Uber driver charged with sexual abuse of Elmhurst passenger On Wednesday, Sept. 2, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced that bond had been Ghazwan Alani set for an Uber driver accused of sexually abusing a 23-year-old woman upon arrival at her destination in Elmhurst.

Ghazwan Alani, 32 of Palatine, appeared at a bond hearing Wednesday morning, where Judge John Kinsella set bond at $100,000 with 10% to apply. Alani has been charged with three counts of Criminal Sexual Abuse, a Class 4 Felony.

According to the reports, on May 19, 2019, the victim arranged for an Uber ride to bring her to a location in Elmhurst. At approximately 1:19 a.m., the woman arrived at her location. It is alleged that upon arrival, Alani exited the vehicle, opened the rear driver’s side door, entered the back seat of the vehicle and sexually abused the woman.

The victim was able to escape out of the rear passenger’s side door after kicking her alleged attacker. She then ran from the vehicle and entered her destination.

The following morning the woman contacted the Elmhurst Police Department. An investigation, which included extensive forensic and DNA analysis, led the Elmhurst police to Alani, who was taken into custody from his home in Palatine on Tuesday.

“The allegations against Mr. Alani are outrageous,” Berlin said. “After a night out, the victim in this case protected herself and the motoring public by taking an Uber only to be allegedly sexually abused by her

driver. While ride-sharing services are safe, there are simple precautions you can take to protect yourself. Be aware of your surroundings. If at all possible, try to travel with someone.

If you must travel alone, share your ride details with others such as where you are coming from and when and where you will arrive.

“I would like to thank the Elm-

hurst Police Department for their truly outstanding work in identifying the defendant in this case.”

Alani’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 24 for arraign-

ment in front of Judge John Kinsella.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

County Clerk seeks election judges Pay is double due to COVID-19 supplement funding

In celebration of National Poll Worker Recruitment Day on Sept.

1, DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek’s office has announced that pay will double for election judges for the 2020 Presidential election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Election judges working on Election Day will receive $130 in base pay and another $130 as a COVID-19 supplement for a total of $260. Election judges working during Early Voting will receive $10 per hour in base pay and another $10 per hour as a COVID-19 supplement.

Kaczmarek’s office is also reporting that polling places will be equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitation supplies, and social distancing signage and floor markers.

Training for judges available online In order to protect the health and safety of election judges, DuPage County is implementing a new online judge training system to allow judges to be trained from home rather than being required to do so in person. This training covers a complete walk-through of procedures and process from start to finish of Election Day. Election judge pay increases, PPE and the online training system for the Nov 3rd election will be paid for out of CARES Act funding provided with the bipartisan support of the DuPage County Board.

While their specific duties vary, election judges are in charge of setting up and preparing the polling place, welcoming voters, verifying voter registrations and issuing ballots. Election judges also help ensure voters understand the voting process by demonstrating how to use voting equipment and explain-

Established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, National Poll Worker Recruitment Day aims to raise awareness about the benefits and importance of poll working and inspire more Americans to volunteer.

Working from home can yield numerous challenges. This reason, among others, is why Workvana was born. Workvana opened its newest remote-work location this July at Red Arrow restaurant in Elmhurst, located at 111 E. First St. Workvana provides day-time space for employees who can work remotely. By converting restaurants that are only open for dinner into a workspace, Workvana allows members to be productive in a distraction free space from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.—and stay close to home.

“Life is all about work-life integration,” co-founder Kami Bond said. “I’m nowhere near as productive or present when I’m multitasking.”

Workvana is for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and anyone looking for a space to be productive.

Members can choose from three monthly packages, or nonmembers can buy a day pass. They have access to coffee and tea, Wi-Fi, outlets, white noise machines and a Workvana host. The space creates opportunities for networking, social connectivity and small meetings.

Bond said she and her co-founders, Marcello Navarro and Jason Freiman, are remote workers who got frustrated while working from home.

“I got worried about all the other things I needed to do around the house and couldn’t focus and be productive,” Bond said.

She tried working in coffee shops, but said it was loud and uncomfortable.

Navarro said he had other frustrations.

“I started to feel isolated and lonely working out of my own place,” he said.

One month into the pandemic, Bond said they reached out to their members to see if they were interested in coming back under social distancing guidelines.

“Everyone wanted to come back,” she said.

“They really wanted to get out of the house.”

Workvana staff made some adjustments to their setup, including hand sanitizer, frequent cleanings and socially distanced tables.

Workvana’s Little Victories location tripled its membership, and the founders were finally able to open their Elmhurst location in July.

Although COVID-19 made it difficult for Workvana to reopen, Navarro said the virus caused a very sudden explosion of remote work.

More than 75% of employers currently have people working from home, according to a report by SHRM’s Covid-19 Business Index.

“People and corporations are realizing that working from home is not necessarily remote work,” Navarro said.

For some people, COVID-19 generated their interest in Workvana.

Member Tom Fullerton said staying home with four kids made it nearly impossible to be productive.

“It’s very quiet at the locations,” he said of Workvana. “You never know if a coffee shop is going to be loud. There is more certainty about this.”

Fullerton said he enjoys not having a far commute and being home in time for dinner. He said he is considering changing his routine even after COVID-19 subsides.

“My experience commuting downtown is going to be permanently altered,” Fullerton said.

Workvana is hoping to attract not only workers with children, but also younger workers. For millennials, a flexible work life is one of the highest-ranking employee benefits, according to a State of the American Workplace report by Gallup. Bond said she believes Workvana will appeal to this trend in younger generations.

In addition to benefiting members, Workvana also helps support restaurants and local communities. During COVID-19 especially, restaurants can benefit from a new revenue source, Navarro said. Additionally, Workvana locations draw more attention to restaurants and surrounding businesses.

As for the future, Bond said they hope to expand Workvana outside of Illinois. Two new locations are opening soon in Chicago in Logan Square and River North. Workvana’s Naperville location is opening on Oct. 5 at Red Arrow restaurant.

County offers Election Day assistance to elderly, voters with disabilities On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the DuPage County Clerk Election Division announced that special assistance in voter registration is available to the elderly and voters with disabilities through the Division’s office. The Division can assist in the arrangement of voter registration appointments with deputy registrars for the upcoming General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

All eligible registered voters, including those who are physically unable to get to their polling place, are entitled to receive a ballot by mail or in person. An individual may request a ballot to vote by mail up through Oct. 29. An individual may vote early at the Election Division office, beginning Sept. 24, through Nov. 2, or early vote in person at one of the County’s Early Voting

sites, starting Oct. 19, through Monday, Nov. 2.

County, COD launch anti-racism initiative In partnership with DuPage County, the College of DuPage (COD) is launching a new initiative to unite the community against racism and provide a platform for meaningful conversations to help audiences reflect, share and act. USDA Forest Service proposes changes to oil, gas development regulations On Tuesday, Sept. 1, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service published a proposed rule that aims to improve agency regulations for oil and gas development on national forests and grasslands.

The proposed change is one of the efforts underway at the Forest Service in support of Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue’s direction to boost productivity on national forests and grasslands.

The proposed rule would align Forest Service processes with those at the Department of the Interior to provide more clarity and consistency for oil and gas permitting on public lands.

The changes also emphasize lease op-

erator responsibilities, which include safeguarding natural resources, and clarify what management actions the Forest Service may take when operators are not in compliance.

“Updating our regulations about oil and gas resources will help us be more efficient, while improving customer service,” said Forest Service Chief Vicki Christiansen. “The rule would promote responsible development of our nation’s vast energy resources while preserving the surface resources of national forests and grasslands.”

Police said a suspect at a car wash in the 600 block of W. North was waiting to go through the car wash, honking his horn and ignored the attendant’s instructions. As the victim approached the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect yelled obscenities, spat on him and left the scene. The victim did not wish to pursue charges. The officer provided the suspect with a no-trespass notice.

Aug. 26-Sept. 1 Deceptive practice was reported at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand. A complainant told police that a week ago, a suspect purchased a vehicle with a personal check, which came back non-sufficient funds between the above dates. On Sept.

1, the suspect was in South Dakota and attempted to trade in the vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody by the Spink County Sheriff’s Office and was charged with possession of stolen property. The vehicle was recovered.

Police said witnesses observed an unknown female subject exit a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 11:22 p.m. without paying for a shopping cart filled with hair care products and over the counter medication. She was able to load one bag into a vehicle before she and three other suspects fled the scene southbound on York.

The shopping cart filled with merchandise was recovered at the scene.

Purpora, 49, of Elmhurst, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a valid concealed carry license and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Arlington and Marion at around 4:54 p.m. Police said an officer learned that Purpora’s Illinois concealed carry license was expired, and a loaded Beretta Nano pistol was located near the center console of his vehicle.

Suspect in custody allegedly spits on nurse, officer On Aug. 30, police said that while a suspect was in the custody of Hillside Police for felony charges, the suspect was transferred to Elmhurst Hospital. During treatment, the suspect reportedly spat on an officer and attending nurse. The suspect was charged with two counts of felony aggravated battery.

A special House committee will look into House Speaker Michael Madigan’s ties to Commonwealth Edison and determine whether discipline is needed after House Republican leadership filed a petition to initiate the process.

Welch said in a phone call Sept. 2.

“Fairness is extremely important to me, and that’s what he’s going to get here.”

Welch gave no timeline for the next action of the committee, which includes his fellow Democratic Reps. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, and Elizabeth Hernandez, D-Cicero. Republican appointees include Deputy Minority Leader Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, and Reps. Deanne Mazzochi, R-Elmhurst, and Grant Wehrli, R-Naperville.

Per House rules, the committee has the authority to subpoena and administer oaths at the discretion of the chair, but Welch said it is “too early” to tell what authority will be used.

“Like in the past, I’m sure we will approve rules of procedure,” he said.

“So that’s why I believe right now it’s premature to say exactly what we’re going to do.”

Welch said the process will be transparent and hearings will be public. The body will also be required to file a report on alleged charges with the House clerk. If the panel approves charges, the matter would move to a 12-person discipline panel appointed through similar processes.

In response to Durkin’s petition, Madigan issued a statement that was at times defensive, accusatory and a direct political attack on the Republican Party under President Donald Trump. It was distributed by his official state communications department.

He said bills favorable to Commonwealth Edison—which include measures providing hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies to a pair of nuclear power plants and making rate increases easier for utility companies—passed with broad bipartisan support and backing from environmentalists and other stakeholders.

the negotiations of these bills. They witnessed firsthand that House Democrats challenged representatives of ComEd and Exelon on critical portions of their proposed bills. Rep. Durkin knows it, and all those actually involved in the process know it.”

He called Durkin’s petition a “political stunt only months away from one of the most consequential elections of our lifetimes” and questioned the Republican leader’s own legislative dealings.

“The law does not prohibit members of the General Assembly from making job recommendations. If Rep. Durkin wants to question whether legislators should be allowed to make job recommendations, I encourage him to be transparent and disclose all of the jobs he has requested or lobbyists he has recommended over the years. He should also disclose the various actions he personally took to pass the energy bills, both in 2011 and 2016,” Madigan said.

Madigan also claimed he “can’t identify one thing” Durkin and state Republicans have done to help Illinois residents amid a weakened economy and global pandemic. He said Republicans would rather focus on him than “a federal administration that has used the White House to prop up Donald Trump’s wealthy campaign donors and friends at the expense of the American people.”

At an unrelated news conference in Chicago on Sept. 2, Gov. JB Pritzker said he is hopeful it is an attempt to get “real answers” from the speaker rather than a “political stunt” as characterized by Madigan.

“As I have said all along, there are questions that need to be answered by the speaker, and perhaps the creation of this legislative committee will actually get some of those answers,” he said.

Let’s come together

I’ve never paid much attention to politics – until recently.

When I was first eligible to vote at age 18 and even 19, I was too busy having fun. My teenage brain didn’t perceive politics as fun, so I didn’t vote. (Embarrassed to admit that now but I try to be truthful about what I write.)

In my twenties, I was busy getting married and having babies.

Politics were on the back burner.

I didn’t have the time. Sleep and a quick three-minute shower were more of a priority.

My twenties morphed into my , and the story was much the same. Chasing kids, taxiing them to activities and volunteering at sporting events all took precedence.

Besides, our country was doing well, as it always had during my lifetime. I had no reason to suspect anything different. I voted, but didn’t do much research or give it a whole lot of thought.

We were America, after all. It almost felt like we were invincible.

I took voting for granted. I took our nation for granted. I took our freedoms for granted. Looking back, I feel the tug of regret.

Now it is 2020 and I don’t take anything for granted. I have seen how life can change in the blink of an eye by something unsuspected and unforeseen.

And I have seen how politics can capitalize on this. In both directions.

We are a nation of people from different backgrounds, different perspectives, different cultures and different beliefs coming together to live as one country. It’s a land like no other. And for the last 240-plus years this has worked out pretty well.

I don’t want this to change. I’m guessing you feel the same.

Please, let’s come together. All of us. Despite our strong beliefs and resolve about what is right and

wrong. About whom we like or don’t like. About whether you call them masks or face coverings and whether you are pro or con. Let’s look beyond and find some common ground.

I don’t know the correct way to accomplish this. There are no easy answers because no one side is “right” and no one side is “wrong.”

Everyone has their own truth, and I believe each person stating these truths believes them wholeheartedly and to the core.

Bottom line however, no one wants our country to fail. There is one truth we can all attest to.

Perhaps we can start with that, and move forward from there.

We can all do our part. We all are entitled to our opinions but divisive behaviors don’t help anyone. Reach out to those who disagree with you and offer honest discourse.

Not hurtful memes. Not anger. Not labels. Not judgment.

We are all walking our own walk and doing the best we can. And after Nov. 3, we are going to have to live together as one nation, like we have for 200-plus years. Let’s not change that. Let’s not mess this up.

Let’s come together and make this happen. For all of us. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: We can do this. We can do this together.

Cullerton urges qualified residents to apply to be snowplow drivers this winter The Illinois Department of Transportation is now accepting applications for seasonal snow-and-ice removal positions, and State Senator Tom Cullerton is urging qualified DuPage County residents to apply.

“We rely on our snowplow drivers to keep our roads safe during the winter season,” Cullerton said. “This is a great opportunity for those struggling to find employment during this awful pandemic.”

Through the department’s annual “snowbird” program, temporary snowplow drivers are hired every year on a full-time and on-call basis.

To be considered, applicants must have a commercial driver’s license.

A pre-employment physical, vision test, and drug and alcohol screening are also required.

Applicants will be selected based on availability, job-related experience and qualifications. Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

Swimming enthusiast offers another summer review

At this time of year in 2018 and 2019, I submitted letters to the editor on the summer months that just passed with a focus on enjoying time at Elmhurst’s East End Pool. This year, thanks to the current pandemic, there was no pool season anywhere.

The precautions taken were totally justified but the pools being closed still hurt!

COVID-19 has done far worse damage than keeping us swimmers out of the pools. The U.S. death totals and those hospitalized, sometimes for months, are still a big concern. I personally know five people who had the virus, two of whom had to be treated in ICUs. Since mid-March I noticed how more accommodating strangers were in public. Beyond the mask wearing and social distancing, there were more “No, you can go before me” gestures in stores, when driving, and in other encounters.

All healthcare workers and first responders continue to get their deserved praise for being on the front lines of this crisis. We can’t forget these people are ALWAYS with us no

matter the illness. The same goes for store workers and those who truck in goods still needed, they’ve never let up. These last six months I’ve ordered take out from local restaurants many times and every delivery has been safe and friendly.

Another bright spot has been the parade of dogs we all see as folks take their canines on walks. Every day my block resembles backstage at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and I love it. Dog and cat adoptions increased as people sought companions to work through this insanity.

If you take away the no swimming or seeing my “summer family” of friends at East End Pool, there are many good things to appreciate. I follow a guideline to getting through this pandemic: This virus preys on us when we’re relaxed, exhausted or divided. We need to remember this while waiting for better days. Those days are coming and maybe next summer we can be back in our local pools.

College corner • Erica Hackett of Elmhurst has been awarded a Fellowship worth $8,500 by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi-the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Hackett is one of 58 recipients nationwide to receive a Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship.

Hackett received a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management-international business from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a Phi Kappa Phi Fellow, Hackett will pursue a Juris Doctor at The George Washington University Law School.

• Millikin University has announced the names of the outstanding undergraduates who have been named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2020 semester. Among them were Margot Frank and Demetri Sepsis, both of Elmhurst.

• Five individuals and one team were recently named to the Lawrence University Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2020. Among them was Elmhurst native and York grad Hayley Vatch Breden ‘09, who will be inducted at a later date to be

According to Lawrence University, Hayley Vatch is one of the finest distance swimmers in Lawrence and Midwest Conference history. She was a seven-time conference champion and the 2009 Midwest Conference Swimmer of the Year. She led Lawrence to three consecutive second-place finishes at the Midwest Conference Championships in her final three seasons of competition.

In her senior season of 2008-09, Vatch won three titles at the MWC Championships and set eight records.

She won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.28 and set Lawrence, meet and pool records as she broke the old conference record by more than four seconds. Vatch also won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.03, and that broke a 23-year-old conference record and the Lawrence record. She finished the MWC Championships that season by winning the 1,650 freestyle in 17:45.10, breaking the Lawrence, meet and pool records.

After earning MWC Swimmer of the Week honors four times during her career, Vatch set the Lawrence record in the 1,000 freestyle with a ime of 10:52.67.

in Elmhurst, think of Joanne Wagner. It was her responsibility as an Elmhurst Park Board member to be creative and choose names for new parks. For 29 years, Joanne Joanne B. Wagner ded- (Butterfield) icated her time Wagner and efforts to the community she loved by serving on the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners. Her lifetime of commitment helped make the Elmhurst Park District what it is today – one of the premier park districts in the State of Illinois and in the nation.

Joanne Butterfield was the third oldest of the five children of Ruth and Frank E. Butterfield. She was born in California on May 12, 1926 where her parents had moved from Elmhurst for a few years because of a business venture. In 1928 the family returned to Elmhurst where Joanne attended Washington Elementary School and York High School. She went to the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana for two years and in 1948 married Charles Russell Wagner. The couple had two daughters, Barbara Jo (b. 10/23/51) and Carole A. (b.9/22/54). They first lived on Highland Avenue but moved back to Joanne’s childhood home at 487 S. York Street when her mother died.

Over the years, Joanne was a member and officer of many organizations including the Elmhurst Evening Woman’s Club, League of Women Voters, Daughters of the American Revolution, Elmhurst Sesquicentennial Committee, Illinois Association of Park Districts, and People for Elmhurst Parks. She also found time to sing in the choir of the First Congregational Church.

Park District becomes her passion While her own children were young, Joanne became interested in the Elmhurst Park District. She first advocated for a bond issue to enlarge Butterfield Park. Although the bond issue did not pass, Joanne decided to run for a seat on the Park Board. She was elected in 1959 to fill a term vacated by Alice Wagner (no relation). In 1961 Joanne was named Chairman of the Public Relations and Recreation committees. In 1962 she was appointed by the Board to serve as vice president and reappointed as the board’s representative to the Lizzadro Museum Board of Trustees. In 1966 Joanne B. Wagner was elected president of the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners and was continually reelected president five more times.

With Joanne Wagner as president, the Elmhurst Park District passed two community referenda and broke new ground. During her tenure The Courts was constructed, Sugar Creek Golf Course became a reality, and

efforts to find the best qualified people to work for the Park District. In fact, because of this, the Elmhurst Park District is actually the envy of other park districts.”

Honors and recognition In 1984 the Elmhurst Park District gave Joanne Wagner a lovely, engraved pewter vase in recognition of her 25 years of outstanding service as a Park Board Commissioner. She also was presented with a diamond pin from the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) in celebration of her silver anniversary. In 1986 the Elmhurst Jaycees honored Joanne Wagner with its Distinguished Service Award.

Sadly, two years later, Joanne Wagner died of cancer on July 13, 1988.

She was buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois. A Joanne B. Wagner Memorial Fund was established in her memory with scholarship money going to the needy for Park District programs. In addition, funds are given to Elmhurst junior and senior college students who are majoring in Parks and Recreation.

The ultimate tribute, however, was the renaming of the Elmhurst Community Center in 1989 as the Joanne B. Wagner Community Center in her honor.

“At the bottom of all of Mom’s service was a deep love of nature,” Carole said. “She was always interested in parks and natural beauty.

This is one reason that she first ran for commissioner and what kept her there for 29 years.”

DuPage Care Center to host virtual fall festival to support residents The DuPage Care Center and the DuPage Care Center Foundation will host the Center’s 53rd annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Due to COVID-19, the annual event to support social and leisure activities for residents of the DuPage Care Center will move online at dpccfoundation.org, where visitors can browse the virtual resident art show, the community car show, and the crafts show. The public can also pre-order Fall Festival treats, such as apple slices, taffy apples, and cake rolls. Participants can also order fall mums and purchase raffle tickets or donate to the Foundation.

Drive-through pick-up of pre-or-

dered items will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.

19 at the Care Center, 400 N. County Farm Road. Limited numbers of Fall Festival treats and raffle tickets will also be available onsite that day.

All drive-through customers will be asked to remain in their cars. The raffle drawing will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Facebook.

The annual event benefits the Care Center’s Resident Recreation Fund and the DuPage Care Center Foundation, which work to provide residents with quality of life programs and services throughout the year. For more information, please visit dpccfoundation.org.

The Abbey was added to its facilities. In addition, the Park District acquired Berens Park and land along the Prairie Path and Salt Creek.

With future generations in mind, Joanne urged the Park Board to purchase land whenever it became available. She envisioned open green spaces for Elmhurst residents of all ages to enjoy. She was emphatic about this! Once at a board meeting a discussion ensued regarding Wilder Park land being used for parking.

Citizens present were concerned about the loss of park grounds. Recalls daughter, Carole, “Mom was even known to become aggressive about her feeling of preservation of land…Mom listened for a while, and I imagine when she had heard enough, she stood up and pounding her fist on the table promised, ‘NOT ONE BLADE OF GRASS WILL BE TOUCHED!’” Joanne Wagner’s opinions and experience were valued by her fellow board members. She often made decisions in favor of the Elmhurst people instead of financial considerations.

“There is no question that in her many years on the park board that she was always for the little person,” said Mick Pope, then-Executive Director of the Elmhurst Park District.

“She was always trying to keep fees down to make park programs more affordable for families. That was her constant mission. No one in the community has exerted the effort to improve the community’s recreational offerings as much as Joanne. Her continued dedication was a quiet inspiration to the staff and board members who respected her sincere desire to serve the Elmhurst community in a distinguished manner.”

Under Joanne’s leadership, park facilities, programs and services blossomed and a full time director was hired. The Park District budget increased from $40,000 to $4 million.

“One of the things Mom was really proud of was the Park District staff.

I had heard her speak of this often, with great conviction,” said Carole.

York boys cross country team adapting to new normal Dukes looking for consistent fifth runner

Like the fall high school sports that are allowed to conduct seasons amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the York boys cross country team is adjusting to a new way of life.

“Our schedule was completely changed due to COVID,” York coach Charlie Kern said. “We can only compete within our conference with limited participation. Many of our kids will be unable to race more than once. This is detrimental to their development, but at least there is an opportunity to train.”

Kern is referencing York having its usual large number of runners throughout the program and because of COVID-19 rules, many will have

limited opportunities to compete in races.

“We can only put 40 kids in a meet at home,” he explained. “It might be less for the away meets due to their specific rules and regulations.”

Kern said the meets York hosts will feature a freshman-sophomore race that will have up to 20 runners from York and up to 20 runners from the visiting school.

The second race will feature the varsity runners with up to 20 from York and, again, up to 20 runners from the visiting school.

Kern added the virus itself continues to be top of mind. “The biggest adjustment is the fear that the virus will move through the team to someone — on the team or at home — who is unable to fight the virus and becomes critically ill,” he said. “Athletically, we have to adjust to not being in control of our own destiny.

At any point, the decision could be made to shut down athletics.”

In terms of the makeup of the 2020 varsity team, Colin Hill is back from the 2019 team that won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title and finished third in state. Hill, an all-WSC Silver selection, finished 51st individually at the Class 3A state meet in Peoria.

Key newcomers to the team include seniors Sam Ayers, Mickey Vreeland and junior Jeff Luka.

“Our strength will be in relying on each other,” Kern said. “We don’t have any stars. Colin Hill was 51st at the state meet last year. We are going to have to have a ridiculously low split on 1-5 to be a force.”

Junior Jonah Parayil has been a

big positive thus far during fall workouts. “Jonah has really impressed us,” Kern said. “He is in our top seven right now.”

Kern noted a major key this season will be the emergence of a consistent fifth runner. “Finding a solid fifth man,” said Kern when asked what the team needs to work on the most. “Like Uncle Sam, we are looking for a few good men and hope that the fifth man can close the gap on 1-4. Until that happens, we will be chasing after the other WSC Silver schools. I believe that man is on our team and I am looking forward to seeing who will step forward and become No. 5—the most important

runner on the team.”

Kern said Lyons Township is the best team in the WSC Silver right now. “Hinsdale Central has really good young talent,” he said. “Downers North was the state champion two years ago, and Glenbard West has the best individual. If we don’t find a fifth man, we could finish fifth in the conference. The keys to having a successful season are consistent training, tenacious competitors and the chance to compete.”

York, which has only five dual meets on its revised schedule, is scheduled to host Oak Park-River Forest tonight at 6 p.m. at Berens Park in Elmhurst.

Tennis is a popular sport at York High School.

Look no further for proof of that than the school’s girls tennis program that now boats 130 players. It’s the fourth year in a row coach Tres Heimann’s program has topped the 100-player mark.

“While this year is certainly unique in a number of ways, we are hoping to find camaraderie, friendship and united on our team, while also fulfilling our competitive edge, albeit across an abbreviated season,” Heimann said.

“Given the context of COVID-19, we are glad that we are able to have a season this year. We are very excited for this season because we have 130 players out for the team in the York girls tennis program. We also are very excited to have seven starters returning off last year’s team, many of whom have either two or three years of varsity experience. We will have a very deep team up and down the lineup card.”

York went 19-7 last year, took second in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division and took second at the sectional. The Dukes also won the eight-team Buffalo Grove invita-

tional.

Back for the Dukes is senior Gianna Nikoleit, who played No. 2 singles the previous three years. She took 17th in the state as a junior and made the all-state third team. She is a two-time state qualifier and has 89 career wins (31-8 last year).

Nikoleit takes over the No. 1 singles spot this year. “Gianna has worked extremely hard in the off-season on every part of her game,” Heimann said.

Junior Morgan Burnham went 22-5 last year and was a conference champion at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Keira Polach won 18 matches at No. 1 doubles last fall. Junior Ellie Duhig was all-conference at No. 2 doubles as a sophomore and won 18 matches. Senior Isabel Brown was all-conference at No. 4 doubles last year and also won 18 matches.

Senior Zoe Burkhardt had 21 wins last year, while senior Vivian Brunke was all-conference at No. 4 doubles and won 17 matches last year. Junior Gabby Felder also returns.

Key newcomers to the team include seniors Hannah Blanchette, Kate Kelley, Madeline Jeffery and Cara Well, along with sophomore Sasha Neidigh and freshmen Amelia Karr and Clare Hewitt.

Heimann said finalization of the doubles lineup is ongoing. “We are still looking at the doubles combinations as it is in the early going, but we will have very good options to try out. It should be a very exciting season.”

Heimann, in his 13th season with York’s girls team (236 career wins with the girls and 374 career wins with the boys and girls teams at York), pointed out that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, York is limited to a conference-only schedule this fall. The Dukes will play each team in the WSC Silver twice in a homeand-away series.

“The West Suburban Conference is always loaded,” the coach said.

“Hinsdale Central has won five of the last eight state championships.

Lyons Township and Glenbard West have finished in the top-10 teams in state the last two out of three seasons.

Oak Park-River Forest has a top-caliber team each year. We look forward to competing with all of these very good teams.”

York’s second-place WSC Silver finish last year was its best since 1984.

The Dukes were scheduled to face Hinsdale Central and Proviso West this week.

Evans at Marquette Former York girls track and field star Molly Evans is now part of the Marquette University women’s track and field team.

Since the outdoor season was canceled due to the pandemic, Evans final meet this season was the Big East indoor track and field championships in March. Evans set a personal record in the triple jump at the Big East meet. She took fourth with a jump of 37-5 1/4 feet. Evans took seventh in the same meet in 2019.

Evans was a 2019-2020 Big East all-academic honoree. She competed in five indoor events her sophomore year.

Evans set a then-personal record and placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 36-10 1/4 at the John Tierney Classic. She was seventh at 35-8 3/4 at the Notre Dame invitational. She took third at the Panther Tune-Up with a mark of 37-1 1/4.

“I am confident we will compete in every meet we attend,” Borel said.

York was averaging a strong 148.25 for nine holes as a team through late last week with Bartolone leading the way at 35.0 for nine. Jake Wool was at 37.0, while Bonelli was averaging 37.5, Polomsky 38.0 and Sutter 39.25.

IC Catholic Prep girls tennis team looking to take next step Cook, Gaudio, McNamara and O’Brien return for Knights

By Mike Miazga New IC Catholic Prep girls tennis coach Mike Pettineo has a lot to be excited about.

The Knights have a good mix of returning players and newcomers that are looking to take the program to the next level.

Back from a year ago are junior Fran Cook (No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles), senior Gia Gaudio (No. 1 singles, No. 1 doubles), junior Jackie McNamara (No. 2 singles, No. 1 doubles) and junior Maggie O’Brien (No. 2 doubles).

Key newcomers include freshman Allie Geiger (No. 2 singles, No. 1 doubles), junior Lauren Haubner (No. 2 doubles), junior Eva Calles (No. 3 doubles), sophomore Amy Sletten (No. 3 doubles), junior Cenza LoCascio, junior Lilly LoCascio, freshman Analisa Raffaelli, sophomore Jaz Cervantes, sophomore Eva Wojcik and sophomore Cassie Levy.

“Our team this year is excited to feature several newcomers in more ways than one, and we have so many opportunities for growth, and so many chances for new leaders to emerge and new competitors to break through,” Pettineo said.

Pettineo noted he has five underclassmen on the team, plus freshmen Geiger and Raffaelli.

“We have nine players who have not played on a high school ten-

nis team before,” the coach said.

“They have all worked tremendously hard to learn the game and develop a competitive edge in just a few practices in anticipation for match play vs. other schools. Their work ethic, especially in the face of such a dauntingly new endeavor, is truly meritorious.”

Pettineo said consistency and control always are huge factors in the success of newer tennis players “as they seek to minimize unforced errors and force opponents to strategize,” he said.

“Still, there’s a challenging balance to strike because players are expected to minimize unforced errors, while also keeping the pressure on with offensive plays such as serve-and-volley, drop shots and wide-passing shots down the line to counter poaching opponents.

Newcomers this year will certainly have their work cut out for them as they increase their control. More experienced players will be looking to build on their foundation of consistency and play more aggressively, looking to force more errors off their first serves and their returns of second serves.”

Breaking down the roster, Pettineo said experience will help on the singles front.

“We are very fortunate to have three returning players who are all very well prepared to fill singles positions, namely Fran, Gia

and Jackie,” he said. “Their experience under pressure, their strategic play and their consistency will serve them well. We are also happy to welcome freshman Allie to the team. She has shown great dedication to forcing every opponent to fight for every point. She is both consistent and very aggressive. Her consistency and tenacity — both mentally and physically — have already shown her important contributions to our pool of singles players.”

On the doubles front, Pettineo sees a fluid situation. “The lineup will undoubtedly morph and evolve over the course of the season as we try some different combinations in doubles and continue to evaluate the most compatible and complimentary partners. All three of our returning players in the singles pool, Fran Gia and Jackie, have extensive doubles experience as well, and can be expected to spend some time partnered up. And we have Maggie, a returning player who is a junior and has already played a great mentoring role alongside her newer teammates. We have the opportunity this season to grow these newer and younger players, including some players temporarily without volleyball.”

Pettineo said those hardworking athletes filling out the IC Catholic Prep doubles lineup includes Haubner, Calles and Sletten.

“There’s a great welcoming atmosphere and friendly attitude as newer players have been brought up to speed about key doubles strategies such as poaching, lobs, serve placement and passing shots.

These players have picked up a great deal in a very short period of time. I attribute much of that to their work ethic and mutually supportive attitudes.”

Pettineo said the team has goals targeting progress and its product as it works toward a successful season.

“Process will be a huge focus this year because we have so many newcomers requiring close attention to technique and strategy, with wining results coming when players successfully string together the process goals,” he said. “These goals include decreasing double faults to less than one per game served, increasing opponent’s forced errors off our serves to at least one per game served, increasing opponent’s forced errors off our returns to at least one per game returned, placing passing shots and lobs effectively enough to prevent volleys or overheads form static opposing net players, forcing opposing players to poach or play double-up or double-back during doubles.

“Our goal for the product at the end is to finish third in the conference. Backing this goal up, we

look to take each match one game at a time and, even in the face of great opposition, every player is expected to win at least one game per set, regardless of the ultimate match outcome. Tennis is a highly psychological game, and taking a game from an opponent can often be the first step to taking the set and ultimately the match. This year, in particular, is a growing year for IC Catholic Prep. We are working toward a third-place finish, but that product is really secondary to the process. We are looking to see individual growth throughout the season, balancing consistency and control with aggressive strategies that force errors.”

Pettineo lauded the work of IC Catholic Prep athletic director Michael Fahey in getting the Knights a strong playing schedule amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This required a great deal of rescheduling and reorganizing done by our athletic director, for which we are eternally grateful,” he said.

“Ultimately though, we still get to play all of the schools within our division and most of our conference so our competition will be fine. We really appreciate Michael Fahey for all the work he has put in to reorganize our schedule in light of COVID rules.”

IC Catholic Prep is scheduled to play Elmwood Park and St. Francis this week.

York golfers earn a victory

The York boys golf team competed against Downers Grove South and Willowbrook at Saturday’s three-team meet at Willow Crest Golf Club in Oak Brook. The Dukes won the team competition with their score of 321. Downers Grove South earned a team score of 327, while Willowbrook delivered a score of 359. Senior Sam Bartolone led York to the victory with his 18-hole score of 77 on the par-70 layout.

Junior Sam Wit (pictured at right) fired an 80 for the Dukes, while seniors Dylan Stockwell and Nate White both posted scores of 82. Junior Jake Wool and senior Frank Del Medico both carded scores of 87. Seniors Spano Civella (90) and Matt Pinkowski (91) rounded out York’s lineup.
