Eugene Dorsey, Eugene Dorsey 31, of Chicago, stole items from the homes of residents of an Elmhurst senior living facility he worked for in 2015.

Elmhurst Police first began their investigation in November 2015, after items including jewelry, were reported missing from a resident’s home in the independent living side of Park Place senior living facility, according to a release. (The facility is divided into an independent living side and an assisted living side.)

According to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the investigation revealed that on several occasions between Nov. 4 and Nov. 25, 2015, Dorsey, a nurse’s assistant, entered at least 11 residents’ homes, all located on the independent living side of the facility, and stole items from the residents including rings, bracelets and necklaces.

Dorsey then pawned the stolen items. Dorsey worked strictly on the assisted living side of the facility and should not have been present on the independent living side at all.

If there’s one person who might look forward to a new performing arts center in Elmhurst, it would be Doug Beach, Chair of the Jazz Music Department at Elmhurst College, leader of the Jazz Band, and founder of the annual Elmhurst College Jazz

Fest that comes to the campus every year in late February.

The Independent caught up with Beach last week to seek his opinion and thoughts on the planned Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA). Beach is bringing the Elmhurst College Jazz Band to perform at the ECPA Spotlight Gala sched-

uled for Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Elmhurst Art Museum, beginning at 7 p.m. The evening will include music, song and dance, along with a gourmet buffet and live auction.

“Well, it’s completely out of my hands,” Beach told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “But any other venue for entertainment in the

City can only be a good thing.”

Asked about some of the features planned at the ECPA, Beach found it interesting that there would be classrooms to give lessons and ways to work in small groups.

Having grown up in Broadview, Beach attended Proviso East High School and then did his undergradu-

ate work at Milliken University.

“Right after that, I went on the road,” he said “If I had a chance to perform, that’s what I did. I was able to begin teaching after college, too.”

Local resident donates ‘crazy quilt’ to Art Institute Jane Foulser’s art piece made of fine fabrics, embroidery, embellishments

Long-time Elmhurst resident Jane Foulser recently made a generous donation to The Art Institute of Chicago. Not a monetary donation, as certainly numerous locals have made, but a quilt which will become part of The Art Institute’s permanent textile collection. Far from a traditional quilt, which typically has uniform squares and repetitive patterns, Foulser donated a rare quilt known as a “crazy quilt.”

Foulser has always been interested in quilts which stems from her background as a seamstress - just one of her many talents. Growing up in the small rural town of Sharonville, Ohio, 13 miles from Cincinnati, she began sewing all her own clothes at the age of 12.

How she got started Approximately 15 years ago, Jane purchased her crazy quilt at an estate sale in Elmhurst. She stated that she was drawn to the quilt because of the extraordinary embroidery work on each piece of fabric and its vibrant colors.

“Each piece is edged with a different embroidery stitch and has a unique, fanciful embellishment depicted on it,” she said. “For instance, there is a gnome, a grouping of playing cards, a Victorian boot, a crane, a butterfly, a variety of flowers -- and as you examine the quilt you will continue to find

Glowiak announces candidacy for State Senator in District 24 On Monday, Sept. 23, Suzy Glowiak announced her candidacy for Illinois State Senate in the 24th District. Glowiak is a fiscally conservative Democrat inspired to bring responsible decisionmaking back to state government.

“The people in District 24 are tired of watching important directives stalled by political division,” she said. “Education and economic reform should not take a backseat to petty partisanship.”

Suzy Glowiak Glowiak has had a career as a mechanical engineer. She also served many years as an expert witness in the courtroom. Her background in community service points to an individual who has passion and determination to bring to Illinois’ 24th District.

Glowiak served as a Trustee for the Western Springs Village Board for eight years, as Chair of the Public Works and Water committee through the construction of a new water purification plant.

In 2014, Glowiak was the Democratic candidate for the Illinois Senate in District 24; at that time, she learned about the issues affecting families.

Glowiak has lived in Western Springs with her family for 25 years.

She has been an active volunteer in her local schools, in her church and in many other organizations and activities serving her community.

“With my roots based at the local level, I believe I can bring new energy and ideas to a political climate mired in selfishness and resentment,” she said.

Cafe Amano closes its doors

At press time, few details were available about the fact that the downtown restaurant Cafe Amano suddenly closed its doors. The word that the eating establishment located at 116 E. Schiller had closed up began to circulate around town on Tuesday, Sept. 19. No other information was provided over the remainder of the week.

The restaurant’s web site simply says “Thanks for 13 great years,” and that another “new and exciting concept” would fill the space soon.

Marco Conte, the long-time Chef at Cafe Amano, left the restaurant in early July and has started his own venture called Marco’s Table. At that time, owners Christopher and Karen DePodesta announced they were bringing on a new Executive Chef named Christopher Mason.

In last week’s Elmhurst Independent, the 9/21/17 issue, a story appeared that summarized Superintendent Dr. David Moyer’s State of the District 205 Schools address. The story included the following quote from Dr. Moyer: “Excellent teaching and leadership at all levels of the organization, combined with a supportive and engaged community and professional expertise and data are necessary for the principals* to be fully realized.”

Explaining the crazy quilt “After I finished a garment, I would always save my scraps with the thought that I could use them to make quilts - and I did,” she said. “I made several traditional square patterned quilts, but always had great interest in making a crazy quilt. A crazy quilt has an asymmetrical pattern, and there is really no order to it at all. Each piece incorporated into the quilt is a random shape, size, fabric, and color.”

Foulser said that crazy quilts are made from fine fabrics such as silk, velvet, tulle, and satin. The fabrics are sewn together with fanciful embroidery stitches and are intricately embellished with a wide variety of embroidery motifs, and all types of lace, ribbons, and beading.

“I was always intrigued with the extreme creativity that was allowed in creating a crazy quilt, but also realized it was very labor intensive.

I never got around to making one.”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

York at around 7:29 p.m.

• Joshua Murray, 19, of Bartlett, was issued citations for possession of alcohol by a minor and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near West and First at around 5:46 p.m.

Police said Murray was found to have several unopened bottles of alcoholic liquor in his vehicle.

Sept. 15 Deborah A. Foley, 37, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at around 1:05 a.m.

Battery

Sept. 19 A victim near York and Industrial told police at around 11:56 a.m. that a gold sedan was following him eastbound on Industrial Drive. The victim used his cell phone to photograph the gold sedan. The suspect exited the passenger side of the sedan, approached the victim, and attempted to steal his cell phone, and then struck the victim in the mouth. The victim fled the scene in his car. An investigation is pending.

Sept. 16 • Dmitry Borisionok, 39, of Schiller Park, was cited for battery in the 300 block of W. Lake St. at around 6:53 p.m. A victim told police that the suspect allegedly touched her back in an insulting manner. Officers reviewed video surveillance of the incident which showed the suspect touched the victim, an employee, according to police.

• A victim in the 200 block of Fremont told police at around 9:16 a.m. that while out with the suspect the previous night, she suspected he later removed her boyfriend’s wallet from her car. When she questioned the suspect the next morning, he and his mother went to her house. The victim states that the suspect got out of the car and battered her. The suspect exited the car, threw the wallet and punched her. Both the suspect and his mother then drove away. An investigation is pending.

Criminal damage or defacement to property/criminal damage to a vehicle

Sept. 20 Police said a reporting officer responded to Mount Emblem Cemetery in the 500 block of E. Grand Ave. at around 9:15 a.m. and met with a DuPage County Probation Officer who related that Jeffrey Berry, 44, of Lombard, had cut off his GPS monitoring unit from his ankle and left it here. Berry was located in Lombard and charged with criminal damage to government-supported property.

Sept. 16 A complainant/store clerk at a food store in the 500 block of S. Spring told police at around 1:27 a.m. that an unknown suspect had damaged the store’s glass door. When the complainant confronted the suspect, the suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction. The suspect was described as a white male, between 25 and 35 years old, wearing a short-sleeved dark gray polo shirt, dark pants and dark shoes with white laces and soles. Estimated amount to replace the door is $5,000.

Disorderly conduct

Sept. 18 Alfredo A. Carreon, 45, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct in the 100 block of E. First St. at around 8:02 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a custody exchange at the police department, Carreon followed the victim out the door and stated, “I’m gonna kill you.”

Sept. 14 A victim in the 400 block of Argyle told police at around 8:42 a.m. that a suspect had exposed himself in a building stairwell, but the suspect denied the accusations in an interview by police. Further investigation is pending.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

Sept. 17 Police said officers responded to the report of domestic battery in the 200 block of Addison at around 7:58 p.m. According to police, officers could hear arguing at the door and both a male and female answered when officers knocked. They admitted they were in disagreement about a few different issues. Police said she slapped his face, he grabbed her wrists; however, there were no visible signs of injury to either individual.

Both agreed to stay separated for the night.

Sept. 15 A complainant in the 100 block of Belden told police at around 8:12 a.m. that a suspect was high on drugs, armed with a knife and locked her out of the residence. Upon arrival, officers did not locate a knife and paramedics found no evidence of drug use. Both parties were involved in a verbal argument over the suspect’s payroll check. The suspect told police she will leave the residence until the situation calms down.

Sept. 17 Sade Brown, 27, of Bellwood, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, making an improper turn and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a report of a wrong way driver on Route 83 at around 4:02 a.m. Police said officers located Brown after she ran off the roadway near St. Charles and Arlington.

Sept. 16 • Kishon Bradley, 20, of Champaign, was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor, possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and

May 1-Sept. 19 A victim in the 300 block of W. First St. told police at around 12:39 p.m. that the suspect is a former coworker at the Elmhurst Park District. The victim has been receiving numerous unwanted correspondence from the suspect and wishes the communications to cease. An officer is attempting to contact the suspect.

Sept. 17 A victim in the 400 block of Mitchell told police at around 3:19 p.m. that a suspect has been harassing her through text messages, phone calls and Facebook. The suspect was advised that if he continued to contact the victim, he would be subject to arrest.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

Sept. 19 • Rebecca Collins, 29, and Byron Callary, 50, both of Chicago, were both charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, while Collins was additional charged with obstructing identification, in the 900 block of S. York at around 10:22 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle, Collins was found injecting drugs in her arm using a needle. According to police, officers located drug paraphernalia and additional drugs inside the vehicle.

• Police said that subsequent to a call for a disturbance at a restaurant in the 900 block of N. York at around 11:51 p.m., Victoria Milo, 29, of Houston, Tex., had become upset after not getting cookies and ice cream for her 4-year-old daughter and had begun knocking on the drive-through window.

According to police, Milo was found to be DUI-drugs and was in possession of suspected Alprazolam®, Oxycodone® and Hydrocodone®, while Tony Tan, 29, of Morton Grove, was found to be in possession of Alprazolam. Milo was charged with DUIdrugs, three counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, endangering the life of a child and a child restraint violation.

Tan was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Sept. 18 Saad Madda, 27, of Glendale Heights, and Syed Zaidi, 27, of Bloomingdale, were cited for possession of cannabis in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 9:09 p.m.

Sept. 17 • Anthos A. Baenen, 28, of Franklin Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 12:02 p.m.

• Ian Fourie, 21; Jeffery Dinquel, 21; Carrington Brekenridge, 20; and Olivia Senese, 18, all of Villa Park, were issued citations for possession of cannabis near Rex and the Prairie Path at around 12:02 a.m. Fourie also was charged with possession of drug para-

phernalia.

Sept. 16 Emmanuel Monarrez-Unzue, 22, of Northlake, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, disobeying a traffic control device, having no insurance and only one tail light subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Arthur at around 10:47 p.m.

Sept. 15 Armond Stephan Fox, 27, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in the parking lot of Butterfield Park at around 2:41 p.m.

Sept. 14 • Jonah Englert, 19, of Coal City, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Palmer at around 1:52 a.m.

• Sean Murphy, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia near North and Berteau at around 8:40 p.m. and released without charges pending lab results. Police said that subsequent to traffic stop, Murphy and another suspect were observed making movements towards the center console. A search by a K-9 revealed a one-hitter cannabis box and a crystalized substance which was submitted to the lab for testing, according to police.

• Justine Turk, 27, of Joliet, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance subsequent to a suspicious auto in the 500 block of S. York at around 12:22 a.m. Police said Turk was found to be in possession of cocaine, cannabis and a cannabis-smoking pipe.

• Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Grand at around 5:55 p.m., a suspect was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and two suspected Zolpidem® pills. The suspect was taken into custody and later released without charges pending lab results.

Suspicious circumstances

Sept. 16 Police said a suspect in the 600 block of W. North Ave. initially reported that he had been robbed while outside of a restaurant.

Officers noted that the suspect was highly intoxicated and later admitted he wasn’t actually robbed. The suspect refused any further assistance from officers and was transported to a family member’s house.

Sept. 20 Deanna M. Davis, 41, of Elmhurst, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:20 p.m. Police said Davis hid numerous items in her shopping cart under a large pillow, and left the store without paying for the items that totaled $198.84.

Sept. 19 Alexandro Huarcha, 21, of Bensenville, was charged with retail theft and possession of cannabis at a food store in the 600 block of N. York at around 8:18 p.m. Police said a reporting officer observed Huarcha entering the store and carrying an empty backpack.

Several moments later, the officer observed him exit the store with merchandise in the backpack, according to police. Contact was made with the suspect, whom police said

• A complainant in the 300 block of S. Poplar told police at around 10:25 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) used his personal information and opened two Chase credit card accounts. One of the accounts was opened six months ago, and the other was opened 1 ½ years ago.

Downers Grove man charged in crash that killed Lombard resident According to a release issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, Elmhurst police have reported the arrest of a driver involved in a fatal traffic crash that occurred at 2:15 p.m. on Aug. 10 on westbound Roosevelt Road, west of York Street in Elmhurst. On that date, Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments responded to the traffic crash scene and located two involved vehicles. One of the drivers, William Bartolucci, 69, of Lombard, was critically injured in the traffic crash, extricated from his vehicle and transported to Elmhurst Hospital.

The Elmhurst Police Department conducted an investigation of the traffic crash with the assistance of the DuPage County Accident Reconstruction Team and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Sept. 11-Sept. 12 A victim in the 300 block of Elm Avenue told police at around 11:06 a.m. that they noticed an unknown suspect(s) make two money transfers on his Fifth Third Bank account. The bank closed the victim’s account and refunded the money to the victim.

Sept. 9 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of Grace Avenue at around 2:18 p.m. A victim told police that an unauthorized purchase was made using her American Express credit card. The purchase was from Macy’s and mailed to the name and address of the suspect. American Express is going to refund the purchase and has cancelled the credit card.

Sept. 7 Deceptive practice was reported at a car dealership in the 400 block of Lake Street at around 2:39 p.m.

The car dealership reported that it took an order over the phone for four Toyota OEM tires totaling $797.04. On that same day at around 12:27 p.m., two suspects entered the dealership and paid for the tires with a check, obtained the tires and left the business. On Sept.

12, the check was returned for “no such account.” The suspects reportedly drove a 2012-2014 dark gray Toyota Sienna minivan with unknown registration. One suspect was described as being possibly either an Hispanic or Indian male in his mid-30s, tall with a bald/shaved head, wearing a blue long sleeve jacket, blue jeans and dark shoes.

The second suspect was described as being possibly either an Hispanic or Indian male in his mid-30s, heavy set, with a belly and short, dark, with a shaved head, a dark moustache, wearing a dark blue jacket, a white T-shirt, gray sweatpants and white gym shoes.

Aug. 11 A victim in the 400 block of S. York told police at around 12:58 p.m. she placed a platinum diamond banded ring and a platinum diamond solitaire ring in a black velvet ring box, and then put the box in the kitchen “junk drawer.”

On Aug. 28, the victim found the ring box and the rings were missing. The victim told police she has been having issues with her ex-husband and suspected he had something to do with it. The victim does not wish to pursue charges.

May 12 A victim in the 700 block of N. Geneva told police at around 8:50 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) opened an unauthorized U.S. Bank credit card using her personal information. The victim has completed the necessary paperwork through U.S. Bank; however, the victim keeps receiving notices requesting payment.

The investigation revealed the other driver was operating his vehicle at a high rate of speed when he collided with Mr. Bartolucci’s vehicle, causing Bartolucci’s vehicle to leave the roadway and roll over. Mr. Bartolucci later succumbed to injuries resulting from the crash on Sept. 9, 2017, at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood.

Viewpoint Slices of life The other day I found myself in a quandary. I was in need of cupcakes, but the pantry was without a box of cake mix. I didn’t want to go to the store so was left with but one option: to bake from scratch.

I’m not a baker. Mostly because I lack a penchant for measuring and exact oven temperatures. But when your kid needs cupcakes, you deliver cupcakes – in this case, from scratch.

I didn’t think much of it.

Until a few days later when I related the experience to a few friends. They all had the same reaction: disbelief and shock. “I’d never bake from scratch,” they said. “Too risky.”

I got the same response from my family a week later when we ran out of pancake mix. They assumed being out of pancake mix meant we couldn’t make pancakes. Ha! There’s a Google

I stirred together some flour, eggs and assorted baking sodas and powders and flipped out a batch of from scratch flapjacks.

My family was impressed with my culinary magic. Who’d have ever thought you could make pancakes without a mix?

The kitchen – and food – can be mysterious and complex.

Daunting even. And we are busy.

Let’s not forget that. Convenience foods and mixes make our complex and hectic lives easier.

I’m all about making life convenient and my freezer always contains some sort of premade waffles and pizza.

But in a pinch, I’ve found that going back to the basics isn’t really that hard and we shouldn’t forget that making things the oldfashioned way is doable. Many things in life seem mysterious and complex, until you understand them. Then they become simply a few ingredients waiting for you to mix together in a bowl.

You don’t have to stop with pancakes. There are other typically pre-made food items you can create at home from scratch without scratching your head in frustration because they are really, truly easy to do.

Whipped cream made at home is so much better than the stuff in the plastic bowl or metal pressurized thingy. The ingredient list is short. Cream. Powdered

sugar. And air, which you whip in with a hand or electric beater.

It takes just a few minutes. Any longer and you’ll have butter.

(Which you can also make at home.) If you want a magnificent versus a great outcome you can add a dash of vanilla (to the whipped cream, not the butter).

Why buy the cool or ready stuff when you can have real?

If you’re feeling the love, you might want to try making yogurt.

It’s made with milk and a small amount of yogurt containing active cultures. Temperature and time are key, so if you’re interested you’ll want to get the details through the Google.

Cheesecake is cream cheese (or the lower fat stuff), eggs and sugar. For every block of cheese (usually about four for an entire cheesecake), use one egg and a quarter cup sugar.

You can add vanilla if you are

feeling generous. After that, get inventive and add other flavors and ingredients – chocolate, berries, etc. Use whatever you like for the crust. Graham crackers are popular, but almost any cookie will do.

That’s about all I have room for, but I could go on about mozzarella cheese, ice cream, corn dogs, chicken soup and so on.

Cooking from scratch: it’s like having a magic science lab – right in your own kitchen. And the best part is you get to eat the results.

The golden age of television is having resurgence with many ways to watch

According to Wikipedia (the great container of internet information), the “golden age of television” was the decade of live television from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. I have no idea if that is true (and opinions and labels are all relative anyway), but I think a new golden age of television is upon us.

When I was a kid, we had three or four channels (and no remote). Then all the cable channels were born and TV, for me, became a vast wasteland of not much of substance to watch.

There was much to choose from but nothing that really interested me.

(And when I was a kid, I was devoted to The Brady Bunch so perhaps I am not qualified to be such a TV snob now.)

My hubby and I gave up TV a few years ago and didn’t miss it.

Movies were enough and DVDs/ downloads of certain shows sufficed.

But in recent years, the advent of Netflix shows and Amazon and Hulu originals (plus good old broadcast channel shows) have my interest

Letter to the editor Reader praises local restaurant As a forever, Elmhurst resident, I would like to give a fresh, glowing compliment, to Francesca Amici’s restaurant, in Elmhurst.

Most of us are familiar with it, because it’s been around awhile and most of us have dined there, at one time or another. Every time I go there, the service and food are great. Starting with Tom, the manager, this place is home. They care about your dining experience. “Experience” is the key word here. They care about the food. They care if it’s prepared the way you like it and they make it right, if you don’t. They are professional, personable and friendly.

Whenever I leave here, I’m not just physically satisfied but fed and nourished, in all ways.

If you haven’t been to Francesca Amici’s in awhile, stop in. Stay awhile and enjoy the dining experience.

piqued. I am a TV lover again.

I am not alone. Did you catch the recent Emmys? A lot of “big name movie stars” were up for Emmys; people who we are used to seeing walk the red carpet for their movie premieres and at the Oscars.

Nominated for a television Emmy this year included Robert De Niro, Anthony Hopkins, Stanley Tucci, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Ewan MacGregor, Kevin Spacey, Viola Davis, Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon, Geoffrey Rush, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laura Dern, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin.

Viola, Robert, Jane, Anthony, Nicole, Jessica, Geoffrey, Susan, Kevin, and Reese have all won Oscars for their movie roles. Others in the list may have had nominations as well. Whatever used to be the bar

for star power has flip-flopped. TV is cool again.

The “big league” used to be feature films. One would get their start on television, even daytime television (yay for soap operas!), and then try to break into the movies. Someone really “made it” if they got a movie role.

Success is a fickle thing perhaps but seeing the creativity and storytelling (and downright entertainment) that exists on television today is invigorating.

Watching the Emmys clued me in to shows that I want to check out.

That is the beauty of TV these days too. We have 24/7 access, and we don’t have to watch commercials. (And because I rarely see commercials, I am mesmerized by them.)

With all the new ways to watch television, I have no idea how they

do ratings or views. All I know is that there is stuff to watch again. There are shows on network TV that interest me, and all the new outlets as well.

I read an article that the actors, producers, writers, etc. are excited about this age of television. It’s not about creating a show that will lead in to the nightly news. It’s about creativity. Joe Lewis, head of original programming at Amazon Studios said, “Our job is to make the greatest TV shows on the planet.”

Excellent. Bring it on. Entertain me, educate me, inform me; make me laugh, make me think. And thank you for making me want to watch television again. Maybe even an old rerun of The Brady Bunch.

“I’m having my third hip operation. Bet you didn’t even know I had three hips!” Dan Gibbons quipped to a group of volunteers at a meeting about his new venture Cafe Liberty.

Alas it was true, that meeting was held just before EWAN’s ‘Cue for the Cause over Labor Day weekend.

Because of the surgery, Gibbons was unable to attend the ‘Cue, so he couldn’t defend his title — First Place for Best Sauce — which he won last year.

Hard as we try, we can’t do it all, but Gibbons is giving it his best, launching this new venture just as registration begins for the annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. The vision How nice it is when we visualize some venture and then it actually comes to be. That was the case with Cafe Liberty.

“I wish we had a facility here in DuPage County that could be used to train people in culinary skills,” Gibbons told the Independent a few months ago. “I’d especially like to offer it to veterans, those who may not have a career or haven’t learned a skill. If they could learn through a program we offered, it could help veterans find a job, maybe even launch a career.”

Now Gibbons is indeed moving forward on the concept known as Cafe Liberty.

Project ahead of schedule In 2015, the Board of Directors of the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation (DGTT) developed a threeyear strategic plan to expand its community outreach by establishing a job training facility, with a goal to complete it by 2019.

“We are two years ahead of schedule and are excited to announce the opening of Cafe Liberty in the fall of 2017,” Gibbons said.

“Last fall, Doc Severinsen called us and asked us to join his tour,” Beach said. “That was nice, that he contacted us.”

The Elmhurst College Jazz Festival celebrated its 50th year in 2016 and Dick Johnson, an NBC news personality in Chicago, took part in hosting the event. In return, the band played for a benefit when Johnson asked.

“There are so many opportunities to study music here at the college,” Beach said. “We have two concert bands, an orchestra, 10 combos and two jazz bands, and that doesn’t include vocal music programs.”

The jazz band stays busy performing all the time, in fact, Beach said they were booked every weekend until sometime in November.

Elmhurst College sees highest enrollments in its history

Elmhurst College is celebrating its highest enrollments in the College’s 146-year history, both for new students as well as the overall population. The historic numbers coincide with several recent achievements at the College that benefit all of those students, from greater financial stability to national recognition for Elmhurst’s undergraduate teaching.

At 3,529, the record-setting number includes members of the first-year class, transfer students, new traditional part-time students, new graduate students and new students enrolled in the Elmhurst Learning and Success Academy, along with returning students. Fittingly, this population includes the Class of 2021, a historic group in its own right because its members will graduate during the

College’s sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary year.

The high enrollments come during a new period of financial stability for the College, achieved through greater fiscal discipline and the resolution last spring of the state’s two-year budget impasse. Like nearly every other college and university across the state, Elmhurst had a number of students who were promised grant monies from the Monetary Assistance Program, or MAP. During Illinois’ budget difficulties, Elmhurst College used institutional funds to cover its MAP students. The restored state funding gives the College greater flexibility to pursue new projects.

“Our record enrollment success, combined with MAP funding, place Elmhurst in a very strong position

for the future,” said Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken, who instituted the fiscal initiatives last year, during his first year in office.

The fundraising front also experienced significant gains. Total gifts and commitments for 2016-2017 grew to $7.45 million, an increase of 250 percent over the previous year.

The figure includes an annual fund total of $920,833, an increase of 238 percent; and more than $1 million raised for student scholarships.

Students also are the beneficiaries of some recent accolades and academic successes for Elmhurst College. U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Elmhurst No. 3 in the Midwest for the strength of its undergraduate teaching, and No. 11 on the overall list of Best Regional Univer-

sities-Midwest. Elmhurst also rose to No. 9 as one of the best colleges in the Midwest for veterans, and U.S. News, Money and Forbes consistently rank Elmhurst as one of the Midwest’s best values in higher education.

Earlier this month, Elmhurst College’s graduate program in communication sciences and disorders earned its initial accreditation, achieving perfect compliance with national standards for its Master of Science program in the burgeoning field of speech-language pathology.

Over the summer, Elmhurst College signed agreements with three community colleges that will smooth the process for students interested in transferring to Elmhurst. This year’s new student population includes 372 transfer students, or 43 percent of

all new, full-time students. President VanAken and the presidents of College of DuPage, Triton College and Moraine Valley Community College signed agreements that guarantee admission to Elmhurst for qualifying students from the three community colleges. The agreements also create a dual enrollment program that enables students attending those institutions to take advantage of Elmhurst’s programs and resources at the same time.

“As we look forward to our sesquicentennial, we are at a pivotal time in our history,” President VanAken said. “We have a tremendous opportunity to take some bold, innovative steps that will provide an even more vibrant environment for our current and future students.”

Westmont Village Trustee Steven Nero announced his candidacy for the DuPage County Board in District 2 yesterday. Nero will run in the Republican primary to be held March 20 in 2018. Currently, Nero is a two-term trustee on the Westmont Village Board, first elected in 2011 and re-elected in 2015.

“The Foundation recently funded $23,000 in literacy resources,” said Brian Bresnahan, Foundation Chairperson, “and a large amount of the newest grant dollars support science and technology that helps teachers deliver STEM-related curriculum.”One example is the multiple grants awarded to help create Makerspaces at every elementary school library and two areas (the Library and Lincoln Lab) at York High School. A Makerspace is a collaborative workspace for making, learning, exploring and sharing. Spaces such as these support future-ready learning and allow teachers and students to embed creativity and innovation, critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration in learning experiences. Foundation funds are also being used to purchase Wi-Fi hot spot devices to provide high speed internet access outside of school for identified students that do not have it. The Title I funding that provided these devices in the past has been significantly reduced, and the Foundation is picking up the cost to ensure that students have the opportunity to fully engage in their education with this important resource.

Additionally, this year the Foundation is again providing funding that allows schools to conduct programs outside of the school day, which help identified students with academic assistance, as well as organizational and study skills.

Nybo files amendment to LeGere Law DMMC presents Elmhurst with to better protect medical professionals 2017 Best Innovation Award The City of Elmhurst took home the 2017 DMMC Award for Best Innovation Wednesday night at the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference’s 2017 Municipal Innovation Celebration.

Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley and Fire Chief Tom Freeman showcased the City’s new Advanced Life Support Rapid Response Vehicle, a single-staffed SUV, which enables first responders to reach accidents and attend to medical emergencies faster and more cost effectively than a traditional ambulance or fire truck.

To address the concerns of medical professionals hesitant to prescribe epinephrine to Elmhurst Police and police departments across the state as part of the new Annie LeGere Law, State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) has filed an amendment to the law to offer greater liability protection for participating health providers.

“The Annie LeGere Law was a huge community effort, and we are getting so close to seeing it come to fruition,” said Nybo. “I’ve spoken with law enforcement, medical professionals and local officials to file an amendment that I believe will make health providers feel more comfortable prescribing epinephrine to law enforcement and get EpiPens into the hands of police officers all across Illinois. Come Legislative Session in January, I hope our community advocates will join me again in passing this lifesaving legislation.”

The Annie LeGere Law (House Bill 4462), effective as of January 2017, allows for Illinois police officers to carry and administer epinephrine autoinjectors (EpiPens) on duty as an emergency measure to reverse life-threatening allergic reactions— following training and procedural requirements.

While the Elmhurst Police have added EpiPens and extensive device training to their budget

for implementation, they require a physician to sign off on the training course and prescribe the epinephrine—which has been an obstacle due to language in the law concerning medical professionals’ liability. Working with DuPage County Board Member Pete DiCianni, Nybo recently filed Senate Bill 2226, which states that a physician, physician’s assistant or advanced practice registered nurse with prescriptive authority who will provide a prescription or standing order for epinephrine for an Illinois police department will not be subject to civil or professional liability for law enforcement’s misuse of the medication.

“It’s critical that this language passes so that we can take on the public health crisis of ‘anaphylaxis,’ and arm our first responders with the tools they need to save children and adults who suffer from nut and food allergies and various other triggers of anaphylaxis, like bee stings and poisons,” said DiCianni. “Prescribers must be held harmless in this effort, just as first responders and teachers are in various forms of legislation that are already on the books today in schools and other venues.”

Senate Bill 2226 is in the Senate Assignments Committee with potential to be reviewed during the2018 Spring Legislative Session.

ICGS holds fund drive for victims of Harvey, Irma During the week of September 11th, students at Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst took part in a fundraising relief effort for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Initiated by the National Catholic Education Association, a professional membership organization that provides leadership, direction, and service to fulfill the evangelizing, catechizing, and teaching mission of the Catholic Church, “Student to

Student: A Catholic School Response to Hurricane Harvey & Hurricane Irma” was established to help Catholic schools impacted by the storm rebuild, reopen and re-enroll students.

NCEA asked every Catholic school family to consider contributing at least $1.

Wilder Mansion was decorated in festive fashion on Thursday, Aug. 24, when the Elmhurst League of Women Voters (ELWV) gathered to celebrate its 85th anniversary. Ladies enjoyed refreshments and conversation, while perusing scrapbooks assembled by various club historians over the years.

Guests found it interesting to see old photos of themselves or friends, some now deceased, along with newspaper clippings of past events and the causes the group has supported.

The League of Women Voters is a national organization which has always been a non-partisan, issues-oriented volunteer association that neither supports nor opposes candidates or parties. Rather, it is committed to encouraging open, responsive, and effective government brought about by informed, involved citizens. The League does its part to provide unbiased information to the public to help voters make intelligent decisions on the candidates and issues on Election Day. The LWV of Elmhurst has further provided support to various community endeavors. During the past 85 years, the local organization has worked for referenda to support good schools; passage of the 1970 Illinois Constitution; protection of voting

Carrie Lane Chapman Catt was the last role Baldwin took on to bring the program full circle. As an advocate for woman suffrage and world peace, it was no surprise that Susan B. Anthony chose Catt as her successor to the president of the NAWSA in 1900. Then in 1920, Catt founded the League of Women Voters that remains to this day. The League’s founding convention took place in Chicago.

All in all, the program served as a satisfying way to celebrate the Elmhurst LWV’s 85th anniversary. And to quote Carrie Chapman Catt, “The vote is the emblem of your equality… the guarantee of your liberty… a power.”

The program for the evening was called “A Long Road To Victory,” written and presented by Annette M. Baldwin, a one-woman performance featuring her portrayals of unconventional women who have influenced the women’s right to vote and other issues over the past 85 years.

Early days of reform— 1833-1900 By changing costumes Baldwin was able to portray different characters throughout history, beginning with Lucretia Coffin Mott, a Quaker minister who founded the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833. Next, Baldwin took the role of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a philosopher, writer and orator in the 19th century who addressed many “radical reforms” of her day such as, temperance, women’s property rights, anti-slavery, dress reform and divorce.

Kids join Run for Hunger to benefit food pantries

Join the jocks, brainiacs, thespians, cheerleaders, and all the Wildcats when the Elmhurst Children’s Theatre lights up the stage with their rendition of the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical on Oct. 20, 21, and 22.

A modern day revamping of Romeo and Juliet, High School Musical has something for everyone: basketball, theatre, skateboarding, calculus, but most of all, award-winning musical numbers performed by the exceptional ensemble of Elmhurst Children’s Theatre.

Troy is the captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella is a shy transfer student who soon becomes the star of the scholastic decathlon team. When they discover a mutual love of singing, they both decide to take a chance and try out for the school play. The student body experiences an identity crisis and does everything they can to stop them in order to maintain the status quo.

Elmhurst Children’s Theatre is thrilled to have director David Rice return for his fourth production with the troop.

Music Director Lisa Griffith and choreographer Shanae Sterba are working tirelessly to get the eager cast show-ready for opening night.

Will the Wildcats win the state basketball championship now that their captain is pursuing his dream to sing? Will Gabriella’s new friends convince her that Troy is all wrong for her? Will Ryan and Sharpay, the uncontested leads in every school play be able to thwart their unexpected competition? And what about the status quo??

Performances are Friday Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., Saturday Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. The show is at Timothy Christian High School, 188 W. Butterfield Road in Elmhurst.

Park District to show Caddyshack at Movie on the Green Last fall residents had an opportunity to complete a community-wide survey related to parks and recreation in Elmhurst. According to survey results, residents felt they were missing out on adult events and entertainment in the parks. So this fall, the Elmhurst Park District is bringing you the first Movie on the Green, an adult evening complete with a showing of the golf classic Caddyshack!

Get a sitter, leave the kids at home and head out to the Movie on the Green on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. at Sugar Creek Golf Course, 500 E. Van Buren St., in Villa Park. The movie will begin at 7 p.m., but come early to secure your seat on the driving range, sample a variety of menu items at a number of local food trucks, participate in games and contests for prizes, and grab an adult beverage in

the clubhouse. Admission is free!

Art Institute of Chicago, Foulser had attended numerous textile exhibits, which made her think The Art Institute might be interested in her quilt.

After sending a letter along with pictures of the quilt to the textile department, Foulser received word from the curator that pending ap-

proval from the Board of Trustees, they would except her donation.

“A few weeks ago, the assistant textile curator contacted me to say the quilt, which the curator said dates back to the 1890s, is going to be part of an upcoming quilt exhibition at The Art Institute,” she said. “I think it is wonderful that

this quilt has found a good home.”

The quilt will be on display at the exhibition entitled Making Memories: Quilts as Souvenirs, which runs from Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 to Sunday, March 18, 2018 in Galleries 57-59 on the lower level of The Art Institute of Chicago.

‘Works on Paper’ exhibit begins at Elmhurst College Three Chicago-based, Latino artists will exhibit their works on paper this fall at Elmhurst College. Herman Aguirre, Javier Chavira and Gabriel Villa are stylistically diverse artists who work in a variety of media. Each artist expresses a very personal vision. Aguirre’s images are concerned with issues of loss and human fragility. Chavira’s drawings reference nature and celebrate the beauty of abstraction. Villa’s works portray the struggle of everyday life and the human condition.

The “Works on Paper” exhibition can be viewed days and evenings through Saturday, Nov. 11 in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Hospital awards ‘Run of the Month’ to Elmhurst Fire Department Paramedics Danielle Fernandez and Sarah Hand, and Firefighters Patrick Evoy, Lt. Jeff Hayes, Gary Klecka and Tim Lisowski were recognized for their care of an 80-year-old man who fell while at church and was no longer breathing. The team’s efforts on that day prompted the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital EMS to award the Elmhurst Fire Department with its “Run of the Month” for May. According to a release from the hospital, when the crew arrived, bystanders were performing CPR. Paramedic Hand continued CPR and then Paramedic Fernandez delivered a shock from an Automated External Defibrillator, after which the patient was breathing and had a pulse. The paramedics provided additional treatment in the ambulance while on the way to Hospital’s Emergency Department. The patient was admitted to the hospital and released a few days later.

In the “Run of the Month” program, Elmhurst Hospital’s EMS Team reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital providers and selects one to be recognized based on strict criteria which includes communication, documentation, assessment and going beyond the call.

WorkNet DuPage, COD partner for new women-focused career series WorkNet DuPage is partnering with College of DuPage to host the first Breaking Boundaries: A Career Series for Women. Health Department to use grant to combat opioid crisis The DuPage County Health Department will receive $1.5 million dollars in federal funds over the next four years to provide training and medication for emergency treatment of opioid overdose.

“Clearly the opioid crisis is beyond the scope of local assets, so we are thrilled with this infusion of resources,” said Karen Ayala, Health Department Executive Director.

The First Responders-Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) Grant, to provide training and medication for emergency

treatment of opioid overdose, is authorized by the CARA Act of 2016 to fight the opioid epidemic through prevention, treatment, recovery, overdose reversal, and other efforts.

There have been 105 lives saved in 2017 through the use of Narcan, which reverses the effects of opioids.

The DNP has saved 344 lives since the program was initiated in 2013, under the leadership of DuPage County Coroner, Dr. Richard Jorgensen and the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association.

Dan Cronin, DuPage County Board Chairman said, “I would like to congratulate the Health Department for securing this grant to continue DuPage County’s fight against opioid abuse and heroin addiction.

The DNP has trained law enforcement officials across our County and other counties across our region, saving countless lives. This grant will enable us to continue our efforts to decrease the number of heroin- and opioid-related deaths.

We would also like to thank our Congressional delegation for their support in acquiring this grant.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded an additional $144.1 million in grants to prevent and treat opioid addiction in support of President Trump’s commitment to combat the opioid crisis. The CARA grant is administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The York football team lost a 31-7 West Suburban Conference Silver Division decision to Hinsdale Central in a Week 5 matchup in Elmhurst.

The loss dropped York to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in WSC Silver play. York was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

Hinsdale Central, the defending WSC Silver champion, moved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

York returns to action Friday when it heads over to Villa Park to face 4-1 Willowbrook in the annual renewal of this neighborhood rivalry.

IC Catholic Prep gridders defeat St. Edward

Knights inch closer to becoming playoff eligible

The IC Catholic Prep football team moved closer to officially be able to defend its 2016 Class 3A state title.

The Knights were 56-13 winners against Elgin St. Edward in a Week 5 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contest at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The win put IC Catholic Prep at 4-1 overall. The Knights need one more win to officially become playoff eligible. IC Catholic Prep has won 18 of its last 19 contests.

After racking up 671 total yards of offense in a Week 4 win against Chicago Christian, the Knights again piled up the numbers against St. Edward. The Knights earned 21 first downs in the game compared to St. Edward’s three.

Three quarterbacks combined to throw for 161 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. CJ West went 3-for-4 for 85 yards and two touchdowns, while Khalil Saunders was 5-for-8 for 64 yards and a touchdown. Tommy Ryan completed three passes for 12 yards.

The Knights gained 333 yards on only 32 carries and this time averaged a first down rushing every time it touched the football (10.4 yards per carry).

Freshman Kyle Franklin ran eight times for 94 yards and had one touchdown. He had a long run of 53 yards.

Lazerick Eatman ran 11 times for 89 yards and scored three touchdowns. He had a long run of 23 yards.

Senior Daniel Gibbons ran five times for 85 yards and had a touchdown.

His long run was 70 yards. West ran two times for 40 yards with a long run of 34 yards and Saunders ran five times for 24 yards.

Seam Hipskind caught three passes for 83 yards and hauled in two touchdown receptions. Khali Saunders had two catches for 44 yards and had a touchdown. His long catch was 28 yards.

A total of eight IC Catholic Prep players caught passes, including freshmen Anhtony Parille and Chancee Lee. On defense, sophomore Kevin Cooke had 10 tackles to lead the team. Kemon Reese had seven tackles, while Khali Saunders had six and Max Cook tallied four.

The Knights also registered five quarterback sacks on defense. Cooke and Jack Enright each had two sacks while Khali Saunders added one.

Steven Crady and Hipskind each had an interception. Khalil Saunders had a pass deflection. Cook had a 10yard fumble recovery and Reese also recovered a fumble. Eastman and West each scored a two-point conversion.

The Knights hit the road Friday to face Riverside-Brookfield in a MSC Blue matchup.

Timothy Christian picks up pair of wins

Thompson, Carstensen pull out thrilling tiebreaker win in doubles play

The Timothy Christian girls tennis team picked up a pair of recent wins to move its record to 5-5 overall on the season.

The Trojans were 5-0 winners against Ridgewood to move to 2-0 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division action.

Timothy also downed Nazareth Academy 3-2 in nonconference play. The match came down to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles where the Trojans’ duo of Anna Thompson and Abby Carstensen pulled out the 11-9 tiebreaker win after being down 8-4.

Timothy also lost 3-2 to Wheaton Academy in a MSC crossover match. Abygale Ahn won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while freshman Cassandra Lee won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Through late last week, Lee was 19-1 on the season, while Ahn, who pulls double duty in the fall also playing on the varsity volleyball team, was 12-1.

“Cassie Lee is off to a great start in her high-school career,” said Timothy Christian coach Keith Mills. “She improves her game with each match played.”

Lee won the District 88 Invitational No. 1 doubles title and earned a first-place medal at the Niles North Invitational at first doubles with Ahn. Mills also noted Avy Traux has come on strong lately at the No. 1 doubles position where she contributed to wins against St. Viator and Nazareth. Carstensen has picked up three wins in recent contests, Mills noted.

Thompson has played with four different doubles partners.

“Abby is a first-year junior who is skilled but is still learning to win and understand doubles strategy better,” said Mills. “Anna has been very steady all year and is beginning to play attacking doubles with a lot of success.”

Mills added Timothy has only one loss between Ahn and Lee at No. 1 singles the entire season. “When combining Abygale and Cassandra at singles we have swept singles against Glenbard South, IC Catholic Prep and Wheaton Academy,” said Mills of those three teams on the opposite side of the MSC. Mills noted he will play Ahn or Lee at No. 1 doubles to boost the doubles division. “That seems to be the key to improving our overall doubles depth,” he said.

“Our second doubles, though, still has been a mix of players.”

However, Mills has been pleased with the team’s recent progress in doubles play. “We starting to show improvement in attacking doubles play,” he said.

“We have been too passive for the most part. We’re attempting to get to the net more and that has helped.”

“It was an up and down week,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack. “It was fun playing the likes of New Trier, Loyola, Lake Forest and Mundelein in the tournament.

Connon and Charlie acquitted themselves very well in a high-powered environment, but we were a little flat further down the lineup.”

Sujack added the team also enjoyed a special treat playing at River Forest Country Club. “River Forest afforded us the opportunity to play

an outstanding track and we beat a team we were expected to,” he said.

The coach then noted the team struggled in its regular-season finale in Indiana. “Illiana Christian, however, was a challenge up and down the lineup,” he said. “We didn’t perform like we could have. It was a big country golf course that took it to us.”

IC Catholic Prep played earlier in the week in the Metro Suburban Conference tournament held at The Sanctuary in New Lenox.

“Regardless, this is a motivated group and we get another shot at Illiana in a few days at conference,” Sujack said late last week.

IC Catholic Prep finished the regular season 9-2 overall and brought a 7-1 conference record into the MSC meet in New Lenox.

The York girls tennis team hit the road last week and came back with a pair of dual-meet victories.

The Dukes were 5-2 non-conference winners against Maine South in Park Ridge. Aleksina Jovic was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at No. 1 singles, while Eva Jacobsthal was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles.

Melissa Cartis and Gianna Nikoleit were 6-3, 6-2 winners at No. 1 doubles, while Cate Duhig and Jacki Riek were 6-2, 6-4 winners at No. 2 doubles. Lauren Fonorow and Cristina Gamboa were 7-6 (7), 6-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.

York then was an 8-1 West Suburban Conference Silver Division winner at Downers Grove North to move to 15-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
