Bond set for Elmhurst man charged with videotaping 17-year-old girl

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Friday, Sept. 14, that an Elmhurst man has been charged with Unauthorized Video Recording, a Class 3 Felony, for allegedly videotaping a 17-year-old girl at an Alberto Garcia Elmhurst residence. Alberto Garcia, 34, of 989 N. York Road, appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge Brian Jacobs set his bond at $100,000 with 10 percent to apply.

It is alleged that on Sept. 12, 2018, Garcia secretly positioned his cellular phone in the washroom at the residence in such a manner so that the camera on the phone had a view of the bathroom. It is alleged that after putting the phone in the bathroom, Garcia activated the video record function and exited the bathroom. A short time later, the victim went to the washroom and noticed the phone concealed in the washroom. The victim immediately alerted a trusted adult to what she had found who in turn contacted the police.

“The allegations against Mr. Garcia are, in a word, sickening,” Berlin said. “Invading another person’s privacy in such a revolting manner will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law.

I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their work on this case.”

Garcia’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 9 for arraignment in front of Judge Robert Miller.

York students host Town Hall meeting to discuss gun violence Speakers include survivors from shooting in Parkland

Individuals and organizations interested in eradicating gun violence are invited to a Town Hall meeting on Saturday, Oct. 13 beginning at 6 p.m. at Congregation Etz Chaim, 1710 S. Highland Ave. in Lombard.

The program is being hosted by students at York High School who are committed to eradicating gun vio-

lence in our schools and throughout the country.

“You will be getting a unique perspective from both March For Our Lives student activists and their peers living in Chicago, who deal with gun violence daily,” the invitation read.

Special guests will include Lauren Hogg and Ryan Servaites, survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Brandon Farbstein, member of March for Our Lives and revolutionary empowerment speaker for young people, will also participate.

“With primarily student-led dis-

cussion, we are hoping to get answers from our politicians about what they will do to protect individuals from all walks of life from gun violence,” the students said. “As the date is less than a month before Election day, this is an opportunity for you and anyone else you know to hold them accountable.”

Two discussion panels are expected to include: Deb Conroy, State Rep (D-46); Sean Casten, Democratic candidate for IL 6th Congressional District; Terra Costa Howard, candidate for IL State Rep in the 48th District; March for Our Lives activists;

and Chicago-area youth who deal with gun violence daily. State Senator Chris Nybo (R-24), Congressman Peter Roskam (R-06) and State Rep Deanne Mazzochi (R-47) have been invited but had not confirmed by press time.

During the Stoneman Douglas survivors’ stay in Chicago, they will join Chicago-area students in multiple meetings with candidates and incumbents, establishing gun violence prevention objectives for future policy.

Organizers of the Town Hall hope that any resolutions made at the conclusion of the Oct. 13th meeting will

set a foundation for common sense reforms. All participants will be encouraged to contact their legislators on the issue of gun violence at both state and federal levels. Several elected officials and candidates from both sides of the aisle have been invited to join the panel; many others have committed to attend as audience members.

York Alums finalize Centennial plans

At a meeting held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, the York High School Alumni Association made the final plans for the upcoming York Centennial Celebration. Some plans had to be changed at the last minute, such as the location of the golf outing and the cancellation of the Saturday night dinner, which are indicated in this week’s Community Calendar and on the website.

On Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., homeowners with renewable energy installations, including two in Elmhurst, will open their homes to the public to share their passion, knowledge and experience of owning and living with renewable energy.

The Illinois Solar Energy Association’s (ISEA) Illinois Solar Tour is part of the American Solar Energy Society’s (ASES) National Solar Tour event, “the largest grassroots solar event in history.” More than 160,000 participants will visit some 5,500 buildings in 3,200 communities across the U.S. on tour day.

Homeowners will be available at each site to provide information, share experiences and answer questions.

According to ISEA, Illinois is on the verge of a solar energy boom, thanks to the implementation of new legislation, making the tour a great way to learn about how to take advantage of the opportunities this affords.

Tour attendees will learn: how homeowners are utilizing solar and other clean energies to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and to become energy independent; why individual homeowners chose solar, the process, and lessons learned; how

different clean technologies are used, installed, and work together. Homeowners will also provide information on costs and savings for their solar systems.

The tour is free, and organized like an open house. Attendees choose which homes to visit, how many, and when, within the tour timeframe. Each host site tour will take anywhere from 15-45 minutes, depending on the size of the site and the number of renewable energy installations.

“With price decreases for solar over the last couple of decades, it finally became within reach of our budget to purchase a system,” said Elmhurst homeowner and tour participant Dan Virgil. “It will save us money in the long run. We have essentially prepaid our electricity bill for the next few decades, insulating us from rate increases from the utility company.”

EEH cuts ribbon on new Elmhurst Clinic Center for Health Elmhurst boasts a new jewel in her crown

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, Edward-Elmhurst Health held an official ribbon-cutting and open house for the new Health Center at 172 Schiller St. in Elmhurst. The Center officially opened its doors to patients on Monday, Sept. 17 and will be home to Elmhurst Clinic and Edward-Elmhurst Health Lab Services.

The physicians of Elmhurst Medical Associates, currently located at 183 Addison Ave. in Elmhurst, will move to the 172 Schiller St. location and begin providing services on Dec. 31.

Elmhurst Clinic physicians at the new Center specialize in allergies, cardiology, dermatology, family medicine and internal medicine. In addition, Elmhurst Clinic provides a Coumadin Clinic at the location. For more information, visit EEHealth. org/schiller.

He recalled when the original clinic was built and that he was among the first doctors to practice there. His son Mark Hoffman is now an administrator for Elmhurst Hospital.

“The location turns out to be great, especially for seniors,” the younger Hoffman said. “It’s right downtown, across from the Jewel where they often like to shop and the Osco, where they can obtain their prescriptions.

We’re glad the new location is virtually on the same site.”

While attending the open house of the new Elmhurst Clinic and Health Lab Services Center, the Independent was able to catch up with Dr. Elio J. Fornatto, one of the last surviving doctors from the 1950s. Dr. Fornatto, now 90, joined the clinic in 1958.

“They needed an ear, nose and throat specialist so they asked me to found the department,” Dr. Fornatto said. “I worked there for 43 years, retiring in 2001.”

The doctor recalled when the building was only one story with a basement. He credited Dr. Edmund Droegemiller, who spent his career at Elmhurst Clinic, with developing what he called the “secondary tier of medicine,” referring to specialists such as himself.

“Dr. Droegemiller insisted that each doctor be certified in his specialty,” Fornatto said. “He put up the money for the land and the buildings and sold shares.

“And he was such a nice fellow.

When I came to the clinic, I met all the doctors and he called me over and said he wanted me to spend some time with him, so he took me to Louis’ Restaurant for dinner. I was very impressed with him and after spending a few hours with him, apparently he was impressed with me, too. So he made me an offer to come to the Clinic.

“He was a man who ‘put his money where his mouth was,’ he didn’t just talk about things, he got things done. The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement Sept. 6-Sept. 7 Police said an agent for a victim’s company in the 300 block of W. Lake told police at around 9:41 a.m. that an unknown suspect damaged a semi-trailer by spray painting graffiti markings on the side of the trailer while it was parked overnight in the parking lot. The victim reports the same trailer was vandalized in the same manner six months ago.

Child endangerment

Sept. 6 Police said officers responded to the above location for the report of an unattended 1-yearold child left sleeping in a vehicle. The reporting officer located the child who was secured in a child safety seat in the rear passenger side.

Officers were able to locate the child’s mother who stated she did not want to wake the child, according to police. The mother, Cristina Filipa, 31, of Addison, was charged with child endangerment.

Disorderly conduct

Sept. 9 Police said officers responded for a complaint of an intoxicated person on the complainant’s front porch in the 800 block of Washington at around 6:25 a.m. The suspect, Daniel Sullivan, 27, of New Lenox, was located near a school, according to police. Sullivan was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication.

Sept. 8 Police said officers responded to the 500 block of N. York at around 5:10 p.m. for the report of a man lying in the parking lot. Officers located Robert Baldwin, 68, of Elmhurst, and found him to be intoxicated, according to police. He was issued a citation for public intoxication.

Sept. 7 Darla A. Figved, 51, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication near Prospect and Van Buren at around 10:43 p.m.

Police said school resource officers at York High School responded to the school cafeteria at around 1:33 p.m. for a report of a fight that had just occurred. A reporting officer made contact with both juveniles. One of the juveniles was issued citations for disorderly conduct and possession of alternative nicotine products. The other juvenile was issued a citation for disorderly conduct. Both juveniles were released to their parents.

Sept. 6 Police said officers were advised of a fight in progress in the school cafeteria at York High School at around 1:10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located the two who were involved in a physical fight during their lunch period. Each was cited for disorderly conduct and their respective parents were notified.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance

Sept. 13 Police said that upon arrival in the 1-100 block of St. Regis Court at around 3:34 a.m., a victim told police she got into a verbal argument with her husband over her coming home late. She stated he allegedly pushed her off the bed and she slapped his chest. The suspect stated after a verbal argument, the victim allegedly slapped him and he locked her out of the bedroom when she then kicked the door in. No injuries were observed and the suspect left the residence for the day.

Sept. 12 A 23-year-old Rockford woman was charged with domestic battery, while a 27-year-old Oswego man was charged with obstructing identification in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 1:37 a.m. Police said that Upon arrival, it was learned that the woman struck her boyfriend in the face while he was sleeping after looking through his cell phone. Her boyfriend gave a false name and was found to have a valid warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, according to police.

Sept. 8 A 42-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 1:05 a.m. Police said a witness confirmed that a battery occurred whereby the suspect choked and pulled the victim’s hair.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Sept. 10 Jeremy Falagario, 26, and Michael A. Landando, 28, both of Chicago, were charged with illegal transportation of open alcohol, while Joseph Scott Stefan, 24, and Stephen D. Sapp, 25, both of Chicago, were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Myrtle at around 7:22 p.m.

Sept. 9 Daniel Defily, 32, of Lombard, was charged with DUI drugs and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Riverside at around 12:28 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 2:46 a.m., Samantha Ocampo, 19, of Berwyn, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to have consumed alcohol and was under the age of 21. She was issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Sept. 8 Jeremy L. Hansen, 41, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for public intoxication in the 200 block of E. Third at around 2:10 a.m. Police said officers responded to the above location

for Hansen, who was allegedly passed out on the sidewalk. Officers located Hansen who was found to be intoxicated and sustained an abrasion to his right foot, according to police.

Police said that subsequent to a DUI following call, a vehicle was located and stopped near Bensenville at Church and McLean at around 2:57 a.m. The allegedly vehicle fled from the traffic stop and was eventually located in Bensenville. Jesse C. Ingram, 20, of Bensenville, was taken into custody and transported to the police station. He was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor, obstructing a police officer, driving while license suspended, improper lane usage and no insurance. Police said Ingram also was found to be wanted out of DuPage County.

Raymond Quinones, 43, of Hanover Park, was charged with DUI, injuring city property, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane usage subsequent to a single car crash investigation in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 6:11 a.m.

Sept. 11 A reporting officer near York and St. Charles located two vehicles at around 4:11 a.m. which were previously dispatched on ISPERN as wanted for fleeing and eluding/sighting of a stolen vehicle. Both vehicles fled entering eastbound I-290 from North Avenue.

Sept.9 Police said that while on patrol near North and Melrose at around 4:15 a.m., a reporting officer conducted a registration check on a Ford Explorer, which returned with a stolen vehicle hit out of Niles. Upon attempting to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, eastbound on I-290 from North Avenue.

Officers also attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Lexus which was traveling with the Ford Explorer. That vehicle also fled at a high rate of speed and was found to be a freshly stolen vehicle out of Glenview.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Sept. 13 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Highland at around 1:53 a.m., Charles Richmond, 28, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of cannabis and open alcohol. He was issued citations for illegal transportation of alcohol by a passenger, possession of cannabis and no seat belt.

Sept. 10 Wilfrido Manjarrez, 30, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, speeding and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at around 2:57 a.m.

Police said officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 500 block of E. Park at around 7:22 a.m. Prior to the officers’ arrival, police said the suspect, Scott Muehring, 43, of Elmhurst, left the residence. A subsequent investigation revealed a domestic argument had escalated to both parties pushing each other, according to police. The victim advised officers Muehring was known to keep cannabis in the house, police said. During a consent search of the residence, police said officers located cannabis and a scale. According to police, Muehring admitted to ownership of the contraband.

He came into the police station and was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Aug. 21-Sept. 8 A victim in the 600 block of Armitage told police at around 11:24 a.m. they are the owner of an unoccupied house. The victim reports receiving mailings addressed to unknown suspects. The mailings are from the Illinois Secretary of State, Selective Service System, and a company. A neighbor of the victim reported seeing the driver of a white sedan removing mail from the mailbox on several occasions.

Maple told police at around 7:23 p.m. she received a voicemail from a subject claiming to be a Lieutenant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office who stated she had warrants out for her arrest for a missed jury summons. The victim made contact with the subject who said she would need to go to the DuPage County Courthouse to clear it up and she could “speed things up” if she made a payment using a Green Dot Money Pak prepaid card. The victim purchased the card and provided the suspect with the numbers on the card. The victim will attempt to stop the transaction.

Sept. 10 Rhonda M. Thomas, 55, of Hillside, was charged with two counts of retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 4:02 p.m. Police said Thomas exited the store with $1,018.25 worth of stolen merchandise.

Sept. 9 A victim in the 100 block of E. North End told police at around 8:30 p.m. that he lost his cell phone and used an application to find it.

The application showed the phone in Franklin Park. An officer responded to the area in an attempt to locate the phone and was met with no results.

Sept. 8 Forgery was reported in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 8:40 a.m. A victim told police that a suspect attempted to pay for merchandise with a suspected counterfeit bill. Officers responded to the scene. The suspect was detained and transported to the police station.

House bills focus on veterans issues Cullerton proud of bi-partisan cooperative efforts

The Senate’s Veterans Affairs Committee has passed a series of measures this legislative session that are now law in Illinois.

“We tackled a series of important issues this year to ensure our state meets the growing needs of our nation’s heroes,” Veterans Committee Chairman Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) said in a press release. “Our service men and women put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. It’s vital that we work in a bipartisan manner to pass meaningful laws that pay tribute to their countless sacrifices.”

The following legislation passed the Senate’s Committee on Veterans Affairs and is now law: • Senate Bill 3128: Gives the Capital Development Board and the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs authority to address the public health crisis at the Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy.

This is one of many measures Cullerton pushed to help save veteran lives by speeding up construction and repairs at the Quincy facility.

“Our U.S. servicemen and women should not live in harm’s way because of the governor’s incompetence,” he said. “It’s the state’s job to ensure Illinois’ heroes are able to live

their golden years in a safe environment with the best possible care.”

• Senate Bill 3192: The governor annually designates, by official proclamation, the day before Gold Star Mother’s Day as Gold Star Family Day. • House Bill 4278: Requires an Illinois Veterans Home to notify facility residents and their emergency contacts within 24 hours if two or more residents in the home have been diagnosed with an infectious disease in period of one month or less.

• House Bill 4317: Allows family members of armed service members killed in action to terminate a lease.

• House Bill 5784: Requires the Department of Veterans’ Affairs to submit a quarterly report to the general assembly about the health and welfare of the residents as well as any information on an epidemic or cases involving a communicable disease at each state-run veterans home.

“It is our duty to protect the health and well-being of our veterans,” Cullerton said. “I will continue to fight for commonsense measures that honor our military personnel. These new laws serve as a small token of appreciation for our heroes’ service and sacrifices.”

Public hearing on Draft Subarea Plans to be held Oct. 2 The City of Elmhurst Zoning and Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to consider the City’s Draft Subarea Plans on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at City Hall, 209 N. York Street, at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend and provide input.

The City of Elmhurst’s Comprehensive Plan (adopted in 2009) contains nine subareas. Recently, the city reviewed these subareas and determined that five should be updated.

The Subarea Plans assist decision makers in how best to provide services, direct growth, and maintain infrastructure for these areas.

The City began the initial planning phases for the Subarea Plans in April 2017, focusing on five key areas: • Lake Street, west of York Street

• The intersection of North Avenue and Route 83; • The block northwest of the First and York street intersection; • The blocks surrounding the intersection of York and Vallette streets; and • The district bounded by Butterfield Road, Roosevelt Road, and York Street.

The five subareas studied are unique and warrant specific recommendations tailored to the special circumstances surrounding the area.

A visioning workshop on the Subarea Plan was held on August 29, 2017, followed by an Open House introducing the draft Subarea Plans on May 2, 2018.

The input gathered at these events

was compiled, reviewed and is included in the plans.

“The subarea planning approach guides growth and redevelopment to ensure that future regulatory changes and capital improvements align with the vision of the community and stakeholders,” said Eileen Franz, City Planner for the City of Elmhurst.

The final Elmhurst Subarea Plans will include recommendations for land use, transportation, infrastructure, character, and sense of place for each district.

They will then be sent for review to the City Council with a recommendation from the Elmhurst Zoning and Planning Commission (ZPC).

Resident clarifies information about Spring Road depot I understand that I am not the first to question your identification of railroad stations here in town. I’m talking about the Chamber of Commerce issue. First, the wooden depot was always exactly where it now stands. It was part of the Great Western Line, which ran parallel to the Aurora and Elgin through Elmhurst.

It is not part of the Prairie Path, though the two entities are parallel.

Our Park District acquired the railroad property at about the same time as the Prairie Path was conceived and then restored and upgraded it to its present state. That rail line discontinued its service which was just Chicago to Iowa and in the 50’s and 60’s ran just one train each way each day.

The lannon stone station was certainly CA&E but it may have been at Poplar rather than Spring. The hazy

background is difficult. The Poplar station, which housed a convenience store, became a prop studio for the long-gone Elmhurst Theatre company. Vandals set fire to it and it was demolished.

My original house in Elmhurst backed up to all of these properties at Poplar so I was familiar with these sights and the subsequent changes.

Dr. Fornatto believes he was able to garner an invitation to the United States because he spoke English very well and because he had written several medical summaries – some so good, other doctors took credit for writing them! On one of his original works, Dr. Fornatto is listed fourth on the list of authors.

Nowadays, Dr. Fornatto and his wife Mary do a great deal of traveling including back to his hometown of Torino and other fascinating places like St. Petersburg, Istanbul and several others.

Dr. Fornatto is definitely part of what makes Elmhurst a good place to live and work and it’s not a terrible place to be if you happen to fall ill.

District 205 Board discusses test exemption for graduating seniors

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on Sept. 11 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting.

Mary Henderson, the district’s associate superintendent for learning and leadership development, delivered a presentation during the meeting that recapped the startup activities going into the current school year.

She noted an administrator retreat in early August that featured all of the district’s administrators and principals.

The meeting also included a discussion about extending the opportunity to York High School seniors to be exempt from exams in their spring semester prior to graduation. The exemption could be effective in the spring of 2019. Students could still take the exams if they chose to do so.

Ryan Doherty, York’s assistant principal for curriculum and instruction, gave a presentation to the board.

Doherty researched the policies of several other schools regarding second semester exams for seniors.

Some schools do not require seniors

to take any exams during their final semester. Doherty reached out to York teachers and proposed criteria for allowing seniors to be exempted from exams. Those criteria included no behavior consequences, no parking violations, not more than four missing assignments and no more than three unexcused absences.

Other district officials, as well as board members, noted that final exams are becoming less common, and that one 90-minute final exam at the end of the year does not necessarily equate to academic development.

Board members supported the concept of exam exemptions for second semester seniors. Chris Blum said he would like the district to require a minimal level of achievement, such as a C grade, to allow for an exemption. Jim Collins said he didn’t think the district needed an academic component. He said putting students through another round of exams after eight semesters would not have much of an impact on them.

Superintendent David Moyer said district staff will return to the board in October with a follow-up about the proposal to exempt seniors from second semester exams.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on Sept. 25.

Park Board capsules Here’s what’s happening at the Elmhurst Park District

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on September 10 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. All seven board members attended the meeting, with Commissioner Doug Ennis participating via telephone.

Five residents spoke during the public participation segment at the beginning of the meeting. The residents urged the board to consider going pesticide-free. The district

More talk about registration software The meeting included a discussion about the district’s registration software—RecTrac—from Vermont Systems, Inc. (VSI). The system ran at an unacceptably slow rate of speed during registrations in February and August. According to the district, it is now readily apparent that VSI is not currently capable of meeting the needs of the Elmhurst community. The district is working to identify a different way to process the first day of registration.

Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers stated during the meeting that the district is reaching out to other park districts to learn how they handle the first day of registration. Rogers also said that several residents have suggested staggering registration dates for different programs. Rogers said the district continues to seek feedback from the community. The district, he said, is also drafting a message to the community about the issue.

The board discussed its potential options for the property at a meeting in April. Funds for final engineering at Sugar Creek approved Board members voted unanimously during the meeting to approve spending $60,000 for final engineering services for the restoration of Sugar Creek—the body of water that runs through the Sugar Creek Golf Course, which is jointly owned by the district and the Village of Villa Park.

According to the district, the creek has been affected by several problems, including shoreline erosion, sediment deposit accumulations, degraded water quality, carp populations and algae bloom. The shoreline retention wall is also failing in many areas.

Additionally, the creek serves

as an irrigation source to the golf course, which opened in 1975. Failing to address the creek’s current problems could result in the need to pay for irrigation.

The total cost for restoration of the creek is expected to be about $1.5 million. There are reportedly grant opportunities that could potentially fund a large portion of the cost.

The total cost for engineering services with Living Waters Consultants, Inc. is $120,000. The district’s portion of that fee would be half of that amount—$60,000. Rogers said the Village of Villa Park is on board conceptually with the plan to obtain the engineering services, and to pursue grant opportunities.

Election in 2019 coming soon Near the end of the meeting, Rogers noted that packets are available for residents interested in running for the two seats available on the board in the election of April 2, 2019.

The six-year terms of Spaeth and Commissioner Patricia Morissette-Moll expire next year.

The board will hold its next meeting on Sept. 24.

Join Senior Helpers at the Walk To End Alzheimer’s You can join the Senior Helpers Team on Saturday, September 22.

In the United States, every 65 seconds someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and more than five million Americans have the disease—and 2/3 of them are women.

To help stamp out this devastating disease, the Senior Helpers office in Oak Brook is participating in the

Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The walk will take place at Busse Woods (Groves 28-30) in Elk Grove Village. Although registration is at 8 a.m., you may sign up in advance with the Senior Helpers office to be part of their team. Call the Oak Brook Office at 630-359-5775 to register. The walk starts at 10 a.m. and is 3.2 miles.

The Flower Garden Ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. Participants come together

to make a commitment to fulfill their promise to remember, to honor, to care and to fight Alzheimer’s disease. On Walk Day, walkers have an opportunity to receive a promise flower and write a personal message on it to strengthen their dedication.

Each color blue, purple, yellow and orange stands for the reason someone is participating.

“The goal of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is to raise money for

research, find a cure to end Alzheimer’s and to raise awareness for this disease,” said Director of Operations Mary O’Connor at the Senior Helpers Oak Brook office.

“The Walk to End Alzheimer’s began in 1989. Today, more than 600 communities participate in this event,” O’Connor added.

For those choosing to begin sobriety with the help of Linden Oaks’ MAT Clinic, services are available without a physician’s order to anyone who wants to begin the process of change. A patient can start at the clinic, or move there after an inpatient, residential or outpatient treatment program.

“You might experience bad flu-like symptoms, such as muscle aches and fatigue,” says Aaron Weiner, PhD, Director of Addiction Services at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health in Naperville.

“There are ways of managing these symptoms. Although withdrawal from opioids can’t kill you, it can be extremely unpleasant, stopping many from wanting to move forward towards health.”

The first option, ongoing medicationassisted therapy, can be initiated either in an inpatient or outpatient environment. Some addiction programs administer methadone, but at the Linden Oaks Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) Clinic, patients receive Suboxone, which is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone, which is used to reverse overdoses.

“Buprenorphine is less sedating than methadone and easier than methadone to taper off from when the person is ready to stay sober without any pharmaceutical assistance,” says Dr. Weiner.

According to the Merck Manual Consumer Version, “In many countries, buprenorphine has replaced methadone in detoxification programs.”

Linden Oaks’ MAT Clinic also features medical supervision, regular drug testing and group therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy, a key approach used in the group sessions, helps patients challenge negative patterns of thought that lead to unwanted consequences, such as acting on cravings.

A second option is short-term management of withdrawal symptoms while the body rids itself of opioids. As is the case with MAT, this approach is followed by counseling and other longterm support. For those choosing this option, Linden Oaks eases withdrawal symptoms in the medically monitored inpatient detoxification unit. There, under the care of a psychiatrist and other Linden Oaks addiction specialists, support, monitoring and medications for specific symptoms, such as anti-nausea pills, are provided.

Says Dr. Weiner, “This approach can work for some, especially if they’ve only been using opioids for a short time.

Powerful drama ‘Diary of Out and Anne Frank’ coming to GMTT their two years of hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic.

Goodrich and Hackett were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for drama, and the original 1955 production won the Tony Award for best play. Kesselman’s 1997 adaptation was nominated for a Tony Award for best revival of a play. The Diary of Anne Frank opens September 28 and runs three weekends at GreenMan’s performance space in Elmhurst at 232 S. York St. The play takes us to July 1942, when Anne Frank and her family went into hiding in Amsterdam with another family. Soon they are joined by a Jewish dentist, also seeking safety from the Nazis. For over two years, the eight survive with the help of Otto Frank’s business associates, who bring supplies and news of the war.

As the annex residents wait for liberation from the Americans and the British, Anne records the events of their daily lives in her diary. As the war drags on and circumstances become more desperate, their claustrophobic existence begins to strain relationships and test their fortitude.

Cronin: ‘Project … important piece of our regional flood control approach Officials celebrate completion of flood control project near Salt Creek

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, federal, state and local officials came together to celebrate the completion of the Graue Mill Flood Control Project in Hinsdale. The project was a collaborative effort between DuPage County, the Village of Hinsdale, the Graue Mill Homeowners Association and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County to protect the area from repetitive flooding. DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin highlighted the need for the project.

“In a span of only five years, Graue Mill endured three significant flood events,” Cronin said. “It was after the April 2013 flood that DuPage began working with all of the project partners to come up with a solution. The Graue Mill project became an important piece of our regional flood control approach, and we really couldn’t have done it without our federal, state and local partners.”

The project addresses repetitive flooding within the Graue Mill neighborhood, adjacent to Salt Creek. The project included construction of floodgates, floodwalls, pump stations and berms, as well as storm sewer improvements and compensatory floodwater storage in nearby Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve. $2.5 million federal funds available U.S. Congressman Mike Quigley helped

secure more than $2.5 million in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to get the project off the ground.

“This is a remarkable community,” said Quigley. “The men and women of Graue Mill took it upon themselves to doggedly peruse creative solutions to the flooding problems that have repeatedly threatened their lives and property. As their representative in congress, I’m proud to have marshalled the federal resources needed to support their work.

The Graue Mill flood abatement project is a prime example of the collaboration at the state, local and federal levels that will be crucial to address the mounting challenges of a changing climate.”

More than $600,000 comes from IDNR In addition to the FEMA and Illinois Emergency Management Agency grant, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources provided a $626,000 grant, which was secured in part by former State Rep. Patti Bellock. The Village of Hinsdale, Graue Mill Homeowners Association, DuPage County Stormwater Management and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provided the remaining local and in-kind matches.

On the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, Visitation’s 6th grade classes walked to the Elmhurst Fire Station to pay their respects to firefighters and other first responders who gave their lives on that day. York girls golf team defeats Willowbrook Sutter shoots 38 against Hinsdale Central, LaBounty 77 at Batavia for Dukes boys golfers

The York girls golf team recorded a recent West Suburban Conference victory against Willowbrook at Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

Bella Bartolone was the meet medalist with a 39. Audrey Matias had a 41, while Lauren Keith had a 42 and Cassie Sika shot a 44.

York’s junior-varsity team also was victorious. Julia Filosa and Bridget Lingren tied for medalist honors with 44s. Jenna Hughes added a 47 and Ellie Wiygul’s score also counted for the Dukes.

In other recent action, the Dukes’ JV team was a winner against Wheaton-Warrenville South at Sugar Creek.

Filosa and Macy Fries tied for medalist honors. Both shot 43. Lauren Keith and Wiygul each shot 46.

The Dukes also dropped a WSC decision to Hinsdale Central at

Ruth Lake Country Club. Bartolone and Matias each shot 47, while Elle Borchardt shot 48. Sika finished with a 51.

The Dukes JV team lost for the first time this season by only three strokes to Hinsdale Central at Green Meadows.

Lauren Keith was the medalist with a 36. Camille Steadly and Fries each shot 44 and Hughes finished with a 46, as did Emily Thomas.

Through late last week, LaBounty was leading the way with a 38.3 average for nine holes. Bartolone and Mann both were at 39.9, while Sutter was averaging 40.2, Buckley 40.4 and Wit 40.5.

The IC Catholic Prep football team remained undefeated after a close 21-20 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Bishop McNamara in Elmhurst.

The win put the Knights at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in MSC Blue action.

Quarterback Khalil Saunders completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. He had a long pass of 60 yards.

IC Catholic Prep ran for 187 yards as a team on 45 carries (4.2 yards per carry). Sophomore Kyle Franklin led the way. He ran 33 times for 134 yards and scored a touchdown. Saunders ran 10 times for 46 yards.

Saunders completed passes to six different receivers. Jacob Lytton caught five passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Sean Hipskind caught three passes for 21 yards and a touchdown. Franklin had two catches for 29 yards, while Ryan Malek caught two passes for nine yards. Jalen Bates and Corties Draper each caught a pass.

The Knights fumbled three times and lost two.

On defense, Kevin Cooke led the way with 22 total tackles. Kemon Reese made 14 tackles, while Dominick Krepulec had 13 tackles.

Ricky Mysliwiec had eight tackles and Saunders had seven tackles.

Lytton, Reese and Mysliwiec each had a tackle for loss. Hipskind had one interception. Steven Crady and Cooke each caused a fumble, while Kevin Akins recovered a fumble.

Crady returned three kickoffs for 85 yards and had a long kickoff return of 36 yards. Tom Sloan kicked three extra points.

York football The York football team lost to perennial state power Glenbard West by a 45-24 count. York dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play in a game played at Clarence D. East Field in Elmhurst.

Glenbard West led 14-0 after the first quarter and 24-0 at halftime.

Quarterback Daniel Dunn completed 26 of 31 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns for York.

The Dukes were limited to 87 yards on 24 carries on the ground (3.6 yards per carry). Joe Javorek had 32 yards on three carries, while KeVon Robinson ran eight times for 27 yards and scored a touchdown.

Joe Orrico caught nine passes for 44 yards and a touchdown, while Antonio Munoz had six catches for 44 yards. Owen Pechous had five catches for 24 yards and a touchdown.

York also scored six points via three two-point conversion passes.

Pechous had two of those and Munoz the third.

When you make it to the championship round in five of seven flights at a tennis invite, good things tend to happen.

The York girls tennis team did just that recently and walked away with the championship at the Buffalo Grove invitational that featured eight teams.

York won the tournament for the second year in a row.

In making it to the championship round in five of the seven flights, the Dukes won four of those contests.

York coach Tres Heimann also pointed out his squad won five of six super tiebreakers it was involved in during the competition.

“The girls played very consistent tennis,” he said. “They were really able to dig in during a lot of those close matches and find a way to prevail.”

York won the tournament with 44 points. Libertyville was second with 39 points.

At the No. 1 singles flight, Melissa Cartis took fifth place. She won her second match by a score of 6-2, 6-0 and then defeated a player from Lake Zurich 6-3, 6-2 in the fifth-place contest.

Gianna Nikoleit won the No. 2 singles flight. She was a 6-2, 6-1 winner against Libertyville in the opener and

then won 6-0, 6-4 over Warren in the semifinals. She scored a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hersey in the finale at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Gabby Felder won the title with a 3-0 mark. She won her first match 6-3, 6-1 against Buffalo Grove and then was a 4-6, 6-2, (10-6) winner in the semifinals against Libertyville. Felder won the title with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Maine South.

In doubles, Aleksina Jovic and Eva Jacobsthal won the No. 1 flight.

They downed Maine South 6-1, 6-1 and then scored a 4-6, 6-2, (10-6) win against Warren in the semifinals before winning the title by a 6-2, 6-2 count.

At No. 2 doubles, Cristina Gamboa and Rachel Kayman finished second. They were 6-0, 6-2 winners in the opener against Lake Zurich and then won 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals against Maine South before dropping a three-setter to Warren in the title match (6-4, 3-6, (10-6)).

At No. 3 doubles, Natalie Krauter and Annalise Soldano won the championship with a 3-0 mark. They won 7-5, 6-4 against Buffalo Grove in the opener and scored a 6-2, 6-1 win against Warren in the semifinals.

They were 3-6, 6-4, (12-10) winners against Libertyville in the finale.

The Timothy Christian girls volleyball team continued its strong start to the season with a pair of wins over two familiar faces.

The Trojans scored wins over former Metro Suburban Conference division mates Ridgewood and Elmwood Park in now MSC crossover play.

In a 25-18, 25-16 victory over Ridgewood, Heidi Westra had seven kills, seven assists and four digs.

Abygale Ahn had 12 digs and two aces, while Greta Hoogstra had four kills and five blocks. Hannah Schuringa had five kills and two blocks, while Campbell Marshall had 11 assists.

Timothy moved to 9-2 overall with a 25-8, 25-9 victory over Elmwood Park. Westra had five kills, nine assists and two aces. Ahn had four digs and two kills, while Lindsay Mahler had five kills. Maggie Troxel had one kill, three aces and two digs. Marshall finished with eight assists and one ace.

returns senior Jack Rhiner, along with juniors Alex Marshall, Jason Grane and AJ Vos, along with sophomores Kyle Mahler and Matija Marinkovich. Rhiner was a top-10 all-conference golfer from a year ago.

A key newcomer to the team is senior James Shervheim. Coach Jeff Vander Naald also lauded the efforts of assistant coach Jami Brighty.

Vander Naald said Rhiner, Grane, Mitchell and Mahler all are key players to keep an eye on, “because they’ve shown steady improvement since the start of the season,” he said.

Through early last week, Rhiner and Grane were leading the team in scoring average, carrying numbers in the mid- to low 40s. “They have the potential to shoot even lower,” said Vander Naald.

Timothy recently went through a busy stretch of the schedule with matches against Montini at home, along with away bouts at Guerin Prep and Lisle and the Aurora Central Catholic Varsity Invitational held at Phillips Park in Aurora.

Vander Naald noted Phillips is the same course that will host the MSC tournament later this season.

“Our goal for the season is to win conference, make it to the state tournament and continue to use our God-given talents to glorify and honor Him,” Vander Naald said.

IC Catholic Prep golf team seeing improvements Knights girls volleyball team defeats Guerin Prep

The IC Catholic Prep boys golf team was on the winning end of a pair of dual matches against Metro Suburban Conference opponents.

In a 171-177 win against Elgin St. Edward at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale, Thomas Hilgart was the meet medalist with a 41. Shane Rollins and Michael Hilgart each shot 43, while Louis Narcisi had a 44.

The Knights then headed to Oak Park Country Club where they defeated Elmwood Park by a 178-187 count. Thomas Hilgart was IC Catholic Prep’s team medalist with a 40.

Rollins shot 43, while Narcisi and Michael Carpanzano each shot 48s.

The two wins pushed the Knights to 4-4 in dual matches.

“Monday’s match (against St. Edward) was fine,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack. “We beat a team I somewhat expected to, but our scores could have been better.

Wednesday (against Elmwood Park) was fun. We got to play at Oak Park Country Club. However, the rough hadn’t been mowed in a week with all the rain and Elmwood Park’s Kevin Godlewski fired a four-under 32 that had us chasing all day. That 32 was as impressive as anything we’ve seen in a long time, but Thomas and Shane posted some nice numbers themselves and we nipped them in a close one.”

While the York girls swimming team dropped a recent 113-72 West Suburban Conference Silver Division decision to Oak Park-River Forest, coach Jeff Skalon came away encouraged.

“OPRF is a good team and we know everybody is good in our conference,” he said. “They had some really strong swimmers, but we did really well. We swam up a freshman and two sophomores and we’ve had some juniors step up as well. We are a young squad, but we also have some older seniors who are doing a nice job helping develop our younger talent.”

Skalon said the Dukes have received recent boosts from the likes of co-captain Delaney Tase (senior), along with juniors Amanda Polach and Nicole DeMare, as well as senior Nicole Bednarik. Bednarik is an IM and breaststroke swimmer, while De-

“Delaney Tase has stepped up in a big way inside and outside the pool,” said Skalon. “Amanda, Nicole DeMare and Nicole Bednarik also have been great.”

Skalon also is excited about the team’s relay prospects. He noted York swam 3:49 against OPRF in the 400, 1:56 in the 200 and 1:57 in the medley relay.

“Right now we’re doing alright in the relays,” he said. “I think we should be good. We’re looking at the possibility of trying to get into state in any one of those relays. It’s up to the girls.”

Overall, Skalon likes where things are headed with this year’s group.

“We have leadership in place that is very positive and has created a positive culture,” he said. “We want them to feel like it’s OK to burn out trying to do your best for the team. Sometimes swimmers have the mentality

“Cassandra and Abygale are close to unbeatable again this year,” said Timothy Christian coach Keith Mills. “They have been playing with different partners at first doubles and raising the level of their teammates’ game.”

Timothy was 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division action through late last week.

Mills has been pleased with the progress his doubles roster has been making. “We’re beginning to become more aggressive doubles players and take some risks to win points,” he said.

On the doubles front Abby and Sarah Carstensen have taken steps forward in recent times. Abby Carstensen is a senior and Sarah Carstensen is a sophomore.

“Abby and Sarah have shown solid doubles improvement play in the last week,” said Mills.

The coach added the team has had an issue with focusing through both sets in a match, but that has improved of late. He also noted the team is hard at work at ending points quicker.

“The season has started very much as I had expected,” he said. “Our inexperience at the bottom of the lineup has caused a struggle to close out matches. Twice we were tied 2-2 in team score with third doubles going to third-set tiebreaker and could not close out the opponent. We could easily be 6-1 at this point.”

Mills noted he’s started four sophomores in several matches due to illnesses.

Timothy was scheduled to play town neighbor IC Catholic Prep earlier this week and will head to Aurora to face Rosary today.

By George Eaton In summer 1814, skirmishes between the U.S. and British-backed warriors under the leadership of Black Hawk flared up and down river from Rock Island.

Since 1803, the U.S. had owned both banks of the Mississippi River. Lt. Zebulon Pike had reached the Rock Island in 1805 and immediately recognized its strategic and tactical importance. The Rock Island Rapids raced for 12 miles upriver. From Rock Island, the Army could control the entire Upper Mississippi River Valley by controlling the rapids.

Locally, the Sauk and Meskwaki, led by Black Hawk, opposed a disputed 1804 treaty that transferred over 50 million acres of land to the U.S. An Army post on the island could also keep an eye on Black Hawk and his followers.

The battles of 1814 confirmed to the Army that it needed a presence on Rock Island. In May 1816, Fort Armstrong was built on the downriver end of the island. The small Army contingent there was tasked to control the Upper Mississippi River Valley by monitoring the Rock Island Rapids; maintaining observation of assumed anti-American Sauk Indians in the area; maintaining peaceful relations between the local Native American

tribes; and, later, providing security as settlers moved into the area.

Resistance from the Sauk culminated in the Black Hawk War of 1832.

Fort Armstrong served as an administrative and logistic center for the war. Treaties after the Black Hawk War pushed Native Americans west of the Mississippi and, as a result, Fort Armstrong’s security role was transformed into a logistics mission as a supply depot. That role ended in 1845 after supplies were issued for the Mexican War. Important meetings were held in George Davenport’s home in 1845.

Not a single bridge crossed the Mississippi River and Rock Island was the only location where engineering of the day could build a commercially viable railroad bridge.

The bridge could jump from the Illinois mainland to the island and then over the shallow rapids to Iowa.

overcoming resistance from the federal government, the first rail bridge over the Mississippi River opened in April 1856 spurring industrial and settlement growth in the area. Rock Island, using water and rail, became the transportation hub of the United States. Eventually, the Transcontinental Railroad crossed the island.

In the late 1850s the Army was looking for a depot to supply the Army on the frontier.

The bridge and rail distribution network, coupled with steamboat traffic and federal ownership of the Rock Island, influenced the decision to create the Rock Island Arsenal.

President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating the Arsenal as a maintenance and storage facility on July 11, 1862. In 1863, construction started on a warehouse that is now called the Clock Tower.

That building was not completed until 1867 and by then the mission had changed to manufacturing. With the end of the Civil War, plans were drawn up by Brevet Brigadier Gen. Thomas Rodman for a much larger complex. Construction began in 1866.

That construction was an economic driver as Rock Island Arsenal became the largest federal public works project of the 19th century. The Arsenal produced artillery carriages and caissons, saddles, eating utensils, canvas products, bayonets, and, after 1903, rifles. It manufactured, repaired and stored everything a soldier needed.

The Arsenal’s first major support to an American war was in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Rock Island Arsenal became known for both speed and quality. As a result, it became the artillery development center for the Army.

During World War I, the Arsenal’s employment mushroomed from 2,000 to almost 15,000. After World War I, the Arsenal became the Army’s tank development center as well.

During World War II, the Arsenal saw its greatest employment with almost 19,000 people on the island. A huge repair parts operation utilized the rail links east and west to the coasts. In addition, machine guns, artillery, tanks, aircraft engines and other goods were produced and sent to the fighting fronts.

The Arsenal was also critical to support in the Korean and Vietnam wars. As the size of the Army and the requirement for manufacturing declined, other higher commands were located on the island. Today 1st Army, Army Sustainment Command, Joint Munitions Command and the Arsenal itself operate on the island.

Today, the Arsenal more quietly continues to support the Army. In 1990-91 critical parts were made and shipped to support Operation Desert Storm. In 2003, when opposing forces began to ambush U.S. vehicles with roadside bombs, the Arsenal produced the first professional armor kits for Humvees in just weeks.

Rock Island Arsenal has one of only

two foundries in the Department of Defense and with modern technology can make one or 1 million of any item needed by the armed forces.

While known and respected across the armed forces for its products, in the neighboring community the Rock Island Arsenal remains an economic engine and premier employer. Also on the island today are a national cemetery and a Confederate Cemetery holding the remains of Confederate prisoners held on island between 1863-1865.

A monument to the First Bridge is on the island, along with George Davenport’s house which hosted the meetings that planned that bridge. In addition to that modest home, the island is also home to Quarters One, the largest house in the Army and second in size only to the White House in the federal inventory.

The Rock Island Arsenal Museum, the second oldest museum in the Army system, tells the history of the Arsenal and has over 1,200 weapons on display.

The Lock and Dam Visitor Center tells the story of the first completed Mississippi River navigation lock and dam that, when completed in 1933, removed the obstacle of the Rock Island Rapids noted by Zebulon Pike in 125 years earlier.

Calling all rink rats! If you grew up strapping wheels to your feet and had the sound of organ music pulsing through your veins at the local roller rink, the Elmhurst History Museum has just the program to evoke memories and relive your skating years.

On Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum presents “Rollerspeak and a Pop-Up Exhibit with James Turner.”

The program will be presented by Mr. James Turner, one of the founders of the National Roller Skating Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska and co-author of The History of Roller Skating (1997). Mr. Turner will present a slide lecture on the evolution of roller skating from the late 1880s to modern times, and discuss the sport’s explo-

sion in popularity during the Golden Age in the 1950s and ‘60s. Following the presentation, guests will be encouraged to participate in a lively discussion about the sport and share their memories, photos, skating gear, and memorabilia to create a pop-up mini exhibit.

The program takes place in the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst. Elmhurst Art Museum has released new images from David Wallace Haskins: Polarity, a major new solo exhibition by the Chicago-based multi-media artist, now on view through Jan. 13, 2019. The exhibition premieres multiple new projects including an interactive video work and large-scale light installation as separate project spaces within the Museum galleries.
