Area tree farms are here to assist with a holiday tradition
Other than the birth of Christ, perhaps the most iconic and enduring symbol of the Christmas season is the decorated tree.
For many people, picking out the perfect tree is a daylong event that is rooted in tradition and family fun.
The Christmas tree as we know it began to appear in Germany in the 1500s. The early German trees were decorated with paper roses, apples, candies, nuts and accented with strips of red paper. Then candles were added to light the tree.
Today’s trees take on many shapes, sizes, colors and themes with different arrays of lights and ornaments that are limited only by the imagination.
For many people, only freshly cut pines, spruces, balsams and firs – the trees that bring a distinctive pine scent to your home – will do.
Whatever your customs and traditions, Christmas trees are a fragrant reminder of the season.
Here are four of Spirit magazine’s preferred area tree farms:
Country Side Trees

Bob Livingston of T.P. Trees welcomes all to choose one of their freshly cut trees from an array of Frasier firs, balsam or white pine trees. He advises that Frasier firs are the “Cadillac of Christmas Trees” due to fragrance and needle retention. Balsam is also very fragrant and has a flat needle. White Pine is a basic lumber tree, which also works well as a Christmas tree if you have lightweight ornaments.
Wreaths and boughs are also available.
T.P. Pines will help load trees into vehicles. Prices vary depending on type of tree and size. It is open from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

Simple ways to involve kids in holiday decorating
Millions of people across the globe feel that the holi day season is a magical time of year. Though those people come from all walks of life, it’s likely that no group is as taken by the unique spirit of the holiday season as much as children.
Whether they’re looking forward to Santa’s arrival or preparing for a school holiday pageant, kids have much to be excited about come Decem ber. Parents can channel that enthusiasm by involving kids when decorating around the house this holiday season.
Make ornaments
The options are limitless when making holiday orna ments with children. From simple ornaments made from pine cones picked up outside to more complex projects de signed for children nearing adolescence, parents can look to the internet to find design ideas and directions for hun dreds of ornaments.
Let kids lead
Let kids lead the way when decorating the tree. Families that celebrate Christmas can let kids lead the way when decorating their Christmas tree. Kids are likely to spend the weeks leading up to San ta’s arrival gazing in awe at
the tree, and knowing they decided where to place the various ornaments on it might make the season even more special for youngsters.
Bring the kids
Take kids along when choosing lawn ornaments. It’s not safe to involve chil dren when installing lighting displays, but kids will get a kick out of choosing inflatable lawn decorations and oth er items to place around the yard. Take kids along when buying new items and then seek their input when placing Frosty, Santa and his reindeer friends around the yard.
Get baking
Include kids in culinary decor. Many celebrants can not imagine a holiday season without gingerbread houses and cookies. These traditions provide another great oppor tunity to involve children in holiday decorating.
Set aside some time to make homemade gingerbread houses, which can be used as decorations before they’re ul timately eaten. Cookies may not have the shelf life of a typical gingerbread house, but kids can pitch in and decorate cookies prior to a holiday par ty or family meal.

Though retailers may be gin playing holiday tunes shortly after Halloween, for many people, no date on the calendar marks the beginning of the holiday season better than the day they pick up their Christmas tree.
There are many different ways to acquire a Christmas tree. Some people prefer arti ficial Christmas trees that can be stored and taken out each year. Others make a yearly expedition to a tree lot or a Christmas tree farm to find the perfect fir or spruce.
Historians believe a man named W.V. McGal lard planted 25,000 Norway spruce seedlings at his Mer cer County, New Jersey farm in 1901, essentially estab lishing the first commercial Christmas tree farm.
By 1908, customers could visit the farm and choose trees for $1 each. McGallard helped create an entirely new industry that now accounts for 350 million trees being grown and sold in the United States every year.
Selecting a Christmas tree may not take more than an hour or two, but there are ways for families and other tree shoppers to maximize their time spent looking for a tree.
Bring refreshments
Couple Christmas tree shopping with picnicking if the weather is amenable. Pack some foldable chairs into the vehicle (sitting on the ground on a blanket may be too cold) and bring along thermoses of coffee or hot cocoa. Snacks like granola bars, Christmas cookies or other filling treats can keep everyone satisfied and ener gized while they shop for a tree.

Pair tree shopping with a trip to see lighting displays. Find the tree lot or tree farm and then scope out potential ly scenic spots to view holi day lighting displays nearby.

The school year is underway and the East Troy Community School District still has a need for confident, reliable, dedicated bus drivers to fill our routes for the year. This is the perfect part-time work for retirees, parents (even those with preschoolers-bring them along!), or anyone looking to help the community and make a little money on the side. Last year, we had a few parents step forward to become bus drivers where they found they love driving the bus. Maybe this is the opportunity for you or someone you know such as a neighbor or relative!
While we are looking for drivers for both morning and afternoon routes, our biggest need is in the afternoon from 2:45pm-4:00pm.
We offer a competitive hiring bonus of $750-$1,000 for bus drivers. We even provide paid training to obtain your CDL and our trainers are excited to help. VILLAGE OF WATERFORD JOB OPENING EQUIPMENT & WATER OPERATOR FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
The Village of Waterford is seeking a full time individual to join our public works staff. Applicants interested in the position will need to submit a resume, cover letter, and Village application. The Village application can be found on the Village of Waterford web site (www.waterfordwi.org) or picked up at the Village Hall at 123 North River St. The operator position will work in the public works department in maintaining our water system, sewer system, Village buildings, parks, and all operations of the street department. The applicant will need to have a Class B CDL with air brakes or the ability to obtain one in 6 months.
The applicant will be required to obtain a State of Wisconsin Water operator’s license with distribution, groundwater and iron removal certification within two years of hire. Failure to obtain any of the licenses in the designated time frame will be grounds for dismissal.
The operator’s position responds to department call outs and must be able to arrive at the Public works building within 30 minutes of being contacted. All applicants must read the full “Equipment & Water Operator” job description on the Village web site before applying. Village of Waterford is an EOE opportunity.
Starting at $27.95-29.45 an hour, and includes both an attractive and comprehensive insurance/vacation package as well as enrollment in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). Work hours Monday-Thursday 7am-4:30pm, Friday 7am-11am.
