The stats show we don’t stick to New Year’s resolutions. We are too vague: “I will lose weight” or “I will get in shape” or “I will lose ten pounds” need an ACTION plan to go along with it. That’s the part we are not so good at.

To lose that ten10 pounds say you resolve to “exercise more.”

That’s still too loosey goosey.

Committing to working out three times a week is better and even that needs to be plotted out: I will go x day at x time. Schedule it.

When you see the commitment on the calendar, it becomes real.

You still may slack off, but seeing the reminder again and again increases your chances that you will exercise more often.

Another way to do resolutions is to pick a word for the upcoming year.

Instead of “I resolve to get out of debt” (which also requires an action plan of paying more than the minimum on the credit cards and cutting back on the splurges), you pick a WORD (or a phrase) to be your “accountability buddy” for the year.

Choosing a word is easier on our heads and hearts than resolutions.

It seems softer perhaps, but can be even more powerful.

For example, let’s say you want less debt. You could resolve to “manage money better” and create an action plan on how to do that. Or you can pick a work to hold you to task. The “task” is something you desire, something your heart wants. What words feel good around that desire?

You can choose DEBT-FREE if that feels good. You can choose FINANCIAL FREEDOM if that resonates. You can be specific and set a number you want to have in savings at this time next year: $5K. You can choose another goal word or strong anchor word that will help you manage your

Fighting the battle against carpet stains

It was a simple spot on the carpet. Well, if we are being honest it was three spots on the carpet, but who’s counting?

They weren’t the only spots you’d spot on my carpet – if you were looking – but they were in a public spot. Obvious to any visitor entering the living room. Sadly, they’d taken up residence for quite some time. It wasn’t due to lack of diligence on my part. I’d tried carpet spot and stain remover on a few occasions and all that seemed to accomplish was to make the spot disappear for a short time only to return bigger and bolder within a few days.

My spots kept reinventing themselves by performing a reappearing act worthy of Houdini.

They were persistent little buggers, I’d give them that. I might have been proud of them, had they been something other than a spot on the carpet. I enjoy magic and value persistence – in people, not carpet stains.

My work thus far had not yielded the results I wanted. It was time to get tough – to eschew the commercial cleaners and go rogue.

I went to my go-to: Google. Lots of blogs have lots of advice about stubborn carpet stains but many of them had a common thread: baking soda and vinegar.

Grilled Chicken Shawarma

Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 16 minutes Servings: 8 1 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt, divided 5 teaspoons McCormick Gourmet Organic Shawarma Seasoning, divided 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon McCormick Gourmet Sicilian Sea Salt 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast 4 pita pockets, halved 1 medium seedless cucumber, thinly sliced 8 lettuce leaves

In small bowl, mix 1 cup yogurt and 1 teaspoon shawarma seasoning. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

In small bowl, mix oil, lemon juice, remaining yogurt, remaining shawarma seasoning and sea salt. Reserve 2 tablespoons of mixture; set aside.

Place chicken in large re-sealable plastic bag or glass dish. Add marinade; turn to coat well.

Refrigerate 1 hour, or longer for extra flavor.

Heat grill or skillet to medium heat.

Remove chicken from marinade. Discard remaining marinade. Grill or saute 6-8 minutes per side, or until cooked through and internal temperature reaches 165 F, brushing with reserved marinade.

Slice chicken into thin strips. Serve in pitas with cucumber, lettuce and yogurt dressing.

1/2 pound multicolor carrots, washed and peeled 1/2 cup shelled roasted pistachios 1/2 cup dried cranberries 3 cups baby arugula 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese In large bowl, mix mint, pomegranate juice, honey, harissa seasoning, sea salt and pepper. Gradually add oil while mixing with wire whisk until well mixed. Set aside.

Trim carrot ends. Slice each carrot lengthwise into ribbons with vegetable peeler or mandoline. In medium bowl, toss carrots with 1/4 cup prepared dressing. Stir in pistachios and cranberries.

Arrange arugula on serving platter. Drizzle with remaining dressing and top with carrot mixture. Sprinkle with feta before serving.

Prep time: 5 minutes Servings: 8 (2 tablespoons each) 1 cup labneh (yogurt cheese) 2 teaspoons McCormick Gourmet Organic Za'atar Seasoning, divided 1 tablespoon olive oil pita bread, for serving (optional)
