Beyond grief, because life goes on

At first, grief seems overwhelming because it is. It almost kills you, quite literally, and I don’t feel good admitting that. But it’s the truth.

At first life goes on without you. Beside you. Away from you. Apart from you. Very, very distant from you.

Everyone around you is going and doing and laughing and living, while you are grieving. They are kind and polite, but most of them aren’t quite sure what to say or do.

I used to be one of those people. And then grief hit me like a freaking atom bomb.

In the first days of grief, you struggle to breathe. To eat. To sleep. To survive, and you aren’t even sure you want that. You’re not sure you belong here anymore.

You no longer fit in.

But, life goes on.

One day you notice you are breathing without having to think about your breath flowing in and out. The air is nourishing your body without conscious thought.

You find that you are able to sleep again. Not all night, but enough to make it worthwhile.

Your appetite isn’t fully back, but you eat because it is the healthy thing to do, and you want to keep yourself healthy.

You start a journal to

Weekly connection Last Sunday I was able to attend a little ceremony at a local park that honored my father-in-law for his military service with a beautiful patriotic quilt to commemorate his time in the army as an airborne soldier.

I was asked by the family to write up a little history of his life for the surprise ceremony.

Now I had heard a lot of his Army stories over the years, but I didn’t have a good grasp of the details where I could put together a detailed account.

I needed to interview him without his realizing what I was up to. It just so happened that about a week before our “interview” my dad and fatherin-law were both at our house for one of our granddaughter’s birthdays and they had engaged in a long conversation about their similar military experience.

Even though neither one of them ever served in live combat, they both had been through the standard two years of rigorous training in the army.

I had overheard some of it, but I needed more details. A couple days later I called my father-inlaw and told him that my dad had some more questions about his service, and I needed more details. It worked perfectly.

So here’s a shortened version of my write-up about the military service of Richard J. Schliem, US Army 1953-55.

After an exciting and illustrious high school athletic career in South Wayne, Wis., Richard J. Schliem graduated in 1951. He then enrolled at the University of WisconsinPlatteville to study to be a science teacher and to continue his love of athletics on the football field as a Pioneer.

Soon after, however, Uncle Sam began knocking on the door. Dick understood that

the instructions he had learned.

He was, however, brought back to awareness when his 30-foot parachute flew open above him and slowed down his freefall to the earth. He will never forget the first two words that came out of his mouth at that moment. “Thank God!” he gasped as he came to his senses.

Dick made five jumps that first week including a night jump in which he injured his leg and ankle on impact because he could not see. Over the next year and a half, he made seven more jumps for a total of 12 leaps of faith.

He served for two full years until he was discharged in October of 1955 and then just a few months later in May of 1956 he married Carol, his wife of 65 years. He says he wouldn’t trade his time in the Army and the training he

received for anything in the world.

He didn’t want to enlist in the beginning, but he’s mighty glad he did just for the life-building experiences and especially for the friendships he made including one his very best friends through the years.

In 2017, Dick had the chance to ride with the group from Beloit and surrounding communities called, VetsRoll.

The group consisted of about 200 military veterans and chaperones who accompanied the Vets by Coach bus all the way to Washington D.C. It was a wonderful trip as the Vets were honored all along the highways and through the cities by flag waving patriots who

wanted to honor these great men and women.

In D.C. the group visited many of the memorials and other sites. Then they all returned home full of even greater love and appreciation for this great country. We thank Dick and all the veterans who served to keep the United States of America as the land of the free and the home of the brave.
