Staff provides facilities construction update

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting.

Immediately before the regular meeting, the board held a brief public hearing regarding the district’s 2021-22 annual budget. Board members voted unanimously during the regular meeting to approve a resolution adopting the budget for the district’s 2021-22 fiscal year. Christopher Whelton, the district’s assistant superintendent of finance and operations, spoke during the hearing.

Whelton highlighted the district’s operating fund, which has projected

revenues of about $142.3 million in its 2021-22 fiscal year. Expenditures are projected at about $141 million, resulting in net income of about $1.3 million during the fiscal year. That income of $1.3 million is expected to boost the district’s operating fund balance to about $62.7 million by the end of the 2021-22 fiscal year.

According to budget information on the district’s website, the district’s operating fund included revenues of about $108.8 million and expenditures of about $110.6 million during its 2014-15 fiscal year. The district’s operating fund revenues, therefore, have increased about 30.8 percent from the 2014-15 fiscal year to the 2021-22 fiscal year, while expendi-

Three Cook County minors charged with breaking into Elmhurst vehicles On Thursday, Sept. 23, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced that three Hazel Crest juveniles, aged 13, 15 and 17, appeared at a detention hearing charged with breaking into several cars in Elmhurst the previous night. Each of the juveniles was charged with one count of Burglary to a Motor Vehicle (Class 3 Felony) and two counts of Criminal Trespass to a Motor Vehicle (Class A Misde-

meanor). In addition, the 13-yearold has been charged with one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, a Class 4 Felony. Following the hearing, the judge ordered that the juveniles be placed on electronic monitoring and returned home.

On Wednesday, Sept. 22, at approximately 10:27 p.m., Elmhurst police officers responded to a call of several individuals pulling on car doors allegedly attempting to gain entry into the vehicles. Upon their

arrival, officers located the juveniles who were taken into custody at that time. It is alleged that the juveniles gained entry to three vehicles and burglarized one vehicle. It is further alleged that at the time of his arrest, the 13-year-old juvenile had in his possession a loaded 9 mm pistol with one bullet in the chamber.

“The allegations against these three juveniles are outrageous,” Berlin said. “Violent crime has no place in a civilized society and, in DuPage

County, it will be met with the full force of the law, regardless of the defendant’s age. I commend those residents who alerted authorities when they suspected foul play. I thank the Elmhurst Police Department for the quick apprehension of the defendants in this case.”

“The arrest of the suspects in this case is the direct result of concerned citizens reporting suspicious activity,” Ruth said. “I applaud their vigilance and encourage everyone to

immediately report any suspicious activity they may observe.”

The 13-year-old juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 21. The 15-year-old juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 20.

The 17-year-old juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 22.

Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest draws record numbers Haymarket voted ‘Best Brewer 2021’

On a perfect late summer Saturday, Sept. 18, the 6th Annual Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest brought 1,000+ attendees to Elmhurst History Museum campus to sample craft beers from throughout the Chicago area. This wildly popular and growing event, hosted by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, raises money to support exhibits and the educational programs at the museum, in addition to the Churchville Schoolhouse.

Pints was the event sponsor this year and more than 40 other local, community-minded businesses contributed to making the event a hit. Returning sponsors Lakeside Bank, Pete DiCianni and Suburban Bank and Trust, were joined by Kelly Stetler at Compass Real Estate, a new sponsor, as the exclusive Platinum level sponsors.

More than 100 dedicated volunteers donated their time to assist in making the Fest run smoothly. For the first time, Beer Ambassadors in each of the three beer tents helped attendees navigate their way to find their favorite beer, cider or seltzer.

Celebrity pourers including DuPage County Board member Pete DiCianni, Mayor Scott Levin, City Manager Jim Grabowski, Aldermen Marti Deuter (1st Ward), Bob Dunn (2nd), Chris Jensen (3rd) and Jennifer Veremis (1st), City Engineer Kent Johnson, and former 7th Ward Alderman Pat Wagner served samples from some of the more than 50 brewers.

looking to mix food with their sampling. Outside the tents, fest goers relaxed on the north lawn of the museum at picnic tables and benches or enjoyed the music of returning bands Petty Cash and Moonshine Brothers All Stars Band.

Cathy Jordan, chair of the Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest, reflected on the day: “The day was perfect in so many ways,” she said. “We hope our sponsors and attendees enjoyed the Fest after last year’s postponement. Our brewers stepped up and provided everyone with a great selection of spirits. By attending, we are able to fund valuable programs at the museum that are important to the community.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Sept. 19 Police said officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Eldridge Lane at 11:32 p.m. for a domestic dispute where after a verbal argument, the suspect kicked a door to the residence and broke it. The suspect was not on scene when officers arrived. A warrant will be sought for the suspect on a charge of criminal damage to property.

Sept. 18 A victim in the 300 block of N. Adell reported at 10:35 p.m. that an unknown suspect defaced the driveway.

Sept. 16 A victim in the 200 block of N. York reported that an unknown suspect(s) scratched the passenger side of her vehicle while it was parked in the parking lot outside of a business in the 200 block of N. York at 7:08 p.m.

Sept. 14-Sept. 15 A victim at Windsor Drive reported that an unknown group of juveniles had damaged the plastic window well to the residence sometime between the above dates. The victim stated he did not see the juveniles but heard them pounding on his windows and doors.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Sept. 20 Mohamed H. Bakri, 53, of Columbus, Ohio, was charged with DUI subsequent to a traffic crash in the 900 block of Riverside at 11:39 p.m.

A 47-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of S. Fairlane at 6:54 p.m. A victim told police that subsequent to an argument, the suspect forcefully grabbed both of her arms and pushed her up the stairs. The officer observed redness on the victim’s arms and near her collar bone.

Sept. 18 Ruben Ortiz, 30, of Melrose Park, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct in the 500 block of W. Grand at 11:40 p.m. According to police, a victim reported that Ortiz was continuously hitting the front desk glass and yelling at the victim because he was told he could not use the phone.

Louis A. Szabo, 33, of Addison, was charged with disorderly conduct in the 100 block of N. Addison at 2 a.m. Police said officers were dispatched to the above location for a report that Szabo was waving a knife around.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor Sept. 22 Peyton N. Ferraro, 20, of Bartlett, was issued citations for possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of tobacco by a minor in the 400 block of N. York at 12:01 a.m.

Sept. 19 Sheenia Herron, 38, of South Holland, was charged with DUI, speeding 35-plus mph over the speed limit, improper lane usage and failure to signal while changing lanes subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at 1:26 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for speeding and squealing tires near S. York and Palmer at 4:56 a.m., a juvenile suspect was found to be DUI. The juvenile driver was charged with DUI, speeding and squealing tires. The passengers in the vehicle were also found to be minors that consumed alcohol and were out past curfew.

Sept. 18 William Estrada, 39, of Hoffman Estates, was charged with aggravated DUI, aggravated DUI while license suspended/revoked, improper lane usage, disobeying a traffic control device, no insurance, and no valid driver’s license subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Highview at 9:07 p.m.

Julio Medina, 30, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and driving without headlights, while Ana Casas, 26, of Villa Park, a passenger in the vehicle, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Fremont at 2:13 a.m.

Sept. 16 Jenna Rozhon, 20, of Niles, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, false use of ID and possession of tobacco products by a minor in the 100 block of N. Addison at 11:29 p.m.

Fleeing, eluding

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle or a motorcycle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Harassment, threats

Sept. 16 A victim in the 100 block of N. Melrose reported at 5:14 p.m. that she received threatening text messages from the suspect. The victim related she will attempt to obtain an order of protection against the suspect.

Sept. 19 Reyes Atilano, 41, of Palatine, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and westbound I-290 at 9:06 a.m. Police said a passenger in the vehicle admitted to possessing a crack pipe on his person. According to police, the passenger also was in possession of one baggie of white rocklike substance which tested positive for crack cocaine as well as three baggies containing a white powdery residue which tested positive for fentanyl. Charges are pending for the passenger, police said.

Sept. 18 Theft was reported in the 900 block of S. York at 6:58 p.m. A reporting officer responded to the above location for a theft of a wallet.

The victim reported that he left his wallet in a grocery cart after shopping at Jewel. The victim checked the area with negative results.

Forgery was reported in the 300 block of S. York at 4:06 p.m. A complainant found the victim’s checkbook was missing a check and she contacted the bank. The complainant learned the stolen check was written and cashed by the suspect. An investigation is pending.

Sept. 17 Theft was reported in the 100 block of S. Linden at 1:37 p.m. A reporting officer responded to the above location after a witness reported seeing an unknown suspect take a package from his neighbor’s front porch. The suspected vehicle was located and the suspects were identified and arrested on scene. On Thursday, Sept. 23, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas announced that bond had been set at $2 million with 10% to apply for two individuals charged with carjacking a 35-year-old woman at gunpoint. Kentrell Strong, 18, of Chicago, and Rayshawn Marshall, 18, also of Chicago, appeared at a bond hearing in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 1:54 a.m., officers with the Villa Park Police Department responded to a call on Ardmore Avenue regarding a carjacking. An investigation into the matter revealed that the victim was sitting in the driver’s seat of her vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, which was parked in her driveway, when two male subjects wearing hoodies and face masks

allegedly approached the vehicle. It is alleged that one of the subjects asked the victim the time of day and then opened her car door and began to pull her out of the car. The second male subject then allegedly pointed a gun at her face. It is further alleged the two men pulled the victim out of the car and drove off in the victim’s car.

Elmhurst police officers observed the Jeep Cherokee on North Avenue and attempted to stop the car. The offenders refused to stop and continued driving at a high rate of speed onto I-290 eastbound. Police officers from multiple agencies, including Hillside, Maywood, Bellwood, Berkeley and Broadview all responded and helped chase the victim’s car. The offend-

DCHD releases statement on Pfizer-BioNTech booster vaccination Vaccination clinic at County Fairgrounds to re-open Oct. 13 On Friday, Sept. 24, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky has endorsed the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation for a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in certain populations and also recommended a booster dose for those in high risk occupational and institutional settings. The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authorization and CDC’s guidance for use are important steps forward to help end the pandemic.

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I recently had the privilege to speak at the Planned Parenthood Health Center in Aurora alongside Gov. J.B. Pritzker and U.S. Reps. Lauren Underwood and Bill Foster about our unwavering support of a woman’s right to choose.

As a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, I am deeply disturbed by the SB8 law in Texas. SB8 bans abortions after only six weeks— when most women barely know they’re pregnant—provides no exceptions for pregnancies from rape or incest, and it creates a bounty hunter system of citizen vigilantes.

We are in the midst of a global pandemic where we have learned the value of healthcare. And yet, Texas has decided to directly target women’s healthcare through an unconstitutional law. The constitution is not a buffet-style menu where a state can pick and choose the rights it upholds and the ones that it denies. A woman’s right to choose, like all constitutional rights, is federally guaranteed. Last week, the House was scheduled

to vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act, which I’m proud to cosponsor, in order to enshrine reproductive health care in law.

My investigation into conflicts of interest in the organ transplant industry study Through my position as chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, I am working with Rep. Katie Porter to investigate conflicts of interest among members of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) as they conduct a study into the organ transplant industry.

This study is crucial in determining reforms needed for the organ donation system, but we need to ensure that the experts responsible have the right, objective intentions.

My subcommittee has requested documents pertaining to the financial ties that members of NASEM have to the organ procurement industry.

Hospital a ‘real gem’ on the south side of town, reader says I just wanted to express some thoughts about two recent visits to the emergency room at Elmhurst Hospital and to say a great big thank you to all of the staff. Last month, a member of my family slipped on something on the floor at Aldi’s and cut the back of her head on the cart.

Someone had called the paramedics and they came and checked her out.

They said we needed to go to the ER to get it taken care of, probably needing stitches. We drove to the ER and I came through the main entrance. We did wait a while but as the bleeding had stopped, it was not critical that she be rushed in ahead of patients with more pressing needs. I cannot say enough about the professionalism exhibited by all who attended to her. I was particularly impressed with the attending physician. She was very attentive and helpful. My family member had concerns about what the back of her head would look like as we were attending a wedding that week. The doctor indicated she could use a couple of staples and

would not need to shave the area. We were most appreciative of that.

This month another family member started having an irregular heartbeat so we drove her to the ER. They attended to her immediately. She commented to me several times how great the care was in the ER by both doctors and the nurses. She ended up being admitted and the excellent care just continued.

I cannot say enough about the excellent care provided by all who attended to both of my family members.

I have been involved with the hospital for several years on different boards and committees, so I was well-aware of what an excellent facility and staff Elmhurst Hospital has, but I don’t think a lot of people in the community realize what a real gem we have on the south end of town. The affiliation with Edward has only made it that much better. I would encourage you to stop by and see for yourself what a great facility it is.

This column is dedicated to busy, and those of us who might describe ourselves as such.

We’ve all been there. Most of us are probably there right now.

As far as busy goes, those of us in the club are members of two different factions.

The first: People who are really too busy.

I feel for us. We are overextended and scrambling because gosh darn it, we have to! We might work multiple jobs, not because it brings us joy, but because how else are the mortgage and new car payments going to get paid?

In addition, there are the kids.

They’ve got to learn busy at an early age, so there’s taxiing them to private oboe lessons (It’s important to learn individual strengths and skills.) and soccer practice (Teamwork teaches life lessons.)

And that’s just the start. We haven’t slept more than five or six hours a night in the last 10 years because when else will the laundry get done? And then there’s cleaning the house on the day before the housekeeper comes. Exhausting.

Busy is a full-time job; heck, it’s a full-time life. The days buzz by without us hardly noticing because it’s all become a whirr. It’s the business of busyness and many of us are like blind mice running in perpetuity on that proverbial wheel.

If only we could find a way to step off and quit

running in place!

Be careful what you might wish for. Because then we might find ourselves as members of the second group: People who merely think they are too busy.

It’s hard to distinguish those of us truly in the first group (too busy) from those of us in the second (want to be too busy). Neither group has harnessed calm or tranquility. How could you when you are so busy you can’t think straight enough to know if you are actually busy or just hallucinating the state?

Neither brings balance or harmony into our lives, yet we continue to live it out, day after day, week after week, year after year. Running on that darn wheel, never getting anywhere.

The only perk about the illusion of being busy, versus busy in the true sense, is that with the illusion you have more time to complain to others about how busy you are.

This, in many circles, is what is known as a status symbol. The busier you are the more status you accrue. I’m proud to announce that at one point I was a multimillionaire busyness professional.

My monthly calendar was so full of meetings, activities, commitments

and committees I had to color-code it with a rainbow of highlighters. Yeah, I was that cool.

Those were the days.

These days, I suppose I’m not as busy as I was then. (Please don’t tell anyone. I don’t want to lose rank or reputation among my busy friends.)

In fact, I make it a point to meditate every day, which is just about the opposite of busy if ever there was one.

One of my favorite guided meditations includes the following statement: “I am at peace with doing nothing.” I kid you not.

The first time I heard it, I stopped in my tracks. We have reached the point in our busy, busy lives where we have to consciously tell ourselves it is OK to not be busy, to do nothing, to be in the moment and be OK with that.

Meditation is all about calming one’s mind. It takes the spotlight off busy and into the peace within. It is breathing and focus and finding an inner calm — all at the same time — which, if you think about it, is actually multitasking. Gasp. Consider the enormity of this statement.

I am.

Meditation is the act of being busy by not being busy, which is a winwin if I ever heard one.

Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis for income-eligible households through May 31, 2022. There will be no priority groups this program year.

Households in need are encouraged to apply.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides one-time benefits to income eligible homeowners and renters to help with energy bills and for reconnection of energy service. Propane customers are encouraged to apply to take advantage of lower propane prices, which typically increase during the winter months.

Households must be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level to receive a benefit from the LIHEAP Program. Households have the option to accept a one-time payment to the utility provider or enroll in Percentage of Income Payment Plan, a monthly benefit for applicants who make a predetermined monthly payment.

PIPP is available for LIHEAP-eligible households who are customers of one of the following utilities: Ameren Illinois, ComEd, Nicor Gas, North Shores Gas, and Peoples Gas. PIPP applicants will be enrolled on a first-come, first-serve basis, and the program will be offered until March 31, 2022, or when the program has reached the maximum household capacity.

The 30-day income guidelines for

LIHEAP and PIPP are based on federal poverty guidelines, state median income, and the number of persons living in the household. A single-person household can qualify for the PIPP Program with a monthly gross income of up to $2,147; a two-person household up to $2,903; a three-person household up to $3,660; and a family of four can earn up to $4,417.

DCHP: Vaccines work at preventing COVID-19 severe illness yet eligible for vaccination.”

According to the latest CDC COVID-19 vaccination data, 88 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older in DuPage County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 70 percent are fully vaccinated.

Of residents 65 years and older, 99.9 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 85 percent are fully vaccinated.

However, among 12- to 17-yearolds in DuPage County, 78 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and only 59 percent are fully vaccinated.

To help reduce spread in schools and the community, all unvaccinated persons aged 12 years and older are urged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

The DCHD is actively monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 boosters for fully vaccinated people.

The Illinois Supreme Court has extended its order limiting judgements in certain eviction cases to Oct. 3, putting it in line with the governor’s latest executive order.

The only thing changed in the Supreme Court order was the date it is set to expire, from Sept. 18 to Oct. 3.

It still prevents dispositive motions, trials on the merits or judgments in residential eviction proceedings against a “covered person.” Eviction cases can otherwise proceed as normal.

Covered persons include those who expect to earn less than $99,000 individually or $198,000 in a joint filing household, if they’ve experienced financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tenant must also certify they are making “best efforts to make timely partial payments that are as close to the full payment” as “circumstances permit.”

An eviction case can be exempt from the order if the landlord can prove they shared the necessary documentation with the tenant but did not receive proof that the tenant qualified as a covered person. Landlords can also seek a judgement if a rental aid application has been denied or if the tenant refused to apply for one.

In a news release, the court said the extension will allow more renters to apply for aid through a courtbased rental assistance program which launched earlier this month and received $60 million in funding.

That program would allow a tenant to receive up to 12 months of pastdue rent and three months in future rent, provided they can prove a loss of income due to COVID-19.

The Supreme Court has required that any summons in an eviction case must be accompanied by a form informing the tenant and landlord of the court-based program. It includes information on the program, what

documentation is needed and the web address for the court-based aid, ilrpp. ihda.org. The Illinois Housing Development Authority call center can be reached at 866-454-3571.

mittee recommended a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster dose for individuals 65 years of age and older and at high risk of severe COVID-19.

These booster dose plans are dependent on a full clinical review and recommendations provided by the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which was scheduled to conduct this review on Sept. 22-23. DCHD will share additional updates as more information becomes available.

York and IC Catholic Prep football teams become playoff eligible Timothy Christian and IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball teams each win a pair of matches

Both Elmhurst high schools’ football teams are in good playoff shape.

York and IC Catholic Prep both won their respective Week 5 games to both improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season.

Getting to five wins means both teams are now eligible for IHSA state playoff consideration. A sixth win by each team would automatically punch a playoff ticket.

York was a 14-7 West Suburban Conference Silver Division winner

over Lyons Township in Week 5. The win moved York to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in WSC Silver play. York’s last playoff appearance was 2011 and the Dukes last started a season 5-0 in 2010.

Each team scored a touchdown in the second quarter, while York scored the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter.

York heads to Glen Ellyn to face Glenbard West Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a game that has WSC Silver implications. York leads the Silver at 3-0 with perennial state power Glenbard West (5-0 overall) at 2-0 (West played Addison Trail in a WSC crossover in Week 5).

Senior Nakiyan Weathers had six carries for 110 yards and scored a touchdown. Malik Gray ran seven times for 106 yards and scored two touchdowns, IC Catholic Prep ran for 228 yards on only 16 rushes (14.3 yards per carry).

Outlook: The Knights had to sit out last week after Aurora Central Catholic forfeited its Week 5 contest (presumably due to pandemicrelated issues). Up next is a Wheaton Academy team that has outscored opponents 205-38 and is on a four-game winning streak.

Both teams should have good film to work off, considering their last games were against Ridgewood. Wheaton Academy opened the season with a 3-point loss to Brookfield East out of Wisconsin (which was 4-0 heading into Week 4), but then took care of Christ the King, Aurora Central Catholic, Bishop McNamara and Ridgewood. Those four teams were 4-12 heading into Week 4. Never bet against IC Catholic Prep and this week wouldn’t be a good time to start.

Outlook: York’s biggest game in quite a number of years occurs Saturday when it faces perennial West Suburban Conference Silver Division and state power Glenbard West. A win guarantees York a spot in the playoffs and puts the Dukes in very good position in terms of the WSC Silver race. York leads the conference at 3-0. One key note about York, its defense has allowed outputs of 7, 0, 0, 10 and 7 points this season. Significant because Glenbard West has scored 50, 49, 60, 63 and 56 points in its five victories. In three of those five wins, the Hilltoppers’ opponent has failed to score a point. However, those wins came against five teams with a combined 2-18 record heading into Week 5. Should be a fun Saturday matinee game in Glen Ellyn.

Abby VanderWal had 11 kills and six digs, while Sadie Orange had five kills and one ace. Amanda Leibrock had four kills, while Sierra Rieger had 22 assists, one ace and five digs. Abi Alonzo had 10 digs.

The win moved Timothy to 9-10 overall.

The Trojans also defeated Aurora Central Catholic 25-20, 25-14 in

a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contest to move to 2-1 in league play.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team was a 22-25, 25-20, 26-24 winner over Chicago Christian. Ava Falduto had 16 kills, 16 digs, two assists and one ace. Claire Wagner had 20 kills, 11 digs and one ace. Lucy Russ had 34 assists, 16 digs, one ace and two kills. Alysa Lawton added 12 digs, while Allie Geiger had two kills and four blocks.

In a 25-9, 25-9 win over Aurora Christian, Wagner had six kills and four digs.

Falduto had four kills, four digs and two aces.

Russ had 16 assists, five digs and two aces, while Geiger had three kills and four blocks. The win moved the Knights to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play.

York boys cross country team faring well in big meets Dukes second at Peoria Notre Dame; Summer takes third in massive 457-runner field

The York boys cross country team recently returned to a familiar haunt for the first time in 22 months and once again performed well on the grandest state of them all.

York ran at the Richard Spring invitational hosted by Peoria Notre Dame at Detweiller Park, home of the IHSA cross country state finals.

It was the Dukes’ first time on the famed course in 22 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

York finished second in the prestigious meet with 129 points. Sandburg won the championship with 63 points. Oswego, which had beaten York at an invite earlier this season, was third with 137 points.

York senior Ethan Summer finished third in the field of 457 runners in a time of 14:42.

Senior Jeff Luka took 11th at 15:00, while Garrett Schwan, also a senior, was 21st in 15:09. Senior Colin Lewandowski was 44th in 15:31, while senior Eric Rutherford was 51st in 15:37. Junior Payton Bryk was 76th in 15:51 and junior Daniel O’Shaughnessy was 90th in 15:59.

York took sixth in the same meet in 2019 and had a high place-finisher of 15th.

Dukes coach Charlie Kern noted all York runners reached the first 400 between 59 and 64 seconds

with Summer, Schwan, Luka and Rutherford hitting the 800 mark in the 2:13 to 2:14 area with Lewandowski (2:16), Bryk (2:19) and O’Shaughnessy (2:24) not far behind. York’s top four runners hit the mile mark under 4:50.

“Well-positioned,” Kern said in his usual update to York cross country alums.

“The goal was to move up through the field. Since the entire field was out fast, we still had opportunities to move up during the last two miles.”

Kern said the most significant move was made by Summer, who was 13th going into the back loop of the course. Summer moved greatly, coming out in sixth and moved up to fourth by the two-mile mark.

Kern noted at the two-mile mark the team race was still undecided with Sandburg having a strong hold on first with Oswego second and York third.

“The boys would have to move up if they wanted to close the gap on Sandburg and avenge the loss the week before to Oswego,” he said. “We did close the gap and leapfrogged over Oswego, but could not catch Sandburg, which was incredibly impressive on this day. What we did is prove we are a very good team with a lot more improvement on the horizon. We will continue to improve as we become more race ready.”

York’s team top-five average was 15:12. Sandburg’s was 14:58 “The last time we ran at Peoria Notre Dame we finished sixth

(without Ethan Kern) with a team average of 15:24 and went on to win the sectional, finish third at state, second at Nike Midwest and 12th at Nike Nationals,” Kern pointed out. “We know each year is different, but I think (this year’s race at Peoria Notre Dame) will give the current Dukes confidence, knowing they are as good or better than the guys they used to look up to.”

An interesting note, a team from Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon was part of the field. That team is coached by former York boys standout Eric Dettman.

A week earlier, York took second at the Steelman invitational in Joliet. Oswego won it with 29 points.

The Dukes had 48.

“The race did provide us with the rust buster we needed,” Kern said.

“We saw some athletes get their first opportunity to run varsity-level competition. I am certain the experience will pay dividends down the road.”

Rutherford finished seventh in 15:53 and was York’s first runner through the chute.

Luka was eighth in 16:10, while Schwan was ninth in 16:13. Lewandowski was 10th in 16:15 and Bryk was 14th in 16:34.

York competed against Hinsdale Central in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division junior-varsity meet.

York defeated Hinsdale Central with Emmet Doyle winning the race. Aidan Hill was second and Simon Hildy was third. Luke Lestina finished sixth, while Joel Kattoor was eighth.

“We have great team chemistry,” he said. “The girls were very happy to have a regular golf season after last year and they are looking forward to regionals (this week in Mt. Prospect). We take it one hole at a time and forget about the last hole.

We are looking to play our best team golf as the postseason begins and work to get the team to sectionals.”

Park Place Community identifies a love of nature Residents spearhead tree-naming project across campus School Prairie Garden. The two became involved in the tree-naming project and started literally from the ground up.

Together, they tracked down the original plan for the Park Place campus to identify what had been planted initially. Through countless walks through the grounds, calling in the help of a local landscaper, and diligently studying various plans and plants, the pair was able to help identify 22 different tree species that call the Park Place grounds home. Once the tree species were identified and counted, Jane and Carole worked to order signs featuring both the common and Latin name for each tree and map out a route for a tour of the trees, easily allowing others to enjoy the views.

At Park Place, the walking tours have been affectionally dubbed “Tree Treks.” The Tree Treks have helped the donor realize his vision of providing Park Place residents with added education and enjoyment when walking the campus.

For Jane and Carole, the tree-naming project was a labor of love: a love of nature and the Park Place community.

What makes Park Place so enchanting? It starts with the campus: its landscaping and its grounds.

An anonymous Park Place resident offered a donation that would help transform the campus into what might pass for a miniature arboretum. He is in the habit of walking the campus for exercise and often wondered about the many tree species. He offered to underwrite the cost of signs to identify the trees, an idea that would help enhance the Park Place grounds in a major way.

After a blessing from Executive Director Beth McGowan-Welch, the donor enlisted two fellow residents to help his vision come to life.

(Reprinted with permission from The First Ladies of Elmhurst: Prominent Women of the Twentieth Century, the Independent has obtained permission from the Elmhurst History Museum to print stories from the book, published in 2001, recalling the outstanding women who have helped form our community. This week, we bring you Margaret Chant Papandreou. Some portions have been edited.)

The first time I met Margaret Papandreou she was wearing a beautiful blue suit and I remember thinking she looked so young to be the First Lady of Greece. As a member of the American Association of University Women I was excited because Margaret was scheduled to give a talk to our Elmhurst Branch on April 28, 1983. Her topic was, “The Greek Government’s Program for Equality For Women.” It was a time when the women’s movement in this country was making some progress, so we were all interested in how our sisters were faring in faraway Greece. Margaret would be the perfect person to tell us. After all, she grew up in Elmhurst, was an American, and was familiar with the politics of both countries. I was curious, though. How did a typical York High School student like Margaret Chant (Class of 1941) become the wife of the Prime Minister of Greece?

To begin with, Margaret was not your average teenager. Yes, she played basketball, participated in school activities and was popular.

But while most girls probably were more interested in boys, Margaret admits that she regularly read Time and Newsweek magazines. When she was only 12 years old, she par-

ticipated in the political campaign of her grandfather who was a Socialist Party candidate for the Illinois State Legislature. The oldest daughter of Hulda Anne (Pfund) and Douglas G. Chant, Margaret was born on September 30, 1923. For most of her childhood she lived at 145 Clinton Street in Elmhurst with her parents and four sisters, Evelyn (12/17/24), twins Patricia and Marcella (9/3/30), and Joanne (2/10/35).

College and finding true love She attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a B.A. in Journalism in 1946 and a M.A. in Public Health in 1956. While a college student, she actively worked on Hubert Humphrey’s political campaign and was a founding member of the Adlai Stevenson Forum. In 1948 at the age of 24, Margaret already was running a public relations firm called Chant, Inc. in Minneapolis.

One day while on assignment, she unexpectedly met Andreas Papandreou in a dentist’s office. Although born in Greece, Andreas had become an American citizen and was educated at Harvard University. At the time they met he was an associate professor at the University of Minnesota teaching economics. Although they became friends, Margaret learned that Andreas was married. Margaret herself was to marry a fellow graduate student not long afterwards. For both Andreas and Margaret, however, their brief first marriages ended in divorce. On August 30, 1951 they were wed to each other. The couple had three children, George, Sophia and Nick. Then they moved to California, where Andreas taught at the University of California in Berkeley and their last son Andriko was born.

In 1959 after much discussion, Andreas and Margaret decided to move to Greece where Andreas’ father, George Papandreou, was head of the majority political party. Andreas worked at the Bank of Greece but he wanted to start a Greek Research Center. Progress with this endeavor was slow. A new life in a new country was very difficult for Margaret and the children. So they all returned to the United States for one year (1961-62) after her fatherin-law George Papandreou’s Center Union party lost in fixed elections.

But Margaret returned to Greece with her husband and family once again in June of 1963. When George Papandreou’s party next won an election with a huge 53% of the popular vote, Margaret’s husband, Andreas, became the acting Minister of Ministry of Coordination. During the days of the Papandreou government many reforms were started in the areas of civil liberties and education. Margaret herself initiated two projects: a school feeding program with assistance from CARE, and a clothing drive for the mountain villages. One of the main contributors of clothes was Margaret’s alma mater, York Community High School, in her hometown of Elmhurst.

drastically difficult turn. A military coup d’etat forced a Junta dictatorship in Greece. There were many arrests and tortures. Margaret’s husband Andreas was brutally kidnapped from the family home and put in a small, solitary cell in the Averoff Prison. He was charged with conspiracy to commit high treason and awaited a trial.

Living daily in a state of tremendous fear and anxiety for both her husband and family, Margaret was determined to get Andreas out of prison. She schemed, wrote secret letters, held clandestine meetings, made mysterious phone calls, plotted and was reported to have been involved in the underground resistance. Her sister Evelyn (Chant) Seegers recalled, “Here in the United States all of our family members and my sister’s American friends wrote countless letters beseeching Washington politicians and diplomats for Andreas’ release. My sister Joanne saw President Lyndon Johnson one day at the airport in Texas. She pushed her way to the fence and shouted, ‘Please release Andreas from jail in Greece!’

The President kept walking. He then abruptly turned and said to my sister, ‘It won’t be long.’”

When the coup finally ended, Andreas was mercifully released and the family immediately went to Sweden and then into exile in Canada. While there, Margaret wrote in 1970 the intriguing book, Nightmare in Athens, in which she described in detail the frightening tale of her experiences during the military take-over. After reading her incredible story, I realized what a brave and courageous person Mararet Papandreou is. Evelyn proudly says, “My sister is a survivor!”

Becoming First Lady of Greece Several years later, after the dictatorship fell, Andreas and Margaret returned to Greece with their children. was elected Prime Minister. Margaret “Margarita” Papandreou became First Lady of Greece. She was most active in the women’s movement and in 1976 had helped found the Woman’s Union of Greece, a nationwide, independent feminist organization.

She served as the President from 1981-89. Margaret once commented, “The only thing women had when I got there was the right to clean the house!” Evelyn recalls further that when her sister saw the plight of the average Greek woman she remarked, “They are 50 years behind the women of the United States!”

In Margaret’s position of authority she has managed to affect major reforms in the area of women’s rights over the years. For example, many laws pertaining to family life have been changed. Tradition no longer demands bridal dowries. Now women may use their own names, work without their husband’s approval, own their own business and mutually make family legal decisions. In 1981 Margaret helped establish the “Council on Equality between the Sexes” (later called the “Secretariat of Equality”). This government agency coordinates research and legislative action on all matters relating to equal rights for women in Greece. In 1986 the first shelter for battered Greek women was opened in Athens. Today there are childcare centers, and both boys and girls go to school together where they are getting unbiased educations.

In an effort to promote world peace, her number one priority, Margaret often had assisted women in mobilizing the movement. Many discussions and peace conferences were held in Greece (1986) and other NATO countries. Margaret herself has traveled extensively to help with humanitarian aid in European countries oppressed or at war. As the founder of Women For Mutual Security, an international network of women’s peace organizations, she has seen her group of six women grow to a membership of over thirty

thousand.

In 1991 Margaret organized a group of these women and brought them to Baghdad to work on a peace plan in an attempt to avert the Gulf War. In 1995 Women For Mutual Security conducted two workshops on “Women and the Mass Media” and “Refugee Women” at the International United Nations Conference on Women held in Beijing. Margret has initiated or participated in many peace efforts, including a campaign for a woman Secretary General of the United Nations. She collaborated on humanitarian actions for the people of Yugoslavia and spoke about that country’s situation in Canada in 1997. Historically Greece and Turkey have been at odds.

But by 1999 Margaret had tried to bridge the differences by arranging for Greek women to meet and talk with the Turkish women through a network named WINPEACE (Turkish-Greek) Women’s Initiative for Peace. She continues to serve as the Global Network Coordinator for WMS. Margaret once told her family, “If I didn’t do what I’m doing for the peace movement there might never be peace. It’s my passion. If it doesn’t happen in my lifetime, at least I did my part!”

Over the years Margaret has returned to the United States as often as possible to visit family, friends, and even students and staff at York High School.

Besides the political challenges, there have been many personal changes in Margaret’s life. In 1989 she and her husband Andreas divorced.

Her oldest son, George, has continued in his father’s political footsteps and recently was reelected Greece’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Although she suffered a mild heart attack in the summer of 1999, Margaret Papandreou continues her endeavors. And we who remember the bright young woman from Elmhurst, who truly became a First Lady, wish her well.
