Man sentenced in absentia to 27 years for sexual assault of minor Officials seek help in locating suspect missing since March 2016

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a West Chicago man was sentenced in absentia to 27 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for sexually assaulting an underage girl on multiple occasions.

On July 12, a jury found Cesar Avalos, 42, guilty in absentia of three counts of Criminal Sexual Assault (Class 1 Felony) and three counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 2 Felony.) The trial was held in front of Judge Robert Miller. A no-bond arrest warrant for Avalos remains outstanding.

Avalos posted the necessary $25,000 and was released from custody. After he failed to appear at any further court proceedings, the Court issued a $750,000 arrest warrant for him in October 2017. In April 2018, with

Mr. Avalos still not in custody, the Court issued a no-bond arrest warrant.

“What Mr. Avalos did to his young victim is just sickening,” Berlin said.

“While Mr. Avalos may believe that

he will be able to skirt responsibility for what he did to his young victim, make no mistake, we will continue our efforts to locate him and hold him accountable. When Mr. Avalos is taken into custody he will have a

27-year sentence behind bars waiting for him.”

The sentencing was the result of allegations that from July 2014 through October 2015, Avalos sexually assaulted his victim at a West Chicago residence. Avalos’ actions were uncovered in early 2016, when the victim went to the hospital for an unrelated matter and disclosed what happened to hospital personnel. Authorities at the hospital immediately contacted the West Chicago Police Department who in turn contacted the DuPage County Children’s Center for investigation.

Avalos was subsequently arrested without incident and appeared in Bond Court on March 9, 2016 where bond was set at $250,000 with 10 percent to apply. On March 25, 2016,

D205 to host building tours leading up to November referendum vote

Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 will offer building tours of several campuses in the weeks leading up to referendum bond vote on Election Day, Nov. 6. The tours are open to the community and designed as a chance for taxpayers to learn more about the referendum and ask questions.

The first tour was held on Monday, Sept. 24 at Lincoln School. A Community School Finance Night presentation follows at 7 p.m. School officials will be present to discuss the district’s financial picture as well as answer questions.

GERALD O’TOOLE, 87 Gerald O’Toole, formerly of Elmhurst, passed away recently at the age of 87. Beloved husband of the late Matilda C. (nee Pecis); loving father of Scott (Ann) O’Toole and Lisa (Salvador) Santoyo; proud grandfather of Michael, Sharon (Jason) Grabowski, Veronica (Freddy) Sotelo, and Salvador Jr.; honored great grandfather of Skyler, Tristian, Jay, Jr., Enzo and Layla. Gerry was the 6th of 11 children and wonderful uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Born in Liverpool, England, Gerry endured the harshness of WW II and moved to the U.S. in 1959 and married Matilda in 1960. Gerry was a talented electrical engineer, exercise enthusiast and very charitable. He loved to garden, read and was a family Superman. He led by example with a smiling confidence. Though a slight man in stature, he has cast a long shadow of love, charity and family and will forever be missed. Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Visitation Catholic Church, 779 S. Pastor’s golf challenge on par for fundraising fun Epiphany Lutheran Men in Mission holds golf outing

Hoping your pastor messes up, especially on a Sunday, is definitely wrong – unless it was all for fun and charity at the 2018 Golf Outing of Epiphany Lutheran Church’s Men in Mission group.

In all, eight golfers won the “Beat the Pastor” challenge recently at Sugar Creek Golf Course. They earned bragging rights, a group photo and an “I Beat the Pastor” pin, for besting Epiphany Senior Pastor Ron Feltman at hitting a ball closest to the 9th-hole pin.

The Men in Mission Golf Outing, attended by 52 golfers and guests, raised funds to benefit needy individuals and families, as well as other charitable groups and programs.

“It was a very successful event, made entirely possible by the generosity of others,” said the Men in Mission Co-Chairman Tom Connolly.

“We’re extremely grateful.”

“While ‘Beat the Pastor’ has a rather ominous name, it’s a lot of fun,” Pastor Feltman said. “Some years we need a wide-angle lens to get everyone in the picture, but this year I was more on my game.”

Besides competing for lowest overall scores, golfers vied for raffle tickets in contests including longest drive and longest putt. There were 25 businesses and individuals donated to the Sept. 16th event, which the Elmhurst church organization holds annually.

“Our Men in Mission organization has a long history of serving our congregation and the community, all while having a lot of fun!” Feltman said. “I’m proud of their hard work and generosity.”

County Board of Health recognizes ‘Recovery Month’ in DuPage County HOPE Taskforce offers website with resources

September is National Recovery Month, and the DuPage County Board of Health and Health Department is joining efforts with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to increase awareness and understanding of mental health and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover.

In a resolution, the DuPage County Board of Health supports National Recovery Month and the theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.”

Like many communities across the country, DuPage County is facing an

opioid epidemic that has cut short the lives of too many of our residents.

As part of its response, the DuPage County Heroin Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce is announcing a new website that provides information to residents seeking help with opioid use – hopedupage.org.

If you, a loved one or someone you know needs help with substance use, visit hopedupage.org, to be linked to treatment, support services, and education and prevention information available right here in DuPage County. Parents, community members and professionals are urged to visit the web site to learn about and help end

the opioid crisis.

The HOPE Taskforce developed a five-point framework to address the opioid epidemic that includes, reducing access to drugs; reducing opioid use and misuse; increasing overdose response; integrating mental health and substance use disorder treatment and recovery; and substance use prevention and education.

Nicor partners with local fire departments to promote natural gas safety Events planned to coincide with National Fire Prevention Week

Kick-off fundraiser deemed successful, garners $16,000

The YES for D205 New Schools Referendum ballot initiative committee held a fundraising event on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Cottage Hill Station to kick off its YES for D205 initiative. The Elmhurst CUSD District #205 community was invited to attend and learn more about the school referendum that will be on the Nov. 6th ballot. With more than 100 persons attending, the Committee raised more than $16,000 that evening.

“We were thrilled with the monetary support, but even more excited about the level of interest shown by the District 205 community,” said Emily Bastedo, chair of YES for D205. “YES for D205 committee

members spent the evening engaged in thoughtful conversations about the fundamental needs of the referendum and the importance of community investment in schools … I found the support to be inspiring.”

The YES for D205 mission is to actively engage the community to educate and provide factual information for the November 6th school referendum, which includes: • Renovations to every school and new buildings for the two oldest elementary schools – Lincoln and Field • Modernization of school entrances to make schools safer and more secure • Updated technology infrastructure

The York boys varsity soccer team (recently ranked 9th in state) will be playing in their home stadium on Friday night Oct. 5. This is the first time the team has every played a Friday night game at home and the players are looking forward to it.

Known as “Friday Night Futbol,” all of the local travel soccer teams, AYSO, and Access Sports Club players are invited out for a fun night of “futbol.”

Concessions stands will be open with proceeds to benefit the Dukes Soccer Charity Ball Campaign. The

campaign is an effort on behalf Charityball.org, which provides new soccer balls to kids in poverty-stricken communities around the world.

York is working on a halftime show for Oct. 5 and the players will all be wearing their Friday Night Futbol shirts for warm-ups.

The schedule for Oct. 5 is the Sophomore match will be played at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Varsity game at 6:30. The teams will play against Riverside-Brookfield at Clarence D. East Field at York High School. The public is urged to attend.

Local resident recognized for service to Illinois 4-H

The Illinois 4-H Foundation annually recognizes 4-H volunteers for exemplary service, and this year, three volunteers from the western suburbs were inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame. The honoree from DuPage County is Elmhurst resident Steven Ford, who has been an active volunteer for DuPage County 4-H and University of Illinois Extension for nearly a decade.

“We are grateful that Steven is always willing to lend his time and expertise in the success of efforts, such as International Night, the County Fair, the 4-H Shooting Sports program, and Spring Break workshops,” said Christine Birns, 4-H Program Coordinator for DuPage County. “He truly believes ‘many hands make light work,’ which also is an important 4-H tenet.”

Steven Ford Also a 4-H parent, Ford has served and Review Committee, and on the in multiple volunteer roles, including as a contact leader for the Trinity local Tri-County Extension Council.

He was among 67 new members Trailblazers 4-H Club, as a member of the DuPage County Expansion named to the Illinois 4-H Hall of

Fame. Inductees were celebrated at a special event at the Illinois State Fair in August.

“These long-time volunteers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,” said Angie Barnard, Illinois 4-H Foundation executive director.

“They are caring, dedicated, generous leaders, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to provide this honor to each and every one of them to thank them for their service to this wonderful organization.”

The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the statewide Hall of Fame in 2004 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers, and former 4-H staff. Each inductee received a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion.

“As a result of these volunteers’ years of service and leadership to Illinois 4-H, the program they love will continue to create wonderful opportunities for the young people whose lives it touches,” Barnard said.

Lezza is celebrating three years in Elmhurst and 113 years in Chicagoland. It all started with a very special spumoni created and lovingly produced by Lezza Spumoni & Dessert, Inc. The origin of this spumoni is Naples, Italy and the recipe came to Chicago’s West Side with Salvatore Lezza in 1905. The recipe has been in the family for over a century.

Salvatore handed down the secret of genuine spumoni to his son Victor. Today 3rd and 4th generation of the Lezza family - the founder’s grandson Edward and great grandsons Louis and Ed Jr. - successfully run the company with the same old world flair. Now, over 100 years and 4 generations later, one thing that has stayed the same is the love and quality that has been put into all of their products from the very beginning.

The secret of spumoni wasn’t the only masterpiece passed down through the generations.

Offering home healthcare, other services to seniors since 1985 With Betty Read at the helm, Wisdom Eldercare has been offering in-home healthcare for seniors plus a full range of elder care services since 1985.

The business is located at 386 N. York St. Suite 200 in Elmhurst.

Read served as the Elmhurst Coordinator for Senior Services at City Hall for four years and during that time, she helped establish the Elmhurst Senior Citizens Commission and Ellen Read CEO served as its president for three years. Betty was also Senior Case Coordinator for DuPage County Senior Services for three years.

Now, her daughter Ellen Read serves as CEO, in fact, all six of Betty’s children have worked in the business.

Asked who influenced her career, Betty said the work of Mother Teresa has been her inspiration.

“Her quote was, ‘I cannot do great things but I can do many small things with great love,’” she said.

And what advice would she give to someone starting out in business?

“Plan the right product at the right time at the right price,” Betty said. “Believe in yourself. Have crystal clear goals but be flexible about how to achieve the goals.”

When she’s not managing the business, Betty enjoys reading and gardening.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement

Sept. 6-Sept. 7 Police said an agent for a victim’s company in the 300 block of W. Lake told police at around 9:41 a.m. that an unknown suspect damaged a semi-trailer by spray painting graffiti markings on the side of the trailer while it was parked overnight in the lot. The victim reports the same trailer was vandalized in the same manner six months ago.

Child endangerment

Sept. 19 Police said that in the 300 block of Commonwealth at around 5:15 a.m., a witness observed a black Chevrolet Cavalier (unknown license plate) parked in front of his house at Commonwealth/Beverly facing the wrong direction. He observed two male white teens running northbound on Commonwealth. One male, carrying a bag, entered the black vehicle and fled in an unknown direction. Officers checked the park district building at Eldridge Park and discovered the soda machine had been damaged. The cash dispenser slot had been broken out as though someone was attempting to steal money out of the machine.

Numerous broken pieces were scattered on the ground in front of the machine.

Sept. 6 Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of an unattended 1-yearold child left sleeping in a vehicle. The reporting officer located the child who was secured in a child safety seat in the rear passenger side.

Officers were able to locate the child’s mother who stated she did not want to wake the child, according to police. The mother, Cristina Filipa, 31, of Addison, was charged with child endangerment.

Disorderly conduct

Sept. 9 Police said officers responded for a complaint of an intoxicated person on the complainant’s front porch in the 800 block of Washington at around 6:25 a.m. The suspect, Daniel Sullivan, 27, of New Lenox, was located near a school, according to police. Sullivan was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication.

Sept. 8 Police said officers responded to the 500 block of N. York at around 5:10 p.m. for the report of a man lying in the parking lot. Officers located Robert Baldwin, 68, of Elmhurst, and found him to be intoxicated, according to police. He was issued a citation for public intoxication.

Sept. 7 Darla A. Figved, 51, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication near Prospect and Van Buren at around 10:43 p.m.

Police said school resource officers at York High School responded to the school cafeteria at around 1:33 p.m. for a report of a fight that had just occurred. A reporting officer made contact with both juveniles. One of the juveniles was issued citations for disorderly conduct and possession of alternative nicotine products. The other juvenile was issued a ci-

Sept. 6 Police said officers were advised of a fight in progress in the school cafeteria at York High School at around 1:10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located the two who were involved in a physical fight during their lunch period. Each was cited for disorderly conduct and their respective parents were notified.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance

Sept. 18 Police said a suspect became upset at the victim because she was made to clean her room. The suspect went to the kitchen and took a knife from the kitchen counter. The suspect was restrained by her father. The suspect’s parents declined medical evaluation, stating they would take the suspect for treatment.

Police said responding officers met with a victim and the suspect at in the 200 block of W. First at around 7:44 p.m. The victim related he began walking toward the door when the suspect grabbed him from behind. The victim pushed the suspect aside and exited the apartment. Due to conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

Police said responding officers met with a suspect in the 100 block of E. Grand at around 8:23 p.m., who related she had gotten into a verbal argument earlier in the night with her boyfriend. When they returned to her apartment, the suspect slapped the victim in the face and the victim then pushed the suspect back. Due to conflicting stories and no visible signs of injury, no arrests were made.

Sept. 8 A 42-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 1:05 a.m. Police said a witness confirmed that a battery occurred whereby the suspect choked and pulled the victim’s hair.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Sept. 9 Daniel Defily, 32, of Lombard, was charged with DUI drugs and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Riverside at around 12:28 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 2:46 a.m., Samantha Ocampo, 19, of Berwyn, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to have consumed alcohol and was under the age of 21.

She was issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Sept. 8 Jeremy L. Hansen, 41, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for public intoxication in the 200 block of E. Third at around 2:10 a.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for Hansen, who was allegedly passed out on the sidewalk. Officers located Hansen who was found to be intoxicated and sustained an abrasion to his right foot, according to police.

Police said that subsequent to a DUI following call, a vehicle was located and stopped near Bensenville at Church and McLean at around 2:57 a.m. The allegedly vehicle fled from the traffic stop and was eventually located in Bensenville. Jesse C. Ingram, 20, of Bensenville, was taken into custody and transported to the police station. He was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor, obstructing a police officer, driving while license suspended, improper lane usage and no insurance.

Police said Ingram also was found to be wanted out of DuPage County.

Raymond Quinones, 43, of Hanover Park, was charged with DUI, injuring city property, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane usage subsequent to a single car crash investigation in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 6:11 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding

Sept.9 Police said that while on patrol near North and Melrose at around 4:15 a.m., a reporting officer conducted a registration check on a Ford Explorer, which returned with a stolen vehicle hit out of Niles. Upon attempting to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, eastbound on I-290 from North Avenue. Officers also attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Lexus which was traveling with the Ford Explorer. That vehicle also fled at a high rate of speed and was found to be a freshly stolen vehicle out of Glenview.

Harassment, threats

Sept. 19 A victim in the 100 block of Knighton Place related to a responding officer at around 4:24 p.m. that the suspect worked for them briefly and was let go from the job. The victim received threatening text messages from the suspect, who then threated the victim’s assistant as well. The victim did not want to sign complaints but wanted the victim to be contacted by police.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Sept. 18 Clifton Calvert, 28, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, attempted obstructing justice, speeding, failure to signal, improper lane usage and littering subsequent to a traffic stop near Kenilworth and Crescent at around 6:25 p.m. Police said Calvert was found to be in possession of a spoon which contained heroin residue.

Sept. 10 Wilfrido Manjarrez, 30, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, speeding and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at around 2:57 a.m.

Shannon K. Trotter, 31, of Detroit, Mich., was issue citations for possession of cannabis, illegal transportation of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control device, while Demetrius Cade, 43, of Detroit, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and illegal transportation of alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 3:35 a.m.

Sept. 8 Nolan Ryan Murnick, 24, of Downers Grove, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Commerce at around 12:13 a.m.

Sept. 6 Austin Maher, 20, and Natasha Jung, 19, both of Downers Grove, were issued citations for possession of cannabis in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 6:54 p.m.

Police said officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 500 block of E. Park at around 7:22 a.m. Prior to the officers’ arrival, police said the suspect, Scott Muehring, 43, of Elmhurst, left the residence. A subsequent investigation revealed a domestic argument had escalated to both parties pushing each other, according to police. The victim advised officers Muehring was known to keep cannabis in the house, police said. During a consent search of the residence, police said officers located cannabis and a scale. According to police, Muehring admitted to ownership of the contraband. He came into the police station and was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Suspicious circumstances

Aug. 21-Sept. 8 A victim in the 600 block of Armitage told police at around 11:24 a.m. they are the owner of an unoccupied house. The victim reports receiving mailings addressed to unknown suspects. The mailings are from the Illinois Secretary of State, Selective Service System, and a company. A neighbor of the victim reported seeing the driver of a white sedan removing mail from the mailbox on several occasions.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Sept. 19 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of E. Park at around 9:26 p.m. A victim told police that she was contacted by her bank and told her debit card had been compromised.

There were multiple unauthorized charges to the card, and it has been cancelled.

Sept. 18-Sept. 19 Attempted theft was reported in the 100 block of S. West. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) attempted to break into the vending machine on the north side of the athletic building at Plunket Park between the above dates. The vending machine had extensive damage to the bill collector on the front of the machine but no cash was removed.

Sept. 18 Attempted burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 1:32 p.m. A victim related to the responding officer he had parked his vehicle in the front lot of the business at 12:20 p.m. and returned at 1:20 p.m. to find the lock cylinder on the driver’s door had been punched through the door panel. The victim related that entry was not gained

New Principal announced The Visitation School community has introduced its new Principal, Mrs. Carrie Mijal.

Mijal comes to Visitation with more than 35 years in education, serving as Principal of St. Robert Bellarmine in Chicago for the last ten years. She has a B.S. in Education from Northern Illinois University; an M.A. in Education, Curriculum and Instruction and a M.A. in Education and Education-

al Leadership, both from Concordia University.

“The students and families have been so welcoming to me,” said Mrs. Mijal on her start at Visitation. “What I like most about Visitation School is the faculty and staff are smart, kind, flexible and fun. The school community is very supportive and the children come to school each day eager and ready to learn in the spirt that Jesus taught us!”

Hailing from Oak Park, Mrs. Mijal and her husband are long time parishioners of St. Giles Catholic Church and she is mom to two adult children who are her pride and joy. She is thrilled to lead Visitation School into the next era and continue the strong tradition of Catholic education and community that Visitation is known for.

Visitation Catholic School was founded in 1954 by the Adrian Do-

Visitation holds Back to School Curriculum Night On Thursday, Aug. 30, Visitation parents gathered together in the school gym to kick-off this year’s Curriculum Night. Principal Carrie Mijal welcomed parents and talked about the new anti-bullying program the school is implementing called “Peacebuilders.”

The night allowed parents to meet teachers and learn about the upcoming school year. Teachers shared the curriculum being used along with classroom procedures and expectations.

LIHEAP applications to begin Oct. 1

People with disabilities can now begin the application process for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program applications on Oct/ 1 this year.

Beginning Oct. 1, applications can be submitted and appointments can be made through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Community.

Customers must bring all required documentation when applying for assistance including: • Proof of gross income from all household members for the 30-day income period beginning with the date of the application.

• A copy of their current heat and electric bills issued within the last

30 days (if they pay for their energy directly).

• A copy of their rental agreement (if they are renting) showing that utilities are included, the monthly rental amount and landlord contact information.

• Proof of Social Security numbers for all household members.

• Proof that their household received Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Aid to the Aged, Blind, or Disabled (AABD); or other benefits, such as Medical Eligibility or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), if receiving assistance from the Illinois Department of Human Services.

Disconnected households and

families with children ages 5 or under (includes all children who are not yet 6 years old, that is, up to 5 years and 364 days) can begin applying for LIHEAP assistance beginning Nov. 1. Individuals not eligible for priority enrollment can apply beginning Dec. 1.

LIHEAP applicants will be served on a first-come, first-served basis until May 31, 2019, or until funding is exhausted.

LIHEAP is a state and federally funded energy assistance program for low-income families, in which heating bill payments are made on behalf of households. Applications are processed through a network of 35 local administering agencies

around the state.

A single-person household can qualify with a monthly income of up to $1,518; a two-person household up to $2,058; a family of three can earn up to $2,598; and a family of four can earn up to $3,138. Benefits are paid directly to energy vendors on behalf of eligible households.

The exception is households whose heating costs are included in their rent.

IC Catholic Prep pounded out 311 yards on the ground on 37 carries (8.74 yards per carry). Kyle Franklin ran the ball 25 times for 196 yards and scored two touchdowns. Steven Crady ran six times for 100 yards, scored a touchdown and had a 74yard run. Will Cooke ran two times for 19 yards and scored a touchdown.

Franklin, a sophomore, has now run 105 times for 788 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. He’s averaging 7.5 yards per run and 157.6 yards per game.

Khalil Saunders completed 5 of 12 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Six different IC Catholic Prep receivers caught passes. Ryan Malek caught a 24-yard touchdown pass, while Khali Saunders caught a 42-yard touchdown pass. Jalen Bates had a 20-yard catch and Cracy had a 16-yard catch.

IC Catholic Prep only needed to make 58 tackles on defense. Kevin Cooke led the way with eight. Dominick Krepulec had seven, while Koby Reed and Khali Saunders each had six and Kevin Akins had five.

The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team scored a pair of recent wins against Wheaton Academy and Fenton.

In a 25-16, 21-25, 25-12 win against Wheaton Academy, Sophie Hurt had 23 assists, one block, one ace and four digs. Maya Stovall had 12 kills, three blocks and one ace. Jess Sobon had 10

kills. Claire Wagner added three kills, while Bella Leslie had six digs. Kristen Brachmann had two blocks and Olivia Palumbo had two kills and two blocks. Maddie Benson finished with four digs and three aces and Olivia Hurt had 11 digs.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 9-6 overall.

In a 25-14, 25-18 win against Fenton, Hurt had 15 assists, two aces and five digs. Stovall had eight kills and two digs. Jess Sobon had 10 kills.

The IC Catholic Prep girls cross-country team has hit the repeat button when it comes to winning this season.

The Knights have won three meets so far this fall, including the St. Francis invitational, the IC Catholic Prep Knight invitational and a triangular at Westmont.

Frankie Chaidez, Carly Manchester, Kennedy Calcagno, Annie Guinan and Alia Johnson finished second, third, fourth, sixth and 10th respectively at the Knight invite.

At St. Francis, Calcagno, Manchester and Chaidez went 1-2-3 for a sweep of the first three finishing positions. Guinan finished fifth and Johnson took ninth.

Coach Dawn Calcagno was impressed with how Maggie O’Brien and Leeza Maloney competed in the St. Francis meet. “The team’s strong performance was highlighted by strong finishes from Maggie and Leeza,” she said.

The Knights are paced this season by Chaidez, who took third in the state in Class 1A a year ago.

Johnson also has excelled on and off the course.

“Frankie and Alia’s work rates have increased and their mid-season training has been very solid,” said Calcagno.

“The girls want to compete and they have big goals,” she added.

“The girls have shown tremendous grit in handling their business in practices and meets. We are excited to see their continued growth.”

Timothy Christian boys soccer team records two victories

Timothy Christian boys soccer coach Joel Zielke likes how his team has navigated a recent tough stretch of its schedule.

Timothy was 9-6-1 overall through late last week and 2-2 in conference play.

“We are doing well. We had a tough stretch but we did good the last week,” he said. “We’ve been playing a lot of bigger schools. With the exception of a few games, we’ve been in them right down to the wire. It’s been a good experience for us.”

The Trojans lost a recent 1-0 deci-

sion to Riverside-Brookfield. “They scored a goal in the first minute of the game and then we dominated the rest of the game, but were not able to get the ball into the net,” said Zielke.

Timothy also scored a 2-1 win over Ridgewood and defeated Lisle 3-0.

“We are possessing the ball well and defending really well,” said Zielke. “We’re averaging only a goal or a goal-and-a-half against in these games. We have seven shutouts so far this season. Our big thing as a team is we need to work on the final third and finish. It’s been our Achilles’ heel.

We’re getting a lot of good looks, but we can’t consistently put the ball in

the net.”

Individually, Isaiah Whitaker has been playing well. “He’s really stepped up as a leader vocally for us and with his play,” said Zielke. “He had the game-winning goal for us recently in the last minute on a free kick.”

Zielke said the team’s back line has been another bright spot lately. That group includes the likes of Andrew Vogt, Mike Vogt, Matt Van Zeelt and Andrew Petrulakis. “Our back line has done really well,” said Zielke.

Attacking midfielder Josh Wise and outside-mid Carson Hooker lead the team with six goals each. “We also

have a couple guys with four goals each and four guys with one or two goals,” said Zielke. “We’re looking for some consistency there.”

Jonathan Stremler also was cited for recent strong play. “Jonathan has been playing forward and has solidified that spot for us,” said Zielke, who noted Stremler has been battling an injury of late.

Overall, Zielke would like to see more consistency throughout the game. “We’ve played a lot of games where we play well for 60-70 minutes,” he said. “I’m waiting for us to put everything together for the full 80.

In our game against R-B, we played

the best soccer I’ve seen us play with possessing and creating good chances, but we gave up a goal in the first 30 seconds and didn’t recover,” he said. “I want that full 80 minutes and then we can see how great we can do.

I love the work ethic of the boys. It’s a tight-knit group and that is going to help us here for the playoff stretch.”

Timothy played a recent stretch of nine games in a 14-day timeframe.

“That’s pretty brutal,” he said. “Part of that was the Pepsi Showdown and we had some conference games.”

The Trojans played St. Francis earlier this week and will host IC Catholic Prep Friday.

York boys golf team wins Dundee-Crown invitational title; breaks 300 Buckley shoots even par-71 to lead Dukes

The York boys golf team continued its string of successes at 18-hole invitationals.

The Dukes recently won the 24team Dundee-Crown Charger invitational with a score of 296—the squad’s lowest 18-round total of the year and the first time it sank below the high-school gold standard of 300 this season. York shot 301 at the Limestone invitational at the beginning of the season.

It was York’s fourth top-four finish of the season. The Dukes have the D-C win to their credit, along with a second-, third- and fourth-place showing. In those four events, the Dukes went up against a combined 76 teams and amassed those strong showings.

“We had a great (run) winning the 24-team Dundee-Crown Charger invite and winning dual meets against Proviso West and a very good Wheaton North team,” said York coach Jim Borel.

In the D-C triumph, Matt Buckley shot even-par 71 to lead the Dukes.

Aidan Mann shot 74, while Sam Bartolone had a 75 and Josh La Bounty shot 76.

In a 153-170 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win against Proviso West, Preston Krause led the way with a 37. Jacob Wit shot 38, while Blair Faber and James Albin each had 39s.

In York’s 159-161 non-conference win against Wheaton North, Wit shot a 38, while Buckley checked in at 39. LaBounty finished with a 40 and Mann ended with a 42.

The York girls tennis team laid to rest a long-standing losing streak against a conference foe.

The Dukes were recent 4-3 winners against Lyons Township in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division contest at the Lyons South campus in Western Springs.

It was York’s first victory over Lyons Township on the varsity level since 2009. The win moved the Dukes to 13-6 overall and 3-2 in WSC Silver play.

“Our team is really hitting their stride and playing with a lot of confidence,” said York coach Tres Heimann. “This is a quality win over a good conference opponent.”

Melissa Cartis was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles. “Melissa played a very smart match and was very consistent,” said Heimann.

Gianna Nikoleit was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles and moved to 16-4 on the season. “Gianna continued her strong campaign,” Heimann added.

Rachel Kayman and Micki Neidigh were 7-5, 6-3 winners at No. 3 doubles. “Rachel and Micki played a very consistent match,” the coach said. Kayman and Neidigh clinched the win for York with the score tied

3-3 prior to them finishing. It was the duo’s second match-winning contest. They did the same thing in a 4-3 win over Oak Park-River Forest in a recent WSC Silver contest. “They have come up big in the clutch for us multiple times this season,” Heimann said.

Cristina Gamboa and Annalise Soldano were 6-0, 6-1 winners. Gamboa moved to 13-4 and Soldano improved to 16-3. “Cristina and Annalise continued their strong season with a solid win,” said Heimann.

In York’s 4-3 win over OPRF at Berens Park in Elmhurst, Cartis was a 6-2, 6-1 winner. Nikoleit was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles and Soldano was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 3 singles. Kayman and Neidigh were 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 winners at No. 3 doubles.

York also split two matches in a tri-meet with Homewood-Flossmoor and Lake Forest at Berens Park. In a 6-1 win over H-F, Cartis was a 6-0, 6-2 winner. One area of consistency for York this season has been its defense. “We’re solid defensively,” said Majewski. “We’ve given up five goals all year. The one thing we need to improve on is finishing. We’ve been working on that the last couple weeks in practice.”

Goalie Kyle Johnson has been a standout for York. “Kyle has been playing really well,” said Majewski. “He organizes the back for us.”

Another stalwart on defense has been Eduardo DelCarmen. “Those two (Johnson and DelCarmen) are the leaders for us in the back,” said Majewski. “They are the traffic cops. Everything runs through them.”

Midfield play also has been part of York’s recipe for success. “Our midfield is solid,”

the coach said. “We’re finding and creating opportunities. We don’t always finish though.

Now, it’s more of a focus on the final third of the field. We can put teams away even quicker. Against Waubonsie Valley we scored two goals in the first five minutes and possessed the ball. Against Proviso West we scored in the first 30 seconds of the game.

We want to get ahead and play our game which is having the other team chase the ball and cover.”

Joe Meade and Jack Musial are tied for the team lead in goals with five each.

York is scheduled to play three home games this week.

The Dukes hosted Lyons Township earlier in the week and will play Addison Trail tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the football stadium and then will host Wheaton-Warrenville South at 9 a.m., Saturday.

I wanted to let people know about an opportunity to vote for an outstanding candidate for state representative, Jim Caffrey.

Jim is a Democrat, but he’s shown his independence from his party by calling for a new Speaker of the House and running a campaign without any financial support from the Democratic Party of Illinois. Jim will not vote for Mike Madigan.

Jim is part of a new wave of candidates who have never before run for office. I have had the opportunity to walk my neighborhood with Jim and introduce him to my neighbors, and I can say that Jim is enthusiastic about bringing a change to Springfield and is prepared to represent all of the constituents in our communities.

If you live in the 47th district, I urge you to support Jim Caffrey.

A year that will live in infamy: It’s time to act on climate

Those of us who understand the existential threat posed by climate change have been waiting for the “Pearl Harbor moment” that galvanizes people and politicians into taking action. 2018 is turning out to be a “Pearl Harbor year,” where a majority of Americans support taking action, and we’re ready for Congress to press forward.

We thought the wake-up call on climate change had come in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. The next opportunity came in 2012 when Superstorm Sandy roared up the East Coast with a storm surge that put much of New York City under water.

And last year’s back-to-back-toback storms -- Harvey, Irma and Maria -- left a swath of destruction from Houston to Puerto Rico, killing thousands and totaling some $300 billion in damage. But none of these were enough to overcome partisan squabbling and pushback from special interests.

Fortunately, Americans are connecting the dots between extreme weather disasters and climate change.

New polling from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication finds that 77 percent of U.S. adults support regulating carbon dioxide as a pollutant and 68 percent support taxing fossil fuel companies while equally reducing other taxes.

That polling should come as no surprise, given that 2018 is turning out to be a Pearl Harbor year, not just a moment:

Encouragement can be found in a growing movement to depoliticize the issue. There are now 86 members, half Republican and half Democrat, in the bipartisan House Climate Solutions Caucus. In late July, caucus co-leader Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) introduced the first Republican-sponsored bill to price carbon in nearly a decade -- a major crack in the dam holding back effective climate legislation.

My hope is that climate change can become a bridge issue rather than the wedge issue it’s been.

Throughout our history, Americans have set aside differences and come together in times of crisis. We can and must do that now with climate change. Let us hope this “year of infamy” will finally set the wheels in motion for Congress to enact meaningful solutions.

Resident urges registration for Town Hall for Our Lives

In regards to last week’s article in the Independent (York students host Town Hall meeting to discuss gun violence, Sept. 20, 2018 issue) on the Town Hall For Our Lives, a local teenager has taken on the monumental task of organizing the Oct. 13 event. This young lady was so moved by stories of Parkland students -- kids her age -- who have experienced gun violence firsthand, that she started attending meetings to get educated on the issue.

From there, she engaged marches and vigils; connected with victims in person and by phone; participated in a panel with experts promoting “gunsense” legislation and protection for mental health funding. While we pray for this violence to never enter our communities, it is this young lady’s mission to ensure we are all educated and motivated to eradicate gun violence from our daily narrative. Cullerton’s budget transparency measure is now law A new Illinois law sponsored

by State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) will mandate transparency and accuracy in the governor’s annual budget proposal.

The governor recently signed Cullerton’s House Bill 5814, which will force all future governors’ offices to record late interest payments as a separate line item in agency appropriations.

The law will paint a clearer picture of the state’s financial standing and slow the depletion of funding needed to provide vital services to Illinois residents.

“All future governors will be forced to present realistic appropriations budgets in the future thanks to this bill,” Cullerton said. “We need to make sure governors, regardless of political party, do not attempt to hide behind phony numbers.”

Currently, most late payment interest penalties accrue at a rate of 12 percent per month for bills unpaid after 90 days, while health care bills accumulate interest at a rate of 9 percent after 30 days.

The interest penalties are paid diately.

Theft was reported in the 400 block of N. York at around 5:42 p.m.

A reporting officer responded to the above location due to an individual who failed to pay for gas. The suspect had pumped gas and left the lot in an unknown direction without paying. The suspect was wearing a black Jordan jacket, a white Chicago Bulls shirt, and a black head cap.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of Walter Street at around 5:50 p.m. A victim told police he parked his vehicle at the Mill Theater parking lot at Elmhurst College.

The victim related at 4:30 p.m., the victim returned to his vehicle to find his black backpack had been taken.

The victim’s credit card was found to have been used in Northlake.

Sept. 17 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of N. York at around 11:05 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown male suspect wearing a white long sleeved jacket with a yellow strip on the sleeve enter his parked, unlocked vehicle. The unknown suspect removed the victim’s lunch cooler.

Sept. 16 A complainant in the 300 block of S. Kenilworth told police at around 11:52 p.m. that her husband received a cashier’s check in response to an

ad for employment to be a secret shopper. He was instructed to cash the check and wait 24 hours for it to clear. He was then instructed to purchase I-Tunes gift cards and send the suspect the numbers on the back.

Sept. 14 Attempted retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 9 p.m. A complainant told police that while stocking the beer coolers, he observed a black male and black female in the baby formula aisle. The suspects were placing several cans of baby formula in a gray and orange back pack. The complainant approached the suspects and told them to hand over the bag and that the police had been called.

The suspects left the bag and fled the store.

Sept. 9 A victim in the 100 block of E. North End told police at around 8:30 p.m. that he lost his cell phone and used an application to find it. The application showed the phone in Franklin Park. An officer responded to the area in an attempt to locate the phone and was met with no results.

Sept. 8 Forgery was reported in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 8:40 a.m. A victim told police that a suspect attempted to pay for merchandise with a suspected counterfeit bill.

Officers responded to the scene. The

suspect was detained and transported to the police station. The suspect was released without charges. United States Secret Service was notified and will investigate the complaint.

Theft was reported in the 1200 block of S. York at around 8:46 p.m.

A victim told police that a suspect had stolen cash from her bank account over the past several months.

An investigation is pending.

Theft was reported at a restaurant in the 200 block of N. York at around 10:23 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect described as a black male placed an order paying with a $100 bill. The male then allegedly distracted the cashier, taking the $100 bill back along with getting $91.45 back in change.

Sept. 7 Theft by deception was reported in the 200 block of N. Addison at around 2:43 p.m. A victim told police he was contacted by an unknown male suspect, stating his grandson was involved in a minor accident and needed cash to be released from custody. The unknown suspect instructed the victim to purchase two Walmart Gift cards and two Home Depot Gift Cards. The victim only purchased the Walmart gift cards and provided the unknown suspect with the card numbers. The victim’s wife grew suspicious and contacted their grandson who advised he was fine.

Sept. 2 Police said an agent for the victim’s company told police at around 10:03 a.m. an employee stole merchandise.

June 18 A victim in the 800 block of N. York told police at around 4:04 p.m. that a suspect filled out a credit application at a car dealership to purchase a new car and trade in her old vehicle.

After providing an Illinois driver’s license and insurance card, the suspect was given the new vehicle, a white 2017 Nissan Altima. The information given by the suspect was later found to be fraudulent and the victim has been unable to get in contact with the suspect. The vehicle has been entered into LEADS as stolen.

Warrant arrest

Sept. 17 Police said Jesse Rivera, 47, of Elmhurst, was found to be wanted out of the Cook County Sheriff’s office in the 400 block of N. Ridgeland at around 8:20 p.m.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 3:07 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect forced entry to his locked work truck and removed multiple tools. The victim did not know where or when the incident occurred, but reported it could have happened while he was completing a job in either Carol Stream or Wheaton.

Attempted retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 5:08 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect attempted to steal a bottle of vodka.

When loss prevention confronted the suspect, he reportedly rammed a shopping cart at the loss prevention employee and fled the store in a teal Pontiac Grand Prix, unknown direction of travel.

Theft of lost property was reported in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 10:28 p.m. A victim told police that he lost his gold iPhone 6S Plus in one of the ball pits and was able to track it to the west parking lot. The phone pinged a location between two vehicles. The vehicle owners consented to a search of their cars and the search was met with no results.

Heritage Day coming to One-Room Schoolhouse, Fischer Farm All are invited to join in a festive community-wide celebration of the fall season and local history on Saturday, Oct. 13 for Heritage Day at the Churchville One-Room Schoolhouse and at Fischer Farm in Bensenville.

This special event is co-presented by the Bensenville Park District and the Elmhurst History Museum. The Churchville Schoolhouse is listed as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

The two neighboring sites are rich in history and located near the corner

of Grand Avenue and Church Road.

A full slate of family-friendly activities are scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Churchville Schoolhouse, 3N784 Church Road, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Fischer Farm, 16W680 Grand Ave. Admission is free at both locations.

All activities are free at Churchville Schoolhouse, and a $6 wristband is available at the Fischer Farm for select kids’ activities. A tractor-pulled hay wagon will be available to transport visitors between each site.

The benefit will serve to support the creation of a vibrant theater complex in the western suburbs to provide a venue for arts and entertainment in Elmhurst and its surrounding communities.
