Beautiful sky and a trip to KC By

are ready to eat whenever I get near them. I’m actually getting ready to move them to a field where they can work the corn stalks throughout the fall and winter. Then when the snow flies, I will throw hay out on the field for them to eat. It’s amazing how a beef cow can get fat on grass and hay while dairy cows will shrivel up and starve if they don’t get some corn.

The drive down to KC was quite enjoyable. The first couple hours in the dark I sang along to some great worship songs. There is something about the early morning hours and worshipping the God of the universe. The Bible says in Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” They sure do! I never saw such a perfectly clear starry sky as I drove down through Iowa on my way toward the Missouri border. I nibbled on an apple I had picked from my apple tree out in the yard

and thought about how David, the shepherd boy, must have looked up at the same sky and stars when he wrote those verses.

It’s exciting to think that one of these days Jesus Christ is going to return in the skies as He promised in John 14:3 when He said, “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am there you may be also.” There isn’t any clearer verse about the rapture of the church in all of the Bible than this one from Jesus own lips. Now I know the idea that Jesus will come in the sky and Christians who have died along with Christians who are still alive are going to be caught up into the clouds and receive new bodies like Jesus received after He rose from the grave, seems kind of wild. The fact is the Bible tells us that this is indeed what is going to happen. There are many examples of people being raptured throughout scripture. Cain’s son Enoch, who was Noah’s great-grandfather, was taken

by God to heaven without dying. Then there was Elijah, who went up in a fiery chariot.

The Apostle Paul was taken

up to heaven and returned to earth. He wrote that he saw things too wonderful to express in 2 Corinthians 12.

John was caught up to heaven too in Revelation 4:1, and of course Jesus Himself ascended to heaven right in front of the eyes of his disciples. God is very capable of lifting up millions to be escorted to the wedding ceremony of Jesus.

The Bible says the church is His bride, and just before God’s wrath comes upon this earth, He is going to come and get us. When one’s heart understands these truths, it brings an overwhelming joy into one’s lives. As the Apostle Paul wrote in Titus 2:13, “Looking for our blessed hope the glorious appearing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

In such an evil day in which we live, I get pretty excited about this promise from God’s word. If you want to know this blessed hope and the sweet peace and assurance that comes from believing in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, just take the step of faith and receive Him today. The Bible says in John chapter 1 that to all who receive Him by believing on His name will become children of God. Until next week, God bless.

Fall is a season of such beauty but it also brings me a little sadness. Spring brings hope after a cold winter.

The slow turn of summer to fall gardens, outdoor projects, long days of sunlight and feeling strong.

The shorter days and cooler temperatures remind me that I’m growing older. Unfinished tasks wait for another year as my list was bigger than my ambition. The summer that seemed to last forever when I was young passed by like a blink of the eye.

While our temperatures this year still give us a taste of summer, nature knows what’s coming. The barn swallows, our annual seasonal avian tourists that fend off the

mosquitoes, have been gone for a couple of weeks. The old dairy barn, their favorite nesting place that echoes with chirping all summer, is quiet.

The wooly bear caterpillars are moving about, although I have yet to examine the amount of black on them.

Folklore says the longer the black bands, the colder, snowier and more severe winter we will have. I’ll worry about winter another time.

Last Tuesday night I set my alarm for 4 a.m. so I could get up early and head to Kansas City to pick up my daughterin-law and the kids who were coming back from a visit with her parents and family down in Texas. Her parents had driven up for a visit, and they had decided to leave their truck here and take their daughter and the kids back down to Texas to visit for a couple weeks. The plan was for my daughter-in-law’s dad to drive them all the way back to Wisconsin to pick up his truck at the end of their visit. I suggested that perhaps I could drive his truck down and meet them somewhere to save him a lot of extra hours on the road.

Sure enough, he took me up on the offer and when the day came, I awoke a half hour before my alarm rang, rolled out of bed about 3:30 a.m., put on some warm clothes, grabbed a flashlight, and went outside in the pitch black to feed my beef cows, sheep, and chickens before I left. I was amazed at how fast the beef cows came running to the feed bunk even though it seemed like it was still in the middle of the night. The pasture is getting a little thin and they

are likely travelers heading south.

We have yet to be nipped by frost, although it will be coming soon. We’re enjoying the late-season tomatoes and soon will be harvesting what promises to be a record squash crop, along with a few pumpkins that will welcome

visitors at our doorstep.

It seems like the apple crop is a bit lighter this year, but I’m holding out on the harvest, hoping that my son and grandson, my cidermaking partners, will show up for a fun day of pressing.

I also will relish the beauty of fall and be thankful for the

creator of such a diverse and colorful world. It’s a reminder that change is a constant part of our world.

But the thoughts of work undone and regrets remembered had me a little down one morning last week.

Dawn was slowly creeping into the valley and I was

outside for a morning chore.

It was faint at first, so I stopped to listen, just to be sure.

Much to my surprise, I heard the call of a whippoorwill.

“Whip-poor-will, whippoor-will.”

The call that conjures

warm summer nights floated across the valley.

Whippoorwills also are migratory and spend their winters in Mexico and Central America.

But one still remained.

Perhaps it too was sad to see summer fade away and was saying goodbye.
