Registered sex offender arrested for being at Emerson School

Police said that subsequent to a report of Frank J. Battaglia, 73, of Elmhurst, attending a school function at Emerson Elementary School on Feb. 7, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Aug. 21, Battaglia was charged with “felony child sex offender in a school zone.” He was taken into custody, posted bond and was released.

Last year, Battaglia was at the center of a controversy at Lake Park High School District 108. The Lake Park High School head football coach was fired after the district said in a statement the coach “failed to follow the required criminal background process and directed an assistant football coach to remove the

volunteer coach (Battaglia) from the list of names submitted to human resources for a background check.”

Even though Battaglia was a volunteer, all persons working with students, whether paid or unpaid, need to pass a background check.

Besides the coach being fired, the athletic director and the school principal were also subject to disciplinary action.

The incident that placed Battaglia on the registry of sexual offenders took place in 1991, when he was fired for touching the breasts of a 14-year-old girl who was a freshman at Driscoll Catholic High School in Addison. He pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a teenage girl in 1992.

For the past few weeks, the Independent has continued to bring its readers the news about an Elmhurst man who has been missing for nearly a month now.

Jake Cefolia, 49, is senior vice president of sales and marketing for United Airlines, which has put out an appeal on the UA website to urge anyone with information about Cefolia or the incident to please step forward.

He was last seen on Aug. 6 and

reported missing on Aug. 8. At press time, Cefolia had still not been found.

Shortly after he was reported missing, Cefolia’s vehicle was located near the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Lemont, where he often went for a run. Assuming something may have happened to him during a run, a search was launched of the Forest Preserve.

More details emerge from UA At the United Airlines web site, more information has been provided about Cefolia, in that it has now been 20 days since he went missing, and there still has been no sign of him.

The UA web site offered some further information that wasn’t previously available, which makes this entire situation “even stranger,” according to UA officials: • On Thursday, Aug. 6, Cefolia returned from California and was seen at home by family and coworkers.

• On Friday, Aug. 7, Cefolia missed a corporate event, however, he was seen on video getting gas at around 10 a.m., and was also seen on video entering Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, wearing hiking boots and khakis (which is not typically what a person would wear if he was going on a jog).

• He didn’t take any traceable devices with him, as his cell phone and Apple Watch were both found at home.

• On Saturday, Aug. 8, Cefolia was reported missing.

• On Monday, Aug. 10, Cefolia’s family hired a private investigator.

• On Friday, Aug. 14 and Saturday, Aug. 15, extensive searches of the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve were carried out.

• During the searches, articles of clothing were found, which were turned over to police. The found shoes were confirmed not to be Cefolia’s, but it’s not clear if a shirt that was found belonged to him.

• A rotting smell was also reported, but that turned out to be a decaying deer.

• Cefolia was trying to sell his Elmhurst home. It hit the market on June 16, had a price reduction on July 16, and had a further price reduction on Aug. 4, two days before he went missing.

It is unknown whether or not this information is significant to his disappearance.

The Elmhurst Police Department

was unable to comment on the ongoing investigation, other than to say they were working as hard as they could to reunite Cefolia with his family.

Elmhurst losing Pik a Pot n Paint to COVID-19 Family owned ceramics studio, open for 22 years, became staple of community

Elmhurst’s Pik a Pot n Paint ceramic studio is closing after 22 years of business. After closing in March due to Covid-19, it became difficult to keep up with bills, owner Marlene Schraut said. Marlene and her husband Don are sad to close it, but grateful for the overwhelming loyalty of their customers.

“It’s bittersweet,” Marlene said.

“But we’ve been very lucky.”

The ‘pottery playground’ offers an everchanging variety of ceramic pieces to be painted by customers.

Once the creations are done, employees place them in a kiln to finish them. Pik a Pot n Paint also hosts birthday parties and other events, such as baby showers or bridal parties.

The Schraut’s ceramic studio started out as no more than a hobby. They had owned and leased the property at 915 S York Road for 40 years. When their current tenant, a childcare center, left the property, Don suggested using it for themselves.

Marlene attended her niece’s birthday party at a ceramic painting studio and realized just how much she loved the idea. Since she studied art in college, she felt like a ceramic store would be the perfect fit.

“We just wanted to do it for our own enjoyment,” Marlene said.

After shopping for pieces and taking a class on ceramics, the Schrauts were ready to open. Marlene said Pik a Pot n Paint wasn’t busy at first, but after the official grand opening, things changed.

“It took off like wildfire,” she said.

“The line went around the block.”

With help from their family, the Schrauts began their journey to success. Marlene assisted customers and painted while Don ran the kilns. They built up a loyal following, along with dedicated employees, including their son and daughter. Marlene said she put everything she had into the business.

“When we first started, I did everything but sleep there for seven days a week,” she said. “It was our life.”

Customers began coming in regularly, especially children. Locals would come in every year to make gifts or holiday ornaments. Over the course of 22 years, the Schrauts built strong relationships within the community.

Marlene said she watched kids grow from children to young adults as they continuously came to Pik a Pot n Paint. One employee even said she has seen children come in when they were 5 years old, and later saw them as they were going away to college.

Loyal customer Kris Schwarz said she is taking all of her grandchildren to the studio one last time.

“We call it ‘date day’,” she said.

“We come here so much, half of the ceramics they have already painted!”

As a staple of the Elmhurst community, the studio was constantly busy. Marlene said as the years went on, she was able to slow down a bit and trust her dedicated staff to take care of things. She credits their suc-

cess to the motto of Pik a Pot n Paint: treat customers the way they would want to be treated. That is what it has always been about, Marlene said.

“We wanted people to have fun and enjoy themselves,” she said. “It wasn’t about the money.”

However, when COVID-19 hit, things took a turn. It was hard to run a small business and lose income, Marlene said. Pik a Pot n Paint closed in March and couldn’t open again until Aug. 5. Marlene said when they reopened, she and Don knew it was the end.

Their loyal customers were not done yet though, and continued to come in. Schwarz said her grandchildren want to paint one more piece as presents for their parents.

The studio is open three days a week now from noon-6 p.m.

“They all want to come in for one more memory,” Marlene said.

Closing the store was a long time coming for the Schrauts. Business had dropped off, and although it wasn’t what they wanted, Marlene said COVID-19 was the final push.

“I feel very sad,” she said. “I really love doing it. Every time I paint, I still get excited to see how it’s going to turn out.”

Despite the emotional end, the

Schrauts have 22 years of memories that Marlene said they will always look back on fondly.

They plan to close by the end of the year.

Keeping up with parents about in-person vs. remote learning Moyer told the board during the Aug. 25 meeting that district parents should get some updated communication on when their children can start to return to school buildings. Overview of safety measures in place Kevin Rubenstein, the district’s assistant superintendent for student services, gave a presentation during the Aug. 25 meeting about the district’s COVID-19 protocols and procedures. Rubenstein said the district receives regular updates from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the DuPage County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Rubenstein noted that the IDPH and the DuPage County Health Department don’t always provide consistent information.

Later in the meeting, Rubenstein said the district is required to follow guidelines set by the IDPH. Rubenstein noted that all of the district’s classrooms have been supplied with hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, face coverings, gloves, paper towels, disinfectant and spray bottles. In certain areas, the district has provided other personal protective equipment, including face shields.

The district is engaging in enhanced cleaning and disinfecting practices and is providing additional air flow to its buildings when possible.

Rubenstein told the board that if a

staff member or student should test positive for COVID-19, the district will work with the DuPage County Health Department to begin contact tracing in an attempt to notify potentially impacted people.

Rubenstein noted that District 205 students will have assigned seats in their classrooms when they return to school buildings for in-person instruction.

COVID-19 update given According to the DuPage County Health Department’s daily COVID-19 update on Aug. 29, there have been 533 COVID-19 related deaths among county residents. The first COVID-19 related death in the county took place on March 19. According to the county health department, there were 14 COVID-19 related deaths among county residents during March. There were 195 COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County in April, and another 195 COVID-19 related deaths in the county in May. According to the health department’s Aug. 29 update, there were 83 COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County in June, and 34 COVID-19 related deaths in the county in July. Through the Aug. 29 report, there had been 12 COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County during the month of August.

According to the IDPH, about 80 percent (424) of the 533 COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County involved residents of long-term care facilities. According to the DuPage County Health Department’s Aug. 29 update, 308 of the county’s 533 COVID-19 related deaths involved residents 80 years of age and older. Another 127 COVID-19 related deaths among county residents involved residents in the 70-79 age group, while another 60 COVID-19 related deaths involved residents in

their 60s. About 93 percent of the county’s COVID-19 related deaths, therefore, have involved residents 60 and older. None of the county’s 533 COVID-19 related deaths as of Aug. 29 involved residents under the age of 20.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on Sept. 8.

OCULAR HERPES

Everyone should be aware that the same strain of herpes virus that causes cold sores in the mouth (HSV-1) and the strain that causes genital herpes (HSV-2) can both infect the cornea of the eye. “Ocular herpes” causes symptoms such as eye redness, sores and inflammation, and it is the leading cause of infectious blindness in the United States. EWAN offers ‘Cue for a Cause In normal times, the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN) would be frantically making last minute preparations for its Labor Day Weekend fundraiser, the ‘Cue for a Cause. Amateur barbecue teams from around Elmhurst and beyond would be polishing up their grills and perfecting their rib, chicken, and sauce recipes to get ready for the big competition.

In case it has gone unnoticed, these are not normal times.

All is not lost though. On Sunday, Sept. 6 from 3:30-7:30 p.m., BBQ Jim’s will be keeping the spirit of the ‘Cue alive by selling barbecue from its food truck in the City lot at York and Vallette (Farmers Market lot).

On the menu are owner Jim Lawshe’s signature dishes of pulled pork and beef brisket with all the fixin’s.

Due to COVID-19, all food is togo—no table seating.

At a time when client assistance is up 82% over the previous year, it’s difficult for EWAN to have to cancel its major annual fundraising event.

The organization, which provides financial assistance to local families in need, has been offering a series of “In Lieu of the ‘Cue” events to make up for some of the lost revenue. “BBQ Jim’s for a Cause” is one of these events.

EWAN has also been offering tickets for a “Split the Pot Raffle for a Cause” throughout the summer.

The drawing of the winning ticket will occur at the end of the BBQ Jim’s event, at 7:30 p.m., and can be viewed live on EWAN’s Facebook page. Tickets will be available for sale at the food truck fundraiser or can be purchased any time before then on EWAN’s website, elmhurstwalkin.org. At press time, the pot was at $1,150.

near Roosevelt and York at around 2:06 a.m., the officer learned of a vehicle traveling eastbound Roosevelt Road at a high rate of speed.

The officer observed the speeding vehicle, which was reported stolen out of Chicago, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle accelerated and the officer did not pursue it.

Harassment, threats

Assault, battery Aug. 23 Police said officers responded to the 300 block of E. Crescent at around 5:09 p.m. for a battery report. A victim told police while she was gardening in her yard, an unknown suspect approached her from behind, pushed her, and used offensive language toward her. Officers searched the area with no results.

Aug. 22 John Pembor, 48, of Northlake, was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct in the 100 block of W. First at around 3:35 p.m. Police said officers responded to a complaint where Pembor was attempting to start a fight with a restaurant patron. Pembor allegedly ran from the reporting officer, turned around, and charged at the officer with clenched fists.

Aug. 20 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of W. Third at around 6:18 a.m. for the report of a female heard yelling for help. A reporting officer located the victim who stated her friend scratched and choked her. The suspect fled prior to officers’ arrival but was later contacted and stated he would later speak with officers. This case is pending investigation.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Aug. 26 A victim in the 100 block of N. Haven told police at around 1:18 p.m. that he parked his vehicle in the parking lot at the above address and observed a group of youths in the parking lot. The victim went into the building. A short time later, the victim returned to his vehicle and noticed two dents on the driver’s door.

Two rocks were found lying on the ground near the victim’s car and the group of youths had left the area.

Aug. 25-Aug. 26 A victim in the 100 block of S. Villa told police that an unknown suspect shattered her vehicle’s rear window while it was parked overnight in her driveway. A rock was found in the back seat of the victim’s vehicle.

Aug. 23 A victim in the 200 block of N. York told police at around 1:33 p.m. that an unknown suspect(s) keyed the front and rear driver’s side of his vehicle while it was parked on the east side of the Addison parking garage.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance Aug. 26 A victim in the 700 block of N. Willow told police at around 3:40 p.m. that while at his ex-girlfriend’s house, a verbal argument began

Lisseth Toscano Puentes, 31, of Franklin Park, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, driving without headlights when required, unsafe tire and no insurance near Lake and Grand at around 3:42 a.m.

Aug. 25 Ricardo Lizama-Garcia, 25, of Westchester, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of cannabis in a vehicle, speeding and no insurance near Roosevelt and York at around 3:21 a.m.

Aug. 23 Georgina P. Avitia, 31, of Cicero, was charged with DUI-drugs, possession of adultuse cannabis in a vehicle, failure to yield and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Kenilworth at around 1:03 p.m.

Donald Loresch, 27, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, speeding, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Highview and North at around 3:23 a.m.

Timothy L. Sanders, 28, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, improper turn and no rear registration light, while Latisha T. Triplett, 33, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in a vehicle near York and Cayuga at around 3:56 a.m.

John M. Weber, 33, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, no insurance and no rear registration light subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Second at around 2:38 a.m.

Aug. 21 Alexus Barnes, 24, of Franklin Park, was charged with illegal possession of alcohol, illegal possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 7:33 p.m.

Matthew Willoughby, 29, of Forest Park, was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance subsequent to a vehicle crash near York and Second at around 12:24 p.m.

Aug. 19 A victim in the 100 block of E. Fremont advised at 1:53 p.m. that she had been receiving numerous telephone calls from an unknown suspect claiming to be a caseworker with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. The victim stated she does not have any pending cases with DCFS. A reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect but was met with no results. An investigation is pending.

Obstruction Aug. 26 Anthony P. Cantore, 23, of Bloomingdale, was charged with obstructing identification in the 500 block of W. North at around 2:06 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle, Cantore provided the reporting officer with a fictitious name and date of birth. According to police, Cantore admitted to the officer that he provided a false name.

Aug. 23 Matthew S. Kentra, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for obstructing a police officer and possession of alcohol by a minor near Spring and Eggleston at around 2 a.m. According to police, while on patrol, an officer observed Kentra who was allegedly in possession of a can of beer and appeared to be under the age of 21. Upon seeing the officer, police said Kentra fled on foot into a wooded area.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Aug. 21 Kenneth W. Ankebrant, 70, of Chicago, was charged with possession of a controlled substance in the 600 block of N. York at around 9:24 p.m. Police said a second suspect—who was attempting to steal merchandise from a store—was observed running from the store to an awaiting vehicle driven by Ankebrant. A search of the vehicle yielded two glass crack pipes and several baggies containing cocaine residue, according to police the second suspect was arrested, made suicidal statements to officers, and was transported to a hospital, according to police. Police said an arrest warrant containing the charges of possession of a controlled substance, felony retail theft and burglary were obtained for the second suspect, police said.

Aug. 20 Layton Norris, 58, of Villa Park, was issued citations for possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle and expired registration subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake at around 10:05 a.m.

Melvin Sykes, 23, of Chicago, and a juvenile suspect were issued citations for possession of cannabis and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at around 10:46 a.m.

Aug. 24 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Wilson told police at around 2:15 p.m. that a suspect described as a white male between 55 and 60 years old, around 6 feet, 170 pounds with gray hair, balding with some facial hair, pulled up in front of his house in a gray or silver older 4-door sedan and walked up to where he was playing basketball. The complainant went into the house and observed the suspect looking through the front window. The suspect was seen walking in front of the neighbor’s house where a boy used a hose to spray the suspect’s feet as he was getting closer to him. The suspect got into his vehicle and drove off.

Aug. 26 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:43 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect exited the south side doors without paying for two vacuum cleaners. The suspect entered the passenger side of an awaiting Honda Civic with stolen license plates. It was later determined that the license plate on the suspect’s vehicle had been stolen from a vehicle parked nearby. The area was checked with no results.

It was determined that the license plate on the suspect’s vehicle was taken from a victim’s car while it was parked at an apartment complex.

Aug. 25 Forgery was reported at a gas station in the 600 block of W. North at around 11:50 p.m.

A complainant told police that a suspect described as a black male in his late 20s, around 5’5” and 125 pounds with a dark complexion, short black hair, wearing a gray face mask, a white shirt and black shorts entered the store and attempted to purchase cigars with a fictitious $20 bill. Upon being notified that the bill was counterfeit, the suspect quickly left the store and entered a small SUV, which left the scene southbound on Route 83. The counterfeit bill was placed into evidence.

Aug. 24-Aug. 25 Theft by deception was reported in the 200 block of N. York. A victim told police he received a call from an unknown female suspect who stated she was his granddaughter and needed cash for bail. The victim sent the money to the provided address. The victim received a call the following day requesting more cash. The victim was advised by his daughter that this was a scam and not to send any more money.

Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of S. Spring. A victim told police she was notified of several unauthorized charges on her debit card. The bank froze the victim’s account and did not allow charges to be processed.

Aug. 24 Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of W. Belden at around 3:21 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through Maine’s Department of Labor.

DuPage County announces new schedule for COVID-19 testing site Beginning Monday, Aug. 31, the DuPage County Community Based Testing Site (CBTS) will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 12 noon, or until 600 tests are completed each day.

The drive-through CBTS opened June 16 on the DuPage County Complex for residents of DuPage County to be tested for COVID-19. The

Piling it on in 2020

The year 2020: Wow, in hindsight who could have seen this coming?

I thought we’d been through it all. A pandemic.

The lockdown. The economy suffering because of the lockdown and pandemic. Family members losing jobs. My youngest son missing out on his last semester of high school.

Virtual graduation.

What else could possibly happen? Ha! I had to ask.

I thought the first six months of 2020 were taxing – a challenge in flexibility and change. A challenge in faith and country and leadership. I thought there weren’t any more possible challenges to tackle.

And then I lived out the last 12 days.

In less than two weeks time, here’s the trifecta that’s unfolded in my life: 1. I brought my 18 year-old son 1,300 miles across the country to college and left him there, only hoping he’ll do well, go to class and learn how to sort his own laundry. Oh, and of course wear his mask (or face covering, depending on your preference). Now he’s coming up against the reality of his first hurricane, although to him “It’s just a tropical storm, mom, no big deal.”

2. I lost my dad to non-COVID illness and advanced age. I hadn’t been able to see him since the lockdown. He was in a nursing home. My sister was able to be with him in his last days and that brings me comfort.

Finally, I’ve saved the best for last (truly).

3. Upon returning home from bringing my son to college (all my tears were dry by this time) I was blessed with a grandson.

He was born during COVID so we weren’t able to see him right away. No visitors were allowed at the hospital.

I like to think I live a fairly boring life, but this latest trifecta has been anything but – in hearttugging ways, in sad ways and in the very best of ways. Life can be complicated. It often is.

My son was supposed to follow us across the country, not the other way around. We had a move planned, but because of COVID everything about

Reader disappointed in recent sports photos, coverage of private schools I am a long-time reader of the Independent and am writing to express my recent dissatisfaction.

I am in total agreement with reader Jay D. Stein and his observation that the great majority of your sports pictures feature players without masks.

For example, in the Aug. 27 issue, yes the girls on the cover have masks but in 4 pages of sports coverage in later pages I note only 2 players with masks; one on p. 19 and 1 on p. 21.

This is certainly counter to what we have been told to do. Perhaps our local police officers could offer polite directives to persons without masks that they come across.

On another issue, countless recent articles reported on the indecisiveness of District 205 and how it

planned to open the school year. Elmhurst is fortunate to also have several private schools which have made the decisions to do what is best for the students and open at least partially in person. I have not seen one article about any of our private schools.

Furthermore, a while back I expressed concern at the rising number of COVID cases in Elmhurst and neighboring suburbs and asked that city officials offer some reasons why they think the numbers are rising. I received a reply stating that my concerns would be addressed, but never received a follow-up. I am requesting once again that our city officials address these concerns.

Neighbor delivers anonymous letter objecting to flag in yard Reader sticks up for freedom of speech, expression against ‘bully’ I am writing this letter in response to the young girl who put an unsigned letter in my mailbox regarding a flag that is in our yard. She apparently finds it offensive. With no knowledge of my family, she tells me that I am spreading hatred. The letter inaccurately states that I have “Blue Lives Matter” apparel, then goes on to make a lot of assumptions about my beliefs. She then gives her version of events that have happened across the U.S. After she believes that she has properly “schooled” me with her opinions, I am then given a list of online petitions where I can go to dutifully show my support for the black community.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind our youth that we, as Americans, are entitled to our own opinions and beliefs. There are no laws that force us to take marching orders from one group of people or another. This is the land of the free

and the home of the brave. I have tremendous respect for both of these ideas. The “free” piece of it allows you to have a position and I can use my free-thinking mind to arrive at a different position. The “brave” is for the men and women who have protected our free country for many years. It’s for my grandfather that went to fight as a 17-year-old boy in World War II. It’s for all people that put their life on the line every single day.

If in fact you feel so strongly about your personal opinions, there are countless meaningful ways to help – more helpful than an unsigned letter.

Many communities of color are losing their children in great numbers to violence, they would definitely benefit from your principles. There are many volunteer opportunities readily available. Please consider relocating to these areas, volunteering in shelters, mentoring at the boys and

girls after-school clubs or becoming a court liaison for these children. All would be tremendously impactful.

I applaud you for standing up for a group that you believe is being oppressed. What I find so contradictory is that you are attempting to oppress my voice and the God-given right to my opinion.

Delivering an unsigned letter after dark doesn’t make you a hero. Your attempt to bully me into submission will not work. If my Thin Blue Line flag is so offensive, I suggest you drive down another street. When I see things that go against my belief system, I simply pay no attention to it. I respect my fellow Americans that have differing opinions. I am an American who is protected by laws.

The flag will continue to fly and I suggest that “We The People” stand for what we hold sacred.

Despite Elmhurst’s changes, reader appreciates police, fire, ComEd

I have lived in Elmhurst since 1960. We moved here for our children to attend highly rated schools.

My husband became a 7th Ward Alderman. A lot has changed, some good and some not so good. It has Carol Jamieson lost its small-town personality. It has

become concrete and brick condos everywhere instead of green space.

The one thing that has not changed is our great police and fire departments. They are the very best. I have never heard one complaint about either. The other people who deserve a

thank-you are the people who work for ComEd. They are out there in all kinds of weather day and night in a very dangerous job. I would like to thank all of them.

Bond denied for 2 Cook County men accused of breaking into homes in Lombard, Wheaton leged that Johnson was pointing a gun at him and asked “where’s the money?” It is further alleged that Pitts went to the upstairs bedroom where the mother and her daughter were sleeping in the same bed. It is alleged that Pitts ordered them to the main floor of the residence.

It is further alleged that Pitts then ordered the daughter to the basement and ordered her to remove her clothing.

It is alleged that when the girl refused and fled, a physical struggle ensued between the father and Pitts.

It is alleged that the struggle went into the back yard of the residence leaving Johnson with a gun behind them.

It is alleged that during the struggle, Johnson fired two gunshots, one striking the father in the chest and one into the family car.

It is alleged that the gunshot that hit the father, went through him and ultimately struck Pitts as well. It is alleged that Johnson and Pitts then fled the scene in the same stolen vehicle driven by Jackson.

“The conduct alleged in these charges is shockingly violent and demonstrates a complete disregard for our laws and for human life,” Berlin said. “The victims in this case had every right to feel safe in their own home, the one place everyone should feel safe. That sense of safety has now been shattered.

But the residents of DuPage County should take comfort in knowing they have some incredibly dedicated and talented police officers in their community who will do everything they can to protect the people of DuPage County.

“Make no mistake, today’s charges and no-bond orders send a loud and clear message to would-be criminals that if you commit violent crimes in DuPage County, you will be caught, you’ll be arrested and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

“In the middle of the night, it is alleged that these three defendants threatened the safety, security and very lives of two unsuspecting, innocent families,” Murphy said. “I can’t begin to imagine the terror the victims must have felt when they were allegedly awoken by the defendants. Thankfully all three de-

Malik Pitts, 22, of Broadview; Isaiah Johnson, 21, of Blue Island; and Keytori Jackson, 22, of Broadview, appeared in bond court Aug. 30 where Judge Timothy McJoynt denied bond for Pitts and Johnson and set bond at $500,000 with 10 percent to apply for Jackson.

At approximately 5:04 a.m. Aug. 23, Wheaton Police officers responded to 1700 block of E. Evergreen St. in Wheaton for a home invasion. Residents reported that they heard noises coming from outside.

The homeowners exited the back door leaving the door unlocked at which time they allegedly observed Pitts and Johnson. It is alleged that Johnson pointed a silver handgun at them as Pitts entered the residence by the back door.

It is further alleged that shortly after Pitts entered the residence, Johnson directed the victims to walk towards the rear of the residence with the gun.

Once inside, it is alleged that Pitts had entered a bedroom where two young girls and their grandmother were sleeping. Pitts allegedly attempted to pull down the blanket and shorts of one of the girls. It also is alleged that at this time the grandmother woke up and spoke to Pitts at which time he struck her left cheek, ear and neck. The girls’ father entered the room and fought with Pitts. It is alleged that the men then fled the scene in a stolen car driven by Jackson.

At approximately 5:22 the same morning, the Lombard Police Department responded to a call in the 400 block of S. Highland Ave. for a home invasion and shooting that just occurred.

It is alleged that the male homeowner was awoken by Pitts and Johnson in his living room. It is al-

Expiration of driver’s licenses extended one year for Illinois seniors 75 or older

By Rebecca Anzel Driver’s licenses for Illinoisans 75 or older are valid one extra year beyond the currently listed 2020 expiration date, Secretary of State Jesse White has announced.

Those roughly 147,000 seniors do not need to visit a motor vehicle facility until just prior to their birthday in 2021, the office said in a news release, noting it will inform qualifying residents in a letter.

The secretary of state’s records were updated to reflect this change, and officials notified national and state law enforcement as well.

“I am mindful of the heightened risks associated with seniors contracting COVID-19, and that is why I have authorized this important change during this

challenging and unique time,” White said in a written statement.

His office has the statutory authority to extend these deadlines by up to one year.

The expiration date for all other Illinoisans’ driver’s licenses and plate stickers was pushed to Nov. 1. The office is encouraging residents not to visit a driver services facility for matters that can be handled online.

“Especially during hot weather,” residents “do not need to rush into” facilities where “heavy customer volume” is expected,” the office said in a news release.

Since White opened his offices a few weeks ago, numerous reports have documented long lines that stretch outside and around buildings.

The facilities were previously closed due to the threat of COVID-19 spread.

EWAN Executive Director Jackie Crnkovich spoke to the challenges of fundraising during a pandemic.

“We’re in a bit of a Catch-22,” she said. “The demand for our services has never been greater. For example, rental help is up 256% over last year. At the same time, the virus makes it impossible to host any big fundraisers. We’ve had to get a little creative. The good news is, the Elmhurst community has responded remarkably throughout this difficult time, so thus far, we’ve been able to keep up with the community needs.”

With Congress still at an impasse since the letter’s original drafting, the original signatories are now working with the Small Business Recovery Initiative and other small business organizations to collect another round of signatories from small business owners and chamber of commerce leaders by the deadline of Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. (EST) and resend to Congressional leaders.

“My ask of you is to read the letter and join as a signatory,” stated Schultz in his Aug. 26 e-mail to ECCI. “The joint voices of those who represent businesses across our country will send a powerful message in support of the economic recovery we need.”

Many of our country’s small businesses are in peril because of COVID-19, with the number of active business owners in the U.S. plummeting by 3.3 million, or 22 percent, from February to April. Today, only 16 percent of small businesses are very confident they will be able to maintain payroll if no further government relief is provided.

“For those of us who believe in the power of capitalism to help all Americans, this is a vital moment to stand up for that belief by showing support for the small businesses that form the fabric of every community in our nation,” Schultz said.

ICGS begins classes with in-person learning

Survey on suicidal thoughts in teens causes alarm

On Monday, Aug. 24, students in grades 5-8 at Immaculate Conception Grade School opened the 2020-21 school year with in-person learning. Each subsequent day, additional grades joined the middle school students to begin their school year.

Since the end of the 2019-20 school year in May, ICGS’ administrators worked with their fulltime school nurse, Mrs. Trish Miller, to formulate three reopening plan options -- an in-person option, a hybrid option, and a remote option. Ultimately, in collaboration with their Joliet Diocesan Catholic Schools Office, the decision was made to move ahead with in-person learning.

In order to accommodate CDC mandates on social distancing, class sizes were reduced (so that desks can be safely spaced apart) and additional teachers were hired at nearly every grade level. Students are required to wear masks and do not rotate through classrooms as they did before the pandemic began. Instead teachers move from classroom to classroom for different subjects.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released the results of the 2019 Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System (YRBSS). The YRBSS is a survey, conducted by the CDC, that includes national, state, and local school-based representative samples of 9th through 12th grade students.

The purpose is to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth in the United States. The surveys are conducted every two years to determine the prevalence of these health risk behaviors. Behaviors that contribute to unhealthy lifestyles and those that indicate possible depression and/or suicidal ideation are included.

Currently, suicide is the third leading cause of death for high schoolaged youth in Illinois. The four questions below are included in the YRBSS and relate to suicidal thinking. The results from Illinois high school students are also included: 1. Have you experienced the feeling of hopelessness and sadness for a constant period of two weeks or greater during the past 12 months (possible beginning of clinical depression)?

36.3% answered YES or more than 1 out of every 3 young people 2. Have you seriously considered suicide in the past 12 months?

19.0% answered YES or almost 1 out of every 5 young people 3. Have you made a plan to attempt suicide in the past 12 months?

15.6% answered YES or almost 1 out of every 6 young people 4. Have you attempted suicide in the past 12 months?

9.0% answered YES or almost 1 out of every 11 young people The release of these results comes just before the beginning of September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month. National Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 6 – 12, with World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept. 10. During this day, week, and month, organizations and individuals across the state will be conducting activities to draw attention to the terrible tragedy of youth suicide.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

How to keep kids safe this fall during COVID-19 School districts across the country are figuring out how to navigate educating students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some started with remote learning while others brought students back on a full or part-time basis.

As parents prepare their children for fall, Dr. Victoria Uribe, who chairs the pediatric department at Elmhurst Clinic, offers a few tips on preparing kids for life during a pandemic.

• Have the talk. Talk to children about the coming school year and what it may look like for them. Ask questions about how they’re feeling, expectations, what they may need to succeed this school year and ways they can stay connected

with their friends. Dr. Uribe suggests using mealtimes to continue those discussions throughout the school year.

• Educate on use of masks. A child’s face mask should be comfortable enough to wear for the length of time they will be in school. For younger children, consider a mask that ties or connects behind the head rather than one that loops over the ears, suggests Dr. Uribe. Kids should have at least two masks, so they always have a clean mask to wear.

• Establish a sleep routine. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on sleep schedules. “Kids have been sleeping really weird hours since this all started,” says Dr. Uribe.

To get kids back on a regular sleep schedule, try slowly re-adjusting by putting children to bed earlier each night and waking them up earlier each day. The National Sleep Foundation recommends children get 8 to 13 hours of sleep, depending on their age.

• Get a check-up. Even if children are starting the school year with remote learning, be sure kids are up to date on all their school physicals before school starts, says Dr. Uribe. Don’t put off school physicals until later in the year when doctors’ offices may be dealing with flu or COVID-19 outbreaks.

• Don’t forget the flu shot. The American Academy of Pediatrics

recommends flu shots for children ages 6 months and older. Uribe notes that the flu shot will be of particular importance this year with the COVID-19 pandemic. “If we can prevent more flu that will help,” says Dr. Uribe. Flu shots typically become available mid- to late-September.

• Find a designated space for schoolwork. If children are learning remotely, be sure kids have a quiet, comfortable space to do their schoolwork at home. If possible, set up a desk with their supplies so they have a regular spot to do their work. Let them pick out a few desk supplies to help personalize their space.

• Get into a routine. Remote

learning kids should still get dressed and have breakfast before starting off their school day at home. Work in some outdoor break time so they don’t spend the entire day indoors. When possible, find a way for kids to safely socialize with their friends — whether it’s a study group outside or picnic lunch in the backyard.

• Plan. College students should be stocked with essential supplies — masks, over-the-counter pain and cold medications and a thermometer. Talk to them about ways to stay healthy and safe during the pandemic and stay in regular contact throughout the year.

York’s Bartolone ties school record with 4-under-par 31 at Maple Meadows Dukes card 1-over 141 team score in win against Downers Grove South

“I had a great day,” Bartolone told The Independent. “It was a good way to start the season.

I didn’t make many mistakes. I had a couple wedge shots that got me close and I made two 30-foot putts.”

Bartolone finished the impressive round with four birdies and five pars. The two 30-foot putts were for birdies.

He also had a two-putt birdie on a par-5.

“Pretty much everything went perfect,” he said. “If I make two six-footers for birdie on the first and third holes, I shoot 29, but I can’t complain about a 31.”

Bartolone was active on the IJGA summer tournament circuit.

“I practiced a lot over the summer,” he said. “I guess I kind of got lucky with the 31 and those putts I made, but I played well and played like I know I could.”

York’s 141 team score equated to a 1-over at Maple Meadows.

“We were solid all day,” York coach Jim Borel said.

In addition to Bartolone’s blistering-low 31, senior Joe Bonelli shot 1-over 36, while senior Zach Sutter and junior Jake Wool both went 2-over 37 to finish out the York scorecard.

Borel was thrilled with the depth the team displayed in the season-opener. “We started eight players in the varsity meet and the highest score was 41, which shows the depth of this talented team,” he said.

“I was proud of all our guys who played great with heat indexes approaching 100 degrees.”

Jack Leonard shot 39 for York in the 17-stroke win, while Sam Wit had a 40 and Spano Civella and Dylan Stockwell each shot 41s.

Bartolone is looking forward to what the season holds. “We lost two good seniors from last year, but we still look solid out there,” he said. “We just have to keep shooting low.”

Dukes prevail over elite competition

York High School’s boys golf team squared off against three standout teams during Saturday’s four-team meet at Maple Meadows Golf Club in Wood Dale. The Dukes faced Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township and Glenbard West in the competition, which featured six players from each team. York won the event with its team score of 294. Hinsdale Central placed second with its team total of 299. Lyons Township and Glenbard West both posted a team score of 300 to tie for third place. York senior Sam Bartolone (above) earned a tie for first in the individual standings of the 18-hole event. He fired a 2-over-par round of 72.

Senior Joe Bonelli shot a 73 to post his team’s second-best individual score of the day.

Junior Sam Wit contributed to York’s team score with a 4-over-par score of 74.

Senior Connor Polomsky rounded out the Dukes’ team total (72+73+74+75) by shooting a 75.

IHSA rules fall postseason to consist of one regional round only Timothy Christian girls tennis team wins; ICCP’s Atendido shoots 1-over 73 at Cog Hill

The Illinois High School Association Board of Directors recently approved a plan to conduct modified postseason state series tournaments in boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, girls swimming and diving and girls tennis this fall.

The approved plan allows for a single round of regional geographic competition to be conducted the week of Oct. 19-25, with the majority of the events expected to be held Saturday, Oct. 24.

“The health and safety of the student-athletes, their coaches and their school communities has been our priority from the start of the pandemic,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a statement. “Throughout the spring and summer, we looked for ways to re-engage student-athletes with their peers and coaches, and our membership has shared countless positive experiences from that ini-

tial ‘return to play’ period. We have found similar value in being able to conduct fall sports, and believe participants deserve a culminating experience if we can offer it safely.”

The IHSA state series tournaments, the association noted, will meet all Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines as it relates to COVID-19. The IHSA said it will be finalizing and releasing details for each fall state series tournament in the coming weeks, including dates, schedules, awards, structure and additional safety precautions.

In conjunction with this modification, the board also approved a $100 state series entry fee for any school entering a team or individual in any of the fall sports regional events. “The IHSA office is charged with the responsibility of being a good steward of the association’s finances,” Anderson said.

“The past few months have seen a significant reduction in the IHSA’s

income, given the cancelation of the IHSA boys basketball state finals and the entire spring season.

Financial challenges remain on the horizon in 2020-2021 due to the limited number of sports currently classified as ‘low risk’ by the state, making the chances of conducting full state series tournaments unlikely at this time.”

The IHSA said the board will continue to look at the postseason options by sport and season as the school year progresses so it can accurately gauge the allowable IDPH guidelines and most current COVID-19 data.

Timothy Christian girls tennis The Timothy Christian girls tennis team was a 5-0 winner over IC Catholic Prep in recent dual-meet action.

Alexa Yelenosky was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles for Timothy, while Kiana Morrissey was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 2 singles.

Cassandra Lee and Georgia Wells won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Sarah Carstensen and Maddie Drye were 6-0, 6-1 winners at No. 2 doubles, while Bella Tornabene and Kate Carpenter were 6-3, 6-0 winners at No. 3 doubles.

IC Catholic Prep boys golf The IC Catholic Prep boys golf team lost an 18-hole match to Chicago Brother Rice 320-335 at Cog Hill in Lemont and also dropped a nine-hole contest, 155-164, to St. Francis at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale.

“We opened against two strong programs, both with all their starters back from teams that went downstate last year,” Knights coach Don Sujack said. “It presented an early opportunity to measure ourselves against some high-quality competition. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to keep up, even after starting well enough in each match.”

was the meet at Cog Hill, posting a 1-over-par 73. Luke Tardiff and Nick Zanoni each shot 87, while PJ Wisniewski shot 88.

At Maple Meadows, Atendido was the team medalist with a 1-over 36. Tardiff shot 41, while Kenny Jones had a 42. Zanoni, Hilgart and Wisniewski each shot 44s.

“We knew we would have our hands full with both teams, but with the exception of Jann, we could have played much better,” Sujack said. “Jann has come back like a man on a mission. He has improved in every aspect of his game and he brings it every time he tees it up. For the rest of our team, it’s a question of dealing with the expectations and then performing to our capabilities.”

The Knights had matches scheduled earlier this week against Chicago Christian and Riverside-Brookfield. “The opportunity to quickly compete again and show what we can do has the boys motivated,” Sujack said.

Sophomore Jack Bone led the Trojans with a career-low 39. “That was encouraging to see,” the coach said. “Against Aurora Central he said he was calm and comfortable on the course. He wasn’t getting upset with the bad shots he hit. He knew he would hit a few bad shots here and there. It’s all about minimizing your shots. He did a good job of staying calm and controlled.

The Trojans made another stop at Phillips Park and downed Aurora Christian by a 185-191 count.

“Phillips is a fun course to play,” Vander Naald said. “The kids enjoy playing there. There is a youth golf deal where you can go out and play some courses around the Chicagoland area. It’s a 15-dollar membership fee and there are a handful of

courses throughout the area you can play for five dollars. Phillips is one of them. Some of our players have been able to utilize that.”

Timothy also has been bolstered by the likes of team captains Kyle Mahler (senior) and Ben Vanderwal (junior). “We also have a mix of three or four other players that still have potential, but their scores are fluctuating so far this year,” Vander Naald pointed out.

“These guys have a great work ethic,” Vander Naald added. “They aren’t taking anything for granted. We don’t know what the season holds this year. We take every match and every practice like it’s our last and we put forth our best effort every day.”

Vander Naald said his players have adjusted to the new COVID-19-related rules regarding wearing masks while on the course (except for when executing a shot) and bunker play. However, the IHSA late last week confirmed to The Independent that masks no longer have to be worn at all times on the course, only when social distancing is not possible — this after presenting its position on the rule to the Illinois Department of Public Health. “Golfers may compete without face coverings so long as social distancing is maintained,” the IHSA’s Matt Troha said. “We informed IDPH that our interpretation was that golfers did not have to wear face coverings when socially

distanced and they agreed.”

“The masks rule has been a good challenge,” Vander Naald said.

“For this year, the options are wear a mask and play golf or don’t play golf. For all these kids it has been a group effort and they all are doing a great job. The bunker rule has been a help, for sure, in not having to play any bad-lied shots in the bunker. I told them not to get used to it.

It’s not a rule that will last forever.”

Timothy is playing almost exclusively Metro Suburban Conference teams this fall (It does have a match against Lisle on the books).

“We have a couple home-and-away matches, but not with every school.

A lot of high schools are having a hard time finding tee times. Everything right now is very fluid. We are taking it one week at a time.”

Vander Naald said all systems remain a go for a MSC tournament at Kankakee Elks later in the season.

“That’s what we are being told,” he said. “All systems look like a go for a conference tournament. The kids right now are thrilled and are out there having a good time. They are enjoying it, and are thankful and blessed that we are able to get out there and play while a lot of other sports teams are at a standstill right now.”

Timothy was scheduled to have that rematch with Chicago Christian earlier this week and will host Bishop McNamara at Oak Brook today.

York girls shine at three-team golf meet On Saturday, Aug. 29, York’s girls golf team faced Willowbrook and Glenbard West in a three-team meet at Sugar Creek Golf Course in Villa Park. York won the team competition with its score of 165. Glenbard West posted a team score of 186, while Willowbrook finished with a 189.

York senior Nora Foley won medalist honors by shooting the lowest individual score of the event. She fired a 9-hole score of 39 on the par32 course. Foley’s round included an

eagle on the par-4 eighth hole. She holed her second shot from about 75 yards.

Senior Elle Borchardt and junior Audrey Matias both posted nine-hole scores of 41 for the Dukes. Like Foley, Matias made an eagle on the par4 eighth hole. Matias hit her tee shot onto the green and sank a lengthy eagle putt.

Senior Julia Filosa rounded out York’s team score of 165 (39+41+41+44) with a 44.

Health Department provides framework to return to school

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is releasing a “Return to School Framework” with the DuPage Regional Office of Education (DuPage ROE). As COVID-19 cases continue to rise locally, the “Return to School Framework” recommends that school officials review and consider the level of disease activity in their communities as they make decisions about if and when to shift between learning models this school year.

DCHD has been working closely with the DuPage ROE and school district administrators in DuPage County to help inform plans for safely reopening schools this fall.

The health and safety measures recommended for schools by IDPH and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) are important tools to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission in a school setting. The success of these measures, however, is also dependent on the level of COVID-19 activity in the communities where our students, teachers, staff, and families live, learn, work,

pray, and play.

In addition to county-level metrics and COVID-19 surveillance data, school-level considerations are important as well, such as case and outbreak activity, specific trends and distribution of cases, absenteeism among students and staff within a school, and alternate remote learning site options and safety protocols.

In every learning model, school districts are also advised to follow the health and safety protocols set forth

ECCI to celebrate Chamber of Commerce Week with various events In celebration of Chamber of Commerce Week in Illinois, the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI) will sponsor a month of networking and fundraising events, offer recruitment incentives for new and reactivating members, and conduct a special sale on Elmhurst-Opoly board games.

At the request of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has proclaimed September 14-18 as Chamber of Commerce Week in Illinois.

Mayoral Proclamation Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley has issued a Mayoral Proclamation declaring Sept. 14-18 as Chamber of Commerce Week in Elmhurst.

Established in 1918, the Elmhurst Chamber is a voluntary organization of business and professional men and women who have joined together for the purpose of “promoting an envi-

ronment that creates success for local businesses and our community.”

The Chamber also serves the needs of its members through services, programs and events that provide opportunities for networking and referral, business education, development and promotion, governmental representation and community involvement.

“With more than 500 members, the Elmhurst Chamber is the largest organization representing the interests of our businesses, and promoting commerce and industry throughout our community,” said John Quigley, ECCI President and CEO. Elmhurst-Opoly special sale During September, our Chamber is selling Elmhurst-Opoly board games at a buy four and get a fifth game FREE special. The cost of $25 per games includes retail sales tax. Delivery outside of Elmhurst is an extra expense, dependent on the shipping cost.

Less than 400 of the 1,000 games manufactured as part of our Chamber’s Centennial Celebration in 2018 are available for purchase.

Games can be purchased online via a link on the home page of the ECCI website (elmhurstchamber.org) or at the office located at 300A West Lake Street, Suite 201.

New Member campaign The Chamber’s new member recruitment campaign runs through September with the $25 registration fee waived for all new members.

Annual membership is available at three tiers, starting at $480 per year, or only $40 per month for new members paying their Chamber dues via direct debit or credit card.

Not quite enraged, but somewhere between mad and that. I’m mad-enraged for robbing my wonderful and loving dad of the last weeks or months that he was cognizant enough to know he was sitting in a room that wasn’t his home, alone. It wasn’t fair. CORONA isn’t fair. Life isn’t fair. I understand this, but’s hard not

to be sad about those facts sometimes.

My grandson entered the world seeing people’s faces covered by masks. It’s not ideal and I hate it, but he has 10 fingers and 10 toes. He is beautiful. He doesn’t see our faces but he feels our love and he hears our words of endearment in his perfect little ears. When I held him for the

first time his tiny hand gripped my finger. He fell asleep in my arms and grinned in his sleep.

that has changed. Instead of us being there to welcome him, he is bravely forging ahead on his own.

It’s what an 18-year-old is supposed to do. But still, I am his mom. I can’t put that behind me – now or ever. His university has an all-you-can-eat food plan and free laundry. At least those are two things I don’t have to

worry about.

My dad. That’s an entire column, but I believe I’ve already written a few about this hero in my life. It’s a shame – a true shame – that he lived his last months without family or friends surrounding him with the love he so deserved. I’m mad at CORONA for that. I’m more than mad.

It was probably gas, but in this year of 2020, I’ll take what I can get.
