Getting a good start to the school year can be one key to success, whether it’s having the proper school supplies, or ensuring a student doesn’t incur absences due to the lack of required medical checks.

The Back to School Health, Career, and Resource Fair is intended to help District 205 families get off on the right foot.

This second annual fair is being put on by the Elmhurst Resource Collaboration (ERC), a consortium of local agencies and school personnel concerned with the welfare of Elmhurst’s more vulnerable families.

The fair will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the York High School Field House. It is free and open to the public.

More than 100 local agencies will be present at the fair either to provide families with valuable information or to provide services needed to start the school year.

For example, in the health section, families will have the opportunity to get hearing and vision checks through Midwestern University and the Lions Club. Mobile Care Chicago will provide physicals and immunizations. The DuPage County Health Departments “Smile Squad” will be there for dental checks. Sixteen agencies in all will be on site to address the physical and mental health needs of students.

City holds Special Kids Day for families Kids learn about fire, police; ‘vote’ for their favorite things the new family event was sponsored by the Special Kids Day organization and the City of Elmhurst.

Guests of all ages were able to meet firefighters, paramedics, police

officers and the public works team.

Story time was offered by the Elmhurst History Museum and Mayor Scott Levin was on hand to meet and greet all the guests. In City Council

Chambers, children were invited to choose their favorite mascot, building, and other things around town.

City Clerk Jackie Haddad-Tamer and City Treasurer joined Mayor Levin for a live meeting during which they counted the votes and announced the winners throughout the day.

The event was done in partnership with Elmhurst’s Special Kids Day organization.

Students will also have the chance to stock up on supplies for the year.

We Pop Up will be passing out donated school supplies. The Clothes Closet run by the First Methodist Church will have free gently used spirit wear for all the schools, and Warm Coats for Cool Kids will get kids signed up to receive a warm coat as winter approaches.

The career section of the fair will help students thinking about what’s next after high school. Representatives from the trades, professions, and the military will be on hand to talk to students about their futures.

Personnel from both the Mexican and Guatemalan Consulates will help families with legal or other affairs associated with their immigration status.

Both public and private resources abound in DuPage County, and the fair will strive to connect families to all those resources, so they have all they need to help their children thrive.

Music at Bethel presents ‘The Beethoven Cello Sonatas’ Part II

Summer Music at Bethel will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 7 at 5 p.m. with the final installment of the complete sonatas for cello by Beethoven featuring cellist Timothy Archbold and pianist Jeffrey Panko in performance, live at Bethel United Church of Christ in Elmhurst. Beethoven’s writing is categorized in three periods (early, middle, late) and these three sonatas are prime examples of his compositional style and marked development from each of these periods. Passionate, intimate, volcanic virtuosity, darkness and joy are just some of the words that can be used describing the many moods of Beethoven found in these works.

The second and final cello concert will feature Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 5, No. 2; Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op. 69; and Sonata No. 4 in C major, Op. 102, No. 1.

The concert will last approximately one hour without intermission. A wine reception will follow the concert.

Chicago, Skylight Theater, and as associate principal with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. He received his undergraduate degree in Music from the University of Melbourne, Australia then studied chamber music and cello performance in Germany for five years at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen and European Chamber Music Academy in Hannover. Archbold went on to receive his master’s degree in music from Wichita State University where he played with the Graduate String Quartet and the Wichita Symphony.

In his spare time, Archbold is an avid CrossFit athlete and trainer.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespassing July 22-July 27 A complainant in the 1000 block of S. Riverside states that unknown suspects entered the property and caused damage sometime between the above dates. The complainant was advised to contact police is he sees anyone on the property.

July 26 A victim near Route 83 and the Union Pacific Railroad reported that while driving northbound on Route 83 under the Union Pacific Railroad underpass, an object struck the top of her vehicle hood and windshield, causing dents and scratches.

July 18-July 25 A complainant reported that an unknown suspect(s) had vandalized a playground structure at Pioneer Park sometime between the above dates.

July 24 A victim near York and Third reported at 12:16 a.m. that an unknown suspect shot an air pistol or rifle causing damage to the victim’s vehicle. Officers checked the area but were met with no results.

July 22-July 23 A victim in the 100 block of Seminole told police that an unknown suspect(s) had shattered the rear window of her 2022 white Lexus while it was parked in her driveway sometime between the above dates.

July 21 A 21-year-old Wheaton man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 900 block of N. Virginia at 1:42 p.m.

Disturbance, domestic incident, domestic battery, disorderly conduct July 27 A 46-year-old Wauconda man was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and domestic battery subsequent to a report of a domestic battery at a hotel in the 900 block of Riverside at 6:40 a.m. Police said officers located the suspect in a hotel room which contained drug paraphernalia and cocaine.

July 20 Police said a suspect in the 600 block of S. Bryan was found to have posted an online message threatening the victim. The suspect was contacted and stated he had no intention of doing any harm to the victim. The suspect agreed to remove the post. No complaints are to be signed.

July 26 Jesus Barrientos, 42, of Stone Park, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage in the 600 block of N. Michigan at 7:42 a.m.

Brett Willis, 26, of Hillside, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage subsequent to a vehicle crash near St. Charles and Poplar at 5:06 p.m.

July 25 Dominique Ellison, 30, of Bellwood, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a single-vehicle accident near York and Crestview at 12:48 a.m.

Dennis Roach, 36, of Chicago, was charged with driving while license suspended, illegal transportation of open alcohol, disobeying a stop sign and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and South at 8:18 p.m.

July 24 Vincent Davis, 24, of Riverdale, was charged with DUI, two counts of disobeying a traffic control device, illegal transportation of open alcohol and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Arthur at 1:21 a.m.

July 23 Kassandra Olvera, 26, of Glendale Heights, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, illegal transportation of open alcohol, and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop in the 600 block of W. North at 10:14 p.m.

July 21 Joanna Pruszynski, 26, of Downers Grove, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and possession of alcohol subsequent to a vehicle crash near Palmer and Schiller at 7:24 p.m.

Endangering the life of a child July 23 Miriam Rodriguez, 42, of Addison was charged with endangering the life of a child, criminal damage to property, failure to give information after striking property, driving while license suspended, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance in the 800 block of N. Addison at 7:10 p.m.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported six incidents of possession of cannabis by either the driver of a vehicle or a passenger: Shamar S. Steward, 18, of Lynwood, near York and Industrial at 7:55 a.m.

July 21; Cortaya Patton, 20, of Bellwood, near York and Orchard at 11:15 a.m. July 22; Aiden Ocampo, 18, of Hanover Park, in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer at 7:34 p.m. July 22; Jaharri Jackson, 24, of Chicago, near Berteau and North at 10:40 p.m. July 22; Jamari Goodman, 26, of Chicago, near North and Villa at 1:34 a.m. July 23; and Lamon A. Sullivan II, 26, of Calumet City, near York and Industrial at 12:17 a.m. July 28.

Suspicious circumstances July 23 A complainant in the 600 block of S. Linden reviewed home surveillance footage which showed an unknown suspect looking through a clear glass door inside the house and taking photos of the complainant’s home. The unknown subject leaves the area on a white or silver bicycle.

July 21 A reporting officer met with a complainant in the 400 block of N. Larch at 5:03 p.m. who reported observing an unknown Hispanic male looking underneath vehicles in the parking lot.

The unknown suspect was accompanied by an unknown Hispanic female in a white SUV. When confronted, the male suspect left the lot on a blue sports motorcycle and the female followed in the white SUV. The reporting officer did not observe anything suspicious or missing from the vehicles in the parking lot.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery July 27 Otha McClendon, 56, of Chicago, was charged with burglary and retail theft at a store in the 900 block of S. York at 6:47 a.m. Police said officers located McClendon at the above location who had already been suspected of several thefts here in the area. The suspect was seen leaving store with merchandise, according to police.

July 26 Cordon Rush, 19, of Hillside, was charged with felony possession of a stolen vehicle at 10:51 a.m. Police said an officer located a suspicious vehicle at a food store. The vehicle was found to be stolen out of Bellwood on July 25, according to police. Police said Rush was located inside the store, placed under arrest and transported to the police station.

May 15-July 25 Identity theft was reported at Fellows Court.

A victim told police her checking account was compromised as there were unauthorized charges, withdrawals, and deposits made sometime between the above dates. The victim closed her account and is working with the credit union for possible reimbursement.

July 24 Nicholas Santiago, 52, of Elmhurst, was charged with two counts of theft near Route 83 and St. Charles at 3:43 p.m. Police said the suspect was fighting with a victim and stealing her two backpacks. According to police, he fled the scene and was involved in a traffic crash a short distance away.

Retail theft was reported at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at 3:42 a.m. A complainant reported an unknown suspect described as a black male took five packs of cigarettes and chips without paying. The suspect left the store on foot, last seen running southbound on York.

Officers checked the area but were met with no results.

July 10-July 24 Theft was reported in the 700 block of N. Parker. A victim related while in the hospital, unknown person(s) removed two gold bracelets, three checks and a new I-Phone from her bedroom sometime between the above dates.

July 19-July 23 Deceptive practice was reported in the 500 block of W. Crockett. A victim received a message from an unknown suspect claiming to be a popular wrestler. The victim sent several pictures of himself to the suspect and was asked to send his debit card information to prevent the photos from being distributed.

July 21 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of N. Walnut at 4:16 p.m. A victim learned that a fraudulent check was cashed from his bank account. The funds were initially withdrawn from his account but later reimbursed after his bank determined it was fraudulent.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at 5:07 p.m. A reporting officer met with a complainant who stated an unknown suspect exited the store with several bottles of unpaid liquor. He was seen leaving the area in a blue or silver Chevrolet Impala with a driver waiting.

Theft of catalytic converters

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported three incidents of catalytic converters being removed and stolen from a vehicle at the following locations: in the 800 block of N. York sometime between July 20 and July 21; in the 300 block of N. Route 83 at 7:52 p.m. July 23; and in the Elmhurst University parking lot sometime between July 21 and July 22.

Unlawful use of a weapon

July 27 Latifah Curry, 28, of Maywood, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of cannabis, driving with suspended registration and no insurance near North and Villa at 8:11 p.m. Police said Curry was found to have no insurance, cannabis and a loaded firearm in the vehicle.

Wayne C. Hoepner, 85 Wayne C. Hoepner, of Naperville, formerly of Elmhurst, passed away July 25, 2022 in Naperville at the age of 85. Wayne was the devoted husband to Barbara Hoepner, nee Becker, for 65 years; dear dad to Candy (Tom) Racine, Cherie (Scott) Palmer; beloved grandpa to Jason (Melissa) Racine, Jodi Racine, Sara (John) Butera, Alec (Brittany) Palmer; loving great-grandpa to Harlie, Camden, Shane, Griffin, Ella, RylieAnn and Declan; dear brother of Lorraine (Dick) Baker, and dear friend to many. He was proceeded in death by his sisters; Bernice Jantzen, Marion Hoepner, Irene Helsten. Wayne was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church and School, where he was a lifelong member. He served as a trustee and volunteer for many years. Wayne graduated from Glenbard High School in 1954. After graduation Wayne served his country by joining the National Guard. He spent most of his career in the auto industry and was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Elmhurst. Wayne was an active Elmhurst Volunteer Firefighter for 38 years. Wayne liked to spend his weekends at their cottage in Michigan. He was happiest when he was outdoors. Wayne always said “everything was fantastic,” because he was always “fantastic” to all of his family and friends. Mr. Fantastic will be sorely missed. Patricia Ann Masters, 92 Patricia Ann Masters, of Villa Park, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 24, 2022. Patricia was born on Nov. 12, 1930, the third of seven children, to George and Kathleen Madison of Villa Park. Patricia married the late William Masters on October 3, 1953. In 1964 they chose Elmhurst to raise their family and remained there for more than 50 years.

Patricia worked for Coca Cola, Oakbrook Nursing Home, Montgomery Ward Signature Group, and J. C. Penney’s, as well as numerous temp jobs throughout her life. She was a lifelong learner and enjoyed taking classes at College of DuPage such as voice lessons, jewelry making, photography, and accounting. Patricia participated in several Senior Olympics and was an avid member at the YMCA for decades.

Patricia lived in the Chicagoland area all her life and delighted in the arts in many forms: visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, attending music theater at Drury Lane and other venues, and Grant Park for the Summer Concert Series. Buckingham Fountain and the lakefront were regular excursions.

Pat, as she was known to friends, transferred that enthusiasm for creativity to homemaking as she raised her three children. She enjoyed hosting family celebrations and crafting memorable birthday cakes. She was a keen garage sale customer, planning out her course the night before.

However, when “corneal arcus” develops in individuals under the age of 40 (“arcus juvenilis”), it is recommended that patients get blood tests to determine their blood cholesterol levels. Anniversary thoughts, Part 2: Don’t hold back

“Tell them you love them over and over again. Tell them too much, and never too little, for the time we have is short, but the love we have is endless.” – Dane Thomas This week would have (should have) been my 35th wedding anniversary.

I guess it is my 35th wedding anniversary. I’m still married, albeit without a husband. A widow (deep heavy sigh). He died shortly after our 33rd anniversary. But still, I remember, and I celebrate. No, I just remember.

We’d planned to do something “big” on this anniversary. We never felt like we had the chance before.

Fifteen, twenty, even twenty-five— we let them all pass us by.

We were always too young, or too poor, or too busy raising kids to spend the time or money for anything for just the two of us. It seemed too extravagant.

We took lots of family vacations, but they were planned around our four kids.

We always spent time together, but it typically involved practices, games or performances (of the childhood variety). We spent many weekends away from home in hotels—for tournaments and supervising kids in the pool.

They were good years—building a family, raising children. We were happy to put special times for just the two of us on hold because we had all of our future for us as a couple. We married young. We were young. There’d be plenty of time.

Or so we thought.

We thought we’d do something big this year. He’d always promised to take me to Europe. But it could have been so many things: a long weekend in Las Vegas, a trip to a secluded cabin in the mountains, the beach. Anything—something.

It didn’t matter what. It would be a rare splurge on just the two of us.

Instead, now, it’s just me. And I have some advice.

Don’t wait. Don’t wait. Don’t wait.

Please. Don’t. Wait.

There are always logical reasons to wait. To put off the things you really want to do with your spouse because don’t have enough money or time or whatever you think

you need to do all the things you want to do. Please take note of my circumstance.

You never know when your own later may no longer exist. Take the trip. Go on the vacation. Fish for salmon in Alaska. Cruise the Mediterranean. Hula in Hawaii.

Surf in South Africa. Volunteer in to build a school or a church. Go on safari. Visit a nude beach. Buy that hobby farm. Plan an extravagant night out on the town. Buy her the diamond. Get him those golf clubs.

Do it now.

My husband and I passed by anniversary number 30 and thought we had to wait until number 35 to celebrate something grand because 35 was the next big number.

Take it from me: numbers don’t matter. Life matters. Now matters.

Celebrate now. Celebrate this year, next year and the year after.

Heck, celebrate more often than that. Celebrate always. Every day.

Unabashedly.

Because, at then end of it all, not too many of us regret all the good and joyous things we did in life. We don’t regret the happy memories or songs we sang together.

What we might regret, and often regret, are the spectacular things we didn’t do. Even the mundane things we didn’t get a chance to do. Those that we thought we’d get to—some day—but didn’t because time ran out My best advice? You never know when time will run out. So do it now. Experience to the fullest.

Enjoy. Love. Create a memory worth keeping. Let your husband (or wife) take you to Europe.

Make it spectacular.

Hearing examines practices, profits of gun industry

Raja Krishnamoorthi Last week, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing examining the practices and profits of the gun industry in the wake of the recent mass shootings, the increase in general gun violence across the country, and the stunning revelation that gun manufacturers have made more $1 billion in profits from assault weapons in the past decade alone.

During the hearing, I asked Marty Daniel, CEO of Daniel Defense, about a recent tweet the company sent out featuring an image of a sniper rifle on a rooftop aimed at a person sitting in a parked car.

Despite claims from gun companies that they market their weapons for hunting and self-defense purposes, it is clear that neither is happening in the company’s promotional tweet—it is a shooter on a roof preparing to open fire on an unsuspecting person.

The disturbing nature of this ad is magnified when considering that it comes just weeks after the Highland Park tragedy in which the gunman unleashed a hail of bullets from a

rooftop position, murdering seven people and paralyzing a child from the waist down.

I also questioned Antonia Okafor, the national director of Women’s Outreach for Gun Owners of America, noting that she called for abolishing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) in a 2020 social media post.

Despite its demonization by some extremists, the ATF plays a critical role in saving lives and combatting gun violence. In 2020, the ATF National Tracing Center assisted over 8,000 law enforcement agencies and processed almost 500,000 requests that potentially saved countless lives. ATF’s tracing center also led to the swift identification and apprehension of the Highland Park shooter before he could claim even more innocent lives.

Opposition to CP-KCS train merger On July 25, I led a bipartisan press conference with local elected officials at the Hanover Park Metra Train Station to voice our opposition to the proposed $31 billion merger of Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS) railroads.

If the merger were to go through, the CP rail line that runs between Bensenville and Elgin would see

its rail traffic more than triple, causing Metra commuter train delays and negatively impacting local communities and residents along the line. The CP freight trains, which can be as long as two miles, would have drastic and potentially dangerous consequences for local communities.

For example, the town of Hanover Park is essentially bisected by the rail line, with fire and emergency services on the north side of the lines, leaving the south side cut off if a miles-long freight train is rolling through. This would be on top of the added environmental, noise, and pedestrian safety concerns that come with more frequent rail traffic.

While many of these negative impacts can be partially mitigated through the new construction of overpasses and underpasses for pedestrian and vehicle traffic, the companies have offered only $10 million towards the effort, a small fraction of the costs of such structures.

City Treasurer Dan Curran and City Clerk Jackie Haddad-Tamer joined Mayor Levin for a live meeting during which they counted the votes in each category and announced the winners. In this particular “meeting,” the Mascot of the Year was chosen from among Sammie the Squirrel, Coyote Cathy and Freddie the Fox. After tying with Sammie the Squirrel, a “recount” determined that Freddie the Fox was officially declared the Mascot of the Year in the City of Elmhurst.

Meeting the mayor

Michelle Zellinger and Alex Hamilton had their photo taken with Elmhurst Mayor Scott Levin on Sunday, July 31 at Special Kids Day – City Works. Michelle is 22, while Alex is 23 and both enjoyed meeting the mayor up close and personal.

This little fellow made a new friend at Special Kids Day – City Works on Sunday, July 31 – a service dog that didn’t mind a pat on the head. As for this young man, his interests clearly vary based on his attire. He’s wearing Michael Jordan sneakers, an Elmhurst police officer “badge,” and his face is painted with baseball items like a glove, a ball and a bat.

Thanks for a grant from the Explore Elmhurst program and The Driskill Foundation, the Elmhurst Art Museum held “Family Day: Patterns and Nature” on Saturday, July 30. Exhibiting artist Raul Ortiz led a collage-making activity with fabrics and midcentury patterns. Families with kids of all ages were invited to sit down and use the supplies provided to make their own collage art to take home with them.

If you missed it, another special event is scheduled for this coming Saturday, Aug. 6 from 1-4 p.m. called “Family Day: Animal Architects.”

Guests will be invited to design animal homes using natural and artistic materials. This event is generously hosted by The Conservation Foundation. No registration is required, kids are free.

While at the Elmhurst Art Museum which is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, be sure to view the current exhibition, “Nature’s Blueprints: Biomimicry in Art and Design,” which closes Sunday, Aug. 14.

Interactive learning stations demonstrate how nature is incredible, how we can learn from it and can all be inventors. The exhibition includes an installation by Chicago architect Alicia Ponce about how her architectural structures emulate patterns, forms, and processes found in nature.

Library celebrates summer reading

Families enjoy party on library lawn

On Saturday, July 30, the Elmhurst Public Library hosted an outdoor party with crafts, games, and other activities outdoors on the south lawn of the library to celebrate the Summer Reading Program. There was a popcorn wagon, a bouncy house, an arts and crafts table and lots of lawn-sized games to be played outdoors.

All summer long, participants logged their reading and picked up prizes at the library or off-site at local schools. The children’s Summer Reading theme, “Reading Is So Deli-

cious,” inspired a whimsical transformation of the Kids’ Library, including food-related décor such as giant pieces of candy suspended from the ceiling and faux farmstands like “Peter’s Pickled Veggies.”

Other events attended by kids over the summer included Lettuce Make Snacks Together, Candy Science, and Sew a Breakfast Plushie, as well as a Community Food Drive, done in collaboration with the Elmhurst History Museum, to support the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry.

Successful summer for York football team Dukes have high hopes entering 2022 season

It was a productive summer for the York football team. Coach Mike Fitzgerald, whose Dukes squad is coming off an 8-2 season and a playoff appearance in 2021, was thrilled with what he saw during the recently wrapped up summer session. “It’s been really good,” he said. “We had a good offseason in the weight room and now the kids have been out doing football stuff. It’s been great. We basically have been practicing and working out. The kids have been working hard and progressing well.

It’s been an overall good summer.”

York recently wrapped up the summer slate with an event at Prospect High School and two final days of camp.

“The kids will get a nice break now to recharge and we’ll be ready to go August 8 (first day of fall practice),” Fitzgerald said.

Earlier in the summer, York had success in a pair of 7-on-7 events.

The Dukes brought two teams to a 7-on-7 competition at Northern Illinois University and both squads went 5-0 there. The Dukes also won the Fox Valley 7-on-7 tournament

championship at St. Charles North by going 6-0. “With the 7-on-7s, offensively we have been working on route timing with the quarterback and the receivers and making sure we are good assignment-wise with spacing and timing and execution,” Fitzgerald explained. “Defensively, it puts our guys in a tough spot with no pass rush. You have to lock down and cover and understand coverage schemes. It’s a lot of alignment and assignment and execution. Football has a lot more to it than passing, but it helps to get good at passing on offense, as well as work on passing coverages on defense.”

Fitzgerald reports there are around 90 players on the York varsity this season. “We have a big group,” he said. “That’s way up from last year.

We have had some great competition for spots. It’s a good core group of seniors and a talented junior group that went 9-0 as sophomores. There will be a lot of competition at different spots. Watching the team come together has been fun.”

Fitzgerald offered a few theories as to why the roster size has bumped up to the level it has this summer.

“Last year, I want to say we were a

little over 70 kids. It speaks to the kids having a good experience in the program and them talking among each other,” he said. “Kids have joined the program over time, and then I think some good groups have developed at the youth level that have stayed together and have had a good experience all the way through and are sticking with it. Winning helps, too. People want to be part of a winning organization. People see the success we have had and the crowds on Friday night and want to be part of it.”

York also went to a team camp at Olivet Nazarene University. “We went for three days and two nights — kind of a team retreat camp,” Fitzgerald said. “It was a nice time.

We saw two classes come together on the trip.”

Fitzgerald saw plenty of positives on the individual side of things as well, starting on offense with the likes of Charlie Specht (Sr., wide receiver), Matt Vezza (Sr., quarterback), Kelly Watson (Sr., running back), Jake Melion (Jr., running back) and Anthony Mancini (Sr., tight end), along with offensive lineman Dominic Begora (Sr.). “Quite a

few kids have had good summers,” Fitzgerald said. “Charlie Specht at receiver has done a very good job and Matt Vezza at quarterback.

Kelly Watson and Jake Melion are two talented running backs. Tight end Anthony Mancini has done a great job in the passing and running games. Dominic Begora on the offensive line is a senior coming back who has taken on a lot of leadership responsibility and done a really good job.”

On defense, Fitzgerald saw good things from John Renier (Sr., defensive line), Ashton Nawrocki (Sr., defensive line), David Loch (Sr., linebacker), Cole Ostendorf (Jr., inside linebacker), Matt Sutter (Sr., free safety), Reece Richardson (Sr., defensive backfield) and Jack Korzeniowski (Sr., defensive backfield).

“On the defensive line, John Renier has done a really good job,” Fitzgerald pointed out. “Ashton Nawrocki is on the defensive line after playing linebacker last year and has done a really good job with that transition. David Locke is a returning all-conference player and is a very good football player. Cole Ostendorf is a junior and a very tal-

ented kid as well. Matt Sutter at free safety has done really well at those 7-on-7 competitions and at practice.

He’s a really crafty kid with great football instincts. Reece Richardson and Jack Korzeniowski also have done very well.”

Fitzgerald has noticed a different vibe with the squad coming off a successful 2021 season that saw the Dukes erase a long playoff drought.

“Yes, the guys are hungry to make a run in the playoffs,” the coach said. “Expectations have gone up.

The kids are aware that we will not sneak up on anybody anymore. We have to play with a different sense of urgency and raise the standard even higher. We have a target on our back now. It’s different than in years past where we were not given credit and could sneak up on everybody. It’s not the case anymore. We have to be able to bring it every week, particularly in this league (West Suburban Conference Silver Division).

Elmhurst University baseball team cited for academic excellence The Elmhurst University baseball team recently earned its seventh consecutive Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association. The Bluejays were one of 156 NCAA Division III institutions to earn the honor. Elmhurst has received the award for seven straight seasons, earning the distinction every year since the program started.

To qualify for an ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, programs are required to be a high school or collegiate team, the program’s head coach must be a current ABCA member, and the team must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 (no rounding allowed) on a 4.0 scale during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Considering the severe consequences this merger and the resulting tripling of freight traffic would have upon local communities, my colleagues and I called upon the Surface Transportation Board to hear directly from those who will be affected most by this proposed agreement, before coming to a decision.

Panel discussion on price gouging by major corporations contributing to high food costs I recently traveled to the NCH Community Resource Center in Palatine to hold a panel discussion with local community leaders at the Greater Chicago Food Depository on how food price increases are affecting the health and well-being of working families in the district and across Illinois.

The demand at food banks throughout the state is increasing as donation levels have simultaneously declined due to the same rising food costs impacting people’s ability to donate money and food items of their own.

While supply chain issues and general inflation remain significant factors in the dramatic increase in food prices and the cost of other goods in recent months, I am concerned that some major companies are also taking advantage of the situation by using predatory business practices to drive up the costs of goods for consumers to boost their own profits.

As chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, I sent a letter to the four largest meat processing companies, requesting information related to the increasing costs of meat. The profit margins for these four companies have increased by 300 percent since the onset of the pandemic, with net incomes skyrocketing by 500 percent, because the price increases, they’ve foisted upon consumers greatly exceed their own cost increases.

To address another driver of inflation and shortages, I’ve also launched an investigation into price gouging by the shipping industry.

For example, CMA CGM, one of the largest shipping companies in the world, recorded $11 billion in profit in the first nine months of 2021, more than the company made during the prior decade combined, as their own cost increases were dwarfed by the price hikes they pushed on their customers, driving up the prices of shipping anything, and thus what customers pay at the store.

While my investigations continue, there is no question that these types of predatory business practices are harming consumers and further fueling inflation. They must be stopped, and these companies must be held accountable.
