Elmhurst police investigate aggravated vehicular hijacking Suspects flee, victim’s car later found abandoned in Chicago

According to a release issued by the City of Elmhurst and Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, there was an incident of aggravated vehicular hijacking that reportedly took place in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven convenience store at 574 S. York St. in Elmhurst.

The release indicated that on Friday, Sept. 17 at 8:45 a.m. Elmhurst Police were dispatched to the parking lot of the 7-Eleven on a report of a vehicular hijacking involving the display of a firearm. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who said his vehicle had

been stolen by two men who were last seen driving it south on York Street.

The victim reported no injuries.

Investigation of the incident has determined that four men occupying a Black Porsche Cayenne SUV pulled into the parking lot of the 7-Eleven as the victim was entering his parked car.

A male suspect exited the Porsche and approached the victim while holding a black handgun. The suspect demanded his car, key fob, and entered the driver seat of the car. A second male suspect exited the Porsche and entered the front passenger seat of the victim’s car. The victim’s car and Porsche then

fled the scene south on York Street. It appears the Porsche was occupied by two additional unknown suspects and that the Porsche was confirmed to be recently stolen in another suburb.

At approximately 12 p.m., the victim’s abandoned vehicle was recovered by the Chicago Police Department on the 6800 block of S. Wabash Ave. The victim’s vehicle was processed by Elmhurst Police evidence technicians and investigators have canvassed the area for security video recordings of the incident.

Vintage Baseball Game returns to Elmhurst University this Sunday The Vintage Baseball Game returns to Elmhurst for an exciting competition this Sunday, Sept. 26, with a rousing game played by the wildly different rules of 1858.

The game is open to the public and takes place on the Elmhurst University Mall in front of Hammerschmidt Chapel beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free, and fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnics and refreshments to enjoy during the game.

The first 100 fans will enjoy free hot dogs and Italian ice. Free parking is available in the Elmhurst University

parking lots.

This year, a special Town vs.

Gown game will pit a team of locals from the City of Elmhurst against Elmhurst University players. The 2021 Vintage Baseball Game is co-presented by Elmhurst University, the Elmhurst History Museum and Heritage Foundation as part of the University’s celebration of its 150th anniversary.

The Elmhurst History Museum’s executive director Dave Oberg will lead the activities in the role of “Barrister” (an umpire by today’s stan-

dards) and will share the rules and slang with the audience.

In conjunction with the University’s sesquicentennial celebration, the Elmhurst History Museum is opening a new exhibit, “An Ever-Widening Circle: Elmhurst University at 150,” on Friday, Sept. 24.

“We’re very excited to take an active role in sharing Elmhurst University’s history through our new exhibit,” said Oberg.

EPAC presents first-ever public art installation

This beautiful sculpture called “Portal” by Nicole Beck was unveiled and dedicated at a special artist’s reception held on Friday, Sept. 17 at its location at 100 S. Addison, just west of The Marke residential building. In front are Mallory and Ethan Murray, 5-year-old twins, who had some fun playing around the sculpture before the arrival of the artist. This is the first installation sponsored by the Elmhurst Public Arts Commission (EPAC) which was established in 2018 to implement a citywide plan for the thoughtful placement of public art to enhance the community and improve its overall aesthetic appeal. If you pass by the sculpture frequently, you will notice it delightfully changes colors at various times of the day and evening, depending on the light.

U.S. News ranks Elmhurst University’s nursing program among best in nation Elmhurst University’s undergraduate nursing program ranks among the best in the nation, according to the latest rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

Published on Sept. 13, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges for 2022 announced its first-ever rankings of bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs. Of 694 top nursing programs across the country, Elmhurst’s ranks 288th, with the very top spots occupied by far larger, research-based institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

Among Illinois schools, Elmhurst ranks sixth. The rankings are based on the judgments of deans and senior faculty members of nursing schools and departments, and institutions around the country.

Elmhurst’s rankings for undergraduate nursing programs build on similar national recognition for the University’s graduate nursing programs, which went up 13 places this year, to No. 146, on U.S. News’ rankings of the country’s Best Graduate Schools. The graduate nursing program ranks sixth in Illinois, again behind much larger institutions such as the University of Illinois at Chica-

go and Rush University.

“For a smaller nursing program to be in the top 40 percent nationwide, and ranked sixth in the state of Illinois with large and well-known programs, speaks to the quality of

the nursing programs at Elmhurst University,” said Diane Salvador, executive director of the department of nursing and health sciences.

“As we maintain our focus on student-centeredness, academic rigor

and high-quality faculty, we look forward to continued success for the program and our students.”

Elmhurst rose several spots this year in the Best Value Schools category, from 23rd to 17th among uni-

versities in the Midwest region. To determine which colleges and universities offer the best value for students, U.S. News factors academic quality and cost after accounting for total expenses and financial aid.

In June of 2017, the Elmhurst Independent brought its readers a story that touched many hearts. A couple who had been dating for five years found themselves in the hospital after the man, Thomas King, had a cardiac episode. He decided right then and there, with his lady-friend Alexandria Dolezal at his side, that they should stop putting it off and get married – which they did. In a matter of a few days, Tom and Alex tied the knot at the Elmhurst Hospital Chapel in front of a dozen or so friends and many members of the hospital staff.

The Hospital Pastoral Care unit stepped up to help and provided a wedding cake and flowers. They arranged for coffee to be served following the ceremony. Then two nurses took him down to the chapel, still hooked up to his heart monitor. They stayed through the ceremony to make sure nothing bad happened.

Sadly on Monday, Sept. 20, Alex notified the Independent that Tom had passed away and asked us to publish the following obituary.

Thomas Francis King, of Villa Park, died on Sept. 11, 2021, at the age of 72. Beloved husband of Alexandria Dolezal; loving father of Kimberlie (Jason) Pearlman, Beth (Charles) Henry, and Lisa (Edward) Stasch; fond brother of Mark King, and proud grandfather of Max, Sophia, Ethan, Phoebe, Lucille, and Francine. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years, Nancy Srubas King, his parents Don and Mary King, his sister Ann King, and his brother Stephen King. For service

Tom was an active member of The Chicago Sail and Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed sailing with many friends in Michigan City, New Buffalo, Waukegan, and Chicago. In July 2012, his sailboat “Waka Waka” placed fourth in its section in the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac.

Tom lived in Villa Park for more than 40 years and enjoyed coaching for youth softball, baseball and track with his daughters. He was a graduate of York High School in Elmhurst and Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.

He was a software developer and entrepreneur and worked in sales for various marine and technology products. “King of the Hill Fly Fishing” and “Internet in Motion” were several of his favorite ventures.

Tom had been struggling with heart problems over the past few years. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family and his four-legged family of rescue pets.

Police investigating alleged robbery at Thornton’s Gas Station

According to a release issued by Police Chief Michael Ruth and the City of Elmhurst, police are currently investigating a robbery that reportedly occurred on Monday, Sept. 20 at about 1:45 p.m. at the Thornton’s Gas Station at 476 No. York. The offender was described as a light complexion black male, approximately 6-foot-4, about 2535 years of age, and a small lateral scar on the front of his neck. He was described as medium build wearing a blue/white surgical style mask, a gray/white hoody, and dark blue running pants with a lighter blue stripe.

According to the report, the male offender walked to the cash register to make a purchase. Once the

cash register was opened, the offender jumped over the counter and attempted to pull the cash register away from the clerk. The offender grabbed cash from the open cash register and then fled the store running northbound, then westbound along Lake Street.

Elmhurst Police responded to the area and completed a search with the assistance of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department K9 bloodhound unit. Local schools were put on temporary “soft” lockdown while the search was completed and until it was determined that the offender was no longer in the area.

This incident remains under active investigation and anyone with information on the identity of the offender is asked to call the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.

Levin discusses uptick in certain crimes Residents urged to sign up for ‘Code Red’ alerts

“The safety of our residents is our greatest concern,” Mayor Levin said at the City Council meeting held on Monday, Sept. 20.

Levin said most crimes are actually down from previous years, but he noted a rise in vehicle robberies and car-jacking.

“Those types of crimes typically take place in cities in which people tend to drive high-end vehicles,” he said. “[The suspects] arrive in vehicles that are already stolen, they go to neighborhoods with high end vehicles, get a new one, leave the first stolen vehicle behind. Then those stolen vehicles can be used to commit crimes such as drive-by shootings.

“There was a recent incident in Hinsdale and there are many people in Hinsdale who drive high-end vehicles. That’s what criminals look for.”

How is Elmhurst doing as a community?

“Of course, we cannot comment on any of the incidents that are currently under investigation,” Levin said, “but we are fortunate to have technology that helps identify potential criminals. For instance, we have technology that tells us when a vehicle registered as stolen enters our City. Many times, police will follow them and stop them.”

He added that those incidents sometimes result in a high-speed chase. He said the number of police pursuits has risen over the past few years: there were 15 in 2017, 20 in 2018, 10 in 2019, then a jump to 51 in 2020, and thus far in 2021, police are already at 63.

The other thing Levin mentioned is that since the beginning of the pandemic, police departments and law enforcement agencies throughout the area have been working together to coordinate efforts and share information.

“It’s a great way to exchange ideas,” Levin said.

John taught passionately as a Professor in the Social Sciences department at Triton College in River Grove for more than 30 years. Famous for rewriting his course syllabi to reflect new research, he never tired of discussing life’s big questions with his students— particularly in his favorite courses, Cultural Anthropology and Child Development.

After his retirement, John continued to adjunct at Triton and maintained a booth at a local antique mall.

John was a friend to many including his neighbors, fellow antique mall dealers, golfing buddies and high school classmates “the Bobcats.”

John was a decent and pragmatic man that navigated life with so few conflicts. He strived to be an example for his family and gave endlessly with his time, nurturing his sons’ pursuits. In his work and hobbies, he was organized, thorough, and professional.

John was a deeply sensitive man who took great pains not to burden others with his troubles or shortcomings. Despite his wisdom and natural intelligence, he showed great restraint not to meddle in others’ affairs. If called upon, he seemed perpetually ready to assist or lead with measured grace and fortitude.

John led a comfortable lifestyle in retirement all the way up to a sudden hospitalization less than two days before he passed. He was blessed to only suffer for a very short time.

Obituaries

Bernice E. Hunt, 96 Bernice E. Hunt, nee Loosemore, of Villa Park, passed away on Sept. 9, 2021, at the age of 96, surrounded by the prayers of her loved ones. Bernice was born on May 3, 1925, in Skanee, Mich., to the late George and Hazel (Barnett) Loosemore.

She attended Skanee School through grade 10 and graduated from L’Anse High School in 1943. She worked in Detroit for the United States Weather Bureau until she was 20 years old and eligible to join the United States Navy Waves. She was stationed in New York and Great Lakes, where she met her future husband, Ray D. Hunt, at the USO in Chicago. They were married for 39 years.

Not only was she a proud United States Navy and WWII veteran, but she was also a long-time member and Sunday school teacher at Concordia Lutheran Church in Hillside, Ill. She later became a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Elmhurst. Bernice and Ray worked together to establish Hunt Properties, building and managing their industrial buildings for many years.

She is survived by her loving children Tracy (Catharine) Hunt and Kathy Turner; adoring grandchildren Beth Hunt, Brian Hunt, Alex Turner, and Kelsey Turner; cherished brother Wesley Loosemore; and many treasured nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, and her sister Delores. A memorial service will be held at a day and time to be determined. Interment at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst. Dr. Frank Mittermeyer, 78 Dr. Frank Mittermeyer passed away in the early hours on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2021, at the age of 78, in Madison, Wis., surrounded by his family. He was born on Oct. 16, 1942, at the family home in Cornell, Wis., the son of Dr. Edward J. and Adeline Mittermeyer, RN. Frank was raised in a big family at a house his parents built on Main Street in Cornell, Wis. He loved the outdoors and playing all sports. At Cornell High School he was a foursport varsity letter athlete all four years and enjoyed great success in the early 1960s on powerhouse teams. He loved to share stories and detailed play-by-plays about those sporting competitions, the athletes and the games. After graduation, Frank met the love of his life and married Sandra Bullock from Eau Claire. They raised two girls while pursuing their career goals.

Frank attended UW-La Crosse, where he played football and majored in biology. He earned his M.S. in microbiology at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., and his Ph.D. in biology/microbiology from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. In 1969, Frank began a 44-year legacy career at Elmhurst College, now University. He was an enthusiastic and passionate profes-

care for them, as well as for our most vulnerable, especially those with developmental disabilities, mental health and addiction challenges.”

DiCianni has longed championed public safety, economic development, infrastructure and health care initiatives throughout his elected public service. Prior to becoming a DuPage County Board member, DiCianni served as the Mayor of Elmhurst from 2009-2012, where he spearheaded a record $1 billion economic development recovery during one of the nation’s worst recessions.

The recovery plan including the building of Elmhurst Hospital which created employment for more than 4,000 workers.

His 10 years of volunteer service (1996-2006) running Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation prepared him for what would prove to be a life-changing achievement helping children diagnosed with autism and their families. After DiCianni’s own daughter Brianna was diagnosed with autism when she was a toddler, DiCianni and his wife Rose, a Registered Nurse at Loyola University Medical Center, realized there was no insurance coverage for key and expensive health services aimed at

helping those facing the diagnosis.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported three incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle or a motorcycle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Assault, battery Sept. 15 A complainant in the 500 block of E. Park told police at 9:18 p.m. that while running in the roadway he observed a suspect swerve his vehicle towards him. The victim and the suspect then had a verbal argument. This case is pending investigation.

Sept. 12 A victim in the 400 block of May told police at 6:53 a.m. that the suspect called and texted her, saying she owed him money and he was “coming to get it.” The suspect arrived at the above address and a verbal argument ensued.

The suspect grabbed the victim, threw her to the ground and fled the scene. The officer observed a cut to the palm of her hand that was bleeding. Officers checked the area for the suspect with no results. Charges are pending.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Sept. 14-Sept. 15 A reporting officer met with a complainant who reported an electric vehicle charging station had been damaged in the 100 block of N. Addison sometime between the above dates.

Sept. 7-Sept. 11 A complainant in the 700 block of Michigan told police that she observed a small hole in a side window of the detached garage. The hole appeared to have been made by a BB sometime between the above dates.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Sept. 15 Robert A. Kaye, 22, of Oak Brook, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication in the 1000 block of S. York at 12:40 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of a male suspect attempting to enter several vehicles. The reporting officer made contact with Kaye, who admitted to being under the influence, according to police.

Sept. 11 Juan Ocegueda Ramirez, 61, of Melrose Park, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/befouling property, in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 1:46 p.m. Police said a complainant observed the suspect urinating in the Kohl’s parking lot. According to police, Ramirez was located and admitted to urinating outside of a vehicle.

A 43-year-old Wood Dale man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 500 block of W. Lake at 11:16 p.m. A victim told police that the suspect pushed her, punched her, and took her keys and cell phone. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.

The suspect stated she threw the cans after the complainant pushed her to the ground. No injuries observed and no arrests were made due to conflicting statements from both parties.

Sept. 9 Zachary Facemyer, 25 of Draper, Utah, and Christopher Andrade-Carrera, 19, of Melrose Park, were both charged under local ordinance for disorderly conduct in the 100 block of N. York at 10:55 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above address for a fight. Officers spoke with the complainant who related that a group of males were fighting. Police said officers spoke Facemyer and Andrade-Carrera who were in a verbal dispute which turned physical after Andrade-Carrera allegedly threw a drink at Facemyer.

A 64-year-old Villa Park man was charged with domestic battery in the 500 block of S. York at 9:02 a.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the victim who reported the suspect pushed her. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival but was later located at his residence.

Sept. 14 Police said a complainant in the 900 block of S. Hillcrest reported receiving multiple text messages containing obscene messages from an unknown suspect. The reporting officer attempted to contact the phone number listed but was unable to reach anyone. The complainant requested the incident be documented.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Sept. 15 Emmett Hankey, 25, of Chicago, was charged with driving while license suspended, unlawful possession of cannabis by driver, no rear registration plate light and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at 12:07 a.m.

Sept. 13 Robert T. Kwaitkowski, 21, of Oak Brook, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis by a driver in the 300 block of E. Butterfield at 12:41 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances Sept. 12 A victim in the 900 block of N. Virginia told police she is an Uber driver, and while transporting the unknown suspect, he touched her inappropriately, called her names, and struck her vehicle with his fists. An investigation is pending.

Sept. 9 A complainant in the 300 block of Poplar told police at 8:14 p.m. that a suspect described as a black female knocked on his front door, told him her phone was dead, and asked him to make a phone call to have someone pick her up. The complainant made the phone call and approximately four minutes later, the suspect’s ride arrived. Upon reviewing his Ring video, he observed the suspect using her phone after she told him it was dead.

Sept. 12 Brittany R. Levi, 21, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and possession of cannabis by a driver subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Grand at 2:03 a.m.

The letters included credit card applications and collection notices for the unknown suspect. The complainant stated she would report the issue to the USPS. The victim later discovered this was a scam.

Sept. 9-Sept. 10 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 200 block of E. North. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converters from his vehicle while it was parked in his driveway overnight sometime between the above dates.

Sept. 9 Theft was reported at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at 1:19 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed her purse from her shopping cart while she was shopping in the store.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of W. Second at 6:35 p.m. A victim told police that her purse was stolen from her unlocked vehicle while it was parked at the above location. The victim stated that someone also had fraudulently tried to use her credit card at a Walgreens in Hinsdale. An officer reviewed security footage from the Walgreens and observed two suspects both described as black males attempt to purchase items using multiple credit cards.

Sept. 8-Sept. 9 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 500 block of W. Wrightwood. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converters from two trucks parked at the above location sometime between the above dates.

Aug. 24 Theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Fay at 11:57 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) stole a package from her front porch.

Unemployment benefits identity theft

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

District 205 Board discusses administrators, consultants Consultant who had reported grievances against him has resigned

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a special meeting on Sept. 15 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Board member Jim Collins was absent from the meeting. There were no public comments. The open-session portion of the meeting lasted only about 10 minutes.

Board president Kara Caforio stated that the board would approve an agreement with an interim executive director of communications and public relations. Bev Redmond, the district’s executive director of communications and public relations for

three years, recently left the position and is no longer with the district.

Before the board voted unanimously to approve the agreement with the interim executive director of communications and public relations, Caforio stated that she wanted to “put a few facts out there.” Caforio then said that District 205 currently has three assistant superintendents and one associate superintendent.

She added that the district has 18 administrators. She said the board currently has a contract with one consultant, Dr. Linda Yonke, who served as interim superintendent before Dr. Keisha Campbell became District 205’s superintendent this summer.

Top crime news Burglary suspect vehicles flee before arrest can be made On Friday, Sept. 10, attempted burglary was reported in the 100 block of E. Fullerton at 2:03 a.m. While on patrol, officers observed three vehicles which were reported to have been involved in commercial burglaries in other towns. Officers attempted a traffic stop on the offending vehicles but they fled at a high rate of speed and were last seen traveling eastbound on Grand Avenue. Officers checked the local businesses and heard an audible alarm from the above location. A glass door to the main entrance was damaged but no entry was gained. The reporting officer reviewed security footage and observed three vehicles back into the parking lot and four suspects exit two of the vehicles. One suspect struck the glass door with an unknown object and then fled the scene.

Woman allegedly leaves handgun in Elmhurst Clinic bathroom On Monday, Sept. 13, Joanne A. Fargas, 45, of Bellwood, was charged with violation of the Concealed Carry Act/Prohibited Location in the 100 block of Schiller at 10:59 a.m. Police said a black 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun was located in a bathroom at the Elmhurst Clinic, According to police, Fargas was located, related that she forgot her firearm in the bathroom, and said she did not see the “No Firearms” sign on the door.

Due to the threat and the suspect’s actions, an ISPERN was broadcast. Contact was made with the suspect who stated she was heading to Indianapolis to visit friends. The suspect was advised to have no contact with the victim.

Elmhurst Library to receive more than $65,000 for programs, materials

According to a release by State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs), nine libraries in the 24th Senate District will soon see upgrades to services thanks to more than $316,000 in grants.

“Libraries provide a safe space for residents to use a computer, check out a book or learn a new skill,” Glowiak Hilton said. “People rely on technology for work, school and everyday life—when they can’t access these resources at home, libraries can fill the gaps.”

Among the libraries, the Elmhurst Public Library is slated to receive $65,078.48.

The $316,086.62 received by nine local libraries is part of $18.1 million in grants awarded to 638 public libraries across the state. For more than 40 years, the Illinois Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grants Program has helped public libraries with a low library tax base to ensure a minimum level of funding for library services.

Libraries will use the grants from the secretary of state’s office to help fund new services and products, such as audiobooks, adult programming, dual language materials and more.

“State funding helps libraries continue to provide much-needed resources to the community,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Students, seniors and families will reap the benefits of these grants at their local libraries.”

The Martha Ibbetson Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is holding a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 8 at 12 noon at the historical artifact from the Great Chicago Fire in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park. One of the rooftop finials from the Cook County Courthouse, which was destroyed in the fire 150 years ago, is installed near the front door of the Wilder Park Conservatory on Prospect Avenue.

The DAR has purchased a new plaque for the artifact, which will be dedicated at the ceremony. Daniel Lund, from the Elmhurst History Museum, will be on hand to talk about the history of the artifact and the fire. The public is invited.

York soccer team to be recognized for fundraising efforts

On Thursday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m., the York High School soccer team will take on Nequa Valley at York stadium.

The York Community High School soccer program has been raising funds for Charityball, which helps fund the delivery of new, high-quality soccer balls to children in need across the globe. The evening has been designated “CharityBall Night,” to celebrate the York team’s contributions.

They have raised $6,000 in total since the beginning of the campaign, but last year was a particular struggle with COVID-19. Now, in 2021, they have already raised $1,285 this year and continue the effort.

Ethan King, founder of CharityBall, will be at the game for a special presentation to the team.

All are welcome to attend.

Reflections on the 20th anniversary of 9/11

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi We commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9/11 earlier this month.

We remembered the nearly 3,000 people who died that day.

I was honored to join with local representatives, firefighters and police officers in Schaumburg on Sept. 11 to remember the sacrifices of the heroes that day.

As I said at that ceremony, we saw the “9/11 spirit” in the aftermath: courage in the face of evil, resilience in the face of tragedy, and unity above all else.

Updates from the COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus I’d like to share some exciting updates from my COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus. I was pleased

to see last week that President Biden is making plans for a global summit on COVID-19 vaccine supplies, manufacturing, and distribution.

Given that the COVID-19 virus has wreaked havoc across the globe, it is only logical that we would form international coalitions to defeat it.

My COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus was also encouraged to see last week that the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act, which included $2 billion to expand global and domestic vaccine manufacturing.

While we need more support to vaccinate the nearly 60 percent of the world yet to receive a single dose of any COVID-19 vaccine, this is still an important step in our goal of ending this pandemic. The COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus is committed to efforts that aggressively attack the virus, such as my NOVID Act which

would create a U.S.-led program to vaccinate populations in the 92 poorest countries. This will save lives in those impoverished countries, as well as protect our country from further deadly COVID-19 variants arriving at our shores.

Provisions from my Tobacco Tax Equity Act included in Build Back Better Act Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act, which included provisions from my Tobacco Tax Equity Act. I introduced the Tobacco Tax Equity Act alongside Senator Durbin to close loopholes in the tax code, raise cigarette taxes for the first time in over a decade, and apply federal taxes on e-cigarettes—such as JUUL products—for the first time.

E-cigarettes have grown in popularity among our youth population, with 20 percent of high school students reportedly using them in 2020, and it is time they are taxed like cigarettes to discourage their use among kids and teens.

Judiciary Committee heeds my calls for reforming employmentbased green card system After much advocacy efforts, I’m pleased to report that the House Judiciary Committee passed its portion of the Build Back Better Act this week, which included relief to individuals in

the employment-based green card backlog.

As an original cosponsor of the Equal Access to Green Cards for Legal Employment (EAGLE) Act (H.R. 3648), I led 40 Members of Congress in sending a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on the importance of including this reform in this package.

The provisions included in the Judiciary Committee’s bill include measures to make the system faster, simpler and aid the over 1.2 million individuals stuck in the backlog. I hope that the Senate follows through on the next step and passes this portion of the Build Back Better Act. Empathy helps us come together, move on

Weeks ago I started out contemplating a list of seven words that led me to some universal life truths.

I wrote about two — kindness and compassion. I had three more columns written and in the hopper when one of life’s universal truths happened. My computer crashed and all my information was lost, including the written, albeit unpublished, columns.

Welcome to life.

As the days wore on my viewpoint of those seven crucial and critical words changed. The columns I’d so carefully crafted about the key words were no longer key. The words changed because my perspective changed.

Because the world changed.

Because it is always changing.

I wish I could tell you I have it all figured out, but I don’t. I’m still figuring it out and I’ll continue to attempt to communicate this figuring as I go along.

One of the words I wrote about was forgiveness. In it, I explained that forgiving others liberates us because harboring ill-will tethers us to others in a negative sense.

That’s still true, but I no longer believe forgiveness is necessary to a life best-lived. Here’s why: Forgiving isn’t our responsibility, or even our right.

Big thought, I know. And a big thought deserves a big answer.

We aren’t here to forgive. We are here to live out our own story, without a focus on the good or bad deeds of others. Believing someone needs forgiveness gives them a power over us that I don’t think we want to give. Simply put, it’s a waste of time.

People will come and go in our lives. Sometimes, from our perspective, they will do us wrong, but forgiving isn’t necessary for our continued growth or well-being.

Most often when someone wrongs us, they have no desire, intention or even knowledge of this wrong. Even if they do, their actions aren’t based on the outcome that affects us, but more likely the outcome that affects them. We are a byproduct, yet we see ourselves as the center of the action needing forgiving. Welcome to the human condition.

With a vast background of ICCP family members as alumni, Marshall is no stranger to the IC community.

He attended St. Francis High School in Wheaton and continued his education at Loras College, where he received a B.A. degree in Public Relations and Media Studies. While attending school, he maintained an internship as director of marketing for McGrath Family of Dealerships and worked on the Loras campus in the Admissions department.

It is our duty to move on.

And, while doing so, maybe, instead of forgiveness, I suggest empathy. Forgiveness implies me versus you; it implies I am right and you are wrong. Empathy implies us. To empathize is to understand the perspective and the situation of another. It is putting yourself in their shoes to literally feel the blisters. It is hurting when they hurt. Because they hurt.

Sometimes we all hurt.

It is understanding their mistake, because we all make mistakes.

It is even understanding their selfishness because we have all been selfish at one time or another.

There is a quote that ties in with this idea. It is attributed to a Christian pastor named Steven Furtick, but I believe it is a thought that goes beyond religion and illustrates my point on forgiveness nearly perfectly, “Even people who betray you are part of the plan. Jesus couldn’t get to the cross without Judas.”

Harboring ill-will is burdensome.

It weighs us down. We have the notion that forgiveness alleviates that weight, but what if we never harbored the ill-will in the first place? What if we realized that it isn’t for us to forgive, because it isn’t?

If someone needs forgiveness, it can come from only one source: themselves. True forgiveness must come from within. Often forgiving ourselves is one of the hardest things to do, because self-forgiveness takes the focus off the self and onto others. It is examining our actions and feeling empathy for how they may have affected and hurt others.

It is taking the focus off me and putting it on we.

It is coming to the understanding we are all in this together; so much more so than just on our own. We are better together, especially when we buoy each other up, even when we have been wronged.

And together is the only way we will get there — blisters and all. I’m rooting for us.

New Pedicab business on the move Owner explains impact on environment, local community

A pedicab is a small pedal-operated vehicle that serves as a taxi.

This unconventional method of transportation is taking the city of Elmhurst by storm via Elmhurst Pedicab Co. Elmhurst Pedicab was founded

by Elmhurst resident Michael McCracken in 2021.

McCracken says the idea was conceived amid the pandemic when travel was difficult.

“It was such a burden to get around town to see friends and family during that time,” he said.

“I finally thought of the solution: Elmhurst needs Pedicabs!”

McCracken has described the endeavor as successful thus far and credits the local businesses he connects with.

“It’s somewhat of a symbiotic relationship,” he said. “I support cherished local businesses in Elmhurst and my pedicab company continues to grow and become well-known amongst its citizens.”

McCracken also expressed support for protecting the environment and how mainstreaming pedicabs could further that goal.

“It’s better than Uber,” he said.

“Pedicabs release zero emissions into the atmosphere.”

The pedicab was on the scene at last weekend’s Craft Beer Fest hosted by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation on the lawn of the Elmhurst History Museum.

When asked about the origins of the business, McCracken said the memory of his grandfather and his passion for biking are what motivated him most.

“I still carry my late grandfather’s bike computer around with me today,” he said.

“It serves as a reminder of the family that put me on this path and a symbol for my undying love of biking.”

Elmhurst Pedicab’s lineup currently consists of a classic threeseat pedicab and a more deluxe sixseat pedicab.

“The classic is equipped with turn signals and is often used to commute downtown,” McCracken said.

“The six seat pedicab that we call “the limo” is designed for special occasions such as double dates or birthday parties.”

Final prices are determined by the length of your ride and the model of your pedicab, both of which can be selected while scheduling an appointment on their website at elmhurstpedicab.com.

Owner addresses concerns McCracken talked about potential criticisms of his business model such as slower speeds and longer times to reach a destination.

“We’re not a full cab replacement,” he said. “If you need to get somewhere in two minutes that is five miles away then we are not the thing to do.”

McCracken did reaffirm that his drivers would always try their best and operate with the customer’s valuable time in mind. He also assured that the four drivers under his employ are all licensed by the city and vetted by the Elmhurst Police Department.

“We are a legitimate enterprise,” he said. “I think countering people’s mistrust of what they might perceive to be a niche and unserious business is critical.”

He believes his business will expand as people realize that pedicabs are often preferable to standard cabs, especially in Elmhurst “It’s just as affordable as a taxi and it’s the ideal option to travel through small towns in a fun, friendly, and safe way,” McCracken said. “We love taking customers down new routes and side roads so they can experience Elmhurst in a unique way.”

Effective marketing is paramount to long-term growth, McCracken said. Business connections, postcards, and social media are tactics he is currently employing.

“We’ve amassed quite the following on Instagram in the short amount of time we have been active,” he said. “This indicates that the interest is definitely there and it’s just a matter of sending a message and raising awareness.”

McCracken concluded by predicting future success for his company and attributing it to his positivity and passion.

“It’s all about supporting people and building community for me,” he said. “I’m happy to be making a difference in Elmhurst and I have no plans on stopping anytime soon.”

Sold-out presales and a record-breaking number of walk-ins netted about 2,000 people on the lawn of the Elmhurst History Museum. Along with absolutely beautiful weather – not too hot, not too cold, a nice breeze now and then – Saturday, Sept. 18 turned out to be a perfect afternoon of great times and community spirit for the 6th annual Craft Beer Fest hosted by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation. Not only was this the biggest Fest the Foundation ever held (three tents of brewers), but also there was an air of delight in the feeling of normalcy, as everyone enjoyed the out-of-doors without the cloud of COVID-19 overhead (although many people still wore masks).

It’s too early to tell the final net proceeds, but Elmhurst History Museum Executive Director Dave Oberg said that pre-sales were completely sold out and that the record number of people who paid at the entrance made a total attendance of more than 2,000 people.

Lawmakers question enforcement of school mask mandates Ask state education board to adopt formal rules on enforcement actions

Expressing concern that the Illinois State Board of Education might have overstepped its bounds by threatening to withhold funding from school districts that do not enforce its mask mandate, a legislative panel on Sept. 14 urged the agency to put its policies into formal rules.

The unanimous vote by the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, or JCAR, represented one of the few times that Illinois lawmakers have pushed back against the enforcement of Gov. JB Pritzker’s executive orders since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it came after intense questioning of ISBE officials, especially from Republican members of the panel.

Sen. Don DeWitte, R-St. Charles, said he personally has no problem with wearing masks or getting vaccinated and that he encourages others to get vaccinated as well.

“Having said that, I do have concerns with government overreach and those who act outside their authority,” he said.

“That is the purpose of our questions today. As one member of JCAR, it is incumbent upon all of us to ask questions to ensure government is acting within its authority and in line with state statute.”

On Aug. 4, Pritzker issued an executive order requiring all public and nonpublic PreK-12 schools to follow joint guidance from ISBE and the Illinois Department of Public Health by requiring all students, staff and visitors to wear masks indoors at school.

Since then, the state board has taken an aggressive stance in enforcing that rule by either placing districts on probation or, in the case of nonpublic schools, revoking their official state recognition.

According to data from the state board, 47 public school districts have been placed on suspension for refusing to comply, although all but four of them have since agreed to come into

compliance. Beecher City CUSD 20, Hutsonville CUSD 1, Cowden-Herrick CUSD 3A and Nauvoo-Colusa CSD 325 remained on probation as of Tuesday, meaning they are at risk of losing state recognition and state funding.

A total of 15 nonpublic school systems have had their state recognition revoked for noncompliance, although six of those have since had their recognition restored. Losing recognition can mean, among other things, that their graduation diplomas are not recognized by state colleges and universities and they are ineligible to take part in interscholastic events.

DeWitte and other Republicans on the panel questioned whether the state board had any statutory or administrative authority to take enforcement action against schools that refuse to comply with “guidance” issued by state agencies.

“Guidance is guidance. Guidance is not a rule,” said Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego. “A rule is enforceable. A statute is enforceable. I don’t believe that an executive order is enforceable to the same degree as statute or (a rule).”

But Kristen Kennedy, deputy legal counsel for ISBE, said the agency was relying on an existing administrative rule that says, “A school district shall be placed on probation if it exhibits deficiencies that present a health hazard or a danger to students or staff” as well as Pritzker’s executive order and the joint guidance issued by IDPH and ISBE. She also cited a 2020 Sangamon County court ruling involving the Hutsonville school district—one of the four public districts still on probation—that held Pritzker’s executive orders and the joint guidance were all legally issued and enforceable.

“concern that policies outside of rule may exist” and encouraging ISBE “to place all policy and guidance in rule.” The motion specifically urged ISBE to propose rules that more clearly defined process to be used before revoking a school’s recognition.

The motion passed, 10-0. JCAR’s next scheduled meeting is set for Tuesday, Oct. 19, in Springfield, which is the first day of the General Assembly’s fall veto session.

Further investigation into the crime led authorities to a similar armed robbery in Darien committed earlier this month. On Wednesday, Sept. 1 at approximately 12:07 a.m., an armed robbery occurred at the Shell Gas Station located at 8226 Cass Avenue. scene on foot. On Friday, Sept. 17, the Downers Grove Police, with the assistance of DuMeg, apprehended both defendants as they were driving in DuPage County.

“The identification and apprehension of the defendants in this case sends the message that if you commit a violent crime in DuPage County, you will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Berlin said.

The next court date for both men is scheduled for Oct. 12, 2for arraignment in front of Judge John Kinsella.

The Illinois Supreme Court is being asked to consider the laws of the state of California and the U.S. Constitution in ruling on one man’s eligibility to be issued a Firearm Owners Identification card by the Illinois State Police.

The high court heard oral arguments Sept. 16 in Springfield in Thomas Brown v. the Illinois State Police, a case in which Brown is seeking to have his FOID rights restored so that he can participate in target shooting, hunting and be able to defend himself, according to a court filing.

Brown was a FOID cardholder for several years, most recently applying for and being granted renewal in 2013.

But in 2016, he tried to purchase a gun at a federal firearm licensee, leading the Illinois State Police to conduct a background check.

That unearthed a 2001 conviction in California on a “misdemeanor offense of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse” that he did not disclose on his FOID application, according to a filing before the Supreme Court.

In that case, Brown and his thenwife had an argument in a parking lot, after which Brown picked her up, according to the court filing, and she ended up “crawling down his back” and sustaining “minor road rash,” for which she did not seek medical attention.

After Brown spent three days in jail, he eventually pleaded guilty and paid an approximately $500 fine because, according to the court filing, “otherwise it would have cost him $5,000 to bail out of jail so that he could fight the case and he was advised by the company that he worked for at the time to take the plea bargain.”

While Brown’s lawyer questioned whether he knew the arrangement would affect his gun rights, the conviction ultimately qualified as a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, prohibiting Brown from possessing a firearm under federal law. Because Illinois’ FOID Act states that a card may not be issued “contrary to federal law,” the State Police revoked his card upon the failed background check.

Federal law does, however, allow exceptions for gun ownership if a person convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor has had their “civil rights restored” in the jurisdiction that convicted them—in this case, California.

In a 2020 case, Johnson v. the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled gun ownership is a “civil right” in terms of the federal provision, a precedent cited heavily in Brown’s court filings.

Brown’s attorney, James R. Angel of Princeton’s May, May, Angel & Harris, is primarily asking the Illinois Supreme Court to interpret whether a specific California law constitutes a restoration of civil rights.

Brown’s legal team specifically noted that California only penalizes gun possession for 10 years following a misdemeanor conviction. That means, they argue, Brown had his civil rights restored under California law in 2011, qualifying him for the federal exception which would in turn qualify him for a FOID card.

“If California has a problem with Mr. Brown being able to possess a firearm, California can change its very clear statute,” Angel argued before the court.

But Katelin Buell, a lawyer for the attorney general’s office which represents the Illinois State Police, said California’s 10-year window is “a matter of forbearance, not forgiveness.”

It prevents prosecutors from charging someone convicted of a misdemeanor after 10 years but does not satisfy the “civil rights restored” exception in federal law, meaning it is “not a substitute for an affirmative statement of restoration and forgiveness,” according to Buell.

“The convicting jurisdiction of California employs a different restoration process for civil rights, including firearm rights, than in Illinois, and California would not grant Brown this relief without him first seeking a pardon, which he has not done,” Buell argued.

If the Supreme Court does not determine that the California law equates to a restoration of civil rights, Brown’s lawyers have asked it to consider the case through the lens of the U.S. Constitution.

Specifically, Angel asserted that requiring a person who “poses no risk to the general public” to successfully seek a pardon for a misdemeanor before they can own a firearm is an unconstitutional “perpetual ban” on gun ownership.

The state argued the constitutional question is “premature” because Brown hasn’t even attempted all non-constitutional alternatives for rectifying the denial, including seeking pardon or expungement.

“If a pardon’s denied, to the best of my knowledge, you can always apply again,” Angel said. “So hypothetically that remedy is never met.”

But the state also argued the Supreme Court can avoid the constitutional question altogether by applying the legal principles of the FOID Act, which says ISP can deny a FOID if issuing it would be against the public interest. \ In court documents, the state cited Brown’s 2001 arrest, a 2005 DUI conviction in Bureau County, a 2005 arrest for battery in LaSalle County that did not lead to criminal charges, and a 1997 conviction for misdemeanor assault that occurred when he was a minor.

The court only heard arguments in the case, with opinions expected later this month or in October.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team defeats Wheaton Academy Kerrigan picks up 150th career coaching victory

The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team continued its strong start to the season with a recent 25-9, 25-17 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win over Wheaton Academy.

The win moved to the Knights to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The victory also was coach Nancy Kerrigan’s 150th in her seven-plus years at the helm since taking over for the legendary Jean Field. Kerrigan also played for Field at IC Catholic Prep and was her longtime assistant coach.

In the win against Wheaton Academy, Ava Falduto had six kills, two digs, two assists and one block.

Claire Wagner had six kills, two digs and three aces. Allie Geiger had two kills and two blocks, while Lucy Russ had 17 assists, three digs and one ace.

In other recent play, the Knights downed Riverside-Brookfield (25-18, 25-18) and lost to St. Francis (25-20, 14-25, 25-21).

Kerrigan noted one big key for the Knights so far this season has been the play of sophomore Ava Falduto who moved from libero to outside hitter this season.

“Over the summer, I asked Ava to change roles to fill a gap in our offense,” Kerrigan said. “She is incredibly athletic and has a super-high volleyball IQ and is arguable one of the best defensive players in the state.

At the end of last season, she stepped up into that role when Claire Wagner went down with an ankle injury, and she did an outstanding job. It was then that I had the first thought that

she could have an impact as a six-rotation outside attacker. She attacks with power and efficiency and is only going to get better as she gets more comfortable on the offensive side of the game. She has embraced her new role and is having some fun with it, too.”

Kerrigan said the Knights have made huge progress with first-ball contacts. “We have been doing a ton of work on our first contact skills, specifically in serve receive and defense,” she explained. “Both have improved at a much faster pace than I anticipated.”

Kerrigan pointed out IC Catholic prep returned only two passers in Wagner and Falduto and three backrow defensive players with varsity time in Wagner, Falduto and Russ. “I planned for more foundational work as we entered the season,” she said.

IC Catholic Prep has been winning games with a youth movement

of sorts in the starting lineup, which includes freshman Emily Carling and five sophomores with Falduto, Russ, Geiger (middle blocker), Jenny Fromelt (middle blocker) and libero Alysa Lawton, plus Wagner, a senior.

“You really wouldn’t know that by watching them,” Kerrigan said, referencing the starters’ years in school.

“They do have their moments when their inexperience shows, but so far those moments have been outnumbered by moments of brilliant team play. They do not play with fear, and I am already starting to see hints of confidence that you would expect from a much more experienced team.

From top to bottom, the entire team is working hard and they are already seeing the value of that on the court and as a team.”

Kerrigan said Wagner (outside hitter), Falduto and Russ (outside hitter) have done well in the leadership department. “As a sophomore, Lucy has

been tasked with setting a 5-1 for the first time in her high school career,” she said. “Last season she had a very productive season as a right side attacker, so her understanding the pace of the varsity match, but running the floor is very different. She is getting better every day at leading her attackers and making good strategic decisions. Claire and Ava are getting into their groove on the outside, giving us a powerful and balanced attack. All three of these young ladies are great students of the games, so I am excited to see how much sharper we will be at the end of the season.”

In terms of a first 10-match critique, Kerrigan likes what she has seen so far. “We are on the right path playing big competition and learning court maturity as a team,” she said.

“This young team will be battle tested when we get to the latter part of our season when we will need to draw on that to make a run in the postseason.”

York boys golf team goes toe to toe with Hinsdale Central

IC Catholic Prep boys golf team records two wins

In the snap of a finger, the York boys golf team is in the home stretch of its 2021 season.

The Dukes wrapped up West Suburban Conference Silver Division regular season play with a 154-160 loss to Hinsdale Central at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale.

“Our kids played well, but their kids played better,” York coach Jim Borel said.

The loss put York at 3-5 overall in dual meets and 3-3 in WSC Silver play.

Nolan Stasica led the Dukes with a 38. Jack Ginter shot 40, while Cooper Schwartz, Sam Wit and Jake Wool each shot 41.

Through late last week, York was averaging 159.25 for nine holes. Witt was leading the team with a 40.2 average, while Wool was at 40.3. Kevin Koenigsberger was at 41.0 and Tyler Koenigsberger was at 41.2. Stasica was at 41.909, while Connolly was at 41.917 and Schwartz was at 41.92.

York was scheduled to compete in the WSC Silver conference tournament earlier this week at Prairie Bluff in Lockport.

The Dukes also learned they will be part of the Class 3A Addison Trail regional at The Preserve at Oak Meadow in Addison on Wednesday, Sept.

“Our kids are playing well and we are looking forward to the next few weeks of the season,” Borel said.

IC Catholic Prep boys golf The IC Catholic Prep boys golf team recorded a recent 147-156 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against St. Francis at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale. Sophomore Zazz Atendido was the medalist with a 1-under par 34. Jan Atendido added a 36, while PJ Wisniewski shot 38. Nick Zanoni and Luke Tardiff each shot 39 to conclude a fine Knights scorecard.

The Knights also scored a 155-177 win over neighbor Timothy Christian at Oak Brook Golf Club. Zanoni was the meet medalist with a 37. Jann Atendido shot 38, while Zazz Atendido and Tardiff each shot 40.

“We circled the St. Francis match before the start of the season,” IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack explained. “They are always very good and we can’t win our conference without going through them. They posted scores of 36 and 37 in their first two groups, but their good play just seemed to motivate our entire team. Jann and Zazz were stellar, but so were their teammates. Everyone’s pushing to contribute and that bodes well for us.

“The Timothy Christian match was good for us on a variety of levels. Two Elmhurst schools where kids know one another and Timothy always plays hard, even in a rebuilding year. When coupled with the fact it was quite windy and with Oak Brook having a lot of water, it was a lot like what we’ll face when the weather changes and the state series begins. We played well enough for a solid win, posting a strong score while again discarding some nice scores.”

The two wins pushed IC Catholic Prep to 7-1 overall in dual meets.

IC Catholic Prep also finished fourth out of 12 teams at the Mundelein invitational at Steeple Chase.

Wisniewski led the Knights with 79.

Jann Atendido added an 81, while Zanoni and Zazz Atendido each shot 85.

“Certainly this is the strongest tournament we’ll play in the season

with Loyola, New Trier, Lake Forest and Mundelein being teams that have high hopes for the postseason,” Sujack pointed out. “That said, with the exception of P.J., our play wasn’t particularly strong. A very tough course playing firm and fast, but we struggled early on, and when we pressed to make something happen, it seemed to backfire on us.”

Timothy Christian boys soccer team off to 4-0 conference start Cruz leading way with 9 goals and 7 assists

Conference play has been good to the Timothy Christian boys soccer team thus far.

The Trojans were off to a 4-0 start in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play and were 7-2-1 through their first 10 games.

“A big team goal of ours is the MSC title, so we are working toward securing that,” Timothy coach Joel Zielke said.

In recent action, the Trojans were 3-2 winners over Ridgewood. Hendrik DeVries, Ethan Munk and Ethan Lemkuil each had goals. Cam Baker and Lemkuil each had an assist.

In a 3-0 win over St. Francis, Baker, Lemkuil and an own goal accounted for the Trojans’ tallies. Baker had two assists, while Chris Cruz had one.

Eddie Favela scored two goals in Timothy’s 5-2 win over Elgin St.

Edward. Jake Firnsin, Jake Alex and Baker each had a goal. Cruz had two assists, while Baker added one assist.

In a 3-2 win over Wheaton Academy that Timothy won 5-4 on penalty kicks, Cruz and Lemkuil each had a goal in regulation.

Through 10 games, Cruz was leading the team with nine goals and seven assists. Lemkuil had five goals and one assist, while Baker had three goals and seven assists. DeVries had three goals and three assists.

Zielke pointed to one commonality in the team’s recent strong play.

“Team chemistry,” he said. “After we lost to IC 1-0, we have done a nice job of regrouping and have become a very tight group. This has seen us through some close matches at Ridgewood to win it in the last minute and to win against Wheaton Academy in penalty kicks after battling back after being down 1-0 and 2-1.”

Zielke added the move of Lemkuil from center mid to center back two weeks ago has paid dividends. “His

leadership and speed has been a huge asset for us on our back line,” he said.

“He also has been heavily involved in free kicks/set piece goals for us.”

The coach said Cruz continues to pick apart defensive back lines “and cause all sorts of problems,” Zielke said. “He is a huge threat with the ball at his feet.”

Cruz scored a goal on a free kick from 20 yards out against Wheaton Academy that tied the game at 1-1.

Baker’s presence has been felt, Zielke added, in the central midfield over the past two weeks as well. “Cam had a huge game against St. Francis (1 goal, 2 assists),” Zielke said.

Peter Buikema and Kyle Steinger have teamed up in goal for the Trojans.

“Peter has played the bulk of the minutes recently,” Zielke said. “He is only a freshman and is doing a nice job in net. Kyle replaced him in the overtime game after an injury and made two saves during the PK shootout to secure the win.”

Knights boys soccer team registers pair of wins

The IC Catholic Prep girls cross country team has made a splash in multiple ways this fall.

The Knights took sixth in the Class 1A division of the recent First to Finish meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria “with a heavy field of 50 teams,” coach Dawn Calcagno noted.

Carly Manchester finished sixth in the First to Finish Class 1A field of almost 500 runners with a time of 18:18. “Carly had a phenomenal race,” Calcagno said.

Manchester also won the Trial on the Trail two-mile varsity race at Elmwood Park in 12:02 and took second in the frosh-soph Trial on the Trail division in 13:04.

Manchester, now a senior, is back this season for the Knights along with fellow senior Kennedy Calcagno, junior Hayden James and sophomores Kelsey McDonough and Megan VanKoughnet.

Key newcomers include senior Julianna Marroquin, a former cheerleader and first-time soccer player this past spring, along with freshman Graziella Narcisi, who also plays basketball and soccer.

Narcisi made her high school three-mile race debut as the top finisher in the frosh-soph field of 262 at the John Kurtz Early Bird invite where she ran 19:39. She also ran a PR at the First to Finish race in Peoria, taking 15th overall in the Class 1A varsity race with a time of 19:15.

“The girls are improving at every practice, tackling some quality workouts,” Calcagno said.

Spaulding ran in the competitive frosh-soph race at the John Kurtz invitational to start the season and took 35th out of 262 runners with a time of 18:55. At First to Finish in Peoria, Spaulding ran 18:25 in the varsity race held on the state finals course.

Castillo ran a personal record in the frosh-soph race at John Kurtz (23:45) and then had an almost identical time at First to Finish in the varsity race. “Charlie is off to a great start,” Calcagno said.

New to running and new members of the IC Catholic Prep boys team are freshman Andrew Alvarado, sophomore Sam Duffy, freshman Dan Duffy and sophomore Nazareth Academy transfer Jonathan Mejino.

Alvarado, a wrestler, ran 21:03 in the frosh-soph race at John Kurtz, which included a mixture of Class 3A teams.

“All our boys are making tremendous improvements at each practice,” Calcagno said. “We are looking forward to seeing them race in the upcoming weeks.”

Elmhurst History Museum staffer Nancy Himmes greeted a visitor who was curious about the raffle prizes available at the 6th annual Craft Beer Fest held on the lawn of the History Museum. It was a nearly perfect day to be outside, listening to music and sampling beers.

These two gentlemen handed out sample to guests from their brewery known as the Haymarket Beer Company. They were one of several craft breweries who came out to share their wares on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Craft Beer Fest.

FFC partners with ‘By The Hand Club’ for 37th anniversary Hosts ‘Wrapped in Love’ donation drive at all locations

The month of September marks Chicagoland-based Fitness Formula Clubs’ (FFC) 37th anniversary.

As part of its month-long celebration, FFC has partnered with “By The Hand Club For Kids” for the “Wrapped in Love” donation drive to collect winter hats, gloves, scarves and mittens, benefitting K-12 school aged children in the underserved areas of Chicago.

The organization provides after-school programs in five Chicago neighborhoods to promote academic excellence, technology-enabled instruction, tutoring, mentorship and spiritual development. For more information, visit bythehand.org.

About the organizer In 2007, an event held in Littleton, Colo., established 178 canine couples as the Guinness World Records title in this light-hearted category. In November 2008, a group in Oak Park attempted to break that record but fell short when only 87 canine couples came together.

Among the participants in that event was

Leslie Allison-Seei, who has unleashed the idea of taking another crack at the mark. In addition to serving as chairperson of the Villa Park Community F.U.N. Commission, Allison-Seei volunteers for several dog organizations and has frequently dressed up as a giant doggy for charity events and parades. In fact, she is recognized around town as The Dogmother of Villa Park. She and her husband, Greg, own Robust Promotions, a Villa Parkbased marketing and promotional company.

The Seeis have a couple of dogs that will be contributing to the overall “puptials.” Allison-Seei, who refers to herself and fellow dog owners as “leash holders,” says that the goal is to attract 500 dogs that will be matched up to break the record with 250 canine couples.

“After the events of the past year, leash holders are practically begging for a reason to come out of their dens and celebrate with their dogs,” said Allison-Seei. “We are also excited about raising money and awareness for these worthy organizations.”

Last week, COVID-19 cases and related hospitalizations were headed in the right direction as decreases are reported across DuPage County.

Still, community transmission remains at a “High” level with a 7-day average of 145 new cases per 100,000 reported, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) encourages residents to continue following the mask guidance, maintain physical distancing, and get vaccinated at the earliest opportunity to prevent further community transmission.

“The decrease in COVID-19 case activity is encouraging and an early sign that the prevention actions we are taking are working,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “I want to thank the municipalities, businesses, schools, community organizations, and residents who have done their part, including the more than 500,000 residents who have been fully vaccinated and all those who continue wearing a mask in indoor public settings. Our message now is for everyone to keep working together to help our community emerge from this pandemic.”

According to the latest CDC COVID-19 vaccination data, DuPage County ranks 218th out

of 3,283 counties, which is in the top 10 percent among U.S. counties with residents fully vaccinated. Currently, 88 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older in DuPage County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 70 percent are fully vaccinated.

Of residents 65 years and older, 99.9 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 85 percent are fully vaccinated.

However, among 12 to 17-year-olds in DuPage County, 77 percent have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and only 58 percent are fully vaccinated.

To help reduce spread in schools and the community, all unvaccinated persons aged 12 years and older are urged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

Currently, people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems are recommended to receive a third dose of a mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Those who believe they are eligible for a third vaccine dose should talk to their healthcare provider. Third-dose vaccinations are available through local pharmacies or healthcare providers and can be given 28 days after receiving the second dose.

The FDA scheduled a meeting with its vaccine advisers Sept. 17 to discuss booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
