Police investigating armed robbery attempt on Cayuga Ave.

According to a release issued by Chief Michael Ruth of the Elmhurst Police Department, police are investigating an attempted armed robbery that was reported in the 300 block of Cayuga Ave. on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 9:45 p.m.

The victim told police that while he was out walking his dog, he noticed a light colored or white SUV pass him several times on Cayuga Ave. A brief time later, two suspects exited the vehicle displaying a black handgun.

They demanded money and patted the victim down. Subsequently, nothing was taken and the offenders fled the scene westbound on Wilson from Cayuga.

The two suspects were both described as male/black wearing black cloth masks. Suspect #1 was 18-20 years old, 5-foot-8 about 160 pounds; Suspect #2 was approximately 30 years old, 5-foot-10 about 200 pounds.

This incident remains under active investigation. Anyone who has information about this incident or who may have video from the area is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.

City to host 20th anniversary 9/11 ceremony

On Saturday, Sept. 11 beginning at 8:30 a.m., the public is invited to Fire Station #2 at 601 S. York St., where the City of Elmhurst will hold a special 20th anniversary 9/11 ceremony.

The ceremony will include not only City staff and elected officials, but also members of the Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments. The event is free and open to the community.

Man who stole urn containing baby’s ashes sentenced to 15 years DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that a Harvey man accused of burglarizing an Elmhurst residence where he stole, among other things, an urn con- Glenn Addison taining the ashes of the victims’ child, has been sentenced to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Glenn Addison, 68, appeared at a sentencing hearing this morning in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh, who handed down the sentence.

Addison entered a plea of guilty to one count of residential burglary, a Class 1 felony, on Aug. 18. Due to Addison’s criminal history however, he was eligible for Class X sentencing.

On Dec. 9, 2019, the Elmhurst Police Department received a call regarding a residential burglary on Melrose Street. When speaking to officers, the victims reported that a coin collection

and an urn containing the ashes of their infant son were missing. Officers immediately began an investigation into the burglary.

Through the course of that investigation Elmhurst police officers were able to gather sufficient information to charge Addison, who was at the time on parole for a 2014 burglary. On Dec. 17, 2019, Addison was arrested and taken into custody without incident from his home in Harvey. He appeared in Bond Court the following day where bond was set at $750,000. He has re-

mained in custody since that time at the DuPage County Jail.

At the bond hearing, Judge Jeffrey MacKay signed an order immediately releasing the urn containing the baby’s ashes back to the family.

“Mr. Addison’s criminal behavior has once again landed him behind bars as he now finds himself looking at a 15-year sentence,” Berlin said. “The fact that Mr. Addison stole an urn containing the ashes of a deceased infant, which offered absolutely no monetary value to him, demonstrates the utter

callousness of his actions and his complete disregard for the sanctity of human life.

“Thanks to the outstanding work of the Elmhurst Police Department, the victims in this case will not only receive justice for the crime committed against them, they are once again in possession of their infant son’s ashes, which if lost, could never be replaced.”

Addison will be required to serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He will receive credit for time served thus far.

‘Cue for a Cause smokes the others

Gorgeous day, top-notch grillers, fun for kids, good music spell success for EWAN

It was bright and sunny with just the right cool breeze on Sunday, Sept. 5. It could not have been a more beautiful day for this year’s ‘Cue for a Cause, the annual barbecue competition held by the Elmhurst Walk-in Assistance Network (EWAN). This year’s event included not only a contest for best ribs, chicken and sauce but also a baking competition for cookies and pies.

Besides the competitors causing aromatic smoke to fill the area of the municipal lot at York and Vallette behind the Knights of Columbus, there were kids’ games and activities, live musical entertainment and “Barbecue Jim” Lawshe serving up barbecue sandwiches and more. The root beer float stand was open for business and, inside the Knights of Columbus, judges “worked hard”

to select the winners by tasting all the ribs, chicken Best Chicken: and sauces. Among the judges were Mayor Scott 1. Smokin’ Tailgators, Steve DeBoer Levin, former Mayor Steve Morley and 7th Ward 2. The TW Chicago Smokers, Thomas Wold Alderman Mike Brennan.

DuPage Medical Group informs patients of data security incident Investigation: Outage caused by ‘unauthorized actors’ gaining access to network ough and time-consuming review of its systems to understand whether any patient information may have been impacted as a result of this event.

On Aug. 17, DMG determined that certain files stored within its environment that contained patient information may have been impacted by this incident.

DMG is in the process of mailing letters to a broad and inclusive list of individuals directly whose information may be involved in this incident.

The personal information potentially affected by this included names, addresses, dates of birth, diagnosis codes, CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology, also known as service codes, are a universal system that identifies medical procedures), and treatment

For a small subset of individuals, Social Security numbers may also have been affected. To date, DMG has no evidence that any information has been subject to actual or attempted misuse as a result of this incident. This event did not impact financial account numbers.

While the investigation determined that only certain portions of the network were impacted by this event, DMG conducted an extensive and

thorough investigation and could not rule out the possibility that files containing patients’ information may have been impacted by this event.

DMG said it takes this incident seriously, and as an added precaution, it is offering credit monitoring and identify theft protection at no cost for those individuals affected and potentially affected by this incident. A dedicated call center has been established to help address questions. Additional information is available by calling

Elmhurst church receives national grant to aid local refugees, migrants First United Methodist honored with ‘Mustard Seed Migration Grant’ United Methodist churches in the Northern Illinois Annual Conference, including First United Methodist of Elmhurst, will be able to provide food and access to benefits of exposure to the arts to refugees and migrants living in their local community, thanks to new grants from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The Mustard Seed Migration Grants, awarded to United Methodist churches in the United States, continue the agency’s 80-year tradition of helping refugees, immigrants and migrants seeking to build new lives.

The Mustard Seed Migration Grants, inspired by the well-known parable about growth, are providing 33 congregations in 20 states and 20 annual conferences with up to $2,000 to support one-time, community-based service projects. These churches will now assist refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented persons and migrants of all types in their own cities and towns.

“Clothing and feeding those facing challenges is ingrained in the mindset of United Methodists across northern Illinois,” said Bishop John L. Hopkins, interim bishop in the Northern Illinois Conference of The United Methodist Church. “UM Global Ministries through UMCOR is making it possible for more of those in need to have essentials through a community arts program for children and the comfort of traditional foods.”

The DuPage Medical Group (DMG) announced on Monday, Aug. 30 that it has identified and addressed a data security incident, and is now notifying patients whose information may have been involved.

On July 13, DMG experienced a security incident that caused a disruption to its network systems. DMG immediately began working with third-party cyber-forensic specialists to assist in the investigation to determine the full nature and scope of the incident.

Through the investigation, it was determined that the network outage was caused by unauthorized actors who gained access to the DMG network, between July 12 and July 13.

With the assistance of the forensic specialists, DMG conducted a thor-

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault, battery Aug. 28 Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital at 12:02 a.m. for the report of two patients with stab wounds. The victims related they received their injuries while in another jurisdiction. Melrose Park Police responded to the hospital and took over the investigation.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Aug. 26 A complainant in the 400 block of Oaklawn told police at 8:53 a.m. that several surfaces and playground equipment at Berens Park were defaced with black marker. The officer made contact with the juvenile who admitted to defacing the surfaces. The juvenile was referred to peer jury.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Sept. 1 Jerome P. Niehus, 57, of Hillside, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/befouling property in the 100 block of E. Fremont at 4:17 p.m.

Police said a reporting officer met with a complainant in the 300 block of E. Crescent at 7:04 p.m. who reported a group of juveniles made inappropriate statements to her 9-year-old son. The reporting officer was able to make contact with a suspect who stated he and his friends were in the area but does not recall talking to a younger child. The suspect further states his friends often use foul language among each other, but not with others, especially younger children.

Aug. 30 Police said a reporting officer met with a complainant in the 700 block of S. Benton, who reported a USPS employee was bitten by a dog at the reported location. The reporting officer met with victim at Elmhurst Hospital who reported she sustained a puncture mark on the back right side of her left calf. The case was referred to the DuPage County Animal Care and Control.

Aug. 29 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of W. Armitage at 6:21 p.m. for the report of a domestic battery where a juvenile suspect struck his great grandmother and threw an object at his great grandfather. The suspect was taken into custody and was transported to the police station. He was charged with four counts of domestic battery and was transported to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center.

Aug. 27 Police said officers responded to the 100 block of Caroline at 11:39 p.m. for a complaint. The complainant told police that during the suspects’ first attempt to “ding-dong ditch” (ring the bell and run) her home, she exited

her house and scolded the group. The teens later returned, rang her doorbell, and threw a piece of fruit at her house. Officers checked the area with no results. There were multiple complaints of similar incidents.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor Aug. 31 Nathaniel McGarry, 33, of Melrose Park, was charged with DUI, speeding and failure to signal when required subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Fullerton at 11:43 p.m.

Aug. 29 Jesse A. Marshall, 31, of Hillside, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis by a driver, stopping/standing on a roadway and possession of open alcohol near Lake and Church at 12:47 a.m.

Aug. 28 Jamie D. Gomez, 27, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at 2:12 a.m.

Aug. 27 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of Crockett at 6:35 a.m. for a check on well-being of someone seated on the curb. The suspect admitted to consuming alcohol, was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor and was transported to his residence.

Fleeing, eluding

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle or a motorcycle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Harassment, threats Aug. 6 Police said a reporting officer at York High School was alerted about threatening messages sent from one student to another. The suspect admitted to sending the messages but said he meant no harm. An investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Aug. 29 Police said that subsequent to an extra patrol of the Addison parking garage, an officer observed Kenneth S. Lee, 22, of Hoffman Estates, and Miriam Olague, 20, of Bensenville, within a vehicle on the fifth level. Police said Lee retrieved a cannabis grinder containing loose cannabis from the center console and handed it to the officer. According to police, Olague was found to be in possession of an open can of beer, provided the officer with a false date of birth and admitted to drinking three beers before the officer arrived. Lee was cited for possession of cannabis in a vehicle.

Olague was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor and disorderly conduct/obstructing.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Villa and Rose at 7:12 p.m., the suspect

was found to be in possession of cannabis.

During the traffic stop, the officer was unable to weigh the recovered cannabis but advised the suspect of the consequences if the cannabis weighed more than 30 grams. The cannabis was found to weigh 58 grams. The officer will seek a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. Charges are pending.

Aug. 28 Denell B. Brown, 28, of Oakbrook Terrace, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Lexington and York at 1:36 p.m.

Aug. 27 Carlos A. Delgado, 21, of Bensenville, was charged with possession of cannabis (over 100 grams), no insurance and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at 9:46 p.m.

Aug. 26 Nicholas E. Mato, 23, of Elmhurst, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis in a vehicle and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Willow at 10:08 p.m. Police said Mato was found to be in possession of Psilocybin and 45 grams of medical cannabis which was not in a sealed, odor-proof, child resistant container.

Suspicious circumstances Aug. 29 A reporting officer at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 met with a complainant who reported an unknown suspect was following her around different grocery stores. While at one of the stores, the unknown suspect did not appear to make a purchase before leaving the store toward Route 83. The subject did not approach her or engage in conversation with her while he was in the store. The complainant described the suspect as a younger black male, clean shaven, with a short afro hairstyle.

Aug. 28 Police said a reporting officer received information about possible retail thefts of liquor from a store in the 900 block of S. York at 12:44 p.m. The officer made contact with the driver of the vehicle believed to be involved in the thefts. The officer spoke to a suspect as she exited the store. An investigation is pending.

Police said that subsequent to a report of criminal defacement of property in the 100 block of E. Schiller, suspects were located and admitted to spraying disappearing foam onto the side of a building. The area was checked with no results for defacement. Four juvenile suspects were released to their parents.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Aug. 31 Devonda D. Lewis, 29, of Bloomingdale, was charged with retail theft, battery and disorderly conduct at a store in the 500 block of S. Spring at 1:21 p.m. According to police, a complainant reported Lewis was harassing customers before leaving the store with an unpaid item. Police said officers met with another complainant who reported she had been poked by Lewis.

Theft by deception was reported in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at 5:07 p.m. A victim told police she received an email from a friend requesting she purchase two gift cards and to

provide the card numbers. The victim complied with the request but later discovered her friend’s email account had been hacked and the email was sent by an unknown suspect(s).

Theft was reported in the 400 block of N. York at 3:39 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed money from his wallet. A reporting officer reviewed video footage which showed the victim’s wallet in his back pocket with cash exposed. The unknown suspect was able to take the cash and walk away. The suspect is a white or Hispanic male, around 5-8, 180 pounds, wearing a red baseball hat, sunglasses, blue and gray shirt, black shorts and white gym shoes.

Theft was reported at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at 8:19 p.m. A reporting officer met with a complainant who reported an unknown suspect dispensed fuel and left without paying. The complainant reviewed video surveillance footage which showed a white female with blonde hair, a thin build, wearing a purple and pink skirt, and white sandals. The unknown female entered the front passenger seat of a vehicle and the vehicle exited southbound on York Street.

Aug. 30 Theft was reported in the 900 block of S. York at 1:13 p.m. A reporting officer met with a victim who reported her wallet was taken from her purse. The victim immediately contacted the credit card companies and found currency had been withdrawn from her savings account and a charge on one of the credit cards. The reporting officer was able to review video surveillance footage which showed an unknown, heavy-set, male suspect on a motorized scooter distracting the victim while another male black suspect approached the victim’s shopping cart and then walked away with an item in his left hand. The suspect on the scooter was described as a black male between 30-45 years of age, 5-10 and 6-2 tall, heavy-set, wearing a colored striped shirt, and long shorts. Theft of a vehicle was reported at Maple Tree Court at 1:13 p.m. A victim told police that he discovered his Vespa motor-scooter was missing. The victim stated he last saw his Vespa after he parked it by the sidewalk leading to the pool of the apartment complex. This case is pending investigation.

Aug. 29 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 800 block of N. York at 10:17 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) stole the catalytic converter from her vehicle while it was parked overnight in her parking lot. Video surveillance showed the suspects removing the catalytic converter and leaving the scene in one of the suspect’s vehicles.

Aug. 18 Pablo Landa Carrillo, 26, of Addison, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, obstructing identification, resisting/obstructing a police officer and driving while license suspended near Lake and Walnut at 4:14 a.m.

Police said a reporting officer observed a vehicle which was reported stolen out of Aurora. Subsequent to a foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody and was transported to the police station. Police said the suspect admitted to driving the vehicle and knowing the vehicle was stolen.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported five incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Unlawful possession of a controlled substance Sept. 1 Michael Bernacki, 33, of Summit, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, while Keith Terrell, 50, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia in the 900 block of S. York at 8:07 p.m.

Police said Bernacki was also found to have a valid warrant out of Illinois Department of Corrections for a parole violation. According to police, a reporting officer located a vehicle that was reportedly stolen out of the Chicago Police Department. The reporting officer made contact with the Bernacki and Terrell, both of whom were found to be in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Inaugural Paul Simon-Jim Edgar award celebrates individual bravery, collective statesmanship

By Jim Edgar and John Shaw Less than five years ago, Illinois was moving aggressively in the wrong direction, careening toward the fiscal precipice, lurching toward junk bond status. A brutal and counterproductive two-year budget stalemate had tarnished Illinois’ reputation, damaged our schools, battered our credit rating, and led to about $15 billion in unpaid bills.

An important but fragile budget plan hung in the balance in the summer of 2017. Eleven Republican members of the Illinois General Assembly joined with Democrats to override then-Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of the budget compromise, thus ensuring its passage and protecting the fiscal solvency of Illinois.

The budget allowed Illinois to avert a further downgrading of its debt and ensured that Illinois state government would resume regular operations. The 2017 budget paved the way for subsequent fiscal progress in the state as reflected in recent upgrades to Illinois’ credit rating by Moody’s Investor Service and S&P Global Ratings.

The decision to support this agreement was courageous, consequential and effective. While several of the Republican lawmakers who voted for the package received accolades from their constituents, many were sharply criticized and later faced primary opposition. Several opted to retire after casting the critical budget vote.

It was with this history in mind and because of its clear connection to our much-improved fiscal position that we decided to award the inaugural Paul Simon-Jim Edgar Statesmanship Award to the 11 Republican lawmakers who cast those decisive votes in 2017. Their votes represented both individual bravery and collective statesmanship.

The recipients are: Steve Andersson of Geneva; Terri Bryant of Murphysboro; Mike Fortner of West Chicago; David Harris of Arlington Heights; Chad Hays of Catlin; Sara Wojcicki Jimenez of Springfield; Norine Hammond of Macomb; Bill Mitchell of Decatur; Reggie Phillips of Charleston; Mike Unes of Pekin; and Dale Righter of Mattoon.

We believe this was one of the most consequential votes in recent Illinois history, pulling the state back from the brink and helping put us on a far better path. Looking ahead, we will need more leaders casting more courageous and consequential votes if Illinois is to confront the structural imbalance in our budget and tackle other difficult issues. This vote showed us the way to a better Illinois.

We hope this award encourages the residents of Illinois to take notice of and reward public officials who take difficult actions in the best longterm interest of our state.

We expect future Simon-Edgar awards will go to a single person, but the 2017 budget vote was so consequential that we decided on a collective award this year.

The Simon-Edgar Award shines a spotlight on exceptional leadership that is taking place in our communities and serves as a reminder that statesmanship is not only possible in Illinois but is actually happening. It is our hope that this award becomes an important part of Illinois’ political tradition.

Edward-Elmhurst Health news Elmhurst woman discovers BRCA gene, takes health into her own hands Like most people, Mary Bis knew she wanted to live a long and healthy life, she just needed some additional measures to help get her health under control.

Bis, 44, of Elmhurst, has a family history of cancer. While her mother was going through treatment, her mother’s internal medicine physician Diane Fabrizius, M.D. suggested Bis and her siblings get tested for the breast cancer gene (BRCA).

“We did it together,” Bis said.

“Most of my family members got tested for the BRCA gene, including my aunts and cousins.”

Bis met with a genetic counselor, who gave her a blood test and mapped out her family tree. Her results came back BRCA-positive. She knew she had to do something, but the timing had to be right.

“I wanted to have children first and I was also committed to my profession,” Bis said. “After my mom passed away, that expedited things. I knew I needed to get my life going and address my own risk.”

At age 35, Bis met her husband Ian and they had two children, Archie, 8, and Rocky, 6. There was no better time than the present.

Her doctor, obstetrician-gynecologist Brian Sklar, M.D, performed an oophorectomy to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes. She then had a prophylactic double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer. Once she was through with her preventative surgeries, she began breast reconstruction.

The road to recovery had started, but she didn’t recover as quickly as she had hoped.

“During recovery, I put on lots of weight, which made the healing process that much harder,” she said.

Bis struggled with shortness of breath, back pain, joint pain and sleep apnea due to being overweight.

She knew she needed a permanent solution. She researched bariatric surgery, but the idea was daunting — it was another surgery and another recovery.

“Once I read that gastric bypass was completed laparoscopically, it helped me expedite my decision making,” she said.

She attended her first information session with bariatric and obesity medicine specialists Mark Choh, M.D., and Omar Shamsi, M.D. Both physicians were supportive and walked her through the process.

Hearing the health benefits of the surgery — which were more than just weight loss — struck a chord.

Bis’ preventative surgeries have helped her prevent health issues before they can begin. Not only did she reduce her risk for cancer, but she also reduced her risk for diabetes, high blood pressure and other diseases related to obesity.

“It’s hard to believe when I started this journey, I had an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer

and now I have less than a two percent chance, while also decreasing my risk for other health problems,” Bis said. “It hasn’t been easy, but I know these surgeries will have a large impact on my quality of life going forward.”

The event will be held adjacent to the museum’s outdoor exhibit comprised of two structural steel beams from the former World Trade Center buildings in New York. The memorial is dedicated to those lost in the terrorist attacks 20 years ago and honors the first responders who served that day and continue to serve in our local communities.

The Cantigny ceremony also will pay tribute to the families of 9/11 victims; post-9/11 War on Terrorism fallen soldiers, veterans and their families; essential caregivers; and Gold Star families.

Following the ceremony, Cantigny and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation’s Veterans Program will host a Post 9/11 Veterans Resource Fair from 12:30 to 3 p.m., in the First Division Museum Pavilion. The event will offer resources tailored to young veterans and their families.

A variety of Chicagoland nonprofits and programs plan to exhibit—participating organizations are listed below and posted at FDMuseum.org. Non-veteran guests are welcome and encouraged to learn about volunteer opportunities and additional ways to support veterans in their neighborhoods.

Karnatz collects academic honor while setting nine school athletic records Lawrence University softball standout Amanda Karnatz was chosen for the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District 6 team in July.

A resident of Elmhurst and a graduate of York High School, Karnatz was among 11 individuals chosen from NCAA Division III institutions in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. A dual degree in mathematics and choral and music education, Karnatz compiled a 3.62 grade point

average.

Karnatz put together an amazing senior season to cap a fabulous career. A first-team All-Great Lakes Region selection and a four-time all-region pick, Karnatz also earned Midwest Conference Player of the Year honors. She was a four-time all-conference selection and was selected Athlete of the Year at Lawrence University.

Following a stellar 2021 campaign, Karnatz broke the school sea-

son record with a .538 batting average while hitting atop the Lawrence lineup. She broke the mark of .515 set by Lawrence Hall of Famer Tracie Spangenberg back in 1987. She led the Midwest Conference in hitting and also paced the league with an .875 slugging percentage. That translates into a staggering 1.413 OPS for a lead-off hitter.

Karnatz led the league in extra-base hits with 19 as no other Midwest Conference player had

more than 15. She led the nation in triples at per game and finished 16th in batting average. She was 22nd in slugging percentage in the country and 48th at doubles per game.

The finest season in Karnatz’s standout career pushed her to multiple school records. A career .441 hitter, Karnatz ranks second in batting average. She set school career records with 191 hits, first with 135 runs scored, first with 47 doubles, first with 12 triples and first with

21 hit-by-pitches. She also owns season records in batting average, doubles, triples and hit-by-pitch.

She posted a career .514 on-base percentage and .612 slugging percentage.

Karnatz joins baseball player Clayton Agler as an academic all-district selection in 2021. They are Lawrence’s first academic all-district picks since cross country and track star Josh Janusiak was chosen in 2019.

ICCP students achieve honors on Advanced Placement exams IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) announced last week that AP students qualified for 27 Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams during the 2020-21 school year. The Knights of Columbus facility has a capacity of 250 people. The dance band performs music from the swing era to today’s music.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. There will be a dance lesson provided during the band break. There will

also be a cash bar, free parking and a large dance floor. Masks are required while dancing.

If successful, APOL plans to perform once per month at Knights of Columbus.

The Association of Professional Orchestra Leaders (APOL) is a not-forprofit organization that promotes live music and presents scholarships to gifted college students.

Curvy Red Hatter turns 101 years young

On Wednesday, Aug. 18, the Elmhurst Curvy Red Hatters had a surprise birthday celebration for its oldest member Jean Schildbach.

Jean turned 101 years young on Aug. 29.

Jean has been a resident of Elmhurst for 96 years and was a Girl Scout leader, attended York High School and held many volunteer positions for her church and our community. She still writes poetry and has graced the monthly meetings of the Red Hatters with lots of laughs, smiles and reads at least one poem she has composed.

Her family is going to give her a “101 Dalmatians” party and she hopes to be wearing a spotted dress and maybe even long ears!

Energy bill negotiations head to House after talks once again derailed Closure of municipal coal plants remains sticking point

The Illinois Senate approved an energy bill in the early hours of Sept. 1, but it’s likely to change as negotiations continue in the House, which has not set a date as to when it will return.

A lead negotiator in the House said time is of the essence with key deadlines arriving for renewable energy investments and the potential closure of two nuclear power plants.

“So we are very confident that we’re going to get this done.” Rep. Marcus Evans Jr., a Chicago Democrat who is in the House energy working group, said in a phone call.

“So we’ll be back hopefully in a few days.”

The measure being considered, contained in amendments to Senate Bill 18, was filed the evening of Aug. 31, shortly before midnight after another measure contained in House Bill 3666 failed to gain the support of environmental groups, the governor and the House speaker during negotiations earlier in the day.

Decarbonization timelines for municipal coal-fired power plants continued to hold up the bill’s passage, so the new bill was filed with the same language so that conversations could continue in the House.

Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Frankfort, sponsored both bills, hailing the measure that passed Wednesday

morning as “the most equitable, diverse and inclusive clean energy bill in the entire country.”

It’s a wide-ranging bill creating and funding equity-based training programs, subsidizing nuclear plants and renewable energy, and more.

The bill provides that the Energy Transition Assistance Fund, which funds workforce initiatives, will receive up to $180 million annually from a charge on ratepayer bills.

Some of the other major expenditures in the bill include a nearly $700 million five-year subsidy of nuclear plants, and doubling the rate cap from about 2 percent to 4 percent for the charge on ratepayer bills to fund renewable projects.

As it stands, bill negotiators estimate the cost of the bill at about a $3.55 monthly increase to the average residential customer, a $34 increase to commercial user bills and a $31,136 increase to the average industrial bill. That’s an increase of over 3 percent for a residential bill, over 5 percent for a commercial bill and over 7 percent for an industrial bill, Hastings said on the floor.

Nuclear power already provides about 60 percent of the state’s energy mix, and will at least have to continue to produce that much for grid sustainability as the state aims to reach a 100 percent carbon-free energy future by 2050, a goal set in the bill. Exelon, which owns the six nuclear power plants in Illinois, has threatened to close two plants—one in Byron; one in Dresden—potentially as early as mid-September, claiming they’re not profitable with-

out state subsidies. Labor union advocates testified that the plants had 14 days as of Monday before closure, which would cost 28,000 direct and indirect jobs.

As it stands, renewable resources contribute about 7-8 percent of the state’s energy mix, but the bill sets a goal of increasing that to 50 percent by 2040 through the increased investment.

Hastings said due to the passage of a statutory deadline for the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard, funds from a pool of money meant for renewable resources are being returned to ratepayers “at the effect of a million dollars a day.”

“So if we fail to take action, that investment in the renewable energy, whether it’s wind or solar, will continue to deplete from that fund,” he said.

Downstate Republicans in floor debate Sept. 1 noted only one nuclear plant provides energy downstate on the MISO power grid, so goals of 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2050 would be more difficult to reach outside of the Chicago area.

Sen. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, warned that downstate might end up having to rely on fossil fuels from neighboring states if coal and gas plants go entirely offline within the stated time frames.

Sen. Bill Cunningham, a Chicago Democrat, said the bill requires the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Illinois Commerce Commission and Illinois Power Agency to conduct a study at five-year intervals “to determine if there is grid reliability.”

“And if there are concerns about grid reliability, it would delay the closure of some of the gas plants, so there is a provision in the bill that will examine and make sure that renewable generation and battery storage has gone up before some of the closures are allowed to happen,” he said.

Gas plants would have to close or transition to a non-carbon emitting energy source such as “green hydrogen” by 2045 under the bill.

Rose also expressed concerns about language allowing a private company to invoke eminent domain, which Hastings said applies one time in seven counties for the purpose of a single transmission line.

Cunningham, who is one of the lead Senate negotiators on energy, said the company given that authority is Invenergy, for the Grain Belt Express direct current transmission line. It must follow a standard eminent domain process, Cunningham said.

“It has to go to the Illinois Commerce Commission, and it has to go to court,” Cunningham said.

“Nobody’s property is going to be taken away from them without due process and without giving them the full market value of whatever property a power transmission line has to go over and claim an easement.”

One main hold-up continues to be how to decarbonize municipal coal plants. The governor’s office and environmentalists favor language that contains a hard 2045 shutdown date for the City, Water, Light and Power coal plant in Springfield and the Prairie State Energy campus in

the Metro East area near St. Louis.

The Senate offered such a closure date, but the governor and environmental groups also want strict declining caps for carbon emissions from the plant.

“The Governor’s Office is in discussions with stakeholders to ensure that Prairie State and CWLP’s closure in 2045 includes real interim emissions reductions consistent with previous bill drafts, and is committed to working with the General Assembly to address some drafting errors in the Senate bill that the Governor raised during talks today because they could have unintended legal consequences,” Pritzker spokesperson Jordan Abudayyeh said in a statement.

In a news conference after the Senate vote, Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, said it may be difficult to reach a consensus on the declining carbon caps along with a hard closure date, because a coal plant would have to spend billions of dollars to install the carbon capture technology, only to be guaranteed that the plant would be taken offline in the next 24 years.

The Senate offered a declining cap option with coal plants required to reach net zero emissions by 2045 with a possibility of staying open if they do, but that was rejected by the governor’s office. They countered with a hard 2045 closure date and no declining caps, but that was also rejected.

“We are very open to being proved that some hybrid can work.

My intuition is just that’s going to be a real challenge,” Harmon said.

Ethics bill fails as Republicans pull support; lawmakers override governor on ambulance veto

Veto actions taken as lawmakers returned to Capitol for one-day redistricting session

The Illinois House failed to muster the votes last week to accept Gov. JB Pritzker’s amendatory veto to an ethics bill that passed nearly unanimously earlier this year.

Pritzker issued the amendatory veto of Senate Bill 539 Aug. 27, saying he supports the legislation but would like to see a minor change in language dealing with the office of executive inspector general.

The Senate approved that technical change unanimously, but the trouble for the governor came in the House as Republicans removed their support for the bill and not enough Democrats remained in the chamber just before 10 p.m. Aug. 31 to reach the three-fifths vote needed for it to pass.

Among other things, the bill would have prohibited legislators and constitutional officers from engaging in “compensated lobbying” of a municipality, county or township.

The same would have applied to elected and appointed executive or legislative officials of county, municipal or township governments.

The bill also would have made a number of changes to financial disclosure requirements and limit-

ed the ability of lawmakers to leave office and immediately go to work as lobbyists.

It also would have given the legislative inspector general independent authority to launch investigations, but only after a formal complaint is filed.

It would have restricted those investigations to matters that arise out of government service or employment, not to outside employment.

The bill passed the General Assembly on the final day of the spring session, June 1, by overwhelming majorities—56-0 in the Senate; 113-5 in the House—even though many Republicans complained that they didn’t think the bill went far enough.

Soon after it passed, Legislative Inspector General Carol Pope announced that she would resign, effective Dec. 15, calling the job a “paper tiger” and saying it showed that “true ethics reform is not a priority” for the General Assembly.

She specifically alleged the provision limiting her ability to investigate non-governmental ethics violations, and the fact that a complaint would be required for an investigation, tied her hands.

Following that announcement, some legislative Republicans called on Pritzker to use his amendatory veto power to send the bill

back for revisions, “striking the provisions that would disempower the legislative inspector general.”

In his message, however, Pritzker did not mention the office of legislative inspector general, but rather its counterpart in the executive branch, the executive inspector general.

Specifically, he pointed to a change made in the bill that says the executive inspector general may receive and investigate complaints of wrongful behavior “without advance approval of the executive ethics commission.”

On Aug. 31 during floor debate, Rep. Avery Bourne, R-Morrisonville, evoked Pope’s resignation and noted Pritzker didn’t take any proposed GOP changes into account.

“Choosing to vote to uphold this weak amendatory veto is doubling down on the fact that the ethics reform that you passed takes away the ability to have a true and independent watchdog over this body,” Bourne, who initially voted for the bill, said in floor debate.

“Choosing to side with this weak amendatory veto is choosing to side to give cover to politicians, rather than having an opportunity for the public to have faith in our government.”

Ambulance veto overridden: Pritzker was dealt another blow

when lawmakers overrode his veto of a bill that removes non-emergency ambulance services from Medicaid managed care and places it back in a fee-for-service structure.

The bill passed each chamber unanimously earlier this year and the veto was overridden with only one vote against in the House. The Senate approved the override unanimously Aug. 31.

The measure would transfer the review of claims from managed care organizations, or MCOs, which are private insurance companies that oversee most Medicaid services in the state. The Department of Healthcare and Family Services, which opposed the bill, would be the entity handling those claims under the bill. They already do so for emergency ambulance services, a change made in April.

The Illinois State Ambulance Association said the measure, House Bill 684, is needed to counter arbitrary denials of claims by private insurers. The governor’s office and HFS, however, expressed “serious concerns for patient safety and cost.”

In his veto message, Pritzker said the bill “has the potential to disrupt care and reduce the quality of provided medical transportation services to some of the most vulnerable Illinoisans.”

But ambulance services said payment delays from MCOs threatened staffing, and the change would simply provide a way to “get paid for the services provided.”

Lawmakers sided with the ambulance providers over the governor, HFS and the MCOs. Maternal health: Lawmakers also accepted an amendatory veto that aims to fix a technical issue on a bill Pritzker supported. The measure, Senate Bill 967, will expand the current Illinois Medicaid plan “so that individuals who don’t qualify for full benefit Medicaid still have coverage for preventive contraceptive care and associated screenings related to reproductive well-being,” according to the governor’s office.

The bill passed each chamber unanimously Aug. 31 after the amendatory veto changed only an effective date.

State Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, the bill’s Senate sponsor, noted in a news release when the bill passed that it also “would provide support for pregnant and new mothers for pregnancy-related condition, including mental health and substance use disorders by requiring private insurance plans to cover postpartum complications up to one year after delivery among other requirements.”

York and IC Catholic Prep football teams victorious Timothy Christian girls volleyball team 4-1 at Timothy-Westmont tournament

Both Elmhurst high school football teams continued their winning ways in Week 2.

The York football team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a dominating 54-0 West Suburban Conference crossover victory at home against Morton on senior night.

York has now outscored its first two opponents 91-7. The Dukes opened the season with a 37-7 win on the road against Hoffman Estates.

The Dukes are now 6-2 over their last eight games.

IC Catholic Prep headed north and came away with a 28-17 non-conference win over Woodstock Marian Central Catholic. The win also put the Knights at 2-0 on the season.

IC Catholic Prep opened the season with a road win at Montini.

The game was tied 7-7 after the first quarter and IC Catholic Prep took a 14-10 lead into halftime.

Both teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter and the Knights scored a fourth-quarter touchdown for added breathing room.

Sophomore quarterback Dennis Mandala completed 14 of 20 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

The Knights ran the ball 22 times for 125 yards (5.7 per carry). Junior Malik Gray ran 14 times for 83 yards, while Mandala had six carries for 35 yards. Senior Jadon Mims had two rushes for seven yards and one touchdown.

Senior Antonio Richardson caught four passes for 66 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore Kareem Parker had four catches for 44 yards. Senior Deontae Oatman had three catches for 43 yards. The York boys soccer team means business this fall.

The Dukes were off to a perfect 5-0 start, which included the team winning the Norm Hillner Lake Park Classic title. York started the tournament with a 5-0 win over host Lake Park and then downed South Elgin 7-0. York defeated St. Francis 4-1 in its third game there and downed Wheaton North 1-0 for the tournament title.

In the St. Francis win, Jose Herrera had the hat trick with three goals.

Yael Silvestre added a goal. Kevin Gliatis had two assists, while Kacper Janowski had one assist.

York opened the season with a 3-1 win over St. Patrick.

The Dukes, under the direction of coach Jordan Stopka, are coming off a COVID-19 spring season where they went 7-3-1 overall and went 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play.

Back for York is senior midfielder Sam Musial, a four-year varsity

player and an all-WSC Silver selection. He had five goals and two assists last year.

Herrera, a junior forward, had five goals and five assists this spring and was named all-conference. Silvestre, a senior forward/defender had three goals and one assist as a junior. Junior midfielder Joe Hernandez had a goal and four assists and was an all-WSC Silver pick. Gliatis, a senior forward, had seven goals and one assist in only eight games and also was an all-conference selection. Senior goalie Ricky Torres is back after recording two clean sheets this spring. Senior defender Connor Bare had one assist this past season.

Key newcomers to the team include Janowski, a senior midfielder, sophomore Gustavo Herrera (midfield-forward) and junior defender Ryder Kohl.

“We are strong in possession and should be able to score a lot of goals,” Stopka said. “We get the ball forward quickly and work hard to create space for our teammates. We are solid up top and in the midfield.

Our offense is looking very good and we are working on improving our defense, but currently playing well.”

The Timothy Christian boys soccer team got itself off to a solid early-season start.

Through late last week the Trojans were 3-2-1. Timothy defeated Northridge Prep 4-1 to open the season and then went 2-1 in the Bradley-Bourbonnais tournament.

The Trojans lost their opener in the tournament 4-1 to Plainfield East and then downed Momence 6-1 and scored a 9-1 win over Peotone.

Timothy also tied Nazareth Academy 2-2 and lost to crosstown neighbor IC Catholic Prep by a 1-0 count.

In the win over Northridge Prep, Christian Cruz had two goals, junior Cam Baker had two assists, while Eddie Favela and Hendrik DeVries each had one goal.

Timothy is coming off a COVID19-altered spring season where it went 8-4-2 overall and went 7-3 to take fourth place in the Metro Suburban Conference.

Cruz had 17 assists in 14 games this spring. “Look for Christian to have another huge season,” Zielke

said.

Zielke also has high hopes for Baker to continue his upward momentum. “Cam Baker is a bulldog in the middle of the field,” he said.

“Look for his stats to catch up to his work rate this season.”

In addition to being strong in the middle, Zielke likes the prospects of speedy sophomore forwards DeVries and Caleb Hoekstra. “We are continuing to work on movement patterns up top to get them in dangerous spaces where their speed can take over,” he explained.

Timothy’s defense, Zielke noted, has a good combination of veterans and newcomers with three-year starter Alex and Munk, who started every game in the spring, along with new faces in Firnsin and Day, who has dropped back from the midfield.

“It will take some time for them to gel and get used to playing alongside each other, but we already have seen great improvement with this group that has a good combination of strength and speed,” Zielke noted.

Steiner, Zielke said, will see the bulk of the minutes between the pipes this season. “This will be Kyle’s first year of organized soccer, but he has a good combination of soft hands, quickness and athleticism,” he said.

“He is getting better every day with positioning and growing in confidence.”

Zielke said he has a group on his hands eager to make some noise this fall. “This is a resilient and focused group,” he said.

“After no postseason in 2020, they are hungry to make a deep run this season.”

The Timothy Christian girls tennis team is coming off a COVID19-shortened season where it went a perfect 16-0 and won the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division title with a 4-0 record.

A season later, the Trojans are continuing their winning ways.

Timothy took second at the Ottawa Friday Night Light invitational and also scored dual wins over Trinity (6-0), Chicago Christian (4-1), Riverside-Brookfield (4-1) and lost 3-2 to Nazareth Academy.

Timothy also tied St. Viator 3-3 and downed Willowbrook 5-2 in a non-conference match.

Timothy returns the likes of sophomore sectional champions in Clarissa Chen and Crystina Lee, along with junior Maddie Drye and senior Kate Carpenter.

Key newcomers this year include freshman Jane Carter (No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles), juniors Angie Tornabene (No. 2 singles) and Miliana Martens (No. 2 doubles), seniors Victory Adams (No. 3 doubles, No. 3 singles), Kaye Galang (No. 3 and No. 4 doubles), sophomore Joanna Clohessy (No. 3 singles) and junior Hannah Preitauer (doubles).

Bond set for two accused of Naperville murder

Gun sale exchange in parking lot turns violent

On Friday, Sept. 3, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Naperville Interim Chief of Police Jason Arres announced that bond had been set for two individuals charged with first-degree murder following an altercation in a Naperville parking lot this past week.

Robert Chatman-Jones, 20, of Bellwood, and Desire Gray, 19, of Aurora, each appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $4 million for Chatman-Jones and $1.5 million for Gray. Both have been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Aggravated Battery – Discharge of a Firearm (Class X Felony) and one count of Attempt Armed Robbery – Discharged Firearm (Class 1 Felony).

On Sunday, Aug. 29 at approximately 2:11 p.m., Naperville police officers responded to a call of shots fired in a parking lot located on Amersale Drive. Upon their arrival, officers located two .40 caliber shell casings and more than $100 cash in the parking lot. While at the scene, the officers were notified that the Aurora Police Department had located a vehicle with two gunshot victims inside at McCoy Drive and Vaughn Road.

One victim had been shot in the left leg and the other victim, later identified as Coreon Davis, had been shot in the head and his left hand.

Both individuals were transported to a local hospital for medical attention.

Davis was later transported to Loyola Hospital where he subsequently died.

It is alleged that Davis and the second individual went to the parking lot on Amersale to sell a gun to Chat-

man-Jones. It is alleged that upon their arrival at the parking lot, a man, later identified as Chatman-Jones, exited a vehicle and approached their vehicle. It is further alleged that when Chatman-Jones gave Davis money for the gun, Davis, who remained in the vehicle, told Chatman-Jones that he was “short” on the amount of money the two had agree upon to complete the transaction. It is alleged that a struggle between Davis and Chatman-Jones began and that at this time, Chapman-Jones discharged a weapon, striking the two occupants of the vehicle. It is further alleged that both the victims’ car and Chatman-Jones and Gray fled the scene at this time.

Following an investigation into the murder led by the Naperville Police Department, Chatman-Jones and Gray were taken into custody without incident the following day from an Aurora apartment complex.

“I commend the Naperville Police Department for their truly exceptional police work that enabled us to take these defendants into custody just one day after the murder,” Berlin said. “Illegal gun sales and the violence that can erupt from such transactions, as is alleged in this case, will not be tolerated in DuPage County. ...

To the family and friends of Mr. Davis, I offer my condolences as they mourn this senseless loss of life.”

Chatman-Jones’s and Gray’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 28, 2021, for arraignment in front of Judge O’Hallaren Walsh.

Man accused of murder during alleged cannabis purchase On Tuesday, Aug. 31, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Hanover Park Chief of Police Michael Menough announced that a Glendale Heights man had been charged with first-degree murder following an altercation at a Hanover Park residence earlier this month. Richard Goodwin, 55, of Glendale Heights, appeared at a bond hearing, where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $500,000 full cash in accordance with a previously-issued arrest warrant. Goodwin has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder and two counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, a Class X Felony.

On Monday, Aug. 2 at approximately 7:47 p.m., Hanover Park police officers were dispatched to Pebblebeach Drive for a gunshot victim. As officers responded to the scene, a second call came for another gunshot victim, later identified as Marek Krywko, at the same location. Upon their arrival, officers located the initial victim outside the residence with a gunshot wound to her left thigh. Inside the residence, officers found Marek Krywko with a gun-

shot wound to his left thigh striking his femoral artery.

First aid was administered to both victims, but Krywko remained unresponsive and was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. He was pronounced deceased a short time later.

It is alleged that Goodwin and two females were at the residence to purchase marijuana from Krywko. It is alleged that when the female gave Goodwin a bottle of water, Goodwin shot her. It is further alleged that Goodwin then shot Krywko before fleeing the scene with the two female subjects.

Yesterday, a $500,000 full cash arrest warrant was issued for Goodwin. He was taken into custody from his home on Wednesday, Aug. 25 without incident.

Goodwin’s next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 17 for arraignment in front of Judge O’Hallaren Walsh.

On Jan. 17, 2019, following a seven-day-long jury trial, Ester was found guilty of first-degree murder.

Additionally, the jury found that the murder was committed in an exceptionally brutal or heinous manner.

On April 2, 2019, Judge Brian Telander sentenced Ester to natural life in the Illinois Department of Corrections without the possibility of parole for the murder plus an additional consecutive five years for concealment of a homicidal death.

In his appeal, Ester argued that the trial court committed plain error when it failed to adequately question two jurors.

The state contended that the error was not reversible because the evidence was not closely balanced. In its affirmation, the Appellate Court wrote that “whether the State proved that defendant committed first-degree murder is not a close issue.”

In support of this, the Appellate Court noted that the “defendant admitted he deliberately stabbed Valez four or five times, in the side” and that “this testimony alone proved that defendant intentionally performed acts that he knew created a strong probability of bodily harm to Valez.”

Presiding Justice Bridges delivered the judgment of the Court with Justice McLaren and Justice Hutchinson concurring.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin has announced that the Second District Appellate Court of Illinois has affirmed the conviction and Myron Ester sentence of life without the possibility of parole of Myron Ester for the 2013 murder of Linda Valez.

On Sept. 25, 2013, Glen Ellyn police officers responded to a missing person in the Glen Ellyn area.

Through the course of their missing person investigation, officers went to Panfish Park where Valez was known to frequent.

Three days later, while at Panfish Park, officers discovered a disturbed area of vegetation and drops of blood nearby.

Further examination of the area revealed a shallow grave in which officers discovered Valez. She had been stabbed 39 times. An investigation led by the Glen Ellyn Police Department and the Major Crimes Task Force revealed that at some time in the evening of Sept, 24, Valez and Ester had gone to Panfish Park together. While at the park, a verbal altercation between the two turned violent resulting in Ester stabbing Valez numerous times about the head, neck

On Wednesday, Sept. 1, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Bartlett Chief of Police Patrick Ullrich announced that a Bartlett teen had been charged in a juvenile petition with two counts of Reckless Homicide, a Class 3 Felony, following a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two Bartlett High School teens, Alex Czerwik and Cameron Kelty, both 16 years old. On Wednesday, Aug. 25, the State filed an original delinquent petition formally charging the teen. The initial court appearance for the teen and his parents is scheduled for Thursday, Sept.

It is alleged that on Tuesday, Aug. 3, the teen was driving his mother’s car with three friends northbound on Newport Boulevard when, according to the petition, he “accelerated rapidly, drove at a high rate of speed in excess of 100mph without regard to existing traffic conditions, and failed to decrease speed adequately when approaching the curve at Devon Avenue.” It is alleged that the teen then

drove off the road, where Newport Boulevard curves into Devon Avenue. It is alleged that the vehicle crashed into a utility pole, killing Alex Czerwik, who was seated in the front passenger seat, at the scene. All occupants of the vehicle were transported to area hospitals for medical attention. On Friday, Aug. 6, Kelty passed away due to injuries sustained in the crash. It is alleged that, at times, the teen was driving in excess of 100 mph and in excess of 80 mph at the time of the crash.

“The tragic loss of two young men who were friends of the teen just rips your heart in two,” Berlin said. “On behalf of the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, I extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Alex Czerwik and Cameron Kelty as they try to piece their lives back together after such a devastating loss.”

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.
