Court news Man allegedly took coins from laundry machines A Janesville man is expected to waive his preliminary hearing and enter a plea Dec. 13 to stealing money from laundry machines at a Delavan apartment building.

Barton D. Campbell, 41, was charged Oct. 31 in Walworth County Circuit Court with burglary of a building or dwelling and misdemeanor theft.

According to the criminal complaint, the owner of Chestnut Ridge Apartments set up a live camera in the laundry area of the Autumn Drive complex after he had experienced thefts from the coin washing machines and dryers. On Oct. 26, the owner saw the man he suspected in the thefts enter the building wearing a Jetz Services uniform and empty coins from washing machines into a

black backpack, according to the complaint.

The apartment building owner employs Jetz Services to service, maintain and collect coins from the machines, and Campbell had worked at Jetz before resigning in June, according to the complaint. The owner said Campbell appeared to still have keys to the washers, dryers and entrance doors of the building, according to the complaint.

Police found a black backpack that contained at least $500 in quarters near Campbell’s vehicle in the 400 block of Autumn Drive. Campbell told police he was at the apartment complex to visit his girlfriend but admitted he used to work for Jetz Services and later said he only “did it twice” because he has a small child at home, according to the complaint.
