All are guilty of making snap judgements

We make instant judgements about so many things, dozens, even hundreds of times each day – what we approve of and like, but more often, what we disapprove of and dislike. These can be time-honored judgements: things we’ve lived with for years, if not a lifetime.

I’m not sure why we feel the need to impose snap judgements, but I know I am as guilty as anyone. I’m not here to point fingers. I’m here to provide a mirror for all of us. To illuminate not only the judgements we make toward one another but those we impose upon ourselves.

Awareness is the first step to curbing negative thoughts and allowing others – and ourselves – a hefty helping of grace.

Please read these with honestly. No one is looking over your shoulder or reading

your thoughts. Consider your initial impression when you encounter: A person wearing pajamas at the grocery store. (Really?)

That same person who is accompanied by kids without shoes. (Parents these days!)

A cloudy day when the forecast called for sunshine. (Who pays those meteorologists anyway?)

A slow check out line at the super store. (How’d they ever hire her?)

When you don’t get the job you applied for. (I don’t interview well. I’m not that smart.)

Teenagers and the way they dress these days. (No respect!)

A young mother or father with tattoos. (How does she/ he pay for them?)

An unexpected car breakdown, on the freeway during rush hour. (Dammit I just had it into the shop last week!)

Forgetting your wedding anniversary, or your mother’s birthday, or some other significant date. (I’m so stupid about dates.)

Someone using food stamps at the grocery store.

(That’s where my taxes go!)

Someone’s dirty car.

(People don’t take care of their stuff.)

That neighbor who purchases a brand new car every year. (What’s he trying to prove?)

Your neighbor’s brown grass. (Lazy.)

Your brown grass. (I’m lazy.)

A child throwing a tantrum in a fancy restaurant when you are celebrating your birthday. (This is wrecking my day.)

Your sour mood after a bad day at work. (I’m no good at my job.)

Your sour mood after a fight with your spouse. (I’m no good at marriage.)

The list could go on. It’s human nature. We have the tendency to judge everything.

Honestly it makes me a little sad; It took no time at all for me to come up with the above list. We judge others and ourselves so quickly and so harshly.

I’m trying to change this in myself. It isn’t easy, because judging is so ingrained into our human psyche. Instead of judging, I’m attempting empathy. It’s the whole “walk a day in their shoes” thing. To start with, I’m walking a day in mine.

And in doing so, I’m trying to change the inner voice that I’ve been listening to for far too long. Not judging others starts with not judging ourselves. If we can learn to be easier on ourselves, then

maybe we can also learn to give others the benefit of the doubt.

We are all walking the path of life, and we are all doing the best that we can with what we have. Realizing the truth of that one sentence can change outlooks; it can change lives. When we judge ourselves or others, whom does it benefit?

In a word, no one.

Be kind. I’m in your corner. Find someone you care about and be in their corner and we’ll all make the world a better place. One judgement (or hopefully lack thereof) at a time.

Two harvests are better than one

The crops sure look good around here this fall despite the limited rainfall we had during the summer. I remember when we got our first combine when I was just a boy. It was a shiny red 303 International with a 12-foot grain head and a two row corn head.

We thought we had died and gone to heaven. That combine was a huge step up from the old Cockshut with the mounted two-row corn picker. That 303 combine was

just amazing as we could get so much more corn picked in a day. In fact, there were many years where my dad was out in the field with the old corn picker and sheller long after Thanksgiving and

into December. Before we got that combine, we would fill the corncribs with ear corn and when they were full we attached the sheller to the picker to fill the grain bins with kernels.

It was our goal each year to be done with the corn and beans by Thanksgiving, but it didn’t always happen.

Once we bought the 303, it was much easier to meet that goal, but not a guarantee even though we only had a couple hundred acres to harvest.

That first combine didn’t have a cab on it, so when Dad was doing beans he would come in from the field with a very thick coat of dust and dirt on his face, neck and arms. I used to stand there and watch him wash up at the laundry tub in amazement to see if it was really him under all that grime. The soapy water turned pure black as it dripped down his face and arms.

It was incredibly hard for us boys to sit in school in

the fall when we knew Dad was home during the day cutting beans or picking corn.

So, when the bell rang, we sprinted to the bus in a mad dash to get home quickly and help.

Like many farmers of that day, my dad had lost a finger down to the second knuckle in the old corn picker. It was his ring finger on his right hand. As a boy I remember how that stubby little stump of a finger made for a pretty fun toy to play around with in

church when I was bored.

My cousins and school friends would ask him how he lost his finger, and he sometimes would joke around and tell them that a cow bit it off. Sometimes he would fool around by sticking the little nub of a finger up to the side of his head and pretend that it was jammed way inside his ear. The reaction of my friends was priceless as the illusion looked so real. It was

Ladle up a warm and hearty soup this fall As the days cool, autumn cooking starts to heat up. If soup hasn’t yet been on the menu, then now is the time to explore new recipes that can warm us up from the inside out.

Soup can be customized with flavors that evoke the spirit of autumn. Ingredients like pumpkin, warming spices like cinnamon and cayenne and peanut butter come together in this recipe for “Vegan Pumpkin Peanut Butter Soup,” courtesy of The National Peanut Board and Abra Pappa of “Abra’s Kitchen.”

Vegan Pumpkin Peanut Butter Soup Serves 10 • 2 large leeks, sliced • 1 tablespoon coconut oil • 8 cups fresh pumpkin puree • 1 cup creamy peanut butter • 4 cups vegetable broth • 14 ounces coconut milk (1 can) • 2 teaspoons salt • 2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder (or 1 teaspoon cinnamon) • 1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Toppings: Sriracha sauce Vegan coconut yogurt Fresh roasted pumpkin: Purchase a “pie pumpkin” (also called

a “sweet pumpkin”), which are typically around 2 to 4 pounds. On average, each “pound” will yield about 1 cup of pumpkin puree. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the pumpkin in half lengthwise. Use a sharp spoon or ice cream scoop to scoop out all seeds and strings (reserve the seeds for roasting). Drizzle the pumpkin with olive oil, salt and pepper. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place the pumpkin halves skin side down. Using the tip of a sharp knife, carefully place a few slits in the skin of the pumpkin. Roast in a 375 F oven for 40 minutes to 60 minutes. It will entirely depend on the size of your pumpkin. Remove from oven and allow to cool. When cool enough to handle, scoop out the flesh and set aside.

Pumpkin soup: In a large pot over medium-high heat, melt coconut oil. Add sliced leeks and 1⁄4 teaspoon salt. Sauté for 5 to 8 minutes or until leeks are soft and creamy. Add vegetable stock, pumpkin puree, peanut butter, coconut milk, and spices to pot. Stir well to combine, and allow to simmer for 15 minutes. Working in batches, add soup to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth, return to pot and taste for seasoning adding more salt if needed. Serve with a drizzle of sriracha and a spoonful of vegan (plain, unsweetened) coconut yogurt.

pretty funny. I thought my dad was pretty cool.

The harvest time has sure changed. Now the combines are massive and roll over the land picking hundreds of acres a day. We used to use little gravity flow wagons to haul the shelled corn to the bin, now the semis roll past our place all day long in the fall as the crops are hauled into the grain elevator. The good weather this fall has allowed for a great start to the harvest that’s for sure. Most of the beans are out of the fields already, and the corn isn’t far behind.

Jesus talked about grain and the harvest several times in the scripture. He wanted His followers to realize how important it was to help others find the pathway to God the Father. Jesus was living proof that He was God’s great plan providing eternal life in heaven after

we die for all who believe in Christ.

He is the God of pure love and He doesn’t send anyone to hell, people send themselves there by not believing and receiving the Lord Jesus into their hearts for salvation from their sins.

Yes, salvation can only come to someone who admits that they are sinners and are separated from a holy and perfect God. Our only hope is faith in Jesus Christ. Yes, there is a harvest of souls out there that need to hear this good news. Won’t you believe and receive Christ today?

Then find a Bible and start by reading the gospel of John.

As you begin to understand God’s truth and grow you’ll want to be sure and share this wonderful truth with those around you.
