Fire Dept. named ‘Run of the Month’ by Elmhurst Hospital Firefighters, first responders save life of man at YMCA

FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

Andrea White, Jeff Hayes and Frank SanGiocomo appeared at the City Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 7, where White presented Elmhurst Hospital’s “Run of the Month,” a program that recognizes the outstanding services of rescue personnel, police and fire officials and first responders. White told what was so special about this Run of the Month. “Elmhurst Hospital and the Elmhurst Fire Department are always dealing with challenging situations,” White told the audience in City Council Chambers, which was filled with firefighters and first responders. “We appreciate your expert teamwork and skill when dealing with situations in our community. Please know your partnership, excellent care and communication is something we value and appreciate.” White continued by telling the story of what happened on Feb. 13, when paramedics were dispatched to the Elmhurst YMCA where a 58-year-old man was reportedly having a heart attack. “Lt. Jeff Hayes of the Elmhurst Fire Department was actually there, playing on the ice with the person,” White continued. “He called 9-1-1 and bystanders did what they could to keep the man calm until the ambulance came. He was then transported by ambulance to Elmhurst Hospital. We show our gratitude by presenting this award.” She then proudly announced that the victim Frank SanGiocomo was in the room for the City Council meeting. “I was there when he came in,”

White said. “It was a quick response to good information that made it happen. Our door-to-catheter time was 48 minutes - the standard is 90 minutes. So we surpassed that, thanks to our first responders.”

Resident tells his story Frank SanGiocomo then took the podium. “I am a heart attack survivor and boy, does it feel good to say that!” he said proudly. “I thank City Coun-

cil for allowing me an opportunity him, I’m sure I wouldn’t be standing to thank these people publicly. I am here.” SanGiocomo got misty-eyed when living proof that the 9-1-1 system works. “Thanks to Lt. Jeff Hayes, he he thought about what he might have got the ball rolling, he called 9-1-1 See FIRE DEPT., Page 11 and got the ambulance there. Without
