crucified that day, they found Jesus to already have died.

A soldier then thrust his spear into Jesus side bringing forth blood and water, which Lee found was also proof that he had died by asphyxiation. In fact, the scourging Jesus had received alone would have left Him in shock and absolutely weakened to the point of being in critical condition. All that was before He had spikes driven into His feet and hands and the cross was lifted up and dropped into a hole in the ground. The evidence of a resurrection was so overwhelming and His wife’s newfound faith so life-changing that Lee fell to his knees before the God of the universe. Lee believed and then received the Lord Jesus into his heart and became born-again.

Since that time, he has authored a great number of books about the truth of the Bible and how God wants to give us the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

In the gospel of John 1:12 we read; for as many as receive Him, to those who believe on His name, have become the children of God..

As they say, it’s not rocket science, it’s a simple act of faith that changes one’s life forever. Why don’t you open up your heart to Jesus today and be born again by faith in His name?

If you have ever planted pumpkins, you may have been overwhelmed with pumpkins like Rebecca Estelle in the children’s book, Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White.

While her pumpkin problem was not her fault, in real life, deciding on how many pumpkin seeds to plant is a challenge. I always plant more than one seed per hill. Traditionally, a few seeds will not germinate. However, there are times when they all germinate; the weather is perfect; and the pumpkins take over.

Depending on the pumpkin variety, one pumpkin vine will produce, on average, between two to five pumpkins. Three hills with three seeds each can produce up to 30 pumpkins. That is a lot of pumpkins for one family! Check out Too Many Pumpkins to see how Rebecca Estelle handles her pumpkin problem.

• The largest pumpkin pie was baked on Sept.

Did you know that the lines on a pumpkin are called the ribs? The greater the number of ribs on a pumpkin, the more seeds that are inside! This fall when you are carving pumpkins, let your kids or grandkids, guess how many seeds are inside before you open it.

For the younger ones, divide the seeds into groups. It is a fun way to practice skip counting (10, 20, 30…). You will be surprised how high the kids will count!

Casting your vote safely during a pandemic

With the Nov. 3 election fast approaching, and the world still in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to make some considerations to stay safe while exercising your right to vote.

Voters in Illinois and Michigan have several ways to vote – absentee by mail, early voting in person or in person on Election Day. Lori Grooms is the director of infection prevention for OSF HealthCare.

She says anything in person should come with the same checklist as other errands and activities outside of the home.

“You’re going to want to follow the exact same things,” advises Grooms.

“You’re going to want to make sure you have your mask with you, your

hand sanitizer with you; when you get out of your car, put your mask on and keep it on until you get back in the car; before you go in, clean your hands, when you come out, clean your hands.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created a guide for election officials and voters alike, to slow the spread of COVID-19 while ballots are being cast.

While many of the CDC’s recommendations are the responsibility of poll workers, like cleaning and disinfection voting equipment, voters can also take steps to keep themselves safe while voting.

Grooms agrees, and suggests going to vote during off-peak times, such as mid-morning. She also recommends giving yourself plenty of time to moni-

tor the voter line from your car and join it when it’s shorter.

“You may want to wait until some people come out, especially if the line is long and outside the door. Just take your time. Plan for possibly being in the parking lot and waiting for 20–30 minutes if you live in an area where there is a lot of voting, or if you live in a highly populated area,” suggests Grooms.

Along with wearing a mask, physical distancing is also important to maintain while voting in person. Long lines might make this difficult, but Grooms says don’t be afraid to politely advocate for space.

“You want to make sure you keep that six foot distance,” she said. “You can remind others that, ‘I would appre-

ciate if you would back up a little bit.

I’m trying to maintain my space.’”

Grooms continued, “It is your own health. It is your own safety. You don’t need to be rude about it, but you can let people know, ‘I’m doing this for your protection, and for my protection, and it would be best if we have some distance between us.”

Voters should also do their homework before Election Day. The CDC recommends checking your voting location and requirements in advance because they may have changed due to COVID-19. You should also verify your voter registration information is correct in advance of reporting to the polling location.

Grooms adds where possible, voters should review or complete a sample

ballot at home to speed the process of casting your ballot at the polling location.

“You can log on to the Illinois State Board of Elections, and go in with your determination made. This is not the year to go and look at the ballot and then determine who you want to vote for. Really know what your intent is as you go into the election. That way you spend less time and you’re able to get in and get out much quicker,” Grooms recommends.

Voting is one of the greatest democratic rights Americans have. Lyndon B. Johnson famously said of voting, “This right to vote is the basic right without which all others are meaningless. It gives people, people as individuals, control over their own destinies.”
