District 205 approves consultant’s contract but questions remain News reports indicate Sanford under investigation for alleged abusive behavior

At the recent meeting of the District 205 School Board, members voted unanimously during the meeting to approve a one-year consulting

contract with Dr. Jarvis Sanford. Dr. Keisha Campbell, who officially began her role as District 205 Superintendent on July 1, recommended Sanford’s hiring for the 2021-22 school year. Campbell said Sanford

will serve as a consultant in an interim capacity. She stated his duties will include supporting day-to-day operations and engaging school leaders.

She mentioned that Dr. Scott Grens, who had been the district’s

assistant superintendent of innovation and systems management, was recently appointed as the district’s interim associate superintendent.

Campbell stated that she could end Sanford’s contract with the district at

any time. Board member Jim Collins asked if there was a limit to the number of days Sanford could work for the district. Campbell said there was

ECAF honors Tony Gambino as ‘Friend of the Children’ Sold-out golf outing deemed success

It may have been a hot, sticky day, but that didn’t stop a full house of golfers to come out and enjoy the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation’s 25th annual Golf Classic and Awards Dinner held on Friday, Aug. 20 at Fox Run Golf Links.

Following a day of golf and dinner at the clubhouse, ECAF presented its annual Friend of the Children award to Elmhurst resident and local restau-

ranteur Tony Gambino.

Kevin Diamond served as Master of Ceremonies and helped present the golf awards along with Jeff Crum and Dan Sullivan. Dr. Michael Sullivan was the guest speaker followed

by Jim Bowen, who gave the presentation of the Friend of the Children award to Gambino.

More about Tony Gambino “I was brought in to get involved in ECAF by Pete DiCianni, who introduced me to the charity,” Gambino told the Independent in a previous interview. “I had three kids of

my own in Elmhurst schools and had coached sports with them. [As a restaurant group], we got into supporting teams, leagues and school events. My kids [Tony, 22, Roxy, 19, and Ally, 18] are now all in college.”

(DiCianni was previously named an ECAF “Friend of the Children.”)

At HB Jones, Gambino has sponsored the “No-Frills” Fun Run every year, an effort that gives to a different charity each year.

“We don’t care if we make money on a charity event; it’s enough to make it a wash,” he said. “I’d rather not write a check, I’d rather

provide food, host an event, or give food or gift certificates. We’ve been involved in the Ray Graham Association golf outing, ECAF of course, and one of my favorites—the Kick Off for Kids golf outing led by [Elmhurst resident] Mike LaSpisa.”

LaSpisa was also formerly recognized by ECAF as a “Friend of the Children.”

Gambino also gets involved in the Ride for M.S. in the City every year.

If anyone needs a venue for an outing or an event, feel free to contact Gambino. His restaurants are also willing to take part in an “Eat

& Earn” program where a portion of a diner’s check is rebated to the charity.

On the business end of things, Gambino recently started “Delivery First,” the first-ever flat fee dining delivery service for area restaurants.

Elmhurst University alumna and longtime donor Maureen Lamberty Heakin will make a gift of $500,000 to establish an international visiting artists series for the University’s acclaimed jazz studies program.

A 1972 Elmhurst graduate, Heakin made the gift commitment to honor and build on the work of Doug Beach, former director of the award-winning Elmhurst University Jazz Band and jazz studies program. Beach retired in May after 43 years with the University.

The Maureen Lamberty Heakin International Artists Series for Jazz Studies will bring world-renowned jazz artists to Elmhurst University for an extended period of time, allowing them to establish relationships between the artists and campus community; and enabling students to experience firsthand how the master performers “think, create and view life.”

“Maureen’s gift is the perfect way to carry forward Doug’s extraordinary legacy as a teacher, mentor, leader and musician,” President Troy D. VanAken said. “We greatly appreciate her generosity, and her role in helping to give our students a transformative experience.”

Heakin has been a fan of Beach’s for more than 20 years—ever since she and her husband, John, began attending Elmhurst’s annual June Jazz concert, then called Summer Extravaganza.

“We were wowed by the talent and professionalism of the students,” she

said. “(Doug) brought real-world experience to his lesson plans by creating opportunities for the students to interact with well-known professional artists, many of whom are his close friends as well as musical colleagues.

“What I hope to accomplish through my gift is to provide funding for future Jazz Studies directors to continue this very important piece of the learning puzzle for our students— one-on-one interaction with those who have a wealth of experience to

pass on to them.”

Beach agreed that “by bringing in professional jazz artists, our students will rub elbows with them, work oneon-one with them, and learn about this art form just by being around them.” He said Heakin’s gift will be “a tremendous asset to our department for the long term, and one that’s going to have an impact on many, many students.”

During his career at Elmhurst University, Beach garnered some of the

institution’s highest teaching honors.

He also is a Grammy Award winner, a frequent recipient of the Plus Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and a member of the Elmhurst Civic Hall of Fame.

Heakin, who graduated from Elmhurst with a degree in psychology, currently is retired after a successful career in marketing research, primarily at Swift & Co. and ConAgra Foods.

Woman stands accused of aggravated DUI in fatal crash in Elmhurst Berlin praises work of Chief Ruth, Police Department count of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class 4 Felony) and several Misdemeanor traffic offenses.

On Saturday, Aug. 21, at approximately 1:53 a.m., Elmhurst police officers were dispatched to a single vehicle crash in the area of Van Auken and North End Sts. Upon arrival officers observed a damaged 2016 Chevrolet Traverse that had struck a tree.

The front seat passenger, later identified as Lewis, was found in the vehicle unconscious and was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

It is alleged that Mendoza was driving the vehicle when she crashed into a gravel pit, struck a dumpster and then rolled down the gravel pit ultimately striking the tree where the vehicle was found. It is further alleged that Men-

doza’s blood alcohol content (BAC) at the time of the crash was .176 (legal limit is .08) and that Mendoza had illegal narcotics in her system including benzodiazepines, cocaine, cannabis and opiates.

“Like all alleged DUI cases, the case against Ms. Mendoza was 100% avoidable,” Berlin said. “As I have said many times before, if you have been drinking or for any other reason

Heritage Foundation’s 6th annual Craft Beer Fest on schedule

The Elmhurst Heritage Foundation (EHF) has announced the 6th Annual Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest will take place Saturday, Sept. 18 from 1-5 p.m. on the grounds of the Elmhurst History Museum.

This annual event is held to raise funds for the Elmhurst History Museum, including its family-friendly educational programs and museum exhibits. Funds are also used for school field trips to the museum and the Churchville One-Room Schoolhouse.

More day of fest details will be released as the event approaches. Event policies are subject to change as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Changes may include, but are not limited to, schedule changes, revised fest procedures or potential postponement.

For the third year, Pints in Elmhurst will be event sponsor. Brewers are being contacted and the dedicated

sponsors will again have a chance to support the work of the Foundation on the museum’s behalf. We expect brewers will expand their offerings to include seltzers and ciders along with their signature craft beers.

In 2019, more than 700 people attended from 57 surrounding communities.

On Tuesday, Aug. 24, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced that bond had been set for a Cicero Alibet woman accused of Mendoza crashing her car in a construction zone in a residential area causing the death of her fiancé, 33-year-old Andrew Lewis.

Alibet Mendoza, 33, of Cicero, appeared before Judge Margaret O’Connell, who set bond at $500,000 with 10 percent to apply.

Mendoza is charged with four counts of Aggravated DUI – Accident Causing Death (Class 2 Felony), one

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle or a motorcycle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Assault, battery Aug. 21 Police said an officer responded to the lobby of the police department for a delayed battery report in the 400 block of N. West at 5:43 p.m.

The victim told police while walking with his friend the previous evening, he was battered by a group of teenagers. One of the teens punched him in the face. An investigation is pending.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Aug. 24 Police said officers responded to an area near Lake and Grand at 10:19 p.m. for the report of damage to a vehicle. The reporting officer met with the victim who reported the occupants of a red Honda Civic shot a paintball gun at his vehicle. The offending vehicle fled the scene westbound on Lake Street. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the suspects.

Aug. 19-Aug. 24 Police said a reporting officer observed unknown suspect(s) spray-painted the wall of the pedestrian underpass located near North Avenue and Myrtle Avenue sometime between the above dates.

Aug. 3-Aug. 24 A victim in the 100 block of W. Park told police at 12:02 p.m. that an unknown suspect(s) entered the vacant building and removed flooring that had been installed by prospective tenants sometime between the above dates.

The victim suspects the prospective tenants removed the flooring after the lease agreement was not fulfilled. This case is pending investigation.

Aug. 22 Police said while an officer was on patrol near North and Berteau at 5:24 p.m., the officer observed a vehicle which was reported stolen. The officer spoke with the driver and subsequently contacted the registered owner of the vehicle. The owner did not want to sign complaints but wanted the vehicle to be returned. The suspect was released without charges.

Aug. 21 A complainant in the 100 block of N. Addison told police at 6:09 p.m. that a patron kicked a hole in the wall. An investigation is pending.

Grand at 9:30 p.m. Police said that during a physical altercation, the suspect pushed the victim. The victim subsequently lost her footing and fell into the door frame causing a cut

Aug. 20 A reporting officer responded to the 100 block of E. Lake at 8:25 a.m. for the report of a fight in progress. Suspect 1 related an unoccupied delivery truck was blocking the only exit to the apartment’s parking lot. Suspect 1 entered the driver’s seat of the truck in an attempt to move it out of the way. Suspect 2 returned to the truck and punched Suspect 1.

Neither suspect wished to sign complaints.

Aug. 19 Kyle J. Manning, 32, of Bensenville, was charged with obstructing identification, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license revoked, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance subsequent to a traffic crash near York and Grand at 5:21 p.m. Police said Manning provided a false name to officers.

Aug. 19 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of W. Armitage at 7:57 p.m. for the report of a suspect with a knife. Officers observed a cut on the victim’s arm. Victim 1 told police he received the cut when the suspect tried to lock him out of the house. Victim 2 related as she drove the suspect home, he punched her in the face and spat on her. Charges are pending.

Aug. 23 Police said officers responded to the 200 block of N. York at 9:30 p.m. for the report of a suspicious suspect. The reporting officer spoke with the complainant who reported the suspect approached him in an aggressive manner. Officers located the suspect who began to speak in an aggressive tone. The suspect left the area without incident.

Addison at 11:35 p.m.

Aug. 21 Alibet Mendoza, 33, of Cicero, was charged with aggravated DUI, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance subsequent to a crash near North End and Van Auken at 1:53 a.m. (See full story on page 5.)

Ryan Spera, 36, of Wood Dale, was charged with DUI, screeching tires, improper lane usage and no insurance, subsequent to a traffic stop near Villa and North at 12:11 a.m.

Aug. 20 Police said while an officer was on patrol near the Illinois Prairie Path and York at 4:26 p.m., the officer was flagged down by a complainant who related she observed a group of boys who appeared to have been drinking. The subjects were located and one of the subjects admitted to drinking. Contact was made with his guardians and the subject will be referred to peer jury. The other subjects were released to their parents.

Fraud and identity theft were reported in the 200 block of N. Bonnie Brae at 2:01 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used her information to open a T-Mobile account. The victim contacted the phone carrier who subsequently closed the account.

Butterfield at 7:34 p.m. A victim told police she contacted PayPal through a phone number she found online to dispute a charge on her bank account. She downloaded an unknown app and provided an unknown suspect access to her phone. The victim found the suspect fraudulently used her debit card number to purchase Bitcoin.

The victim froze her account and will sign complaints if the suspect is located.

A reporting officer met with a victim who reported his signature was forged on a purchase agreement for a vehicle he purchased in 2017.

The victim stated unbeknownst to him a second purchase agreement was created with different information and a forged signature. This case is pending investigation.

Aug. 20-Aug. 21 Police said officers responded to the 200 block of W. Crescent for the report of a burglary to a

vehicle. The complainant told police upon returning home, she found the passenger door of the victim’s vehicle was open. The complainant related she is sure the vehicle’s door was closed when she left. Nothing inside of the vehicle appeared to be missing or disturbed.

Aug. 20 Retail theft was reported at a convenience store in the 500 block of Spring at 8:03 a.m.

Police said a suspect described as a black male around 30 years old stole two cartons of cigarettes and an iPhone charging cord. The suspect fled the scene and was later reported committing retail thefts in Villa Park.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of Schiller at 10:11 a.m. A complainant told police that upon reviewing security footage, a suspect described as a black male between 30 and 40 years old is seen entering the store and proceeding to the storage room. The suspect placed two cases of tequila into a cart and exited the store through the south entrance door without paying for the merchandise.

Aug. 19 Identity theft was reported in the 1000 block of Spring at 2:12 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his personal information to gain access to one of his utility accounts and fraudulently added a balance from another address. The suspect(s) also used the victim’s personal information to create a fraudulent utility account.

Aug. 16-Aug. 18 Identity theft was reported in the 900 block of Hawthorne. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used her credit card information to make several fraudulent charges to her accounts sometime between the above dates.

Aug. 17 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Lake at 6:18 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with a sales representative who reported an unknown suspect purchased a vehicle using the victim’s identification. It was further discovered the unknown suspect had previously purchased another vehicle from the same dealership using a fraudulent driver’s license. This case is pending investigation.

Aug. 14 Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 11:48 a.m. A reporting officer met with the victim who reported the suspect withdrew funds from an account she shares with their son. The victim confronted the suspect who admitted to taking the money. The victim was advised to file a report with the Bensenville Police Department.

Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Lake at 6:19 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with a sales representative who reported an unknown suspect had successfully purchased a vehicle using a fraudulent driver’s license. This case is pending investigation.

Unemployment benefits identity theft According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported four incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Unlawful use of a weapon Aug. 24 Monique Gibbs, 34, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated use of a firearm near Grand and Lake at 12:23 a.m. Police said Gibbs was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm without a valid conceal and carry permit.

Elizabeth (Betsy) Schumacher, 93 Betsy Schumacher passed away peacefully in Elmhurst on August 25, 2021 at the age of 93.

She was born on May 31, 1928.

Betsy embodied simple, yet special virtues. Abiding love, selfless spirit and genuine grace. She was the beloved wife of William C. Schumacher, Jr., mother of William C. Schumacher III, Margaret S. (Alan) Rehwinkel and Barbara S. (Robert) Hagenberg, grandmother of Robert John (Toby) Hagenberg III, Andrew S. Rehwinkel and Thomas C. (Heather) Hagenberg, and great-grandmother of Adeline, Afton and Charlie.

The much-loved daughter of Clyde and Adeline Boyden Horn, Betsy was born and raised in Evanston. She was big sister to her brother Willard. Perhaps drawn by her father’s fondness for all things Indiana, she graduated from DePauw University and made lasting friendships along the way. Soon afterwards, she met the love of her life and married Bill in 1951. Married for nearly 70 years, she was instrumental in making a home for her family. She demonstrated an appreciation for commitment and service, and instilled the values of devotion, compassion and friendship in her children. Family gatherings gave her the greatest joy. There was always time for family. Just as there was always time for her many friends. She was also active in the community. A founding member of Elmhurst Presbyterian Church, an officer in Elmhurst Panhellenic and a volunteer at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

With sparkling blue eyes, a bright smile and friendly manner, she lived a remarkable life characterized by kindness, thoughtfulness and faith.

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, Sept. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 125 W. Church Street, Elmhurst, with a luncheon reception to follow. Thelma R. Strejc, 77 Thelma R. Strejc, nee Schratzmeier, passed peacefully at home at the age of 77, surrounded by family, after a brave but short battle with cancer. Beloved wife of Bruce for 45 years; loving mother of Donna Dean, Nick (Maggie) Strejc, John (Brighid) Strejc; cherished grandmother of Abbey and Becca Loague, Adeline and Chris Strejc.

Born in Altoona, Pa., in 1943 to John and Elizabeth Schratzmeier, Thelma was the fourth of six children. She and her family moved to the Chicagoland suburbs in the 1950s, settling in Elmhurst. Years later, she would meet and marry Bruce E. Strejc, spend more than 30 years in their Elmhurst home and settle into retired life in Mosinee, Wisc., in 2009.

A supportive wife and caring mother, she put her family first as a homemaker for many years. She was very creative and enjoyed woodworking, painting, and sewing. Thelma was a fantastic cook, always ensuring there was plenty of food, no matter how many were seated at the table for dinner or a special holiday gathering. She enjoyed flowers, plants, and gardening. As a nature and animal lover, she cared for several dogs, cats, birds, and other creatures throughout her life. Thelma loved the Wisconsin lakeshore and enjoyed more than 40 years at the cottage she and Bruce shared with their children on Big Saint Germain. Together, they loved fishing, hosting family and friends, and building memories together.

She was a life-long lover of books and movies, especially enjoying her time as a librarian at the Addison and Elmhurst Public Libraries.

Thelma is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Annie; her parents, John and Elizabeth Schratzmeier, brother Tom, and sisters Glenda, Carol, Peg. She is survived by a sister Linda and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Thelma will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be missed by so many. Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Hybrid National Leadership Conference. The virtual event took place in June. The York students who participated in the event are: Katelyn Guerra, Yusrah Haswarey, Emma Johnson, Julianna Moran, Savannah Nichols and Claire Worobec. Haswarey received a gold medal in the event’s Fashion Construction category, while Worobec received a gold medal in the Culinary Arts category.

Worobec was also awarded a $3,000 scholarship to the Culinary Institute of America.

Public forum brings masking comments Ten people spoke during the meeting’s public-participation segment.

Five of the speakers were district parents who supported Gov. JB Pritzker’s recent order to mandate masks in the state’s K-12 schools.

Two of the speakers were district parents who did not support Pritzker’s order.

Three of the speakers were York students who told the board they felt reluctant to express their opinions in certain classes. One of the students spoke of feeling intimidated in expressing her opinion in a particular class. She said that if she expressed her genuine opinions, she would sacrifice a high grade in that class.

York track almost finished but half a million over budget The meeting included an update about several of the district’s capital projects.

Todd Schmidt, the district’s di-

rector of buildings and grounds, delivered the presentation. Schmidt noted that the project to replace York’s stadium track is just about finished.

That project reportedly had a budget of $800,000, but will cost about $1.3 million—about $500,000 over budget. The project to provide upgrades to the natatorium at York was budgeted to cost about $550,000. That project will reportedly cost about $700,000.

Lincoln construction $1 million below budget Schmidt said the current project to build a new Lincoln Elementary School is more than $1 million under budget. The project was supposed to cost about $32.5 million, but the latest estimated actual cost is $31.5 million.

Board president Kara Caforio and board member Courtenae Trautmann noted that some of the district’s capital projects are over budget because those projects have an increase in scope and are more expansive than the original project. Caforio referred to the project to renovate Fischer Elementary School.

That project originally had a budget of about $5.3 million. The board, however, later approved a more expansive renovation at the school; the project has a current estimated cost of about $8 million.

Overview of new school year Beverly Redmond, the district’s executive director of communications and public relations, gave a presentation during the Aug. 24 meeting about the start of the 202122 school year. The district’s first full day of school in the new school year was Aug. 18. Redmond noted that the new school year has begun with five full days of in-person instruction per week. The 2020-21 school year began with fully remote instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Redmond leaving position Near the end of the meeting, Caforio stated that Redmond was leaving her position in the district.

Redmond has worked for the district since 2018. Caforio thanked Redmond for her service and wished her well in her next endeavor. Redmond did not provide any specifics about her next job. She said she was “moving on to something different.”

School is progressing nicely. He said the City of Elmhurst’s work in installing the underground storm water retention area should be completed around Sept. 27. Once the city’s work is completed, the district will start installing the athletic turf on top of the retention area.

Schmidt said the installation of the turf should be completed around Oct. 15.

“Ocular dominance,” otherwise referred to as “eye preference” or “eyedness,” is the tendency to prefer to view images from one eye over the other. In other words, the dominant eye is the one that looks directly at an object while the non-dominant eye looks at the same object at a slight angle. The brain takes note of this slight difference to provide us with depth perception.

This all occurs unconsciously, of course. So, why would a person want to know which is his or her dominant eye? Ocular dominance is important in cases where a person wants to utilize “monovision” to reduce the need for reading glasses or bifocals. Shooters and archers also take aim with their dominant eyes.

Obama gilds the lily, maybe for a good cause

By Jim Nowlan Barack Obama recently purchased a $12 million summer place on Martha’s Vineyard and planned to host 600 “swells” there for his 60th birthday, until the resurgent pandemic shrunk his party numbers.

I thought to myself: Come on, Barack, do you really need an over-the-top mansion on an island playground for the rich and famous, strictly separated from the hoi polloi who put you in the White House?

And 600 at a party, from George Clooney to Oprah! I can’t imagine there could be any memorable conversations, as guests jostled for wine and canapes. The sole purpose of the gathering was obviously to see and be seen, to validate one’s social standing.

Let me stipulate that, politics aside, Barack is a good man who wants to do right by his country.

After all, as a newbie president in 2009, he and his administration took strong action that prevented a national, probably global, economic collapse. (Unfortunately, after the fact he failed to prosecute the criminals on Wall Street who knowingly sold toxic mortgages to unsuspecting investors.)

My acquaintanceship with Obama goes back to the late 1990s, when he was thinking about Illinois politics, and I was still an expert of sorts on Illinois budgeting and taxation.

Barack would attend sessions at which I was on the panelists’ dais, holding forth. We came to chat after these sessions. A quick learner, Barack was soon himself among the panelists.

Later, when I was teaching American politics at the University of Illinois and Barack was a state senator, I would take my students to Mr. Lincoln’s hometown for a day at the Capitol. Barack would always give my students more of his time than we deserved. In his charming, intelligent, witty way (I’m a Kenyan from Kansas, he would introduce himself), he explained how things worked. My students adored him.

I still recall standing with Barack at a street corner outside the Union League Club in Chicago, after one of our panel discussions. “Should I

run for the U.S. Senate, Jim?” I am sure he was planning to do so, and that he was just stroking me, yet the memory allows me to reflect.

Success in life is often a confluence of talent, drive—and good fortune.

In the run up to the 2004 Senate race, rather unexpectedly, both wide-open primary and general election races presented themselves.

Then, come the Democratic primary, the megabucks front-runner was accused of battering his wife, and his campaign collapsed. Barack moved to the head of the line, and won the nomination.

In the general election campaign, the highly attractive GOP nominee saw his divorce settlement exposed, rich with sexual misadventures, which forced him to withdraw. His replacement was an out-of-state Black man, a kind of minstrel in reverse, who became a joke. Voila.

Barack enters the U.S. Senate.

I belabor the above a bit simply to make the point that lady luck played possibly key roles in Obama’s success. Who knows? Without that, Barack might today be but a foundation president, not even on the invite list for parties of the highand-mighty at Martha’s Vineyard.

But then, I realized that buying the summer place on the island made good sense.

First, the property probably appreciated in value the day he inked the purchase. After all, there are today billionaires for whom eight-figure trophy homes are but trifles. This investment of his will prove valuable to his daughters’ inheritance.

Second, Barack tells us he needs to raise hundreds of millions for his presidential library and museum in Chicago. (Why it takes hundreds of millions, I know not.) So, and I’m serious, his palatial summer place becomes a perfect place to host his fellow nouveau riche overnight.

They would become easy marks for seven-figure, tax deductible donations to the Obama museum.

(I am sure “old money” folks would sniff at Barack’s raising money for a monument to himself as but an example of newcomer tackiness. But, hey, the old money types inherited their wealth, so why should they be so uppity?)

Embrace trust and you’ll never go it alone

A few weeks ago I started a series on seven words that can possibly help us make sense of — and master — the crazy, unpredictable world in which we live.

I got two words completed — kindness and compassion. I wrote about the next two, and before I had the chance to send the columns to editors for publication, my laptop experienced an unfortunate run-in with a glass of water and those newly written columns were gone (at least for the time being, stay tuned on that.)

So much for trying to predict a solution in a world that is unpredictable.

As life often demands, I took a detour. Plan B and maybe even Plan C or Plan D. (You know the drill.)

I’m hoping to recover those columns, but it hasn’t happened yet. So I’ve decided to do the only thing any of us can do when life throws us a curve ball; I’ve decided to trust in the future.

For me that means writing something new. I trust the message I’m about to deliver is the one you most need to hear.

And in that I come to one of the seven words (or ideas) I’d originally planned to focus on: trust and/or faith.

I’ve paired trust and faith because they go hand-in-hand

and I’m using them generically.

The concept of faith (or trust) is broad. It can be what you make of it. It can involve a higher power, or it can stem from simply and miraculously you. Either works for me as long as it works for the truth inside you.

I’m not here to tell you how to find your faith and trust. I’m here to tell you that you need it, however it comes to you.

And however you discover or find it, faith, when found, lives deep inside you. At the same time, it is a trust in something bigger than you. It is both within and without. It is a trust in the universe. It is a trust in yourself.

And whom can you trust, if not yourself?

Trust is powerful. It gives us strength like nothing else. Trust battles the biggest enemy we all have — fear. Think about it: If you truly trust, if you truly have faith — in the now and in the future — fear is lessened. It is annihilated.

It has no stronghold. Fear is not compatible with trust. It can no

longer control you because the trust within you is so much bigger and stronger and powerful than fear.

Fear is unknowing. It is isolation and discord. Trust is also unknowing, but instead of isolation, it breeds connectedness and a sense of inner peace. There is a vast difference between the two. Trust is the we versus the me. It grounds itself in calmness, equanimity and in knowing all is well no matter what. Trust is still waters in the midst of a tempestuous storm at sea.

Trust allows you to believe that everything truly can be all right.

Because it will be.

Trust is knowing that the good outweighs the bad. That love conquers hate. Trust assures you that you are not alone in the battle.

You are supported. Even on the worst days, trust allows you to put one foot in front of the other and step forward. It allows you to find your path and stay there.

In a world of unpredictability, trust is predictable. It is unwavering and sure.

Trust is freedom to be you. No apologies needed. Trust me. Trust yourself. Trust in life.

I come back to my point that Barack is a good man. So, I am hoping he will make his new museum a testament, not only to himself, but also to an America where a fellow from the wrong side of the tracks can still make it to the top.

As for the $12 million summer place and his 600 closest friends: I was more comfortable in America, in my lifetime, when Harry Truman drove Bess in the family car from the White House back to

Independence, Missouri, after his service to his country (by the way, stopping overnight at a motel on the outskirts of downstate Decatur).

Those days are, I fear, gone, forever.

COVID-19 vaccines continue to provide protection even as cases increase As of Aug. 25, 86 percent of eligible DuPage County residents have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 68 percent are fully vaccinated based on data from

the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Despite the relatively high rate of vaccination, COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to increase

and are primarily occurring in those not fully vaccinated.

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) urges those who have not made the decision to get

The COVID-19 vaccines are xtremely effective at preventing serious illness, hospitalization, and death—even from the Delta variant.

Last week, the U.S. Food and rug Administration (FDA) fully approved the Pfizer-BioNTech OVID-19 vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 disease in individuals 16 years of age and older. FDA’s full approval of the first COVID-19 vaccine is an important milestone that should reassure anyone who has concerns about getting vaccinated.

The vaccine continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA) for those 12 through 15 years old and for a third dose in certain immunocompromised individuals. In addition to the rigorous testing and trials that went into EUA of the Pfizer vaccine, the FDA approval requires a rigorous and structured review process, and it means that a vaccine or drug has cleared every level of review.

“Now that the FDA has fully approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, I am hopeful that those who have delayed scheduling their COVID-19 vaccination feel more confident in the safety and efficacy of these vaccines and will get vaccinated,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “With the continued rise of COVID-19 cases and hospitalization across the country, and

here in DuPage County, it is more important than ever for all eligible people to get vaccinated to help protect themselves, their loved ones, and their community.”

The DCHD continues to monitor the situation regarding COVID-19 boosters for fully vaccinated people eight months after an individual’s second dose. Although booster shots are expected to begin this fall, the FDA must first authorize a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) must issue booster dose recommendations based on the evidence presented.

The DCHD is preparing for the likely approval of booster shots and will share updates and additional information in the coming weeks. Currently, individuals with moderately to severely compromised immune systems are recommended for a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine. This includes people currently receiving treatment for cancer, people taking medications that weaken the immune systems, organ or stem cell transplant recipients, individuals with advanced or untreated HIV infection, and other conditions. A full list of conditions can be found on the CDC’s website. Individuals who believe they are eligible for a third vaccine dose should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them, and the appropriate timing of vaccination.

Third-dose vaccinations are available through local pharmacies or healthcare providers and can be given 28 days after receiving the second dose.

DuPage County remains at a “high” level of COVID-19 community transmission per CDC county-level data.

Since last week, the 7-day rolling average of new cases reported in DuPage County decreased 12 percent from 179 new cases per day to 157 new cases per day. As of Aug. 25, there are 106 individuals hospitalized, and 20 individuals receiving intensive healthcare services.

Notably, over 97 percent of hospitalized and deceased COVID-19 cases since mid-December 2020 in DuPage County have been in persons not fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

As DuPage County residents return to work, school, sports, and activities, it is important to continue self-monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms.

If someone is exposed to COVID-19 or begins to show symptoms, testing is a critical step to protect themselves and their family.

The DCHD encourages individuals, regardless of vaccination status, who have taken part in activities that put them at higher risk for COVID-19 including travel, attending large social gatherings, or being in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor settings to get tested.

Now 26, Elmhurst University kicker reflects on football career Not just a sport, but an opportunity, says Oberheide

To former Elmhurst University student John Oberheide, football was not just a sport but an opportunity. Oberheide, who is 26 years old, was the kicker for the Elmhurst University Blue Jays. He graduated in the spring of 2021.

His passion for the sport began in middle school but he describes his senior year of high school as his breakout period. “I had a good season.” Oberheide told the Independent in an interview. “I was kicking a lot of touchbacks and scoring field goals, I even kicked a fifty-one yarder in a playoff game.”

Following his success in high school, Oberheide continued his kicking career at the University of Northern Michigan.

“I rode the high to Michigan and I did okay my freshman year,” he said. “I soon discovered that college just wasn’t for me though.”

Soon after, Oberheide dropped out of college and stopped pursuing football for the next seven years.

“I took a dive and stopped caring about school and football and just went on my own for a while,” he said. “A few years ago, I decided to wise up and return to school and resume my passion.”

While he only played two games at Elmhurst, Oberheide describes his last game as the height of his career. He described his return to the game as a cathartic and conclusive victory.

“Elmhurst University restored my purpose and gave me much needed closure,” he said.

Oberheide attributed the realization of his goals to his parents who never stopped supporting him.

“My father was a do-anything type of guy,” he said. “He would also give me pointers and help develop my skills.”

He also gave credit to his previous football coaches for encouraging him to stay the course as a kicker beyond high school.

When asked about becoming a professional football player, Oberheide joked about his age.

“Maybe if I was a little younger,” he said. “I think anyone can attain their aspirations through enough hard work and dedication but I’m satisfied with where I’m at and what I’ve been able to achieve.”

Oberheide proceeded to address the age gap between himself and his teammates and how it affected his relationships with them.

“It was a weird dynamic at first, I felt like a black sheep for a while,” he said with a chuckle. “Imagine someone seven or eight years older than you walking into the locker room with you one day, you’re gonna have some questions.”

Oberheide said the inclusive and friendly environment fostered by the coaches and the camaraderie built up between himself and his teammates dispelled any concerns.

“After practicing with them for months, age goes out the door,” he said. “I didn’t look at them as younger and they didn’t look at me as older. At the end of the day, we were equals.”

• With an investment of more than 9.000 volunteer hours, the Knights of Fr. Columbus Council made in excess of $91,000 charitable donations to local charities supporting the less fortunate in our community.

• During 2019 and 2020 the Knights, working with Vitalant Blood Services, gathered enough blood to reach over 750 persons in need of blood. The Knights have one more blood drive on November 28, 2021 and hope to gather enough blood to reach over 1,000 persons.

“Take high school more seriously than I did,” he said “Seize every opportunity that is presented to you in your prime because one day, you’re gonna be older and you won’t be able to do what you once could.

That’s never rang more true for me than these past few years as I tried to

get back into the swing of things.”

Oberheied concluded with an inspirational message about never giving up.

“Give it your all every day,” he said. “One day it will be your last practice, your last game, your last day on earth even so believe in yourself and make the most of it before it’s over.”

Lombard native has been held hostage in Afghanistan since January, 2020

By the end of last week, the United States had evacuated more than 5,000 Americans from Afghanistan since Aug. 14, according to U.S. officials.

However, one U.S. citizen, Lombard native Mark Frerichs, was not among them as the deadline set by President Joe Biden for American troops to withdraw from Afghanistan (Tuesday, Aug. 31) has now passed.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Frerichs had been living and working in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, for 10 years as a civil engineer until he was kidnapped by a group closely aligned with the Taliban in January, 2020. The Taliban captured Kabul in mid-August and has now taken over the country.

Art Frerichs, Mark’s father, and his family have been trying to secure Mark’s release ever since his abduction.

‘I feel very helpless’ “I feel very helpless with the way things are going with the government and the way the administration has handled the main evacuation,” said Art in an interview with the Independent. “It’s getting really bad for any type of negotiation, that’s for sure. I want my son back and I can realize, though, that there’s so many other people over there now in the same

mode (trying to get out of Afghanistan).”

Further complicating the situation in Afghanistan were suicide bombing attacks outside Kabul’s airport Aug. 26 that left 13 U.S. service members killed and 18 injured, along with over 160 Afghans dead.

“It’s definitely going to complicate things more,” said Art, who owns Art’s Master Mechanics Auto in Lombard. “It’s a terrible mess. It also shows us that the Taliban is not to be trusted. We (the U.S.) should be taking control instead of taking orders from them.”

On Aug. 16, Art’s daughter, Charlene Cakora, and her husband met in Washington D.C. with officials from the FBI, the State Department, the Department of Justice and the National Security Council, hoping to secure Mark’s release. In a recent interview with BBC News, Charlene made a direct plea to President Biden: “Please treat my brother like he was your son and act to bring him home quickly,” she said.

The BBC story noted that when U.S. officials have pressed for Frerichs’ return, the Taliban mentioned releasing Bashir Noorzai, a drug lord affiliated with the Taliban who has been serving a life sentence for smuggling heroin worth around $50 million into the U.S. Noorzai has been in prison in the U.S. for 16

According to a Wall Street Journal story published Aug. 27, Charlene has urged the U.S. to consider exchanging Noorzai for her brother.

In a White House press briefing Aug. 26, Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked by a reporter if the Biden administration has been in negotiations to release Mark as part of prior negotiations with the Taliban.

“We’ve certainly raised his case at every opportunity,” Psaki said.

“And it certainly has been raised, but I don’t have an update on that case.”

No communication with Mark Art said neither he nor his family has had any communication with Mark all this time.

“I kind of feel a little deserted by the government really, because that’s why you have a government is to protect you and keep its citizens safe,” he said. “The FBI has been working on it (trying to secure Mark’s release) for quite a while and they do what they’ve been doing, but it’s been frustrating that they haven’t even been able to locate him.

They (the Taliban) keep moving him around over there. It seems like any-

time you work with the government, it takes a long time to get anything done.”

Art and his family—specifically his daughter—have been in contact with Illinois Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin, both of whom have been advocating for Mark’s safe return. Art also mentioned someone from U.S. Rep. Sean Casten’s office contacted him last week.

“She seems to be very diligent in trying to push it through (to get Mark home) and make everybody aware of it,” Art said of Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran who lost both of her legs when a helicopter which she piloted was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by Iraqi insurgents.

“I think the biggest thing is having everybody aware of what’s going on (with Mark). There hasn’t been that much publicity on it or anything in the (news)paper (about Mark) for a while. Some people I talk to, especially in the news media, assume that this was all taken care of.”

Art said he wonders how his son is being treated by his captors.

“I’m not familiar at all with the living conditions over there or anything else,” he said. “I do know that

the Taliban and those people can be pretty brutal.”

He said his faith in God has helped him cope with Mark being detained these past 19 months.

“I believe there’s a God and I believe He’s doing what needs to be done (with regard to his son),” he said. “You just have to go with faith.”

Mark the magician Art said the photo of Mark posing with Afghan boys that accompanies this story brings back memories of his son performing as a magician while he was growing up in Lombard.

He said Mark, a Glenbard East graduate, used to perform magic shows at various events, such as Cub Scout and Boy Scout meetings, before going into the Navy.

Art added that Mark learned some of the tricks he used in his show from Marshall Brodien, a professional magician who regularly appeared on WGN-TV’s Bozo Circus.

Cullerton delivers funds for local library upgrades Eight local libraries will receive funds totaling more than $350,000 to upgrade programs and help patrons get the resources they need, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) announced Aug. 25.

“This funding will allow libraries to expand the help they give,” Cullerton said. “Whether it be allowing people to access the internet to apply to jobs or providing programming to help kids retain their education over the summer, libraries are a valuable

asset to our communities.”

The funds received by the eight local libraries is part of $18.1 million in grants awarded to 638 public libraries across the state.

Libraries will use these funds to implement and expand services and products like audiobooks and eBooks, dual language materials, adult programming and more.

Among the libraries to receive funds are the Addison Public Library, which will receive $54,489, and the

Villa Park Public Library, which is slated to be given $32,308.

Other libraries in the district Cullerton represents to receive funds include: Bartlett Public Library District - $55,394; Bloomingdale Public Library - $32,477; Carol Stream Public Library - $58,574; Glenside Public Library District - $53,482; Itasca Community Library - $12,757; Roselle Public Library District $33,617; Wood Dale Public Library District - $19,420.

Area man gets COVID booster on 100th birthday

A Villa Park man got a booster shot and a birthday party at the Edward-Elmhurst Health (EEH) Center in Downers Grove on Wednesday, Aug. 25.

John Mellon received a third dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to help increase his immunity against COVID-19, following his first two shots in February 2021.

Before receiving the third dose, the EEH COVID vaccination team presented Mellon with a card and cake, and sang “Happy Birthday” in celebration of his 100th birthday which is Sunday, Aug. 29.

EEH is administering third doses of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19

vaccines at the Downers Grove location to certain individuals who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. First and second doses of the Pfizer vaccine are available for ages 12 and older, and second doses of the Moderna vaccine are available for ages 18 and older at EEH’s Downers Grove location.

The single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine is available via walk-in visit to those who are 18 and older at the Edward-Elmhurst Health Center and Immediate Care – Lombard, 130 S. Main St. For more information, visit eehealth.org/coronavirus/vaccine/ scheduling.

Park Place tapped by CSO to participate in ‘May There Always Be…’ project

Whether it be puppies, prayer, music, or model trains, the residents of Park Place of Elmhurst are sharing what they hope there will always be more of in a touching Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) project. In collaboration with the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute and folk musician Jim Gill, Chicagoland children and seniors were invited to create works of art to inspire hope and foster goodwill.

Individuals from five local schools and senior living centers, including Park Place of Elmhurst and their sister community Village

Woods in Crete, were selected to participate in the project and have their art displayed on the CSO website and alongside original composition “May There Always Be Sunshine” in the music video. With original lyrics and score inspired by the artwork, the song features Gill, CSO musicians from the brass section, and the CSO soprano Melinda Alberty.

In response to the prompt “May there always be…,” Park Place residents shared their hopes for the future by wishing there may always be things like friends, fudge, rain, and church. Park Place’s residents

in the music video include Cathy Shea with “may there always be sunsets.” All submissions are featured in the photo gallery on the CSO website.

Ambulance carveout is latest Medicaid managed care battleground

Pritzker has ‘serious concerns for patient safety and cost’ of unanimously-passed bill becomes law

Stakeholders are calling on Gov. JB Pritzker to sign a bill that passed the General Assembly unanimously and would remove non-emergency ambulance services from the state’s Medicaid managed care program in favor of a fee-for-service model.

While an association group representing ambulance services says House Bill 684 is needed to counter arbitrary denials of claims by private insurers, the governor’s office and the state agency that oversees Medicaid expressed “serious concerns for patient safety and cost” as Pritzker continues to review the bill.

While the bill is a targeted carveout of ambulance services from the state’s Medicaid managed care program, or the privatization of Medicaid, it marks the latest catalyst for debate over the effectiveness of that program which was greatly expanded in 2017 under former Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Chris Vandenberg, president of the Illinois State Ambulance Association, said in a phone call Monday the bill was in response to the “arbitrary” denial of ambulance claims

by Medicaid managed care organizations, or MCOs. MCOs are private insurance companies that contract with the state to manage the care of individuals enrolled in Medicaid. Among other things, that involves working with patients to make sure they receive routine exams and preventive care, and coordinating services provided by their primary physicians and other specialists.

But Vandenberg charged that leads to MCOs padding profits through denial of claims.

“Since managed care began in Illinois, it’s been a struggle,” Vandenberg said. “So, we have EMTs and paramedics that are working, trying to transport patients, and really, we’re not able to get any of this reimbursement. … And so it’s really impacted the ability to attract and retain EMTs and paramedics, and really it’s causing a serious impact to Medicaid beneficiaries in that they’re not able to find transport as easily as they used to.”

Putting ambulances back in the fee-for-service system would allow providers to submit claims directly to the state Department of Healthcare and Family Services, which Vandenberg said would provide predictability and certainty to the billing process.

But Jamie Munks, a spokesperson for HFS, said in a statement the department “remains strongly opposed” to the ambulance carveout, “because it has the potential to negatively affect the quality of service, create longer wait times for medical transports and payment delays for providers, and could create confusion for customers and providers.”

Munks also pointed to about $3 million of potential lost revenue due to the state’s tax on MCOs which generates greater federal reimbursement resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue annually.

She also noted unspecified “administrative costs” in switching ambulances back to fee-for-service.

If Pritzker doesn’t act on the bill by the end of the week, it would become law even without his signature.

If he vetoes it, lawmakers would be able to override the action with a three-fifths majority when they meet for the veto session this fall.

Pritzker spokesperson Jordan Abudayyeh said in a statement the governor “will take the appropriate action” before this weekend’s deadline, but, “The administration is concerned that this legislation has the potential to disrupt care and reduce the quality of provided services to some of the most vulnerable Illinoisans.”

Specifically, the governor’s office said a Medicaid enrollee needing a non-emergency ambulance ride can currently contact their MCO and be connected with an ambulance transport that’s contractually obligated to respond “in a timely fashion.”

But the administration fears if the governor signs the bill, “a consumer will be forced to use the vendor contracted with by the fee-for-services program—a vendor that is not contractually bound to provide timely services.”

“Consumers would be forced into the uncertain position of not knowing which of their health care services are covered by their MCO, and whether they will be able to secure transport in a timely fashion,” Abudayyeh said in the statement.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Healthcare and Family Services received consumer complaints regarding the difficulty of securing transport from their fee-for-service vendors to get to non-emergency health care services like check-ups and dialysis.”

But advocates for the bill, including Rep. Will Davis, D-Homewood, who is one of its chief co-sponsors, argued the current MCO structure is what’s threatening response times.

Davis said private ambulance companies often handle the 911 calls for communities that are underserved medically, such as the cities of Harvey and Markham in Chicago’s south suburbs. While companies contracting with those municipalities are already on the fee-for-service structure for emergency services due to changes made in April, payment uncertainty for other transportation services those providers render could affect staffing levels, Davis said.

“It’s not just, you know, the providers trying to get paid,” Davis said.

“Their ability to receive resources helps their ability to keep their staffing levels up so they can bring down

response times when people call 911.

So there’s the staffing aspect of it, there’s the idea of making sure that they can provide services to underserved communities.”

Representatives of the Ambulance Association said an early amendment to HB 684 removed non-ambulance medical transports in an effort to address transportation concerns.

The current bill is simply a way to “get paid for the services provided,” which they’ll still be obligated to provide under a fee-for-service system.

Samantha Olds Frey, CEO of the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans, cited concerns similar to Pritzker’s about how the bill “impacts our most vulnerable members

that need non-emergency ambulances for routine care such as dialysis treatments, doctor’s appointments, or scheduled hospital trips.”

She noted MCOs can offer higher reimbursement rates than HFS can for such a transportation service, so moving it back to a fee-for-service plan could further jeopardize those Medicaid enrollees. While MCOs have care coordinators that make follow-up calls to transporters to connect a customer to a service, HFS does not, she added.

“IAMHP met with the industry during the legislative session to try and find a solution that doesn’t jeopardize the care our members receive,” she said. “The ambulance industry refused to come to the table in good

faith. However, we are still willing to understand what the systematic issue is and work toward a solution.”

Davis, meanwhile, said concerns over “arbitrary” claim denials from MCOs are nothing new or unique to the ambulance industry.

That’s why, as part of a health care reform backed by the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus earlier this year, lawmakers created a Managed Care Oversight Commission to, according to Davis, “really dive deep into if we’re going to continue to have an MCO structure—which, you know, some really don’t want—that we can have more oversight and input into how they operate versus kind of the

York girls volleyball team starts season with three wins

The York girls volleyball team is off to a positive start.

The Dukes won their first three matches of the season — non-conference triumphs over crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian, Lane Tech and Buffalo Grove.

In a 25-23, 25-19 win over Timothy, York found itself down 15-3 at one point in the first set, but came back to win by two points — a rarity

in the sport to come back from that type of deficit in the rally-scoring era.

Keira Concannon led the Dukes with seven kills. Emelyn Stettin had four aces, while Kadie Julian had three aces.

York also was a 23-25, 25-13, 15-4 winner over Lane Tech. Ella Lawton had eight kills, while Stettin had seven kills. Amariss Villatoro Nevarez had four kills and hit .800. Addy Hesch had 11 digs, while Melissa

Mueller had 14 assists.

In a 25-23, 25-21 win over Buffalo Grove, Lawton and Ella Contant each had eight kills. Lawton and Hesch each had 11 digs. Stettin had 11 assists.

York, under the direction of new head coach Danny Piwowarczyk, went 8-4 overall and 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play during the COVID-19-altered spring season.

Back for the Dukes are Lawton (6-

0, outside hitter) and Contant (5-9, outside hitter). Contant led the team in hitting percentage in the spring.

Key newcomers include sophomore Stettin (5-10, setter, right-side hitter) and junior Concannon (6-3, middle blocker).

Balance is something that has stood out for Piwowarczyk thus far.

Serving also will be a strong suit for the Dukes. “The team is incredible at serving,” Piwowarczyk added.

“I am struggling at finding a way to get all our top servers back at the line, which is a nice problem to have.”

IC Catholic Prep boys golf team splits pair of duals Zazz Atendido shoots 1-under 34 at Maple Meadows in win over Wheaton Academy

It was a tale of two cities for the IC Catholic boys golf team.

The Knights were sixth-scorecard tiebreaker winners over Wheaton Academy in a key Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contest at Maple Meadows. The two teams tied 150-150 in regulation and went to the extra cards to decide the winner.

Zazz Atendido led the Knights with a co-medalist round of 1-under 34. Jann Atendido shot 37, Nick Zanoni shot 38 and Kenny Jones fired a 41. John Hilgart and PJ Wisniewski

both came in at 42, creating the difference. Wheaton Academy’s next two scores were 42 and 43.

“I don’t think I have ever been a part of a better high school match,” Knights coach Don Sujack said.

“There were putts made on the last hole to take the lead and putts then made to tie. It seemed like every putt that didn’t go in just skirted the hole.

There was some great play out there, highlighted by Zazz’s under-par round. The match ended with our seventh and eighth players finishing as both teams anxiously circled the 18th hole. Each player knew that

every score would be important and that added to the quality of the event.

Wheaton Academy is really talented, and while we’ll see them again at our conference tournament, it doesn’t break my heart that they are in Class 2A for the playoffs.”

IC Catholic Prep then dropped a 155-161 content to North Shore Country Day at Merit Club in Libertyville.

“That’s a great golf course and an outstanding team,” Sujack pointed

out. “Unfortunately, we came out a little flat. We just concluded a twoweek stretch that had three 18-hole tournaments and four matches to open the season. Maybe not my best scheduling, but the opportunity to play Merit Club against North Shore is too good to pass up. Zazz seems like he’s making up for lost time (out last season with a broken collarbone) and continues to play at a very high level. He is turning into a monster player after a slow — for him — start. Jann and Nick started pressing late in their rounds, getting overly aggressive on a course that made

them pay. Overall, we didn’t execute when we had the opportunities.”

The loss put IC Catholic Prep at 3-1 in duals.

“Regardless, we are young, we are learning from our mistakes and we now have an opportunity to practice and regroup,” Sujack said. “We are getting a little healthier, and while it was a quiet bus ride home (from Merit Club), this is a motivated group that can’t wait to bounce back.”

Masks mandated indoors in Illinois; vaccines required for teachers, health care workers

State warns of decreasing intensive care bed capacity amid latest surge

The statewide mask mandate indoors is back, and educators and health care professionals will be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, Gov. JB Pritzker announced Aug. 26 amid an ongoing surge in the pandemic that first arrived in Illinois in March 2020.

People will be required to wear masks indoors, Pritzker announced.

That mandate began on Monday.

The vaccine requirement, which goes into effect Sept. 5, will apply to “all P-12 teachers and staff, all higher education personnel, all higher education students, and health care workers in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, nursing homes, urgent care facilities and physician’s offices,” Pritzker said at a news conference.

“Effective Sept. 5, individuals working in these settings who are unable or unwilling to receive their first dose of vaccine will be required to get tested for COVID-19 at least once a week, and IDPH and (the Illinois State Board of Educa-

tion) may require more frequent testing in certain situations, like in an outbreak,” he said.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said the state is seeing 220 hospital admissions per day, a number on par with a surge in May. Pritzker said 98 percent of cases, 96 percent of hospitalizations and 95 percent of deaths since January have been among unvaccinated people.

While vaccines are the best defense, Ezike said, “wearing a mask continues to be one of the simplest, cheapest ways to reduce the spread of COVID-19.”

Intensive care bed availability in southern Illinois is at 3 percent, he said.

“That’s because the regions with the lowest vaccination rates are the regions where there are fewer hospitals, and lower hospital capacity,” Pritzker said. “And those hospitals are sometimes the least well equipped to handle cases as they become more acute.”

He added, “We are continuing to

rely on experts at the (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and (Illinois Department of Public Health), but you don’t need to be an epidemiologist to understand what’s going on here. This is a pandemic of the unvaccinated.”

The current vaccination rates— nearly 53 percent of the state’s population is vaccinated—“are not enough to blunt the ferocity of the delta variant,” which has led to hospitals “again fighting the battle that we had hoped would be behind us by now.”

Republicans, meanwhile, continue to call on the governor to further involve the General Assembly in his COVID-19 response.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, of Western Springs, shared a letter he sent to Pritzker on Aug. 23, noting he got a call from the governor Aug. 25 seeking input on a potential response amid the new COVID-19 wave.

A message from the DuPage County Health Department Be safe, never touch a bat

This is the time of year when bats are most active, and the DuPage County Health Department is warning residents to never touch or try to catch a bat or wild animal, especially in your home.

Several potential human exposures to rabies have been reported already in 2021, and preventive treatment has been recommended for 55 potentially exposed persons. Five bats have tested positive for rabies in DuPage County in 2021 to date.

Bats are the primary carriers of rabies in Illinois. You cannot tell by looking at a bat if it is rabid. The an-

imal does not have to be aggressive or exhibit other symptoms to have rabies. Any wild mammal, such as a raccoon, skunk, fox, coyote, or bat, can have rabies and transmit it to humans.

Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. Humans can get rabies after being bitten by an infected animal.

Rabies can also be contracted when saliva from a rabid animal gets directly into the eyes, nose, mouth, or a wound. Without preventive treatment, rabies is typically fatal.

A bat that is active during the day, found on the ground and unable to fly, is more likely to be rabid. Such bats should never be touched or handled.

If you have been bitten or exposed to a bat, seek immediate medical attention. Bat bites may not be felt while sleeping so special consideration needs to be taken when a person awakens to a bat or if a bat is found in the room of a previously unattended child, mentally disabled person, or intoxicated person. Preventive treatment with rabies immune globulin and a vaccine series must begin immediately.

The following tips can help prevent the spread: • Keep vaccinations up-to-date for all pets.

• Seek immediate veterinary assistance if your pet is bitten by a wild animal or exposed to a bat.

• Call your local police department or your local animal control agency

to remove stray animals from your neighborhood.

• Do not touch, feed, or attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.

• Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Do not try to nurse sick animals to health.

Call animal control or an animal rescue agency for assistance.

• Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly.

“Love your own, leave others alone” is a good principle for children to learn to reduce the risk of exposures to rabid animals.

• Maintain homes and other buildings so bats cannot gain entry.

• If a bat is in your home, do not kill or release the bat outdoors with-

out speaking with animal control and public health officials to help determine if you could have been exposed to rabies and need preventive treatment. If you are able to do so without putting yourself at risk for physical contact or being bitten, try to cover the bat with a large can or bucket, and close the door to the room. If the bat is available for testing and test results are negative, preventive treatment is not needed.

Mental health first responder, insurance coverage bills among latest signed by Pritzker

Gov. JB Pritzker has been steadily acting on more than 660 bills sent to him by the General Assembly this year ahead of a weekend deadline for bill action.

On Aug. 25 he signed House Bill 2595, which beginning in 2023 requires insurers to provide coverage to all medically necessary mental health care in Illinois, including for mental, emotional, nervous or substance use disorders.

He also signed House Bill 2784 to create a mental health first responder system in coordination with an emergency mental and behavioral health phone system that was created by federal law.

The Division of Mental Health of the state’s Department of Human Services is preparing to coordinate mental and behavioral health services to all Illinoisans as part of the federally mandated adoption of the 988 phone number. The number is expected to go online by July 2022.

The new law will require 911 call center operators to coordinate with the mobile mental and behavioral health services that are being established through the Division of

Mental Health, which is also establishing regional advisory committees in each Emergency Medical Services region.

Pritzker has signed more than 570 bills thus far and vetoed a handful.

The governor has 60 days from when he received the bills from the General Assembly to either sign or veto them, after which time period the bill becomes law even without his signature.

For the bills that are vetoed, lawmakers will return in the fall to consider overrides or acceptance of the governor’s changes.

Most of the remaining 82 bills were sent to him at the end of June, so the 60-day clock coincides with the end of last week for all but a few of them. Below are a few of the bills he has acted on in recent days.

Other bill action Sex education: Pritzker signed Senate Bill 818, which creates a new “personal health and safety” curriculum for grades K-5, and a “sexual health education” curriculum for grades 6-12.

The bill received resistance from Republican lawmakers and

religious groups for its “culturally appropriate” guidelines, including education on gender identities, different types of families, sexual orientation, consent and a woman’s options during pregnancy.

Parents can opt their students out of the coursework without penalty, and each individual school district may determine whether it will teach sex education.

If a district offers the subject, the curriculum must use all or part of the curriculum established by the bill.

The actual statewide curriculum would be developed by the Illinois State Board of Education by Aug. 1, 2022.

But many of the guidelines contained in the statute require that sex ed curricula be aligned with National Sex Education Standards, an initiative by non-government organizations to provide “guidance on essential minimum core content and skills needed for sex education that is age-appropriate.”

The guidelines, for example, require students by the end of second grade be able to define consent, personal boundaries, child sexual abuse and how to report child sexu-

Sexting education: The governor also signed House Bill 24, requiring classes that teach sex education to include an age-appropriate discussion regarding sexting. That discussion would include information on possible consequences of sharing, possessing or forwarding sexually explicit content, as well as the importance of internet safety. It took effect immediately.

Construction transparency: Pritzker signed House Bill 253, which requires the Illinois Department of Transportation to establish and implement a transportation performance program for state projects. IDOT is also required to develop a statewide highway system asset management plan aimed at preserving and improving roadways while reducing costs. The department is instructed to develop a performance-based process for selecting which projects will be prioritized. The bill passed both the House and Senate with unanimous, bipartisan support. It applies after January 2022.

marketing that targets children and ensuring vape shop compliance with the state’s minimum purchasing age of 21. The law allows underage individuals to test a retailer’s compliance as part of a compliance check in conjunction with law enforcement. They will go into effect January 2022.

Vetoes Thus far, the governor has issued three vetoes and two amendatory vetoes, including one of the budget bill that needed the amendatory action because of omitted effective dates.

Maternal health: One Pritzker amendatory veto aims to fix a technical issue on a bill he noted he supports. The measure, Senate Bill 967, will expand the current Illinois Medicaid plan “so that individuals who don’t qualify for full benefit Medicaid still have coverage for preventive contraceptive care and associated screenings related to reproductive well-being,” according to the governor’s office.

The bill passed unanimously, so it shouldn’t be difficult for sponsors to find the votes to accept the amendatory veto, which changes only an effective date.

State Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, the bill’s Senate sponsor, noted in a news release when the bill passed that it also “would provide support for pregnant and new mothers for pregnancy-related condition, including mental health and substance use disorders by requiring private insurance plans to cover postpartum complications up to one year after delivery among other requirements.”

Pollution control: While lawmakers passed House Bill 3190 to limit disposal by “incineration” of certain substances, Pritzker said in a veto message the definition of “incineration” is too broad, creating unforeseen increases to greenhouse gas emissions. He urged lawmakers to pass another bill with the same intent but clearer language.

Wetland protection: Pritzker vetoed Senate Bill 1770, which exempts construction within a 6-mile radius of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers confluence from the provisions of the Interagency Wetland Policy Act of 1989. He said while he’s a strong supporter of a port district project in the area, the bill “would unnecessarily turn the determination of appropriate wetland mitigation over to the Federal Government by severely restricting the State of Illinois’ involvement in the process.”

Duplicative bill: He also vetoed House Bill 1966, noting in his veto message that he already signed Senate Bill 1646, a “similar bill with more expansive provisions” which extends an application deadline pertaining to members of the Teachers’ Retirement System at a private school recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education.

While Davis said HFS has “abdicated” its oversight role of MCOs, Munks said for over two years the agency has been “holding frequent meetings with providers and health plans, a forum to bring everyone together to resolve issues.”
