District 205 School Board considers referendum question

FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a special meeting on Aug. 8 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting, which did not include any votes.

Near the end of the meeting, board members agreed to discuss the possibility of placing a referendum question on the ballot for this year’s Nov. 6 election. That discussion and a decision will take place at this week’s regular meeting on Aug. 14. If the board wants to put a referendum question on the ballot in the November 2018 election, it would have to write the specific ballot question and adopt a resolution no later than Aug. 20. The Aug. 14 meeting is the board’s last scheduled meeting before that deadline.

According to the agenda for the Aug. 14 meeting, the board will consider placing the following referendum question onto the ballot for this November’s election: “Shall the Board of Education of Elmhurst Community Unit School District Number 205, DuPage and Cook Counties, Illinois, build and equip two school buildings to replace the Field and Lincoln Elementary School Buildings; build and equip additions to and alter, repair and equip existing buildings, including but not limited to improving security, providing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) facilities, improving energy-efficiency and technology infrastructure and adding classrooms for full-day kindergarten; improve sites; acquire, improve and equip a building for educational purposes and acquire the site thereof and issue bonds of said School District to the amount of $168,500,000 for the purpose of

paying the costs thereof?”

The board has spent about three years discussing and considering its proposed master facility plan.

The most expensive option in the proposed plan would cost about $168.5million, and would include complete replacements of Lincoln

Elementary School and Field Elementary School. A voter-approved referendum would be required to allow the district to borrow the money to pay for any of its proposed renovation options. According to information provided by the district, the $168.5 million option would have an

additional tax impact of about $150 on the owner of a home valued at $500,000. The district would reportedly pay back the borrowed money over a period of 25 years.

The district’s consultants have advised the board to propose a referendum question during a high-turnout

election. The election in the spring of 2019 is not expected to produce a high turnout. If the board, therefore, decides not to place a question on the ballot this November, it would likely wait until at least the election in the spring of 2020, or the fall of 2020, to propose a referendum.

Consulting firm gives presentation to District 205 Board

The Aug. 8 special meeting featured a presentation from representatives of Strategies 360, a firm the district hired to conduct research and provide consulting services.

Cornelia Treptow, Strategies 360’s research director, provided information about a telephone poll the firm conducted last month.

From July 14 to July 21, the firm conducted a live telephone survey of 300 residents of the district.

Treptow said the poll had a margin of error of 5.7 percent and was statistically representative of the district.

The poll’s first question asked residents if they were generally satisfied with the quality of education provided by the district; 81 percent of respondents said they were satisfied; 51 percent said they were very satisfied.

Responding to another question, 43 percent of respondents believed the district needs addition funding.

In answering another question, 47 percent stated they felt local property taxes are too high; 35 percent said property taxes for education are too high.

The telephone poll included a reading of the factual ballot proposition being considered by the board.

When asked if the district should consider doing what was included in the proposal, 51 percent said yes, while 43 percent said no.

Moyer responds, lists advantages of more funding Superintendent David Moyer noted during the meeting some of the facility improvements that would take place if voters passed the potential referendum. In addition to new schools at Lincoln and Field, a successful referendum would bring: • Major renovations to Edison Elementary School; • Major renovations to Madison Early Childhood Education Center; • Air conditioning would be added to Jackson and Jefferson Elementary Schools; • A stage and two additional classrooms at Fischer Elementary School; • An auditorium at Churchville Middle School; • Four new classrooms and a renovated main office at Bryan Middle School; • Improvements to its auditorium and athletic fields, as well as remediation from noise caused by its roof units at York High School.

High turnout expected at November election Moyer noted that a high turnout is expected for the election of this November. He said that general elections like the one in November tend to attract a younger demographic of voter who have young children and are empathetic to the district’s needs. Moyer said that it would be difficult to recommend placing the proposition on the ballot in the election of April 2019. He said placing it on the ballot in that election would, among other things, push back the possible plans for improvements to

She is a native of Elmhurst who attended Immaculate Conception High School and Mount Mary College in Milwaukee. She was close to her childhood friend Pat Brennan of Elmhurst whom she met in first grade at IC Grade School.

After college she worked for Dr. Bill Murphy, a long-time Elmhurst dentist and husband of her sister Agnes.

Rosemarie married Mel Cruger, long-time publisher of the Elmhurst Press and Press Publications. When Rosemarie Mueller married Melvin Cruger, he was the third generation of Crugers in the newspaper business at Press Publications, located in Elmhurst. Upon Melvin’s death in 1983, Rosemarie served as Publisher and Chairwoman of the Board of Press Publications and, along with all her children, grew the business to a group of 42 newspapers serving DuPage County.

After retirement, she often visited many friends in the Wheaton area, where the Crugers once lived. In 1992 she married Warren Parent of Wheaton, Illinois, who was active in the Wheaton Drama Club, along with Rosemarie, in the 1950’s and 60’s. Mr. Parent passed away in 2008.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed many summers in Door County along with the extended Murphy family of Elmhurst.

A mass celebrating her life was held on August 11 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elmhurst. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Immaculate Conception Church, 134 Arthur Street, Elmhurst, IL. 60126.

Health department says ‘Fight the Bite’ to protect against West Nile virus Increase in infected mosquito samples raises risk level A spike in mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus (WNV) has the DuPage County Health Department reminding residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and the risk of contracting WNV. The number of mosquito samples testing positive for WNV rose to 56 percent for the week ending Aug. 4, compared to 38 percent the previous week. The key factors in determining the degree of West Nile virus activity are temperatures and rainfall. In hot, dry weather, mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus (primarily Culex mosquitoes) breed in stagnant water like street catch basins and ditches, where they multiply rapidly.

“With the high number of mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus, it’s important to ‘Fight the Bite,’” said Karen Ayala, Health Department Executive Director.

Lizzadro Museum plans fossil trip, volcano program On Sunday, Aug. 19, the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art located at 220 Cottage Hill in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park, is hosting a Fossil Collecting Field Trip. the district’s facilities. Moyer said one drawback of placing the referendum question onto the ballot this November would be the condensed timeline for an informational campaign.

Chris Whelton, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance and operations, joined Moyer in saying that without referendum-provided funding, paying for capital improvements to district facilities would be difficult. He noted that about 80 percent of the district’s expenditures are directed toward salaries and benefits. Whelton said that some of the district’s facilities have some significant maintenance needs.

Residents should check the Personal Protection Index (PPI) on the DuPage County Health Department’s website for the current WNV activity. The PPI ranges in risk level from zero-to-three, with zero being no activity and three announcing multiple human cases of WNV in DuPage County.

The current level is “2: Moderate Risk,” defined as high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, at least one human case. The recommended actions: Drain, Defend, Dusk to Dawn.

Many community partners including townships, municipalities and park districts, also have the PPI widget posted to their homepages. The PPI is updated every Wednesday at 3 p.m. all during the WNV season by the Health Department’s vector-borne disease surveillance experts. WNV activity generally decreases in the fall when cooler temperatures arrive and especially after the first frost of the season.

Aug. 7 A victim in the 200 block of W. Lake told police at around 11:28 a.m. that while at work, the suspect reportedly became angry and attempted to push him out to the parking lot to fight. The victim refused to go to the parking lot, and the suspect then allegedly threatened harm to the victim. The reporting officer spoke with the suspect who denied the allegations and stated it was just a verbal argument.

Aug. 5 A victim near North and Route 83 told police at around 3:17 a.m. that she and the suspect got into a verbal argument while at a wedding and continued arguing in the back seat of their Uber car. The victim stated that the suspect slapped her across the face. The suspect denies hitting the victim, and friends of the victim related they never saw the suspect strike the victim. Due to conflicting stories, there were no complaints signed.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespass to property, vandalism

Aug. 6 A victim in the 700 block of S. Cedar told police at around 9:17 a.m. that while sitting in his basement, he heard a loud sound and saw small glass fragments on the floor. He ran outside but did not see anything. The victim observed a small, round tear in the exterior screen and a larger circular size hole in the interior glass of his basement window.

A victim in the 100 block of W. Park told police at around 8:57 p.m. that her vehicle’s front passenger side window was broken by an unknown object while it was parked in the parking lot. She has no suspect information and nothing was missing from the vehicle.

Aug. 1-Aug. 2 Officers responded to a report of criminal damage to property in the 1-100 block of Elm Creek Drive. A complainant told police that a maintenance worker found a secure entry door was taken apart and able to open without using a secure key fob. Two suspects were described as white males approximately 35 years old, wearing dark long sleeves and dark long pants.

One of the men appeared to be tall and stocky with bushy dark hair, while the other appeared to be much shorter.

Aug. 3 Police said officers responded to the report of a threatening phone call in the 800 block of N. Church Court at around 10:11 a.m. The re-

Aug. 8 A 38-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and two counts of aggravated battery in the 500 block of N. Willow at around 8:23 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect grabbed the victim, struck his mother, knocking her to the ground, and took the phone from the victim as she was calling 911.

Aug. 7 A complainant in the 600 block of N. Howard told police at around 8:26 p.m. that she and suspect have been arguing for the past three days. On the above date, the suspect reportedly extended his arm and his closed fist with just his middle finger raised and in the process, struck her face with his hand. There were no signs of injury and the suspect denies hitting the victim. Both parties were advised to stay away from each other for the evening.

A complainant in the 900 block of S. Hillcrest told police at around 1:40 a.m. that he was involved in a physical altercation with the suspect. The complainant related the suspect reportedly pushed him onto the bed and punched him. The suspect related he and the complainant mutually pushed each other, and at no time did he punch the complainant. No complaints are to be signed.

Aug. 5 Officers responded to a report of a fight in progress involving six or seven people in the 100 block of N. York at around 12:13 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers did not observe any individuals fighting in the area, which was checked with no results. A witness told police that he asked a group of individuals to leave the bar and they complied. Another group exited the same time, but the witness said he did not observe any fighting.

Aug. 3 Officers responded to a report of a disturbance near Church and Prospect at around 9:47 p.m. involving two groups of teenage juveniles. There were no arrests due to conflicting stories and no complaints were signed.

All of the juveniles were released at the scene to their parents.

Aug. 2 A victim told police at around 7:45 a.m. that she accidentally tightened her brother’s Lollapalooza wristband and her brother was upset. The suspect then went upstairs and started punching her. The suspect then punched the door to his mother’s bedroom. He was placed under arrest for domestic battery and released to his mother. The detective division will follow up with the case.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor Aug. 5 Christian Enciso, 18, of Addison, was charged with DUI-drugs and no valid driver’s

license, while Omar Gomez, 18, of Addison, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a roadside safety check near Grand and Church at around 2:26 a.m.

Aug. 4 Police said officers responded for a vehicle stopped on the road near North and Berteau at around 8:32 a.m. Officers found the suspect laying on the parkway, indicating he was sick.

Both passenger side tires of the suspect’s vehicle were flat. According to police, observations of intoxication were made of the suspect, who was subsequently placed under arrest for DUI-drugs. The suspect was released without charges pending lab results.

Harassment, threats

Aug. 2 A victim, the owner of spa in the 100 block of N. York, told police at around 8:45 a.m. that she received a message inquiring about a massage. An appointment was set up and then cancelled on the above date. The unknown suspect then asked about waxing and shaving and attached two inappropriate pictures. The victim sent a message back, saying she was going to call the police and she did not received a response back. The victim did not wish to sign complaints and advised she would delete the message and block the number.

Obstruction June 6 Police said an officer conducted a traffic stop near North and Willow at around 12:01 a.m., and issued a citation. At the court proceedings, it was learned the suspect provided the officer with a false name. The suspect has not returned the officer’s calls. The officer will seek to obtain a warrant for the suspect .

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Aug. 5 Police said that subsequent to a report of a found purse in the 500 block of S. Cottage Hill at around 11:23 a.m., the owner of the purse, Molly Rose O’Connor, 20, of Elmhurst, was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. She was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Aug. 4 Antwaun K. Cubie, 22, of Lansing, issued citations for possession of cannabis, expired registration and no seat belt subsequent to a roadside safety check near York and Industrial at around 1:49 a.m.

Jose Fierro, 18, of Des Plaines, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a roadside safety check near York and Industrial at around 1:26 a.m.

Dana A. Goldberg, 31, of Deerfield, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper lane usage and using an electronic communication device while driving subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Second at around 2:19 a.m.

Noel E. Lopez, 19, of Bensenville, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic safety checkpoint near Grand and Church at around 11:50 p.m.

Omer Shaheen, 26, of Des Plaines, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Mel-

rose at around 2:20 a.m.

Aug. 3 Cedric Conday, 28, of Villa Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, no valid driver’s license, disobeying a traffic control device and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 12:46 a.m.

Devin Skuzinski, 21, of Palos Heights, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, expired driver’s license, improper lighting and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Indiana at around 1:04 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Aug. 2 An employee at a company in the 700 block of N. Walnut told police at around 7:40 p.m. that as he arrived at an off-site storage facility, he observed a suspect inside the locked gate.

The suspect fled the area on foot, south on Walnut and then west on Fischer Farm. The complainant inspected the property and was unable to determine if any items were missing.

Surveillance video will be reviewed.

Aug. 8 James Cotton, 65, of Bellwood, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at around 7:54 p.m. A victim told police that while conducting inventory of cigarettes, she discovered cartons missing over the past few months. On the above date, police said an employee was observed concealing two cartons of cigarettes and walking to his vehicle during his break. Cotton admitted to stealing the cartons and was taken into custody, according to police.

Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital for a robbery report at around 2:52 a.m. A victim told police she was dropped off in front of the condo building and was approached by the suspect. He reportedly struck her in the side of her face. She subsequently fell to the ground and briefly lost consciousness. When she awoke, the suspect was gone and so was her purse. The victim related she then walked to Elmhurst Hospital. Further investigation is pending. The suspect was described as a black male around 5’10” and bald with a strong build.

Residential burglary was reported in the 400 block of N. West at around 4:07 p.m. A victim told police that the suspects entered her residence to repair her chimney. Once inside, the suspects allegedly removed jewelry and cash from the residence. The suspects then left the area. An investigation is pending.

The first suspect was described as an Hispanic male, around 5’5” and 170 pounds; the second suspect was described as an Hispanic female around 5’9” and 170 pounds; and the third suspect was described as a white male.

Landmark legislation for child sex abuse victims becomes law in Illinois For the first time in Illinois history, victims of sex abuse in Illinois will soon be receiving the better care they deserve under a new law initiated

by State Rep. Mike Unes. The measure especially improves treatment for pediatric sexual assault victims by providing them greater access to emergency services from specialized clinics, such as Peoria’s Pediatric Resource Center. It also aims to increase the statewide number of pediatric sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) and physicians--which is currently very limited, particularly in downstate rural areas.

“Since day one, my goal has been to ensure that this most vulnerable population of victims that has been through unthinkable trauma, may obtain the care they need and deserve from the most qualified medical professionals,” said Rep Unes. “While this bill enhances the quality of care for all victims of sexual assault, the greatest improvements will undoubtedly be for children. This bill truly gives a voice to the voiceless, and raises the standard of compassion and care for those who need it the most.”

Throughout this two-year-long process, Rep. Unes has worked closely with hospitals, law enforcement entities, the Attorney General’s office, and local physicians in an effort to carefully craft and achieve this legal milestone for sexual assault victims in the State of Illinois.

“This legislation represents the

very first of its kind in the state, and finally helps address the fact that the sexual assault of a child is inherently different from the sexual assault of an adult,” said Dr. Channing Petrak of the Pediatric Resource Center in Peoria. “As a pediatrician who specializes in child sexual assault, I am tremendously grateful for the tireless dedication that Representative Unes has given to this long-overdue initiative.”

While both the Attorney General’s office and the Illinois Hospital Association (IHA) have recognized that more nurse’s training in the area of sexual assault has been needed, past efforts have fallen short of achieving adequate levels of clinical expertise in many emergency rooms. This law provides the necessary direction to make this issue a high priority, achieving greater levels of competent care and justice for these victims.

“Working with others to help and protect our most vulnerable citizens is the cornerstone of public service,” said Unes. “It has truly been a privilege for me to fight for this legislation for the past two years. Few issues as complicated as this have received the overwhelming and unanimous support enjoyed by this legislation, and it gives me the unique confidence that we truly got it right. It’s going to make a tremendous difference.”

Ten international students graduate from EC’s Summer Immersion Program As part of Elmhurst College’s ongoing efforts to become a more global campus, the College recently celebrated 10 international high school students who took part in the second annual Elmhurst College 2018 Summer Immersion Program.

During the nearly month-long academic and cultural program, international students experienced what college life is like by immersing themselves in the fun and excitement of a busy Chicago summer.

They took a course in global business and learned about choosing and attending a college in the U.S. They also plunged into a whirlwind of cultural activities that included Major League Baseball, high-end shopping, Chicago sight-

seeing, and a camping trip.

At the program’s graduation ceremony on Aug. 1, the students, who have come from different cities and high schools in Vietnam and Greece, received a certificate of achievement, college credit for their coursework and a $2,000 scholarship. They also were enthusiastically invited to rejoin the Elmhurst College community one day, as full-time students.

“We created this program because we wanted to provide international students with a unique experience,” said Timothy Ricordati, vice president for admission.

“America always has been, and always will be, a place that welcomes everyone from around the world.

Hopefully, over the last three and

a half weeks, Elmhurst College has provided a little of that welcome to you. What you have seen here is truly what America is about.”

President Troy D. VanAken said the Summer Immersion Program is “paving the way for Elmhurst College to become even more of a

global campus,” and he applauded the students for working and playing hard throughout the program.

“We hope many of you will choose to study here,” he said.

That’s the wish of 16-year-old Evelyn Do, from Da Nang, Vietnam. Once she finishes high school

in two more years, she plans to come back to study criminal justice or law.

“I really appreciate that Elmhurst College gave me a lot of opportunities to develop my academic and communication skills,” she said. “I loved it so much.”

Unfortunately I discovered it when my foot discovered a shard of errant light bulb glass on the floor.

Ouch! The bulb in question came from a ceiling fan above our bed. I don’t even want to speculate as to how it became broken, but it’s safe to say a Nerf bullet couldn’t do that sort of damage.

One of our bed pillows was missing. Gone. How does one lose a full-sized bed pillow? I’ve yet to find the answer (or the pillow).

Now for the surprises: The cat treats were all gone (not much of a surprise). To their credit, they’d been treating the cats with a backup: tuna.

Further to their credit, they did have the tuna can carefully covered with plastic wrap and in the fridge. Two points for responsibility toward pets and healthful food handling practices.

All the goldfish were alive. The boys hadn’t overfed them, which they are wont to do. Another pet responsibility point.

The lawn was freshly mowed.

Exclamation point. Their dad was mowed over by that. They hadn’t run over any of my gardens, which in turn mowed me over. They’d moved the wheelbarrow in order to mow and it, in turn, was filled with rainwater, but we’ll ring this one up as an overall good surprise.

They’d done a couple loads of laundry. By laundry, I mean washing and drying. Folding was still on their to-do list, if they had one.

The sink was empty of dishes – because they’d loaded them into the dishwasher! And they are very good – talented even – at dirtying dishes in extremely large numbers so this was no small feat.

They’d brought the garbage down to the curb and (bonus point here) it was actually garbage day. Who says they aren’t paying attention?

Some would call it ill advised to leave three young men in charge of the household for a couple of days.

My husband and I recently indulged in a couple days away as a couple to celebrate our anniversary. When we partake on such expeditions (which isn’t often) we both understand the significance of the outcome. That is, the outcome upon returning home – to a house inhabited by our three sons, some official adults, some nearly so.

They try. Oh, we know they try.

They even keep tabs on the exact timing of our return so they can make an attempt at a clean up. We appreciate their efforts.

But we also fully appreciate there will be disarray. And crumbs.

And a surprise or three. Sometimes the surprises are even good ones.

They did not disappoint.

First the disarray: Of the three bathrooms they had access to (this does not include the backyard), only one was left with shreds of toilet paper. In the other two they’d been using facial tissues as a backup.

The paper towels were depleted as well. I only hope they didn’t flush them. Fearing the answer, I didn’t ask. (Don’t ask. Don’t tell.)

Nerf bullets were scattered on the floor. It was no surprise. We come home to Nerf bullets all the time. Thankfully there was no blood. Nerf bullets typically do not produce blood.

Speaking of fluids, we were completely out of milk. Half and Half was out of the question. As I didn’t notice this until the morning following our return I was forced to drink coffee of the high-octane version. My boys owe me.

It only follows we were out of food. Imagine life without frozen pizza.

They’d been forced to make their own omelets. After the eggs ran out they’d been relying on peanut butter for sustenance and we were even depleted of that.

Living conditions for them had become pretty dire. Luckily they still had running water and canned soup.

Kartwheels for Kids held on Sunnyside

For the fifth year in a row, a group of now high school girls from Elmhurst have hosted Kartwheels for Kids, an annual fundraising effort to feed hungry children, a charity they started when some of them were still in elementary school.

This year’s event was held on Sunday, Aug. 12 on the 600 block of Sunnyside Ave. There were all kinds of activities including basketball, hockey, gymnastics, soccer and golf with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for three different age groups. There was also a dunk tank, a cotton candy machine and an inflatable obstacle course all generously donated by Bounce Houses R Us in Elmhurst. There was lemonade, a cake walk, and a raffle prize drawing.

The beginnings of the effort CeCe Lampa, Katelyn Leonard, Grace Maniola, Martha Miklyukh, Maryalice Shockey and Emma Wheatland felt very blessed for all that they have and, as they thought about it, they wanted to give back by helping less fortunate children. Their parents admit the girls have spent a big part of their past four summer vacations planning their K4K events.

The idea for the initial event was spurred when Maryalice read Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy. The protagonist in the story is Sylvia, one of only 12 children to survive the Lodz Ghetto in Poland during the Occupation, and who was no stranger to childhood hunger. In the spring of 2014 Maryalice went to Washington D.C. to meet Sylvia and they developed a lasting friendship. Sylvia inspired Maryalice and Maryalice in turn inspired Sylvia who began volunteering weekly at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C., participating in the First Person program, as well as speaking with groups of school children and

daily visitors about her experiences.

In 2015, Maryalice celebrated Sylvia’s 80th birthday with her. With the support of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, Maryalice was able to present Sylvia with a U.S. flag, which was flown over the Capitol in her honor.

Kartwheels for Kids was launched when most of the girls were gymnasts prompting their first event to center around gymnastic type contests. It subsequently grew to also include events such as hockey, golf, basketball and soccer. Those attending the event enjoy an afternoon of contests, baked goods, raffle prizes and other fun activities while supporting a worthy cause.

Donations by the year In 2014, the girls raised approximately $2,000 for Feed My Starving Children. In 2015, almost $4,000 went to the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry. In 2016, more than $6,000 as well as a brand new refrigerator was donated to the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels to provide daily healthy after-school snacks for approximately 200 children. Last summer, the group raised $6,725 for the Kids Meal Program, which is associated with Holy Cross Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Back of the Yards neighborhood on Chicago’s south side, considered a “food desert” area.

This year, the girls selected the kids meal program at the Fleetwood Jordian Community Center in Evanston. Although there was a threat that government funding could be withdrawn earlier this year, activism in the community brought it back, bringing awareness to the K4K girls that this important program really needs their help.

These girls have been inspired to action. Along the way they are learning valuable life lessons and making thoughtful, business savvy decisions, including applying for and being designated a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. They are encouraged by the kindness and generosity of others.

Motivated to be the change and make a difference, they are demonstrating kindness and empathy along the way.

Jeanine Coupe Ryding presents ‘Coda For The Day’

Artist Jeanine Coupe Ryding is best known for her richly layered, inventive, and often monumental, woodcut prints. Her forms and color record her observations of nature and of daily life, described in her expressive gestural cutting into the wood block plate.

Elmhurst College will present “Coda for the Day,” an exhibition of her work, beginning on Aug. 15. Her exhibition comprises a selection of 15 large-scale relief prints, 11 artist books and eight collages from the last 10 years. The exhibition is curated by Doug Stapleton, associate curator of art at the Illinois State Museum.

She received her B.A. degree from the University of Iowa and her MFA from Universitat der Kunste in Berlin. Jameson Sotheby’s Intl. Realty develops Elmhurst One 95 FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

According to a release issued by Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty, a new development project is coming to 195 No. Addison Ave. in downtown Elmhurst. Called Elmhurst One 95, the project will feature 20 elegant, maintenance-free residences located close to City Centre. The greatest generation will be remembered and honored as living historians from Iowa and surrounding states come together to display uniforms, artifacts and vehicles from the Second World War (1939-1945).

The 5th Annual WWII Remembered event will feature uniform presentations and weapon demonstrations on both Saturday and Sunday. Previous year’s events at the farm had reenactors representing the United States, Great Britain, USSR and Germany with vehicles from the United States and Germany.

The event will be held Aug. 18 and 19 and is free to the public; however donations are requested. Donations will be split between the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight and the Farm. The location is Seminole Valley Farm, 1400 Seminole Valley Rd NE, Cedar Rapids.

3. Information for Bidders. Any contract or contracts awarded under this invitation for bids are expected to be funded in part by a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA). Neither the State of Illinois nor any of its departments, agencies, or employees is or will be a party to this invitation for bids or any resulting contract. The proposed work consists of the construction of an Electrical Distribution building including combination master duct bank vault and building foundation, brick/block superstructure, completing duct banks constructed previously, constructing parallel electrical services from the two ComEd transformers into the building, dual ComEd service entrance equipment and automatic transfer switch, ComEd/Generator (future) automatic transfer switch, power distribution panel board, and other miscellaneous items of work.

3. Information for Bidders. Any contract or contracts awarded under this invitation for bids are expected to be funded in part by a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA). Neither the State of Illinois nor any of its departments, agencies, or employees is or will be a party to this invitation for bids or any resulting contract. The procurement will be subject to regulations contained in the Procedures for Issuing Loans from the Water Pollution Control Loan Program (35 IAC Part 365), the Davis-Bacon Act (40 USC 276a through 276a-5) as defined by the United States Department of Labor, the Employment of Illinois Workers on Public Works Act (30 ILCS 570), and the “Use of American Iron and Steel” requirements as contained in Section 608 of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act. Fitzgerald era officially kicks off for York football New Dukes’ coach excited about team’s progress over the summer

Things are off and running for the York football team and new coach Mike Fitzgerald.

York, like all high-school football teams in the state, kicked off fall practices last week and went to full pads in practice this past Saturday, per state rules.

“It went really well,” said Fitzgerald. “It’s nice to get back in the swing of things.”

Fitzgerald said one of the biggest takeaways since the summer session has been the team’s education.

“Since we first started in June, there’s been a learning curve, especially offensively,” he said. “We have thrown a lot of information at them, going over concepts. They came back here in August and things are starting to click. We’re able to play and not have to think so much.

It’s been really productive.”

Just because of returning personnel, Fitzgerald said the defense was a little ahead of the offense when summer workouts started. “The defense has come a long way,” he said. “There is a lot of consistency from last year. The kids on defense were learning pretty much the same terminology. With the offense, it’s new and the guys had to learn about where to line up and the spacing with an option run-style offense. There is a learning curve, but the guys have embraced it and they are learning it.

It’s amazing how far they have come together. We have great kids here.

I’m excited that I get to work with them. They are good teammates who are enjoyable to work with. I’m having a lot of fun. It’s a special group that is hungry and wants to change the direction of the program. We’re taking it a little further every day and we keep improving day in and day out as a program.”

Fitzgerald is excited about teaching and coaching at York. “I will be able to put my undivided attention on the players and build relationships,” he said. “I love teaching them. This is my first year. It’s a new team for me and I am excited to get to know the players and coaches. It’s been a very enjoyable experience.”

York competed in 7-on-7 events at Nazareth Academy, Lake Park and Hoffman Estates, and participated in a tournament in St. Charles.

“The St. Charles tournament was the last one and it ended really well,” said Fitzgerald. “We beat Batavia and that was very close and we fin-

ished strong against Larkin. What was great about that is there was a lot of competition. When we get in a situation like that it’s good to see the guys play under pressure. It was a good learning experience for us and we definitely came home a lot better.”

Fitzgerald noted he saw plenty of highlights throughout the summer session, including the play of linebacker Zane Heemsoth.

“Zane is a talent,” the coach said.

“He’s a very good football player who was all-conference last year.

He’s 6-5 and weighs 230 pounds and I can’t believe how athletic he is. He

can move. He stands out.”

Fitzgerald also lauded the work of defensive linemen Ben Melion and Bo Thomas. “We have a very solid defensive line,” said Fitzgerald.

Defensive backfield players Joey Goehl and Charlie Julian also have had strong showings over the summer. “Joe is a great leader and loves to compete,” said Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald noted the offensive line has one senior returner and “a lot of juniors vying for time,” he said. “We have good size there and an extremely bright future.”

is looking forward to seeing KeVon Robinson play in the new offense.

“He’s been up on varsity since his sophomore season,” said Fitzgerald.

“He will be a great fit in our offense.

He has great hands out of the backfield. He’s a well-rounded back.”

Fitzgerald also likes the team’s depth at the skill positions with the likes of Josiahh Scott, Mike Pedote and Owen Pechous. Fitzgerald said the team also is deep at tight end.

“The tight end position is really important in our offense,” he said.

“We have good tight ends who can block and be split out. They can do a lot of different things. We feel really

good about our three tight ends. We have a lot of versatility which makes us very hard to defend.”

Fitzgerald knows York will continue to be challenged inside and outside the West Suburban Conference Silver Division.

“We play in a really good conference,” he said. “And we have a really good non-conference game to open the season. We’re excited about these challenges. As good as our schedule is, it comes down to how we prepare. We have to put ourselves in the best position possible.

We know we can’t miss any days, for sure.”

A new look for IC Catholic Prep boys golf team Knights return Hilgart and Carpanzano from last year’s squad

It’s a season of change for the IC Catholic Prep boys golf team.

The Knights graduated six players from last year’s squad that won a regional title, including standout Connon Leahy.

“We only have two players back who played routinely on the varsity last season,” said Knights coach Don Sujack.

Those two are seniors Thomas Hilgart and Michael Carpanzano.

Key contributors up from last

year’s junior-varsity team include Michael Hilgart, Louis Narcisi and Jack O’Brien.

Sujack also is excited about the potential of junior Shane Rolling, who joined the program this year after playing football the last two years.

“I watched him play nine holes (last week) and he has a good swing,” said Sujack. “He has a chance to be a very solid golfer.”

IC Catholic Prep opened the season last weekend at the Leyden invitational held at Arlington Lakes in Arlington Heights. The Knights were slated to play earlier this week in the always-tough Glen Oak invitational at Glen Oak Country Club in Glen Ellyn.

“We will get our feet wet,” said Sujack. “These two tournaments are a nice start for the kids. They are able to get some experience on some good golf courses. Glen Oak is a big-boy tournament on a bigboy golf course. And then we’ll have our first match of the season up at Merit Club (against North Shore Country Day today). We’re going to see some really nice golf courses. With so many new people, this is a nice start for us.”

Sujack is looking for this year’s team to continue to improve with an eye on the IHSA postseason in October.

“The expectations are we will compete and the boys will continue to grow,” he said. “If we can grow

quickly, we will compete strongly.

It’s a team with a lot of new faces.

Carp and Thomas Hilgart routinely contributed scores last year. We always had someone who could go low besides Connon. This year we will rely on everybody playing well and the two seniors (Carpanzano and Thomas Hilgart) have to be there every day for us to be as competitive as we want to be. It’s a great group of guys who learned well from last year’s group. They act well and they represent the school well. I’m looking forward to working with them. We had a good turnout, which is good for the future. We have a lot of freshmen that will help the program.

“The goal is to grow to the point

where we can get that experience and then grow to the point of where, come the end of the year, we will be poised. We know our conference will be challenging again. The last few regionals we’ve done well. We won the last three and ran away with two of them.”

Sujack doesn’t mind the steady diet of top competition for his team.

“The teams we play will help us be competitive,” he said. “We can be competitive in the conference and then have the opportunity to prepare ourselves for what comes in the fall.

We have the potential to do well.”

The York athletic department gave out a number of key awards for the 2017-2018 school year.

David Leonard, who played football and lacrosse, was named the outstanding male athlete.

Molly Evans, who competed in volleyball and track and field, was the winner of the outstanding female athlete honor.

Sarah May, who runs cross country and track, was named the winner of the Val Cothern outstanding junior female athlete award. Isaac Marlott, who competes in soccer, swimming and water polo, was named the winner of the Tom Bash outstanding junior male athlete award.

Four year, three-sport athletes who were honored include Holly Doherty and Hailey Walker. Doherty competed in cross country, basketball and soccer, while Walker did the same.

Spring all-conference award winners for the 2018 season included Deandre Klein, Dominic Pastorelle, Daniel Klysh, James Hoffman, Maximus Santiago, Brendan Hill, Brendan Chaltin and Jonathan Turner in boys’ track. All-state recipients in boys track included Charlie Kern (2nd in the 800), Sean MacGregor (6th in the 3,200 relay), Mark Morgan (6th in the 3,200 relay), Klysh (6th in the

3,200 relay) and Hoffman (6th in the 3,200 relay). Pastorelle, Hill, Chaltin and Tanner also were state qualifiers.

Simon DeGrace, Isaac Marlott and Gary Derwin were all-conference in boys water polo. Marlott was a second-team all-state pick, while Derwin earned a fourth-team selection.

Sydney Hutchinson was a second-team all-state pick in girls water polo, while Marissa Logan was a third-team selection.

Joshua Mirretti and Gage Burkhardt were all-conference picks in boys’ tennis.

Linnea Dierksheide, Jessica Reed, Samantha Reed and Elena Vezmar were state qualifiers for the girls’ badminton team that won a sectional title.

In boys gymnastics, Kelvin Stevens, John Gill and Charlie Cripe earned all-conference honors. Gill took third in the state on rings, while Stevens, Cripe, Jacob Anderson and Dominic Milazzo were state qualifiers.

In girls soccer, Emily Aylesowrth, Margaret Bleyer, Lauren Healy, Courtney Jopes, Madeline Levins, Morgan McCarthy, Olivia Pechous, Hailey Walker and Haley Walker were named all-conference.

Ryan Schaner was an all-conference pick for York in boys volleyball.

In softball, Madison Collins, Kyra Kroll, Jane Moran, Katherine Karnatz, Lauren Derkowski and Izzy Smith were all-conference for a York team that finished fourth in the state in Class 4A. Elliot Achepohl, Ryan Ross and Daniel Brown were all-conference in baseball. Ross was named the West Suburban Conference Silver Division player of the year.
