Public Arts Commission seeks proposals for 911 Memorial Sculpture Piece will incorporate Fire Department’s steel rail from World Trade Center

On Aug. 12, the City’s Public Arts Commission issued a Request for Proposals for a 911 Memorial Sculpture to be displayed at Fire Station #2. Proposals are due at the City of Elmhurst Sept. 20 at 5 p.m.

About the Public Artwork project The City of Elmhurst, City of Elmhurst’s Fire Department, and the Elmhurst Public Arts Commission are seeking proposals from emerging and established Midwest artists for an outdoor sculpture dedicated to the heroes of September 11, 2001.

The proposed memorial sculpture must include a 13.5-foot piece of steel rail (provided by the Elmhurst Fire Department) from the World Trade Center, which should be the focal point of the sculpture. The entire memorial site (landscaping) will also include a timeline of the events that happened throughout that solemn day.

The memorial sculpture will give the residents of Elmhurst, as well as many other visitors, a place at which to reflect on this significant day in U.S. history. It will be available for

viewing year-round and be placed in front of Elmhurst Fire Station #2 and adjacent to York Street, a main north/ south thoroughfare.

The purpose of the Memorial Sculpture is to ensure that the community will have an enduring source of remembrance of the events of September 11, 2001.

The Public Arts Commission offers the following description to artists: With vibrant, tree-lined streets and a convenient central location in the Chicagoland area, Elmhurst is a visual-arts, cultural and historical destination in the western suburbs. It is home to Elmhurst University’s internationally celebrated Chicago Imagist art collection, and the arts complex of the Elmhurst Art Museum, which hosts rotating contemporary exhibitions and a single-family home designed by Mies van der Rohe.

The juried arts festival Art in Wilder Park welcomes thousands each year. These organizations as well as the Elmhurst History Museum are among many resources that support the values of artistic expression, remembrance and family within the community.

About the Fire Department, commission The Elmhurst Fire Department is an organization that prides itself on being proactive, efficient and effective in its delivery of public safety services. Its core mission is to protect the life and property in the Elmhurst community.

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County As of 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, there were 13,871 total cases

among DuPage County residents, including 529 deaths. Since Sunday, there were 106 new cases and NO deaths related to COVID-19.

Janie E. Toedter, 76

Janie E. Toedter, of Elmhurst, formerly of Sevierville, Tenn., died on August 20, 2020 at the age of 76.

Janie will be missed by her family and friends. Her gorgeous tenor voice would make everyone smile. She was a member of the Choral Society at the University of Tennessee as well as St. John’s Episcopal Church Choir in Knoxville for many years.

Janie loved nature, especially when she got to go fishing. She was also an avid artist, working primarily with watercolors. But above all else, Janie loved her family. She is survived by her sister Ellie Kulton; her four nephews Gary (Kim) Kulton, Bill (Robin) Kulton, Jon (Jen) Kulton and Chris (Mary) Kulton; one niece Kim Kulton (Pete Soltesz); eight grandniec-

Elmhurst resident, UA exec last seen Aug. 6 still missing Group search nets no results; Facebook page launched

Last week, the Independent brought its readers the news that an Elmhurst resident who is an executive for United Airlines, had been missing for more than a week.

At press time, he still had not been found.

According to several news outlets, Jake Cefolia, 49, United Airlines senior vice president of worldwide sales, was last seen on Thursday, Aug. 6, and was reported missing on Saturday, Aug. 8.

Illinois law enforcement, local police, K-9 units and more than 100 volunteers came out to search for Cefolia near the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Lemont, where his vehicle had been found. The location is near the United Airlines global headquarters.

Friends told Forest Preserve District authorities that he often went for a run in that particular forest preserve

location.

Cefolia’s friends and family have organized separate searches on their own for him and have established a Facebook page that currently has more than 700 members who share notes on the results of their searches. Someone posted on the Facebook page that a pair of eyeglasses had been found on a bench about halfway into the Preserve. While Cefolia indeed wore glasses, it could not be confirmed whether or not the pair that was found belonged to him.

Another Facebook post indicated there had been no organized search since Aug. 14 and that another should be put together sooner rather than later.

When it was learned Mr. Cefolia was missing, DuPage County Forest Preserve District Chief David Peterson told news outlets that officials were unsure whether or not he might be found somewhere in the forest preserve.

Anyone with information about Cefolia is asked to call the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.

Hospital Foundation awards Myers Scholarships to area students The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation has awarded $5,000 Thomas O. Myers, Jr. and Shirley L. Myers Endowed Scholarships to Gillian Atilano and Nicole Grames.

The scholarships are awarded every year to children of Elmhurst Hospital employees who are pursuing careers in healthcare.

Atilano, a 2020 graduate of St. Charles East High School, is a freshman at Marquette University in Milwaukee pursuing a degree in nursing. Her mother, Lelizza Atilano, is a nurse at Edward-Elmhurst

Elmhurst author releases two new children’s books ‘Helper Hounds’ series depicts how rescue dogs help children face their fears

From children’s books to self-help books to magazine articles, Caryn Rivadeneira truly writes it all. The Elmhurst author has two books out as a part of her Helper Hounds children’s series.

The new books, “Noodle Helps Gabriel Say Goodbye” and “Robot Helps Max and Lily Deal with Bullies”, are numbers three and four in the series. They focus on rescue dogs and how they teach children important lessons.

This may sound like a pretty specific niche, but it’s not necessarily what Rivadeneira thought she would do. Born and raised in Elmhurst, Rivadeneira said she knew she was a writer from a young age.

“As a kid, you sort of have the idea that writers are authors,” she said.

Her other passion was always her love for dogs. Rivadeneira is a self-proclaimed pit bull fanatic, with one rescue of her own.

“I’ve wanted to write about dogs since the age of 7,” Rivadeneira said.

Friend and colleague Jennifer Grant said Rivadeneira’s love for canines has always been evident.

“There’s nobody I know that loves dogs more than she does,” Grant said.

She is also dedicated to her faith and is a church staffer, making religion an important part of her life. Rivadeneira incorporates both of these passions into her books.

With a bachelor’s degree in English, she dived right into magazine writing. Rivadeneira said she loved the essay format of magazine articles and went on to become an editor, even dabbling in blog editing.

It wasn’t until her mid-30s that Rivadeneira began considering books. The mother of three had written an article detailing the struggles of motherhood. Her editor was impressed and told her to explore the topic more thoroughly— maybe even write a book about it.

And that’s exactly what she did.

Rivadeneira landed a spot at Random House publishing. Her first book was “Mama’s Got a Fake I.D.,” which chronicles the struggles of losing yourself in the role of a mother.

From there, her journey to authorship took off. But the real twist in her career happened by chance.

“Writing children’s books hadn’t been on my horizon,” Rivadeneira said. “The switch happened accidentally.”

A colleague asked her to write a children’s book about Noah’s Ark. This led her to write her first original children’s book, “Grit and Grace.” Rivadeneira said she wanted to share stories with young girls of strong, empowered women from the Bible.

“It was important to me that I didn’t over soften it,” she said. “I wanted it to be very feminist.”

The ‘Helper Hounds’ series Her current project is an eight-book series called Helper Hounds, which was inspired by an introduction to a comfort dog organization.

The first story, “Penny Helps Portia Face Her Fears,” was based on her own dynamic dog of 10 years ago.

Writing for magazines But the ideas don’t always come so easily. leads to children’s books “I know what the premise is, but generally Rivadeneira’s early start was in magazines. when I sit down to write, I don’t have things

scripted out,” she said. “There are elements I discover as I’m writing.”

Grant said Rivadeneira’s creative writing abilities are remarkable.

“She has a very quick mind,” Grant said.

“She just has a laser focus when she’s writing.”

Grant herself writes books for children and adults. She said this similarity to Rivadeneira has drawn them close as colleagues, and they often inspire each other.

“Our careers have been similar in some ways,” Grant said.

“We’ve developed some ideas in tandem and encourage each other.”

This comes in handy when curating ideas, as shifting between children’s and adult books can be challenging.

Shifting to writing for adults Rivadeneira said the process for writing adult books is quite different, especially since many of hers are non-fiction. In some ways, Rivadeneira said she feels it can be similar to magazine writing.

The one element that all of Rivadeneira’s books have in common are her personal passions. Although not all of her books have religious ties, they all have themes of goodness.

The Helper Hound series, for example, teaches strong moral values, which is important to her writing, Rivadeneira said.

“I want people to think deeply about the world around them,” she said. “I see these things as a part of who I am, so it comes out in my writing.”

Although Covid-19 has put a halt to promotional events, Rivadeneira has no plans to stop writing any time soon.

“I feel like if I had the opportunity, I could seriously write forever,” she said.

The next two books in the Helper Hounds series are set to come out in January 2021.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

A victim in the 300 block of E. Butterfield told police at around 9:11 p.m. that she felt threatened after receiving a text message from the suspect. A reporting officer advised the suspect that the victim did not wish to have further contact with the suspect. The suspect stated she will have no further contact with the victim.

Assault, battery Aug. 17 A victim in the 200 block of W. Adams told police at around 2 p.m. that she woke up with pain and believed she had been sexually assaulted while she was asleep. The case is pending investigation.

Aug. 16 Joseph L. Taglia, 40, of Glendale Heights, was charged with aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated assault and resisting arrest near York and Butterfield at around 6:11 p.m. Police said officers and medics responded to the above location for the report of a subject who was lying on the ground. When an officer asked Taglia his address, he allegedly began yelling, cursing and approached the officers in a threatening manner. Police said Taglia spat on an officer and struck him in the face.

Aug. 15 The victim, a security officer in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill, told police at around 5:41 p.m. that while he was assisting a Berkeley officer with an uncooperative suspect, the suspect punched him. The reporting officer observed redness and swelling of the victim’s left ear and head. The suspect admitted to striking the victim. Charges are pending.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Aug. 18 Police said five storage units at a public storage facility in the 200 block of W. Lake were found to have the hasps cut off and the locks appeared to be missing. The property manager will contact the unit’s owners and report any missing items.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance Aug. 19 A complainant in the 800 block of S. Riverside told police at around 3:38 p.m. that an unknown suspect described as a white male yelled expletives after she was seen parking by a fire hydrant. The suspect then walked away.

The area was checked with no results.

A reporting officer met with a victim who stated she was involved in a verbal argument with the suspect at around 9:31 p.m. The argument turned physical when the victim pushed the suspect, who then reportedly punched the victim’s upper back. Upon further speaking with the suspect, he made suicidal statements to officers. Medics arrived on scene and transported the suspect to Elmhurst Hospital for an evaluation. The victim stated she did not wish to sign complaints.

DUI, DUI-drugs, possession of alcohol in public Aug. 16 George Ortiz, 24, of Elmwood Park, was charged with DUI-drugs and unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver subsequent to a traffic crash in the 400 block of N. Oaklawn at around 9:08 a.m. Police said officers detected a strong odor of cannabis coming from inside of Ortiz’s vehicle. A search of the suspect’s vehicle yielded cannabis, a smoking pipe and one MDMA pill, according to police.

Aug. 15 Christopher M. Becerra, 24, of Addison, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an attended vehicle accident, squealing tires and no insurance subsequent to a hit and run traffic crash in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 1:49 a.m.

Gabriela Z. Lozowska, 40, of Mount Prospect, was charged with DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a traffic crash near Route 83 and North at around 11:07 p.m.

False police report Aug. 19 John C. Tibbs, 58, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct/false police report and aggravated battery to a paramedic in the 200 block of E. First at around 2:04 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the complainant who stated a subject described as a black male took his phone and ran northbound.

Upon further investigation, it was determined Tibbs had made false statements, according to police. Police said Tibbs was transported by medics to Elmhurst Hospital where he allegedly battered an Elmhurst paramedic.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Aug. 17 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 10:15 a.m., a reporting officer detected the strong odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle yielded a plastic container containing paraphernalia and a white powdery residue. The suspect was released on-scene pending lab results.

Resisting police Aug. 13 Kwame Johnson, 30, of Monroe, La., was charged with resisting a police officer, providing false identification, obstructing a police officer and pedestrian in the roadway near prospect and Brush Hill at around 2:56 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a report of a subject laying on the grass near the above location, Johnson provided the reporting officer with false identification and received medical services under false identification. According to police, Johnson approached the officer in an aggressive manner and placed his hands on him.

Aug. 18 A complainant in the 100 block of N. York told police at around 4:42 p.m. that a suspect made threatening statements indicating he would cause harm. The area was checked for the suspect with no results.

Aug. 18 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 1:46 p.m. Upon reviewing video surveillance, the store’s loss prevention discovered a female suspect took items of various household goods and exited the store without paying. She is described as white female between 25 and 30 years old, 5’6”, 125 pounds with long brown hair, eyeglasses, wearing a blue button-down shirt, blue jeans, black athletic shoes and tan purse.

Residential burglary was reported in the 100 block of W. Brush Hill at around 7:50 a.m. A victim told police that when she arrived at her apartment, she discovered her front door had been forced open. Officers conducted a safety sweep of the apartment and discovered multiple drawers were opened and items were disturbed. The victim stated several pieces of jewelry were missing from the apartment. The case is pending investigation.

Aug. 14 A victim in the 100 block of E. Brush told police at around 9:01 a.m. that she has been receiving harassing calls and messages from her ex-boyfriend. She received 22 calls while at work on the above date. A message was left for the suspect not to have any further contact with the victim.

May 1-Aug. 18 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of N. Route 83. A victim told police that he was receiving red light photo tickets for a vehicle he did not own. The victim later discovered a suspect fraudulently purchased a Toyota Camry using the victim’s personal information. An investigation is pending.

Aug. 17 Theft was reported in the 600 block of N. York at around 1:20 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed cash and his Illinois driver’s license from his wallet after he left it in an unsecured locker room.

The victim’s driver’s license was entered into LEADS as stolen.

Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of N. Howard at around 8:36 a.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who stated an unknown suspect applied for unemployment benefits using his information. The victim completed an online form with the IDES to report the identity theft.

Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of W. Fremont at around 2:53 p.m. A victim told police that he received a text message from his painter which stated a package was dropped off addressed to the victim. Within minutes, an unknown suspect described as a black female arrived at the house and stated she was there to pick up the package. The painter advised the unknown suspect that he would contact the victim first, and the unknown female then left the property without the package. It was later discovered an unknown suspect had used the victim’s information to order an iPhone.

Theft was reported in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 1:59 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed her wallet from her purse while it was left unattended in a shopping cart. The victim was distracted by an unknown suspect (described as a black female around 40 years old) and thinks the wallet was taken at this time. The victim canceled her credit card and was notified from two credit card companies of attempted

Aug. 14-Aug. 16 Burglary was reported in the 200 block of W. Lake. A victim told police that the lock on his storage unit was cut and replaced with another lock sometime between the above dates. The victim entered the unit and discovered several mechanical tools were taken from inside.

Aug. 14-Aug. 15 Theft was reported in the 600 block of Poplar. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed his steel lawn chairs from the front of his home and placed them on a neighbor’s front lawn. The neighbor, not knowing who they belonged to, placed the chairs at the curb. An unknown suspect(s) removed the chairs from the curb.

Aug. 12 Theft was reported at a business in the 700 block of N. York at around 12:35 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who stated an unknown suspect(s) stole the company’s American flag that was displayed in front of the business. In reviewing surveillance footage, a white male pushing a shopping cart can be seen taking the flag. The suspect was later located and the flag was returned to the business. The business declined to press charges.

Indiana and the second in the 800 block of N. Indiana. In the first incident, nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle. In the second incident, a victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered two unlocked vehicles which were parked in the driveway overnight. Items inside the vehicles were disturbed; however, nothing appeared to be missing. The victim reviewed video surveillance which showed two vehicles driving slowly down the street at around 1:08 a.m. A suspect was recorded approaching several vehicles parked in driveways.

Dr. Jorgensen contacted to DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin to seek his perspective on this problem.

“The profound increase in overdose deaths documented by Coroner Jorgensen is a disturbing reminder that illegal narcotics continue to devastate our communities,” Berlin said. “Despite the Covid-19 pandemic we must continue to dedicate resources to combat the opioid epidemic and provide greater opportunities for treatment.”

Coroner Jorgensen reiterated his conclusions.

“It appears that an unforeseen col-

lateral consequence of the stresses of ‘Shelter at Home’ which resulted in isolation, lack of community and companionship is taking its toll on the most vulnerable of our society,” he said. “If you know of people who are at high risk -- known drug users, those in rehabilitation, persons living alone, having personal, financial or marital difficulty, mental health issues or depression -- please reach out (you can still wear masks and social distance) and talk to them and see if they need companionship, support or help.

“These are difficult times made worse when an individual has drug and/or mental health issues. We are all in this together and need to reach out to all of those who are vulnerable in this difficult time.

DuPage County Committee encourages final Census push The U.S. Census is in its final six weeks, and the DuPage Complete Count Committee is urging residents to complete their Census forms.

DuPage County’s self-response rate is currently at 78.8 percent, which ranks third in the nation among counties with a population greater than 500,000. But officials hope to increase the response rate.

“We cannot underestimate the value of increasing our U.S. Census response rates,” said Sadia Covert, Chairwoman of the DuPage Complete Count Committee. “DuPage County’s level of federal funding is highly dependent upon our population. The only way to obtain the level of federal funding we are owed is if everyone fills out their Census information. This money will be used to fund states and counties, but also for schools, hospitals, roads, and other vital programs. There is so much at stake with this Census.”

Beginning this month, the U.S. Census Bureau is following up in-person with households nationwide that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census. Based on the current nationwide self-response rate, the Bureau estimates it will need to visit about 56 million addresses to collect responses in person.

In most cases, Census workers will make up to six attempts at each housing unit address to count possible residents. This includes leaving notification of the attempted visit on the door. The notification will include reminder information on how to respond online, by mail, or by phone.

In addition, census workers may try to reach the household by phone to conduct the interview.

After exhausting their efforts to do an in-person interview with a resident of an occupied housing unit, they will seek out proxy sources – a neighbor, a rental agent, a building manager or some other knowledgeable person familiar with who re-

DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, M.D. recently reported on preliminary data indicating an alarming increase in overdose deaths in DuPage County. This Public Service Announcement is a follow up to that initial report with an in-depth review of all deaths due to overdose in the first six months of 2020, during the onset of Covid 19 shelter at home compared to the same period in 2019.

These overdoses deaths are particularly difficult because they represent the premature end of a life, made worse by the fact that the majority of fatal overdoses occur in the young. They leave family, friends and community with grief and inevitable questions of “what if.”

A thorough investigation and review of every overdose case has been undertaken to understand the circumstances and cause of this rise in overdose deaths. Personal, demographic and toxicological information was collected and reviewed to identify trends on who and how these overdoses occurred in the hope of fostering a better understanding of the problem and identifying potential solutions both on a personal and societal level.

Cullerton applauds local businesses receiving state grants

To provide support to DuPage County business owners encountering economic hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) announced 27 small businesses will receive nearly $500,000 through the Business Interruption Grant (BIG) program.

“This program will help our small businesses keep their doors open and employees and customers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cullerton said. “I am thrilled to see so many local businesses receive much-needed assistance to stay afloat and continue to support our communities.”

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded a total of $46 million to 2,655 small businesses in the first round of BIG funding. The BIG program offers grants to Illinois restaurants and bars, barbershops and salons, and fitness centers that have suffered pandemic-related losses, with a focus on businesses in the hardest-hit areas of the state.

First round grants range from $10,000 to $20,000 and may be used to help businesses with working capital expenses, including payroll costs, rent and utilities. The funds may also be used to cover pandemic-related expenses, such as personal protective equipment, training and new technology.

Cullerton has worked tirelessly to cut red tape, increase assistance programs and ease regulations for small businesses across the state. He pledges to continue to support policies that keep the 23rd State Senate District safe, schools well-funded and property taxes low.

“Our local businesses are the backbone of our state,” he said. “We must

continue to give them the resources to be successful as they work toward reopening and keeping our communities safe.”

The BIG program is the largest state-run economic support program formed in response to the COVID-19 economic downturn.

Reader opposes photos of unmasked sports teams

The photo on the front page of your current issue (Aug. 20) of a youth baseball team and its coaches celebrating a victory is irresponsible and dangerous journalism. The boys and coaches in this photo are neither six feet apart nor wearing face coverings, in violation of Governor Pritzker’s current executive order mandating, as law, that all persons not of the same household maintain at least six feet of social distance or, where not possible, wear a face covering which covers the nose and the

mouth.

In addition to violating the law, the persons in the photo are endangering both their own health, the health of their families and friends, and of the American public. A deadly pandemic is raging through our country; 1000 Americans are dying every day from COVID-19. Just today, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that our country could have the coronavirus pandemic under control in 12 weeks if only most Americans wore masks, embraced social distancing, and engaged in hand hygiene.

DiCianni responds to Cronin’s comments in article In response to an article published in the Elmhurst Independent’s July 23 issue, I’d like to clarify a few points regarding the July 14 DuPage County Board meeting.

Chairman Dan Cronin was quoted as saying there was “no effort underway by any DuPage County Board member to defund police,” and criticized me for sending an automated phone call to constituents, stating there had been efforts.

Chairman Cronin has cut DuPage County’s Sheriff’s Office staffing on three separate occasions with three specific votes.

Chairman Cronin was absent from a June 9 Finance Committee meeting when Democratic leaders, in response to George Floyd’s death at the hands of police, openly discussed the national movement to defund law enforcement. Words used included “moving buckets of money around from law enforcement to community services.”

Additionally, responding to a fellow board member who said there was no looting or rioting in DuPage County following Floyd’s death, I pointed out that indeed there were such occurrences in both Aurora and Naperville, as well as minor isolated incidents in Downers Grove and Elmhurst.

The July 23rd article also mentioned that Chairman Cronin stated the phone call may have compelled people to “gather unnecessarily while COVID-19 is spiking.”

But neither the chairman nor the Independent mentioned that Indivisible DuPage, a left-wing radical

group, had rallied hundreds of protesters via social media for the July 14th meeting.

Though nearly 200 protesters planned on attending, the majority of those who spoke at the meeting supported my County Board seat and my history of advocating for DuPage residents.

While 36 speakers spoke in my favor and my unyielding support of law enforcement, only six people spoke against me, including those offended by my participation in a “Back the Blue” rally in Elmhurst several weeks ago, where I admittedly let my emotions get the best of me and, after removing my mask to be heard, shouted at counter protesters who arrived angrily screaming into megaphones.

Those who know me personally know that my priority is to strive to ensure public safety and quality of life for our residents. I thank those who put their lives on the line daily to serve and protect us.

We, in DuPage County, should be proud our law enforcement agencies are staffed with highly trained, seasoned professionals who have a reputation for exercising equal treatment for all, while enforcing the law.

Hindus disheartened over denial of Diwali holiday in Oak Brook schools Butler School District (BSD) 53, which runs public schools in Oak Brook, recently said no to the request of Hindus of keeping schools closed on Diwali, the most popular of their festivals, starting 2021.

“I do not see a path to pursue your request at this time,” BSD 53 Superintendent Dr. Paul O’Malley wrote in an email to Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who spearheaded this campaign. “Specifically, the definition of an official school holiday is determined by the Illinois State Board of Education. All districts have 185 days of school each year to complete the educational plan, while we have flexibility in the allocation of these days, we do not have the ability to declare an

official holiday.”

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, and who urged BSD 53 to adopt Diwali as an official holiday on their 2021-22 school year calendar and beyond, says Hindus are disheartened with denial of Diwali holiday.

“Denying holiday on Diwali was simply ignoring the interests of Hindu students, as it was important to meet the religious and spiritual needs of these pupils who formed a substantial part of the student body in Oak Brook,” Zed asked in a released statement. “If some school districts in various US states could declare Diwali as a holiday, why could not BDS 53 grant it?”

Zed indicated that schools should

make efforts to accommodate the religious requirements of Hindu students and show respect to their faith by not conducting regular business or scheduling classes on Diwali.

“We did not want our students to be put at an unnecessary disadvantage for missing tests/ examinations/ papers, assignments, class work, etc., by taking a day off to observe Diwali,” he said.

Rajan Zed suggested BSD 53 to seriously reconsider into declaring Diwali as an official holiday, thus recognizing the intersection of spirituality and education. Zed noted that awareness about other religions thus created by such holidays like Diwali would make Oak Brook

students well-nurtured, well-balanced, and enlightened citizens of tomorrow.

Zed further stated that Hinduism is rich in festivals and that religious festivals are very dear and sacred to Hindus. Diwali, the festival of lights, aims at dispelling the darkness and lighting up the lives. symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Diwali falls on Thursday, Nov. 4, in 2021.

Hinduism is oldest and third largest religion of the world with about 1.1 billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. There are about three million Hindus in U.S. Awards-winning BSD 53, whose history goes back to early 1900s,

Report: Five teenage female students accuse Glenbard South male student-athlete of sexual assault

According to an exclusive WGNTV report that aired Aug. 7, a male Glenbard South student-athlete has been accused of sexual assault by at least five teenage female students.

The juvenile division of the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office is investigating the allegations.

The WGN-TV report stated that the girls’ parents “want him expelled from the school and at least one administrator fired.”

One of the alleged victims told WGN-TV that in September of 2019, the suspect reportedly “dragged me into the back of his dad’s (Ford F-)150 blue truck, and started making out with me and doing things that I didn’t want happening.”

When asked by the reporter, “Did you tell him no?” the girl replied, “Yes, I said it multiple times.”

According to the report, there are at least five girls who said he allegedly did similar things to them over a period of two years.

Emphasizing that District 87 takes these allegations and students’ safety very seriously, Superintendent Dr. David Larson released a statement that was posted in the WGN-TV report, advising parents and students that “posts and statements on social media do not contain all of the facts or information necessary for the public to draw accurate conclusions. We would like to remind the Glenbard community to read and consume information cautiously.”

Now showing at the Elmhurst History Museum is ‘The Great Midwestern Road Trip’ exhibit.

Pack up the station wagon for a nostalgia-fueled journey to the classic Midwest summer vacation from the 1940s-1970s at the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Elmhurst Art Museum prepares for ‘Wright Before Lloyd’ exhibit Includes self-guided architectural tour of Elmhurst

The Elmhurst Art Museum is preparing to open its “Wright Before the ‘Lloyd’” exhibition which is expected to open Thursday, Sept. 10. It is presented in partnership with the Elmhurst History Museum and their complementary exhibition, Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture of the Interior coming Oct. 23 – Dec. 20.

Through images and artifacts this exhibit highlights exploratory work by the young architect, who signed his work “Frank L. Wright.” Many original materials were damaged and lost due to demolition, fire, and decay, but fragments were saved and reassembled by Chicago’s cultural historian Tim Samuelson to tell the story of Frank Lloyd Wright’s early work. To provide visual context, the original building fragments were re-

stored to their original appearance and colors. In cases where fire and decay left only fragments and shards, cutting-edge technologies have been deployed to make the shattered designs whole again.

At the tail end of the 19th century, a young architect struggled to find his own identity and the essence of the architect he wanted to be. His explorations continued throughout the time he was in his 20s and flirted with styles that included modernism, classicism, Tudor, Colonial, and Japanese.

Turning 30 in 1897, Wright “found” himself. His identity was confidently a synthesis of everything he ever saw, experienced and learned, combined with the ability to meld all into a vital new architecture that was uniquely his own. With his confident identity came a new name:

Frank Lloyd Wright.

What followed was the career of one of the world’s greatest architects, which continued to evolve for more than 70 years until his death at the age of 92. But this is the story of Wright before the “Lloyd” – a journey via images and artifacts to portray his eclectic youthful explorations.

Lizzadro Museum presents ‘Reading the Rocks’

On Saturday, Aug. 29, an interpretive in-person program will be held outdoors in the rock garden of the Lizzadro Museum. It will focus on the different types of rocks and minerals commonly found outside. The program will be followed by a visit to the Museum for a Scavenger Hunt Quiz. Physical distancing and facemasks are required. The outdoor session will take about 30 minutes, followed by a 30-minute scavenger hunt quiz held indoors.

The program is for ages 6 and older and sessions will begin at 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. Regular Museum Admission applies.

Hospital offers six self-care tips during the pandemic

The world has been dealing with coronavirus for months, and the end is not in sight. The social, financial, psychological and physical stressors surrounding the pandemic have been challenging in many ways.

It’s time for people to focus on self-care, which can help people handle the challenges presented by COVID-19.

Ten “frustrated” Republican senators demanded Gov. JB Pritzker allow state offices tasked with processing unemployment claims to reopen in a letter sent exactly five months after Illinois’ first stay-at-home order was issued.

The Department of Employment Security was widely reported to struggle with the historic influx of unemployment filings it received from residents who lost their job due to the COVID-19-induced economic downturn.

While the unemployment rate dropped from the pandemic peak of 16.8 percent in April to 11.3 percent in July, the senators argued Illinoisans continue to have problems applying for and receiving benefits from the department. These issues are “long-standing” and “continue unabated,” they wrote in a letter Aug. 20.

Reopening the Employment Security offices for “face-to-face assistance,” as Secretary of State Jesse White allowed for motor services buildings, is the best solution, the senators added.

“Surely in 6 months, couldn’t we have installed plexiglass barriers and outside air ventilation systems in the IDES offices by now,” they asked in their letter. “Limit the number of people in the offices, socially distance, mask, all that, hell, we don’t care, put a tent up outside and buy laptops for the staff—but get these offices back open. People are hurting.”

Sen. Chapin Rose, from Mahomet, said in a phone conversation Friday that an avenue must exist for state employees to maintain their safety while still opening Employment Security Department doors for Illinoisans to receive assistance. He said if White could design a way for that to happen, schools can resume in-person lessons, and food and banking establishments are open, there is a way for residents to apply for unemployment benefits in

person.

This request for department officials and Pritzker to rectify systemic delays and inaccuracies in unemployment benefits is not new. Most recently, House Republicans asked for the same outcome after residents experienced fraud in a program designed to provide economic relief for those members of the economy who do not normally qualify for such benefits.

When faced with complaints about the Employment Security Department’s trouble in the last six months, Pritzker has maintained that officials are doing everything possible to solve the problem. He has said waning state investment in recent years, outdated infrastructure at the department and federal mandates that call center staff receive certain training before being allowed to assist residents have led to some of the existing issues.

His administration has increased personnel who can assist callers in locating necessary forms and partnered with a private firm to create a system for Illinoisans to apply for unemployment benefits under the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.

The Republican Senators wrote they supported the governor’s actions from March through June to manage the spread of COVID-19, but the IDES system is “broken and ridiculous.”

“It is now past the middle of August. We are moving into our sixth month with a system that is apparently incapable of being fixed—and phone calls from new hires, who have been poorly trained and are unable to respond to basic questions, aren’t helping,” they wrote.

They added they were “unsurprised” when Chicago television network WGN reported that “less than one half of one percent” of calls from residents to the Department of Employment Security were answered.

The outlet analyzed more than 78 million phone calls placed over four months.

York boys golf team looking for even more success

Boys golf is alive and well at York High School.

Longtime coach Jim Borel reported 43 players tried out for the Dukes squad, the most that has shown up since Tiger Woods was in his heyday in the early 2000s, Borel noted.

Of course, York is coming off a 2019 fall where it took fourth place in the state in Class 3A, and the 2020 Dukes varsity roster has some familiar faces from that unit that also won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title.

York went 9-2 in duals last year and also won three regular-season tournaments and a Class 3A regional title.

Bartolone, Connor Polomsky, Joe Bonelli, Jack Leonard and Dylan Stockwell. “They all had success in the summer tournaments this year,” Borel said.

Juniors Sam Wit and Jack Wool also return, “and played very well in tryouts,” Borel added.

Polomsky finished 50th in the state last year and averaged 40.5 for nine throughout the season. Bartolone and Bonelli tied for 66th place at state. Bartolone averaged 38.2, while Bonelli was at 40.6 for nine last year.

Sutter took 75th in the state and averaged 38.7 for nine.

Key newcomers are seniors Nate White and Spano Civella. “Nate and Spano made the team this year and each player has the ability to battle for the top spots in tournaments,”

Borel said.

In terms of the overall makeup of the team, Borel is highly encouraged by what he has seen thus far. “We are loaded with talent throughout the entire varsity lineup,” he said. “We also have great leadership from our seniors who had experience at the IHSA state tournament last year.”

With the COVID-19 pandemic wreaking havoc with fall sports schedules this year, Borel has his fingers crossed that this group will be able to play under the bright lights of the state postseason series.

“Hopefully, there will be a state tournament this year because it would be interesting to see how this team would battle with the best teams in the state,” he said. “We have the senior leadership, talent and

mindset to compete for a state championship.”

York’s 2020 schedule has been whittled down to eight dual meets, plus a tournament at Hinsdale Central and the West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet at Prairie Bluff in Lockport.

“The bad news is we are only allowed to compete in matches within the West Suburban Conference,” Borel explained. “The good news is that some of the best teams in the state play in our conference, so every match we play will be very competitive. Winning the conference, like we did last year, would be an outstanding accomplishment. We finished fourth in the state last year, Glenbard West finished fifth, Hinsdale Central finished eighth, Lyons Township

is one of the top teams in the state, Oak Park-River Forest and Downers Grove North also are very good this year. We are looking forward to playing matches that are meaningful and competitive.”

Borel noted the main change in terms of COVID-19 guidelines outside of the schedule is the rule that players must wear masks most of the time while on the course. “Our players will have to wear masks while on the golf course until they are actually taking a shot,” he said. “Golf is one of the best sports to socially distance and hopefully we can complete the season.”

York opens the 2020 season today at home against Downers Grove South at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale.

York High School’s girls golf team opened its 2020 season with a first-place finish in Saturday’s quad meet at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn. The Dukes won the team title with a score of 361. Downers Grove North claimed second with its score of 378. Downers Grove South (397) placed third, while the host team—Glenbard West—finished fourth with its total of 400. York girls cross country team adapting to new normal

Dukes return plenty from 2019 state-qualifying team

The new normal of participating in sporting events amidst the COVID-19 pandemic has hit home for the York girls cross country team.

“Everything changed…,” York coach Lauren DeAngelis said.

Specifically because of the vast number of girls the York cross country program attracts each year.

“We have worked very hard the last four years on building our team into one program and making all athletes feel they are part of the York girls cross country family,” DeAngelis said. “This year, we have to break our team of 106 girls into three smaller groups due to the re-

strictions, and many of the girls are separate from their friends, family and cannot really get to know everyone on the same level as in past years.”

In terms of the York varsity, the Dukes are coming off a 2019 campaign where they qualified for the Class 3A state meet where they took 18th in Peoria.

York also took third place in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division.

Back for York is sophomore Brooke Berger, who took 67th in state last season (18:02 at state) as a ninth-grader. Junior Katelyn Winton was 96th in the state meet (18:19), sophomore Brianna Bennis was 107th (18:23), junior Bel-

la Swanson was 108th at 18:24, junior Kathleen Buhrfiend was 125th (18:39) and Maureen Buhrfiend was 152nd at the state meet at 18:54. Also back are juniors Charlotte Reedy, Shannon Farrow and Allison Fitzgibbons.

Key newcomers to the team include freshmen Michaela Quinn and Katherine Klimek. “However, we have another strong year of incoming freshmen that have the potential to have a huge impact on the team,” DeAngelis said.

DeAngelis noted York’s strengths this year will be its work ethic, plus its dedication and drive to be better than last year.

“During the summer, we worked a lot on building our aerobic base,

increasing our mileage and dropping our paces for a third year in a row,” she explained. “This team is driven after a state finish in 2019 that they were not hoping for.”

Continual improvement on the mental side of the game will be key, DeAngelis added. “The mental aspect of the sport is where our team focus will be,” she said. “It is the hardest aspect of the sport to coach, in my opinion.”

DeAngelis said the keys to having a successful 2020 season are quite simple: stay healthy and have the opportunity to compete during unprecedented times.

York’s 2020 schedule has been pared down to nine dual meets due to state regulations, and all against

teams from the West Suburban Conference. The Dukes will race against Glenbard West, Oak Park-River Forest and Downers Grove North twice each, plus single duals against Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township and Willowbrook (WSC Gold entrant). Seven of the nine York dual meets will be hosted by York and a majority of those will be contested at Berens Park in Elmhurst.

“As every year, the WSC Silver side is stacked,” DeAngelis said.

“It will be fun to run against these teams in competitive dual meets and hopefully a final conference championship in October.”

York kicks the season off Tuesday, Sept. 1 at Berens at 6 p.m. against local neighbor Willowbrook.

Timothy Christian cross country teams preparing for 2020 season Trojans girls team looking to build on state appearance a year ago

A lot has changed for the Timothy Christian boys and girls cross country teams of late.

For starters, the program has new coaches in Rachel Mirra and Erica Plaisier (the school’s director of health and wellness), who replaced longtime coach Dick Zylstra (retired at the end of last school year).

And in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program also has expanded with 17 boys and 22 girls out Anthony Bucolo fires a pitch for cross country this fall. game.

“I think morale is up with this team,” Mirra said. “With so few

fall sports, this is a larger team than we’ve had in a while. They are very grateful to be able to participate in a sport at all.”

Timothy’s girls team is fresh off a 2019 season where it qualified for the Class 1A state finals meet (where it took 24th in Peoria). Back from last year are senior Elena Munk, juniors Grace Lindemulder, Ella VanderMolen (the team’s highest-returning state place finisher) and Cailey Schuurmann and sophomore Marta Veenstra. “We need to work on pacing,” said Mirra. “We have a fair number of runners new to the sport of cross country and pacing requires experience.”

Mirra said staying healthy and following all COVID-19 safety guidelines so the season doesn’t get cut back further will be key this fall.

Mirra noted most of the program’s

meets were canceled and some were replaced with dual meets.

The boys and girls schedules currently show identical seven-meet slates, including an invitational at Harvest Christian in Elgin on Saturday, Sept. 26, and the MSC meet in Manteno in mid-October.

“I worry that the smaller race sizes means athletes will feel less of the

competitiveness that often brings out a runner’s best performances,” noted Mirra, who wondered if the conference and state postseason will occur this fall.

Timothy is slated to race against town neighbor IC Catholic Prep Saturday at Plunkett Park in Elmhurst.

“We are just trying to take it one day at a time,” she said.

Cougars hitters blasted two home runs in the third inning to help their team secure a 13-9 victory over Hin-

The Cougars defeated three higher-seeded opponents, including the Homer Heat and Tinley Park Bobcats Gold, in earlier playoff rounds on their way to the league title.

IDPH launching external investigation of its nursing home oversight bureau

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Aug. 21 it has initiated an external review of its Bureau of Long-term Care due to delays in investigations of abuse and neglect complaints amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

There have been 7,857 deaths linked to COVID-19 since the pandemic began in Illinois after 24 more were reported Aug. 21. Of those fatalities, 4,319 have occurred in long-term care facilities, according to IDPH. IDPH said in a news release that while the abuse and neglect investigations were temporarily halted, the department continued conduct virus control efforts, including more than 1,000 infection control inspections at 727 facilities.

According to the IDPH website, the Bureau of Long-term Care is responsible for ensuring nursing homes comply with the state Nursing Home Care Act. In cooperation with the Department of Central Management Services, the Bureau conducts certification surveys to ensure facilities receiving state or federal funds abide by applicable federal regulations. \Surveyors conduct about 10,000 surveys each year, including annual licensure inspections and complaint investigations.

But independent review is needed “in response to IDPH’s recent discovery that the Bureau of Long-Term Care was not properly processing and investigating complaints of abuse and neglect at long-term care facilities from approximately March 15 to June 30, 2020,” according to a news release.

That time period included 272 allegations of abuse and neglect, which, according to IDPH, have since been investigated. The factual circumstances of 17 of those complaints were validated in the ensuing investigations, and IDPH is reviewing those findings to determine the appropriate next steps.

“For example, a surveyor could have confirmed that an incident described in a complaint did occur (e.g. a resident fell or was injured), but that the nursing home was not responsible, acted appropriately, or that the nursing home’s conduct did not violate state or federal regulation,” according to a news release.

The inspections were initially delayed despite the fact that guidelines issued by IDPH to limit the number of people entering long-term care facilities did not suspend the Illinois law that requires abuse and neglect complaints to be reviewed within certain timeframes.

In the most serious cases where complaints of abuse or neglect are made, IDPH must conduct surveys of the facility within 24 hours, while complaints of lesser severity must be surveyed within seven days. IDPH did not meet state deadlines for conducting those surveys, in part because of the “improper classifications of some complaints,” according to a news release.

“As soon as IDPH leadership identified that some abuse and neglect complaints had been improperly classified and not investigated in a timely

manner, surveyors were directed to investigate all complaints of abuse and neglect that had not yet been investigated,” according to the release.

The investigations from the affected period were completed with an onsite visit, interviews, review of facility documents, and, where necessary, confirmation that law enforcement had also been notified at the time of the incident.

IDPH said it took immediate action—including “appropriate personnel action”—to ensure completion of the investigations.

IDPH also hired Manatt Health Strategies LLC “to conduct a top to bottom review of the division, with a focus on recommending best practices to ensure proper licensure and oversight activities by the Bureau of LongTerm Care.”
