Police: Repair Geekz closes doors, fails to return customers’ items

According to a release issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, the Elmhurst Police Department has received several complaints lately from customers of Repair Geekz, an electronics repair shop located at 927 S. York Street, Elmhurst. Customers told police they were unable to retrieve their items, which had been put in the care of the business in order to be repaired.

The business owner reportedly stopped communicating with customers and closed the business to the public without returning items

On Saturday, Sept. 11, Elmhurst and the nation recognized the 20th anniversary of the attacks on America when terrorists flew planes into the Twin Towers in New York City, as well as into the Pentagon. A fourth plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa., following an attempt by the passengers and crew to regain control of the plane from hijackers. It was a solemn scene at the South York Fire Station in Elmhurst, where these members of the Elmhurst police and fire departments served as the color guard for the ceremony. The Elmhurst Heritage Foundation (EHF) has announced the 6th Annual Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest will take place Saturday, Sept. 18 from 1-6 p.m. on the grounds of the Elmhurst History Museum.

This annual event is held to raise funds for the Elmhurst History Museum, including its family-friendly educational programs and museum exhibits. Funds are also used for school field trips to the museum and the Churchville One-Room Schoolhouse.

Elmhurst University receives record $3.4 million gift Funds will support student veterans, military career exploration

Two brothers with multi-generational ties to Elmhurst University are giving the University $3.4 million to implement a comprehensive initiative that will introduce more STEM students to careers in the military while also supporting student veterans on campus.

The gift from Robert Jans, of Brookfield; and Elmhurst U. alumnus Tim Jans, of Elmhurst, represents the largest the University has ever received from living donors.

Inspired by Robert Jans’ lifelong interest in supporting the military and veterans, and Tim Jans’ desire

to provide more opportunities for Elmhurst University students, the gift establishes: • The Jans Family Endowed Internship Fund, which will support students pursuing internships in science, technology, engineering and/ or mathematics at a military or U.S. Department of Defense-oriented institution.

The scholarship could be used to augment internship wages, reduce transportation or housing costs, or in any other ways that would remove financial impediments to pursuing the internships. The fund would expand

experiential opportunities for STEM students by exposing them to career options they might not have considered before, while attracting new faces to important careers that serve national security and defense.

• The Jans Director of Military and Veterans Affairs, a new position that would direct and manage the military-oriented internship placement while also providing support and resources to student veterans on campus.

• The Jans Military and Veterans Center, a dedicated space on campus (potentially in Memorial Hall, which

was named in commemoration of those who served in World War I) that will house the director of military and veterans affairs and also provide a gathering space for military and veteran students.

“Elmhurst University is deeply grateful for this extraordinary gift from Robert and Tim Jans,” said President Troy D. VanAken. “Its goals mesh perfectly with Elmhurst University’s commitment to preparing active service members, veterans, and all of our students to succeed in an increasingly complex economy and world.”

Chamber holds 102nd Awards Gala at breakfast Hospital named Business of the Year; Ahlgrims join Civic Hall of Fame

On Wednesday, Sept. 8, members of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ECCI) and other dignitaries, business and community leaders gathered at the Elmhurst American Legion THB Post #187 for the ECCI’s 102nd Annual Awards Gala. The celebration usually takes place on an evening in January but like most events over the past year, COVID-19 forced a change in plans.

As Master of Ceremonies, Ken Bartels invited veterans to lead the Pledge of Allegiance, then introduced Rich Reichert who gave the Invocation.

The program began with ECCI president and CEO John R. Quigley delivering his annual “State of the Chamber” address, providing an overview of the past year financially as well as events and activities that were or were not held. (Most were!)

“We feel blessed to be healthy,” Quigley said. “We kept our doors open, we had no furloughed employees and worked tirelessly to sustain employment and our members. We kept up on the economic damage inflicted on our community. The ECCI pushed restaurants during the multiple closures. In December, 2020, we were the only chamber to keep events going. Last year, we were the first golf outing to return to Sugar Creek.”

Chairman of the Board for 2020 Bill Korbel of Shaw Media took the podium to summarize his year – a task usually done in January. He quipped about having served eight months longer than expected. He was honored with a plaque and was given a commemorative gavel. (Quigley confessed that the gavel was actually borrowed just for the photo. Gavels are currently back-ordered due of the shortage of truck drivers! He assured that Korbel would receive his own gavel.)

Korbel’s speech illustrated why he decided to present the Chairman’s Award to John R. Quigley, noting how the Chamber virtually never shut down during the pandemic, thanks to Quigley’s efforts and creativity.

“We never missed a beat,” Korbel said. “The Chamber plays an indispensable role in the community. We weren’t just an essential service, we WERE essential.”

Besides the Chairman’s award, honors were presented to Betsy D’Onofrio for Ambassador of the Year and to Scott and Charity Ahlgrim who were inducted into the Civic Hall of Fame. The A. J. Toche Terrones Business of the Year was awarded to Edward-Elmhurst Health this year, but Hospital president Pamela Dunley issued a statement of thanks on a video as she didn’t feel she should be away from the physical hospital at this particularly critical time in the pandemic.

Finally, the current Chairman of the Board Desiree Chen of Elmhurst University gave a speech, also noting as Korbel did, that she was delivering her address about eight months later than most Chairmen who speak to the membership in January. Still, she expressed gratitude for the Chamber’s performance over the past 12 to 18 months, surviving, even thriving, during these challenging times.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

was issued a citation for transportation of open alcohol in the 100 block of E. Schiller at 11:30 p.m.

Anna Warias, 33, of Schaumburg, was charged with DUI, endangering the life of a child, improper lane usage and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle near Route 83 and St. Charles at 10:14 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a 9-1-1 call for an intoxicated motorist, the officer located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop at the above location.

Assault, battery Sept. 8 According to police, a victim in the 100 block of W. Armitage reported that a building repair contractor threatened him with a multitool earlier that day after a dispute over spilled sealant. The unknown suspect is described as white male, 59 years of age, gray hair, a gray goatee, 5-foot-7, 160 pounds, wearing a gray T-shirt and blue jeans. An investigation is pending.

Sept. 4 Joseph M. Cascella, 26, of Elmhurst, was charged with battery near Villa and Rose at 2:02 a.m. Police said the victim, a Lyft driver, reported he had a verbal dispute with passengers in the vehicle and asked the passengers to exit the vehicle. According to police, the victim reported he was punched in the back of the head by the Cascella.

Sept. 2 Police said a reporting officer met with a victim in the 600 block of N. County Line who reported a suspect punched him in the face.

The victim did not wish to sign complaints and stated the suspect would no longer be employed at the business.

Aug. 29 Police said a reporting officer was dispatched to the Elmhurst Hospital at 8:52 p.m. for a report of a sexual assault. The officer met with the complainant,who related that the victim was no longer on scene and did not want to report the incident. The officer took possession of the sexual assault kit, which was submitted into evidence.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Sept. 6 A complainant at a church in the 400 block of N. West told police at 8:30 a.m. that the Ring camera on the west side of the building captured two suspects described as white male teenagers climbing an ADT box to gain access to the roof. The ADT box fell off the side of the building and the suspects fled. There was no apparent damage to the building and no dollar loss.

Sept. 3-Sept. 4 A victim in the 100 block of Clara told police at 1:31 p.m. that an unknown suspect(s) slashed a tire on his vehicle while it was parked at the above location. The victim stated he did not want to sign complaints.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Sept. 6 Jaaron J. Holmes, 30, of Hillside, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct in the 400 block of E. Butterfield at 4:07 p.m. According to police, a victim related while in his front yard with his wife, Holmes, who was intoxicated, muttered lewd statements and approached

CALL 800-222-TIPS his wife. Police said Holmes knocked the victim’s beverage from his hand, slapped him in the face, and ran from the scene. The victim chased Holmes, punched him in the face, and knocked him to the ground, police said.

Sept. 4 A 21-year-old Addison woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 600 block of W. North at 11:48 p.m. Police said a complainant reported that she and her boyfriend had a physical altercation. Officers located the boyfriend at the intersection of Villa and Plymouth. Officers interviewed the boyfriend and observed scratch marks on his neck.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor Sept. 8 Anthony Lira, 71, of Elk Grove, was charged with DUI and driving on an unsafe tire near St. Charles and Spring at 6:18 p.m.

Sept. 6 Domingo Hernandez, 42, of Rolling Meadows, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage, transportation of open alcohol and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Roosevelt at 11:50 p.m.

Sept. 5 Vivian L. Jarrin, 31, of River Grove, was charged with aggravated DUI near Fremont at York at 1:45 a.m.

Sept. 3-Sept. 5 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 100 block of E. Park. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converter from his vehicle while it was parked in the parking lot sometime between the above dates.

Sept. 4 Samantha J. Bavaro, 29, of Bolingbrook, was charged with DUI, no headlights when required and possession of cannabis by driver subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose ats 11:09 p.m.

Nicole Jefferson, 46, of Calumet City, was charged with DUI, speeding, possession of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis by the driver subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake at 4:04 p.m.

Anna Villanueva, 21, of Posen, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of open alcohol, improper lighting and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Shady at 1:05 a.m.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported three incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle or a motorcycle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Marquez, 25, of Glendale Heights, was charged with driving while license suspended, unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver, no seat belt and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Route 83 at 6:19 p.m.

Sept. 5 Kiyoshi K. Fields Washington, 41, of New Orleans, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia near York and Fremont at 2:11 p.m. Police said officers responded for the report of a domestic in progress, where the passenger was pulling the driver from a parked vehicle. According to police, the driver showed signs of impairment, and was arrested for DUI. Sept. 4 Solomon L. Suspicious circumstances

Sept. 7 While on patrol at an auto dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand at 10:55 p.m., an officer observed an unknown suspect standing next to a newer model red SUV (possibly a Nissan Rogue or Mazda), which was parked with its headlights on in the dealership’s lot.

As the officer was approaching the dealership, the suspect’s vehicle quickly left the lot. Officers searched the area for the suspect’s vehicle with no results. In the area of the dealer’s lot where the suspect was observed, a vehicle appeared to have been lifted and quickly dropped, but did not appear to have any damage or parts missing.

Sept. 5 A victim in the 300 block of Holly told police at 1:42 p.m. that she heard a constant sound of something hitting the rear of her residence and found hundreds of white pellets around her patio doors. There was no damage to the victim’s home and she did not wish to sign complaints. The suspect’s brother relinquished the airsoft pellet guns and asked the officers to have the items destroyed. The pellet guns and pellets were placed into evidence for destruction.

Letter to the editor Reader bids farewell to summer of 2021 The swim season at East End Pool has ended but after enduring the closed pool summer of 2020 it sure was good to be back in the water!

Big thanks to the Elmhurst Park District for opening both East End and Smalley pools to as close to a regular summer schedule as possible, given the continued issue of the COVID virus.

As a daily swimmer at East End, I can say the staff there was top notch as always. Lifeguards practiced frequent drills each day and made sure all safe guidelines were followed.

Most pool regulars were back for the summer but we did miss a few familiar faces. Some opted to join other facilities and the uncertainty of the pandemic probably affected the attendance of others. Yet, there were new ‘regulars’ at East End, who became part of my ‘Summer Family.”

Due to the late opening of the pool season, there wasn’t time to set up the swim lessons program. In lieu of lessons, I saw parents leading

swim tutorials with their little ones.

The float vests provided by the pool helped with that task and plenty of youngsters sported water wings as they were well schooled by moms and dads.

The weather wasn’t great for half the season with many cooler and cloudy days in July but we made the best out of as much swim time as possible. Having a few ideas to share for next season, I will attend a couple of Park Board meetings this winter and we’ll see what might be accepted in operational adjustments.

As far the summer of 2022 goes, who knows what will happen?

COVID certainly dictates our daily lives. The best advice I’ve heard about the virus is that it thrives when we are relaxed, exhausted or divided. So let’s all please work to stay vigilant, strong and united with our health, lookout for others and hopefully we’ll see you at East End Pool next summer!

Public Arts Commission unveils ‘Portal’ sculpture Friday

Elmhurst’s Public Arts Commission is ready to unveil its first addition to public art in Elmhurst.

Founded in 2018, the City of Elmhurst Public Arts Commission was established to implement a citywide plan for the promotion and thoughtful placement of public art that enhances the business climate and improves the overall aesthetic appeal of our community.

After a thorough review process, the Chicago-based artist Nicole Beck was chosen for her dynamic proposal titled “Portal,” an O-shaped armature with glass that changes colors under certain conditions.

Installed in the new Larch Park near downtown Elmhurst, the 12foot steel and glass sculpture promises to draw visitors to the area, especially art enthusiasts.

Bernadette Lowum, 89 Bernadette Lowum, a longtime resident of Elmhurst passed away at home on Sept. 9, 2021, at the age of 89. Beloved wife of the late David D. Lowum (2001) and loving mother of David C. Lowum of Elmhurst. Bernadette was a very active volunteer, over the years she spent countless hours volunteering with DuPage Pads, 25 years at the Art Institute of Chicago, Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network and as a lay minister at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

Edward-Elmhurst Health announces merger with NorthShore University HealthSystem

Community investment funds created, totaling $200 million

NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) and Edward-Elmhurst Health have announced their intention to merge the two healthcare systems under a new parent system, pending regulatory approval. Together, the organizations will extend their focus on community-connected, expert care while serving as a best place to work, learn, practice and receive care.

“NorthShore and Edward-Elmhurst Health share a vision of delivering expanded access to a transformative, differentiated patient care experience,” said J.P. Gallagher, president and CEO of NorthShore. “By working together, we will connect patients and communities to personalized care, advanced clinical solutions and innovative technologies through improved access, expertise and services.”

Building upon a long legacy of connection to their communities, the organizations have also announced the creation of two community investment funds, with each organization committing $100 million to their respective communities. These funds will each generate millions of dollars in annual interest that will be used to make a

direct impact. The funds will be used to support partnerships with organizations working to enhance community health equity and well-being and advance local economic growth.

Vintage Baseball Game returns to Elmhurst University on Sept. 26

Summon the “strikers” up to “the dish” and let the “kranks” hiss and boo! The Vintage Baseball Game is back in Elmhurst for an exciting competition on Sunday, Sept. 26, with a rousing game played by the wildly different rules of 1858. Fans (known as “kranks”) will learn to cheer and jeer in fine Victorian fashion as two Elmhurst clubs play for their favor.

This year, a special Town vs.

Gown game will pit a team of locals from the City of Elmhurst against Elmhurst University players. The 2021 Vintage Baseball Game is co-presented by Elmhurst University, the Elmhurst History Museum, and the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation as part of the celebration of Elmhurst University’s 150th anniversary.

The game is open to the public and takes place on the Elmhurst University Mall in front of Hammerschmidt Chapel on Sunday, Sept. 26 starting

at 1 p.m. Admission is free, and fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnics and refreshments to enjoy during the game.

The first 100 fans will enjoy free hot dogs and Italian ice. Free parking is available in the Elmhurst University parking lots.

Mayor Scott Levin will serve as captain of the City of Elmhurst team, and President Troy VanAken will take the helm of the Elmhurst University team. The Elmhurst History Museum’s executive director, Dave Oberg, will lead the activities in the role of “barrister” (an umpire by today’s standards) and will share the rules and slang with the audience.

In conjunction, the Elmhurst History Museum is opening a new exhibit, “An Ever-Widening Circle: Elmhurst University at 150,” on Friday, Sept. 24 in addition to co-hosting the Vintage Baseball Game as part of the University’s year-long sesquicenten-

nial celebration.

“We’re very excited to take an active role in sharing Elmhurst University’s history through our new exhibit and by bringing the Vintage Baseball Game back to town,” said Oberg.

“Vintage baseball brings the history of America’s favorite pastime to life in an engaging and immersive way.

It honors the traditions and history of a sport that everyone knows so well and allows players and fans to learn about the origins of the game. With this year’s ‘Town vs. Gown’ twist pitting local players against the university, there is no doubt that it will be a great time.”

Eagle Scout candidate helps showcase library’s ‘StoryWalk’ In collaboration with the Elmhurst Park District and local Eagle Scout candidate Tyler Janiak, the Elmhurst Public Library is excited to debut Elmhurst’s community StoryWalk Project this fall.

Janiak conceived the idea of providing his community with a StoryWalk after learning about its mission to promote early literacy, physical activity, and family time together in nature.

This matched up perfectly with Tyler’s interests and is in line with both the Park District’s and Library’s outreach efforts, too. Additionally, Tyler prototyped the display panels, coordinated with stakeholders, raised

funds, and built the stands for the StoryWalk as part of his project.

The Elmhurst community StoryWalk is located in Eldridge Park.

The first panel can be found near the playground and follows the path that goes west, between the soccer fields.

Tomorrow I’ll Be Kind by author/ illustrator Jessica Hische is the debut StoryWalk title. The whole community is invited to participate.

The Elmhurst community should know what a gem they have in the York boys cross country team, according to Elmhurst resident Melanie Peters.

Not only are they ranked first in the state, but also have moments when they exhibit unusual compassion, encouragement, sportsmanship and character. With so much isolation during COVID-19, it was encouraging to Peters to see such a close-knit group that will reach out and accept everyone, including special needs kids, on the team.

“On Thursday, Sept. 2, my grandson Elijah ran in his first freshman cross-country meet,” Peters told The Elmhurst Independent. “Elijah has Kabuki Syndrome and can’t generally participate in sports, but cross-country is relatively safe for him.”

Kabuki Kids have a wide range of physical and mental challenges ranging from mild to severe, but all students are happy and upbeat and they love interacting with people.

“Elijah’s running partner, Thomas, is a senior who doesn’t aspire to win, but like Elijah, wants to be a part of and be accepted by groups of their peers,” Peters said. “Thomas’s goal this year is to see that Elijah finishes all practices and meets. He encourages Elijah along the way and even sings to him when the running gets tough!”

At the meet on Sept. 2, Elijah finished 15 minutes behind the rest of the team. Some of the runners gathered along the second mile to cheer him on and several joined him, even though they already finished their races.

At the end, Elijah finished the race with the whole team gathering at the finish line cheering for him.

“It was a rather moving ‘Rudy’ moment,” Peters said, referring to the movie Rudy, which featured a young man who fulfilled his dream of playing football for Notre Dame.

“The boys were not instructed to do this, but it shows the character of the team in general. Kudos to Coach Charlie Kern and his assistant coaches for instilling important values that go beyond winning.

“This team is so much more than just a group of talented athletes and meet statistics.”

Elijah Badeaux’s mom Amy Lichon wrote the following in a tweet to York cross country Coach Charlie Kern: “Over 10 years ago, I ordered [the movie] ‘The Long Green Line,’ when it was released, and five years ago, I shared it with my son, Elijah,” Lichon said. “He was in 4th grade, had just joined the Running Club at Jackson Elementary, and after watching [the movie] for the first time he said, ‘I want to do that!’”

She explained to Coach Kern that Elijah had been born with failure to thrive, required a feeding tube until he was 5 years old. He survived brain surgery at age 2, and decided at age 9, he was going to be a runner.

“At that time, he couldn’t run 400 meters, but that didn’t matter to him.”

Elmhurst joins nation in commemorating 20th anniversary of 9-11

The weather was beautiful on Saturday, Sept. 11, making a beautiful backdrop for the ceremony held at the south fire station to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks on America that took place in 2001.

Over 100 people gathered among a flurry of flags that lined south York Road intermixed with posters designating the timeline of the actual events from that fateful day.

The band Celebration Brass played patriotic songs, before the procession began led by Elmhurst’s own bagpiper Brian Costello, as dignitaries, police and fire personnel and the color guard filed in.

Acting Fire Chief Bill Anaszewicz led the ceremony, first introducing Curtis Baxter, chaplain for Edward-Elmhurst Health, who gave the invocation. Other speakers in-

cluded State Representative Deanne Mazzochi, Mayor Scott Levin, Sgt. Matt Himplemann of the Elmhurst Police Department, William Shanklin from the American Legion THB Post #187, Captain Lori Tompos, U.S. Army (ret.), and Cheryl Lentz, D.M. of the Lentz Leadership Institute.

At certain times during the ceremony, a bell rang out in recognition of significant moments of that day in 2001. The first was 8:47 a.m. when the north tower of WTC was hit; another at 9:02 a.m. for the south tower, etc. At each pause, the crowd observed a moment of silence.

Elmhurst firefighters were lined up throughout the ceremony, reminding guests of their presence and their oversight of the City of Elmhurst and its residents.

Following the retiring of the colors, Costello and Celebration Brass performed recessional music.

Bond set for two accused in Naperville murder DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Naperville Interim Chief of Police Jason Arres have announced that bond has been set for two individuals charged with first-de-

gree murder following an altercation in a Naperville parking lot.

Robert Chatman-Jones, 20, of Bellwood, and Desire Gray, 19, of Aurora, each appeared at a bond hearing where

Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $4 million with 10 percent to apply for Chatman-Jones and $1.5 million with 10 percent to apply for Gray.

Both have been charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm (Class X felony) and one count of attempt armed robbery/discharged firearm (Class 1 felony).

On Aug. 29 at approximately 2:11 p.m., Naperville police officers responded to a call of shots fired in a parking lot located on Amersale Drive.

Upon their arrival, officers located two .40 caliber shell casings and more than $100 cash in the parking lot.

While at the scene, the officers were notified that the Aurora Police Department had located a vehicle with two

gunshot victims inside the vehicle at McCoy Drive and Vaughn Road. One victim had been shot in the left leg and the other victim, later identified as Coreon Davis, had been shot in the head and his left hand. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Davis was later transported to Loyola Hospital where he subsequently died.

It is alleged that Davis and the second individual went to the parking lot on Amersale to sell a gun to Chatman-Jones. It is alleged that upon their arrival at the parking lot, a man, later identified as Chatman-Jones exited a vehicle and approached their vehicle.

It is further alleged that when Chatman-Jones gave Davis money for the gun, Davis, who remained in the vehicle, told Chatman-Jones that he was “short” on the amount of money the two had agree upon to complete the transaction.

It is alleged that a struggle between Davis and Chatman-Jones began and that at this time, Chapman-Jones discharged a weapon, striking the two occupants of the vehicle. It is further alleged that both the victims’ car and Chatman-Jones and Gray fled the scene at this time. Following an investigation into the murder led by the Naperville Police Department, Chatman-Jones and Gray were taken into custody without incident the following day from an Aurora apartment complex parking lot.

“Illegal gun sales and the violence that can erupt from such transactions, as is alleged in this case, will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” Berlin said.

On Dec. 6, 1871, Carl F. Kranz and 14 students stepped off a train in the small Illinois prairie town known as Elmhurst. They would be the first students and faculty at a newly formed “proseminary,” a high school for preparing young men to attend the Evangelical seminary or to become teachers in the German Evangelical Church’s parochial schools.

Much has changed at the school’s leafy Elmhurst campus since that time.

It is evident 150 years later that the progress of the school and the City of Elmhurst were intertwined from those early days and continued to grow up together to establish the institution now known as Elmhurst University.

The story of this symbiotic relationship and the school’s 150-year journey is traced in a new exhibit, “An Ever-Widening Circle: Elmhurst University at 150.” The exhibit opens at the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in downtown El-

IC Catholic Prep football team blows out Elmwood Park 68-0 Knights boys golf team continues to motor forward

The IC Catholic Prep football team was dominant in Week 3 with a 68-0 Metro Suburban Conference crossover win against Elmwood Park.

IC Catholic Prep moved to 3-0 overall with the triumph.

The Knights led 36-0 after the first quarter and 51-0 at halftime.

Sophomore quarterback Dennis Mandala completed 5 of 7 passes for 68 yards and three touchdowns.

George O’Brien completed an 18yard touchdown pass.

IC Catholic Prep ran the ball only 18 times for 192 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns. Sophomore Joey Gliatta ran five times for 35 yards and scored three touchdowns. Denzell Gibson scored on a 79-yard touchdown run, while Malik Gray had a 34-yard touchdown run on his only backfield touch. Freshman Dominik Hulak ran nine times for 38 yards.

Four different Knights receivers scored touchdowns. Gibson caught two passes for 31 yards and one touchdown. Connor McCoy had two catches for 28 yards and a score. Eric Karner caught an 18-yard touchdown and Kareem Parker caught a 4-yard touchdown pass. Gibson had 110 all-purpose yards in the blowout win.

Will Ryan and sophomore JP Schmidt each had five tackles, while Nathan Schmidt, Dean O’Brien and Garrett Reese each had four tackles on defense. Mazizi Mbewe and Lino Narcisi each had a quarterback sack, while Marcheon Griffin Mbewe each had a quarterback hurry.

IC Catholic Prep had four interceptions on defense. Anthony Cira had one for 48 yards, while Griffin had one returned 46 yards for a touchdown. JP Schmidt and Bren-

dan Bigane each had one. George O’Brien and Jesse Smith each recovered a fumble, while Hulak and Jadon Mims each had a pass deflection. Cira and Mims each caused a fumble.

Kicker Brian Kolodziejczyk was busy on the kickoffs front. He had 12 kickoffs for 682 total yards (56.8 yards per kick). His long kickoff was 60 yards and he had five touchbacks.

PJ is now playing like he practices, while Jan and Zazz are outstanding, even when they don’t play their best. Now, we get some tough matches and two very strong tournaments to close out September. He holed out from the fairway on the last hole for an eagle to continue his streak at four rounds at par or better. Nick has been our most consistent player throughout the season, and he is poised to break out at any time. PJ, Kenny and Johnny (Hilgart) have been adding scores, and with Luke (Tardiff) getting healthy,

we now have seven guys believing they can contribute a score in every event. It is certainly fun to watch.

These guys are always grinding, regardless of how the match is going.”

The Knights were scheduled to face St. Francis and Timothy Christian in dual matches this week before heading to the Mundelein invitational with such north suburban heavy hitters as New Trier, Lake Forest, Loyola, Mundelein and Vernon Hills being among the field. “This will prove interesting,” Sujack said.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team split a pair of recent Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division matches with Riverside-Brookfield and St. Francis.

In a 25-18, 25-18 win over R-B,

Ava Falduto had 10 kills, 10 digs, two assists, one ace and one block. Claire Wagner had 10 kills, five digs and one block. Allie Geiger had five blocks and one kill. Lucy Russ had 24 assists, two digs, five kills and three blocks. Alyesa Lawton had nine digs and one ace, while Lexi Brandstatter had five digs.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in MSC Blue action.

The Knights also dropped a 25-20, 14-25, 25-21 match to St. Francis in a match where Falduto and Russ both registered double-doubles (10 or more in two statistical categories). Falduto had 13 kills, 10 digs, two assists, one ace and two blocks. Wagner had 14 kills and seven digs. Geiger had five blocks and one kill, while Russ had 26 assists, 14 digs, five kills and one ace.

Lawton had 17 digs and one ace, while Brandstatter had 11 digs and one ace.

The points keep piling up for the York football team.

The Dukes were 56-0 West Suburban Conference Silver Division winners against Proviso West in Week 3.

The win moved York to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. York is two wins shy of becoming eligible for the state playoffs for the first time

since 2011. It’s also the first time York has been 3-0 since that 2011 season.

In its first three games, York has outscored its opponents 149-13.

York now heads to Downers Grove Friday for an interesting battle of 3-0 teams when it faces Downers Grove North, which defeated crosstown foe Downers Grove South last week.

Outlook: York is in a prime position here to set itself up for season-long success. A win against the Trojans puts York at 4-0, needing only one win after that to become playoff eligible for the first time since 2011 and two wins in the final five games to automatically punch a playoff ticket. York has outscored its first three foes: Schaumburg, Morton and Proviso West. Downers North defeated Hoffman Estates 2421 in Week 1 and Willowbrook 27-14 in Week 2. The Trojans went 3-2 in the spring and did not play York. The Dukes have won their last six games.

York boys golf The York boys golf team took care of business with a pair of recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division wins over Downers Grove North and Oak Park-River Forest.

In a 157-164 win over Downers North at Maple Meadows, Kevin Koenigsberger shot 38, while Tyler Koenigsberger shot 39. Cooper Schwartz, Jake Wool, Sam Wit and Nolan Stasica each followed with 40s to round out the Dukes’ scoring.

York downed Oak Park-River Forest 165-170 at Oak Brook Golf Club.

Wool shot a 2-over-par 38. Kevin Koenigsberger shot 41, while Wit had a 42. Jack Ginter shot 44, as did Tyler Koenigsberger.

York also dropped a 142-175 WSC Silver matchup to Glenbard West at Village Links in Glen Ellyn in a contest that saw the Hilltoppers turn in a 2-under-par team scorecard.

Schwartz shot 43 to lead the Dukes, while Ginter, Wool and Stasica were one shot behind with 44s.

“We had a nice week with wins over conference foes Downers Grove north and Oak Park-River Forest,” York coach Jim Borel said. “We lost to one of the best teams in the state in Glenbard West at Village Links in Glen Ellyn. We played the front nine of the 18-hole course from the blue tees where par is 36. York girls volleyball team defeats Glenbrook South Dukes holding own against tough schedule

The York girls volleyball team has faced stern competition from the getgo this fall.

Coach Danny Piwowarczyk noted the team’s 7-6 overall mark through late last week includes a pair of losses to teams ranked in the top five in the state (by one service), three from teams in the top 25 and another coming from a top-50-ranked team.

“None of the matches against those

teams ever felt out of reach for us, and the girls and myself feel like we can beat those teams,” Piwowarczyk said. “We are working on our hitting timing because of hitters and setters have not had much experience playing with each other. That should help improve our attack as the season goes on. We have a tournament at Mother McAuley (in Chicago) coming up that includes some of those top teams we lost to earlier in the season. We are looking forward to playing some good competition there.”

In recent times, York lost 25-16, 25-22 to Glenbard West in its West Suburban Conference Silver Division opener and then rebounded to notch a 15-25, 25-20, 25-20 non-conference win against Glenbrook South.

In the Glenbrook South win, senior captain Ella Lawton had a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs.

Emelyn Stettin had nine kills and four aces, while Madeline Mountcastle had 12 assists and nine digs.

“Ella has been on fire the past four matches, hitting very efficiently and racking up a lot of kills,” Piwowarczyk said.

“Ella’s hitting has drastically improved from the start of the season.

She is seeing the ball and block well right now, and making good, smart decision with her hits.”

Piwowarczyk also cited strong play from junior libero Kadie Julian and Stettin, only a sophomore. “Kadie has been passing fantastic lately out of serve receive,” he said. “It has been a

slow, steady improvement as the season has gone on. She has been working hard at practice to get to the level she is playing at right now. Emelyn has had multiple four-ace games and has embraced our team mantra of serving tough. It takes a lot of poise to be a sophomore on varsity and lead the team in aces by serving hard in high-pressure situations.”

To Piwowarczyk’s point about Julian’s proficiency in serve receive, that skill has been a key focus in the Dukes’ practice gym. “We have been practicing serve receive for large amounts of practice, and it has definitely shown in our play,” he said.

“Our passing has looked much more consistent of late. The team is very willing to get coached on technique

to help them improve and are hungry to get better, especially in serve receive.”

Piwowarczyk also has been pleased with how his team has battled adversity and pressure on the court thus far. “We are not rolling over when facing a deficit,” he said.

“We were down 15-3 in the first set against Timothy Christian and came back to win. Against Fenwick, we were down 21-17 in the first set and came back to win. Against Glenbrook South, we had our worst set loss of the season (25-15) and came back to win the next two. This team turns up the intensity as the match goes on and is willing to make adjustments.”

York plays in the Mother McAuley tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Timothy Christian girls volleyball team took care of business last week with a pair of Metro Suburban Conference wins.

The Trojans were 25-12, 25-17 winners over Elgin St. Edward.

Abby VanderWal had 12 kills and two aces, while Hope Huizenga had two kills, one ace and five digs.

Amanda Leibrock had three kills and three blocks. Sadie Orange had five kills and four blocks, while Addy Vogelzang had four kills. Sierra Rieger had 14 assists, one ace and three digs and Eva Pieta had 10 assists.

Some key contributors thus far for York includes the trio of Katelyn Winton, Katherine Klimek and Maggie Owens.

“They are tough competitors who have shown up big for the team the last two weeks,” DeAngelis said.

DeAngelis said there are areas the team continues to work to get better at, including the 1-5 runners turning in a split of 30 seconds or under.

“However, the team is progressing nicely and they are extremely dedicated,” she said. “This is a special varsity group and this is a special team. What impressed me about all 80 or so girls is their work ethic, dedication to their team and their respect for one another.”

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in Elmhurst aims to amplify the voices of those who have been affected by suicide and provide support and resources for survivors and people in crisis, during the month of September, which is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

Moms Demand Action Elmhurst will focus on suicide prevention for its monthly meeting, scheduled for the evening of Thursday, Sept. 16 at the Elmhurst Public Library. A guest speaker from DuPage County Behavioral Health will share local statistics and resources to serve and support residents of DuPage. Attendees will not only hear suicide survivor stories but will also learn how to get involved and help prevent this public health crisis.

National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is a time to highlight the fact that nearly two-thirds of all gun deaths in the U.S. are suicides, resulting in an average of 64 deaths per day. In Illinois, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in an average year, 538 people die by gun suicide. The rate of gun suicide increased 19% between 2010 and 2019. Further, in DuPage County, out of 192 deaths by firearms that were registered between 2015 and 2019, 141 were gun suicides.

In the last couple of years, the risk of suicide has not subsided.
