EWAN’s 5th ‘Cue for a Cause fires up the grills on Sunday Annual fundraiser becomes a popular Labor Day tradition

In what has quickly become a Labor Day Weekend tradition in the Elmhurst community, the fifth annual ‘Cue for a Cause, presented by the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN) is back. This year’s event takes place Sunday, Sept. 1 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. in the municipal lot on Vallette, just east of York St., behind the Knights of Columbus Hall. Admission is free.

Registered competitors are no doubt perfecting their barbecue techniques in anticipation of the chance to walk away with bragging rights and a prize. First, second and third place grillers will be recognized in the categories of ribs, chicken and sauce. The team with the highest combined score among all three categories will earn the top prize of ‘Cue for a Cause Grand Champion.

Among the invited judges, all of whom are local, is Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley.

The ‘Cue isn’t just for competitors,

so the public is encouraged to come out and watch what happens when competitors go toe-to-toe, or “grillto-grill.” Four live bands will provide musical entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening.

Elmhurst’s own “Barbeque Jim” Lawshe will fire up the grill to offer a full range of items to guests from hot dogs to burgers to pork on a stick.

Even a veggie burger will be available. Beer and wine will be available for purchase and the root beer float stand is always a hit – among kids and adults alike. There will be a dedicated kids area with games for the younger set, while adults check out the items in the raffle tent.

While competitors can’t serve their ribs or chicken to the crowds, people will have the opportunity to taste the sauces and vote on their favorite. Prizes are awarded at the end of the event, so stick around to the very end to learn who’s BBQ was the BEST! The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network is a local not-for-profit dedicated to serving Elmhurst neighbors in need of financial help during a difficult time. Since its start in 1997, it has given over a million dollars in assistance and has provided countless residents peace of mind.

SHE celebrates 10th Year Anniversary Single Mothers Support Group kicks off new season with Spa Day

Sisters Helping Each Other (SHE), the Single Mothers Support Group, has announced the kick-off of its 10th year this September. When they started in 2009, they had 15 participants at their first meeting. Over the past 10 years, more than 350 women have participated in the group.

“Our vision is that we would like to have all single mothers be aware of the resources that are available through the Single Mothers Support Group,” said

Group Director Jane Loerop. “This can be done by going to our web page at elmhurstcrc.org/she and by attending our SHE meetings.”

The women who attend SHE enjoy the fellowship and friendship. They are united by the various challenges of being a single mother and find the group a safe place to connect with others who understand the difficulties of raising children alone. The meetings cover topics that are applicable to single mothers. Guests find the programs both educational and inspirational. In addition, the women exchange phone numbers and set up play dates for their children as well as coffee dates for

Most months, SHE meets on the second Sunday of each month, except for September, when SHE begins on Sept. 15 at 12:15 p.m. in the Garden Room at the Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Rd. Mothers are encouraged to bring their children from infants through 12 years of age for a free luncheon with their children. Free childcare goes from at 1-2:30 p.m. so the mothers can meet on their own.

DPZ Committee discusses upcoming cannabis legalization Community members who weigh in cite many negatives

On the evening of Monday, Aug. 26, the Development Planning & Zoning Committee of the Elmhurst City Council held a public meeting to discuss the possibility of a City-wide ordinance regarding the upcoming legalization of cannabis, which will be effective January 1, 2020.

Signed into law by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker on June 25, Public Act 101-0027 created the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which legalizes the possession and private use of cannabis for Illinois residents older than 21 years of age, after the first of the year.

According to a document released by the Illinois Municipal League, municipalities may not restrict the private consumption of cannabis as authorized by law, but it prohibits the use of cannabis in public places, schools and child care facilities, among other locations.

Municipalities may adopt and enforce local ordinances to regulate possession and public consumption of cannabis so long as the regulations and penalties are consistent with the Act. The Act preserves local zoning authority and directly authorizes municipalities to prohibit (opt out) or significantly limit the location of cannabis businesses by ordinance.

This would include the authority to opt out of either commercial production or distribution (dispensaries) of

adult-use cannabis within their jurisdiction.

Municipalities also may enact zoning ordinances and regulations designating the time, place, manner and number of cannabis business operations, including minimum distances between locations through conditional use permits.

Residents offer their own findings At press time, the Independent was able to obtain comments from residents who had submitted comments in writing to the City.

Elmhurst resident Sarah Dacre said she did not support storefront sale of recreational marijuana in Elmhurst and worries that Elmhurst will be the “recreational marijuana retail guinea pig” of the western suburbs.

“We are already located along the heroin highway,” Dacre said. “Our location may draw in a darker group of people than those just looking for a weekend smoke.”

“As much as the industry claims that sales will be limited to those over 21, data show that in areas that have legalized marijuana, usage rates among youth ages 12-18 have also increased,” said Kim Knable, who cited information from learnaboutsam.org and others. “Marijuana is harmful to the developing brain.

Its use is associated with an increase in school-drop out rates, depression, and psychosis. Marijuana edibles are often sold in kid-appealing versions such as colorful sodas, gummies and cookies.”

Resident Dana Udovich offered these statistics about other states that have legalized cannabis: • The percentage of Washington state traffic fatalities where the driver tested positive for recent pot use more than doubled the year legal pot sales began. (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 2016) • Hospitalizations related to marijuana have increased 70% since legalization in Colorado.

• For 2 years in a row, Colorado has led the nation among 12- to 17-year-olds trying marijuana for the first time. (National Survey of Drug Use and Health, State Estimates, 2015-2016) Some additional noteworthy points: • A 2018 study from Centennial Institute in Colorado indicates that for every $1 in tax revenue generated by recreational marijuana sales, there are $4.50 in mitigating expenses to the taxpayers of Colorado in the form of increases in mental and physical healthcare expenses, auto accidents (including fatalities), increased need for law enforcement, increased car

insurance premiums, need for more training and education, increased homelessness, increased school drop-out rates, as well as many other areas. (ccu.edu/centennial/policy-briefs/marijuana-costs/) “Marijuana sales are a cash only business,” Knable said. “As such, many stores and customers have large amounts of cash on hand. These shops and customers are a target for crime.

“I think the future of the youth of our community is more important than the potential tax revenue that this can bring in. Elmhurst voted in the past to not allow video gambling because is was not a net benefit to the city.”

Cupola to be dedicated

The cupola that sat high atop the former Elmhurst Memorial Hospital building since the 1920s has been restored and will be placed in the Darrell L. Whistler Memorial Prairie Garden behind Community Bank of Elmhurst, 330 W. Butterfield Rd. As a dedication, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception held there on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. The public is welcome.

On Saturday, Aug. 24, Elmhurst Police were alerted to a school related internet threat. The posting had a picture of body armor referring to it as a new school uniform on Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Prep (I.C.C.P.).

Detectives were able to determine the origin of the post and found that it was in response to another threatening post from a different student at I.C.C.P. Detectives learned that the first threatening post was a result of conflict. The post was shared and several other teens became involved in the discussion.

Detectives have identified the teens involved and have met with their parents and are working with school officials for further action.

Based on the investigation, police believe that this was an isolated incident and the students who were involved pose no further credible threat to others. The postings have been removed and there will be an increased police presence around the school tomorrow with uniformed and plainclothes officers.

Elmhurst Police would like to remind students and parents that these threats are taken seriously by the police and school officials. The consequences for these actions are enforced and students should be mindful of what they post.

EGC plans 5th annual Garden Party at Ray Graham

Elmhurst Garden Club (EGC) will host their 5th Annual Ray Graham Garden Party Fundraiser to benefit the Ray Graham Association’s Elmhurst Community Learning Center for People with Disabilities on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 5-7 p.m. at the Learning Center located at 420 W. Madison.

There is no cost to attend but free will donations to Elmhurst Community Learning Center are greatly appreciated.

Scholar Yousef Casewit to give al-Ghazali Lecture at Elmhurst College The Revival Of Sufism: Current Directions In Contemporary Islam Yousef Casewit is the chair of Islamic studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School and author of the award-winning book, The Mystics of al-Andalus. On Monday, Sept. 23 beginning at 7:30 p.m., he will present “The Revival of Sufism: Current Directions in Contemporary Islam,” this year’s al-Ghazali Lecture in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Casewit’s research interests include the intellectual history of North Africa and al-Andalus, and Muslim perceptions of the Bible.

He was formerly a humanities research fellow at New York University, Abu Dhabi, where he complet-

ed The Mystics of al-Andalus. Born in Egypt and raised in Morocco, he has traveled throughout the Islamic world, and has studied with Muslim scholars in Morocco, Syria and Mauritania.

The al-Ghazali Lecture Series honors the great Muslim scholar and theologian Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, who was born in Iran in 1058 but spent much of his life as a teacher in Baghdad and as a wandering ascetic. His prolific writings on religion, philosophy and sufism had lasting influence on scholars from a variety of faith traditions.

Police beat Burglary

Aug. 14 Attempted commercial burglary was reported on the 1000 block of So. Route 83 at about 11:30 p.m. According to the police report, a complainant related he observed the metal strapping for the chain link fence had been cut but entry was not gained into the yard. Upon reviewing the security footage, a black male in his late 20s wearing a dark color t-shirt and red pants with white striping down the side, was observed looking into the front glass doors. A black Jeep Cherokee was seen exiting the area, a short time later.

Aug. 15 Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported on the 500 block of W. Grand, where unknown suspect(s) reportedly removed an iPod and GPS from a victim’s van. The victim believes his vehicle was locked at the time.

Aug. 16 Attempted burglary to a motor vehicle was reported on the 500 block of So. Prospect Ave. According to the police report, at approximately 3:25 p.m., a victim was woken to the sound of his car alarm. He went out to check the car but did not observe anything out of the ordinary. When he awoke in the morning he noticed damage to the driver’s side door. No entry was gained.

Aug. 17 Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported on the 100 block of So. Fairfield at about 12:20 p.m. According to the police report, subsequent to neighborhood interviews, a victim stated their unlocked Chrysler Sebring was parked in their driveway and the center console contents were rifled through. The vehicle’s keys, which the owner left under the floor mat, were found in the adjacent neighbor’s front yard. Nothing else appeared to be missing from the vehicle.

Aug. 18 Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported on the 100 block of So. Fairfield at about 12:15 p.m. According to the police report, a victim stated that unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked Buick Enclave, which was parked on the street in front of his home. The contents of the center console were rifled through, but nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle.

Attempted burglary to a motor vehicle was reported on the 300 block of W. Alexander Blvd. at about 8 a.m. According to the police report, a victim stated that unknown person(s) apparently entered his unlocked Toyota Highlander and Subaru Crosstrek while they were parked in his driveway. Nothing appeared to be missing from either of the vehicles.

Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported on the 100 block of So. Fairfield at about 11:30 a.m. According to the police report, the victim stated that an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked Chevrolet S10 pickup and Chevrolet Suburban. The suspect(s) rifled through the contents of the center console and glove boxes. No items were missing from the vehicles.

Aug. 20 Burglary was reported at a business on the 600 block of W. North Ave. at about 5:15 a.m.

According to the police report, officers responded to an alarm call at the business and upon arrival, discovered a pane of plexiglas on an overhead garage door had been kicked in.

After a search of the interior of the business, it was determined that nothing had been disturbed.

Consumption, curfew Aug. 21 Five juveniles were arrested near North & Melrose at about 11:45 p.m. According to the police report, subsequent to a seat belt enforcement zone, the juvenile offenders were found to be out after curfew. Juvenile #1 was

Criminal damage to property or vehicle Aug. 14 Criminal damage to property was reported at Lake & Grand, at about 10:30 p.m. According to the police report, a victim stated that while driving on Lake Street, a blue Porsche convertible pulled up on the driver’s side of his vehicle. The suspect yelled out and threw something hard at the victim’s vehicle, causing scratches.

Aug. 19 Criminal damage to a vehicle was reported on the 100 block of E. Schiller at about 12 midnight. According to the police report, the victim relates unknown person(s) scratched the rear driver’s side door of her black Cadillac Escalade while it was parked in the Schiller parking garage.

Disorderly conduct

Aug. 15 Lance Alexander, 57, of Maywood, was arrested near Orchard & York at about 3:10 p.m. According to the police report, officers responded for a subject down on the ground.

The offender was located, found to be intoxicated and he was in possession of alcohol. The offender was charged with disorderly conduct; public intoxication, possession of open alcohol on a public way, and was released.

Jack Jandick, 53, no address given, was arrested for disorderly conduct and public intoxication after officers found him lying on the ground on the 200 block of So. Rte. 83. Officers found him to be intoxicated and charged him with the above offenses.

Aug. 18 Disorderly conduct and a battery investigation took place on the 300 block of No. York at about 11 a.m. According to the police report, officers responded for the report of a road rage incident. The complainant related the suspect nearly hit his car and, after the subjects exchanged gestures and words, the suspect struck the complainant several times. The suspect denied making any threats and related the complainant approached him as if he wanted to fight. Due to no visible injuries and both parties refusing to sign complaints, no arrests were made.

The offender was charged with Aggravated DUI, DUI, driving while license revoked, disobeying a traffic control signal, improper lane usage, and was taken to DuPage County Jail.

Aug. 18 Daniel Romero, 35, of Addison, was arrested near Walnut & Lake at about 1:45 a.m. According to the police report, subsequent to a roadside safety check, Romero was found to be intoxicated and his driver’s license was revoked. Romero was charged with aggravated DUI, driving while license revoked, endangering the life of a child, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and was transported to the DuPage County Jail.

Forgery Aug. 16 Attempted forgery was reported the McDonalds located on the 100 block of E. Butterfield at about 4:20 p.m. According to the police report, the manager of the McDonalds stated an unknown black male suspect attempted to purchase food using a counterfeit $20 bill. The suspect was given back the counterfeit money.

Another customer paid for the suspect’s food and the suspect left the parking lot in a small silver Toyota.

Aug. 20 Forgery was reported at a business on the 600 block of W. Grand Avenue at about 12:15 p.m. According to the police report, the reporting officer spoke to the complainant who stated a check made to a client had been intercepted, altered, and cashed.

Aug. 21 Jason Drones-Akins, 35, of Chicago, was arrested for forgery in the 200 block of W. Grand at about 8:15 p.m. According to the police report, officers responded for the fraud in progress. Upon arrival, Drones-Akins fled out the back door and was subsequently taken into custody several blocks away. DronesAkins was in possession of a fraudulent social security card, which he was using while attempting to purchase a vehicle. The offender was charged with forgery and transported to DuPage County Jail.

Found property Aug. 17 Found property was reported on the 100 block of First Street at about 5:45 p.m. According to the police report, a resident was cleaning out his deceased father’s home and located a .22 firearm and several boxes of ammunition. He brought the items to the police station to be destroyed. The firearm and ammunition were placed into evidence for destruction.

Fraud Aug. 16 Fraud was reported on the 300 block of W. Lake Street at about 6 p.m. According to the police report, the victim received multiple phone calls from unknown suspects claiming to be US Federal Marshals. They told the victim she had an outstanding warrant and if she did not pay $500, federal agents would go to

her home. A person identified as “Officer Alice Peter” instructed the victim to purchase a Google Play Card for $500 and provide the listed Google Play number to Peter over the phone.

After the victim did this, she became suspicious and came into the police department.

The reporting officer was not able to contact anyone at the phone numbers provided by the victim.

Harassment

Aug. 17 Harassment through electronic communication was reported on the 900 block of No. Virginia Lane at about 11:20 a.m. According to the police report, the victim stated that in the past, the suspect continually made contact with her after she told him to stop. The victim blocked his phone number and social media accounts. The victim believes the suspect has been sending her text messages, emails and phone calls from private numbers and accounts. The victim was advised on how to obtain an order of protection.

Identify theft

Aug. 13 On the 800 block of So. Bryan at about 3 p.m., a victim reported he was a victim of identify theft. According to the police report, the victim related that he had been notified by his bank that an unknown suspect reportedly withdrew currency from the victim’s joint bank account. The reporting officer provided information on how the victims can protect themselves from identity theft.

Injury on City property Aug. 17 At Prospect & Park at about 9:45 p.m., an injury on City property was reported. According to the police report, an officer observed the victim attempt to jump the curb while riding his bicycle. The victim was unable to make it up the curb and fell to the ground. Medics responded and checked the victim for injuries.

The victim’s mother signed a refusal for further treatment.

Possession of a controlled substance

Aug. 16 Possession of a controlled substance was reported near Lake & York at about 6:45 p.m.

According to the police report, subsequent to a traffic stop for expired registration, an unnamed offender was found to be in possession of a prescription pill bottle with numerous different pills inside. The offender was also in possession of cannabis. The offender was released pending lab results.

Aug. 17 Paul Mandujano, 18, of Oak Brook, and Christopher Gircin, 18, of Westmont, were arrested for possession of cannabis near Roosevelt and Route 83 at about 1:20 a.m. According to the police report, subsequent to a traffic stop for speeding, both offenders were found to be in possession of and cited with possession of cannabis. Gircin was also cited with speeding and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were released on scene.

Aug. 18 A stolen vehicle was reported on the 100 block of So. Hawthorne at about 10 a.m. According to the police report, while conducting neighborhood interviews, the reporting officer was approached by a victim who related that his Chevrolet Malibu was missing from his driveway.

The victim advised that he parked his unlocked vehicle in his driveway and left the keys in the vehicle. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

Aug. 21 A theft investigation is pending, regarding an incident that reportedly took place at a business in the 900 block of So. York at about 10 p.m. According to the police report, officers responded after a suspect was observed running from the store with a large object, putting it in his trunk and fleeing the area.

The suspect and vehicle were located. The victim said a pre-assembled fire pit was missing. The fire pit was not located inside the suspect’s vehicle. The investigation continues.

Santa Montoya, 38, of Chicago, was arrested near York & Harbor Terrace at about 10:30 a.m. According to the police report, subsequent to a three-vehicle accident, Montoya was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, no valid driver’s license and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Ana Cruz Montes, 30, of Addison, was arrested near North & Rte. 83 at about 11:15 a.m. According to the police report, subsequent to a motor vehicle accident, Cruz Montes was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Juan P. Ochoa, 38, of Clarksville, Tenn., was arrested near Walnut & Lake at about 11:55 p.m. According to the police report, subsequent to a roadside safety check, the driver was found to have failed to secure his child in a child restraint seat and was also found to have a valid warrant out of the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The offender was taken into custody and transported to the police station, where he was processed and posted the required bond. The offender was cited for failure to secure a child in a child restraint seat and was released.

Khadija Mastoor, 27, of Villa Park, was arrested for damage to City property at Parkside and Harrison at about 8:30 p.m. According to the police report, Mastoor’s vehicle struck a City-owned pole and street sign. Subsequent to the crash, Mastoor was found to be driving with a license. Mastoor was arrested and charged with no valid driver’s license and improper lane usage. He was released on bond.

Melendez, 19, of Norridge, was arrested near North & Melrose at about 1 a.m. According to the police report, subsequent to a traffic stop for speeding, Melendez was found to be in possession of two identical fraudulent IDs. Melendez was taken into custody and was transported to the police station, where he was cited for possession of a fraudulent identification card, speeding, and was released on bond.

Agony of ‘de-feet’ During the summer months, I enjoy going barefoot and dipping my feet into the lake. My husband and I experience our own version of a pedicure when we wade in a shallow sandbar and the minnows swimming there nibble on our toes.

It scared me at first – and grossed me out to be honest – to think they were eating on our toes. But it only tickles and is actually pleasant once you get used to the idea of a small fish treating your skin like a smorgasbord.

During the summer I become more aware of feet. It’s probably because they are more available and viewable during the height of sandal season.

This can be good or bad, depending on the overall state of the feet within question or within view.

Feet are as different as the people walking atop of them. Some are short, some long. Some are wide, some narrow. Some are hairy, some bald. Some have polished toenails; others go for a more natural look.

Some are rather cute, others eye averting (ahem).

Like many things in life, my husband and I differ on foot stance.

We are definitely not feet twins; our toes are not even distantly related.

The height of my toes decreases from the tallest big toe to the shortest little toe in a uniform fashion. I am able to trim my toenails straight across because they grow straight and end straight.

I have very neat and orderly feet. (I wish the same could be said about the rest of my body and my life in general, but that’s another topic.)

The length of my husband’s toes conjures up a one-word description: anarchy. There is no law, no order, no pattern of tidiness; it’s simple disarray. His toenails are not cut neatly straight across because they do not grow neatly straight across.

They are jagged and curved in places where jags and curves are unneeded and unwanted.

Yet he doesn’t care and is basically unaware of the chaos living under his ankles.

My husband doesn’t give much thought to his toes, which is a good thing because pondering the subject would likely bring about frustration. What can a person do to change their toes? Not much besides polish and it’s highly unlikely my husband would ever go there. No, you’ve got to work with the hand (or in this case foot) you’re dealt.

with the overall look of my feet in sandals, I realize this is not the reason feet were put on earth. Feet have so much more to do than look pretty in flip-flops. They are workhorses in the plainest sense of the word.

Our feet carry the entire weight of our bodies – all day, every day.

Every step we take is dependent on one foot or the other. When we go barefoot, they get dirty. When we wear shoes they get sweaty. They get calloused and ingrown from everyday wear and tear. They get blisters when we wear the wrong shoes.

We moisturize our face, arms, legs and body but often forget about our feet until sandal season is looming and they are literally calling out for help. They do so much, and all we give them in return is the occasional pedicure, which if I am being honest, I have never experienced.

I hear many people think pedicures are fantastic. Luxurious even. I don’t think I could enjoy one; someone picking at and messing with my feet just seems a little too up close and personal.

Unless it was a school of minnows. Then I could do that.

Word meanings change with time and teens. It’s not easy keeping up with modern slang. And I generally don’t try.

Certainly I know the word “chill.”

Verb and adjective. Let’s just stay in tonight and chill. He’s really chill, I like him. Or perhaps instead of telling someone to calm down and relax, you tell them to chill.

There are some terms I can guess.

“Extra” means to be overly much, dramatic, over the top. Someone who wants a lot of attention or goes wild or is excessive. She’s so extra.

“Flex” has a new connotation and these days is not just for showing off your muscles. To flex is to show off anything. Driving his dad’s Porsche – he just wants to flex. My generation

The easiest way to keep crime out of Elmhurst is by being aware and smart. Criminals go where the easy money is. The easiest way to stop them is by not giving them easy access.

This means LOCK your car and don’t leave your keys in the car.

When you go shopping, NEVER leave your purse or phone in the cart.

One person will engage you in conversation and a second person will steal your phone or purse. When you are home doing things outside, lock your door and have your keys on you. What happens is one person will distract you and the other person will sneak in your house and steal.

People think I don’t have to do this because I live in Elmhurst. Elmhurst is right off I-290 and a lot of criminals know this is easy access to escape quickly.

We have a great police department and they have caught a lot of criminals, but they need us to help. When we get lazy or complacent, we are easy marks for crime.

Criminals will stay out of Elmhurst if we make it tough on them.

Yes, we have to make a little bit of effort, but it is worth it to keep crime out. This town is awesome, let’s keep it that way!

Fitness instructor ‘s business celebrates 25 years

Darlene Galgan enjoys sharing her “heart and sole” with others, and while she may have taken some time to pause, she hasn’t put the brakes on her enthusiasm.

Galgan is the owner of Heart & Sole Fitness, Inc., and the award-winning program has been helping seniors get or stay fit for 25 years now, whether it be at Beacon Hill or Lexington retirement communities in Elmhurst and Lombard.

Galgan, who was first interviewed for her 20th anniversary, related how she got into working with seniors in a way she didn’t expect.

She had been a physical education teacher, girls gymnastics coach and dance instructor, but a back injury changed her career path that led to working primarily with senior citizens.

Galgan took dance lessons as a child, and went on to graduate from DePaul University with a degree in physical education.

She related that she had a gym teacher she really liked, which helped influence her career choice.

She went on to work at Addison Trail High School, teaching physical education and dance, and coached girls gymnastics, which she said was new as a sport at the time.

Her background in dance was an asset in coaching gymnastics, Galgan mentioned, and the girls won a state championship in 1977.

After starting a family and taking some time off, she injured her back and ended up having surgery. That prompted her to modify her dance regimen, and Galgan took a class at College of DuPage to get recertified for teaching.

asked if she ever considered working with seniors, she recalled, and Galgan went along to observe Stoub’s senior citizen class at a Lombard church.

Move it or Lose it was founded by Mary Essert, according to Galgan, and Stoub was an instructor.

Galgan was intrigued by what she saw and consequently fell in love with

“I had never thought of going that route,” she admitted.

Galgan, who also taught jazz aerobics and tap dance for the Warrenville Community Club, went to work for Lexington as an independent contractor for Essert.

“They were mostly interested in me

According to School Transportation News, during the 2018 school year, 17 kids across the nation were killed by motorists who failed to stop for school buses loading or unloading passengers.

However, Illinois experienced a fatality-free school year.

White noted the success of his office’s Toby Tire School Bus Safety program, which emphasizes to students the dangers associated with riding school buses and crossing the street. White encourages those with school-age children to take time to remind them of the fundamentals of student transportation safety: • Always look both ways while crossing the street, even in bus loading zones.

• Always stay clear of the 10-foot “danger zone” that surrounds the bus.

• Maintain proper behavior on the bus by speaking in normal tones and always stay seated.

• Stay away from strangers.

“We must remain vigilant in our efforts to protect our children and ensure they get to and from school in a safe and responsible manner,” said White. “Our children are our future.”

When Essert’s business closed, Galgan remembers wondering what she would do next. The Lexington residents organized a petition to keep her on as an instructor, and the administration agreed, so Heart and Sole Fitness, Inc. was born.

She had four independent contractor

instructors and a handful of substitute instructors who each had their own expertise, Galgan said, and she was able to concentrate on teaching dance to her seniors.

She also taught adults with developmental disabilities through the South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation, or SEASPAR. The instructor explained how she teaches routines that adapt to participants’ physical limitations, but residents have always been willing to try new moves.

They typically warm up sitting down and like to groove to Big Band music.

In 2014, Heart and Sole received a Program Recognition Award from the American Heart Association.

In 2017, Galgan took some time off from teaching and focused on overseeing her instructors — who have their own areas of expertise, including a class in Ageless Grace.

Currently, “I’m easing back into it,” she related, adding that she has been teaching a class she calls “chi-slow,” which has a basis in tai chi.

The instructor said the exercises can be done sitting down and “They all love it and it’s safe.”

“They enjoy it and I enjoy it,” she added.

Looking back on her 25 years with the business, Galgan said she loves working with the seniors and reiterated how “It wasn’t a population I had ever considered.”

However, her greatest joy, which hasn’t changed in 25 years, is “being with the people.”

“We’re always inviting people to the classes,” she said.

College to host Portrait Of A Soldier art exhibit Portrait of a Soldier, a memorial art exhibit featuring hundreds of handsketched portraits of Illinois service members killed in action since 9/11, will be displayed for a week at Elmhurst College beginning on Sept. 9.

Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, who established the exhibit in 2004, will introduce it during an opening ceremony on Sept. 11.

The origins of the exhibit date to 2004, when Cameron Schilling, an artist from Mattoon, drew a portrait of Charles Neeley, a fellow Mattoon resident who died in Iraq, and gave it to Neeley’s parents.

About a year later, Schilling decided to draw a portrait of each Illinois service member killed in action since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He sends the originals to the service mem-

bers’ families, and copies are added to the Portrait of a Soldier display.

The exhibit has traveled across the state in recent years. It includes portraits of more than 300 members of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. It is arranged by each soldier’s date of death, beginning with Patrick Murphy, of Flossmoor, who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

The exhibit will be on display from Monday, Sept. 9 through Sunday, Sept.

15, in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College. An opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the Founders Lounge.

Admission to the exhibit and reception are free and all are welcome.

‘Curvy Red Hatters’ celebrate one of their own

On Wednesday, Aug. 21, the Elmhurst Curvy Red Hatters had a surprise celebration for their oldest member Jean Schildbach, who will be 99 years young on Thursday, Aug. 29. A luncheon was held at Rainbow Restaurant, complemented by balloons, roses and birthday cake. An Elmhurst resident for 94 years, Jean has two daughters, was a Girl Scout leader, attended York High School and held many volunteer positions for her church and our community. She still writes poetry and has graced the monthly Red Hat meetings with lots of smiles, laughter and at least one new poem. The Club wishes her a hearty Happy Birthday and best wishes for 100.

Labor Day is quickly approaching and gas prices for the holiday weekend are lining up to be the lowest in two to three years, according to AAA. There are still a number of factors that could push prices higher before the holiday.

Today, the average price for gasoline in the U.S. is $2.60 per gallon.

Drivers are currently paying 24 cents less than they did on Labor Day 2018 ($2.84), and 4 cents less than on Labor Day 2017 ($2.64). Daily gas prices averages, including state and metro information, can be found at GasPrices.AAA.com.

“Labor Day travelers will benefit from lower oil prices this year as they fill up for their holiday road trip,” said Nick Jarmusz, Midwest director of public affairs for AAA - The Auto Club Group. “Strong US oil production rates are holding oil prices about 15% below last year’s levels, effectively reducing the price of producing gasoline. Gas prices should remain low heading into the holiday, unless something unexpected threatens fuel supplies, like geopolitical tensions or a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Labor Day marks the end of the busy summer travel season, and the last big surge in gasoline demand before the fall. The expectation of strong demand can promote a slight and temporary bump at the pump before the holiday. However, after Labor Day, refineries begin their seasonal switch to winter-blend gasoline. Summer-blend gasoline is more expensive to produce than winter-blend, because the EPA requires more additives in the hotter months of the year. The combination of lower demand and fuel production costs typically restores downward pressure on pump prices through the end of the year.

Timothy Christian girls volleyball team young on paper Trojans part of challenging Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division this season

The Timothy Christian girls volleyball team will have a different look to it on several fronts this season.

Coach Scott Piersma graduated nine seniors off last year’s squad and has a 2019 roster that features just two seniors.

“We have about half kids that are returning and half that are all new to the team,” he said. “We’re pretty young, but the good thing is most of them will be sticking around for the next two years.”

Also new for the Trojans this season is a move up to the challenging Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division, which features volleyball-tradition-rich schools such as Wheaton St. Francis, Chicago Christian and IC Catholic Prep.

Timothy does bring back the likes of setter Campbell Marshall, middle blocker Greta Hoogstra, outside hitter Hannah Schuringa, defensive specialist-libero Alli Myers, rightside hitter Kelly Tameling and junior Annie Taylor (outside hitter-rightside hitter).

Newcomers include senior Sophie Labuda, who sat out a year after transferring from York, junior Christina Swiech, sophomores Abi Alonso

and Amanda Leibrock and freshman middle Sadie Orange.

“The big thing is for the new girls to get up to the speed of the varsity game,” said Piersma. “That’s going to be a new thing for them, especially our freshman. That’s a big ask. With sophomores, at least they played JV last year and have a little feel.”

Piersma is happy Timothy opened the season earlier this week against Fenwick and then will go right into the Timothy Christian-Westmont tournament this weekend.

“Fenwick is a good opponent to begin with,” he said. “We will learn a lot about where we are at. It’s also another good reason to have that tournament as early as we do. We will be able to play a ton of games

and get in a lot of reps.”

Piersma, who noted Timothy has moved down to Class 2A for the postseason the next two years, likes the depth of his roster. “We have 11 girls and they all can find a spot on the court,” he said. “We have that depth. If a girl is not on or is not feeling well, we can sub someone in and we will not miss a beat. And since we’re younger, we know we’re going to have this group for two years.

We’ll have a good look and feel about this group by the time October comes around and then we’ll have another year to get ready for the following October.”

In terms of question marks, Piersma said lineup spots are still pretty much wide open. “We know Han-

nah is one of our outsides, we know Greta is our middle-1 and we know Campbell is setting,” he said. “We have girls who can fit in multiple places. I don’t think that’s necessarily a question mark, but it’s a matter of finding the right kind of lineup for us. We’ve seen some things the first few weeks and we’ll find out what works best for us.”

Piersma said the Blue Division of the MSC will be a challenge, but that’s not a bad thing. “St. Francis is going to be a top team and Chicago Christian is very good. They have an outside hitter committed to Michigan State,” he said. “Same thing with Rosary. We had a fun match with them last year. IC always is strong. I like the conference. It’s going to be fun.

There will be no off nights. We know we will face good competition every night and that will help us learn even if we take a couple more losses. It’s going to help us for the postseason.”

The Blue Division features St. Francis, Rosary, Chicago Christian, IC Catholic Prep, Aurora Central Catholic, St. Edward and Riverside-Brookfield.

Timothy will play five matches in the Timothy-Westmont tournament.

“We’ll have six matches right away with Fenwick and the tournament,” said Piersma. “We’re ready to get going. We’ve been practicing for 2 1/2 weeks. We just set up the main court for practice and that was really exciting. It gives us more of a feel to get into playing mode.”

Week 1 Preview York at Schaumburg When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Schaumburg High School Last year: Did not play Outlook: York has switched things up on the Week 1 opener front with a trip to Schaumburg to face a Saxons team that went 4-5 a year ago. York also finished 4-5. All five of Schaumburg’s losses last year came against teams with .500 or winning records; the Saxons were 4-0 against teams with losing records. The exact same stat line was true for York. The key for the Dukes this season will be turning the zero in that 0-5 mark against winning teams into a positive number. The result would likely then be the end of a lengthy playoff-qualification drought for the Dukes.

York girls golf team defeats Willowbrook and St. Ignatius Blattner and Moran pick up meet medalist honors for Dukes

The York girls golf team posted a pair of recent wins.

The Dukes were 142-175 West Suburban Conference winners against Willowbrook at Twin Lakes in Westmont.

Haley Blattner was the medalist for the Dukes with a 33. Audrey Matias and Elle Borchardt each shot 35, while Nora Foley had a 39.

In the junior-varsity contest, York won 167-207. Elise Moran was the meet medalist with a 39. Lily Rennick shot 41, as did Macy Fries.

Cookie Klinger shot 43.

York then recorded a 148-181 non-conference win against St. Ignatius at Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

Matias and Borchardt tied for meet medalist honors. Each shot 36. Blattner had a 37 and Lauren Keith finished with a 39.

York’s JV was a 189-232 winner over St. Ignatius. Ellie Wiygul was the meet medalist with a 46. Jenna Hughes shot 47, while Emily Thomas, Moran and Fries each carded 48s.

York also dropped a close 181187 non-conference meet to Wheaton North at Arrowhead in Wheaton.

Nora Folley shot 44 for the Dukes.

Blattner had a 46, while Matias had a 48. Cassie Sika and Borchardt each shot 49.

York’s JV beat Wheaton North 206-257. Thomas and Keith tied for meet medalist honors with 50s. Fries shot 51, while Hughes had a 55.

The Dukes also dropped a 175183 WSC contest to Downers Grove North at the Downers Grove Park District Course. Sika and Blattner each shot 45s, while Matias had a 46 and Keith finished with a 47.

York’s JV was a 204-220 winner over Downers North in WSC competition. Klinger shot 49, while Hughes had a 51. Wiygul and Thomas each shot 52s.

York also hosted the Sugar Creek JV Invitational in Villa Park. The Dukes took fifth in the field with a 382. Loyola Academy won the event with a 331.

Thomas led the way with a 91.

Wiygul and Moran each shot 95.

Klinger had a 101 and Fries had a 108 for 18 holes.

York is coming off a 2018 season where it took third in the WSC behind Hinsdale Central and Downers

Grove North.

York won a regional title by 40 strokes. Back from that sectional team are Blattner, Borchardt, Matias, Claudia Schreiber and Sika.

State qualifier Bella Bartolone graduated.

“The strength of our team is our girls are very motivated,” said York coach Barb Tilden. “They are great players and great girls who all seemed to have worked on their game over the summer. We’re looking forward to a great season.”

Tilden noted Hinsdale Central again will be the team to keep an eye out for in the WSC.

The York girls tennis team lists 13 players as key losses from last year’s squad that went 21-7, placed third in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division regular season and tournament and took second at a Class 2A sectional.

However, the cupboards are far from bare for 12th year head coach Tres Heimann, who brings a 217112 mark into this season as York’s girls coach. He has a career 353191 record between the York boys and girls programs. He is no longer the boys head coach.

Back for York is senior No. 1 singles player Melissa Cartis, a two-time state qualifier in 2017 and 2018. She’s been at No. 1 singles her previous three years. She went 23-12 last year and has a 69-44 varsity record and ranks No. 72 in the CDTA 16s division.

Junior Gianna Nikoleit played No. 2 singles the previous two years and was a state doubles qualifier with Cartis in 2017. She was 27-5 last year and is 56-22 in her varsity career. She’s ranked No. 45 in the CDTA 16s division.

Senior Aleksina Jovic won 16 matches last year and has a 59-46 career varsity record as she enters her fourth varsity season.

Senior Cate Duhig is back. This is her third year on varsity after missing her junior season due to elbow surgery.

Sophomore Gabby Felder was 13-2 last year before getting hurt, while senior Micki Neidigh went 18-7 last year and has a 59-25 mark in the program. This is her third year on varsity. She was all-conference at No. 4 doubles in 2017.

Senior Rachel Kayman went 20-7 last year and has a 49-29 career mark in the York program as she begins her third year on varsity.

Key newcomers to the team include seniors Melanie Ruesch, Greta Roy, Lauren Marquardt, Darelle Menendie, Cara McGovern, Rebecca Morton and Catie Elsey, juniors Vivian Brunke, Zoe Burkhardt and Isabel Brown, sophomores Morgan Burnham and Elle Duhig and freshman Keira Polach.

Heimann noted the program has 100 players in it this fall for a third year in a row. “We are very excited for this season because we have 100 players out for the team,” Heimann said. “We are very excited to have

seven starters returning off last year’s team, many of whom have three or four years of varsity experience. We will have a very deep team up and down the lineup card.”

Heimann noted this is the fourth year that the IHSA has two classes for girls tennis. “It will be more challenging in the 2A tournament,” he said. “There will be great competition throughout the area and we will play a very competitive schedule.”

Heimann noted Cartis and Nikoleit will fill the top two singles spots. “We are still looking at the doubles combinations,” he said. “It is in the early going, but we will have very good options to try out.

It should be a very exciting season.”

Heimann pointed out the WSC Silver again will be competitive.

“The West Suburban Silver is always loaded,” he said. “Hinsdale Central has won five out of the last six state championships. Lyons Township and Glenbard West have finished in the top-10 teams in the state the last two out of three seasons. Oak Park-River Forest has a top-caliber team each year. We look forward to competing with all these very good teams. It will prepare us for postseason play.”

Pritzker signs bill phasing in $40K minimum teacher pay

Some teachers in Illinois will get a pay raise starting next year, thanks to a bill that Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law Aug. 22.

House Bill 2078, which passed the General Assembly in the final days of the 2019 session, phases in an increase in minimum teacher salaries to $40,000 a year over the next four years.

“As Illinois’ children head back to school this week and next, this new law says to them and their parents loud and clear, we value teachers,” Pritzker said during a Statehouse news conference.

The bill is aimed at relieving what many have described as a severe statewide teacher shortage in Illinois. During the 2018-2019 school year, Pritzker said, roughly 1,500 teaching positions across the state were unfilled.

“We need to start taking this problem seriously and this legislation is a good step toward solving it,” state Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, the chief Senate sponsor of the bill, said in a statement.

According to data from the Illinois State Board of Education, the average salary of a public school teacher in the state was $65,721 during the 2017-2018 academic year, the most recent year for which figures are available. But the salaries for individual teachers varies greatly, depending on their location, years of experience, their own level of education and the financial resources of the district in which they teach.

Officials estimate the new law will affect about 8,000 of the state’s 127,000 full-time public school teachers.

Bentley Stewart, a second-year teacher at Crossroads Learning Center in the Jacksonville School District, said during the news conference that she earns about $34,000 teaching students who’ve been suspended or expelled from regular schools.

“It’s a very hard job and teachers don’t mind that, but we also want to be secure in knowing we’ll be able to raise our own families and that our families will be secure,” she said. “This law goes a long way towards that.”

Under current law, the minimum salary for a teacher ranges from $9,000 for someone with less than a bachelor’s degree to $11,000 for someone with a master’s degree. That law hasn’t changed since the early 1980s.

The new law raises the minimum salary to $32,076 in the 2020-2021 school year. It then adds $2,500 in each of the next two years, finally arriving at $40,000 in the 2023-2024 school year. After that, mandatory increases will be indexed to inflation.

Although passage of the bill will increase costs for some school districts, Pritzker noted that this year’s budget included a $375 million increase in state funding for K-12 education.

According to a fiscal analysis of the bill, the higher minimum salary will add, on average, about 0.5 percent to each district’s “adequacy target” under the state’s new Evidence Based Funding system. It also could widen the gap between current funding and the adequacy target for many districts.

Under that funding system, each district is assigned a target for adequate funding, and those that are the furthest below their target receive top priority for funding increases each year, with the goal of providing adequate funding to all districts by 2027.

Minors across Illinois will soon have easy access to EpiPens, thanks to a new law supported by state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton.

Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) advocated for House Bill 3435, which requires certain insurers to cover medically necessary epinephrine injectors for minors – the fast-acting treatments for severe allergic reactions.

“It’s our duty to take the necessary steps to ensure this life saving drug is affordable and easily accessible to children in Illinois,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Children with serious allergies should not have to go without a vital epinephrine injector simply because they cannot afford one.”

Epinephrine injectors – common-

ly known by the specific brand name EpiPen – deliver the life-saving drug epinephrine to individuals experiencing a severe allergic reaction. Epinephrine works by narrowing blood vessels and opening lung airways, reversing the symptoms of a potentially fatal allergic reaction.

This measure requires certain private insurance policies to cover medically necessary epinephrine injectors for those under 18 years of age.

“Families across our district rely on this essential medicine to keep their children safe,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This small step can help us save lives.”

House Bill 3435 was signed earlier this month and goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

These measures received bipartisan support. Senate Bill 1167 goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020 while Senate Bill 1591 and Senate Bill 2024 go into effect immediately.
