Weekly connection

Have faith as we sail through stormy seas I have an old tractor on my little farm. It’s a 1953 Super H, Farmall.

Now back in the day, it seemed like every farmer had a Super H. They were a very versatile little 32 horsepower tractor that could be used for all kinds of work.

I love this little tractor because it’s mine. I bought it off an old widow lady in Beloit and it worked nicely to help me run my vegetable stand when we lived near Clinton, Wis. I plowed and disced my one-acre garden plot, and I used it to pull my vegetable wagon around. I had an eight-foot sickle mower and I mowed along the ditches east of town as well.

A problem occurred last year because I didn’t realize the radiator had become very clogged up over the years. One day it got hot on me and blew the head gasket. Water and anti-freeze started coming through the exhaust by way of white smoke and then pretty soon the spark plugs stopped firing because they were saturated with antifreeze and water.

I have a friend who loves to work on cars so I invited him over and together we unhooked a myriad of bolts, clamps and covers and pulled the head off to see what we could see. Sure enough the head gasket was shot. I got busy and ordered new parts from an antique tractor website.

I also took the radiator to town to be fixed and for several nights we installed the new parts and worked at getting everything in place to put it all back together. Wouldn’t you know that every time, we thought things were ready to go a new problem came up.

First, we had an oil leak because of a bad o ring, then we discovered leaky radiator hoses, then it was a bad battery, followed by the starter going bad. We started to get a little discouraged as our faith in our mechanical abilities were being severely tested. We began to wonder if we were ever going to make this thing run again. Ultimately, we kept the faith, and finally, with a rebuilt starter in place, a rebuilt radiator, new radiator hoses, oil and fluid levels ready, and a new battery we pulled the starter lever and away she

fired. Soon she was purring like a kitten.

I hopped on and took it for a test drive around the barns and you know when I got back to the shed, I felt absolutely on top of the world. Our confidence and faith in our abilities were given a huge boost because of all the trials we went through, and you know what? We are now ready to tackle my Dad’s Super MTA, which hasn’t run for about 20 years.

You see in order for our faith to grow, it must be sown in the ground of trials. In other words, we must take root in the soil of faith in God and His word even as we are going PUZZLE 1 through all kinds of trials.

The Lord gives us trials to strengthen our faith so that we can provide hope, strength and even nurturing to the people God sends our way.

James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

I find it very interesting that as soon as Jesus finishes teaching and challenging the people and His disciples about their faith in Mark chapter four, He takes them right into a severe trial. They leave the crowds, climb into a boat and are crossing to the other side of the lake to go share more teaching about faith in God with more people, and it looks like all is well.

There they are sailing along chatting about faith like a mustard seed growing into huge mustard plants when all of a sudden, a storm like they had never seen pops up out of the blue. I can just kind of picture Jesus dozing off to sleep with a little smile on His face because He knows what’s coming and how the disciple’s faith is going to be strengthened in a

relief, Though my tears flow all the night long?

Does Jesus care when I’ve said “goodbye” To the dearest on earth to me, And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks—Is it aught to Him? Does He see?

Here’s the answer…

Oh, yes, He cares, I know He cares, His heart is touched with my grief; When the days are weary, the long nights dreary, I know my Savior cares.

Well Jesus cared. He loved His disciples dearly and He wanted their faith to be strong. He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace be still! And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

But He said to them, why are you so

fearful? How is it that you have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, Who can this be that even the wind and the sea obey Him! My friends we are in a world of stormy seas. We are in a world that has lost its moral compass. We call evil, good and good, evil. Unless there is a miracle, we are about to be moved into a world of even greater moral confusion. I don’t know how all of the details will play out in the days and months ahead, but I know where our faith must be rooted.

There is only one hope for this world and that is for us to turn back to God and put our faith in the Lord Jesus.

If you are feeling overwhelmed remember to trust Him and watch your faith grow.

Slices of life

No one knows what tomorrow brings

You can’t plan the way your life unfolds. Oh, sure, you might think you have an idea, but you never know what tomorrow will bring.

The wind blows in a different direction and suddenly you are living a truth you never planned.

You are face to face with something you never let yourself imagine. You find yourself dealing with a loss so great it is unfathomable.

You walk around in a fog. The days unfold slowly one by one, and your plight is multiplied by the existence of COVID and the reality it has created for all of us. In many ways we are all living a reality that we never would have let ourselves imagine.

Each of us thought we had a path planned for the future, but that path is gone. That’s how 2020 unfolded for many of us. It’s how it unfolded for me.

It was like a storm that came out of nowhere. I never imagined it or saw it coming. How did I miss the signs? They must have been there.

They had to be. How did they get past me? How did I go wrong?

What more could I have done?

There’s guilt. The guilt of not seeing. The guilt of not knowing.

The guilt of surviving. The guilt of being the one still here.

didn’t want to see it. He was young and healthy. Surely he could beat something, especially if it wasn’t cancer. It wasn’t cancer. My hope continued.

Because of COVID only one visitor was allowed at the hospital, and I had to leave by 6 p.m. The nights must have been so very long for him, too full of too much time to think. He must have been so alone and so scared.

There are things I wish I would have said, conversations we might have had, but that would have meant I knew it was possibly the end, and I understood he didn’t want that to be my reality. So I held his hand and sat by his bed.

Even though I think at some point he sensed the truth, He didn’t want to share it with me because he knew I’d be devastated.

I am devastated.

Yet, I have hope because he isn’t gone. Not really. Oh, sure, he’s no longer walking this earth as a physical human being, but he is by

my side.

He is everywhere and nowhere.

He surrounds me; sometimes I swear I can feel him holding my hand. He used to playfully call me a squirrel because of my tendency to flit from one thing to another. I talk to him often and have reminded him about the squirrel. I believe my future will be full of squirrels scampering across my path, and I’ll know exactly who is behind that clever joke.

Sometimes life is hard. But it isn’t over. It is possible to overcome adversity, even if that is with a tiny flame or perhaps even a spark. My fire will burn again. Or I will die trying.

Sometimes losses in life feel overwhelming because they are.

I have lost you here on earth, but I haven’t lost you. I never will.

Our love is something created by something bigger than either of us.

It was a love for all time. It was sweet. It was true. It was never questioned. It was as unconditional as you can get in this imperfect world. And now, we are separated, but our love bonds us forever. It continues to grow despite of and because of our separation.

We were imperfectly perfect, but we did it together, and somehow that made it perfect. We loved in

COVID-19 vaccine: ‘The benefits outweigh the risks’ Since it breached the shores of the United States in early 2020, COVID-19 has killed nearly 390,000 people across the nation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts that number could swell to 477,000 by early February.

However, there is a ray of hope, shining in the form of two COVID-19 vaccines, which have been approved through emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Rollout of both vaccines has started, and some of the most common questions surrounding the shots involve side effects.

According the FDA, side effects may include injections site reactions, headache, muscle pain, chills, joint pain and fever. Dr. Victor Chan is an Emergency Department physician for OSF HealthCare. He says he and many of his coworkers who received the shot experienced just that.

“The second shot – I think going into it we anticipated some mild side effects, and the reports of the fatigue, some headaches and some people would have chills and body aches. That was consistent with what I experienced,” recalls Dr. Chan.

Some of the potential side effects of a vaccine can seem very similar to the symptoms of the illness it’s meant to prevent.

cines work, you’ll know that experiencing a side effect isn’t a sign that something has gone wrong. It’s a sign that your body has launched its immune response, just as it should after a vaccine.

“Some people actually in a weird way felt almost happy and reassured to feel those symptoms because we knew that the immune system in the body was working in the way that it was expected to,” said Dr. Chan.

Other more serious side effects to the COVID-19 vaccine are extremely rare. According to a study released January 6 by the CDC, the risk of a severe allergic reaction from the vaccine is extremely low.

Between Dec. 14 and Dec. 23, 1.89 million people received the shot and more than 99.99% of them did not experience severe allergic reactions.

There is a lot of vaccine misinformation floating around, which could make those number seem scary to the average person. Dr. Chan encourages people to speak to their primary care physicians and do their research, but make sure it’s with a trusted source.

“Social media is always a really easy access point, but places like Facebook are probably not a good source,” he cautions. “OSF has a very easily accessible portal with an area dedicated to vaccine information that has frequently asked questions. And then obviously the

CDC is always a good place, too. So I think it’s important to make sure that we get our information from a reliable source.”

Despite the fact that these vaccines were fast-tracked, it doesn’t mean that they are not safe. In fact, The United States has the safest vaccine supply in its history. And agencies like the FDA and CDC have established systems of clinical trials, monitoring and extended monitoring to ensure vaccines are as safe as possible. This holds true for the current COVID-19 vaccines being distributed.

“Feel confident that there is a lot of science and there is a lot of research that has gone into this. There are a lot of other people that have already taken the vaccine, gone through those symptoms, and some of the potential temporary symptoms and side effects will go away,” Dr. Chan explains.

Dr. Chan says that the benefits to getting the COVID-19 vaccine far out-weigh any risks. He reminds us that we are also looking out for others when we get vaccinated.

“It’s important to remember that the benefits are not only isolated to ourselves, but the benefit and the protection from the vaccine extends to our family members that we may potentially expose, and then hopefully eventually that benefit reaches out to our community as well.”
