CBE dedicates hospital’s iconic cupola in Whistler Garden FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

It was a year ago on Sept. 27, 2018, when a group of citizens gathered in the prairie space behind the main branch of Community Bank of Elmhurst on Butterfield Road to dedicate the Darrell Whistler Memorial Prairie Garden. Whistler served not only on the bank’s Board of Directors but also on the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital’s Board of Governors and as Chair of the City’s Zoning & Planning Commission (ZPC).

Whistler passed away on July 14, 2017 at the age of 83. After his death, then-Board Chairman Bill Gooch announced that the Board of Directors had elected to name Darrell Director Emeritus, which he shall remain in perpetuity.

On Thursday, Sept. 19, Community Bank of Elmhurst once again invited the community to the site for another dedication ceremony with Whistler in mind.

The cupola, that sat high atop the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital building located on Berteau for almost a century, was salvaged by a group of residents who saved it from the wrecking ball and vowed to find it a home in the community. After several attempts, including a fruitless endeavor to have it placed at the new hospital campus, Community Bank of Elmhurst agreed to have the restored structure installed on the grounds of the Darrell Whistler Memorial Prairie Garden as a tribute to Whistler’s dedication to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and as recognition to the icons of Elmhurst, which both Whistler and the cupola clearly are.

In keeping with the theme of icons of the community, Community Bank of Elmhurst offered a nod to Lee A. Daniels and Thomas D. Marcucci, two icons of Elmhurst who spear-

headed the effort to save and find a site for the cupola. Daniels was a long-time State Representative who served as House Minority Leader as well as Speaker of the Illinois House. Marcucci was Elmhurst’s longest-serving mayor, completing four terms over a period of 16 years.

Both spoke at the ceremony.

“This icon stands for the history of Elmhurst,” Daniels said in his remarks. “It came about because of Elmhurst’s respect for its history.”

Marcucci began his comments noting how much he had learned about zoning from Whistler when he

first took office as mayor.

“Darrell Whistler was a full spectrum contributor in our community,” he said, “measured not in years, but in decades.”

Also speaking at the ceremony was George F. Hammersmith Jr., Chairman of the Board of Commu-

nity Bank of Elmhurst, who was introduced by CBE President Richard Reichert. The program also included Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry president & CEO John R. Quigley, who led the Pledge of Allegiance and organized the ribbon-cutting, which followed the program.

Student accused of threatening York High School

Last week, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth said that a male York High School student had been accused of posting a threatening Snapchat message directed at the school.

The juvenile, who is an Elmhurst resident, appeared at a detention hearing, where Judge Robert Anderson ordered that he be placed on home detention. He has been charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct, a Class 4 Felony. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 23.

According to the State’s Attorney’s report, it is alleged that on Monday, Sept.

16, the juvenile, who is 15 years old and therefore, not named, posted a video message on Snapchat in which he reportedly threatened the school. The video shows the juvenile allegedly holding what appears to be a rifle, later determined to be an air-soft rifle, while making threatening remarks against the school. The following day, DuPage County authorities became aware of the post and began an investigation, which led to the juvenile. Officials went to York High School and took the juvenile into custody without incident.

“The safety and well-being of our children and their teachers remains a top priority of my administration,” Berlin said. “Any threat, or even the perception of a threat of violence directed at a school will immediately be investigated and, if found credible, charged accordingly.

“I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their quick response and apprehension of the suspect in this case.”

Police warn community threats are serious Chief Michael Ruth released a communiqué announcing the incident, reminding the community that Internet threats are taken very seriously.

“Think before you post,” Ruth said. “On Tuesday, Sept. 17, [we] were alerted to a school related Internet threat. A York High School student was pictured with an Airsoft gun, referencing school show-and-tell.

“Detectives apprehended the teen, met with the teen’s father, and are working with school officials for further action.”

Based on the investigation, Ruth said it is believed that this was an isolated incident and that the teen poses no credible threat to others. The post has since been removed from Snapchat.

“Elmhurst police would like to remind students and parents that these threats are taken seriously by the police and school officials,” Ruth said. “The consequences for these actions are enforced and students should be mindful of what they post.”

District 205, York High School release statement Shortly after, Dr. David Moyer, Superintendent of District 205, issued a memo to parents, staff and other stakeholders.

“Based on the investigation, police believe that this was an isolated incident and the teen poses no credible threat to others,” Moyer said. “The post has been removed and did not directly identify York High School. The educational environment of the high school was not interrupted.

“District 205 and York High School in no way condones this type of behavior. Any threats to student safety, including pranks, will be handled immediately. We are working diligently with law enforcement to ensure that the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. Social media threats are taken seriously. Please think before you post.”

Members of the public are reminded that this release contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

A sparkling gem falls from Elmhurst’s crown City Clerk Patty Spencer loses cancer fight; services Wednesday, Thursday

Patricia Jo “Patty” Spencer, nee Armato, succumbed to metastatic breast cancer after a valiant fight that lasted 10 years on Sept. 20.

Patty had been preceded to heaven by her parents, Sam and Marie Armato, and by a sister, Anna Yonker.

Patty is survived by Byron Spencer, her husband of 38 years; by a stepdaughter Amy (Jonathan) Brumley; by her grandchildren Eleanor, Theodore and Clara Brumley; by her twin brother Carl (Theresa) Armato; sister-in-law Angela (Steve) Kidd; nephews Frank (Nikki) Armato and Andrew Kidd; nieces Carla Armato and Jackie (Jason) Hanson, a great-nephew Jack Hanson and great-nieces Anna and Ava Armato.

Visitation will be held at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26.

About Patty’s life Patty was integrally involved in community service with her beloved City of Elmhurst. At the time of her death, she was serving her fourth term as the elected City Clerk. She served Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in various volunteer capacities culminating as Chairman of the Guild and a term on the Board of Trustees, while the current facility was in the planning stages. She also served with the Elmhurst Art Museum and Garden Club among many other organizations.

One of the people involved in many volunteer endeavors with Patty was Marisa Mancini.

“I met Patty 18 years ago when I joined the Board of the Elmhurst Hospital Guild,” she said.

“Elmhurst was Patty’s passion, and she devoted herself tirelessly Patty Spencer to its betterment — undeterred by any obstacle. In brainstorming fundraising ideas for the Guild, it was Patty who created Chef Fest, the Guild‘s most successful fundraiser to date.

“Remarkably positive, disarmingly charming, quick-witted, and marvelously intelligent, Patty was my mentor, my inspiration, and my dear friend. I will miss her always.”

In May of 2017 at the City Council meeting, Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley issued a Proclamation designating May 7-13, 2017, as “Municipal Clerks Week,” which noted that, “the City Clerk serves as the professional link between the citizens, the local governing bodies and agencies of government at other levels.”

At that time, the Mayor extended appreciation to Spencer along with Deputy City Clerk Ellen Cyprian noting they were “continually striving to improve the administration of their duties.”

Patty Spencer has served as Elmhurst’s City Clerk since 2005, when she was first elected into office; she began her fourth term on May 1, 2017. As City Clerk, Patty bore many responsibilities including as keeper of the City seal, official keeper of the City’s records, and as Secretary to the City Council. Though she does not get a vote on items before the Council, Clerk Spen-

cer believed in the mantra, “Clerks Make It Work,” and took her role as a direct line between residents and government very seriously.

Her duties were many since the Office of the City Clerk oversees senior transportation programs, voter registration, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and a large variety of permits. In her role as Clerk, Spencer also served as the local election official and the Open Meetings Act (OMA) officer for the City, ensuring that all required staff, elected officials, and volunteer Commissioners complete the state-mandated training.

Along with her husband Byron, Patty was an Elmhurst resident for 35 years. Patty was involved as a volunteer and Board member for various organizations including Kiwanis Club, Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst College & Community Committee, the Elmhurst Hospital Guild, the Elmhurst Garden Club and was a staunch supporter of community events.

A proud cancer survivor, Patty advocated for cancer awareness in the community through the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and Edward-Elmhurst’s Cancer outreach programs. One year, her ACS Relay for Life team was called “Patty’s Peeps,” using marshmallow ‘Peeps’ as the theme.

Mayors offer high praises Patty served alongside three mayors and all had nothing but glowing things to say about her in her role as City Clerk as well as the dear person she was. Former Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci had nothing but praise for Patty’s unrelenting contributions to the City of Elmhurst and its residents.

“Patty Spencer came to public service out of a true sense of trying to help her community,” he said. “She had no political agenda, no axe to grind, she just wanted to do a good job for everybody. She and [her husband] Byron have both been building on that, having a decades-long record of serving our community.”

Former Mayor Pete DiCianni had similar sentiments about Spencer.

“Patty Spencer was the most dedicated clerk I’ve ever served with,” he said. “She was a true blue lover of Elmhurst and even though she battled cancer multiple times, she always had a smile on her face that would light up the room. I will miss our Clerk who I often referred to as Queen, as that was a more fitting title for our Queen of Elmhurst! I will miss you Patty and will always be one of your ‘Peeps.’”

Mayor Steve Morley offered his thoughts as well.

“I was my honor to serve with Patty Spencer for over 12 years and during that time, we became friends,” he said. “She was dedicated to her job and to her community.

Patty suffered no fools – she was direct, opinionated and committed.

She was an asset to the City of Elmhurst and will truly be missed.”

County’s quarry tours draw over 500 visitors

The DuPage County Stormwater Management opened the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility on Saturday, Sept. 21 to a sold-out crowd of more than 500 people who registered to get a rare, inside look at this DuPage County landmark.

Attendees learned how the County uses the Quarry to manage floodwater, along with its history in the community. Stormwater Management Chairman Jim Zay discussed its importance to DuPage County.

“The Elmhurst Quarry has a long and storied history throughout the region,” said Zay. “The limestone quarried there provided the base for countless buildings and roads throughout the Chicagoland area.

Today, it serves as a vital infrastructure, protecting thousands of people, homes and businesses from Salt Creek flooding.”

The Quarry was founded in 1883, only a year after Elmhurst was incorporated. Crews quarried and mined for limestone at the site for more than 100 years until it was converted into a landfill for construction debris.

Following massive flooding in the area in 1987 and a subsequent study of the surrounding watershed, the County purchased the Quarry in 1992 to use for flood storage. It was converted into a flood control facility that began functioning in 1996.

ECPA closes on property purchase Performing Arts Centre to be built on First Street across from Metra station

According to a release received by the Independent on Sunday, Sept. 22, the Elmhurst-First LLC purchased a property on behalf of the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA), furthering plans to establish a performing arts center in downtown Elmhurst. The transaction was completed on Thursday, Sept. 19.

According to Board member Laura Michaud, the property is located at 109-119 First St., directly across from the Elmhurst Metra station, and is considered a strategic location due to its centrality

within the downtown area, as well as its accessibility and visibility from public transportation. Its central downtown location is further expected to bring a positive boost to the local economy, especially restaurants, bars and other businesses, as projected in the Feasibility and Economic Impact Study conducted jointly between ECPA and the City of Elmhurst during the early planning stages of the project.

Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley is especially pleased.

“I’ve been saying this all along, and now it’s even more true - a performing arts center in Elmhurst will be one of the crown jewels of this

city,” he said. “I am personally excited about the potential that ECPA has in store for us.”

The effort to understand the viability of a downtown performing arts center began in 2016 when a group of professionals with a common vision developed an interest survey and business plan. They brought experience in theater management, commercial real estate, performing arts and business to the newly-formed Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts or ECPA, an Illinois not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

There is a local business that offers a special service to cancer patients, which is offering a giveaway contest to help those in need.

According to owner and president Kimberly Johnson, Chrysalis Custom Hair is a wig salon that creates custom made wigs for all women, but especially focuses on those who are going through cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, when

patients often lose their hair.

Because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Johnson is soon accepting entries into her 5th Annual Wig Giveaway event, which is a chance for cancer patients to receive a donated, washed and refurbished wig.

The purpose of the Chrysalis Custom Hair Wig Giveaway is to redistribute donated wigs to women experiencing medical hair loss in need of a wig, according to Johnson.

One of the members of the Elmhurst-First LLC is local business owner Willis G. Johnson, who is happy to see the ECPA project moving forward.

“We are pleased to be a part of the advancement of the ECPA project for Elmhurst and the surrounding suburbs,” he said. “This investment in our community will help ensure we cultivate local talent and will add a new cultural component to Elmhurst’s vibrant arts and entertainment offerings.”

Willis and his wife Shirley own Elmhurst’s York Theater and Tivoli Enterprises Inc./Classic Cinemas, which includes the historic Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove.

The next important phase involves design, construction planning and a capital campaign. The capital campaign will target fundraising through large donors including opportunities for naming rights, grants and individual donations.

The First Street building will retain its current retail and residential space for the next four to five years during the planning and capital campaign.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault, battery

Sept. 18 Cinque Grant, 29, of Bensenville, was charged with battery in the 100 block of W. First at around 4:56 a.m. Officers made contact with Grant who was sleeping inside of the Larch parking deck. An officer woke Grant, who reportedly pushed the officer’s hand.

Sept. 12 Emil Amerei, 46, of Chicago, was charged with battery in the 100 block of E. First at around 7:19 p.m. According to police, a victim stated that he provoked Amerei, who punched the victim in the face. The reporting officer observed a contusion on the victim’s left cheek.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage to property

Sept. 18 A complainant at Elmhurst Hospital told police at around 4:05 p.m. that the suspect was admitted to the hospital and reportedly damaged medical equipment in his room.

Charges for criminal damage to property and criminal defacement are pending.

Sept. 17 Stephen McConnell, 31, of Rosiclare, Ill., was charged with criminal damage to property and obstructing identification in the 200 block of N. Highland at around 10:24 p.m. Police said officers responded for a criminal damage in progress where a male was reportedly throwing rocks at vehicles.

McConnell was located and reportedly had broken the victim’s bedroom window with a rock. Police said McConnell also gave the reporting officer a false name.

Sept. 13 Donald Bigham, 62, of Franklin Park, was charged with criminal defacement of property in the 900 block of S. York at around 5:42 p.m. Police said that subsequent to the report of a subject consuming alcohol in public, officers located Bigham, who was in possession of a large can of beer, which was about one-quarter full. According to police, Bigham was uncooperative during the booking process and was placed in a cell.

Sept. 12 Police said a complainant in the 200 block of N. Oaklawn found the rear window of the victim’s home had been broken at around 7:55 p.m. According to police, officers located Eric Eichinger, 37, of Elmhurst, who was allegedly intoxicated and passed out in a neighboring yard. Eichinger was charged with criminal damage to property, harassment through electronic communications and disorderly conduct.

Aug. 8 A victim in the 600 block of S. Mitchell told police at around 4 p.m. that the suspect has been told to stay away from the residence. On the above date, the victim found the suspect inside of her home. The reporting officer made contact with the suspect who admitted to being at the residence and knew that she was not welcome there. The victim did not wish to sign complaints.

Sept. 17 Daryl Friend, 51, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication in the 100 block of N. York at around 10:55 p.m.

Sept. 19 A 39-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and unlawful restraint in the 600 block of S. York at around 2:17 a.m. Police said one of the suspect’s daughters states that she observed her father push her little sister down to the ground, restrain her in the bedroom and refuse to let her leave. The suspect admitted these actions, according to police.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Sept. 18 Gabriela L. Banda, 33, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, endangering the life of a child, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting a police officer and no insurance subsequent to an alleged hit-and-run accident near Cottage Hill and Arthur at around 7:06 p.m. Police said Banda was found to be intoxicated while transporting her child.

Banda allegedly pulled her arms away as the reporting officer attempted to place her into handcuffs.

Sept. 17 Zdzislaw Klosowski, 67, of Schiller Park, was charged with DUI and illegal stopping, standing or parking where prohibited near Oak and North at around 2:44 a.m.

Sept. 16 January Willars, 37, of Bensenville, was charged with aggravated DUI-drugs, possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Fremont and York at around 8:08 p.m. Police said Willars was found to be in possession of a crack pipe with heroin residue.

Sept. 15 Paul Irving, 48, of Hillside, was charged with DUI-drugs and improper lane usage subsequent to a motorist assist near St. Charles and Prospect at around 11:46 p.m.

Police said Irving was found to be DUI drugs and admitted to have taken prescription medications.

Santos T. Lopez-Carrillo, 31, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI and driving while license suspended subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 600 block of W. Grand at around 11:19 p.m.

Ernesto Plascencia, 29, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI and improper stopping on a roadway subsequent to a well-being check in the 300 block of Walnut at around 7:01 p.m.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/robbery

Sept. 14 Paul W. Gannon, 32, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Eggleston and Spring at around 1:25 a.m.

Sept. 17 A victim in the 600 block of N. York told police at around 9:17 p.m. that he parked his vehicle in the north parking lot a fitness center. When the victim returned, the vehicle was gone. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Broadview and recovered.

Forgery was reported in the 200 block of N. York at around 2:33 p.m. Police said a complainant was notified by a bank that a fraudulent $100 bill was submitted with the city’s deposit. The bank filed a report with the Secret Service.

Sept. 13 Joshua J. Dymacek, 32, of Woodridge, was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, injuring city property and no insurance subsequent to a traffic crash near Babcock and Garden at around 1:13 a.m.

Lakisha Honey, 27, of Oak Brook, was charged with DUI, two counts of endangering the life of a child and failure to secure a child in a seat belt subsequent to well-being check in the 500 block of E. Park at around 1:46 p.m. Police said the suspect’s car was found in the driveway with heavy damage to the front of the vehicle. Honey was located inside the house. Police said Honey had visible injuries and was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

Sept. 12 Police said witnesses observed Peter K. Connor, 20, of Elmhurst, commit several traffic violations, strike a chain-link fence, strike a parked car and leave the scene of the accident near Fairfield and Alexander at around 6:30 p.m. According to police, officers located Connor at his residence and he was found to be DUI-drugs. Police said Connor admitted to snorting heroin while driving. He was charged with DUI-drugs, failure to give information after striking an unattended motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving on the wrong side of the road and improper lane usage.

Harassment, threats

Sept. 15 A victim in the 300 block of S. Cottage Hill reported to the responding officer at around 10:46 p.m. that she was receiving threatening messages from two suspects.

Both parties were contacted and advised to stay away from the victim.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance

Sept. 18 Michael Micaletti, 65, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of a controlled substance in the 300 block of N. Ridgeland at around 6:48 p.m. Police said Micaletti was found to be in possession of cocaine.

Sept. 17 Jerrin L. Glass, 26, of Chicago, was issued citations for driving while license suspended, illegal transportation of open alcohol, possession of cannabis and tinted windows, while Jakari Glass, 22, of Chicago, was cited for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Michigan at around 5:58 p.m.

Sept. 12 Briana Gamez, 21, of Hillside, was issue citations for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Cedar at around 10:25 a.m.

Sept. 16 Theft was reported in the 200 block of W. Wrightwood at around 4:44 p.m. A victim told police that his prescription medication was taken from his pants pocket while working at the above location. The victim related there were approximately 50 pills in the bottle and stated he has never had another bottle lost or stolen.

Sept. 15 Forgery was reported in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer Drive at around 10:49 a.m. A complainant told police that while inventorying the cash drawers, he discovered five counterfeit $100 bills. The complainant reviewed camera footage and observed a suspect standing at the register paying, described as a black male wearing a baseball hat with a blue sweat suit with white stripes, along with white gym shoes. After the completion of the purchase, the unknown suspect exited the store in an unknown direction.

Aug. 30-Sept. 15 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of N. Oak between the above dates. A complainant told police that he received an envelope containing an Apple® Credit card for which he had not applied. Upon further investigation, the complainant learned the account had been fraudulently opened using his personal information.

Sept. 13 Identity theft was reported in the 700 block of Cedar at around 3 p.m. A victim told police that she received a phone call from an unknown suspect who identified himself as one of her credit card issuers. The victim provided the suspect with her credit card number as well as the last four digits of her Social Security number. The victim noticed a charge on her account as well as another account opened at Bank of America. The victim was provided information on how to protect one’s self against identity theft.

Attempted retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer at around 7:58 p.m. A complainant told police that that while stocking shelves, he heard the sound of plastic breaking. The complainant observed the suspect attempting to pry open a locked shelf that contained Crest White Strips. He confronted the suspect who then fled the store. There is no known loss of goods. The suspect was described as a white male, between 30 and 40 years old, with black hair (crew cut), around 5’5”, 200 pounds, with tattoos on the left arm and hand, wearing a bright orange T-shirt and gray sweatpants.

Rep. Mazzochi advocates property tax transparency, reform State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) is fighting to overhaul the property tax system to increase transparency and fairness, and avoid increases that cause families and seniors to flee Illinois.

Mazzochi said residents are fed up with tax bills that increase while their property values remain stagnant or decline.

“The current property tax and assessment appeals processes is ripe for abuse, because there is an army of property tax appeals lawyers in our state, including House Speaker Mike Madigan, who specialize in obtaining lower assessed values for paying clients,” she said. “This places an unfair and higher tax burden on everyone else.”

The largest property tax bill line item is K-12 education. Mazzochi stressed that property tax reform still must ensure local schools stay appropriately funded. She pointed out that schools in the 47th House District have seen their share of state funding plummet over the years, to be almost 90% funded by local taxpayers.

Mazzochi, who co-chairs the Property Tax Relief Task Force, explained that “ISBE admitted at a recent hearing that for every $100,000 of new income tax dollars Springfield takes from our district, we get a mere $100 back under the state’s school funding formula.

“Our district residents have been in-

credibly generous with their local tax dollars to fund our schools, but when our tax dollars sent to Springfield do not come back in any meaningful way, we deserve more local control.”

Mazzochi applauded local school boards’ efforts to attract top talent and provide teachers with the tools they need to maximize student success, but warned that they need relief from unfunded mandates and curriculum or program whims that Chicago politicians force on schools statewide.

“Many of these unfunded mandates are just not relevant to our district needs,” she said. “This drives up costs – including property taxes – to no measurable educational benefit.”

In making a plea for more local control, Mazzochi emphasized that the diverse nature of the state necessitates letting schools respond to each district’s unique challenges and student demographic profile.

“A one-size-fits-all educational blueprint can’t work statewide; and it doesn’t work for our property tax system either, given the diverse nature of our local resources and economies,” she said.

A future subcommittee meeting is tentatively scheduled on Thursday, Oct 3 at 1 p.m.

Pro bono attorneys needed to address ‘Justice Gap’ According to the report “The Justice Gap,” low-income Americans receive no or inadequate legal help for 86% of their non-criminal legal problems. These individuals include senior citizens, veterans, and those with disabilities. They may be experiencing housing problems or domestic violence, be trying to obtain disability benefits or immigration status after experiencing violence, or be a senior in need of advanced directives to avoid being defrauded.

Currently, there are not enough volunteer attorneys in Illinois to help them.

This shortage of pro bono attorneys not only affects the number of low-income or disadvantaged people served, but also the disposition of justice. Studies consistently show that the outcome of contested matters often turns on whether a person has an attorney.

The Pro Bono Network (PBN) has been working since 2011 to combat this shortage by expanding the pool

of attorneys available to represent those who cannot afford legal services. PBN recruits, trains, places, and supports lawyers who want to be of service but have limitations on their availability or resources.

These include attorneys who are on career breaks, have retired, or are solo practitioners. The attorneys can work from their home or at a number of locations throughout DuPage and Cook counties. Malpractice insurance is provided.

PBN invites interested DuPage County attorneys to learn more about our work, at an open house in Glen Ellyn on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Glen Ellyn Public Library. PBN also will be conducting trainings for specific DuPage projects later in October.

Hard or easy – thoughts on birth order

Birth order intrigues me. According to the theory, certain characteristics are associated with your place within a family – whether you are the oldest, middle or youngest child. We can’t choose this particular lot in life.

We are simply dealt our hand and we live it out.

There are positives and negatives to each family position. But one thing is clear. The oldest child has it the easiest.

The oldest child has a new car seat, new crib, new toys and brand new parents. These parents haven’t had the time or experience to develop bad habits like wiping the dropped pacifier on a semi clean T-shirt before returning it to baby’s mouth. New parents sanitize the pacifier every time it hits the floor.

In the best of circumstances, oldest children have the attention of two parents. Mom or dad (and sometimes both) jump up at 2 a.m. when baby produces the slightest of whimpers in their sleep.

Baby’s hands are washed and dried before mealtimes. Bath is an everyday occurrence. Naps happen on time all the time. The best developmental toys are purchased. Parents worry and fret about anything and everything.

They hover sometimes incessantly.

This can cause stress – for parents and baby.

geous and brave. They are the first to climb the big steps of the school bus – alone. When they mess up (and all kids do) it is a first for their parents and treated like it is the end of the world – or at least the end of a good day.

They have the responsibility of training in new parents and just when things are getting comfortable, another baby comes along and divides the parental attention the first-born has finally gotten used to.

Perhaps being the oldest child isn’t easy at all. Maybe it’s the hardest spot to own.

The logic is obvious then; the middle child has it the easiest.

The middle child does not have to experience the hovering and over-attentiveness of newbie parents. No one stresses over sanitizing everything – even and especially the pacifier. Daily activities are more streamlined. Seasoned parents realize they don’t need every baby gadget and gizmo available on Amazon. This actually makes life easier for everyone.

Mom and dad understand this baby

thing and have learned to trust their gut with the middle child. They have learned to work together and are more relaxed and baby picks up on this. Relaxation is a good thing – for both parents and baby.

The middle child has an older sibling to watch and learn from – physically, socially and emotionally. There are lots of interesting toys in the house because of said older sibling.

Then again, while interesting to watch, the new baby has to share parent time with their older sibling. And older siblings might express jealously on occasion. Parents might not notice because they are in the new state of experienced and relaxed parenting.

Pacifiers get misplaced and even lost.

This isn’t easy for baby.

Perhaps being the middle child isn’t the easiest at all. Perhaps it’s better described as hard.

So then, we are left with the one option; the youngest child has it the easiest.

Life for the youngest child is never boring. He has two or more siblings to entertain him day and night.

They’ve already paved the way and he has the easy job of following in their footsteps.

Parents are now outnumbered which makes them too tired to helicopter, much less restrict.

Obituary NICANOR ISLA GOMEZ, 83 Nicanor Isla Gomez, a longtime Elmhurst resident, passed away in his sleep on Sept. 8, in Fort Worth, Texas. Known as Nic to his friends and family, he was born to Antonio and Asuncion (Isla) Gomez on February 27, 1936 in Taal, in the Philippine Province of Batangas. Nic was the fourth of seven children, with two sisters and four brothers. He attended Mapúa Institute of Technology (now Mapúa University) in Manila, Philippines and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering.

After graduating, Nic moved to Toronto, where he met his wife, Lucita Somcio. Nic and Lucy were married in Chicago in 1970. They moved from Toronto to the Chicago area in 1972, before settling down in Elmhurst in 1976. Nic worked as an engineer and chemist in the Chicago area until his retirement in 1996, including nearly 18 years as a color chemist at Ferro Corporation. While living in Elmhurst, Nic developed a passion for golf, and played or watched golf whenever he could. He

also enjoyed watching old Western television shows, word puzzles, gardening, and spending as much time as he could with his grandsons.

Nic is survived by his daughter Lisa Gomez, son-in-law Eric Rogers, and grandsons, Robert and Zachary Rogers, of Fort Worth; his brother Pedro Gomez and sister-in-law, Gertrude Gomez, of Bolingbrook; his brother Rogelio Gomez, of Taal, Philippines; his sister Florencia Mandigma and brother-in-law, Reynaldo Mandigma, of Homestead, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Asuncion Gomez; his wife, Lucita Gomez, his brothers, Vincente Gomez and Edelberto Gomez, and his sister, Benilda Salonga.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, from 3 to 8 p.m., at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 South Spring Road, in Elmhurst. A funeral prayer service will be held at Ahlgrim Funeral Home on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 9:15 a.m., followed by a procession to Mary Queen of Heaven Church, 426 N. West Avenue in Elmhurst, where the Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Burial service will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S. Wolf Road in Hillside. Center for the Arts to present play about John Wilkes Booth The Addison Center for the Arts is hosting a performance of “The Lady, the Locket, and the Loves of John Wilkes Booth” on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 payable at the door. “The Lady, the Locket, and the Loves of John Wilkes Booth” is an original play written and performed

by Maria Boundas Bakalis.

Dr. Boundas Bakalis has woven a mysterious tale surrounding a woman’s locket, which contains two images set side-by-side: President Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth, his assassin. But, Booth was also a well-known and successful actor, son

of one of the greatest actors of the era, Junius Brutus Booth, and brother to the renowned actor, Edwin Booth.

The Booths of Maryland were revered by theatrical audiences throughout the country, but it was John who electrified the stage with his passionate performances and strikingly handsome face.

Wilkes Booth captured the hearts of many women. One of these women is the Lady of the Locket, a woman who wore a locket near her heart, a heart that loved both Lincoln and Booth.

Old Elmhurst: Personal recollections of a native: Part 11 A history provided by Dr. Frederick H. Bates

(Editor’s note: The Elmhurst Independent has been given the opportunity to bring stories of local history to its readers, courtesy of the Elmhurst History Museum.

These stories, taken from a publication called “Old Elmhurst,” were printed serially in the Elmhurst Press, during the winter of 1919 and 1920. The Independent will print Dr. Bates’ recollections periodically in its upcoming issues. For the most part, Dr. Bates’ language has been unchanged, but part of the story has been edited for length.)

Elmhurst was not unlike any other small village during the first years of its existence, and those of us who were born here had the usual associations of childhood. We who received our first impressions of life here naturally think it the dearest spot on earth,

and this feeling is shared to a great extent by those who, later in life, became centered here, where their children were born and reared. Most of us cannot get away from a sentimental feeling toward the “old home town.” Indeed, I feel sorry for anyone who does not share this most natural impulse.

There is something wrong in the individual who is lacking in this respect.

If I was writing on any other subject than “Old Elmhurst,” I would probably not succeed in holding the attention of my readers very long, but the recital of the events of half a century ago, dealing with familiar places, arrests the attention of most people.

There is a sentimental side to us all and the rehearsal of the things we used to do as children appeals to us as nothing else can.

Most of us like to go back in thought to our childhood or youth, when little things meant so much. Time and distance lend a peculiar meaning to the most commonplace events,

During the years immediately following the War of the Rebellion (American Civil War), Elmhurst grew very slowly. Money was scarce, taxes high, and the period of reconstruction most depressing. There was no demand for real estate, no building going on, and a general stagnation in business existed. Four long years of the greatest civil war in history had exhausted the resources of the nation.

Elmhurst College presents ‘The Color of Law: A Forgotten History’ Speaker to discuss ‘How Our Government Segregated America’

Racial segregation characterizes every metropolitan area in the United States and is responsible for some of our most serious social and economic problems: It corrupts our criminal justice system, exacerbates economic inequality, and produces large academic gaps between white and African American schoolchildren.

In his 2017 book The Color of Law, Richard Rothstein, a research associate at the Economic Policy Institute, argues that racial segregation in America is the byproduct of explicit government policies at the local, state and federal levels.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m., Rothstein will present “The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America,” this year’s Andrew K. Prinz Lecture for Political Awareness at Elmhurst College. It will take place in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Rothstein has spent years documenting evidence that government not only ignored discriminatory housing practices, but promoted them, with devastating results for generations of African Americans and the country as a whole. Ac-

claimed Harvard sociologist William Julius Wilson, author of The Truly Disadvantaged, wrote this about The Color of Law: “Based on careful analyses of multiple historical documents, Rothstein has presented what I consider to be the most forceful argument ever published on how federal, state and local governments gave rise to and reinforced neighborhood segregation.”

the old fashioned instrument, saying, “My God! -- Lincoln has been shot.” About a week later I saw President Lincoln lying in state at the old courthouse in Chicago, on the way to Springfield for interment.

There used to be a small enclosed plot at the east end of the old station, between the tracks. It was only the width of the depot, and extended a hundred feet eastward to the raised “milk platform,” where over 100 cans of milk were loaded on the baggage car of the 7:30 morning train, daily for Chicago. This little “park” was the first in Elmhurst (it was located a few feet south-west of the present baggage-room) and had a flagpole 60 feet high in the center. After Lincoln’s death, the large flag on this pole was kept at half mast for 30 days. The draping of the flag with long strips of black cambric by Charles Wade was a ceremony I shall never forget. With tears streaming down his cheeks, Wade sewed the cloth across the flag, and, bareheaded, the assembly watched him raise it.

More than 24,000 private sector Illinois workers have collectively stashed away more than $5 million in retirement savings since January as part of a new state program that increases access to retirement accounts for individuals whose employers do not already offer them.

Illinois Secure Choice was created by state law in 2015, requiring businesses with 25 employees or more to offer retirement savings plans or take part in the new program, which automatically enrolls workers in a state-created but independently managed retirement plan.

Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs said in a phone interview the program, which will roll out its final phase in November, is the state’s attempt at addressing a nationwide “retirement crisis.”

“Half of working adults have a mean retirement account of zero dollars,” Frerichs said. “It is in our best interest to make sure that people have saved their own money for their retirement. Not just so they can enjoy their golden years, … but also because it is bad for our economy when an entire generation of people reach retirement, and then dramatically decrease their spending because they’re living on a much lower fixed income.”

While the treasurer’s office and an appointed, unpaid board of advisors oversee the program, the money invested by Illinois workers goes straight to an account managed by

State Representative Deanne M. Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) recently sponsored two free property tax assessment forums that more than 200 people attended.

Attendees were given information detailing all of the exemptions available to lower tax bills; and guidance for both formal and informal assessment appeals.

“I hear repeated complaints from district residents that their property tax bill is too high, and want to know what they can do about that,” Mazzochi explained.

“These events were designed to get more information into taxpayers’ hands, and empower them with tools they can use to challenge any unfair or outdated assessments.”

Mazzochi noted that the state legislature historically has limited the time residents have to appeal a property tax assessment value to a mere 30 days.

“These notices will be coming out sometime within the next several weeks,” she said. “It was critical to educate residents on their rights as homeowners, so that they have as much advance notice as possible to prepare for an appeal.

“Property taxes in our district are considerably high; increases can be extremely stressful to those on fixed incomes; and no one should have to pay a penny more than required. The pro-

cess Illinois uses to create assessments and tax bills can be confusing and hard to decipher. This process supports an army of tax lawyers that swoop down on property owners after general assessment years; and residents need to know how to get fair treatment when it comes to their assessments.”

Many residents expressed their appreciation for the seminars, saying they now had a better understanding of the process.

In an open question and answer session, Mazzochi heard from residents frustrated with high property tax bills.

In Illinois, local government units first decide how much money they want, and then levy the tax amount on all property owners within their jurisdiction. If a resident’s home value decreases, a county, city, or school district is not obligated to reduce the total tax levy amount.

As co-chairman of the Property Tax Relief Task Force, Mazzochi encouraged district residents to contact her office for proposed reforms to make the system more fair and equitable so “we can keep our residents safe, prosperous, and able to stay in their homes and communities.”

That means employees opening the retirement accounts remain in complete control of their money and the state cannot use the funds for any other purpose.

For those saving their money, the only restrictions on the retirement accounts are those that apply to any other privately held retirement account.

save,” he said. “If you make people take some sort of action to save, people put it off. A person with a workplace retirement savings option is 15 times more likely to be saving for their retirement. It’s just simple human nature.”

Businesses with 100 employees or more that do not already offer retirement plans have been enrolling in the program since January. Come November, more than 10,000 employers—those employing between 25 and 99 full-time or part-time individuals—are expected to join the program as part of the final tier of its rollout.

Once a business is enrolled, employees who do not opt out of the program will be automatically enrolled in a Roth IRA savings account, which is accessible at saver.ilsecurechoice.com, a state-run website with information on the program.

A default rate of 5 percent of the employee’s income is withheld from each paycheck and deposited into the account, although the employee has the right to adjust or cancel that contribution at any time. They can also choose how aggressive the plan will be from a handful of options.

Employees enrolled in the program pay an annual fee of 0.75 percent of their invested money—a rate capped at that amount by state law.

Frerichs said that rate pays for the administration of the program and is on par with other private retirement plans which generally charge in the area of 1 percent.

There are no fees for employers to become part of the plan, and statue prohibits employer contributions to the plan.

Employers are required to register on ilsecurechoice.com, enter employee information and deduct and remit to the state the employee contributions from payroll. Frerichs said this process is similar to how employers handle income tax withholdings, although the investments that are collected are moved directly

into the Ascensus accounts.

While state law does provide for fines of $250 per employee for businesses that fail to comply with the law, the treasurer’s office said the goal is voluntary compliance and no fines have yet been levied.

Illinois, California and Oregon offer similar retirement savings plans, according to Chad Parks, who studies the U.S. retirement crisis, has worked with legislators on the issue and is the founder and CEO of California-based Ubiquity Retirement + Savings.

He said nationally, 68 percent of businesses with fewer than 100 employees do not offer retirement plans and the number is closer to 92 percent for companies with fewer than 20 employees.

“A lot of these different states have been hearing that message for a long time, and they start to look at these stats within their own borders,” he said. “And they say, ‘Hey, you know, if half of our population statistically doesn’t have access to retirement savings plan, we know that that’s going to become a big social challenge for ourselves, for our state government and our local county governments. … It’s going to put a strain on social services in the future.’”

Parks said he prefers a flat fee structure for retirement accounts rather than percentage of savings, and the Illinois threshold for businesses with at least 25 employees leaves a lot of workers without access to the program.

Still, he said Illinois’ action is part of a growing trend of states addressing the retirement crisis that could reach the national level.

“There’s always challenges and obstacles, but the one we’re trying to solve is just to get people access and get people in,” he said. “Once you’re in, then we can help you decide how much do you want to save. … We’re trying to solve the lifetime income problem.”

Between 2015 and 2018, opioid deaths in DuPage County almost doubled, from 51 reported deaths in 2015 to 98 deaths in 2018. In an effort to reverse this alarming trend, four DuPage County Republican State Representatives are partnering with DuPage Sheriff James Mendrick to fight the epidemic through distribution of a new, easyto-use drug disposal system.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs), along with State Representatives Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst), Grant Wehrli (R-Naperville) and Amy Grant (R-Wheaton), are helping Mendrick distribute disposable bags that deactivate the harmful ingredients in opioid pills or patches.

According to Mendrick, individuals with leftover opioids simply have to put them into the bag, add water, and shake. A drug deactivation system then breaks down the drugs to a point where they can safely be thrown in the trash. Mendrick said any leftover prescription of up to 45 pills or six fentanyl patches can be destroyed in the pouches. The disposal bags were made available to the sheriff’s office free of charge through a grant obtained by the Illinois Sheriffs Association.

“The majority of those who abuse opioids are finding the drugs in medicine cabinets,” said Leader Durkin. “These leftover pain pills represent the starting point of an opioid addition. Providing a free and safe way for people to dispose of their unused medications will go far in preventing opioid addictions and overdoses.”

Rob Reynolds, Director of Advocacy for Verde Technologies, which produces the drug deactivation bags, said the use of the pouches for opioid disposal will save lives.

“Once it’s in the pouch, it’s permanently unavailable for abuse or diversion,” he said. “Secondly, it makes it safe to throw in the household trash without having to worry about pharmaceutical waste entering the water system.”

“I thank Sheriff Mendrick for identifying a simple and safe way to dispose of harmful opioids ‎for district residents,” said Representative Mazzochi. “I am happy to support a program that reduces the risk of medication as an addiction vector.”

The free opioid deactivation bags are available at the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, at the legislators’ community outreach events, and at all four of the Representatives’ district offices. IC Catholic Prep football edges Bishop McNamara in Kankakee Defending state champs remain unbeaten

The latest in the IC Catholic Prep-Bishop McNamara football rivalry goes to IC Catholic Prep.

The Knights went down to Kankakee and walked away with a 31-27 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win.

The win pushed the three-time defending state-champion Knights to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in MSC Blue play.

The win is the latest in what has become a competitive high-stakes rivalry between the two programs. The Knights bested Bishop Mac for the state title last fall and hold a 5-3 edge in the series since the two teams first met back in the 2014 season. IC Catholic Prep has won the last five meetings.

In the Week 4 win, IC Catholic Prep quarterback Danny Cronin completed 13 of 26 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns.

Cronin also ran 21 times for 99 yards and scored a rushing touchdown. Kyle Franklin ran 15 times for 77 yards. IC Catholic Prep ran 37 times for 181 yards (4.9 yards per carry). Cronin had

a 22-yard run and Franklin had a 40yard run.

Chauncey Lee caught five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Vezza caught three balls for 98 yards and a touchdown, while Rashad Sheih had a 27-yard touchdown catch. Again, Cronin spread the wealth, connecting with seven receivers in the game.

Tommy Ryan added 40 yards in kick returns and 12 more in punt returns.

On defense, Kevin Cooke led the way with 13 tackles. Conor McCoy had 10 tackles, while Brendan Bigane had eight tackles. Deontae Oatman had seven tackles. Jaylen Frazier and Cooke each had a tackle for loss.

Cooke and Jayden Sutton, a freshman, each had a quarterback sack.

Justin Hall had two interceptions and Lee had one pick. Lee, Hall, Bigane, Jaydon Mims and AJ Howard each had a pass deflection.

Tommy Sloan kicked four extra points and hit a 26-yard field goal.

The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team was a 25-5, 25-17 Metro Suburban Conference crossover winner against Guerin Prep.

Jess Sobon had 10 kills and three digs for the Knights, who moved to 11-0 with the win. Claire Wagner had four kills, while Maddi Benson had 10 assists, one ace and four digs. Sophie Hurt had four assists, five aces and three digs. Kristen Brachmann had two kills, one block and two aces. Bella Leslie finished with four digs and two aces.

IC Catholic Prep boys soccer The IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team was 2-10-1 overall through its first 13 contests, but 2-1 in conference play.

Braeden Borninkhof was leading the team in scoring with six goals and six assists.

“The team is finally keeping its composure and working together as a whole,” coach Miguel Garcia said. “We have improved the most by staying competitive in every game.”

Garcia noted offensive progress has been made with the addition of Borninkhof in the attacking line.

The coach added the defense has had some hiccups, “but overall it has stayed strong.”

In addition to Borninkhof’s strong play, Garcia lauded the efforts of goalie Skander Tahri. “He is making big saves in goal when it counts,” he said. “I think we have found our starter—finally!”

TESC teams shine at recent contests Our Team Elmhurst Soccer Club U7 Junior Kickers, U8 Boys and Girls, U9 Boys and U10 Boys Select began their season with lots of goals and victories. The U7 and U8 teams play in Festivals throughout the season against the Chicago Edge, LaGrange Celtics, Chicago Kicks, and Lyons Township Soccer Club.

The U9 Boys Premier team (in forest green jerseys) finished the weekend with a victory and tie and had some great plays and goals throughout the weekend. They defeated RB FC 7-4 and tied the Lombard Firebirds 5-5 in an exciting game. The U10 Boys Select (in silver jerseys) team defeated Oak Brook Soccer Club 5-4 in a thriller game.

Timothy Christian boys golf team enjoying strong season

The Timothy Christian boys golf team is barreling into the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division tournament on a high note.

The Trojans were 6-2 overall in duals and 4-0 in MSC Red play through late last week. The Trojans were scheduled to wrap up conference play earlier this week against Aurora Christian at Oak Brook.

The Trojans have been led by the likes of Jason Grane, Alex Mitchell and Kyle Mahler. “They have had strong seasons for us,” said Timothy coach Jeff Vander Naald. “They have shown great leadership throughout the years for us. Our players are finding their rhythm and starting to put all the pieces together. We have great senior leadership from Jason Grane and Alex Mitchell combined with underclassmen who are new to the varsity team. It creates an environment where

everyone is pushing and challenging each other to get better.”

Vander Naald said an improved short game has helped the Trojans’ fortunes. “From the start of the season until now the varsity’s short game has improved significantly,” he said.

“We have dedicated a lot of time this season developing our chipping and putting. Many strokes can be saved around the greens and the players understand you can never have too good of a short game.”

Timothy also will play in a Class

1A regional at Maple Meadows. “The varsity kids have been playing that course all summer due to the benefits of their Youth on Course memberships, so we are eager for regionals,” said Vander Naald. “What’s impressed me the most with this group is its work ethic and how they push each other to get better. Their time in practice is productive and they also put in a lot of time outside practice developing their God-given talents.”

Only problem is those three teams were a combined 0-10 heading into Week 4.

York football now 3-1 after win against Lyons Township Dukes face Glenbard West Saturday in Glen Ellyn

The York football team is in a good place.

The Dukes downed Lyons Township 17-3 in a Week 4 West Suburban Conference Silver Division matchup. The win put York at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in WSC Silver play.

York is two wins shy of becoming playoff eligible. The Dukes last made the state playoffs in 2011.

The last time York started the season this well was a 3-1 beginning in the 2014 season. Unfortunately, that team fizzled and ended 4-5.

“It was a big win,” York coach Mike Fitzgerald said of the Lyons

triumph. “We needed it. We are certainly proud of the kids. The expectation now is to come out on top of these games and being consistent in our approach day in and day out. When you do that, that’s when good things happen.”

York got off to a strong start but forcing a turnover on Lyons’ first possession and scoring off that.

“We got off to a good start, which is something we have struggled with,” said Fitzgerald. “Scoring off that turnover got us some good momentum right off the bat.

We did a good job playing with that momentum. This is the first game I felt that we were in control of. We controlled the line of scrimmage

and we played well defensively.

Offensively, we moved the ball well. This was one of our better games so far.”

Fitzgerald was a fan of defensive line play in this game. “Our defensive line created a lot of pressure and caused some errant throws. We were able to get a couple interceptions,” he said. “We were relentless and were flying around. We also did a good job on defense of eliminating the big plays. That hurt us in the first few weeks where we would give up this gigantic play that would turn the momentum.

Our guys did a good job of keeping everything in front of them. We created takeaways and that really

helped us.”

Fitzgerald lauded the play of Chris Eckard, along with Brandon Walker and quarterback Max Assaad. “Chris played really well,” the coach said. “He was one of the guys up front getting pressure.

In fact, our whole defensive line played well. Brandon recovered that first fumble and that got us going. Max played really well at quarterback. He had a nice night. He was very efficient taking care of the ball and making great decisions.”

The fact York is 2-0 in WSC Silver play is not lost on Fitzgerald.

“Any time you win in this conference, it’s a big deal,” he said.

“There are great teams in the con-

ference. It’s great competition. You have to earn every one of them. It feels good to be right in the thick of things, but we have to get back to work and our guys will do that.”

Glenbard West comes into Saturday’s game unbeaten once again at 4-0. “Glenbard West is a very good football team,” Fitzgerald confirmed. “But we feel like we are getting better each week. That’s the key here. We want to improve every day and we feel like that’s happening. The guys are excited. They have worked extremely hard this off-season. I’m glad to see their hard work paying off. They also know there is a lot of hard work still to be done.”

The York boys cross-country team ran away with the recent Joliet Central invitational team title at Channahon Community Park.

The Dukes won the event with 22 points, well ahead of second-place Oswego (69 points).

Junior Colin Hill won the individual meet title with a 15:34.7 time for three miles. Junior Sam Ayers finished third for York at 15:54.2, while senior Will Yasdick was fifth at 16:08.1, sophomore Jackson Geiger was sixth at 16:08.2 and senior Sam Rodgers was seventh at 16:11.7.

York had a 37-second split between Hill and Rodgers, who was the team’s fifth finishing runner.

“Our focus from the beginning has been improvement,” York coach Charlie Kern said. “We are continuing to improve our men-

tal and physical strength. We are improving our trust in each other and having a lot of fun at the same time.”

York also defeated Glenbard West and Oak Park-River Forest in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division triangular. York won on all three levels.

Geiger won the sophomore race and established a new course record.

Kern noted the improvements don’t stop with Geiger. “We have had many athletes improve from last year to this year,” he said.

At Joliet, Colin Lewandowski improved 2:42 from last year, while Jeff Luka trimmed 10:26 off his time. Mustafa Valika has improved 11:07 since 2017.

In a season of impressive feats, the York boys golf team added another one to the list.

The Dukes recorded a recent 146149 West Suburban Conference Silver Division victory over seven-time defending state-champion Hinsdale Central at The Preserve at Oak Meadows.

Zach Sutter shot a 3-under-par 33 to lead the way for the Dukes. Josh LaBounty shot a 1-under 35, while sophomore Sam Wit shot 38 and senior Brad Lynch rounded out the scoring with a 40.

York shot 2-over-par as a team, “which is very strong on a tough course,” said York coach Jim Borel.

“Zach and Josh played as a twosome and were 4-under-partotal. They played great and carried the team. I also was proud of how our guys focused on playing good golf and were not intimidated by the strong record of the opponent. We are playing well and looking forward to the conference meet and the IHSA series.”

It was York’s third dual in a row going under 150 as a team and fourth of the season. York shot a season-low nine-hole round of 143 in a conference win on the road against Glenbard West. York also shot a 291 for 18 holes in winning the Batavia invite and shot 297 to win the Fenton invite.

Through late last week, York was averaging a 150.3 for nine holes.

Matt Buckley was leading the way with a 37.5 average for nine holes.

Sam Bartolone was at37.73, while LaBounty was averaging 38.0 for nine and Sutter was at 38.5.

With the Hinsdale Central win, York moved to 5-1 overall in duals and 4-1 in WSC Silver play. York lost to Lyons Township by four strokes earlier in the season.

York girls golf In recent action, the York girls’ golf team lost 151-165 to Wheaton St. Francis at Sugar Creek in Villa Park. Cassie Sika shot 40 to lead the Dukes. Lauren Keith and Audrey Matias each had 41s, while Haley Blattner had a 43.

defeated St. Francis 181-205. Jenna Hughes was the medalist with a 41. Elise Moran shot 44, while Julia Filosa and Cookie Klinger each had 48s.

York defeated Downers Grove South 182-187 in a West Suburban Conference contest at Oak Brook.

Blattner was the meet medalist with a 43. Matias shot 44, while Sika had a 47. Keith and Nora Foley each shot 48.

The JV match was held at Sugar Creek with York scoring a 165-217 WSC win. Filosa was the medalist with a 39. Emily Thomas shot 40.

Hughes finished with a42 and Macy Fries shot 44.

Leyden, Proviso West and Addison Trail have a combined 1-11 mark after four weeks.

In terms of strength of schedule, Glenbard West has faced four teams with a combined 3-13 mark, while York’s first four opponents have a combined 8-8 mark (Downers Grove North is 3-1 with its only loss to York).

“We have played some stretches of really good soccer over the last two weeks,” Zielke said.

Zielke liked the results of the team’s recent annual trip to Peoria where it defeated Peoria Christian 7-0 and tied a strong Dunlap team at 3-3. “Our team bonded well and came together over our recent trip,” he said. “We are controlling large parts of games and beginning to dictate the pace and tempo.

This group is playing with a lot of confidence at the moment.”

Timothy has used a new formation thus far this season. “They are gaining a better understanding of our shape, which has helped as we progress through the first few weeks,” Zielke said. “We are understanding who we Senior Jake Hansmann sets are as a group and what we can accomplish this season.” up a play for the Dukes.

Zielke has been thrilled with the team’s play on defense. “A big question mark coming into the season was how quickly our back line would gel together with only one starting defend-

er returning,” he said. “Mike Vogt has done a nice job of leading the group of Ethan Roemmich (senior), Josh Bode (junior), Josh Kiefer (junior) and Jason Westra (junior). They have been a big part of our four shutouts (in eight games).”

Zach Orange has logged the bulk of the minutes in goal with Westra getting time there as well. “Zach is gaining more confidence in the goal with each game,” Zielke said.

Stremler, Hooker and Wise have starred in a variety of roles for the Trojans. “This trio of seniors has done a great job of leading this group on and off the field,” said Zielke. “Jonathan is a workhorse and demands the attention of multiple defenders. Josh is a very intelligent player and does a very good job of controlling our midfield. Carson has good speed and has found himself in good spots at the right time. This is a tough group to defend. They combine speed, strength and are good in the air.

These three have opened up several opportunities for other guys.”

Timothy is in the midst of a busy stretch of games on the schedule. “We are entering a tough stretch here with seven games over the next 12 days,” Zielke said earlier last week. “Our bench has given us some great minutes over the first eight games and it will play a big part in our success over the next two weeks.”

Overall, Zielke likes what he has seen so far. “I am pleased with the growth thus far,” he said. “We are learning a little more about ourselves each match and, more importantly, learning how to win close matches. We still have a ways to go to be playing our best soccer, but our fitness levels and mental toughness have helped us close out matches.”

Timothy allowed only one second-half goal through its first eight games. “There is great energy with this group and they are hungry for success,” Zielke said.

Lee continues to excel for Timothy Christian girls tennis team

The Timothy Christian girls tennis team has enjoyed a host of recent Dukes senior goalkeeper successes.

Timothy, which was 2-3 in its first five duals, took fifth at the District 88 invite, but was only five points from winning the title as the smallest school in the event. Coach Keith Mills noted the Trojans were without their second-best player. “It was our best invite result so far,” he said.

Lee was 13-1 in her first 14 matches at No. 1 singles, while Yelenosky was 7-4 through 11 matches playing both singles and doubles.

Lee won the District 88 No. 1 singles title with a win against West Chicago, while Sarah Carstensen and Yelenosky cruised to a No. 1 doubles win against Montini.

“Our singles play has been strong so far,” said Mills.

Yelenosky has contributed right away as a freshman. “Alexa as a

freshman has been great, playing some singles and doubles,” Mills said. “Her on-court calmness has been a big plus to her game and should help her improve from week to week and into future years.”

Mills added the Trojans are starting to figure out strategy better and how to react to various match situations. The doubles lineup also is coming into clearer focus. “Doubles play needs to improve for us to finish the second half strong as we did last year,” he said. “We are starting to figure out partners after much juggling due to injuries and illness.”

Mills has seen progress on a number of fronts thus far. “We have had some tough, close losses and there have been no negative attitudes,” he said. “They are generally staying positive. Cassandra Lee has been solid again this year and is getting better. She has become the team leader and pushes the others. Our doubles play has been a struggle early, but I feel we are starting to become more aggressive and adjusting strategy.”

Timothy was scheduled to face Trinity, IC Catholic Prep and Rosary this week.

Dukes win top two singles matches against Hinsdale Central

It was a three-peat for the York girls tennis team.

The Dukes recently won the eightteam Buffalo Grove invitational title for a third year in a row. York made it to the championship match in six of the seven flights and won three titles. The Dukes were 5-1 in super-tiebreakers.

York finished with 46 points, three ahead of second-place Libertyville.

“The girls played very consistent tennis,” said York coach Tres Heimann. “They were really able to dig in a lot during a lot of the close matches and found a way to prevail.”

Gianna Nikoleit took second in the No. 1 singles flight. She opened

with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Buffalo Grove and then won 6-1, 4-6, (10-4) against Warren. Nikoleit lost 6-3, 6-2 to Libertyville in the championship match.

Keira Polach took second in the No. 2 singles flight. She won her first match 6-0, 6-1 against Maine South and won 6-2, 6-4 against Warren in the semifinals. Poloach lost 6-2, 6-0 to Libertyville in the title finale.

Morgan Burnham won the No. 3 singles flight. She defeated Hersey 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and then downed Libertyville 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals before recording a 6-0, 6-0 win against Lake Zurich in the championship match.

In the doubles division, the team of Cate Duhig and Elle Duhig was

fourth at the No. 1 flight. They won 6-3, 6-0 against Buffalo Grove, but lost 4-6, 6-4, (15-13) to Cary-Grove and 2-6, 6-2, (11-9) to Libertyville.

Isabel Brown and Rachel Kayman took second at the No. 2 flight. They won 6-3, 6-4 against Cary-Grove and 6-4, 7-6 (4) against Warren in the semifinals. Brown and Kayman lost 6-2, 6-2 to Libertyville in the finals.

In the No. 3 doubles flight, Micki and Sasha Neidigh won the title.

They were 7-5, 5-7, (10-5) winners against Libertyville and 6-1, 6-1 winners against Maine South in the semifinals. The Neidighs defeated Cary-Grove 6-0, 6-3 for the title.

Gabby Felder and Zoe Burkhardt won the No. 4 doubles title. They opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win against

Maine South and scored a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hersey in the semifinals before defeating Libertyville 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

The news also was good in York’s recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division match against annual state power Hinsdale Central. York lost the match 5-2, but, in a significant development, won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles contests.

“These are two huge wins in a dual meet against Hinsdale Central,” Heimann noted.

Melissa Cartis was a 7-5, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles for York. She’s now 2-0 against Hinsdale Central this season. “Melissa showed fantastic composure throughout the match,” Heimann said. “She was on an even keel the entire match and played very consistent tennis.”

Cartis moved to 15-3 overall at No. 1 singles with the win.

Nikoleit was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles. “Gianna played with a lot of confidence and showed great focus throughout her match,” said Heimann.

Nikoleit moved to 14-4 with the win.

“Both Melissa and Gianna are playing at a very high level right now,” said Heimann. “They are both very motivated players and are hungry to continue to compete and improve throughout the season.”

York was 14-5 overall and 1-2 in WSC Silver action after the Hinsdale Central contest.

Burkhardt was leading the team in wins with a 16-4 mark through last week. Nikoleit and Burnham were 14-4, while Micki Neidigh was 14-5.

Kayman was 13-6, while Polach was 13-7. Aleksina Jovic and Elle Duhig were 12-6, while Brown was 12-7.

Cate Duhig was 10-5.

Legislation to cover diagnostic mammograms Insurance companies will be required to cover mammograms for patients who have discovered breast tissue abnormalities under a measure backed by state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, which was recently signed into law.

“A woman who has discovered that she could have breast cancer should be able to see her doctor and get a proper diagnosis without worrying about whether their insurance will cover the screening,” said Conroy.

“It’s long past time to close the loophole that has allowed insurance companies to skirt their legal obligations.”

Under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans are mandated to cover preventative services for women without a co-pay.

panies have refused to share the cost for necessary follow-up screenings after abnormalities are discovered. Under this new law, diagnostic mammograms occurring in between the first screening and an official diagnosis will be considered preventative care and therefore require coverage by insurance companies.

“When a woman and her doctor discover that something is not right, waiting just a couple of months for a mammogram can be the difference between life and death,” said Conroy. “The unanimous decision in both the House and Senate to hold insurance companies accountable for covering the cost of diagnostic mammograms is a critical step forward for women across Illinois.”

Construction has begun on a new clubhouse and visitor center at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s The Preserve at Oak Meadows in Addison. A groundbreaking ceremony was held recently to mark the occasion.

“We took 10 years because we rebuilt this course,” said Forest Preserve District President Daniel Hebreard. “It now holds 20 million gallons more flood capacity for the community, and now it does not flood out when you’re coming to play 18 holes, and we increased our beautiful natural resources to truly make this a fantastic golf preserve.”

Forest Preserve District Commissioner Marsha Murphy, District 1, thanked local officials for supporting the project.

“I didn’t think I’d ever stand before you on this wonderful day,” Murphy said. “It’s going to be an absolutely spectacular building when it’s finished, and it’s going to complement our golf preserve.”

DuPage Forest Preserve District commissioners hired Pepper Construction as project construction manager to deliver the project at a price not to exceed $12.6 million.

The project is expected to be done by September 2020.

The one-story clubhouse will feature an 18,018-square-foot building with a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating area, a multipurpose room with an outdoor terrace, pro shop, kitchen and office space.

The clubhouse design is a reinterpretation of midcentury modern architecture with angled flat roofs, transition spaces to blend the inside and outside, and large expanses of windows to feature views of the course. It was designed by Daniel Wohlfeil Design Ltd. of Elmhurst.

Environmentally friendly features of the building include a green roof, bird-safe glass, sustainably sourced wood, LED lighting systems, and compliance with ComEd’s energy

efficiency program.

Commissioners also approved installing a solar power system on the cart storage building at The Preserve at Oak Meadows. The solar arrays will produce enough electricity to fully power the facility’s 75 golf carts, making The Preserve the first golf course in the U.S. with a fully solar-powered golf car fleet.

History of the property The Forest Preserve District acquired the former Elmhurst Country Club in 1985, and the original 50,000-square-foot clubhouse at this location was destroyed by fire in 2009. After the fire, there was a public call to immediately replace the clubhouse, but Forest Preserve District Executive Director Ed Stevenson first wanted to address chronic flooding problems, improve environmental conditions, and address aging infrastructure on the property’s landscape before committing to replacing a building.

The Preserve at Oak Meadows underwent a major two-year restoration project that improved storm water management and water quality for Salt Creek, enhanced habitat for fish and other aquatic species, and created a premier 18-hole public golf destination. It reopened for a brief preview season in late summer 2017 and had a full grand-opening season in 2018.

The property was reconfigured to reduce flooding in nearby communities by holding an additional 20 million gallons of storm water from Salt Creek during flood events while minimizing flood damage to the course. Only 15% of the 288 acres is dedicated to fairways, greens and teeing areas, and the number of holes was reduced from 27 to 18. In addition, the project created 25 acres of wetlands and 43 acres of riparian habitat and restored 13 acres along the Salt Creek corridor to improve water quality and plant and animal diversity.
