Allegedly falsified application and then sought disability compensation for undisclosed injury

Karl Echiverri, MD, a neurologist, has joined the Edward Neurosciences Institute and the Elmhurst Neurosciences Institute. Dr. Echiverri is accepting new patients at Karl Echiverri, the Edward-ElmMD hurst Health offices at 1200 S. York St., Suite 3280 in Elmhurst and 3S517 Winfield Rd., Suite A in Warrenville.

A member of the American Academy of Neurology and American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostics Medicine, Dr. Echiverri received his medical degree at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine (Lexington). He completed his internship and residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and Fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

His clinical interests include electromyography, ALS, myasthenia gravis and other disorders of the peripheral nervous system.

In last week’s story and obituary about Christina Smith’s death from a car accident in McHenry County, the vehicles being driven were identified incorrectly, according to Christina’s brother Marc. Christina Smith was driving the white Acura TLX. The other driver was in the black GMC. The Independent regrets the error.

On Friday, Aug. 20, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Roselle Chief of Police Steve Herron announced that a former Roselle fireman had been accused of submitting false documents in his application for employment to the Roselle Fire Department.

On Tuesday, Aug. 17, a $10,000 arrest warrant was issued for Ryan Case, 37, of Woodstock. On Thursday, Aug. 19, Case turned himself in to authorities, posted the necessary bond in the amount of $1,000, and was released from custody. Case has been charged with 12 counts of Forgery, a Class 3 Felony.

On May 13, 2015, as a condition of employment with the Roselle Fire Department, Case submitted to a pre-employment physical exam to determine whether he was fit for duty. During that exam, Case completed documents indicating that he had not lost vision in either eye, temporarily or permanently, that he never had a back injury, and that he did not currently have back pain.

On Sept. 8, 2016, while on duty with the Roselle Fire Department, Case injured his back while moving a standard-sized package of water bottles into a cooler. As a result of his injury, Case was unable to work as a firefighter from that point on and filed for a line-of-duty disability pension, which the Pension Board awarded.

According to the indictment filed against Case on Tuesday, Aug. 17, however, Case “knowingly made a false document apparently capable of defrauding another … where under back injury, no previous injury was circled.” The Indictment also alleges that Case, “with the intent

Berlin finds officer justified in Villa Park shooting “Every case involving the use of deadly force by a police officer must be carefully and thoroughly investigated. Such scrutiny is required to ensure the protection of the civil rights of those involved and to maintain the public’s confidence in law enforcement.”

Those are the beginning words of a statement released by DuPage State’s Attorney Robert Berlin regarding the findings of an investigation into the shooting of Haven Bailey by a Villa Park police officer.

“After a thorough and extensive investigation, … it is my determination that the officer, Sergeant Jose Pagan, who discharged his weapon four times, striking Haven Bailey four times, once in the right chest and three times in the abdomen, was legally justified in his actions and that no criminal charges will be filed against Sgt. Pagan,” Berlin said in his statement.

The incident On Monday, May 24 at approximately 2:06 a.m., a person, later determined to be Haven Bailey, called 911 and reported that at 261 Kenilworth, “somebody was walking around with a gun.” The DuComm operator asked Bailey to describe the person with the gun, and Bailey stated, “White, they’re in a suit and tie, pretty much looks like it.”

When the operator asked Bailey to describe the gun, Bailey responded, “Looks like a pistol, I’m not sure,” adding, “They already drew it, they pulled it out of their pants, I already saw it.”

It appeared that Bailey then left the conversation but did not hang up.

Multiple Villa Park units, including Sgt. Pagan responded to the call.

Sgt. Pagan and another officer were the first on the scene. As the other officer started to walk toward the house, he heard what he believed was a fence or a door swing open near the front of the residence and observed a person, later determined to be Bailey, standing in front of the residence.

Both Sgt. Pagan and the other officer observed a black handgun, later determined to be a CO2 pellet-style gun, in Bailey’s right hand. Both Sgt.

Pagan and the other officer gave loud and clear commands to Bailey to put the gun down. Despite their commands, Bailey did not drop the gun.

At one point, Sgt. Pagan attempted to de-escalate the situation by saying to Bailey, “What’s your name, Bud, what’s going on with you?”

Sgt. Pagan then said, “Come over here.” As Bailey approached Sgt. Pagan with the gun in his hand, Sgt. Pagan again yelled, “Drop the gun, drop the gun, drop the gun.” Bailey chose to ignore those lawful commands and instead began to raise his arm with the gun in hand and point it at Sgt. Pagan.

At this point, Sgt. Pagan fired his gun four times at Bailey.

Paramedics from the Villa Park Fire Department responded to the scene and transported Haven Bailey to Good Samaritan Hospital where, despite the efforts of emergency room personnel, Haven Bailey was pronounced dead at 4:29 a.m.

At the scene, authorities recovered a black CO2 pellet-style gun with “SigSauer 1911” written upon it. Additionally, a DNA sample taken from the CO2 pellet-style gun matched the DNA profile of Bailey.

The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network’s ‘Cue for a Cause is back!

After a pandemic hiatus, the Elmhurst community will gather once again for some end-of-summer fun.

The ‘Cue will take place on Sunday, Sept. 5 from 12 noon-7 p.m. at the city lot at York and Vallette, behind the Knights of Columbus.

Entry is free.

The event centers around an amateur barbecue competition. Teams will be competing to prove their ribs, chicken, and sauce are the best, as determined by a panel of judges. The team with the highest combined score in all three categories will be named the 2021 Grand Champion.

A new addition this year is a baked goods competition. Sweets will take center stage for a while, as bakers compete for the best pie or cookies.

While the public doesn’t get to sample the competitors’ food, they are able to taste the sauces and vote on their favorite. And Barbeque Jim’s will be back serving up its award-winning barbecue to satisfy the cravings brought on by the smell of all that cooking meat.

Beer and wine will also be on sale, and the root beer float and Italian ice booth will be back to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Three live music acts will keep things rocking throughout the day including The School of Rock, Chicago Suppliers, and Common Area Maintenance. Meanwhile, children can stay busy in the kids’ play area which includes Covid-friendly face (or arm or leg) painting, a balloon twister, magician, giant slide and other games.

ing … was justified, the fundamental question is whether Sgt. Pagan reasonably believed Bailey posed an imminent threat of death or great bodily harm to the officer or others. … The ‘reasonableness’ of a particular use of force must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the 20/20 vision of hindsight.

“Given the actions of Haven Bailey …, it was reasonable for Sgt. Pagan to believe Haven Bailey was trying to shoot him and/or other officers at the scene, and that deadly force was necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or others,” Berlin said. “Additionally, with Bailey’s conversations about ‘suicide by cop,’ the evidence is clear that Bailey called 911 … with the intent of committing suicide by provoking the police into using deadly force against himself.

“Therefore, it is the conclusion of my office that Sgt. Pagan acted lawfully and was justified in using deadly force when he fired his service weapon and shot Haven Bailey.”

The investigation In an investigation conducted by the DuPage Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigation Team (MERIT), Sgt. Pagan stated that he thought Bailey was going to shoot him.

“The man was coming straight for me,” he said. “I thought he was going to kill me. … If I had not fired my weapon at that point, I thought I was going to get shot.”

The investigation also found that as Sgt. Pagan attended to Bailey, he asked Bailey why he did not drop the gun to which Bailey responded, “I wanna die.” The shooting and Bailey’s statement were captured on squad car video.

The investigation also uncovered text messages sent by Bailey three minutes before the 911 call … the message read in part, “I’m sorry in advance…” The investigation also revealed that approximately one month prior, Bailey had conversations with a trusted family member in which Bailey talked about “suicide by cop.”

Harassment, threats

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Aug. 13 A victim in the 900 block of N. Virginia told police at 2:37 a.m. that she has received harassing and threatening text messages from a suspect and wanted to document the incident.

The officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results. The officer provided the victim with information on how to obtain an order of protection.

Assault, battery Aug. 18 Police said an officer responded to the 100 block of W. Diversey at 9:37 p.m. for a delayed report of a battery. The complainant told police that the suspect and complainant had a disagreement and the suspect struck her in the face. The suspect denied striking the victim.

There were no signs of injury and no arrests were made.

Aug. 13 Police said while on patrol in the 100 block of E. Fremont at 12:53 a.m., an officer was flagged down by the victim and a witness. The victim told police while catering a party at the above location, he was involved in a verbal argument with a guest. Subsequently, two to three unknown suspects pushed him down and struck him with a metal rod. The officer observed scrapes on the victim’s elbow and hand and a scratch on his forehead. Medics transported the victim to the hospital.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Aug. 18 Amanda J. Kearin, 41, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for criminal damage to property in the 200 block of Michigan at 7:49 p.m. According to police, a victim related after waiting 10 minutes for a child to be loaded onto a school bus, she honked and gestured to Kearin who was in the street talking to the bus driver. Police said Kearin approached the victim’s vehicle, yelled at the victim, and kicked her vehicle’s door causing a crease in the body of the vehicle.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Aug. 15 Police said a complainant in the 600 block of S. Fairfield reported at 9:53 p.m. a group of seven or eight kids rang his doorbell and fled northbound on Berkley Avenue. The complainant stated he has had previous issues with kids throwing eggs at his house and believes the juvenile suspects live in the area.

Aug. 14 A 19-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 500 block of S. Swain at 5:27 p.m. A victim told police that the suspect struck him in the side of the head. An officer observed the victim’s ear was red and swollen.

Police said officers responded to the 600 block of W. North at 2:49 a.m. for the report of an employee who was just battered. The victim related after advising one of the suspects she was not allowed to enter the men’s washroom, she and another suspect became verbally aggressive with the victim and punched the plastic barrier at the counter causing it to strike the victim in the head, and also knocked over a display and a food-warming stand. The suspects left in a white, mid-sized, SUV east-

Aug. 12 A victim in the 900 block of S. York told police at 5:21 p.m. that while employees were having difficulties completing her payment for groceries, an unknown subject became loud and shouted profanities at her. Officers checked the area for the subject with no results.

July 27-Aug. 10 A victim in the 100 block of E. Butterfield told police that a suspect described as a white male between 40 and 50 years old, 5-9, 200 pounds, bald and wearing a bandana with a gray beard frequented her place of employment, bought the victim shoes and a shirt, and told her not to tell her mother. The victim observed the suspect driving near her residence, and after questioning him about it, he told her he was looking for her. An investigation is pending.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor Aug. 18 James Porter, 53, of Wheaton, was issued a citation for possession of open alcohol in public in the 500 block of S. York at 10:56 p.m.

Aug. 15 Ryan Demontee, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor, possession of cannabis under 21, and possession of drug paraphernalia; Joseph Doherty, 18; Mary Flanagan, 18; and Teah Rogers, 18, all of Elmhurst, were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor; and Meera Labine, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor and possession of alcohol by a minor in the 400 block of N. Oak Lawn at 1:25 a.m.

Aug. 13 Jose A. Astudillo Vasquez, 50, of Streamwood, was charged with aggravated DUI, driving while license revoked and illegal transportation of open alcohol, subsequent to the investigation of a suspicious vehicle with the driver, Astudillo Vazquez, allegedly asleep behind the wheel. Police said a search of the vehicle yielded several open beer cans.

Fleeing, eluding

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle or a motorcycle reportedly fled after a traffic stop was conducted.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Aug. 17 Arturo Salgado, 30, of Cicero, was issued citations for speeding, no seat belt and unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near N. York and E. Wrightwood at 3:57 p.m.

William R. Sebastian, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for disobeying a stop sign, no insurance and unlawful possession of medical cannabis by a driver subsequent to a traffic stop near W. Madison and S. Hillside at 1:59 p.m.

Aug. 13 Tyrone L. Birmingham Jr., 20, of Elmhurst, and Tyrell J. Birmingham Jr., 18, of Chicago, were issued citations for possession of cannabis by a person under 21 near Linden and Adams at 12:06 a.m.

Steven Foster, 63, of Bensenville, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance in the 300 block of N. York at 5:44 p.m. Police said an officer and medics responded to the above location for the report of Foster having trouble getting on his bicycle.

Foster was found to be in possession of heroin, according to police.

Public indecency Aug. 18 Joseph A. Stella, 27, of Bensenville, was charged with public indecency in the 100 block of S. York at 6:05 p.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to the above location for the report of Stella exposing his genitalia.

According to police, the officer located Stella, took him into custody, and transported him to the police station.

Suspicious circumstances Aug. 16 Police said officers responded to the 200 block of E. Belden at 1:52 a.m. for the report of a suspicious person. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported an unknown suspect described as a black male attempted to gain entry to his parent’s vehicle which was parked in the driveway. The suspect left the area in a black Lexus SUV last seen heading westbound on Belden Avenue.

Police said a reporting officer met with Elmhurst Hospital staff who reported a juvenile was highly intoxicated and dropped off by a red SUV. The reporting officer met with the victim who stated his friends brought him to the hospital after he became unconscious. The victim’s grandmother was notified who stated she would respond to Elmhurst Hospital to take custody of the victim. DCFS was notified of the incident.

Aug. 15 Police said officers responded to the 900 block of S. York at 8:29 p.m. for the report of a suspicious person. The complainant reported

she witnessed a man with what she believed was a weapon. Officers made contact with the subject who stated he was listening to music in his car and did not have any weapons.

Aug. 11 A victim in the 200 block of Larch told police at 10:30 a.m. that an unknown suspect contacted him by telephone. During the conversation, the victim provided his personal information and allowed the suspect to gain remote access to his computer. Subsequently, the victim has been receiving text messages from PayPal and Coinbase about attempted logins to his accounts. The victim contacted his bank to freeze his accounts and was advised to take steps to protect his identity.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Aug. 18 Theft was reported in the 600 block of N. York at 3:37 p.m. A victim told police that while in the checkout line at a store, two suspects—one described as a black male and the other described as a white female—distracted her by repeatedly asking to help with her groceries. The suspects exited the line and left the store without purchasing anything. While still in line to check out, the victim was unable to locate her cell phone. The cell phone was entered into LEADS. Aug. 17 Theft from a vehicle was reported near Weigel and Grand at 8:34 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the front and rear license plates from a vehicle parked on the street.

Aug. 16 Theft was reported in the 300 block of N. York at 1:24 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported an unknown suspect described as a black male took a bag of cash from the counter.

Jeril U. Bush, 48, of Maywood, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at 5:26 p.m. Police said Bush was found to be in possession of stolen merchandise. Upon further investigation, police said it was also discovered Bush had an active warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said a reporting officer met with a pharmacist at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North who stated he received a call from an unknown suspect claiming to be a physician attempting to fill a prescription. The complainant was able to obtain a phone number and noted it belonged to a suspect who had filled several suspicious prescriptions in the past. This case is pending investigation.

Theft was reported in the 500 block of N. West at 7:39 p.m. A victim reported an unknown suspect(s) took a package from their front porch.

Health Department urges residents to take preventive measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 Special precautions needed as children return to school Across the county, COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to increase. Since last week, the 7-day rolling average of new cases reported in DuPage County increased three percent from 161 new cases per day to 166 new cases per day. Although hospitalizations hit a low in mid-July, with only 10 individuals hospitalized due to COVID-19 in DuPage County, those numbers have also risen dramatically over the past month.

Currently, there are 115 individuals hospitalized, and over 20 individuals receiving the most intensive healthcare services in Intensive Care Units.

Notably, over 97 percent of hospitalized and deceased COVID-19 cases since mid-December 2020 in DuPage County have been in persons not fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

“As we continue to experience high levels of COVID-19 transmission, it is imperative that we come together

as a community to slow the spread of this virus,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department. “Keeping children safe as they return to in-person learning this school year is a top priority. But to achieve this, we must all do our part and get vaccinated as soon as possible while also practicing all preventive measures such as wearing a mask in public indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status.

“By following these evidence-based preventive measures we will help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect those who are vulnerable, including people who are immunocompromised and children under the age of 12 who do not yet have protection against the virus.”

Edgar Fellows: Followers or leaders?

By Jim Nowlan Former Gov. Jim Edgar has created a program that might be the last great hope for struggling Illinois, yet his Edgar Fellows Program has yet to prove its potential.

I propose that the nearly 400 Fellows take on the task, never before tried, of building a strong future for Illinois. The challenge could determine if these young politicos are leaders or followers.

Annually over the past decade, Jim Edgar has gathered 40 of our state’s best and brightest in Urbana for an intensive week of policy seminars with top national figures and experts.

Maybe even more valuable, there is important after-hours social bonding among young men and women across both parties and all regions of the state.

The Fellows, mostly young legislators or wannabes, feel good about themselves for having been selected, and for rubbing shoulders with biggies, but are they really going to become transformational leaders?

After all, most elected officials are, by the nature of the democratic process, followers not leaders. That is, they have to be elected and re-elected—fail to reflect the often-shortsighted wishes of their constituencies, and they might find themselves out of office.

Indeed, four of our greatest Illinois governors never bothered to serve in the Legislature, and they lasted only one term each— leadership has its costs. Thomas Ford (1842-1846) ensured that the state pay off massive debt; John Peter Altgeld (1893-1897) championed higher education and pardoned, hugely unpopular of him, anarchists who had been railroaded toward the gallows; Frank Lowden (1917-1921) modernized state government, and Richard B. Ogilvie (!969-73) enacted an income tax.

So, are today’s up-and-comers

more interested in making careers out of partisan politics, or in making a difference, damn the consequences?

After all, Illinois should be an economic dynamo. As I keep quoting successful friend Jim Schultz of Effingham, in each of the five R’s critical to economic development—rails, roads, runways, rivers and routers— Illinois ranks among the top three American states. And we are located right in the middle of the world’s largest market!

Yet, Illinois is “the sick man” of Midwestern states, the only one losing population. Shame on our “leaders.”

Our problems are fixable: fiscal instability and debt; an unbalanced revenue system too reliant on the property tax; a national perception for being a corrupt state; and a mediocre K-12 education system.

These challenges won’t be solved in a year or two, yet that is exactly how elected officials approach our problems. Each biennium, Illinois lawmakers introduce 6,000 or so bills; this potpourri of policy ideas becomes in effect the sum total of our state’s long-term thinking.

The lawmaker/Fellows can either return to business as usual, that is, to a post-Mike Madigan lawmaking process that appears as polarized, atomized and smallminded as it was before the speaker was dethroned this past year.

Then again, they might create something like an Edgar Fellows Future of Illinois Coalition. The Fellows could hold a plenary gathering each year, break up into task forces, issue nonpartisan action platforms—and provide the leadership to enact them.

Or, the Fellows can be followers, which is much safer politically. The Edgar Fellows need to step up.

The fall of the Afghanistan government and the need to protect U.S. citizens and allies

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi As Afghanistan falls to the Taliban due to the withdrawal of American troops, we must use every resource at our disposal to safely evacuate every American and all our friends and allies across the country.

For 20 years, these brave men and women have helped us work to pursue the dream of a free and democratic Afghanistan through supporting our military as translators and local advisors, serving in the Afghan army and government, and helping us to root out forces of extremism and terror in their country.

Their efforts and sacrifice over the last two decades ensured the safe return home of countless more American service members than would have otherwise been possible.

Now, it is our turn to protect them and their families. To do anything less would be a betrayal of their sacrifices, of the members of our military they helped, and of who we are as a nation.

As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am committed to uncovering the truth of how our withdrawal from Afghanistan went so wrong and how our country failed to anticipate the Taliban’s rapid takeover of the country. At this moment, my foremost priority is ensuring that all of our citizens and our allies currently in Afghanistan are safely evacuated and have the support they need.

Distracted driving—driving while also trying to text, call, clean, eat, or any other activity that detracts from driver focus—killed more than 3,000 people in 2019.

As we modernize and improve our infrastructure, we need to do so in a sustainable and safe way.

We know all too well that the small moment of checking a text while driving could cause a tragedy.

With state laws on distracted driving based on my SAFE TO DRIVE Act, we can make our roads safer.

Illinois Police Chiefs honor former State Senator Chris Nybo Former Illinois State Senator Chris Nybo received the 2021 Laurence P. Mulcrone Public Private Partnership Award from the Illinois Association of Police Chiefs at its annual banquet on Friday, Aug. 20. The prestigious award is presented to an individual who has worked with the private security industry to assist law enforcement.

“All those who work in law enforcement and put

themselves in harm’s way for our safety and security deserve our respect, gratitude and support,” Nybo said. “I am grateful that I have been able to be of assistance to this critical pillar of our society.”

This award honors Laurence P. Mulcrone, a retired Illinois State Police Lieutenant Colonel and former Elmhurst Police Department officer who passed away in 2015.

Roy T. Johnson, 93 Roy T. Johnson, of Elmhurst, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, at the age of 93. He was born in Chicago on April 12, 1928 to Roy Theodore Sr. and Louise Moehle Johnson. He graduated from Crane Tech High School in 1945 and the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1950 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy as an officer during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the Electrical Utility Company Commonwealth Edison for 37 years, retiring in 1990.

Roy was proud of the eight flat he grew up in on Chicago’s west side as his father and grandfather built the home.

He also treasured the standard gauge train he was given when he was one year old. Roy liked to spend time with his family, and he enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to play golf. He lived in Elmhurst for 62 years and was an active member of Yorkfield Presbyterian Church during this time.

Roy was the beloved husband of 69 years to Anita Johnson, née Hart.

He was the loving father to Steven (Sheila) Johnson, Janice Nordwall, and Thomas (Graciela) Johnson; adored grandfather to Kevin (Laura) Johnson, Katie (Jon Erik) Misz, Austin Johnson and Tyler Nordwall; and cherished great grandfather of Adelaide and Madeline Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a son-in-law Robert Nordwall.

UH-1 ‘Huey’ helicopter returns to Cantigny The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park plans to exhibit its UH-1 helicopter, an iconic symbol of the Vietnam War, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 1. The prized macro-artifact will be interpreted outdoors at Cantigny for one month.

The Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, or “Huey,” was the workhorse for Army assault units in Vietnam. Its body style and rotor sound made it one of the most recognized aircraft in the world. The UH-1 was the first turbine powered helicopter to enter production for the U.S. military and entered service in 1959.

Different configurations of the UH-1 were deployed in Vietnam in a variety of roles, including troop transport, air assault, command and control, and evacuation of the wounded. With

its flexibility and speed, the ubiquitous Huey transformed modern warfare, allowing commanders to place combat troops at almost any point on the battlefield, engage the enemy and quickly extract soldiers upon mission completion.

Smithsonian’s Pop-Up Poster Exhibit closes Aug. 29 as well On July 24, 1969, Apollo 11 met President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge of “landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” The poster exhibition, Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission, explores what led the United States to accept this challenge and how the resulting 953,054-mile voyage to the Moon and back was accomplished just eight years after the program was authorized.

Destination Moon examines the mission and recognizes the sacrifices and devotion of more than 400,000 people employed in NASA programs who worked through the trials, tragedies and triumphs of the 20 missions from 1961 to 1969 before Apollo 11.

Elmhurst Art Museum plans Soiree 2021: a ‘Par-Tee’ On Saturday, Oct. 23 from 6 to 11:30 p.m., the Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM) is “taking a mulligan” on last year’s postponed fundraiser.

Presented by the Museum’s Sustaining Fellows, Soirée 2021 will include cocktails, a multi-course dinner, entertainment, and live and silent auctions filled with artwork, vacations and other experiences.

The fundraiser will also provide guests the opportunity to play the artist-designed mini golf course Par Excellence Redux: The Back 9. It’s a “hole” lot of fun!

The EAM is inviting residents to join its efforts to inspire people of all ages.

Elmhurst Hospital named ECCI Business of the Year Elmhurst Hospital/Edward-Elmhurst Health will receive the A.J. “Toche” Terrones Business of the Year Award for 2020 at the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 102nd Annual Awards Gala to be held in the Normandy Banquet Room at Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187 on Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. To register, visit elmhurstchamber.org.

“The acute and life-saving services that Elmhurst Hospital staff and the entire Edward-Elmhurst Health system provided to our community and across DuPage County during a world-wide health care pandemic cannot be overvalued,” stated John R. Quigley, ECCI president and chief executive officer.

“It’s as simple as this: the lives of loved ones were saved by those willing to put their own lives at risk.”

The annual award is given based on

a member’s contributions to the Chamber’s success, to the betterment of both the business community and Elmhurst community, and impact in their field of business, each in the given year and historically, along with years in business and years as a Chamber member.

The award presentation will be made by Kurt Schiele, owner of Elmhurst Auto Group, the 2019 Business of the Year honoree, and Quigley.

Elmhurst Hospital and Edward-Elmhurst Health’s predecessor—Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare merged with Naperville-based Edwards Hospital and Health Services in 2013—have been active Chamber members since 1967.

Elmhurst Hospital and E-EH have regularly been represented on ECCI’s Board of Directors. Currently, Colin Dalough, E-EH’s manager of community and government relations, is an

ECCI Director and a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee.

Preceding Dalough as ECCI Board members were system vice president of operations Laura Eslick, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation executive director Susan Tyburski, Dianne McGinnis (EMH community and government relations), Tracy Vilimek and the late William Von Stein (EMH vice president of development).

The late Robert Magnuson, former EMH president and CEO, was inducted into ECCI’s Civic Hall of Fame in

1997. The EMH Foundation recently contributed $5,000 to the ECCI Centennial Celebration NFP’s $50,000 Civic Hall of Fame funding goal to create a user-friendly, technology-based public memorial.

Cesar Chavez’s son to present ‘Lessons Learned From My Father’ As a boy in the early 1960s, Paul Chavez joined his seven brothers and sisters in handing out leaflets in farm towns throughout California’s Central Valley; and helped his father, Cesar Chavez, to build the union that would become the United Farm Workers.

On Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center, Paul Chavez will present “Lessons Learned From My Father,” this year’s Cesar Chavez Intercultural Lecture at Elmhurst University.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the annual lecture series, which was created in 1996 as part of Hispanic Heritage Month activities at Elmhurst.

Paul Chavez has spent his entire life with the farm worker movement as a union organizer, negotiator and assistant to his father. Since 1991 he also has led the Cesar Chavez Foundation, which works to improve the lives of farm workers and other poor working families throughout the Southwest.

Under Paul Chavez’s leadership, the Cesar Chavez Foundation built and operates an affordable housing portfolio with nearly 5,000 units in four states. Chavez also expanded the Foundation’s Communications Fund with a Spanish- and English-language educational radio network that has 1.5 million daily listeners and followers. The Foundation’s Education Fund provides direct academic services and consulting to school districts, and the National Chavez Center preserves and promotes the legacy of Cesar Chavez across the nation.

Illinois lawmakers schedule Aug. 31 session to redraw legislative maps in light of census data CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

Lawmakers will head back to the Capitol on Tuesday, Aug. 31, to consider changes to the legislative maps that Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law earlier this year.

Those maps—which set the new boundaries for the 118 state House and 59 state Senate districts for the next decade—were passed based on survey data in May, as the full U.S. Census block-level numbers were not made available until Aug. 12.

The release of that data, however, appears to show population deviations far exceeding the 10 percent threshold allowed under Supreme Court precedent, so some changes are necessary to put the maps in compliance.

The remap effort, which occurs every 10 years after the census, was a key talking point for Republicans during their day at the Illinois State Fair on Aug. 19, which followed Governor’s Day, a celebration of Democrats, the day prior.

In the run-up to the legislative maps passing, GOP leaders warned that using survey data as opposed to the full census results would lead to the exact problem the maps now face.

But if Democrats would have waited on the census data, they would have missed a key deadline in the Illinois Constitution that would have put mapmaking in the hands of a bipartisan commission and possibly given Republicans a 50-50 shot at mapmaking control.

Republicans have filed a lawsuit asking a federal panel to send the matter to a commission as described in the constitution.

On Thursday, the GOP filed a motion for summary judgement in light of the census data, an effort to send the matter to a commission and void the current version of the legislative maps.

But Democrats filed a motion on Aug. 19 to dismiss the Republicans’ amended complaint, and another Aug. 20 seeking to halt the process until Sept. 1, after the one-day session.

In their court filing to dismiss, lawyers for the Democrats called the GOP effort to send the maps to a commission one “to exploit exigencies resulting from a global pandemic, which were out of the legislature’s control, for political gain.”

The matter is otherwise set for trial at the end of September.

Senate Minority Leader Dan McConchie, R-Hawthorn Woods, characterized Democrats as trying to “pull a fast one” and acting “pure and simple for power” during a GOP breakfast in Springfield prior to Republican Day at the State Fair on Aug. 19.

Davis got a speaking spot at Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair along with two of the state’s other sitting GOP members of congress, while the current gubernatorial candidates did not.

The gubernatorial field as it stands includes Darren Bailey, a state senator from Xenia who was a Pritzker

antagonist throughout the pandemic, challenging the governor’s executive orders; Gary Rabine, a suburban paving business owner; and Paul Schimpf, a former state senator and 2014 GOP candidate for attorney general.

didates as well, including state Rep. Tom Demmer, who said “nothing’s off the table right now” as he considers a statewide run, although he specifically mentioned the secretary of state’s office.

House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, and Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, issued a joint statement confirming the Aug. 31 one-day session.

“Our goal has always been to implement a map that is fair and represents the diversity of the population of Illinois,” Harmon said in the statement. “With census data now available, we will take any necessary legislative action with that same goal in mind.”

Congressional maps The Democrats appeared to indicate the session would focus on only state, not congressional mapmaking.

Per the census, Illinois will drop from 18 to 17 congressional districts, and Democrats are expected to draw the maps in a way that would make it difficult for Republicans to maintain the five seats they have now.

How that map is drawn is expected to play a major role in how the statewide Republican field will shape up ahead of 2022’s June 28 primary, which was postponed from March due to the census delays.

That’s largely because U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, a Taylorville Republican, is holding out his decision on what to do next until he sees the congressional maps drawn by Democrats.

“My job is to serve the constituents of the 13th District right now,” Davis said. “My ability to continue to do that job is going to depend upon the supermajority Democrats who run the House and the Senate here in the Statehouse, and also Gov. Pritzker who has broken his promise already to the voters of Illinois, that he would not sign legislatively drawn maps.”

While Davis waits to see if continuing his congressional career can remain viable amid a new map, he’s considering a run for governor.

Pritzker noncommittal on eviction moratorium amid COVID-19 surge

Gov. JB Pritzker didn’t directly say last week whether he would extend the state’s eviction moratorium for those facing hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic as cases, deaths and hospitalizations for the virus continue to rise.

“We’ve looked at that, we continue to look at it. We’ll make a decision about that soon,” Pritzker said at an unrelated news conference in Springfield when asked if he would extend the moratorium, which is set to expire at the end of the month.

The governor’s comments come as COVID-19 intensive care bed utilization has increased by 290 percent on a weekly average since July 11.

Positivity rates and death counts also continue to rise, although vaccinations have picked up in recent days as well.

When it comes to evictions, Illinois courts are currently under a Supreme Court order until Sept. 1 allowing for the filing of eviction claims but staying certain final trials and judgments.

Pritzker’s current disaster declaration and associated eviction moratorium was due to be renewed or expire on Aug. 21.

The governor has routinely extended his executive orders at the

end of the 30-day disaster declaration each month, and he has made several changes to eviction orders along the way, including most recently allowing for evictions of “non-covered persons.”

The state is in the process of paying out about $500 million through the Illinois Rental Payment Program run by the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Illinois Department of Human Services. Thus far, 24,174 applicants have received more than $209.7 million from the fund, according to IHDA’s website.

That’s an average of about $8,600 per household.

IHDA has received more than 97,000 applications thus far, and the agency estimated earlier this month that it could help about 63,000 renters with the $500 million in funding.

While the window to apply through the IHDA portal has closed, aid is still available through IDHS service providers at https://www.illinoisrentalassistance.org.

A court-based program designed to connect renters with aid is set to launch in September.

“So a lot of work has gone into ramping down the eviction moratorium,” Pritzker said, noting the federal government has filed its own moratorium lasting through Oct. 3.

But that moratorium, which prevents

enforcement action on evictions in virtually all Illinois counties, is being challenged in the courts.

“So we’ll be working with all of the organizations across the state as well as renters and landlords to alleviate the pain that people may experience,” Pritzker said. “But either way people won’t be, you know, forced out of their homes right away, if they are part of this process that

we’ve created.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health only reports breakthrough cases and deaths for people who have been vaccinated every Wednesday, and has not reported case counts for those who have been vaccinated. Since Jan. 1, only 189 of the COVID-19 related deaths—or 2.68 percent—have been in unvaccinated individuals.

IC Catholic Prep boys golf team third at tough Glen Oak invitational Jann Atendido second in talented field; Knights shoot under par against R-B; Zazz Atendido 4-under

IC Catholic Prep boys golf coach Don Sujack refers to the early-season Glen Oak invitational in Glen Ellyn as a “big boy tournament course.”

“It’s the best tournament in the state for boys to play in,” he said.

“They treat everyone like they are members. It’s a strong field.”

The Knights turned in a big-boy team performance, finishing third in the Glen Oak field. IC Catholic Prep had a 321. Glenbard West won the event with an incredible 289 score.

The Knights were three shots behind second-place Wheaton Academy (318).

“Glenbard West is a beast and we had a decent showing,” Sujack said. “if we can get healthy, we can compete with any time, and it bodes well for late in the season.”

Jann Atendido led the way for IC Catholic Prep, shooting even-par 72 to finish in second individually.

Zazz Atendido shot 80, while Nick Zanoni finished with an 83 and PJ Wisniewski had an 89.

“It was everyone’s first time seeing the course, and Glen Oak requires a lot of local knowledge in order to play it well,” Sujack noted. “While I am not displeased with our score, we all left a lot of shots out there. The kids loved the tournament, however,

and everyone can’t wait to get back.

It was a treat to watch Jann compete on a premier golf course against a premier field. The only guy who beat him is the USA Today/Golfweek top-ranked golfer in the IHSA (Glenbard West senior John Wild).

It’s becoming more and more clear that over the next 14 months, Jann will be included in the conversation for next year’s top ranking.”

Sujack was pleased with how the team performed as a whole.

“As a team, we accomplished some goals, too,” he said. “It’s the best tournament in the state, and arguably the best team in the state won, but we acquitted ourselves well. We’re possibly a year away from being able to post the kind of scores Glenbard West did, but we competed strongly against some large schools with accomplished golf programs. We should have taken second, but we’ll have a chance to address that (this week) when Wheaton Academy comes to visit.”

In other action, IC Catholic Prep downed Aurora Central Catholic 160-175 at Phillips Park in Aurora.

Jann Atendido and Zazz Atendido were co-medalists — both shot 38.

Zanoni, Wisniewski and Johnny Hilgart each shot 42.

IC Catholic Prep then turned on the jets to close out last week with a 140-170 win (4-under par as a team) over Riverside-Brookfield at Downers Grove Golf Course. Zazz Atendido was the medalist with a 4-under 32 round. Jann Atendido shot 2-under 34, while Zanoni was even-par 36 and Wisniewski shot 38.

“We keep on going,” Sujack said. “Going under par as a team at Downers Grove Golf Course is the

best we’ve done score-wise in my 19 years here.

“After three tournaments in the first five days of competition, the intensity level for an after-school dual meet in Aurora wasn’t quite as high as it had been and that’s understandable. We posted a nice score, but we all felt we were capable of better.”

Sujack said the Riverside-Brookfield below-par team effort was a different story.

“Everyone was refreshed, ready and focused from the first tee shot.

Zazz and Jann really put on a show,” he said. “Playing together in a match for the first time, they combined for six birdies and an eagle. It might not be the last time we see that pairing.

Nick and PJ were also quite formidable. A handful of birdies for them on a golf course that has a lot of challenges bodes well for us as we head into a challenging week.”

IC Catholic Prep was slated to play Metro Suburban Conference heavyweight Wheaton Academy at Maple Meadows earlier in the week and North Shore Country Day at the Merit Club in Libertyville Wednesday.

“This will be a challenging week for us, but we certainly are going into it with some wind in our sails,” Sujack said. “Wheaton Academy is a team we have to go through in order to win conference. They are very strong again this year and they played quite well at Glen Oak. North Shore’s program is always strong and we get to tee it up at one of the top private clubs in Illinois. The York girls golf team kicked off its 2021 season in fine fashion with a 167-186 West Suburban Conference win against Downers Grove South.

Hannah Blattner led the Dukes with a medalist-round 39. Audrey

Matias shot 40, while Charlie Matias shot 45 and Macy Fries rounded out the Dukes’ scorecard with a 45.

Cookie Klinger shot 46 and Ellie Wiygul finished with a 49.

York also won the junior varsity contest by a 172-233 count. Mia Koenigsberger was the meet medal-

ist with a 41. Lily Rennick shot 42, while Katie Leiman finished with a 44 and Elise Moran shot 45. Daly Wangler and Olivia Flessner each finished with 49s.

The Dukes, under the direction of new head coach Matt Monken, are in good shape when it comes to experi-

ence. Fries, Audrey Matias, Wiygul, Klinger and Moran all are senior veterans, as is Emily Thomas. Audrey Matias is a four-year varsity player.

Charlie Matias (sophomore) and Koenigsberger (freshman) are key newcomers for Monken’s group.

Having battle-tested veterans is something the Timothy Christian boys golf team won’t lack this season.

Coach Jeff Vander Naald’s squad

features a healthy amount of players returning from a team that went 8-5 overall and 7-5 in Metro Suburban Conference play during last year’s COVID-19-altered season.

Back for the Trojans are seniors Ben McMillian and Ben Vander Wal,

along with junior Jack Bone and sophomore Josh McMillian. Bone was an all-MSC performer in 2020.

“I think one of our strengths this year will be our experience and maturity,” Vander Naald said. “Our varsity players are dedicated and strive

for their best every day. We have great leaders on the team and they do a great job of setting expectations.

“What impressed me the most is how they work together and continue to push each other.”

Vander Naald noted Ben McMillian and Bone, in particular, have stepped things up of late. “Ben and Jack are two players who have really stepped up over the summer and dedicated themselves to the game,” he said. “They have put in a lot of hard work over the summer and I know that will benefit them this upcoming season.”

With experience a key positive, Vander Naald is optimistic about this fall. “I think we will have a strong team this year,” he said. “We have a lot of potential and it’s just a matter of tapping into that potential at the right time.”

As Bailey approached Sergeant Pagan with the gun in his hand, Sergeant Pagan again yelled, “drop the gun, drop the gun, drop the gun.”

Haven Bailey chose to ignore those lawful commands and instead began to raise his arm with gun in hand at Sergeant Pagan. Sergeant Pagan fired his gun four times at Bailey at this point.

Paramedics from the Villa Park Fire Department responded to the scene and transported Haven Bailey to Good Samaritan Hospital where, despite the efforts of emergency room personnel, Haven Bailey was pronounced dead at 4:29 a.m.

When processing the scene, authorities recovered a black CO2 pellet-style gun with “SigSauer 1911” written upon it. Additionally, a DNA sample taken from the CO2 pellet-style gun matched the DNA profile of Haven Bailey.

The above facts have been evaluated in the context of Illinois law governing the justifiable use of deadly force. In accordance with Illinois law, my staff and I have reviewed the facts and circumstances of the case with special consideration given to the perspective of the officer on the scene. It is important to remember that police officers are often forced to make split-second decisions about the appropriate amount of force necessary to bring a tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving situation under control.

An investigation into the shooting conducted by the DuPage Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigation Team (MERIT) found that Bailey was walking straight toward Sergeant Pagan, armed with a gun and closing distance on him.

At this time Sergeant Pagan thought Bailey was going to shoot him. Sergeant Pagan stated, “The man was coming straight for me.

I thought he was going to kill me.”

Sergeant Pagan decided to fire his gun when Bailey got too close to him, stating, “if I had not fired my weapon at that point, I thought I was going to get shot.”

After shooting the person, Sergeant Pagan saw Bailey fall and saw the gun fall to Bailey’s side. The investigation also found that as Sergeant Pagan attended to Bailey, he asked Bailey why he did not drop the gun to which Bailey responded, “I wanna die.”

The shooting and Bailey’s statement to Sergeant Pagan were all captured on squad car video. The investigation also uncovered text messages sent by Bailey three minutes before the 911 call showing Bailey wearing a dark colored shirt and tie and a message that read in part, “I’m sorry in advance…” The investigation also revealed that approximately one month prior, Bailey had conversations with a trusted family member in which Bailey talked about “suicide by cop.”

In determining whether the shooting of Haven Bailey was justified, the fundamental question to be answered is whether Sergeant Pagan reasonably believed that Bailey posed an imminent threat of death or great bodily harm to the officer or others.

Editor’s note: On Monday, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin issued the following statements regarding the fatal shooting in May of Haven A. Bailey in Villa Park that involved a Villa Park police officer.

Every case involving the use of deadly force by a police officer must be carefully and thoroughly investigated. Such scrutiny is required to ensure the protection of the civil rights of those involved and to maintain the public’s confidence in law enforcement.

After a thorough and extensive investigation surrounding the shooting of Haven Bailey by a Villa Park police officer, it is my determination that the officer, Sgt. Jose Pagan, who discharged his weapon four times, striking Haven Bailey four times, once in the right chest and three times in the abdomen, was legally justified in his actions and that no criminal charges will be filed against Sergeant Pagan.

In reaching this conclusion, my staff and I carefully reviewed the applicable law and thoroughly examined all the evidence, including but not limited to: • Police reports • Statements from those involved • Witness accounts • Physical evidence • Photographs • In-car squad videos • 9-1-1 calls • Cellular phone data On May 24, at approximately 2:06 a.m., a person, later determined to be Haven Bailey called 911 and reported “261 Kenilworth, somebody walking around with a gun.”

The DuComm operator asked Bailey to describe the person with a gun, and Bailey stated, “White, they’re in a suit and tie, pretty much looks like it.” The DuComm operator asked Bailey to describe the gun and Bailey responded, “Looks like a pistol, I’m not sure.” Bailey then stated, “They already drew it, they pulled it out of their pants, I already saw it.”

It appeared that Bailey then left the conversation but did not hang up.

Multiple Villa Park units, including Sergeant Pagan responded to the call.

Sergeant Pagan and another officer were the first officers to arrive on the scene. As the other officer started to walk toward the house, he heard what he believed was a fence or door swing open near the front of the residence and observed a person, later determined to be Haven Bailey, standing to the east side of the front of the residence.

Both Sergeant Pagan and the other officer observed a black handgun, later determined to be a CO2 pellet-style gun, in Bailey’s right hand.

Both Sergeant Pagan and the other officer gave loud and clear commands to Bailey to put the gun down including “drop the gun,” “please put the gun down, please put the gun down,” and “drop the gun please.”

Despite their commands, Bailey did not drop the gun.

At one point in time, Sergeant Pagan attempted to de-escalate the situation by saying to Bailey, “What’s your name Bud, what’s going on with you?” Sergeant Pagan then said,

Tech-savvy teens and young adults falling for online scams at a higher rate than seniors Victims 20 and younger grew by 156 percent from 2017 to 2020 compared to 112 percent for seniors. The 9,053 young victims in 2017 jumped to 23,186 last year.

Seniors remain by far the most victimized group overall with 105,301 victims losing $966 million in 2020, but the surge of Gen Z victims is unprecedented and speaks to the growing sophistication of scammers.

SocialCatfish.com released a study on the State of Internet Scams 2021 using 2021 data from the FBI, IC3 and FTC. Overall a record $4.2 billion was lost to on-

that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or another, or the commission of a forcible felony.

Given the actions of Haven Bailey on the early morning of May 24, Bailey’s refusal to obey repeated police commands to drop the weapon while walking towards Sergeant Pagan with a BB gun that looked exactly like a firearm in hand, it was reasonable for Sergeant Pagan to believe Haven Bailey was trying to shoot him and/or other officers at the scene, and that deadly force was necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or others.4 Additionally, considering Bailey’s response to Sergeant Pagan of “I wanna die” when asked why he didn’t drop the gun and Bailey’s conversations about suicide by cop, the evidence is clear that Haven Bailey called 911 and reported a “person with a gun” with the intent of committing suicide by provoking the police into using deadly force against himself.

Therefore, it is the conclusion of my office that Sergeant Pagan acted lawfully and was justified in using deadly force when he fired his service weapon and shot Haven Bailey.

All of the Villa Park Police officers involved in this incident should be commended for their professionalism during this extremely tense incident. Their concern for the safety and well-being of not only Haven Bailey, but their fellow officers and the public at large, as well as their efforts to resolve the situation in a peaceful manner is a testament to the excellent training they receive from the Villa Park Police Department.

Unfortunately, Haven Bailey’s failure to obey the officers’ repeated commands and ensuing threatening behavior resulted in Sergeant Pagan fatally discharging his weapon.

I would like to thank the DuPage County MERIT Public Integrity Team for conducting a thorough and independent investigation, as well as Assistant State’s Attorney Nancy Donahoe for her valuable assistance.

It is indeed heartbreaking when a loved one meets an untimely death. The sad truth in the tragic death of Haven Bailey, however, is that Haven saw suicide as the only way to find true peace. On behalf of the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, I offer our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of Haven Bailey as they grieve the loss of a loved one.

How to avoid: Never send money or bank information to anyone you do not know.

Romance scams: Also known as catfishing, this is when scammers steal photos of good-looking people and target young, vulnerable people online. They make the victim fall in love and begin asking for money.

How to avoid: Never give money to anyone you meet online. If they will not video chat or meet, they are a scammer.

Sextortion scams: The advent of smartphones led to sexting, which has now led to

sextortion. Scammers pose as an attractive person on OnlyFans or Snapchat, hooks the target and moves the conversation over to text. They send an explicit image and ask for one in return.

Once received, they reveal themselves to be scammers and threaten to send the photo to all contacts in the person’s phone and post the picture on the Internet.

How to avoid: Avoid sending explicit images online or by phone. If the person you are falling for will not meet or video chat think twice before sending anything.

Online shopping: Fake websites are created that look like an online store selling items at a huge discount. If you buy, the item never arrives, they pocket the money and steal your credit card and personal information for future online theft.

How to avoid: Make sure the website is not full of typos. If the “customer service” email is “gmail.com” or “yahoo.com” that is a red flag.

Research the company.

If you are the victim of a scam or attempted scam report it to the FTC, IC3, FBI, and IdentityTheft.gov.

Par Excellence Redux: The Front 9 remains on display at EAM Sign up for tee times, bring friends and colleagues In an interesting collision of recreation and art, the Elmhurst Art Museum commissioned a two-part miniature golf course of playable works of art created by local and national artists.

This course, titled Par Excellence Redux, is a reimagining of the wildly popular exhibition Par Excellence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago back in 1988.

A public call for proposals for area artists, designers, and architects attracted diverse people, who designed holes of varying difficulty, including the museum’s Teen Art Council.

The custom-built playable miniature golf course is being split into two exhibits: The Front 9 (open now) and The Back 9 (opening in the fall). Designed to use the museum’s galleries with COVID protocols, the two 9-hole courses promise an unusual twist on a familiar pastime.

From social justice to the occult, the course includes a surprisingly varied collection of themes and forms, including a fortune-telling hole and one that challenges players with an optical illusion.
