Local resident sworn in as Illinois State Representative County native continues tradition of women serving 47th District

Surrounded by family, friends and colleagues, Deanne Mazzochi of Elmhurst was sworn into office Tuesday, July 24, as the new State Representative for Illinois’ 47th Legislative House District. She took her oath of office outside of Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College, a few miles from where she was raised in Villa Park and six blocks from her Elmhurst home.

Her Boston University undergraduate degree was in Political Science and Chemistry (Biology minor); her Juris Doctor degree was with honors from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She has a passion for science and commonly brings her scientific knowledge and analytical skills to her private sector work. She will also bring that expertise to Springfield.

Elmhurst Garden Club receives national recognition Four of eight Elmhurst Garden Club projects presented at the Garden Clubs of Illinois Convention qualified for national recognition at the National Gardens Clubs, Inc. (NGC) Convention held in Philadelphia earlier this summer. NGC comprises 50 state garden clubs, 5,000 member garden clubs, 165,000 members, and 60 national-affiliated organizations within the US. There are also 330 international groups, including Canada, Mexico, South America, Bermuda, South Africa, Australia, Japan and others.

EGC received three first place awards and one recognition award at the NGC Convention. These awards are: First Place: Community Gardens This award reflects a year-and-a-half commitment to the Monarch Initiative as part of Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley’s Monarch Pledge of the National Wildlife Federation. As part of this pledge, Elmhurst Garden Club hosted the Children’s Monarch Fest in July 2017 in conjunction with the EGC Garden Walk & Faire.

First Place: Community Beautification This award acknowledges member involvement (Nor-

ma Farrell, Chair; Jan Foster and Lisa Peterson) as gardening consultants to York Community High School.

These individuals provided grant writing, garden design and horticultural education for York High School Garden Club, and spearheaded the transformation of three neglected areas at the school into three vibrant gardening spaces. These spaces are visually attractive and well-utilized by students.

First Place: Butterfly Sustentation This project documents the transformation of the Exterior Courtyard of York Community High School into a Monarch Waystation and demonstration garden. In addition to being a certified Monarch Waystation, this area has designations from Conservation at Home, Xerces Society and the National Wildlife Federation. Elmhurst Garden Club members remain committed to consulting with the York Garden Club.

The final award was recognition for the 2017 EGC’s Monarch Initiative window display in the Elmhurst Public Library.

Rev. Victor L. Brandt, 97 Rev. Victor L. Brandt, of Elmhurst, formerly of Palos Heights and Willowbrook, died on July 17, 2018, at the age of 97. Beloved husband of the late Irene for 67 years; loving father of Rev. James (Kathryn Fuger) Brandt, Deborah (Matthew) DeCino, Ruth (Michael) Bash and John (Andrea) Brandt; grandfather of Rev. Matthias (Valerie), Jesse (Mary), Micah, Rachel, Claire, T.J., Don and Sierra; great grandfather of Gabriel and Bjorn; dear son of the late Rev. John and Emma (Matthias) Brandt; brother of Leota (Arthur) Stapel, Velma (Rev. Melvin) Schmidt, and the late Rev. Arlan (Delores) Brandt; uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Victor was ordained to the ministry of the Lutheran Church in 1944.

After serving congregations in Bessemer Mich., Baltimore Md., and Buffalo NY, he served as pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Palos Heights from 1960 until his retirement in 1986. In 1976 Pastor Brandt led Good Shepherd out of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod after that church body’s conservative turn. He was elected Bishop of the English Synod of the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in 1985 and was active in the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988, serving on the three-person Constitution Task Force. The ELCA is the largest Lutheran body in North America. Dedicated to the Gospel and known as a wise and gentle shepherd, Pastor Brandt was loved by many in his congregations and in the wider church.

Pastor Brandt and Irene loved to travel and led groups on more than 20 international trips. The family mourns his loss and knows he remains in the hands of our gracious God. Memorial Visitation will be held at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567

This group of constituents, elected officials and dignitaries from all levels of state and county government turned out at Elmhurst College to witness the swearing-in of Deanne Mazzochi to the office of State Representative representing the 47th District. She was appointed to the position to replace State Rep. Patti Bellock, who is leaving to accept another position. Mazzochi grew up in Villa Park and currently lives with her family in Elmhurst.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery

July 25 Police said officers responded to the report of a battery in the 900 block of Weigel Drive at around 11:28 a.m. Subsequent to an argument, a victim told police that the suspect reportedly grabbed him and pushed his head into the wall.

The suspect told police the victim pushed him.

Both parties did not wish to sign complaints.

CALL 800-222-TIPS ship. Due to conflicting stories, no complaints were signed.

July 21 A 24-year-old Elmhurst resident was charged with domestic battery in the 700 block of Adell at around 9:08 a.m. Police said responding officers observed a small laceration on the victim.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespass to property, DUI, illegal transportation vandalism of alcohol, open alcohol July 19 Police said that subsequent to a call for a in public, consumption of road rage incident near Berteau and North at alcohol by a minor around 4:49 p.m., a victim told police that a suspect was tailgating him as he was driving in the area. The victim said he then pulled into his driveway and the suspect came up to the passenger side of the vehicle and began striking it with an unknown object. Neither party wished to sign complaints.

Disorderly conduct

July 20 Shante Dansby, 21, of Elmhurst, and Nyasja Brown, 19, of Berkeley, were charged with disorderly conduct-fighting in public in the 400 block of N. Addison at around 8:05 p.m.

Police said the two females were seen verbally arguing and then fighting on the ground.

July 19 Police said that subsequent to a call for an intoxicated subject in the 500 block of W. North at around 7:48 p.m., Vadym Hladchvk, 32, of Chicago, was located in the parking lot of a liquor store and was found to be highly intoxicated. Hladchvk was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance

July 26 Darren Thomas, 35, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, suspended registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Butterfield at around 2:14 a.m.

July 22 Police said Paul H. Fullerton, 32, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for public intoxication in the 400 block of S. Spring at around 1:44 a.m. Police said that while an officer was on patrol, the officer observed Fullerton stumble and fall on the sidewalk. According to police, Fullerton appeared heavily intoxicated, had slurred speech, had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and was unable to care for himself.

July 21 Santos O. Carrillo, 19, of Addison, was charged with DUI drugs, driving while license suspended and no insurance, while Carrillo Funes, 21 of Addison, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 12:01 a.m.

Harassment, threats

July 25 A victim in the area of Wilson Street told police at around 7:14 p.m. that her ex-boyfriend continues to call despite being asked to stop. An officer contacted the suspect and he understands he is not to call the victim anymore or he may be subject to arrest.

July 23 A victim in the 300 block of S. Sunnyside told police at around 4:45 p.m. that while at a doctor’s appointment with the suspect, the suspect made statements to the doctor which were not true. After returning home, a verbal argument began between the two, and the suspect reportedly struck the victim. There were no visible injuries on the victim. The suspect denied making the statements and admitted to having a verbal argument, but stated she did not strike the victim. Due to conflicting stories and no injuries, there were no complaints signed. Both parties were separated for the night.

July 20-July 22 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Fremont told police at around 6:04 a.m. that he is the landlord and rents a residential property to the suspect and his wife. On July 20, the suspect reportedly threatened the complainant with physical harm if he were to return to the property unannounced. An investigation is pending.

July 22 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill told police at around 10:57 p.m. that she was involved in an argument with a suspect, who grabbed her arm and took her cell phone from her. The suspect told police he did take her phone, but only grabbed her arm so she would listen to him and discuss their relation-

June 1-July 17 Police said officers responded for the report of harassment. A victim told police that over the past several months the suspects had been harassing her. The suspects would drive by, scream vulgarities and display their middle fingers at the victim. An investigation is pending.

July 23 Jeremiah Hogans, 22, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and no tail lights when required subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and York at around 8:50 p.m.

July 22 Tatiana Flores, 29, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, DUI, improper lane usage, following too closely and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Roosevelt at around 3:15 a.m. Police said Flores was found to be in custody of a hydrocodone pill.

July 20 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Church and Kenilworth at around 12:41 p.m., a search of the vehicle yielded a spoon with white powder residue and a small baggie of white powder residue. Luciano Ramos, 39, of Villa Park, was charged with aggravated driving while license revoked and no seat belt.

Additional charges are pending lab results.

Suspicious circumstances

A witness told police at around 9:07 a.m. that they observed three suspects—each described as either a white or Hispanic male— possibly tampering with several trucks parked in the North Avenue-Route 83 Plaza lot. The witness heard objects falling to the ground and observed the suspects fleeing the area. An officer later inspected the lying on the ground.

The trucks were secure. The officer will attempt to contact the company to determine if any items are missing from the vehicles.

July 21 A complainant told police at around 7:32 p.m. that she located a 2-year-old child attempting to cross lanes of traffic on Grand Avenue. A reporting officer spoke to the child’s grandmother who told police she went to the back yard for a few minutes to start the grill, and when she returned, she was unable to locate the child, who was safely returned home.

The reporting officer contacted the Department of Children and Family Services to inform them of the incident.

Police said officers responded to a report of a vehicle taken without permission. A complainant related that her daughter took her rental vehicle without permission. The daughter arrived home and spoke with officers; she related she does not have a driver’s license, only a permit, and knew she was out past curfew. The complainant wanted to file complaints. The daughter was issued citations for no valid driver’s license and a curfew violation, and charges for the vehicle are pending further investigation. She was released to a family member.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

July 23 Samia N. Hooper, 29, of Lombard, was charged with identity theft, unlawful use of a weapon, improper passing on the shoulder and

no insurance near Monterey and St. Charles at 5:05 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Hooper was found to be in possession of a stun gun and a fraudulent Social Security card.

Theft of mislaid property was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 4:53 p.m. A victim told police she picked up and paid for her prescription and continued shopping for groceries. While paying for her groceries, she set her prescription down at the checkout area, and left the store without it. Video surveillance shows a man pay for his groceries, pick up the prescription bag, and leave the store. The suspect is described as a white male, with dark shoulder-length hair, with a beard and last seen wearing a red baseball cap, a long-sleeved red shirt and black shorts.

July 20-July 23 A victim in the 300 block of S. West told police that she applied for a cash loan via the Internet. She later spoke to a company representative via telephone and was instructed to buy Google Play cards and supply the security code information to the caller. The victim complied with the instructions. The victim was told a loan would be deposited in her bank account.

When the loan never materialized the victim realized she had been defrauded.

July 22 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of W. Montrose at around 3:45 p.m. A victim told police that while checking her bank account, she observed a digital image of a fraudulent check written. The victim contacted her bank and closed the account.

July 6-July 22 Residential burglary was reported in the 300 block of N. Highland between the above dates.

Victims told police that upon returning home from vacation, they found the front door to their residence forced open and the dead bolt drilled out. One of the victims is missing cash.

The victims suspect their adult son is involved in the burglary as neighbors observed him holding a party at the house during his parents’ absence.

July 20 Identity theft was reported in the 800 block of N. Willow at around 1:49 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect made fraudulent purchases on her credit card. The victim cancelled her credit card and will not be responsible for the fraudulent charges.

July 19 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 10:55 p.m. A complainant told police that a suspect left the store with a shopping cart filled with items for which he did not pay. An employee confronted the suspect in the parking lot. The suspect reportedly took several bottles of alcohol out of the shopping cart, placed them in his vehicle and left the area. Officers checked the suspect’s address with no results. There was an approximate loss of $56.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of N. Willow at around 1:12 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed her yellow garden hose and nozzle from her yard.

July 12-July 14 A victim in the 800 block of S. Parkside told police at around 4:47 p.m. that an unknown suspect(s) entered their unlocked vehicle and removed a black diaper bag containing the victim’s wallet, her Illinois driver’s license, two credit cards and cash. The driver’s license was entered into LEADS.

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on July 23 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. Commissioner Mary Kies was absent from the meeting.

There were no public comments.

Crestview Park fencing project approved for $24,000 The board voted unanimously to approve the meeting’s consent agenda, which included the awarding of the 2018 Crestview Park Fencing Project to Pro Fence II of Wheeling in the amount of $24,500. Pro Fence II was one of two firms to submit a bid for the project. It submitted the lowest responsible bid. The scope of the project includes removing and replacing the existing chain link fence at the sled hill at Crestview Park. The fence will be replaced with chain link fence and cedar split rail fence. The new chain link fence will be placed on the top and at the sides of the sled hill. The cedar split rail fence will be located along the bottom of the sled hill.

Potential dog park considered The meeting included a presentation of concept plans for a potential dog park that would be developed on the property at 0S761 Old York Road. The park district’s Vision 2020 Community Needs Assessment survey identified an off-leash dog park as a high outdoor facility priority. In June, the board approved the hiring of Upland Design to provide design concepts for developing a dog park at 0S761 Old York Road. Upland Design and district staff gained community feedback about the potential dog park at recent open house events.

Nearly 50 people attended a July 12 open house at The Abbey to discuss the potential dog park and exchange ideas with the design firm and the district. Michelle Kelly, Upland Design’s principal landscape architect, presented three concept plans for the potential dog park during the meeting. Kelly is scheduled to present a master plan to the park board at its Aug. 13 meeting.

Kelly noted that two buildings at the potential dog park site are in poor condition and need to come down. Some dead trees and invasive species also need to be removed from the site. The potential dog park would reportedly be surrounded by 6-foot-high fencing.

One concept featured 30 parking stalls, plus two handicap-accessible stalls. Another concept featured 14 regular parking spaces and one handicap-accessible stall, with the potential to double the amount of spaces. Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers noted that the site is located in unincorporated Elmhurst, and that no Elmhurst residents would likely walk to the site if it’s developed as a dog park. He said the district has to be mindful of parking in the area. He said that if there is

on-street parking at the site, it should be located on Old York Road.

Eldridge playground surfacing project awarded for $32,000 The board voted unanimously to award the Eldridge Park West Playground Surfacing Project to Perfect Turf, LLC, of Wood Dale, in the amount of about $32,000. The project, which should be completed by the end of August, includes the removal of the existing rubber surfacing, which was damaged by roots from a tree. That tree has been removed.

The rubber surfacing will be replaced by synthetic turf and foam padding. Perfect Turf, LLC was the only firm to submit a bid for the project. The company completed the surfacing for the playground at Plunkett Park last year.

Waste Management contract extended three years for $45,000 The board also voted unanimously to award the waste removal and recycling services for 2019-21 to Waste Management for a three-year total of nearly $45,000. The contract calls for the collection and removal of waste and recycling materials from dumpsters at approximately 12 park locations throughout the district. Waste Management has handled the district’s waste removal and recycling services since 2012. Waste Management’s current contract with the district expires at the end of 2018. The firm submitted the lowest of three bids for the contract.

Purchase of two vehicles approved Board members voted unanimously to approve the purchase of two vehicles through the Suburban Purchasing Cooperative for a total of nearly $80,000. One of the new vehicles, a Ford F-250 Super Cab 4x4, costs about $48,000. It will replace a 2002 pickup truck that will be removed from the district’s fleet. The other new vehicle is a Ford Transit full-size cargo van that costs over $30,000. That vehicle will replace a 2006 van that will also be removed from the fleet.

Board approves easement with townhome-owners association The board voted unanimously to approve an agreement for the Salt Creek Greenway Trail connection with the Astoria Place Townhome Owners Association. The district will pay the association $3,300 for a two-year temporary easement, plus a one-time payment of $10,000 to fund a vegetative landscape buffer.

The district has been attempting to reach an agreement with the association for nearly 20 years. A temporary easement is needed to complete the proposed Salt Creek Greenway Trail Connection south of Butterfield Road. The district is working with an engineering firm to design a 360-foot long by 8-foot wide asphalt trail connection. A temporary construction easement with the association is needed to complete the connection. The new asphalt connection will eliminate a hazardous situation

for bicyclists. The current alignment requires bicyclists to ride toward oncoming traffic on the shoulder of Brush Hill Road.

What’s in a name?

It’s one of the first things new parents do after counting to make sure there are 10 fingers and 10 toes. They name the baby. Names are chosen carefully and with great attention to detail. What sort of mean nicknames could kids in the schoolyard find to taunt little Dicky with?

Will a weird spelling haunt a kid for life? Does the name of choice rhyme with any swear words? Do initials spell out anything with negative connotations? Will the name make a smooth transition from childhood to adult life?

So much to contemplate.

I’ve been doing all of the above – not for a baby, per se, but for myself.

I’m on the cusp of acquiring an additional name – one I’ve spent a lifetime preparing for. And by golly I’ve earned it. It’s the one the new baby in my life will call me and it calls for considerable consideration.

Grandma is the obvious choice, but according to Google research, Grandma is just one of many grand choices. Not every grandma has to answer to grandma. And many modern grannies are utilizing creativity and uniqueness to bump their monikers up a notch.

None of this is new. Grandmas have been anything but grandma since the invention of the species. I had a neighbor once who insisted her grandkids call her Sylvia. That would be really unique and funny if her name were Mary, but it was Sylvia, so it wasn’t overly remarkable.

Point is, she didn’t want others seeing her as a grandma. Maybe she felt she was too young for that, or maybe she didn’t want anyone to know she was old enough to have a grandchild. It matters not. She was Sylvia to them.

home from the hospital, my mom fell and broke her hip.

Her recovery was gradual and for years she had trouble walking. We explained to our toddler daughter that grandma had an “owie on her hip” – and from then on she was no longer grandma, but “owie on the hip.” The name was adopted by each of our subsequent kids and for the rest of her days my mom gladly answered to the name “owie on the hip” or sometimes just “owie.”

Grandmas are called different names in different countries. A babushka in Russia is akin to a mormor in the Scandinavian countries. In Spain and Mexico she goes by abuela; in Japan o baachan; in France grand-mere; in Germany oma. All are good, but I’ve no need to be bilingual in my grandmotherly status.

Here in the U.S. a few different ones are common. In addition to grandma, you’ve got granny, gran and nana.

If you wanted to go the formal route you could opt for grandmother. One I found clever and sweet was a woman whose husband, as grandpa, was called simply “pop.” She asked to be called “lolly” and together they made a lollypop. If that doesn’t make you go “Awww” I’m not sure what will.

As for me, I’ll come when called, no matter what she calls me. But, I have decided on a preference – if it works out. I sort of like grammy, for a silly and simple reason: it sounds like an award and I’ve always wanted to win an award.

And my new little granddaughter is the best award this grammy could ever get.

Congressman Raja’s Education Bill passes House Offers training in cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, healthcare

On Wednesday, July 25, the House passed H.R. 2353, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. This legislation, led by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Congressman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (R-PA), has now passed both the House and Senate unanimously and will be sent to the President for signature into law.

This legislation reauthorizes and modernizes the American career, technical, and vocational education system for the first time since 2006.

There are currently 6.5 million unfilled jobs in the United States because employers simply cannot find workers with the applicable skills for the job. This bill will

Reader recalls roller skating memories

I was excited to learn of the new roller skating exhibition, Chicago Rink Rats: The Golden Age of Roller Skating at the Elmhurst History Museum and related activities. Many years ago, when I was a teenager I became interested in roller skating.

While skating at Spotlite 66 in LaGrange, I met Bill and Lynn Fuchs who were owners of the Elm Skating Rink which they built shortly after our meeting. I was the first member of the skating club and skated on the rink floor before it was open. Later

on, I took class skate dance lessons and some private free style (figure skating) lessons at that rink.

I skated there regularly and learned to do skate dances, various moves such as mohawks (2-foot turns), three turns (one-foot turns) and jumps (1 revolution)—the Lutz was my favorite jump. I also learned to do upright and sit spins. It was a lot of fun; I had many friends there.

I enjoyed watching the really good skaters who could do the advanced dances smoothly or did multiple rev-

olution jumps, and many types of spins. They skated much better than I ever would, and I admired them for that.

When I went to college and then was working I did not skate much.

However, several years later I returned to skate regularly at the Elm; that is where I met my husband. I am thankful for all the good memories of skating, the many friends I made, and it was a great way to get exercise while having fun.

It will require educators to work with local businesses to design training programs for the in-demand skills needed today.

Nybo: DuPage initiative to streamline elections signed into law

Fulfilling a localized effort started

by State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) back in 2015, the Governor has finally signed his sponsored legislation to dissolve the DuPage County Election Commission for more streamlined and cost-effective elections.

“Despite nearly all of Illinois operating elections through the County Clerk’s office, DuPage County is one of the only counties that uses an election commission,” said Nybo.

“With this consolidation, DuPage County will be able to administer elections cost-effectively and better mitigate any possible errors in the election process. This initiative is long overdue and truly in the best interest of the County and its residents—and we will see immediate benefits.”

House Bill 5123, a longtime

priority of Nybo’s, eliminates the current DuPage County Election Commission and replaces it with one that falls under the County Clerk.

Nybo first initiated a proposal for this consolidation in 2015 when he submitted DuPage County’s duplicative election body for immediate review to the Local Government and Unfunded Mandate Task Force.

Nybo also says that with the incorporation of online and automatic voter registration, expansion of early voting, access to absentee ballots, and the reduction in the number of polling locations across the county (which DuPage County decreased from 700 plus to fewer than 300 locations), there is less need for full-time and year-round election personnel.

Hospital finishes 3rd in ‘Most Beautiful’ contest For the seventh year in a row, Elmhurst Hospital is one of Soliant’s Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals in the U.S. With 26,975 votes, Elmhurst Hospital finished third in the 2018 contest. Soliant is a leading specialty healthcare staffing provider and part of the Adecco Group.

The winning hospital, Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida (Fort Myers), had 68,146

votes. Nearly 70 hospitals were nominated for Most Beautiful consideration. The Top 20 Most Beautiful Hospitals were determined during a month-long online voting period.

In previous years, Elmhurst Hospital finished fifth in 2012, second in 2013, 16th in 2014, eighth in 2015, second in 2016, and second in 2017.

Bethel youths take mission trip to Rockford area

In June, 22 youth and four adults from Bethel United Church of Christ traveled to Rockford, on the youth group’s annual week-long mission work trip. This year’s destination was Rockford Work Camps (RWC), which is committed to supporting the efforts of those helping to improve the quality of life for people living in the Rockford community.

With the motto “Putting feet on your faith,” RWC partners with local groups to accomplish this goal.

One of these groups is Roots and Wings, a developer of urban gardens. The work campers from Bethel helped at the RWC Blackhawk Court Farm & Garden, enjoying a day of weeding and hearing the stories of the young man who manages the garden, which provides fresh produce to those living with limited access to healthy foods.

Rockford Park District is working hard to revitalize the city and draw others to Rockford to live.

The Bethel group helped to restore a replica native village on park district property, assisting a woman whose late husband originally undertook building an authentic site to educate others. The group also worked at Patriots Gateway Community Center, which provides camps and childcare, at greatly reduced rates or free of charge, as

Helping raise the canopy Another organization the mission trippers worked with is Project 1013, which is helping residents in some of Rockford’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods take back their streets, one block at a time.

trimming trees and clearing brush, thus taking away areas for gang members and criminals to hide--to help make neighborhoods places where people are beginning to feel safe outside of their homes. Reflecting on the trip College-bound Dani Kolosieke, on her fifth Bethel mission trip, was once again inspired by the experience, especially by her interactions with refugee children in their neighborhoods and at the Community Center. While sharing sack lunches and delightful conversation with two young boys during a day of painting the Center’s recreation room, Kolosieke was touched by their ability to find joy in lives that are often difficult.

“I hope,” she said, “that we are all able to follow the example of these kids; to show laughter and true joy with those around us. To appreciate the smallest gifts and the smallest of lights.”

The Bethel youths were blessed to have enthusiastic chaperones— Jenny Pozen, Todd Keenan, Kevin Rogers, and John Kolosieke--who were willing to take a week from their busy lives to travel and work beside them, sharing their faith by modeling a selfless and generous spirit.

Bethel is grateful for the warm-hearted hospitality of the United Methodist Church in Rockford, which housed the group

Bethel’s Christian Education Director, Jenny Pozen, summed up the trip in this way: “Every mission work trip and its experiences are different but they all impact us.

Life is full of tough challenges, and we saw glimpses of some of these through the stories of the people we met--people in areas and walks of life we may have never known. We learned from their stories and hope that we all grow in our compassion and understanding of the struggles others face in this world—things we find hard to imagine. Life is very difficult for so many people.”

All of the organizations the Bethel group worked with are looking for volunteers and would welcome them with open arms. They can be contacted through the RWC, which coordinates volunteer activities, at rockfordworkcamps.org.

All Service Golf Outing set for Aug. 15 On Wednesday, Aug. 15, the Elmhurst Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions Club will present the Elmhurst All-Service Golf Outing at White Pines Golf Club at 500 W. Jefferson in Bensenville. Foursomes can choose their own tee times. Late morning tee times are available.

Wilkinson-Sotos exchange vows Mary E. Sotos, daughter of Sally and George Sotos of Elmhurst, and David Wilkinson, son of Patty and Mike White of Richmond, Virginia, were married on July 21, 2018 in Hartford, Connecticut, where they live.

The bride graduated from York High School in 2003, and from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota.

She is currently the deputy commissioner of energy for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Development.

Previously, she was a project manager and associate at World Resourc-

es Institute of Washington, D.C. The groom graduated from the University of Virginia, and from Yale Law School.

He is currently the commissioner of the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood. Previously, he served as director of the White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation in the Obama administration.

The wedding ceremony was held at the historic Hartford City Hall.

The wedding reception took place in the Yard Goats Club at Dunkin’ Donuts Baseball Stadium in Hartford.

Local wildlife Native wildlife can find shelter throughout Elmhurst parks. Bird houses are a popular Eagle Scout project and you can find several at Eldridge Park, including wren houses and bluebird boxes. Bees are important pollinators and creating a home for various bee species in the parks allows them to do their work at improving the surrounding natural environment.

Pollinator beds and bee boxes located at Eldridge, Berens, Wilder Park and the Prairie Path give bees a place to nest. Fortunately, these bee boxes attract solitary bee species, which aren’t known for stinging.

Monarch Waystations help combat the loss of habitat by providing resources like milkweed and nectar producing plants where monarch butterflies can breed and rest during their annual migration. Certified waystations are located at Berens, Eldridge, Wilder Park and the Great Western Prairie while milkweed can be found in beds throughout the District.

Efforts can be seen at Eldridge Eldridge Park, as the home to many of these conservation elements, is a wonderful place to see the effects supporting plant and wildlife has. Staying green Other conservation efforts include water collection at the green house, which saves on water costs, and the green roof at the Administrative Office. “Green roofs protect the roof and materials,” said Price. Prairie plants on the roof provide oxygen, cool the environment and absorb water, preventing water from draining off the roof. In an effort to reduce pesticide use, the District also has a test site at Van Voorst Park which is pesticide free. During this trial run, staff continue to perform all other regular maintenance duties without the use of herbicides or synthetic fertilizers.

Throughout the Park District are no-mow areas, which contribute to a park’s whole ecosystem.

“In a landlocked suburban community, it provides habitat,” said Dan Payne, Director of Parks. These areas also lower emissions and cut down on fuel usage by the District mow crews.

“Any areas we can eliminate or minimize turf grass can save money for the District in labor and equipment wear and tear and to provide beneficial habitat as well as being aesthetically pleasing.”

These areas also promote native plant growth and the Park District, along with many volunteers, works to make sure areas like this are kept clear of invasive species. Controlled burns are administered in prairie areas every three to five years to maintain the growth of native prairie species. Native plants take many forms, including

Uber for lawn care launches in Elmhurst Lawn mowing app GreenPal expands into western suburbs

GreenPal, an app that connects homeowners with local, vetted lawn care professionals, has launched this week in Elmhurst.

Nashville-based GreenPal allows homeowners to find local, prescreened lawn professionals. Homeowners can list their lawns with their service date and lawn care needs.

Vetted lawn care pros can then bid on

their properties based on the Google street and aerial images and any other lawn details the homeowner provides. Homeowners can then select who they want to work with based on vendor’s ratings, reviews, and price.

Once the vendor has completed the service, the lawn care pro will send a time-stamped photo of the completed work. Homeowners can then pay

via the app and set up more appointments.

The Elmhurst office selected the Pantry whose mission is to distribute food and relieve hunger in Elmhurst and the surrounding communities.

County launches annual budget survey Seeks public input on spending

DuPage County residents have the opportunity to share important feedback with County Board members and staff by completing DuPage’s annual budget survey. The survey is available online surveymonkey.com/r/ FYPRHJ6.

Each year, the DuPage County Board asks the residents to provide their thoughts pertaining to County programs and spending priorities. The information helps shape the next year’s budget, determining spending levels for the County’s various programs.

“This is not our budget; it is the taxpayers’ budget,” said Finance Committee Chairman Bob Larsen. “We hope they take ownership and give the Board feedback on their spending priorities for 2019.”

The survey coincides with the regular budget process as DuPage officials determine spending levels for Fiscal Year 2019, which begins on Dec. 1, 2018.

DuPage County residents may find the brief survey at the County’s homepage at dupageco. org and clicking on the budget survey link at the top of the page.

County Board Chairman Dan Cronin will present his FY2019 budget plan to the County Board on Sept. 25.

June 25-June 29 Burglary was reported at a restaurant in the 100 block of W. First between the above dates. An employee told police that that an unknown pry tool was used to gain access to his office, where three bottles of alcohol were allegedly taken. Gary Batchelder, 34, of Villa Park, was charged with felony charges of burglary and theft.

Warrant arrest

July 23 Police said an officer responded to the report of a burglar alarm in the 900 block of N. Larch at around 1:39 a.m. Contact was made with a subject, who was cleaning the interior of the building and accidentally activated the alarm. According to police, the officer learned that the subject, Ulysses F. Scott, 37, of Oak Park, had a valid warrant from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The subject was arrested and transported to the police station. He was processed on the warrant, posted bond and was released.

July 21 Police said Jose J. Ortiz-Hernandez, 32, of Glendale Heights, was found to have a warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Berteau at around 11:54 p.m. He also was charged with driving while license suspended and disobeying a traffic control device.

July 20 Police said Jim Maldonado, 21, of West Chicago, came to the police department at around 10:38 a.m. to turn himself in on a warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon further investigation, he was found to have another valid warrant out of DuPage County, according to police.

July 19 Police said that subsequent to assisting a motorist near Butterfield and Commonwealth at around 5:30 p.m., Ciro Luna-Osorio, 37, of Villa Park, was found to have an original warrant out of the Villa Park Police Department.

Random Acts of Kindness Day

Back in the day when I gave a lot of JOY talks and workshops (I still do some), people started called me the Joy Fairy. I loved it. Still do.

(Some now call me the Book Fairy too.) I was constantly gifted with joy mementos and trinkets and cards, in person and in my PO Box. As much as that was indeed joy and my gratitude overflowed, I told folks to instead send to someone in their world who could use a pick me up.

That is what I am asking you to do today. Snail mail someone a card or a note, just to say “Hey, I was thinking about you!” This simple act of kindness does a world of good. And we are a world that always welcomes more good.

It can be a simple joy kind of thing or it can be specific to that particular someone. Know a friend who digs sunflowers? Print out a picture of a field of flowers from your computer and sign it. Sending happy thoughts has exponential power.

Use your imagination. I had a friend cut something off a cereal box and she sent it with a sticky note. It made me smile. It made my day. (Thanks, Mary, for the fun snail mail! You don’t have to be a creative genius. If your friend loves Adam Levine, print a picture and sign it: Singing for you! Do whatever feels fun for you.

Certainly you can send actual cards. Buy in bulk or grab when the image or words resonate for a special someone. A stamp is fifty cents. If you do not buy yourself one cup of coffee this week, you can have the moolah for the stamp, the envelope, the card, whatever.

The return on the investment is priceless. The ripple effect of kindness is real and scientifically proven.

were out and about this weekend and everywhere we went, people of all ages and origins, were holding doors open and smiling and saying “Have a good day.” We did.

Don’t wait for Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17, a long way off). Make every day random acts of kindness day, make it a way of life.

When you are feeling up, pay for the coffee for the person behind you in line. AND when you are feeling low, pay for the coffee for the person behind you in line. Studies show that doing a kindness is a huge mood booster. So if YOU need a pick-meup, do a nice little deed for another.

There is something lovely about doing kindnesses for strangers. They may not be able to reciprocate directly to you, but they will be compelled to do a nice gesture for another and that strengthens the collective goodwill toward mankind vibe.

Kindness is always in season. We can plant more and more and more.

We can watch it blossom and grow.

We can reap the harvest and share the spoils. We can plant more seeds.

And on and on and on.

One thing leads to another. One joy leads to another. Do one small this week and see what happens.

York football to face seven playoff teams in 2018 Dukes, under new coach Fitzgerald, opens against New Trier; Will play five home games

While York may have a new football coach, one thing that hasn’t changed is its schedule.

The Dukes will have a carbon-copy of their 2017 schedule this fall. York, under the direction of new coach Mike Fitzgerald, is coming off a 1-8 season and a tough six-year stretch where it went a combined 14-40 since last making the playoffs in 2011.

York kicks off the 2018 season at home on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. against New Trier out of Winnetka in a non-conference game.

The Dukes then head to Addison in Week 2 on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. to face Addison Trail in a West Suburban Conference crossover game.

York begins West Suburban Conference Silver Division play on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Lyons Township at the Bennett Field on the Lyons South campus.

The Dukes return home Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. to face defending WSC Silver champion Glenbard West.

York’s only afternoon regular-season contest occurs on Saturday, Sept.

22 at noon when the Dukes face Hinsdale Central in Hinsdale.

York’s traditional game against neighbor Willowbrook happens in Week 6 on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Willowbrook won the WSC

Gold title last year and advanced deep into the IHSA playoffs.

The Dukes hit the road in Week 7 for a Friday, Oct. 5 7:30 p.m. contest at Oak Park-River Forest. York returns home for the final two regular-season games of the year. York hosts Proviso West on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and welcomes Downers Grove North on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

York will face seven teams this season that made the playoffs in 2017. From the WSC Silver, Glenbard West, Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township, Downers Grove North and Oak Park-River Forest all were playoff teams a year ago, as was Willowbrook, which advanced to the state quarterfinals last season. New Trier also made the playoffs and finished with a 6-4 record last year.

IC Catholic Prep football team will navigate new conference format Knights now residents of revamped MSC Blue Division

IC Catholic Prep’s football team will have some new faces to look at on its 2018 schedule.

The Knights are part of the revamped Metro Suburban Conference.

Specifically, IC Catholic Prep will play in the MSC Blue Division, which now features Aurora Christian (new this season), Aurora Central Catholic, Kankakee Bishop McNamara (new this season), Riverside-Brookfield, Wheaton Academy and Wheaton St. Francis (new this season).

The two-time defending state-champion Knights will open the 2018 season in southern Illinois on

Friday, Aug. 24 at 7:15 p.m. against Belleville Althoff Catholic.

IC Catholic Prep then returns home to Lewis Stadium on Friday, Aug. 31 to face Joliet Catholic in a non-conference game slated for a 7:15 p.m. start.

The Knights open MSC Blue play in Week 3 on the road in West Chicago at Wheaton Academy on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:15 p.m.

IC Catholic Prep hosts Bishop McNamara (the two teams are no strangers to each other after recent playoff battles) on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:15 p.m.

The Knights hit the road on Friday, Sept. 21 for a 7 p.m. game against Aurora Christian. IC Catholic Prep returns to Aurora in Week 6 for a Friday, Sept. 28 game at 7:15 p.m. against Aurora Central Catholic.

The Knights will play a MSC crossover game on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7:15

IC Catholic Prep will play three 2017 playoff teams this season in Belleville-Althoff, which went 9-2 last season and won the South Seven Conference title, Riverside-Brookfield (8-2 last season) and Aurora Christian (5-5).

Elmhurst American Legion 17U team wraps up play

The debut of the Elmhurst junior American Legion Muddogs team was a big success.

Post 187, in its first season as a junior American Legion squad, ended up with a 17-12 overall record and advanced to the championship round of the Junior 2nd Division South playoffs.

Post 187 defeated Wheaton 12-10 in the consolation bracket to move back into the championship round of the double-elimination tournament.

In that contest, Elmhurst led 3-0 early only to have Wheaton tie it at 3-3 in the top of the third. The Muddogs then scored seven runs

in the bottom of the third to take a 10-3 lead. Wheaton cut it to 10-7 at one point before Post 187 scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Wheaton scored three in the top of the seventh to make it close.

Elmhurst had six hits and committed five errors. The two teams combined to score 22 runs on only 15 hits with a combined eight errors and 23 walks. Elmhurst took advantage of 15 Wheaton walks.

Tyler Gelsomino went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for Elmhurst. Alexis Cotto scored two runs and had an RBI. Jose Alvarez had a run scored, an RBI and two walks. Nathan Kriz had two RBI and two walks. Alanzo Howard had a run scored and two walks. Michael Hilgart went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks and two RBI. Massimo Cortez had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Nck DeSimone had a run scored and a walk. Ivan Lozada scored a run and walked twice.

Elmhurst stole nine bases in the game with Lozada leading the way with three.

Cotto was the winning pitcher. He went four innings and struck out four.

Alvarez earned the save. He pitched three innings and allowed one earned run while striking out two.

Post 187 then dropped an 11-1 game to Morris Post 294 in the championship round. Because Elmhurst was coming out of the consolation bracket, it would have had to beat Morris twice to advance to the state tournament.

In the Morris game, which occurred immediately after the Wheaton win, Morris led 5-0 after the first inning and 8-0 after two innings.

Morris had 10 hits. Post 187 was limited to four in the five-inning affair.

Gelsomino, Cotto, Alvarez and Howard each had a hit. Gelsomino scored Elmhurst’s only run. Gelsomino also had two stolen bases.

Elmhurst College women’s lacrosse team cited for academic excellence Several Bluejays sports announce coaching additions

The Elmhurst College women’s lacrosse team has earned academic honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.

The Bluejays were named to the Academic Honor Squad. Elmhurst is one of 339 teams from all divisions to be named to the squad.

Teams must have posted a gradepoint average of 3.0 or higher for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Elmhurst was one of only four

the Elmhurst mens basketball team from 2012-2016. He will serve as an assistant coach with the squad after spending last season as a graduate assistant coach.

This past spring, Wyatt began assisting the mens golf team, taking over recruiting duties and helping add seven players to the 2018-2019 roster.

Wyatt was part of two NCAA Division III tournament teams while at Elmhurst. He finished his career ranked second all-time at Elmhurst for 3-point field-goal percentage.

As a junior, he led the CCIW in 3-point percentage at .474. Individually, Elmhurst’s Ellen Brown was named to the IWLCA academic honor roll, joining 638 student-athletes from 188 different institutions around the country.

Student-athletes are eligible for this honor by maintaining a 3.50 or higher GPA while a junior or senior.

Brown, a Lyons Township graduate, is the first Elmhurst player in school history to earn this distinction.

Overall, Biondo saw plenty of positives with the 17U group. “I was very happy with our 17U team,” he said. “They were very successful and did a lot of good things. We look forward to having a lot of these guys move up for senior Legion ball. It was kind of unexpected with the junior team. It’s a new team, but they performed very well. They clicked from the start and won the Decatur tournament. That was a huge table-setter for us. A 17-12 record the first year is pretty good. I’m very happy.”

Post 187 will hold tryouts for the 2019 season on Sunday, Aug. 12 at

the Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst. Post 187 will field three teams next season: 15U, 17U and 19U. The 15U minimum age cut off is 13.

Post 187 draws players from IC Catholic Prep, York, Fenton, Willowbrook and Chicago ITW Speer Academy.

Biondo noted the tryouts will be professionally run with players being clocked for running speed in the 60-yard-dash, arm strength will be checked along with defensive ability in the infield and outfield, as well as catcher’s being clocked for their pop times and pitchers being clocked for speed on the radar gun. Hitting evaluations will take place in the batting cage.

Head coach Ron Planz recently announced Glen Brittich, who has been the team’s defensive coordinator since 2014, has been promoted to assistant head coach. Brittich is entering his sixth season on staff.

Planz also announced the additions of Sam Kent, Brandon Bishop, Curtis Simonson and Chris Shintaku to the coaching staff.

Kent joins as a full-time assistant coach who will work with the linebackers and with the team’s strength and conditioning.

Bishop joins the staff as the wide receivers coach after playing college football at the University of Iowa. He’s a graduate of Kaneland High School near DeKalb.

Simonson is the team’s new running backs coach after enjoying a more than 20-year stint as a high school coach.

Shintaku will work the team’s rovers. He is a recent Illinois State graduate.

Elmhurst opens the 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. at Aurora University.

The Bluejays open CCIW play at home on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. at Langhorst Field against Augustana College.

Bike racers competed in Elmhurst on Friday, July 27 as part of The Superior Elmhurst line on Prospect Avenue by the Wilder Mansion and featured men’s and women’s pro racCycling Classic.
