Governor Rauner signs Annie LeGere’s Law expansion Law now protects doctors, first responders from liability

By Paul DelGuidice For The Elmhurst Independent Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner traveled to Elmhurst on Tuesday, July 31 to sign SB2226 into law. The measure provides legal protection from liability to police officers, firefighters and other first responders who use epinephrine auto-in-

jectors (better known EpiPen’s) to immediately treat people suffering from acute allergic reactions. The drug requires a prescription from a doctor, and the law now also protects doctors who write ‘blanket prescriptions’ to municipalities for EpiPens. “This law will save countless

lives,” the Governor said. The bill signing was accompanied by an announcement that Elmhurst is the first Illinois municipality to receive a doctor’s prescription so each police vehicle can be equipped with EpiPens. The bill, now known as ‘Annie LeGere’s Law’ was championed

by Shelly and John LeGere, whose daughter Annie died from an allergic reaction suffered at a sleep-over party in 2015. The 13 year-old girl might have been saved if the police at that time had access to and training in administering EpiPens. Sponsored by Republican State Senator Chris Nybo, an Elmhurst

resident, and Democrat State Rep. Deb Conroy, Annie LeGere’s Law was hailed as a truly bi-partisan bill. EpiPen auto-injectors join Narcan anti-opioid overdose injectors as part of police emergency kits. Senator Nybo, in his address to attendees of the bill signing, stressed that police are the first to arrive in the majority of 911 emergency calls. The few extra minutes earlier than an ambulance or paramedics can arrive could make the difference in the outcome of an allergic reaction, said Nybo. All of Elmhurst’s police and fire dept. personnel have been trained on the use of the EpiPen auto injectors. The emergency kits are now in every responding vehicle. “Now the goal is to get similar laws in place across the nation,” said Gov. Rauner.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday, July 31 at Elmhurst City Hall and was attended by elected officials, including bill sponsors Sen. Chris Nybo (left) and Rep. Deb Conroy (behind the governor), as well as friends and family of Annie LeGere (Mom Shelly LeGere is to the left of Gov. Rauner).
