Guests from two wedding receptions displaced to Allegra parking lot

The Elmhurst Fire Department was one of several from area communities to respond to a fire that broke out at Allegra Banquets in the 600 block of St. Charles Road in Villa Park, formerly known as Villa Nova. The blaze reportedly began about 6:30 p.m., when guests in the banquet rooms were asked to evacuate and move outdoors into the parking lot. There were two bridal parties holding wedding receptions going on inside the facility when the fire broke out.

Firefighters were tight-lipped about details, but did say it was not a kitchen fire. Officials were guarding the far rear exit door in the back of the building that opens into a banquet hall during the period after the fire had been extinguished.

Wedding guests including two bride-and-groom couples stood outside in the parking lot, awaiting the all-clear. A musical quartet hired for one of the receptions was outside playing music. There was no report of estimated damages to the facility, but no injuries were reported.

ECAF salutes Joe Schamberger at 22nd Annual Golf Classic Two families who received assistance gave their thanks at dinner

Friday, Aug. 18 was a beautiful day to hit the links and that made for a good turnout for the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation (ECAF) as the 22nd Annual Golf Classic was held at White Pines Golf Club in Bensenville. In addition to raising funds for the Foundation, the golf outing serves to honor a member of the community with its “Friend of the Children” award.

The ECAF Golf Committee was co-chaired by Jeff Crum, Kevin Diamond and Terry Jaeger with help from Committee members Brian Stalker, Steve Weatherford, Dave Hansen, Ken Larson, Bob Robertson, Dan Sullivan and Scott Ship-

man.

ECAF President Michael Burroughs served as Master of Ceremonies during the program portion of the evening, when golf prizes were awarded and raffle tickets were drawn. Burroughs then introduced Mike LaSpisa who bestowed the award upon Joe Schamberger.

LaSpisa is the founder of Kick Off for Kids.

“For 25 years, he’s done so many things for this community,” LaSpisa said of Schamberger after listing off his contributions to the Knights of Columbus, the Elmhurst Cycling Classic, Immaculate Conception, the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, the Ray Graham Association golf outing and many others.

“I didn’t ever do this for recog-

nition,” Schamberger said. “I thank you, I’m very honored and humbled. This is awesome.”

All previous Friend of the Children designees who attended were invited to join Schamberger at the front for a photo.

The Card family Katrena Card and her 7-yearold son Avery attended the ECAF golf outing, where Katrena took the podium to talk about her son who was in a wheelchair designed for his specific needs. She told about her triplets, of which Avery is one.

The other two are in wheelchairs as well, but are not as severely disabled as Avery. There are two other children in the family as well, making five for Katrena who is a single

mom. She worked at Elmhurst Hospital, where she set up the wound care division still in use today.

“We are so grateful to ECAF for helping us procure the van through the Roesch [Automotive Group],” Katrena said. “I don’t know what I would have done without you.”

The Jendreas family Dottie Jendreas, the mother of another family who was assisted

by ECAF, also spoke after dinner about her daughter Hope.

Hope is a 7th grader at Sandburg Middle School who had a stroke when she was very young, confining her to a wheelchair and rendering her non-verbal. ECAF also assisted the Jendreas family in procuring a van which allows them to

take Hope places easily.

“As she got older, she became too heavy to lift in and out of a vehicle, so we were stuck at home most of the time,” Dottie said. “The wheelchair-accessible van has just opened the world to us. Hope can go places, she’s not always confined to home, and we’ve even been able to take a vacation.”

During the public forum portion of the City Council meeting held on Monday, Aug. 21, about 10 or 15 people stepped up to express their aggravation, discontent and, in some cases, anger at the Fly Quiet/Runway Rotation program, put in place by the Chicago Department of Aviation to test the effect of rotating the use of runways at O’Hare. That is, they rotate the use of certain runways, sending flights over different sections of the municipalities surrounding the third busiest airport in the world.

One resident came to the microphone with a long list and described the first night the testing began. He said the first plane went over his house about 3 a.m., then another 3:04, then 3:06, etc. The homeowner continued reading the times he heard planes flew overhead; they were between two and four minutes apart up

said homeowner Carol Snyder, who brought some statistics to light.

According to Snyder, Tests 1 and 2 each ran for a 12-week period, but Elmhurst was only affected for three.

For Test 3, Elmhurst was impacted during six of the 12 weeks.

“That’s a 400% increase,” she said. “Test #3 is intolerable.”

City stands in opposition via formal resolution Toward the end of the meeting, the City Council agenda contained a Resolution In Opposition To The City Of Chicago’s Fly Quiet/Runway Rotation Test Program, which didn’t take long to pass by a unanimous vote of 14-0. The resolution said that the community supports the O’Hare Modernization Plan (OMP),

but that recent changes in the Fly Quiet Program have “adversely affected the City of Elmhurst.”

The document points out that while the Chicago Department of Aviation has implemented some noise abatement procedures over the past several years, none of the efforts have been effective.

A part of resolution reads: “… the Test Program has not abated air traffic noise within Elmhurst; and, as a result, Elmhurst strongly opposes the Test Program in that [it] utilizes runways affecting Elmhurst at a disproportionate rate.”

In the last portion of the resolution, Section 3 reads: “The corporate authorities hereby strongly oppose the Fly Quiet/Runway Rotation Test Program implemented by Chicago.

EWAN Board prepares for ‘Cue for a Cause

Another resident said her daughter came downstairs on the first day of school in tears because she hadn’t slept since about 3 a.m., due to airplane noise. She had been very excited for the first day of school, but then felt terrible because she was so tired.

“Please act on our behalf,” the woman said. “We chose to live in Elmhurst - so many people grew up here, went off to school and then came back to settle in Elmhurst because they love the community so much. I want my daughter to feel the same way.”

Elmhurst is currently a part of Test 3, having already taken part in Test 1 and 2. It was clear to everyone in Council Chambers — from residents to the elected officials on the dais — Test 3 has been the worst.

“This cannot be allowed to stand, while we wait for the multi-million dollar renovation of O’Hare,”

The Elmhurst Walk-in Assistance Network (EWAN) is gearing up for the 3rd annual ‘Cue for a Cause,’ its very own rib fest, set for Sunday, Sept. 3 from 12 noon to 8 p.m.

At press time, there were 21 teams signed up to compete in the ‘Cue, held in the municipal parking lot at York and Vallette, behind the Knights of Columbus.

Participants will compete not only in the categories of best ribs and best sauce, but can opt to make a chicken dish as well. The highest cumulative score in all three areas will win one lucky team the title of Grand Champion. It will be announced at about 7:30 p.m.

Teams will be cooking for judges only. The public is invited to come cheer on the competitors, but they do not get to taste the competitors’ ribs, but can vote on their favorite sauce.

But fear not! There will barbecue available from Barbecue Jim’s, along with beer and soft drinks. New this year will be a Root Beer Float stand and an Italian ice stand.

Rib-eating competition For those whose talents lie in eating ribs rather than making them, another new feature of the ‘Cue this year will be a rib eating contest offered in two age brackets. One contest will be held at 2 p.m. for 6-12 year olds; and another at 5 p.m. for those 13 and older. Competitors

names will be chosen in a lottery type system.

Musical entertainment There will be musical entertainment taking place most of the day.

Three bands are scheduled to play.

Cary Kanno has kind of a mellow vibe, suitable for a hot afternoon.

He’ll be followed by the Elmhurst College Jazz Band at 3 p.m. The final band of the day is the Petty Cash Band, a high energy band performing Tom Petty and Johnny Cash covers, among others.

Silent auction There will be silent auction items and raffle prizes, thanks to the hard work of EWAN volunteers Jaynie Dunne and Jan Kinsella. Among the prizes are: two tickets to the play Hamilton; four tickets for a Cubs/ Cardinals game on Sept. 15; a cooking demonstration for ten at Marco Conte’s new business, Marco’s Table; a painting party at the soon-toopen Pinot’s Pallet; tickets to sports events; fall floral arrangements; whiskey; certificates for local restaurants and more.

Children’s area A kids area will be available with activities like face painting, a giant slide, a Lego® building area. In addition, a host of giant-sized games like, Jenga, Checkers, Connect 4, have been made especially for the event by Luke Rodgers, a sophomore at York and a Boy Scout in Troop 82, who made the games as his Eagle Scout project.

There will also be visit from a Jedi Knight and a magic show performed

by Bob James.

Here’s what’s going on at the Elmhurst Park District

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on August 14 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. Commissioner Doug Ennis and Commissioner Tim Sheehan were absent from the meeting.

There were no public comments.

Asbestos abatement scheduled at purchased properties Board members voted unanimously to award the total base bid of an amount not to exceed $58,000 to Colfax Corporation of Chicago for asbestos abatement at 207 North Hampshire Avenue (near East End Park) and 447 Armitage Avenue (near Berens Park). The park district

recently acquired both properties with the intention to demolish them to expand recreational opportunities, as well as providing additional open green space.

The district needs to hire a professional contractor to dispose of all asbestos on both premises.

Proper asbestos abatement work must comply with requirements set by the state of Illinois, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Seven companies submitted sealed bids for the project, which advertised that the bid for abatement at the two properties would be awarded to one vendor.

Colfax Corporation submitted the lowest, most responsible lump sum total bid of $58,000.

The asbestos abatement work at the two sites is scheduled to run from Sept. 11 through Oct. 6.

Board provides City with $330,000 for salt dome storage The board also voted unanimously to approve a distribution of nearly $330,000 to the City of Elmhurst to cover the park district’s 25-percent obligation toward the salt dome storage facility at 985 S. Riverside Drive.

As part of the agreement between the park district and the city regarding the city’s use of property at York Commons for Fire Station No. 2, the park district uses space and amenities at the city maintenance facility at 985 S. Riverside Drive.

The agreement calls for the park district to contribute 25 percent toward the associated costs at the facility. In 2016, the city began construction of a new salt dome at the back of the maintenance facility. The total cost was slightly more than $1.3 million. The park district is contributing 25 percent toward that cost—which amounts to nearly $330,000.

rate increase, not a bond sale. He said a rate increase would provide more flexibility to pay for various amenities. A referendum for a bond sale, on the other hand, would likely ask voters to approve a specific project.

The park district board will hold its next meeting on Aug. 28.

Vision 2020 plan could lead to referendum In discussing the park district’s recently approved Vision 2020 comprehensive and strategic plan, Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers noted the extensive community surveys that were a component of developing the plan. Rogers stated the surveys indicate the community’s interest in facilities and services that are beyond the district’s funding abilities. He advised the district to consider the possibility of exploring a referendum.

Rogers said the district could explore the hiring of a professional consultant to explore a potential referendum. He said the park district has not had a referendum go before voters since 1972. Voters approved that referendum, he said. Rogers advised that if the park district board were to consider a referendum, it should consider asking voters for a

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage or defacement to property/ criminal damage to a vehicle/criminal trespass to property/criminal trespass to a vehicle/ damage to city property/ damage to property

Aug. 15 Police said that at around 8 a.m., a contractor arrived at a property in the 200 block of N. Maple and found the front door to the residence damaged and Enrique Villegas-Garcia, 44, of Chicago sleeping in the basement.

Police said Villegas-Garcia stated that he was on his bike when he got caught in the rain, noticed the realtor sign in front of the property and entered the residence. He was charged with criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to a residence.

Aug. 14 Police said that subsequent to a call for a possible fight at a hotel in the 900 block of S. Riverside at around 11:22 a.m., Darryl Foreman, 33, of Chicago, and an unnamed suspect were observed arguing in the hallway of the hotel and seen exiting the building a short time later. Upon checking the hotel room, damage was observed, according to police. Foreman and the suspect were located in the parking lot. Foreman was charged with felony criminal damage to property. The suspect was found to be in possession of a fictitious driver’s license and was released from the scene pending charges.

Aug. 9-Aug. 10 Police said a victim in the 100 block of Fellows came into the station and stated that an unknown suspect(s) keyed her 2004 Honda Pilot. The vehicle had deep scratch marks along the driver and passenger side rear panels and doors. There was also a deep scratch mark on the hood.

July 28-July 29 A victim in the 400 block of Parkview told police that an unknown suspect(s) keyed the rear right passenger door and front right fender of his 2012 BMW. Officer observed two “X” marks keyed deep into the metal. The victim is not sure where or when the damage occurred.

Criminal sexual assault

Aug. 12 Elmhurst Hospital reported that a criminal sexual assault victim had arrived at the emergency room at around 2:32 a.m. and left before an officer arrived. The victim did not wish to speak with law enforcement or have an investigation conducted. A nurse advised that the victim told her she and her friend were at a residence on St Charles Road in Elmhurst when the alleged assault occurred.

Disorderly conduct, disturbance, trespass notice

Aug. 12 Police said Elmhurst Public Library staff reported a suspicious person who had sworn at

CALL 800-222-TIPS the employees and made threats against them, but left the building. The library and Wilder Park were checked with no results. At around 5:30 p.m., a 911 call reported the suspect from the library was at Plunkett Park. The suspect was located; he stated that he had been at the library and was upset that the staff was watching him while another patron told him to be quiet. The suspect was given a no-trespass notice.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

Aug. 11 A 26-year-old Maywood man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 2 a.m. Police said the victim stated her boyfriend choked her and prevented her from calling 911. The victim had visible marks on her neck.

Aug. 10 A complainant near Roosevelt and Route 83 told police at around 6:51 p.m. that her boyfriend, the suspect, picked her up from work. She decided to drive because he had been drinking alcohol. They began to argue while driving and the suspect started pulling the phone jack from the auxiliary outlet and started to pull at the car keys in the ignition.

The complainant stated she was in fear of getting into an accident so she hit her boyfriend and grabbed his hair. She then pulled over on the ramp shoulder. Neither party wanted to sign complaints and an officer did not see any physical marks on either party.

DUI, illegal consumption or possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of open alcohol, illegal possession of open alcohol, possession of a controlled substance, delivery of a controlled substance

Aug. 16 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 Frontage and Riverside Drive at around 9:24 p.m., the driver was found to be driving while license suspended. Belinda McDonald, 35, and Elija Sproulls, 58, both of Chicago, were found to be in possession of open alcohol, according to police. Both were cited for illegal transportation of alcohol.

Aug. 15 Police said officers responded to a report of a male lying in the grass passed out. Andrew Christ Poehling, 46, of Villa Park, was located and found to be passed out with two empty beer cans next to him, according to po-

lice. Poehling was charged with possession of liquor on a public way.

Aug. 14 Police said officers responded to the report of a man slumped behind the wheel near Grand and Lake at around 11:33 p.m. Upon arrival, the vehicle of Jakub Tysko, 39, of Bensenville, was located with two flat tires, according to police. Police said Tysko was subsequently located walking home, admitted to driving the vehicle and was found to be DUI. He was charged with aggravated DUI. Aug. 13 • Marco Cano, 19, of Downers Grove, was cited for possession of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a roadside safety check near Church and Grand at around 12:57 a.m.

• Andrzej Lepicki, 44, of Elmhurst, was charged with aggravated DUI subsequent to a roadside safety check near Church and Grand at around 1:47 a.m.

Aug. 12 Mitchell Hovorka, 20, of Elmhurst, was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a suspicious person investigation in the 400 block of Hawthorne at around 11:29 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a dispatch for a report of a burglary in progress in the 200 block of S. Arlington at around 2:55 a.m., it was later learned that a verbal altercation took place during a party where all attendees were reportedly consuming alcohol under the legal age. Emmett McEnery, 18, of Elmhurst, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor and possession of alcohol by a minor.

Three juveniles, along with Mikhail D. Litvintsev, 20, of Aurora; Katelyn Tuma, 20, of Poplar Grove; and Tiffany Baker, 18, of Naperville, were each cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Aug. 11 Police said that while officers were on patrol at a store in the 900 block of Swain at around 10:43 p.m., they observed a female subject approach a vehicle and hand over what appeared to be a bottle of liquor to a female driver, who appeared to be under the age of 21. Officers followed the driver who pulled into a driveway on Swain, and upon making contact with the driver, Kayla Tooley, 20, of Elmhurst, Tooley admitted to being under 21 and obtaining alcohol from a friend, police said. According to police, she handed over a 750ml bottle of vodka. She was cited for possession of alcohol by a minor.

Aug. 10 Iris Gatewood, 33, of Naperville, was charged with DUI, transportation of open alcohol, possession of cannabis, disobeying a traffic control device, operating a vehicle when registration was suspended for mandatory insurance and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 2:47 a.m.

Aug. 16 While on patrol, a reporting officer observed a vehicle traveling southbound on York near Fullerton at a high rate of speed at around 1:54 a.m. The suspect attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but was unsuccessful.

Aug. 15 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Roosevelt at around 6:47 p.m., Suspect 1 was observed throwing a glass pipe out of the window of the vehicle. It was later learned the discarded pipe was a glass pipe used for ingesting crack cocaine. Suspect

2 admitted to being a drug user and possessed drug paraphernalia which was located in the vehicle. The suspects were taken into custody and later released without charges pending lab results.

Aug. 13 Tomasz Worek, 37, of Bensenville, was cited for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a roadside safety check near Church and Grand at around 2:10 a.m.

Aug. 12 Daniel J. Thilges, 29, of Melrose Park, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 3:34 p.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to a report of an unresponsive person in a parked vehicle, entry was made to the vehicle using a lock out tool, and the officer was able to wake Thilges. Observed was a cell phone with a white powdery substance on the surface, according to police.

Thilges admitted to using cocaine and after a search of the vehicle, suspected cocaine was found, police said.

Aug. 11 Zachary Moore, 19, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of cannabis, and Adam Vaneekeren, 19, of Elmhurst, was cited for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 200 block of Adelia at around 2:27 a.m.

Aug. 10 • Donald R. Coleman, 28, of Maywood, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 6:51 p.m. Police said that while assisting with a possible domestic incident, Coleman, who was not involved in the incident, stopped his vehicle because he recognized the two individuals that the police were speaking to. An officer approached the vehicle and smelled burnt cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. Police said the officer observed several empty bottles of alcohol in the front passenger area of the vehicle. After consent to search the vehicle was obtained, a small amount of cannabis was located, according to police.

• Kristian Zenejas, 19, of Des Plaines, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia in the 500 block of N. Indiana at around 2:25 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle, the reporting officer made contact with the occupants and smelled a strong odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. According to police, a search of the vehicle yielded a plastic bag containing a green plant material, suspected cannabis. Zendejas stated the cannabis belonged to him and was subsequently placed into custody, police said.

The victim related he had never been to their office and he was requested to file a police report.

Aug. 15 Police said a reporting officer responded to MB Financial Bank at around 4 p.m. for a report that an unnamed suspect was attempting to withdraw money from her deceased father’s account. The suspect provided false documentation in an attempt to gain access to the money. Further investigation is pending.

Aug. 12 The Lombard Police Department attempted a traffic stop where the vehicle fled east on Roosevelt at around 1:47 a.m. That vehicle matched the description of stolen auto in Wheaton, according to police. Elmhurst officers observed the vehicle driving at a high rate of speed eastbound on Roosevelt with no lights on. The vehicle was last seen going eastbound on I-290 from Roosevelt.

Aug. 11 • Roshelle McCormick, 51, of Wood Dale, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 7:45 p.m.

• Theft was reported in the 600 block of N. Michigan at around 9:14 p.m. A victim came to the Police Department and reported she dropped her son off at a swimming facility.

She left her son’s diaper bag with an employee who was working the front desk as she was leaving. When the victim returned at 6:40 pm. to pick up her son, she asked for the diaper bag.

The victim noticed the front pocket of the bag, which she kept closed, was opened and her son’s necklace was missing from the pocket.

Aug. 10 Attempted residential burglary was reported in the 400 block of Mitchell at around 8:53 a.m. Police said officers responded to a disturbance where the victim’s son was home alone and heard glass shattering.

Upon arrival, the front door window pane was shattered. Officers made entry and searched the residence with no results for any possible suspects.

In the driveway was an Allen wrench belonging to a neighbor. While investigating the incident, an evidence technician located the wrench and screwdriver on the driveway. The homeowner advised that her husband left for work in the morning and left

the overhead garage door open. She noticed their dog barking at around 8:45 this morning, but did not see anything suspicious. Her husband confirmed the items were removed from his tool bag in the garage.

Aug. 9 A victim in the 700 block of Hillside came into the Police Department and reported that an unknown suspect(s) withdrew cash from her bank account on the above date from from a branch in Kent, Wash., at around 5:54 p.m.

April 3-July 24 A victim in the 100 block of W. Butterfield came into the Police Department to report an unknown suspect attempted to purchase a vehicle at a dealership in Paris, Ky., on July 25, using his personal information. On Aug. 3, the victim noticed a charge on his credit card. He then

On Aug. 15, a victim in the 100 block of N. York told police at around 2:40 p.m. that he and his friends went into a toy shop, leaving their unlocked scooters near the front door. When the victim exited the store, his black scooter was gone.

After further investigation, the reporting officer discovered suspects moved the scooter approximately 20 feet and hid it in some planters.

All parents were contacted and came into the Police Department to pick up their children. The suspects will be recommended to the Peer Jury Program.

Aug. 16 Police said a reporting officer observed a vehicle driving on a rim and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle near York and Butterfield at around 1:59 a.m. According to police, Barry M. Hartmann, 63, of Elmhurst, was found to have an active Violation of an order warrant out of Pierce County, Wash.

In the case of an ankylosed deciduous (“baby”) tooth, extraction is likely necessary to make way for a permanent successor (if there is one) and prevent malocclusion.

An ankylosed permanent tooth need not necessarily be extracted unless the surrounding teeth start to move around the ankylosed tooth, causing malocclusion.

A way to determine if a tooth is ankylosed is by a visual exam. An ankylosed tooth will appear as if it’s not erupting or is sinking back into the gum tissue. A return to reality after vacation Ever noticed that returning from vacation creates a need for vacation?

First off, let me say that vacations are the best, or at least better than a regular day not on vacation. Whether it’s a long weekend or extended 14day excursion, I love a day on vacay.

The only thing better? Two days (and so on – to infinity and beyond).

Vacation is filled with un-tethered time. You wake in the morning free to wonder what sort of adventures and entertainment you should pursue today. Work and chores and stress and the electric bill are off the radar. It’s all about fun, fun, fun!

After your week away you return home and suddenly your time is tethered again – by responsibilities of normal life, which can put a damper on the sunniest of days.

Normal means setting the alarm clock. Making the bed. Brewing your

own coffee in the morning and cooking your own breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is clearing your own dishes and washing them. Normal is not as exciting as vacation. It’s more work and less free time.

This return to normalcy can leave one feeling empty – as in empty fridge and pantry. Chances are, you and the brood returned home hungry and food isn’t going to purchase and restock itself. It takes a human being to do that.

Too often that human is you. And the first thing anyone wants to do when

coming home from vacation is head right out to the supermarket.

But before you can grocery your way to a full meal and belly, there’s the pesky problem of a full laundry bin. Returning from a week at the beach or theme parks means one thing: dirty clothes. Who wants to take time during vacation to do laundry? They call it time off for a reason.

Time off from laundry.

Before you can do the laundry you have to unpack it. I wasn’t born with the unpacking gene. I could honestly go weeks without unpacking. Eventually the unopened suitcase becomes a regular part of the room landscape and you don’t even see it anymore.

It’s invisible to the naked eye.

I’ve learned ignoring a suitcase isn’t a good idea. The longer you wait to unpack after returning to home sweet home, the less sweet your laun-

dry pile will be – if you catch my drift.

Speaking of freshly laundered scent, I won’t even go into the overwhelming aroma that will abound if someone forgets to flush a toilet before departure. Flushing the toilet is an imperative task to complete prior to leaving for vacation, not upon returning from. I am fairly proud to report we are consistent flushers and as such haven’t encountered a problem in this area – so far.

What else piles up during a vacation? The mail. If you’re like me, you’ll come home to a hefty stack.

Hopefully more junk mail than bills.

Hopefully no bills marked overdue.

Hopefully maybe even a couple worth opening – like a check or credit card offer. (You are pre-approved!)

I haven’t even touched on work.

Not the work and chores you do at home, but the work someone pays

you to do. Even if you attempted to work ahead or complete projects before leaving on vacation, chances are something came up while you were gone and work will be waiting for you. Probably a pile even bigger than your laundry or unopened mail.

(Think of it as job security.)

And yes, you will have to go back to work. But that’s okay. Because work, while undeniably a four-letter word, is the very entity that makes vacations possible. And gives you time – during breaks and lunch and maybe office meetings – to plan for your next.

Governor Signs Senate Bill 3 A message from County Board Chair Dan Cronin I was proud to stand with Gov. Bruce Rauner and Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti at the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference on Aug. 14 as the governor signed Senate Bill 3 into law. Senate Bill 3 provides county leaders with important tools to bring Illinois’ legacy system of government into the 21st century.

This legislation allows local communities and their elected officials to make decisions about the size, scope and cost of their own local government. Most importantly, it will change the culture and foster innovation. And that’s, perhaps, the most exciting part of this accomplishment.

We all know Illinois has both the highest property taxes and the highest number of local government units

in the nation. I think most Illinois taxpayers realize these two facts are directly related. This bill addresses that very problem, giving local governments the ability to consolidate, when appropriate, and lessen the tax burden on our residents I am deeply grateful to Gov. Bruce Rauner for his leadership in this area.

Gov. Rauner highlighted the importance of government consolidation in his very first State of the State address.

Months later, he issued an executive order directing Lt. Gov. Sanguinetti to chair a statewide Task Force on Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandates, on which I was honored to serve.

How do we know this effort will have an impact? DuPage County has demonstrated that consolidation and collaboration can and do work.

Since the passage of Senate Bill 494

in 2013 – the original bill that gave DuPage County consolidation authority – we have consolidated four units of local government by working with residents to improve and enhance the delivery of services. We’re currently working on two more dissolutions. We’ve only done this where it makes sense and where real savings can be realized.

This process allows us to find efficiencies, pursue shared services and joint procurements to save taxpayers money. We’ve seen firsthand, the type of results and savings that can come from these efforts.

In addition to eliminating four units of government, our shared services initiatives and local government reforms have slashed more than $100 million in spending, all while keeping our portion of the property tax levy flat over the last decade.

I didn’t grow up gardening and we don’t have a veg garden now.

At our current condo abode, all we have are potted flowers and I love tending to them. I talk to them as I water or deadhead. I tell them how beautiful they are and how strong.

They like that.

At my first condo, we had a tiny strip of dirt next to the deck and we harvested the largest zucchini this side of the Mississippi or outside of the state fair or any children’s book.

That thing fed us and the whole neighborhood for weeks. (Perhaps I exaggerate, but it was BIG.) The fun of growing it was as large as its monster size.

It’s a worthwhile effort to garden, in whatever way you choose.

A few seeds in a Dixie cup is a wonderful exercise for kids to see that some things take time and a little attention pays off.

The discipline of watering (and chatting) creates a bounty of good memories.

Some authors wax poetic about gardening. Getting our hands in dirt is a way to relax and allow the stress of the outside world to melt away. Many people claim gardening to be their meditation or therapy. Abram L. Urban stated, “In my garden there is a large place for sentiment. My garden of flowers is also my garden of thoughts and dreams. The thoughts grow as free-

ly as the flowers, and the dreams are as beautiful.”

If gardening can get us back in touch with our thoughts and dreams, it is time well spent. Some say you can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt. George Bernard Shaw said, “The best place to seek God is in a garden. You can dig for him there.”

Hanna Rion wrote, “The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses.” Playing in the dirt causes us to slow down and can lower blood pressure.

The by-product of something to eat or beautiful flowers to enjoy is just a bonus.

When my sons were young, we once grew watermelon and pumpkins and tomatoes. I think my next place I will do the same. You can grow tomatoes on your front porch if you want. And feel free to share with your neighbors. Or me.

Gardening reconnects us with patience and with possibilities and the sweet subtle happiness of anticipation. When we get our hands dirty, we are pure. It’s not too late, no matter where you live or what season it is. Get a little pot and plant a little something. Notice how you feel.

You may end up like Cicero and state: If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.

History Museum announces September special events

Lebanese Festival showcases culture and cuisine Our Lady of Lebanon in Lombard will be holding their annual Lebanese Food Festival Friday-Sunday, Sept. 1-3, the annual event that is designed to spotlight the beauty and hospitality of Middle Eastern culture. Our Lady of Lebanon Church is located at 950 N. Grace Street in Lombard (behind the CVS). Admission: $5 donation; food is reasonably priced with families in mind. Festival hours are: Friday, Sept. 1, 5-11 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 2, 1-11 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 3, 1–7 p.m.

This three-day outdoor and indoor festival features: authentic Lebanese food made from old-world recipes; cultural beverages, including Lebanese beer, wine and coffee; around–the-clock entertainment and dancing, with famous Lebanese singers, live bands, DJs, belly dancers and performances by the Lebanese folklore dance troupe. Quarry tours offered on Sept. 30 On Saturday, Sept. 30, residents are invited to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility, a site generally closed to the public.

Tour participants will learn about the quarry’s history, visit various areas including private quarry platforms, and see how DuPage County Stormwater Management currently operates the facility to reduce flooding. Tours depart from Elmhurst History Museum via bus every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and last approximately two hours.

After the tour, participants may take a self-guided tour of the “By All Accounts: The Story of Elmhurst” exhibit to learn more about the quarry’s history.

Reservations required, ticket sales start Sep. 6 and can be purchased at elmhursthistory.org (Special Events section). Co-presented by DuPage County Stormwater Management and Elmhurst History Museum. UCP Seguin cuts ribbon at new community connections site Berkeley community shows support for innovative initiative

This past week UCP Seguin of Greater Chicago hosted an open house and ribbon-cutting to commemorate its new Rubloff Center for Employment and Life Skills Training in Berkeley. The building is one of five such bases of operations for UCP Seguin’s Community Connections initiative.

Community Connections is designed to provide a more innovative, community-integrated, person-centered service and support model increasingly desired by people with developmental disabilities and their families.

Through Community Connections, UCP Seguin offers its ground-breaking services to residents with disabilities from communities across the Greater Chicago area, including Berkeley and surrounding communities.

Several Village of Berkeley dignitaries were in attendance at the open house and ribbon-cutting, including Village President Robert E. Lee, Jr., Trustees Diane Salemi, Jerry Perez and Sherry Graf-Stone,

Village Administrator Rudy Espiritu, Assistant Fire Chief Pat McManus, Commander Tim Larem, and Executive Administrative Assistant Anita Arroyo. Recently the Village of Berkeley presented UCP Seguin with the Beautify Berkeley Business of the Month Award, recognizing UCP Seguin’s “commitment to maintaining a well-manicured business and curb appeal” associated with the new Rubloff Center.

Also present were representatives of other local organizations – the Berkeley Garden Club, the Oak Park-River Forest Food Pantry, the Elmhurst YMCA, the Hillside-Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, Proviso Township, Park Art Center, and others – with whom Community Connections partners to enrich the lives of people with disabilities.

As John Voit commented, “Berkeley and other area communities are to be commended for having leaders who share in UCP Seguin’s mission – life without limits for people with disabilities.”

A beautiful day enhances Special Kids Carnival

On Saturday, Aug. 19, the annual Special Kids Day Carnival was held on the site of the Jaycees Carnival, held over the past weekend.

A beautiful day brought out many families who enjoyed rides, treats and games without the glare of flashing lights and the loud noises that typically come with a carnival, creating a better environment for those with special needs and their families.

“The best thing about this is that it is for the whole family,” said Rich Rosenberg, founder of Special Kids Day, Inc., and the Special Kids Carnival. “It shouldn’t be about the disabled child, it’s about the entire family. That’s what the park in Butterfield is all about — it’s for the whole family so all the siblings can play together.

“No one has to go to a park or recreation area that is only geared for special needs kids, it’s a place where everyone can play.”

And play they did!

In addition to carnival games, there were games set up just for the event, games like ring toss, ball toss, a hula-hoop game and much more. Everyone was able to receive a prize, which was a choice of a dinosaur figure or a stuffed version of Billy Crystal’s character from Monsters Inc., a little green round fella

with arms and legs and one big eye.

A volunteer was on the sidelines blowing bubbles over the crowd that played the games and enjoyed snacks and bottled water provided by Special Kids Day, Inc. When the time came to wrap it up, no one wanted to leave.

Special Kids Day Inc. sponsors an annual Christmas party, usually at Wilder Mansion, and according to Rosenberg, they have been holding a Halloween Dance for ages 12 and older.

“That way, there are no little kids, it’s the more mature kids that like to dance and maybe even want to ask someone else to dance,” he said. “The kids love it, they dance in pairs, they dance in large groups, they dance by themselves, they don’t care, they just love it.”

Rosenberg told a sweet story about encouraging a young man with special needs to ask a girl sitting on the sidelines to dance with him.

“He finally got up the courage and approached, but he didn’t really say anything, he just gestured with his hand for her to join him on the dance floor, which she did,” he said. “Later her mother came up to me and said that was the first time she had ever been asked to dance by a boy. He was just one of many children and families to come out and enjoyed the beautiful weather as well as rides, games and attractions geared especially for them.

This young person wasn’t sure exactly what he thought of his face as he looked in the mirror after a volunteer painted him to look a cartoon character. He was one of many to choose a design from a book and then have it painted on.

Symphonic Orchestra to perform in Chicago World Music Festival Philharmonic to premiere composition honoring India’s independence Under the direction of Joanne May, assistant professor of music at Elmhurst College, the orchestra will perform the Bharath Symphony, which celebrates the 70th anniversary of India’s independence from Great Britain.

The symphony opens as a traditional Western symphony, paced with interludes in which soloists transport the listener to ancient India. Commissioned by the Indian government, the work was composed by Indian violinist Lakshminarayana Subramaniam, who also will perform as a soloist during the concert. Subramaniam’s wife, acclaimed Bollywood singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, is the vocal soloist.

“The music is like nothing ever

heard before – ancient Indian folk music layered over the sound of the traditional Western classical symphony and choir, sending the message that, whatever our cultural background, we can participate together in creating a common understanding through music,” May said.

GOP lawmakers: Time to deal with TIFs in school funding is now ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Tax Increment Finance (TIF) districts in Illinois hide property wealth from the state in the areas where they exist.

TIFs affect the formula for how much money the state will send to school districts under an evidence-based funding model, and some state lawmakers say it’s time to change that.

TIFs are so-called economic development tools local governments create that artificially freeze property values when the TIFs are created. Any tax revenue created from the actual increase in property value is used to incentivize development within the TIF district. That additional tax revenue does not go to traditional government functions such as schools. And the increased property values are, under the Democrats’ proposed evidenced-based education funding formula, hidden from the state when it determines which school districts are most in need of additional dollars.

“It doesn’t give a clear picture as to how much wealth is within a district when we start talking about the allocation of state money,” State Rep. Steven Reick (R-Woodstock) said during a committee hearing earlier this month.

“This is money coming out of districts that don’t have TIFs paying for ones

that do.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner says that’s unfair to districts that don’t hide their overall property wealth through TIFs. That’s why he said he amended Democrats’ plan to add TIF property wealth to the overall calculation when determining which districts are most in need.

School districts say they don’t control the creation of TIFs, but some have cut side deals with municipalities that create them to get some of the increment for the schools. Those side deals also are not accounted for when the state doles out dollars.

Last week during a House committee hearing, Taylorville School District Superintendent Greggory Fuerstenau said his district struck a deal with one town to share in some of the money, and there are talks to capture a share in other TIFs. “They’re talking about it,” Fuerstenau said. “They’re doing a study.

They’re moving forward with it. The school district’s been at the table having a conversation,” but it’s still being negotiated.

State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) said that type of negotiation isn’t addressed by the state, but should be accounted for “on what happens with

property that’s put in TIFs and how it’s evaluated for state support, because you have side deals that are going on.”

“Taylorville is getting some money out of their TIFs,” Ives said. “I believe Centralia said they’re getting nothing.”

Ives also noted that hundreds of millions of tax dollars are hidden from the state in Chicago’s TIFs each year, as well as about $90 million in TIF money that Chicago Public Schools receive annually in a deal CPS made several years ago with the city.

Ives said Rauner addressed TIF districts in his changes to the Democrats’ funding reform bill to make for a level playing field for districts across the state.

Democrats, however, say TIFs should be dealt with later. Republicans say TIFs should be dealt with now because taxpayers in areas that don’t hide their overall property wealth should not be forced to pay to supplement those who do.

The House was scheduled to be in session Wednesday, Aug. 23 to possibly take up an override motion to the governor’s change. It also could vote on a new bill that mirrors the Democrats’ original school funding reform measure.

Explore life on a dairy farm in the early 1900s at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s “St. James Farm Dairy Day,” a free, all-ages event on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To support their growing, awardwinning herd of Guernsey cows, the McCormicks built a state-of-theart dairy barn with roomy stalls and assorted outbuildings.

EEH system plans to reduce costs by $50 million over next year Mastro: Existing cost structures not sustainable; more efficiency needed

On Tuesday, Aug. 15, Mary Lou Mastro, System CEO for Edward-Elmhurst Health, held a news conference to discuss the company’s plan to reduce costs by $50 million over the next year.

“In order for Edward-Elmhurst Health to continue to be the strong, stable organization that it is today, we must carefully manage our financial situation,” said Mastro. “Hospitals recognize that our existing

cost structures are not sustainable. We must become more efficient and ensure that our expenses are well-managed.”

Reductions will include Mary Lou Mastro both labor and non-labor expenses and will represent approximately 4 percent of total expenses, according to Mastro.

It’s no surprise that hospitals across the country are facing many

kinds of financial pressure. Those that specifically challenge Edward-Elmhurst Health include: • The number of patients in both Medicare and Medicaid has increased. These government programs do not cover the costs of patient care.

• Insured patients do not always have the resources to pay their higher co-pays and deductibles, which has contributed to increasing bad debt.

• There has been an increase in charity care.

• The number of individuals with commercial insurance has declined.

Even for those who have it, com-

mercial payments typically do not keep up with medical inflation.

• Costs of pharmaceutical and medical supplies have increased dramatically.

According to a release issued following the press conference, Edward-Elmhurst Health remains firmly committed to a mission of

advancing the health of its communities.

“Changes in processes will be carefully designed to improve efficiencies, maintain and enhance the quality of care provided to patients, and assure that Edward-Elmhurst Health can continue to serve patients and families in the future,” it read.

County Stormwater Management, EHM to host quarry tours In partnership with the Elmhurst History Museum, DuPage County Stormwater Management will offer a rare opportunity to take a public tour of its Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility on Sept. 30.

Stormwater Management Committee Chairman Jim Zay said DuPage County residents will have the

opportunity to tour the quarry to learn how the County uses it to manage floodwater, along with its history in the community.

“The Elmhurst Quarry holds 2.7 billion gallons of stormwater and is by far the largest flood control facility of our 16 pump stations and reservoirs,” Zay said. “However, not only

is it one of our most important flood control facilities, it also has the most interesting history,” Zay said. “Because of its unique presence in the county, residents are always interested in visiting it, and this tour allows us to accommodate a large number of

“The data suggest that Illinois’ state and local tax subsidy policies favor municipalities that are majority white, have poverty rates below the state’s average, and median incomes above the state average,” Craighead said. “Instead of lifting disadvantage and undeserved communities, these policies appear to be expanding social and economic inequality.”

Using industry standard software, ILEPI compared the economic impact of the inflation-adjusted $288.5 million that Illinois taxpayers have annually spent on business tax subsidies since 2000, against comparable investments in infrastructure, education, and middle-class tax relief.

“When compared to the impact of other potential investments that state and local governments could be making, it is clear that Illinois’ current business tax subsidy policies have been an inefficient economic development tool, at best,” said Manzo.

“Alternatively, if Illinois had used the $288.5 million per year they are currently spending on business tax subsides to help balance public budgets, it could have potentially avoided credit rating downgrades that have already cost taxpayers and reduced investor confidence.”

ILEPI’s analysis includes a detailed set of proposed reforms to improve the success and accountability of tax incentive programs to corporations. The Institute suggests tying receipt of subsidies to more specific job creation goals and wage and benefit standards; more consistent and uniform enforcement of accountability measures; developing a comprehensive economic development strategy which would better focus on communities most in need; and, the reallocation of subsidy dollars into infrastructure or job training programs that improve overall economic competitiveness.

“As the state continues to grapple with over $251 billion in unfunded pension liabilities and $15 billion in overdue bills, effectively using taxpayers’ money is of the utmost importance,” Manzo said. “Ultimately, we believe it is in the state’s best interest to continually evaluate its subsidy practices and promote balanced policies.”

Team Elmhurst Soccer Club’s U13 boys and U17 girls travel to Barcelona The Team Elmhurst U13 boys and U17 girls soccer teams recently competed in the Copa Mediterraneo tournament in Blanes - Tordera close to Barcelona, Spain. The boys team played very well, making it to the quarter-finals against France. The girls team lost in the finals by a score of 2 to 1 after a great run. The U17 girls didn’t give up a single goal until the finals.

Off the field, both teams, along with their families, had the opportunity to visit Sagrada Familia, the sacred mountain of Montserrat, Camp Nou, the home of FC Barcelona, Blanes Beach - a town just north of Barcelona on the coast, and the city of Girona. Not only did they get an international soccer experience but they got to see Spanish culture at its finest.

”We all had a great time on the Barcelona Spain trip” said Karsten Roy, Director of Coaching for Team Elmhurst, “Not only playing against teams from other countries but the sightseeing parts of the trips have been great. Over the years we had a chance to play the Italy Cup in Cesenatico, Italy, the Donosti Cup in San Sebastian, Spain and most recently the Copa Mediterraeno tour-

nament near Barcelona. These are once in a lifetime trips for our players and families at TESC.” The U13 Boys and U17 girls represented the 4th & 5th teams who traveled to Europe with TESC, and third overall European tournament.

The players and families spent the last year fundraising to help make the trip possible. The teams sent out a special thanks to Lakeside Bank of

York boys golf team takes second at Addison Trail Invitational Dukes girls golf team victorious against Wheaton North

The York boys golf team showed that it meant business right off the bat at the recent Addison Trail Invitational.

The Dukes shot a 310 team score to take second in the competitive 20-team field at Joliet Country Club.

Sophomore Joshua LaBounty led the Dukes with a 1-over-par 73 from the blue tees. Matt Buckley, also a sophomore, was second for York with a 78. Junior Aidan Mann shot 79 and senior captain Jake Brown shot an 80. Jacob Wit shot 85 and Ryan Costello finished

with a 90.

Earlier, York opened the season by taking second out of 10 teams at the Elk Grove Invitational. The event is a varsity-sophomore scramble.

“It was a good team-building event for our players,” said York coach Jim Borel.

York heads into the 2017 season minus five graduated seniors from last year.

“We graduated five very strong seniors last year so we don’t have much varsity experience, but our underclassmen are excellent players,” said Borel. “Our senior leadership with Jake Brown and Ryan Costello will

make for a very successful season.”

Other team members include juniors Blair Faber and Casey O’Malley, sophomore Mason Lampa and freshman Sam Bartolone.

Borel noted LaBounty will be a key component of the team as a 10th grader.

“Joshua will be one of the top players in the area,” he said. “He works very hard on his game and has the talent to make a ton of birdies at any time. He’s a great kid.”

York girls golf The York girls golf team kicked off the season with a non-conference win against Wheaton North at Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

Haley Blattner was the meet medalist with a 44. Bella Bartolone, Mia Spedale and Allison Evans each shot 46, while Jenna Koeppen had a 48.

York’s varsity and JV also played a non-conference match against Maine South at Mission Hills with Maine South winning both contests.

At the varsity level, Katie Wegmann led the Dukes with a 43. Koeppen had a 47, while Bartolone had a 54. Annie Grasse shot 57.

In the JV contest, Cassie Sika shot 55. Jenna Hughes had a 58. Elle Borchardt finished with a 59 and Claudia Schreiber shot 62.

“These kids have been in the system,” he said. “This is my fourth year with these seniors. They understand it and they get it. It’s easy for them to do things and it’s easier because they know where we want them on the field and they know how to execute what we want to do.”

York is coming off a 2016 campaign where it went 2-7, but Monken’s current squad is filled with players who gained valuable varsity experience a year ago.

Back on the offensive side of the ball are seniors Grant Melion (running back, 5-11, 185), Joey Jaeger (fullback, 5-11, 210), TJ Juneman (tight end, 6-0, 205), Tommy Pirvu (offensive line, 6-2, 210), Ryan Blessing (offensive line, 6-1, 190) and Ben Bernard (offensive line, 6-4, 230).

Also back are senior Joey Chiappetta (wide receiver, 6-1, 170) and junior KeVon Robinson (running back, 6-0, 195).

Melion is a three-year starter for York, while Robinson started as a sophomore. York has a total of seven starters back on offense (Bernard, Blessing, Pirvu, Juneman, Jaeger, Melion and Robinson).

York has made a change at quarterback where senior David Leonard (59, 160) takes over the position.

“David worked hard in the off-season,” said Monken. “He beat out a couple other guys. David is doing a nice job for us.”

Leonard takes over for senior Charlie Pakenas (6-1, 170), who moves to the defensive secondary. “We needed some more speed on defense and he has the skills to play corner,” said Monken. “Charlie has taken to the cornerback position and is doing a nice job.”

Offensively, Monken said his squad will put a little more emphasis this season on the passing game.

“We made some strategic changes and are doing some things differently on offense,” he said. “We are going to focus more on throwing the ball.”

That’s not to say York is going to take its running game and throw it in the trash can. “We have three really good running backs that help us offensively in what we needed to do,” said Monken. “We’re still going to focus on running the ball and that’s something I think you have to do in our conference. There are a lot of good teams in the conference and these are the things you have to do to win games in the conference. And to get into the playoffs you have to win games in your conference.”

Back on defense for York are the likes of Zane Heemsoth (linebacker, 6-5, 210), Ben Melion (defensive line, 6-1, 235), Bo Thomas (linebacker, 5-11, 205), Trey Corriero (safety, 5-10, 165), Artie Renier (safety, 5-8, 150), Jack Wagner (defensive line, 5-8, 175), Clayton Davey (defensive line, 5-9, 225). Davey played offensive line last year.

An addition to the defense is senior linebacker Nic Bauer, an Elmhurst resident who formerly played at Nazareth Academy.

Heemsoth, Corriero, Davey, Kentra, Wagner and Ben Melion all started last season for York. Monken has been particularly pleased with the play of Heemsoth at linebacker.

“Zane started all nine games at linebacker last year as a sophomore,” he said. “He’s a really good player. He’s going to do a really nice job for us.

When you have a kid like Zane at linebacker, he’s going to take on that leadership role. Kids look to him.

He’s a guy who really knows this defense.”

Monken said quickness will be a key on defense for the Dukes this fall. “We will be faster on defense and, again, that’s something that will help in our conference,” he said. “You have to have speed on defense and you have to move and get to the ball.

We have kids in the secondary who have speed and can cover the pass.”

Monken likes the direction the football program at York is headed in . “We had a very good off-season that prepared us for this year,” he said. “We had a really good off-season with the weight-lifting program.

These kids have bought into the program and they are pushing themselves and setting goals and making goals. They have been together as a

group and did things that you hope to see in the off-season. We have a lot of multi-sport athletes here at York, which is great and those guys stayed committed to the weight room. We have a cohesive unit that continues to work hard and hopefully that translates onto the field.”

Monken knows his team will be in for battles throughout the West Suburban Conference Silver Division schedule.

“There are teams in our conference ranked in the top 20,” said Monken.

“That speaks volumes to our conference and to the coaches in our conference who are doing a great job preparing the kids. The other side of the conference is just as tough with Leyden and Willowbrook having great seasons. Hinsdale South is usually up there and Downers Grove South is usually right there. With our conference and the two conference crossover games, it’s a battle. We look at it as a positive. If we can play within our conference and win games and get into the playoffs, we feel we can play with anybody within the playoffs.

Our schedule prepares the kids. There is no letup. It’s a lot of fun. A lot of teams would love to play these highly ranked teams. We get the opportunity to do that almost every week.”

York opens the season Friday with a non-conference game against New Trier.

The Dukes, who went 2-7 a year ago, return plenty of experience on both sides of the ball. Grant Melion is a three-year starter at running back, while Zane Heemsoth, a junior, leads the defense out of his linebacker position.

New Trier, out of the Central Suburban Conference South Division, went 8-3 a year ago and won the conference with a 5-0 record. New Trier edged York in Week 1 last year in Elmhurst by a 14-10 count.

IC Catholic Prep boys golf team wins Leyden Eagle Invitational Leahy fires medalist-round 70; Schoonveld earns crystal at Glen Oak Invitational

The IC Catholic Prep boys golf team started the season off in fine fashion.

The Knights won the recent Leyden Eagle Invitational at Arlington Lakes Golf Course in Arlington Heights.

The field featured eight teams.

IC Catholic Prep finished with a 310, easily winning the team trophy by 24 shots over second-place Rolling Meadows.

Connon Leahy was the tournament medalist after shooting a 2-over-par 70. Charlie Schoonveld was third with a 76. Thomas Hilgart shot 80 and Michael Hoffman finished with an 84.

Hilgart and Hoffman both earned top-

10 medals.

“It was a nice opening event for us,” said Knights coach Don Sujack.

“Connon and Charlie both navigated their way quite well around a tricky course. This golf course requires a strategy for just about every hole.

Each of them only hit a handful of drivers and that’s not always the easiest thing to do. Thomas had a nice showing in his first varsity tournament and Michael Hoffman overcame a tough start to post a nice score.”

IC Catholic Prep also competed in the Glen Oak Invitational played at Glen Oak Country Club in Glen Ellyn. The Knights placed fifth out of 12 teams with a 339, leaving them behind Wheaton-Warrenville South,

St. Francis, Wheaton North and Glenbard East.

Schoonveld and Leahy each shot 79 to lead the way for the Knights.

Schoonveld was awarded the fifthplace crystal via a scorecard playoff.

Hoffman shot 89 and Kevin Cheng finished with a 92 at Glen Oak. “Glen Oak Country Club puts on the best high-school tournament in the state,” said Sujack. “We had a very strong field and the course was tournament-ready. The boys were treated to competitive amateur golf at the highest level. Connon and Charlie continue to show their abilities and while we have a lot of room for improvement, I’m quite pleased with our direction so early in the season.”

Timothy Christian girls tennis team features top talent

Trojans out to defend conference title

The Timothy Christian girls tennis team had an impressive 2016 conference run.

The Trojans won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title, sweeping all five positions in the tournament.

Trojans coach Keith Mills said his squad figures to be a strong favorite again in 2017 with Chicago Christian as a key foe with most of its starters returning. The Red Division has a new look with longtime Timothy rival Illiana Christian moving to the Blue Division and town neighbor IC Catholic Prep joining the Red Division.

Mills’ conference-favorite prediction stems from the experience he has returning. Junior Abygale Ahn is back after earning a top-8 finish in the Class A state tournament as a sophomore. Ahn will play first singles and first doubles. She went 5-2 at the state tournament and finished the season with a 28-4 record.

Freshman Cassandra Lee is new to the squad and will play both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Cary Bone will play No. 2 singles after having a solid season as the team’s No. 1 singles player on the JV team. Junior Aby Carstenson will play No. 2 doubles, while seniors Ellie Jarzombek and Jill Bury along with junior Gabby Silvia will play second and third doubles.

Mills noted Ahn and Lee will form quite the punch at the top of the lineup. “We have two top-level players in Abygale and Cassandra,” he said.

“Both could go undefeated in the regular season at first singles so the top of our lineup will be strong. We have several players battling for doubles spots so depth will be better than last year as well. Cassandra will get better each week. Having her in the lineup takes some pressure off Abygale to carry things. The two playing together will be interesting.

“We are blessed to have two top players (Ahn and Lee) at a small school such as Timothy. We likely will pair them together for the state tournament and they have a good chance of going a long way and even contend for a state championship. We also have the players to win at lower positions, but need to work hard the next few weeks.”

Mills also is high on Jarzombek and Carstenson, a transfer from Hinsdale Central who did not play at Hinsdale but has previously played the game.

“Ellie has played well so far. We need her to pick up wins at third doubles,” said Mills. “Aby is a great athlete who has a lot of potential.”

Mills feels that improved depth will make a difference, particularly during dual meets. “We’ll be strongest at first singles and doubles, much like last year,” he said. “When we lost last year, it usually was 3-2 with us losing at other positions. Third doubles I feel will be stronger this year.”

The Trojans are entered into four weekend tournaments where they primarily will see Class AA schools.

“We should be able to compete and hold our own against the big guys and that will help us in our dual meets down the road,” he said.

Mills also likes the group’s chemistry. “First off, the team has a very positive attitude and good chemistry between teammates,” he said.

Mills said the team’s goals are to win the conference title again, win a Class A sectional title and improve on the squad’s 11th-place state finish last year.

The Trojans opened the season earlier this week against IC Catholic Prep.

York girls tennis team filled with experience Dukes return seven starters from last year; 112 players in York program this fall

When one looks at the players that graduated from the York girls tennis team from a year ago, thoughts of a youth movement immediately surface.

York graduated the likes of Maja Shaw (two-time state qualifier, allstate third-team last year), Alex Hennessy (two-time state qualifier, all-state third-team last year), Julia Riddle (2015 state qualifier), Liz Mazzocco (18 wins last year), Cameron Elsey (17 wins last year), Mei Giuffre (14 wins last year) and Allison Stramel (14 wins last year).

But coach Tres Heimann’s 2017 team isn’t singing the youth blues.

The Dukes still return seven starters from that 2016 team that took fourth in the ultra-tough West Suburban Conference Silver Division and placed fourth in a Class AA sectional.

Back for York are sophomore Melissa Cartis (No. 1 singles in 2016, 18 wins), sophomore Cate Duhig (No. 2 singles in 2016, 20 wins), sophomore Aleksina Jovic (No. 3 doubles in 2016, 22 wins), junior Jacki Riek (No. 3 doubles in 2016, 19 wins, 34 career varsity wins), junior Eva Jacobsthal (No. 3 singles in 2016, 14 wins), senior Lauren Fonorow (No. 4 doubles in 2016, 18 wins, 35 career varsity wins), junior Isabella Nicoli

(No. 4 doubles in 2016, 19 wins), Jess Paist (No. 5 doubles in 2016, 15 wins, 28 career varsity wins), Cristina Gamboa (No. 5 doubles in 2016, 15 wins), Elysia Woodward (No. 6 doubles in 2016, 14 wins) and Olivia Brunke (No. 6 doubles in 2016, 12 wins, 24 career varsity wins).

Key newcomers to the team include freshman Gianna Nikoleit, sophomore Micki Neidigh (No. 1 doubles JV in 2016), sophomore Rachel Kayman (No. 1 singles JV in 2016), senior Wendy Zhang (No. 2 doubles JV in 2016) and senior Siva Sreedhar (No. 3 singles JV in 2016).

“We are very excited for this season,” said Heimann, whose team went 18-10 last year. “We have 112 players out for the team in the York girls tennis program. We are very excited to have 11 returners off last year’s team with seven starters. We will have a very deep team up and down the lineup card.”

Heimann, who needs three dual-meet wins to reach 300 for his career (boys and girls combined), said the program continues to receive an influx of freshmen tennis players.

“Forty-five freshmen came out in the program this fall, which we are very excited about,” said Heimann, in his 10th season as the girls’ head coach and 12th season overall in the program. “We have had three very good, deep freshmen classes in a

row. This bodes well for the future and there are many players who will contribute for the varsity.”

York will again compete in the WSC Silver that features no shortage of state powerhouses. “The West Suburban Silver Division always is loaded,” said Heimann. “Hinsdale Central is the four-time defending state champion. Lyons Township finished second in the state last year.

Glenbard West took fourth. Oak Park-River Forest has a top-caliber team each year. We look forward to competing with all these very good teams. It will prepare us for post-season play.”

York played in the Jacobs/Prairie Ridge 32-team invitational this past weekend. The Dukes also will compete in invitationals at Hinsdale South, Downers Grove South, Buffalo Grove, West Aurora and Lockport.

York also will host its annual quad with Lake Forest, Homewood-Flossmoor and Whitney Young on Sept.

16. The WSC Silver meet in October will be hosted by Lyons Township.

“As the IHSA moved to two classes for the second year in tennis, it will be more challenging in the 2A tournament,” Heimann explained.

“There will be great competition throughout the area and we will play a very competitive schedule. We still are looking at who will fill each of the singles spots and who will make up the doubles combinations. It’s still in the early going. It should be a very exciting season.”

New beginnings for IC Catholic Prep girls tennis team

The page has been turned to a new chapter for the IC Catholic Prep girls tennis team.

The Knights graduated Metro Suburban Conference champion Kelly Hodyl (now playing at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh) along with Autumn Gage and Deidre Lee. Hodyl was a three-time state qualifier.

“Kelly, Autumn and Deidre were major contributors to the program,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Julie Hurt.

But Hurt is far from sad when it comes to her 2017 team that has increased to 14 players.

“We have a full squad of 14 players, including a number of multisport athletes joining the program this year,” she said. “I am thrilled with our 2017 turnout.”

This year’s IC Catholic Prep captains are Caitlin Curtin and Hannah Wagner. Junior Suzy Maloney is back, along with seniors Alliah Colocado and Alexxa DeCarlo. Sophomore Cate Radoha and freshman Gia Gaudio also will see playing time.

Other newcomers to the team include IC Catholic Prep softball players Natalie Murillo (junior), Dani Murillo (sophomore), Brooklyn Campos (sophomore) and Madison Reaber (freshman).

“We have 14 players who can all step up and each will gain valuable playing experience this year,” said Hurt. “Their effort has been fantastic already and we are looking forward to the season starting.”

The Knights were scheduled to open play earlier this week against Timothy Christian.

IC Catholic Prep four-year three-sport athletes As a follow-up to last week’s item in the Independent about 2017 IC Catholic Prep graduates being honored for participating in three sports for all four years, here is some additional detail on those individuals who were recipients of the Iron Knight Award.

Charles Hipskind competed in football, wrestling and track for four years. Trey Morris competed in golf, basketball, bowling and baseball.

Tess Reardon played volleyball, basketball and soccer. Matt Sutton played football, basketball and baseball, while Robert Vitek played football, hockey and lacrosse.

Morris is now at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Reardon is attending Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. Sutton is attending the University of Michigan, while Vitek is attending the University of Illinois.

Also receiving the award was Elizabeth Maloney who is attending the University of Dayton.

Saturday, Sept. 30 Residents are invited to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility, a site generally closed to the public.

Tour participants will learn about the quarry’s history, visit vari-

ous areas including private quarry platforms, and see how DuPage County Stormwater Management currently operates the facility to reduce flooding. Tours depart from Elmhurst History Museum via bus every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and last approximately two hours. In 1892, Arthur F. Ahlgrim established the Ahlgrim Undertaking Parlor in Chicago. At that time, he had no idea he was starting a family tradition that would span four generations. Arthur’s son, Walter, joined the firm in 1925 after graduating from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. After establishing themselves in Chicago during the first half of the century, they expanded in 1956, landing at the corner of Spring Road and Vallette Street in Elmhurst.

In 1957, Arthur’s grandsons, Arthur, Robert, and Roger, all received their funeral director’s licenses and became active in the family business. With service dating back over a century, Arthur F. Ahlgrim, together with his son Walter, and grandsons, made it their mission to offer caring and personal service to all who they served. Today, Scott Ahlgrim, a son of Arthur and a fourth generation funeral director, has made it his goal to carry out that commitment to excellence that was started so long ago.

As owner and director of Ahlgrim Funeral Home, lifelong Elmhurst resident Scott Ahlgrim has prided himself in service to his community.

As a graduate of York Community High School, Augustana College, Worsham College of Mortuary Science and a fourth generation Funeral Director, Scott is not only knowledgeable regarding the funeral industry, but he knows his community as well. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Elmhurst, the Spring Road Business Association and has served on the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. In addition to business organizations, Scott also serves on the Board of the Elmhurst Walk-in Assistance Network and is active at Elmhurst’s St. Peter’s United Church of Christ.

If you own, run or work for any of the approximately 23 million smallto mid-sized businesses in America, chances are, you want more sales.

So, how do you make it happen? By showing customers you care. In this world of impersonal interactions and instant communication, there’s enormous value and differentiation in creating empathy for the customer’s situation.

By Diane Emo Sales training often piles on facts, CONTRIBUTOR figures and details that can turn a salesperson’s brain into a mish-mash of disconnected information with no context. So, keep it simple.

Train salespeople to be empathetic, consultative professionals by building on the things they already know. They know how they expect to be treated as customers – because we are all customers, right?

They know how they feel when people treat them unfairly or push them into a decision. They know when someone is really listening to them, not pretending. So, start with a customer context as a way to build your story.

Here is a three-step path toward building customer empathy in your sales teams.

1. Listen for emotion to find customer pain points: An interesting thing happens when salespeople ask questions – customers talk. What’s going on here?

How long has that been going on? What have you tried so far to fix it? Here’s the secret – listen for emotion in their words – disappointed, frustrated, angry, tried repeatedly, no response. Then, repeat the customer’s exact words to confirm their pain point. “It sounds like you’re pretty frustrated...” Pain points are the issues or problems that are significant enough for the customer to make a change – and buy from you instead.

2. Teach a simple consulting model for valuebased conversations focused on the customer’s pain points. I write three columns on the whiteboard labeled “What I heard (pain point),” “What we will do (solution),” and “That will help you (value).” Then, I ask the rep to give me one of her customer’s pain points.

For example, “What I heard is that the odor in your restroom continues to be a problem, even though you’ve asked your service to fix it. What we will do is use a disinfectant that kills the germs causing the odor. That will help you have a restroom that consistently smells good for your customers and employees.”

3. Feel, felt, found is still a good formula for moving people from objections to closed deals.

When a customer states an objection, try this.

Say something like, “I understand how you feel.” This lets customers know you heard them express their feelings, can relate, and understand why they feel the way they do. The customer feels validated instead of ignored.

How mobile technology is helping small businesses and their employees (StatePoint) If you run a small business, you know that there is almost always work to be done. However, much of your time may be spent on tasks that you didn’t foresee before you opened shop.

Indeed, up to 25 percent of a business owner’s time can be consumed by human resources and benefits administration, according to the Small Business Administration.

Luckily for those who built a business to follow their passions, not to do paperwork, new mobile technology can help save employers’ time, make employees’ lives easier and attract great staff.

For example, when Michael Kerins, founder of Robust Wealth, a New Jersey-based provider of financial management software and services, began offering health benefits to his staff, he didn’t anticipate the amount of time required to process paperwork and answer questions from employees.

“Too much of my time was tied up filling out paperwork, updating records and helping

employees find information,” says Kerins, who switched to using Zenefits, an online, allin-one platform that includes HR, benefits administration and payroll.

One benefit Kerins quickly realized was time-savings, as

employees had access to all of their HR and benefits information in one place -- online and through mobile apps.

“Employees can now fill out their own paperwork online, upload necessary documents, and make their own updates

when things change. It makes onboarding and benefits administration ridiculously easy and paperless. I never see the forms, but I can see when they have been completed,” says Kerins. He also quickly noticed that his employees

appreciate more control over their personal information and the ability to access all of their HR and benefits information in one place, including through their mobile phones.

According to Jim Lundy, principal analyst with Aragon Research, using mobile technology to run a business is not just a convenience, it’s becoming something of a necessity.

“Mobile is now critical in the workplace, as this is how the younger generations expect to work,” Lundy says, “Companies need to adapt or risk missing out on key talent.”

Other mobile apps offer employers and their staff opportunities to streamline project management, email marketing campaigns and more.

“Mobile apps should not only help people access information, but allow them to take actions and move things forward,” Lundy added. “Over the next few years, we predict mobile devices will become the primary computing device for a significant percentage of workers.”

What to do to stop unwanted phone calls (StatePoint) Whether you use a landline, mobile phone or both, you’ve likely received those pesky robocalls -- phone calls that use a computerized autodialer to deliver a pre-recorded message. As a consumer, here is what to know about this common annoyance to your home or personal line.

• Robocalls are often illegal. However, keep in mind that some robocalls are permitted, such as companies you have done business with under certain circumstances, medical appointment confirmations and school closing calls. Political and charitable calls are among others that also may be allowed, along with banks and telephone companies, provided those companies make the calls themselves. Remember, many robocalls illegally disguise, or ‘spoof,’ their Caller ID information or violate other rules.

• Never respond to a robocall. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends that if you receive a robocall, simply hang up. They also warn consumers not to press any number to speak to a live operator or to unsubscribe from the list, as this will tell the robocaller that it’s reached a live number.

While a student at York High School, Dr. DeVries was inspired by his Biology teacher, Brenda Dorsey, to become a veterinarian. Today he gives back to his alma mater by mentoring students through the Medical Careers program at York High School. This program is a partnership that allows seniors an opportunity to get up close and experience the career of a veterinarian.
